Book SynopsisThis edited book is written by six authors from Asia and Africa. The individual authors focus on their own country's case or cases that they have been working on. The book features local conflicts in six countries in Asia and Africa and identifies how the local conflicts are affected by the forces of globalization. Cases include Nigeria's oil-related conflicts, the Democratic Republic of Congo's timber conflicts, continuing instability in Mozanbique, Thailand's conflict with regard to AIDS medicine, Myanmar's local conflicts after its reforms, and the Afghanistan’s conflicts over minerals. From these diverse case studies, the book examines how globalization and international politics affect local politics and conflicts, and vice versa. Even seemingly internal conflicts are shown to be significantly influenced by globalization forces and to create new dynamism in local politics. While there are other books that explore globalization and conflicts, many of them are conceptually organized with a small number of case studies. The present volume examines local conflicts in relation to globalization and demonstrates how structural inequality vis-a-vis weak stateness and statehood are significantly affected by global political economy.Table of Contents1. • Adversarial Political Interviewing: Worldwide

Springer Verlag, Singapore Adversarial Political Interviewing: Worldwide

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisThis book presents a collection of studies on political interviews in a variety of broadcast media worldwide. Following the growing scholarly interest in media talk as a dominant form of political communication in contemporary society, a number of eminent international scholars analyze empirical material from the discourse of public figures and interviewer–journalists to address questions related to the characteristics, conduct, and potential effects of political interviews. Chapters span a varied array of cultural contexts: the U.S.A., U.K., Israel, Japan, Italy, Turkey, Greece, Australia, Philippines, Finland, Brazil, Malaysia, Spain, Venezuela, Montenegro, and the European Community, enabling a comparison of the different structures and contents of political interviews in societies from West to East. Authors bring an interest in discourse and conversation analysis, as well as in rhetorical techniques and strategies used by both interviewers and interviewees, from different disciplinary viewpoints including linguistic, political, cultural, sociological, and social–psychological. In doing so, the book develops a framework to assess the extent to which media political interviews and talk shows, and regular news programs, play a central role in transmitting accurate and genuine political information to the general public, and how audiences can make sense of these programs’ output. Trade Review“As a volume consisting of contributions … this book has a few merits. First, as the book’s title suggests, is its entailing of worldwide perspectives, case studies of televised political interviews include leaders from the United Kingdom … and Australia. Springer Verlag, Singapore China in the Global South: Impact and Perceptions

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThis book scrutinizes the frequently ignored agency of Global South sub-national actors in their interactions with China, using a multidisciplinary approach and eleven case studies. Contributors examine China’s presence in the Global South on a country-by-country basis, analyzing how various non-state and sub-state actors are responding to the rise of China and whether they are attracted by the cooperation models that China proposes or deterred by its new assertiveness. Contributions cover diverse and heterogeneous geographies of the Global South, ranging from Papua-New Guinea to Argentina and from Madagascar to the Russian Far East. Examining such diverse cases, contributors focus on two interrelated questions: What is the actual economic, political, and social impact of China’s growing presence in the Global South? And, critically, how do the citizens of the Global South understand and interpret China’s rise? Taken together, the case studies develop a comprehensive picture of a complex and sometimes problematic process of China’s inclusion into the economic, social, and political realities of the Global South. This book identifies and fills the gaps in the existing literature on China’s rise by offering a nuanced perspective on China’s relations with the countries of the Global South that captures such variables as social context, intersubjective meanings, and identities. By focusing China’s relations with the Global South, it also provides an important addition to the literature on international politics of development and China’s role in the transformation of the South-South cooperation. • Uneasy Encounters: Christian Churches in Greater

Springer Verlag, Singapore Uneasy Encounters: Christian Churches in Greater

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThe book examines the dynamic processes of the various social, political, and cultural negotiations that representatives of Christian groups engage in within authoritarian societies in Greater China, where Christianity is deemed a foreign religious system brought to China by colonial rulers. The book explores the political and social cooperation and negotiations of two particular Christian groups in their respective and distinct settings: the open sector of the Catholic Church in the communist People’s Republic on mainland China from 1945 to the present day, and the Presbyterian church of Taiwan in the Republic of China in Taiwan during the period of martial law from 1949 to 1987. Rather than simply confirm the ‘domination-resistance’ model of church–state relations, the book focuses on the various approaches adopted by religious groups during the process of negotiation. In an authoritative Chinese environment, religious specialists face two related pressures: the demands of their authoritarian rulers and social pressure requiring them to assimilate to the local culture. The book uses two case studies to support a wider theory of economic approach to religion.Trade Review“This book adopts the economic approach to religion to study the development of Christianity in China from the perspective of the relationship between Church and state. … This book is a catalyst for advancing the study of Christianity in China and will be much appreciated by both specialists and students of Chinese Christianity.” (Wei Xiong, Religious Studies Review, Vol. 49 (1), March, 2023)“Uneasy Encounters, the author’s first book, is a laudable effort at marshalling an extensive review of church publications and scholarly literature … . Rychetská is to be commended for bridging scholarly conversations that have not always been in dialogue with each other. In particular, Rychetská’s review of published church documents and government policy documents relating to the church will interest scholars and teachers seeking to illustrate particular aspects of church-state relations in either context.” (Joshua Tan, Review of Religion and Chinese Society, February 20, 2023)Table of ContentsIntroduction. - Part 1: Presbyterian Church in Taiwan during the martial law. - Chapter 1. • Political Reform Reconsidered: The Trajectory of

Springer Verlag, Singapore Political Reform Reconsidered: The Trajectory of

Book SynopsisThis Open Access book provides a comprehensive analysis of political reforms in Japan since the 1990s, emphasizing the role of ideas in shaping their goals and outcomes. For more than fifteen years following the collapse of Japan’s economic bubble, politicians, business people and academics tackled a range of institutional reforms. The sweeping changes they enacted—covering almost all facets of the public sphere, including elections, public administration, courts and the central bank—fundamentally altered Japanese political processes and policies. Taken together, they arguably represent the final touches of Japan’s political modernization, which had been unfolding since the mid-19th century. Throughout the reform process, advocates were inspired by a combination of liberal and modernist ideas. This book examines those guiding concepts and illustrates the often messy process of applying them to real-world institutions. While most reforms began from common goals, they ultimately produced different—and frequently unexpected—institutional outcomes, which continue to shape Japanese politics. By focusing on the relationship between the ideas and processes that shaped Japan’s reforms, this book presents a broad vision of institutional change in comparative politics. Table of ContentsChapter 1. Perspectives on Political Reform.- Chapter 2. An Overview of Political Reform.- Chapter 3. Electoral Reform.- Chapter 4. Administrative Reform.- Chapter 5. Reform of the Bank of Japan and Ministry of Finance.- Chapter 6. Reform of the Judicial System.- Chapter 7. Decentralization Reforms.- Chapter 8. Is Reform Finished?.

  • In the Name of Inclusion: The Redevelopment of

Springer Verlag, Singapore In the Name of Inclusion: The Redevelopment of

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThis book follows the citizenship-based approach and interrogates the policies on urban village redevelopment from a perspective of social exclusion and inclusion. It focuses on two questions: how policy makers and urban villagers understand social inclusion differently, and what makes a difference in enhancing social inclusion. Firstly, an examination of citizenship conceptions, as reflected in the Chinese traditional discourses, provides the basis for questioning the political rhetoric of social inclusion in China. Secondly, a comparison between policy makers’ and villages’ interpretations on urban citizenship helps explore the different understandings of citizenship between them. Finally, by studying six redeveloped urban villages in the city of Xi’an, the book identifies what villagers strive for, and discusses how their strivings make a difference in achieving social inclusion during urban village redevelopment. Table of ContentsChapter 1 Urban Village Redevelopment: The Paradox of Social Inclusion1.1 Introduction1.2 Urban Village and its Development in Xi’an1.2.1 Making sense of the urban village in China1.2.2 Taking Xi’an as the case study city1.3 Urban Village Redevelopment: From Exclusion to Inclusion1.3.1 Urban village and inclusion1.3.2 Citizenship: an alternative approach beyond economic dimension1.4 The Paradox of Social Inclusion: Some Clarifications1.5 Research Methods1.5.1 Selection of study cases1.5.2 Interviewing1.5.3 Questionnaires1.6 Plan of the BookThis chapter explains why the urban village redevelopment in Xi’an is worthyof study and justified the use of citizenship as the key concept to study socialexclusion and inclusion.Chapter 2 From Social Exclusion to Social Inclusion: Where doesCitizenship Fit in?2.1 Introduction: A Short History of Concept Evolvement2.2 The Meanings of Social Exclusion2.2.1 Definitions: who, what, and how2.2.2 Social exclusion in China2.3 The Meanings of Citizenship2.3.1 Citizenship as a Western conception2.3.2 Theorising Chinese citizenship2.4 From Exclusion to Inclusion2.4.1 The importance of citizenship2.4.2 The importance of “sense of inclusion”2.5 Conclusion: The Theoretical FrameworkThis Chapter discusses how the concepts of social exclusion/inclusion andcitizenship can be adapted in China, and where citizenship fits in thediscourse of inclusion. Social exclusion in China is more than a matter ofeconomic disadvantages but is also an expression of incomplete citizenshipand rights deprivation. The interpretation of Chinese citizenship can beexplored in four aspects: first, citizenship as membership is closely related tothe household registration system in China; second, citizenship as rights andobligations in China incorporates a strong sense of Confucianism; third, citizenship as identity closely links to an individual’s sense of inclusion;fourthly, citizenship as the process of right extension is an emerging focus. The four aspects also provide the analytical framework for the followingchapters.Chapter 3. Government’s Understanding of Social Inclusion3.1 Introduction3.2 From Buildings to People: What is Inclusion?3.3 Citizenship as Membership: Gongmin, Renmin, Jumin, or Shimin?3.4 Citizenship as Rights, or as Compensation?3.5 Citizenship as the Process of Struggle for Rights, or as Benevolence?3.6 ConclusionThis chapter explores how the notion of social inclusion is understood by theXi’an government and its implication on citizenship as membership, as rights, and as the process of struggle for rights. Influenced by the Chinese traditionalphilosophies, the local government’s interpretation on inclusion mainly focuson “urban membership” with associated social benefits, and villagers areconsidered as passive actors who receive benefits out of governors’benevolence. This interpretation implies a trade-off, by which villagers aremade to compromise on property rights in exchange for social rights.Chapter 4. Villagers’ Understanding of Social Inclusion4.1 Introduction4.2 Being Urban Citizen: A Socioeconomic Comparison4.2.1 Financial status of urban villagers4.2.2 Living environments and housing facilities4.2.3 Urban standards? “Look at what we had before redevelopments”4.3 Citizenship as Identity: Urbanite, Farmer, Somewhere in between4.4 Being Urban Citizen: What the Villagers Strive for?4.5 ConclusionThis chapter explores how the notion of inclusion is understood by thevillagers in terms of citizenship as identity and as the process of struggle forrights. In response to the government’s trade-off policy, villagers do not take achange to “urban membership” with associated social benefits as a process ofinclusion. What villagers strive for is not only a fair compensation for asecured livelihood, but also the rights to have a say, and to not beingdisplaced from urban life in renewed centrality.Chapter 5. Making a Difference: Inclusion through Active Participation5.1 Introduction5.2 Village Self-governance: A Foundation for Urban Villagers’ Participation5.2.1 Village autonomy: a rural way of citizen participation5.2.2 Villagers’ participation in the process of urban village redevelopment5.3 Villagers’ Strategies: How Optimised Solutions Achieved?5.3.1 W’s experiences: reciprocal communication5.3.2 X’s experiences: trust and mistrust5.3.3 R’s experiences: the representativeness of village representatives5.4 Some Reflections from Villagers’ Differing Strategies5.4.1 Best practices of villagers’ differing participations5.4.2 Regarding village committees and independent third parties5.4.3 Regarding the mode of governance and the elite few5.5 ConclusionThis chapter continues the discussions on the connection between villagers’interpretation on inclusion and the citizenship in terms of right extension, and explores that how villagers’ participation plays an important role inshaping the course of urban village redevelopment. It demonstrates thatvillagers can act as an active agent in the process of inclusion. It concludesthat optimised solutions can be achieved based on three conditions: afoundation of neighbourhoods’ self-governance, local governments’ neutralstanding-point, and a reciprocal channel of communication and mutual trustamong different stakeholders.Chapter 6. Conclusions: Social Inclusion, Citizenship and Beyond6.1 A Revision of the Key Findings6.1.1 Government’s understanding on social inclusion6.1.2 Villagers’ understanding on social inclusion6.1.3 Villagers’ efforts in creating social inclusion6.2 Theoretical Implications6.2.1 Chinese citizenship6.2.2 Social Inclusion6.3 Reflections on Redevelopment Policies and Urban FutureThis chapter discusses a wider theoretical and practical implications oncitizenship and future urban development in China.

ISEAS Capitalism Magic Thailand: Global Modernity and

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisBy studying intersections among new cults of wealth, ritually empowered amulets and professional spirit mediumship—which have emerged together in Thailand's dynamic religious field in recent decades—Capitalism Magic Thailand explores the conditions under which global modernity produces new varieties of enchantment. Bruno Latour's account of modernity as a condition fractured between rationalizing ideology and hybridizing practice is expanded to explain the apparent paradox of new forms of magical ritual emerging alongside religious fundamentalism across a wide range of Asian societies. In Thailand, novel and increasingly popular varieties of ritual now form a symbolic complex in which originally distinct cults centred on Indian deities, Chinese gods and Thai religious and royal figures have merged in commercial spaces and media sites to sacralize the market and wealth production. Emerging within popular culture, this complex of cults of wealth, amulets and spirit mediumship is supported by all levels of Thai society, including those at the acme of economic and political power. New theoretical frameworks are presented in analyses that challenge the view that magic is a residue of premodernity, placing the dramatic transformations of cultic ritual centre stage in modern Thai history. It is concluded that modern enchantment arises at the confluence of three processes: neoliberal capitalism's production of occult economies, the auraticizing effects of technologies of mass mediatization, and the performative force of ritual in religious fields where practice takes precedence over doctrine.

The present Perikatan Nasional regime's fixation on "Malayness" overlooks twenty years of intense intra-Malay conflicts that began with the failure of the first transition. As the "7th Prime Minister", Mahathir had a rare chance to redeem himself from major errors of his first twenty-two-year tenure. He squandered his chance by not honouring the Pakatan Harapan transition plan.Anwar Ibrahim's opponents mock him for being obsessed with wanting to be prime minister. Yet they obsessively fear his becoming prime minister. Anwar may be twice loser in political succession but "the spectre of Anwar" still haunts Malaysian political consciousness.

Book SynopsisReligious extremism among students in major campuses in Indonesia remains a problem for the Indonesian government, campus authorities and moderate Muslims.A substantial number of studies on Islam and religious extremism in Indonesia have focused on security and cultural paradigms. In contrast, this article discusses the factors that cause the rise of religious extremism among university students through an organizational and institutional lens. The dissemination and internalization of religious extremist narratives contribute to the rise of religious extremism among university students in Indonesia.Counter-extremism policies by the government and campus authorities have not been effective due to the absence of an integrative approach. All stakeholders—the government, campus authorities, parents of university students, communities and student organizations—need to establish a concerted and integrative effort to uproot religious extremism from among university students.

ISEAS Cyber Troops, Online Manipulation of Public

Book SynopsisOrganized propaganda and public opinion manipulation are increasing in Indonesia's cybersphere. Specifically, since 2019, there has been a marked rise of cyber troop campaigns that serve to mobilize public consensus for controversial government policies.Cyber troop operations played a crucial role in three controversial events in which public opinion had been initially critical of the government policy at issue. These were, first, the revision of the Law on the Corruption Eradication Commission in September 2019; second, the launch of the New Normal policy during the COVID-19 pandemic in May 2020; and third, the passing of the Omnibus Law for Job Creation in October 2020.In all three cases, there is clear evidence of cyber troops manipulating public opinion in support of government policy. In all three cases, the cyber troops manufactured consent by flooding social media with narratives that promoted the governing elite's agenda, often using deceptive messages and disinformation that were amplified by numerous "buzzer" and "bot" accounts. Thereby they effectively drowned out oppositional discourses on social media and neutralized dissent, especially as mainstream media simultaneously echoed the cyber troops' narratives. The ever more systematic use of cyber troops—and the considerable resources spent on such operations—indicates increasing co-optation of Indonesia's cybersphere for elite interests. This threatens to undermine the quality of public debate and democracy in Indonesia because cyber troop operations not only feed public opinion with disinformation but also prevent citizens from scrutinizing and evaluating the governing elite's behaviour and policy-making processes, which further exacerbates Indonesia's ongoing democratic regression.
