  • Bristol University Press Labour’s Economic Ideology Since 1900: Developed

Book SynopsisThis book traces the economic ideology of the UK Labour Party from its origins to the current day. Through its analysis, the book emphasises key crises, including the 1926 General Strike, the 1931 Great Depression, the 1979 Winter of Discontent and the 2007/2008 economic crisis. In analysing this history, the ideology of the Labour Party is examined through four core themes: • the party’s definition of socialism; • the role of the state in economic decision making; • the party’s understanding of inequalities; and • its relationship with the trade union movement. The result is a systematic exploration of the drivers and key ideas behind the Labour Party’s economic ideology. In demonstrating how crises have affected the party’s economic policy, the book presents a historical analysis of the party’s evolution since its formation and offers insights into how future changes may occur.Table of ContentsChapter 1: Introduction: The Labour Party’s Economic Policy and Crises Chapter 2: Taff Vale and the First World War Chapter 3: Governing in Hard Times: The Second Labour Government and Need for a Coherent Economic Policy Chapter 4: The Second World War, Reconstruction and Revisionism Chapter 5: Testing the Labour–Unions Relationship Chapter 6: The Advent of New Labour Chapter 7: New Labour and the Global Financial Crisis Chapter 8: Electoral Revision Chapter 9: Conclusion

Book SynopsisWhy the two-party political system works against Asian AmericansTrade Review"This is a very important, smart, and well-written book that will have a significant impact on Asian American politics and, more broadly, racial politics in America. It will make Thomas Kim a leading figure in both Asian American and race politics." Book SynopsisWith Barack Obama’s historic election in 2008, pundits proclaimed the Republicans as dead as the Whigs of yesteryear. Yet even as Democrats swooned, a small cadre of Republican operatives began plotting their comeback with a simple yet ingenious plan. These men had devised a way to take a tradition of dirty tricks—known to political insiders as “ratf**king”—to an unprecedented level. Flooding state races with a gold rush of dark money, the Republicans reshaped state legislatures where the power to redistrict is held. Reconstructing this previously untold story, David Daley examines the far-reaching effects of this programme, which has radically altered America’s electoral map and created a firewall in the House. Ratf**ked pulls back the curtain on one of the greatest heists in American political history.

University of South Carolina Press Rural Republican Realignment in the Modern South:

    2 in stock

Book SynopsisAn inside look at why the Republican Party has come to dominate the rural American South Beginning with the Dixiecrat Revolt of 1948 and extending through the 2020 election cycle, political scientists M.V. Hood III and Seth C. McKee trace the process by which rural white southerners transformed from fiercely loyal Democrats to stalwart Republicans. While these rural white southerners were the slowest to affiliate with the Grand Old Party, they are now its staunchest supporters. This transition and the reasons for it are vital to understanding the current electoral landscape of the American South, including states like Georgia, Florida, North Carolina, Texas, and Virginia, all of which have the potential to exert enormous influence over national electoral outcomes. In this first book-length empirically based study focusing on rural southern voters, Hood and McKee examine their changing political behavior, arguing that their Democratic-to-Republican transition is both more recent and more durable than most political observers realize. By analyzing data collected from their own region-wide polling along with a variety of other carefully mined sources, the authors explain why the initial appeal of 1950s Republicanism to upscale white southerners in metropolitan settings took well over a half-century to yield to, and morph into, its culturally conservative variant now championed by rural residents. Hood and McKee contend that it is impossible to understand current American electoral politics without understanding the longer trajectory of voting behavior in rural America and they offer not only a framework but also the data necessary for doing so.

  • Handbook of Political Party Funding

Edward Elgar Publishing Ltd Handbook of Political Party Funding

Book SynopsisScrutinizing a relatively new field of study, the Handbook of Political Party Funding assesses the basic assumptions underlying the research, presenting an unequalled variety of case studies from diverse political finance systems. With contributions from both eminent international scholars and prominent representatives of the second generation of students in the field, this original and thought-provoking collection of current research updates our understanding of party funding regimes, while contributing to the re-examination of perennial and often problematic issues. It illustrates, using select empirical data, the range of alternative political finance structures, exposing both the limits of these regimes and their effects on parties, systems and on democratic competition. Offering diverse and detailed case studies, the chapters examine the stakes involved nationally, and the impact of financing on the political environment. At the same time, they present a picture of a field of study that is still establishing itself, offering direction for future research. Students and academics of political science, public law and comparative politics will find this an essential reference for studying party funding and its wider influence. Members of political institutions and those fighting political corruption will find this an incredibly useful Handbook for understanding the positives and negatives of party funding globally.Contributors include: M. WolfsTrade Review'This Handbook is the most important contribution over the past generation to the understanding of the role of money in politics - one of the thorniest issues for democracy today. The breadth and ambition of this book is only equaled by the rigor of the chapters, written by a stellar and global group of scholars. This is simply the best available survey of the knowledge accrued on the regulation of political finance across the world. But it is also a work of wisdom, which combines a sense of urgency with a nuanced view of political finance and the limits of regulation. This volume is destined to become a classic text in the field.' --Kevin Casas-Zamora, Inter-American Dialogue, Washington DC, US'Money is a central part of the political process in all parts of the world, regardless of their past democratic development or current political situation. However, the dynamics of political finance varies between regions and contexts. In this excellent book, scholars examine the influence of money over politics in a wide range of countries from Lesotho to Germany, and in established democracies as well as in non-democratic states. • Research Handbook on Political Partisanship

Edward Elgar Publishing Ltd Research Handbook on Political Partisanship

Book SynopsisThe strength of partisanship is a matter of historic importance and debate in modern democracies. Based on cutting-edge global data, the Research Handbook on Political Partisanship argues that partisanship is down, but not out, in contemporary societies. Contributors focus on four key areas of research: the role and importance of partisanship for democratic rule; how to measure and secure data on partisanship; explanations of the origins and development of partisanship; and the effects of partisanship on citizens' attitudes and behaviours, and on the function of democratic systems. Engaging with key contemporary debates, from the rise of right-wing populist parties to the effects of digitalization partisanship, this timely Research Handbook highlights the significance of political partisanship not only in the present but for the future of democracies internationally. Featuring contributions from leading scholars, this book is critical for graduate students of political science and sociology, as well as for advanced researchers investigating elections and electorates, voter trends and contemporary political parties. Policymakers and political consultants will also benefit from its insights into the political engagement of voters and the future of party-based democracy. Contributors include: J.H. Aldrich, E. YamadaTrade Review'The Research Handbook on Political Partisanship brings new life into one of the oldest concepts of electoral research. Presenting a broad spectrum of theoretical perspectives and empirical analyses, the book is much more useful for present and future research than the literature reviews seen in many other handbooks. An updated understanding of the role of political identification today requires the in-depth discussions of its ''two faces'', given in this Handbook. Party identification can be a ''helper'' and guide in a complex political landscape, but it can also be a ''blinder'', barring competing views and preferences. The book argues not only for the need of parties to maintain emotional ties to their voters, but also for the need to keep party identification as an important tool for future students and scholars of political behaviour.' --Bernt Aardal, University of Oslo, Norway'Party identification is a critical and contested concept and this volume - teeming with thoughtful perspective and original evidence from subject experts - is a must-read for anyone seeking to understand its origins, nature, and consequences.' --Elizabeth Zechmeister, Vanderbilt University, USTable of ContentsContents: 1 Introduction to the Research Handbook on Political Partisanship 1 Henrik Oscarsson and Sören Holmberg 2 Party identification: down but not out 14 Sören Holmberg and Henrik Oscarsson PART I POLITICAL PARTISANSHIP AND DEMOCRACY 3 Party government and democracy 31 Jacques Thomassen 4 Partisanship: conceptualizations and consequences 47 Lisa Madeleine Carius-Munz 5 Media and political partisanship 60 Adam Shehata and Jesper Strömbäck 6 The blinders of partisanship 74 Russell J. • The City of Jerusalem: The Israeli Occupation and

Liverpool University Press The City of Jerusalem: The Israeli Occupation and

Book SynopsisThe author writes from the experience of thirty years working in the Jerusalem municipality, including 21 years as a public official and ten years as an elected councilor representing the left-wing Meretz party. This book is born from an urgent need to understand the mechanisms articulating the city in which I live, which I love and for which I suffer. I am from Jerusalem, I could not live in another city and the barbarities my government is perpetrating on the Palestinian parts of the city do not allow me to remain quiet. Through this book I engage with the prevailing model of power and repression and the neo-colonial system that expresses its perverse functioning. This book is centered on the political and economic mechanisms practiced by Israel in East Jerusalem over the last decade. These mechanisms reinforce the occupation and keep Jerusalems Palestinians subjugated through co-optation into the Israeli system. Analysis is centered on the changes wrought during the mayoralty of Nir Barkat (20082018), who came into politics from the business world and introduced management concepts to the workings of municipal government. While Barkat succeeded in creating the illusion of a new era in eastern Jerusalem, the result is heartbreaking displacement and vulnerability toward East Jerusalems residents, and the application of urban planning that impacts negatively on residents legal status. The City of Jerusalem: The Israeli Occupation and Municipal Subjugation of Palestinian Jerusalemites is a profound sociological and economic analysis of a city under a normalised occupation which has destroyed the very essence of what Jerusalem stands for: a reflection of diverse religious belief within a multicultural setting, where citizens rights are upheld and not discriminated against for political purpose.

  • Party Realignment in Western Europe: Electoral

Edward Elgar Publishing Ltd Party Realignment in Western Europe: Electoral

Book SynopsisIdentifying a crisis for representative democracy in Western European party systems, this essential book studies the widening gap between political parties’ ideological economic Left-Right rhetoric and their increasing convergence on policymaking. Addressing whether these ideologies are converging or diverging, it answers whether these changes are initiated by the parties themselves, aligned with voter demand, or forced by economic globalization. The crisis of representative democracy in Western Europe is a prevalent issue in comparative politics. This comprehensive study assesses the problems faced by representative democracy by analysing ideological polarization and inter-party conflict in relation to the changing linkage between citizens, parties, and public policies, and the implications this has for representative democracy. Considering both supply-side and demand-side theories, it analyses five major theoretical themes central to the ideological convergence and polarization within party systems, including the cartel party thesis, the median voter theorem, realignment theory, consensus democracy theory, and globalization theory. Going beyond theory, chapters use five decades of empirical research to present new and unique longitudinal and comparative data sets covering eight party systems, ultimately providing a more accurate diagnosis of the vitality of representative democracy in contemporary Western Europe.Combining in-depth theoretical analysis with empirical research, this comprehensive book will prove invaluable to students and scholars of politics and political science, and policymakers concerned with party systems.Trade Review‘An innovative study of the changing forces reshaping party competition in Western Europe, the authors argue that electoral realignment, combined with globalization’s constraints on national politics, provide new challenges for political parties in representative democracies. The book will be essential reading for students of elections and political parties.’ -- Pippa Norris, Harvard University, USTable of ContentsContents: Preface 1. Edward Elgar Publishing Ltd The Rise of Populism in Central and Eastern

    2 in stock

Book SynopsisCognisant of the ongoing pandemic and political turmoil across Europe, this timely book examines the growing influence of populist movements in Central and Eastern Europe. Simona Kukovic and Petr Just bring together contributions from experts working in the fields of political science and sociology to study the roots and ramifications of populism in this historically turbulent region. Developing a critical analysis of both left- and right-wing populist movements and notorious populist leaders throughout Central and Eastern Europe, the book explores the ways in which populism has spread through developed and developing countries in both established and more recent democracies. Chapters investigate the origins of nationalist populism in the region, from historical trauma and social and economic instability to the emerging crisis facing traditional parties and institutions. It further considers the progressive impact of social media as a means through which populist leaders can penetrate the political space. Positioning itself in defence of liberal democracy, the book ultimately seeks to uncover what unites and inspires the populist community emerging across Central and Eastern Europe. Contributing to the urgent scholarly debate surrounding the rise of populist leaders, political parties, and movements throughout Central and Eastern Europe, this incisive volume will be an essential read for researchers and academics invested in better understanding why the region is such a hotbed of European populism.Trade Review‘The Rise of Populism in Central and Eastern Europe provides an insightful and valuable overview of how some political parties and actors have capitalised on the gradual rejection of the liberal elite censuses across post-communist countries of central and eastern Europe. The book is well crafted and skilfully edited to present chapters, from across central and eastern Europe, which provide a series of explorations as to how citizen alienation from political elites and the liberal consensus can see the rise of new political movements which challenge the established order. The book is an excellent addition to our knowledge and understanding of developing political phenomena.’ -- Colin Copus, Emeritus Professor of Local Politics, De Montfort University, Leicester and Visiting Professor, Ghent University, Belgium‘This very important book on populism in Central and Eastern Europe is especially timely, given the threats to democracy, the war in the Ukraine, the pandemic, and ongoing political polarization. Populism has risen around the world and emerged as a major political force in the region in countries such as Hungary, Slovenia, and Poland. This book contains excellent chapters by leading scholars in the region on the forces responsible for this surge in populism and its political and social impact on the region’s politics and policy. This book will immediately be the authoritative source for scholars, policymakers, and the broader citizenry interested in understanding populism in the region and the potential implications for democratic politics.’ -- Steven Rathgeb Smith, American Political Science Association, US‘The volume of studies written by political scientists from Central Europe offers new insights into the debates on the origins and consequences of the rise of populism in their part of Europe. It provides data on the trends of support for populist politicians as well as analyses of the ideological contours of populist politics. The authors point to the linkage between populism and nationalism and discuss the ways in which new democracies may be able to defend themselves. As such, the volume constitutes an important reading both for political scientists and for the general public.’ -- Jerzy Wiatr, University of Warsaw, PolandTable of ContentsContents: 1 Introduction: setting the scene 1 Simona Kukovič and Petr Just 2 Political elites, leadership, and the rise of populism 10 Matevž Tomšič 3 Right-wing populism in Austrian politics: traditional and recent aspects 24 Karin Liebhart 4 Explaining the rise of populist parties in the 2013 and 2017 Czech parliamentary elections: economic grievances and political protest? 39 Petr Bláha, Jakub Charvát and Pavel Maškarinec 5 A few populist statements don’t make a populist? Out of stock

Book SynopsisThis history of the Labour Party since its inception emphasises the economic and social factors in its evolution -- a focus that provides a framework for assessing the elections, personalities and main events in the party's history. "The Labour Party and Social Change, 1880-2005" covers the entire history of the Labour Party. It analyses the reasons for the party's development and depicts its history as the product of economic and social factors. The argument that is developed does not deny the importance of individuals in the party's growth, but rather emphasises that individuals -- leaders and players -- have had relatively little room for manoeuvre, particularly after 1918 when the party suddenly and unexpectedly became a major party of state. But within the framework of prevailing economic and social conditions in Britain, and the desire of the party to be returned to elected office, individuals have had an important impact on how the party perceived and projected itself: the significant roles these individuals played are examined against the background of social change in Britain, up to and including the General Election of May 2005.Table of ContentsThe Background -- 1880-1900; Labour in Peace and War -- 1900-1918; Labour Between Two Wars -- 1918-1039; Labour in War and Peace -- 1939-1951; Years of Strife -- 1951-1964; Progress and Decline -- 1964-1979; Strife and After -- 1979-1994; New Labour -- 1994-2005.

It endeavoured to both correct what it perceived as press bias against the Labour Party and to address the broader issues of political and cultural diversity. Labour's & the Press, 1972-2005 provides a lucid analysis of how Labour's policies on the press sit within the context of the party's overall development -- from Harold Wilson, through the party's flirtation with Robert Maxwell, to the robust approach of Tony Blair. It offers a fresh insight into New Labour's concern with press management and political communications. The author demonstrates how tensions of the past shed new light on Labour Party practices of the present.Trade Review"...presents a clear-sighted survey of the shift from the Wilson period to now, and offers a new look at New Labours close attention to press management and managed political communications. • The Rise and Fall of the Mojahedin Khalq,

Liverpool University Press The Rise and Fall of the Mojahedin Khalq,

Book SynopsisThe Mojahedin Khalq Organisation is an Iranian political party that helped Khomeini's religious sect in Iran bring about the Islamic revolution of 1979, after being at the forefront of opposition to the rule of the Shah. However, as the revolution got underway the Mojahedin were sidelined by the religious clerics and were expelled from the political arena. They responded by attacking the dominant polity through democratic means (such as political demonstrations), and later through armed resistance, to become the most significant opposition power base to the current regime of Iran. Since 1997 the Organisation has dissolved and depleted, and now functions at little more than a rhetoric level. This book provides a detailed history of the Organization and its members, and addresses its complex relationship with western and international powers, most specifically the United States, in their endeavours to harness agreement to topple the Islamic Republic of Iran.

  • Senoritas in Blue: The Making of a Female

Liverpool University Press Senoritas in Blue: The Making of a Female

Book SynopsisThis book explores the role played by the Female Section of the Spanish Fascist Party (Seccion Femenina de la Falange -- SF) in promoting women's political and professional rights within the authoritarian Franco regime in Spain. While acknowledging the organisational and financial ties, as well as the great ideological affinity between the SF and the regime, Inbal Ofer demonstrates how the SF's national leadership promoted an autonomous social and political agenda. Despite the need to constantly manoeuvre between the cultural and legal dictates of Francoist society, the unique activities and personal experiences of SF members at the heart of political power became a model for an array of policies and reforms that greatly improved the lives of Spanish women. From a unique gender perspective the topic of the Seccion Femenina de la Falange contributes to the debate on the nature of authoritarian regimes by reflecting on issues of policy formation and implementation; mass mobilisation; and the role of coercion alongside the creation of a "culture of consent". In exchange for a long-term commitment to the survival of the regime, both the Catholic Church and the Spanish Falange gained considerable administrative power and a measure of freedom to act on political and social matters. As explained, the promotion of women's legal and political equality (reflected in the struggle to amend the Civil Code and ratify the Law for Political and Professional Rights) is a good example of the way organs within the "regime" made use of their position in order to legitimise non-consensual forms of activism. The SF efforts to increase the number of gainfully employed women and improve their working-conditions is an example of the unexpected uses made by agents of the "regime" of the freedom of action accorded them in the public arena. Inbal Ofer raises questions regarding the nature of women's political activism and capacity for autonomous action within authoritarian regimes, setting out the debate on the nature of feminism and its relation to female activism and the promotion of women as a collective. More specifically she engages with those works that critically evaluate women's public contribution within Catholic and / or nationalist settings, and is required reading for interested in the history of modern Europe.Table of ContentsIntroduction; Prologue: The Birth of a Female Political Elite; Nurses & Students: Education, Professional Training & the Civil War Experience in the Shaping of Two Generations of Leadership; The National Syndicalist Woman: The Genealogy of a Gender Identity; Bridging the Gap between Elitist & Mass Politics: Gender Legislation of the Seccion Femenina de la FET; Am I that Body? • Party Politics and Social Welfare: Comparing

Edward Elgar Publishing Ltd Party Politics and Social Welfare: Comparing

Book SynopsisChristian and Social Democratic parties have been the driving force behind welfare state developments post-WWII. This valuable book investigates whether continued party differences have contributed significantly to the design of social welfare in three conservative welfare states, Austria, Germany and the Netherlands, since the mid-1970s. Rather than assuming continued differences or convergence between parties, the primary focus is to empirically analyze party positions with regard to employment and labour market policies, social security, and family policies as well as the implemented policies themselves. The analysis demonstrates how changed interpretative patterns have led to a programmatic convergence amongst Christian Democrats and Social Democrats, largely resulting in a liberal-communitarian approach to the development of social welfare policies.Providing a comprehensive approach to welfare state analysis and scrutinizing the policy domains of employment, social security and family policies, this book will be of great interest to political scientists and sociologists interested in welfare state developments. It will also appeal to lecturers and postgraduate students in (comparative) social policy.Trade Review'This is a well-researched and very informative study of the relative impact of social democracy and Christian democracy on welfare state reform in the past three decades. . . I highly recommend it, because the book makes a great contribution to the debate on whether and how partisan politics still makes a difference for social and economic policy developments. . . • Democracy and Nigeria’s Fourth Republic:

James Currey Democracy and Nigeria’s Fourth Republic:

Book Synopsis'Today we are taking a decisive step on the path of democracy,' the newly sworn-in President Olusegun Obasanjo told Nigerians on 27 May 1999. 'We will leave no stone unturned to ensure sustenance of democracy, because it is good for us, it is good for Africa, and it is good for the world.' Nigeria's Fourth Republic has survived longer than any of the previous three Republics, the most durable Republic in Nigeria's more than six decades of independence. At the same time, however, the country has witnessed sustained periods of violence, including violent clashes over the imposition of Sharia'h laws, insurgency in the Niger Delta, inter-ethnic clashes, and the Boko Haram insurgency. Despite these tensions of, and anxieties about, democratic viability and stability in Nigeria, has democratic rule come to stay in Africa's most populous country? Are the overall conditions of Nigerian politics, economy and socio-cultural dynamics now permanently amenable to uninterrupted democratic rule? Have all the social forces which, in the past, pressed Nigeria towards military intervention and autocratic rule resolved themselves in favour of unbroken representative government? If so, what are the factors and forces that produced this compromise and how can Nigeria's shallow democracy be sustained, deepened and strengthened? This book attempts to address these questions by exploring the various dimensions of Nigeria's Fourth Republic in a bid to understand the tensions and stresses of democratic rule in a deeply divided major African state. The contributors engage in comparative analysis of the political, economic, social challenges that Nigeria has faced in the more than two decades of the Fourth Republic and the ways in which these were resolved - or left unresolved - in a bid to ensure the survival of democratic rule. This key book that examines both the quality of Nigeria's democratic state and its international relations, and issues such as human rights and the peace infrastructure, will be invaluable in increasing our understanding of contemporary democratic experiences in the neo-liberal era in Africa.Trade ReviewThis book is the most comprehensive, dispassionate and critical evaluation of the trials and tribulations of Nigeria's democratic development in the Fourth Republic, undertaken by some of the most distinguished scholars on/of Nigeria. Fresh insights are offered by the contributors, towards a better understanding of the complex issues which constrain or obstruct progress and development, and which require the most urgent consideration and resolution. Reading this book is intellectual exciting and immensely beneficial. * Attahiru Jega, professor of political science and former Chairman of Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) *Nigeria's Fourth Republic has lasted longer than its three predecessors combined, yet it is highly contested. What explains the paradox? Wale Adebanwi has assembled a dream team of scholars and analysts to explore key issues in government, politics, and public affairs: federalism, ethnicity, elections, human rights and economy. The contributors to this important volume explain the dynamics of party politics and the evolution of the federal system without major constitutional revision. During a period of heightened instability in west Africa, and global challenges such as the pandemic, Russia-Ukraine war, rising fuel and food prices, and climate change, much depends on the resilience of Africa's largest electoral democracy.

It will also appeal to lecturers and postgraduate students in (comparative) social policy.Trade Review'This is a well-researched and very informative study of the relative impact of social democracy and Christian democracy on welfare state reform in the past three decades. . . I highly recommend it, because the book makes a great contribution to the debate on whether and how partisan politics still makes a difference for social and economic policy developments. . . The book is a must for students of the welfare state and it would provide perfect reading material for any course on the politics of welfare state reform.' -- Kees van Kersbergen, Journal of European Social PolicyTable of ContentsContents: Introduction 1. 1 in stock

Book SynopsisNow fully revised and updated for the second edition, this unique and authoritative account of the party systems in Eastern Europe examines their development from the revolutions of the late 1980s to the present day. The New Democracies in Eastern Europe presents a genuinely comparative perspective on the old and new party systems. Featuring detailed assessment and analysis of the situation in Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Romania and Bulgaria, the volume draws upon research and opinion from a distinguished group of European scholars. Recognising that many of the social and political problems of the inter-war period continue to make themselves felt, the authors contend that the breakdown of the old authoritarian system was a by-product of a built-in and progressively worsening legitimacy crisis. Despite the great progress made by some East European countries, recent events confirm the view that authoritarianism has not lost its appeal. As an up-to-date and comprehensive survey of political change and development in Eastern Europe - rapidly produced to present the most recent information - this book will be welcomed by researchers, teachers and students.Trade Review‘The New Democracies in Eastern Europe is a useful book, particularly in its illustration of the different histories and traditions of party politics in Eastern Europe, which affect the various prospects for democracy in the area.’- Ann Griffiths, International InsightsTable of ContentsContents: 1. • PARTY FORMATION IN EAST–CENTRAL EUROPE:

Edward Elgar Publishing Ltd PARTY FORMATION IN EAST–CENTRAL EUROPE:

Book SynopsisParty Formation in East-Central Europe is one of the first books to present detailed studies of politics in Czechoslovakia, Hungary, Poland and Bulgaria during the initial three years of post-communist rule. International scholars have collaborated to produce a volume which examines the first steps in regime change and the opportunities for a successful transition to democracy. As well as examining the creation of new party systems after the end of communist rule in each country, the papers in this volume adopt a comparative perspective which highlights the regional dimension. In particular, the authors place the post-communist experience in the context of the earlier transitions from authoritarian rule in Southern Europe. They discuss whether the experience of Portugal and Spain in the 1970s and Italy in the 1940s might serve as a framework for the analysis of East-Central Europe in the 1990s.Trade Review'. . . a welcome addition to our stock of knowledge regarding the process of democratization. . . . the real value of the book lies in the empirical details and occasional suggestive comparisons rather than in a consistently convincing conceptual rendering of the opening pages of the new chapter in East-Central European history.'Table of ContentsContents: 1. • Edward Elgar Publishing Ltd Party Structure and Organization in East-Central

Book SynopsisParty Structure and Organization in East-Central Europe focuses on the origin and development of new political parties within different countries in East-Central Europe. The book has a clear focus on party structure and organization. It is one of the first books to present empirical studies of the development of political parties in Eastern Europe. Whilst making a distinctive contribution, it also feeds into the broader debate about party development and links with other issues of political theory. The book fills a major gap in our understanding of developments within political parties and their structural evolution. It raises questions about the status and role of a modern political party - not least in East-Central Europe - and the links that can be drawn between developments within the parties and their changing position within the political system as a whole. All those with an interest in comparative party development and the processes of post-communist change in Eastern Europe will welcome this well focused empirical study.Trade Review'. . . this volume represents one of the best works written to date on party organizational development in east central Europe and is essential reading for all political scientists interested in party politics in postcommunist systems.' -- John T. • Revolution from Within: The Hungarian Socialist

Edward Elgar Publishing Ltd Revolution from Within: The Hungarian Socialist

Book SynopsisIn this highly original book, Patrick O'Neil analyses the catalysts of the collapse of socialism in Eastern Europe and offers explanations for these events. The exceptional case of Hungary is used to support theoretical concepts regarding the transition in Eastern Europe using new empirical evidence and institutional theory. The Hungarian transition from communism is distinct in that the Hungarian Socialist Workers' Party was the initiator of its own transition but also acted as its own greatest enemy. This book provides a detailed analysis of the internal reform movement within the Hungarian Communist Party and its role in the incremental transition to democracy in the late 1980s. The author utilises party archives and primary interviews with important figures in the Communist Party to examine the effect of institutional relationships on the collapse of the authoritarian order. He also emphasises the role of reform circles in accelerating the disintegration of the Communist Party in Hungary. The book concludes that the way in which an autocratic order perpetuates itself affects the manner of its decline and the new system that takes its place. This authoritative book will be welcomed by academics and students interested in the politics of transition both in Hungary and Eastern Europe and the politics of the demise of communism in general.Trade Review'. . . this work is highly original. It is a complete account of the process or organizational development and of the fate, rivalries, constraints, and political shortcomings of the reform circles and their predecessors. Institute of Southeast Asian Studies The United Wa State Party: Narco-Army Or Ethnic Nationalist Party?

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThis monograph argues that although the United Wa State Party (UWSP) has been branded by the international community as a "narco-trafficking army," the organisation has an ethnic nationalist agenda whose aim is to build a Wa state within Burma. The UWSP is not innocent of narcotics-related crimes, but few conflict parties in Burma can claim to have clean hands. The weak capacity of the UWSP leadership has prevented it from developing a clear vision of how to develop a Wa state. Although the UWSP has promoted Wa nationalism, the population under its control is not mono-ethnic. The UWSP has implemented a ban on opium cultivation to comply with international pressure. It has called for international aid to offset the impact of the ban, but so far not enough assistance has come through. The organisation has relocated thousands of Wa villagers to the Thai border area, displacing part of the original Lahu, Akha, and Shan populations and aggravating ethnic tensions.Relations with the government remain tense, and peace has not been achieved. It is unlikely the UWSP will agree to disarm until some of its basic demands have been met. The United States has indicted eight UWSP leaders on drug trafficking charges. Thailand sees the UWSP as a security threat and accuses it of producing amphetamines. China has a better relationship with the UWSP and has given support and technical advice to the organisation. The drug trade is controlled by powerful ethnic Chinese syndicates that have no interest in conflict resolution and state building. Demonising and isolating the UWSP will make the organisation more dependent on them, and will obstruct reconciliation efforts in Burma.
