Book SynopsisNarratives of Triumph and Loss explores the successes, challenges and controversies of women‘s post-conflict political leadership. Through interviews with women who have held significant leadership positions, the book explores the relationships between their educational, professional, activist and personal backgrounds. It situates their stories within historical and contemporary political contexts, illustrating the gendered ways in which women experience politics as citizens and politicians. Kopernik The Puppet: The New Tool of the Global Forces The
Book SynopsisTurkey fell subject to the gravest treachery in the history of the Republic. An attempt to make a ferocious coup on 15 July 2016 was carried out by this movement of betrayal, which was carefully planned for almost fifty years by foreign powers, sources of evil and their domestic collaborators, this movement of betrayal that was advanced by using all kinds of deceits and means, and this movement of betrayal that expanded step by step through abusing the trust and the virtuous intention of our people and all the Muslims. Their true aim was to create a chaotic situation by eliminating the President of the Republic, who was directly elected by the people, the Government and the Grand Turkish National Assembly. Thus, they wanted to prepare an environment susceptible to foreign intervention and, henceforth an invasion. The past and the present of this activity of treachery committed by the Fethullahist Terrorist Organization is presented in detail in this book.

Silkworm Books / Trasvin Publications LP The Man Who Accused the King of Killing a Fish:
Book SynopsisNarin Phasit was one of the most remarkable yet little-known figures in the annals of Thai history, a man who devoted his life to what the seventh king of Siam called "seeking a name for himself in a wildly inappropriate manner," and he himself preferred to describe as "working contentedly for my country, alone and despised by my fellow countrymen." For what reason was Narin so despised? During the period of the absolute monarchy, he insisted that government officials should be held accountable for their actions, and in the years that followed the revolution he spoke out strongly against the rise of the military. He also established the first line of female monks in the history of Siam and fought to abolish capital punishment. The place that he properly belonged, said the leader of his country, Field Marshal Phibul Songkhram, was inside a mental institution. Written as creative nonfiction, this is the engaging story of one man's relentless attempt to build a more humane society. Often told in Narin's own words, it is an unlikely tale of Buddhism, politics, and the creation of modern Thailand.

Book SynopsisFrom childhood, Ma Thida dreamed of helping others—caring for the sick, sharing information despite censorship, and standing up for people’s rights. To stand against the oppression that had been stifling Myanmar’s progress for decades, she joined Aung San Suu Kyi and the many other activists in the National League for Democracy, campaigning steadfastly despite intimidation, harassment, and worse. Because of her efforts, the regime sent her to Insein Prison, where she faced serious illness and bleak conditions. However, it was in fighting the obstacles of her imprisonment and following the Buddha’s teachings that Ma Thida found what it means to be truly free. In this memoir, readers join Ma Thida on her path through captivity and witness one remarkable woman’s courageous quest for truth and dignity.

Book SynopsisFor perhaps the first time, a holistic account of the institution of the monarchy in modern Greece. Looks at the political behaviour of the Greek people and their relationship with authority in every form, to explore why this specific type of constitution was chosen in 1832 at the end of the Greek ‘Struggle for Independence’. The development of the monarchy is explored in parallel with the quest for popular legitimization and the constitutional dimension, including the contradictions in the constitutional legislation and the fragility of a democratic constitutional monarchy. In a second section, three individual members of the Dynasty are discussed in detail. In the cases of Constantine the First and Queen consort Frederika, an attempt is made to separate myth from historical reality. Finally, in a third section, the philanthropic attitude of members of the two dynasties is discussed together with the socio-political dimension of the monarchy. In an Epilogue, the author examines the causes of the unravelling of the strong, but uneasy bond between people and monarchy. 107 black and white photographs. French language text. Pentagon Press Look East to Act East: Transforming India-ASEAN
Book SynopsisAct East Policy launched in 2014 has been one of the signature foreign policy approaches of Modi-1 government and is a proactive foreign policy initiative. The movement from Look East to Act East was necessitated by the changing contours of security architecture in the larger context of the Indo-Pacific region. Act East Policy has further expanded the geography within its imprint; Myanmar to Australia comes under its domain. ASEAN and East Asian countries expect India to play a counter-balancing role within the region. Under Modi government, India has taken a principled stand on disputes like South and East China Seas stating that all disputing parties must adhere to international laws. This policy provides a broad canvass for issues ranging from economy, culture to strategy. The re-election of Modi with a larger majority in May 2019 is bound to consolidate the Act East Policy. India has developed convergences with many important countries of the region under the ambit of this policy and it is bound to pay more dividends in the foreseeable future for India`s national interests.

Pentagon Press India`s Foreign Policy Modi 2.0: Challenges and
Book SynopsisIndo-Pacific has become the pivot of the global politics and the salience of the region is bound to increase in the foreseeable future. India`s profile has rapidly grown since the end of Cold War and now India is being considered an important country in shaping the power equilibrium within the Indo-Pacific in particular and at the global level in general. The security architecture has remained turbulent in the region and in this prevailing scenario India has the golden opportunity to maximize its national interests. The phenomenal rise of China in the region and its diverging interests with India and many other important countries within the region have further complicated the security situation. India had a coalition government from 1989 till 2014. The 2014 General elections gave a thumping majority to Modi-led BJP. This government has performed excellently on the foreign policy front in its first tenure and has contributed as a motivating factor in the return of Modi government with a bigger majority in May 2019. At this juncture, India needs to reformulate its policies to cope up with the emerging situation. PM Modi is considered a strong leader and has adopted a pro-active foreign policy. But now, India has to reformulate its foreign policy in a structural manner to cope up with changing global power structure. It offers both challenges and opportunities to the Narendra Modi–led NDA-3 government.

NIAS Press Monarchical Manipulation in Cambodia: France, Japan, and the Sihanouk Crusade for Independence: 2018
Book SynopsisOne figure strides across modern Cambodian history – Norodom Sihanouk. From his accession to the throne of Cambodia in 1941 until his extravagant funeral ceremony in 2013, the prince turned `king father’ in later life never dodged controversy. But this is not a biography of Sihanouk; the focus is upon the final decades of the French protectorate, the rise of a counter-elite and winning of Cambodia’s independence. Manipulation of the 1,000-year-old monarchy comes to the heart of this book, as does indigenous resistance, Buddhist activism, French cultural creationism, the rise of radical republicanism, Thai recidivism and wartime Japanese machinations. Carried through into the postwar period, the seeds of Cambodia’s own destruction were being sown in the jungle perimeters, rubber plantations, schools and monkhood, and even in the classrooms of prestigious French institutions. Deeply embedded Khmer cultural conventions and the interplay of charismatic power and patronage are not irrelevant to this discussion, indeed inform us as to the future and even present-day patterns of political behaviour. The skill of the young Sihanouk in navigating between Vichy France, Japanese militarists, republican opportunists, armed rural insurgency and French proconsuls is brought to life by a range of new archival documentation. A book is also a work of premonition as much inquiry, exploring how did a country of such grace and natural bounty come to be associated with the worst excesses of mass murder and genocide experienced in the twentieth century. The long political prelude as exposed in this book makes the now clichéd `tragedy of Cambodian history’ much more comprehensible.

Leuven University Press A Versatile Gentleman: Consistency in Plutarch's
Book SynopsisPlutarch was a brilliant Platonist, an erudite historian, a gifted author of highly polished literary dialogues, a priest of Apollo at Delphi, and a devoted politician in his hometown Chaeronea. He felt confident in the most technical and specialized discussions, yet was not afraid of rhetorical generalizations. In his voluminous oeuvre, he appears as a sharp polemicist and a loving father, an ardent pupil but also a kind, inspiring teacher, a sober historian and a teller of wondrous tales. In view of all these different personae, erudite versatility is without any doubt a major characteristic of Plutarch’s works. A Versatile Gentleman is dedicated to Luc Van der Stockt, professor emeritus of Greek language and literature at KU Leuven and a truly versatile gentleman. The volume aims to do justice to his and Plutarch’s versatility by discussing the Chaeronean from many different angles. As such, it sheds new light on the coherence of, and the tensions in, Plutarch’s thinking and writing. This publication is GPRC-labeled (Guaranteed Peer-Reviewed Content).Table of ContentsIntroduction F.B. Amsterdam University Press King Alfred the Great, his Hagiographers and his
Book SynopsisThis book situates Alfred the Great in his hagiographic context. For 150 years, the fables told in the ninth century about Alfred’s childhood have posed interlocking disciplinary challenges to historians committed to evicting romance from history. Blending current Hagiography Studies with historical, literary, and biblical hermeneutics can help us forgo the anti-hagiographic commitments which motivated the scholars who purified the Victorian cult of Alfred by expunging his legends and salvaging his historicity. The book focusses on the typological functions of three Alfredian fables from the Old English Chronicle, the Old English Boethius, and Asser’s Vita Ælfredi, analyses the plot common to all three, critiques the psychological conjecture that Alfred’s childhood memory was their common source, and shows that synoptically they can help us see how Alfred shaped the curve of his own life’s destiny and how he engaged in the formation of his own cult to last a thousand years.Trade Review“Kalmar’s reading of Asser’s Life of King Alfred is original, personal, and engaging – as befits the nature of the work itself. He captures the chemistry between an extraordinary king and the Welsh priest who entered into his service. Enjoy the ride!” Professor Simon Keynes, University of Cambridge “A breathtaking endeavor, challenging, wide-ranging, and lovingly crafted, with conclusions good enough to be true. The author excels in drawing harmony from textual dissonance. Alfred and Asser will never be the same, nor will readers of this extraordinary book.” Roberta Frank, Yale University “Tomás Kalmar’s willingness to read and think about virtually everything ever written about King Alfred turns what might have been a well-informed useful work on the long afterlife of Alfred’s life and reign, and Asser’s Life of Alfred, into an excitingly dense microcosm of the genesis of British national identity over a thousand years. He traces a bedrock of historical fact morphing into national myth not only in schoolbook stories but championed by intellectuals and academics equally committed to their own ‘true Alfred,’ hero and exemplar of the nation. Kalmar uses his original trope of ‘Victorian reliquarianism’ to hold together medieval and modern emotional investments in the idea of Alfred, a true modern fetish for secular salvation, a religion of nation and empire. Built on exhaustive research, scrupulous close reading, and precise careful argumentation, Kalmar’s book makes scholarship enormously fun to read – it has narrative propulsion told in an appealingly direct authorial voice. Historical erudition, medievalist and modern, is rarely this compellingly interesting, rarely so frankly entertaining on subjects of continuing importance.” Nancy Partner, McGill University “An unusual take on England’s king who burnt the cakes but became the British Empire’s ‘saint’. Kalmar asks simple questions about King Alfred, offering thoughtful answers that will keep readers engrossed, chuckling, and even make them laugh out loud.”" Professor Jane Roberts, Emeritus Professor of English Language and Medieval Literature, University of London “Tomas Kalmar’s quest is to find the real Alfred in Asser’s vita. This not, however, a work of historical criticism in a traditional vein, but a skillful, immensely erudite, and sparklingly written exploration of the meanings of a classic hagiographical text.” John W. Central European University Press Civil Movements in an Illiberal Regime: Political
Book SynopsisDániel Mikecz addresses in this study the tensions between oppositional civil society and party-political actors. As successive elections demonstrate the increasing confidence of the illiberal regime of Viktor Orbán, left and liberal parties of the opposition have faced a prolonged crisis in credibility. At the same time, the civil society has not been immobile, and bottom-up initiatives, social and political movements, and non-governmental organizations have gained momentum in the public sphere. The ruling power is also active in the extra-parliamentary political arena. Through national consultations, Peace Marches, and other means, Orbán’s governing Fidesz party has mobilized voters outside of election campaigns and has implemented a so-called movement governance. The study offers a vivid examination of this top-down or astroturf mobilization of the regime. Mikecz identifies the different patterns of activism and creates a coherent typology. He describes in detail each kind of activism based on opinion surveys, protest surveys and content analysis. The categorization and comprehensive exploration of civil movements provide a deep understanding of the mechanisms of illiberal postcommunist regimes.Table of ContentsList of Tables 1 Introduction 2 The Context of Activism: Civil Society and Political Participation in Hungary From Civil Society to Civil Movements The Political Opportunity Structure of the Hungarian Illiberal Regime 3 Protest and Politics after the Illiberal Turn New Waves of Protest and Political Participation after 2010 Structural Contrasts between Civil and Political Action Institutionalization Processes 4 Patterns of Activism in Hungary Civil Ethos Activism Experience-oriented, Altruistic Activism Advocacy Activism Exclusive Political Activism Populist Political Activism 5 Conclusions Bibliography Appendix Index
