Book SynopsisThe gripping inside story of Gordon Brown's rise to become Prime Minister.Gordon Brown's arrival at the Treasury in May 1997 was greeted with great excitement not to mention anticipation. Officials of every rank looked on expectantly to see what miracles the chancellor would work. And so, as Master of the New Era, Brown created relationships across every Whitehall department and extended his influence to every aspect of government. He brought into effect the most important budgetary changes of the past decade: the commitment to Private Finance Initiative, which altered infrastructure from the London Underground to the NHS and state schools; the management of the Inland Revenue; the increase in taxes; and the demise of Britain's pension funds. In this gripping and fully updated biography, reissued to coincide with Brown's assumption of Tony Blair's mantle, best-selling author Tom Bower documents the rise to power of a driven and complex politician, and exposes how the ambitions of the LaTrade Review‘As a psychological profile, an exploration of personal ambition and a study of political obsession driven by religious angst, this biography is gripping.’ Daily Telegraph ‘Intensively researched but coolly critical…this remains the most thorough biography we have.’ Independent ‘What makes this worth reading is Bower’s damning indictment of Brown's main boast: his supposedly sure stewardship of the economy.’ The Times ‘A powerful book which poses serious questions.’ James Naughtie ‘Compulsively readable…essential reading.’ Norman Lamont

Then, in April 1975, Pol Pot''s Khmer Rouge army stormed into the city, forcing Ung''s family to flee and, eventually, to disperse. Loung was trained as a child soldier in a work camp for orphans, her siblings were sent to labor camps, and those who survived the horrors would not be reunited until the Khmer Rouge was destroyed.Harrowing yet hopeful, Loung''s powerful story is an unforgettable account of a family shaken and shattered, yet miraculously sustained by courage and love in the face of unspeakable brutality.

Kennedy’s enduring classic resounds with timeless lessons on the most cherished of virtues—courage and patriotism—and remains a moving, powerful, and relevant testament to the indomitable American spirit During 1954-55, Kennedy, then a junior senator from the state of Massachusetts, profiled eight American patriots, mainly United States Senators, who at crucial moments in our nation’s history, revealed a special sort of greatness: men who disregarded dreadful consequences to their public and private lives to do that one thing which seemed right in itself. They were men of various political and regional allegiances—their one overriding loyalty was to the United States. Courage such as these men shared, Kennedy makes clear, is central to all

Book SynopsisTrade Review“A deeply personal account of one journalist’s determination to find and report the truth, his fervent commitment to a free press, and his even more profound love for the family from whom he was separated.” — John F. Kerry, 68th Secretary of State “An important story. Harrowing, and suspenseful, yes—but it’s also a deep dive into a complex and egregiously misunderstood country with two very different faces. There is no better time to know more about Iran—and Jason Rezaian has seen both of those faces.” — Anthony Bourdain “Reading this book opened my eyes to how unfairly he had been treated by the Iranian government and how love, humor and resilience got him through. This book is a reminder of the people who sacrifice their freedoms and their lives to bring us the truth.” — Maz Jobrani “Jason Rezaian is an American hero. For lots of reasons. For always using his work to speak truth to power. For speaking truth to power even when it compromises his safety and well being. And for going through everything he has gone through and still being able to unspool his tale in such a way that you feel like you just sat next to the most interesting guy in the bar. Prisoner is a primer on Iran, American politics, journalism, and hope, when we as a country need all those things in maximum doses.” — W. Kamau Bell "Rezaian’s conversational prose makes this a fast and intense narrative." — Publishers Weekly "...As powerful and memorable a memoir as you’ll read this year." — Crimereads.com "...More than just a memoir that reads like a thriller. It's also an intimate family history, an anguished love letter to an ancient and broken homeland, and a spirited defense of journalism and truth at a time when both are under attack almost everywhere." — New York Times Book Review "It is Rezaian’s descriptions of the way the Iranian regime operates at the working level — its twisted logic and paranoia — that make the book so worthwhile." — Washington Post "Prisoner is Rezaian's story of his arrest, imprisonment, trial and eventual release after 15 months. It's also a revealing account of his childhood, family and marriage. Perhaps mirroring how he was left to his thoughts in prison, the narrative is digressive, jumping back and forth to different periods of his life. And it works...Rezaian is unsparingly intimate throughout." — NPR.org

Book Synopsis"Larson's elegantly written dual biography reveals that the partnership of Franklin and Washington was indispensable to the success of the Revolution."Trade Review"In 1790, John Adams joked that the history of the Revolution would eventually boil down to Washington and Franklin doing pretty much everything. This was not as much of a joke as Adams imagined: Edward J. Larson's elegantly written dual biography reveals that the partnership of Franklin and Washington was indispensable to the success of the Revolution." — Gordon S. Wood, winner of the Pulitzer Prize for History and the Bancroft Prize, and author of Revolutionary Characters and Empire of Liberty “Franklin & Washington does ample justice to its subjects’ achievements. ... Larson lays down a pairing that has hitherto been neglected. Few would quibble with Mr. Larson’s verdict that George Washington and Benjamin Franklin rank as the pre-eminent Founders: Without the former’s determined leadership of the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War and the latter’s assiduous cultivation of the French support that ultimately secured victory, there would be no United States." — Stephen Brumwell, Wall Street Journal "Essential reading. ... Pulitzer Prize-winning historian Larson writes a dual biography of two founding fathers, shedding light on a special partnership and decades-long bond that made America possible." — USA Today, "A Best Book of 2020 so far" “America has always been a team project, and its Founding co-captains are Benjamin Franklin and George Washington. But until now, curiously, there has not been a joint biography worthy of these two great Captains America. Edward J. Larson finally delivers just what we need: a crisp narrative crackling with great stories and deep insights. Equally fun and wise—a rare combination—Franklin & Washington is an indispensable book about our two indispensable Founding Fathers.” — Akhil Reed Amar, Sterling Professor of Law and Political Science, Yale University, and author of America's Constitution: A Biography “Larson brings together the lives of these titans, showing how their backgrounds and joint interests made them ideal partners. … An inspired approach for considering the lives and legacies of these two founding fathers.” — Booklist, STARRED Review "Laudabl[e]. ... A leadership study showing how two different personalities can forge a partnership. ... Well-written and interesting. ... Great leadership teams generally are not composed of people with matching personalities. ... As Larson shows, Franklin and Washington brought two different sets of traits." — Walter Isaacson, Washington Post "Larson presents a concise yet engaging narrative that illuminates how individuals can have as much impact on events as broader societal or economic forces." — USA Today "Excellent." — Valdosta Daily Times

Book SynopsisPart of The World in A Life series, this brief, inexpensive text provides insight into the life of Anwar al-Sadat, one of the most transformative figures in Middle Eastern and world history. Little was expected of Sadat, as he came to power after the death of Egypt''s powerful modernizing leader, Gamal Abdel Nasser. However, he left an unparalleled mark on Egypt, the Middle East, and Cold War relations. He surprised the Israelis by starting the 1973 war, crossing the Suez Canal into Sinai. Though eventually Egypt was forced to sue for peace, Sadat won the support and praise of the Americans. His chief American supporters at the time were President Richard Nixon and Secretary of State Henry Kissinger. Not content with this partial military success, Sadat traveled to Jerusalem in 1977 to address the Israeli Knesset (parliament), marking the first time that an Arab leader had traveled to Israel and openly negotiated with the Israelis. He followed this trip with a peace treaty with Israel Trade ReviewThis is a welcome contribution; it reads well and offers new insights into a pivotal historical figure, and the author has clearly enjoyed writing it. It is a terrific book for students and scholars interested in modern Egyptian history, Middle Eastern history, and the Arab-Israeli conflict. * Eve M. Troutt Powell, University of Pennsylvania *This is an outstanding study of the life and times of Anwar al-Sadat by a scholar deeply familiar with the subject, written in a style that will engage and challenge undergraduate students. * John Calvert, Creighton University *Table of ContentsList of Illustrations ; List of Maps ; Acknowledgements ; Introduction ; 1. Book SynopsisMore than any other American historical figure, Abraham Lincoln towers over the global landscape, a leader who spoke--and continues to speak--to people around the world. The Global Lincoln tells the unknown and remarkable story of this great president''s worldwide legacy. Edited by acclaimed Lincoln biographer Richard Carwardine and Jay Sexton, this fascinating volume brings together leading historians from around the globe--including such writers as Harold Holzer, Kenneth O. Morgan, and David W. Blight--to explore the image and influence of Lincoln in places ranging from Germany to Japan, India to Ireland, Africa and Argentina to the American South. The contributors show that the heart of Lincoln''s global celebrity lies in his status as the archetypal self-made man, his record of successful leadership in wartime, his role as the Great Emancipator, and his resolute defense of popular government. Yet Lincoln has also been a malleable and protean figure, one who is forever being redefined to meet the needs of those who invoke him, from Marx and Tolstoy to soldiers fighting in the Lincoln Brigades.Trade ReviewRichard Carwardine and Jay Sexton have done a splendid job of assembling a broad and enriching collection of essays that explore Lincolns influence. Book SynopsisElectoral systems matter. They are a crucial link in the chain connecting the preferences of citizens to the policy choices made by governments. They are chosen by political actors and, once in existence, have political consequences for those actors. They are an important object of study for anyone interested in the political process, and in this book we subject them to systematic analysis. In addition to some comparative chapters, the book contains full accounts of the operation of electoral systems in 22 countries: France, the UK, Germany, Italy, Israel, Spain, Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, The Netherlands, Ireland, Hungary, Russia, Australia, Canada, India, the USA, Japan, New Zealand, Chile, and South Africa. The book provides detailed analyses of the operation of a diverse set of electoral systems in their national context. Each chapter explains how the electoral system really works in the given country, examining the strategic incentives the system provides to voters, candiTrade ReviewReview from previous edition It is a treasure trove of information about electoral systems and comprehensively examines how votes get translated into seats across the democratic world * Times Higher Education Supplement *This is not just any book on the politics of electoral systems; it is probably the book on the politics of electoral systems ... The authors of these studies are all highly talented scholars, who usually know the comparative literature as well as their countries. In other words, they know what they are talking about, and they have been given reasonably generous space and good editorial guidance with which to do it. The result is truly impressive. * West European Politics *This is a very useful book which, not only for its biblical proportions, could justly claim to be a bible of electoral systems * Irish Political Studies *Overall, this is a superb collection, produced by scholars who know their subject matter and can present it in a very accessible form...this is a book for which much praise is due. * Parliamentary Affairs *This excellent book highlights much of the best in electoral systems research. 15 in stock

Book SynopsisLate Roman Warlords reconstructs the careers of some of the men who shaped (and were shaped by) the last quarter century of the Western Empire. There is a need for a new investigation of these warlords based on primary sources and including recent historical debates and theories. The difficult sources for this period have been analysed (and translated as necessary) to produce a chronological account, and relevant archaeological and numismatic evidence has been utilised. An overview of earlier warlords, including Aetius, is followed by three studies of individual warlords and the regions they dominated. The first covers Dalmatia and Marcellinus, its ruler during the 450s and 460s. A major theme is the question of Marcellinus'' western or eastern affiliations: using an often-ignored Greek source, Penny MacGeorge suggests a new interpretation. The second part is concerned with the Gallic general Aegidius and his son Syagrius, who ruled in northern Gaul, probably from Soissons. This extends Trade Reviewa painstaking...sound reworking of the conventional narrative of the period. * Early Medieval Europe *It is likely to be some time before these shadowy warlords receive suc detailed treatment again in English. * Michael Whitby *The author has provided a generally intelligent guide through the tangled web of sources and events for the final decades of the western empire, and in so doing has helped to shed further light on the important theme of late Roman warlords. There is still scope for a comprehensive, analytical study of this phenomenon, but any such study will find the volume under review an invaluable source. * Nottingham Medieval Studies *

Book SynopsisLong before his finest hour as Britain''s wartime leader, Winston Churchill emerged on the world stage as a brazen foreign correspondent, covering wars of empire in Cuba, India, the Sudan, and South Africa. In those far-flung corners of the world, reporting from the front lines between 1895 and 1900, Churchill mastered his celebrated command of language and formed strong opinions about war. He thought little of his own personal safety, so convinced was he of his destiny, jumping at any chance to be where bullets flew and canons roared. I have faith in my star that I am intended to do something in the world, he wrote to his mother at the age of twenty-three before heading into battle. Based on his private letters and war reportage, Winston Churchill Reporting intertwines young Winston''s daring exploits in combat, adventures in distant corners of the globe, and rise as a major literary talent experiences that shaped the world leader he was to become.Trade ReviewPraise for Winston Churchill Reporting Paul Reid, national bestselling coauthor of The Last Lion: Defender of the Realm "Simon Read has captured the indomitable spirit of young Winston Churchill, his breathtaking courage in combat, his raw political ambition, and the power of his writing as a war correspondent on three continents. All before the age of twenty-seven. Winston Churchill Reporting takes its rightful place on my shelves next to Churchill's own account of his youth, My Early Life." Dean King, national bestselling author of Skeletons on the Zahara "With pen, rifle, and polo mallet, the youthful and headstrong Winston Churchill takes no prisoners as an army officer and war correspondent, racing fearlessly to the front lines of war zones in Cuba, Asia, and Africa, not to mention London, where he steeps himself in the arts of war, wit, and politics. Simon Read's thrilling Winston Churchill Reporting charges ahead at breakneck speed with the indomitable young Churchill, capturing the making of this great and eloquent leader in vivid prose and hair-raising scenes. You won't put it down until Churchill is safe at home once again." Wade Davis, national bestselling author of The Serpent and the Rainbow "In 1965 a nine-year-old girl in Colombia posted a birthday card addressed simply to 'the greatest man in the world.' Without a stamp it arrived in London at the home of Winston Churchill on the eve of his ninetieth birthday. He was indeed the greatest man of our era, the savior of civilization. Any book on Churchill is a joy, but this one is especially moving for it reveals the great man as a youth, eyes full of wonder, soul already certain of a great destiny, ambition glaring in all directions just ready to pounce." Martin Dugard, national bestselling author of Into Africa, and coauthor of the Killing series with Bill O'Reilly "Highly researched and fast-paced, Read does a marvelous job of bringing young Churchill to life." Kirkus Reviews, 7/15/15 "Read draws on Churchill's newspaper pieces, books, and letters for this fast-paced biographical and historical narrative...A richly detailed look at Churchill's early ambitions and triumphs." Library Journal, 9/15/15 "Of all the books about Winston Churchill, this is the first dedicated to his years as a war correspondent...Read introduces this work with 'Winston Churchill as Indiana Jones,' a line that becomes reality within the first few pages...A worthy purchase for fans of Churchill who are unfamiliar with these stories as well as those interested in late 19th-century history, military history, and a case study of writing as a journalist." San Jose Mercury News, 10/5/15 "Illuminates Churchill's early years as a journalist and war correspondent." Examiner.com, 10/11/15 "In this edge-of-your-seat, slice-of-life biography, author Simon Read skillfully weaves Churchill's earliest wartime adventures with his lively reporting from the battlefield...Not to miss!" Open Letters Monthly, 10/12/15 "An engaging story, engagingly told." San Diego Book Review, 10/13/15 "Churchill is an enthralling subject, and the few years covered in the narrative are filled with danger, courage, conflict, death and deliverance...Churchill was in the epicenter of history, and readers will devour this delicious narrative about the young rising star." January Magazine, 10/14/15 "With material from personal letters as well as his reports from the front, Winston Churchill Reporting is a visit with a future leader during his formative years. It's an extraordinary, eye-opening book." InfoDad blog, 10/15/15 "Those who simply cannot get enough of all things Churchillian will find themselves entertained by Simon Read's exploration of the courageous (and foolhardy) adventures (and antics) of a headstrong and supremely self-confident Winston Churchill in his 20s...A fast-paced, novelistic book that provides...a great deal of intriguingly detailed material on where he went and what he did in his youth that would, in the main, serve him and his nation extraordinarily well in the years to come." Hudson Valley News, 10/19/15 "A great read indeed!" Military History, January 2016 "Read draws from private letters and papers relating the combat experiences that helped shape Churchill into an exemplary statesman. The narrative is more an adventure tale than a straight biography." Roanoke Times, 11/8/15 "An absorbing book that fairly illustrates the means by which a green subaltern of the 19th century at length became one of the towering figures of the 20th." The Economist, 11/21/15 "Investigates how Churchill went from a young army officer cadet to being Britain's highest-earning war correspondent by the age of 25, getting the journalism bug for the rest of his life...Tell[s] the tale of Churchill the adventurer...elegantly." Midwest Book Review, November 2015 "The true-life story of a lesser-known period in the life of British statesman Winston Churchill...Extensively researched, rich in detail, and enhanced with notes, a bibliography, and an index, Winston Churchill Reporting is worthy of the highest recommendation for public and college library biography collections." Internet Review of Books, 11/18/15 "I have read several books about Churchill and thought this book would be a rehash. I was so wrong. I learned a great deal about a courageous, pushy young man who was becoming a writer." CapX, 11/27/15 "A cracking narrative...This is not just a gripping account of the adventures of a young soldier who could never decide whether he was an army officer or a war correspondent (nor could higher authority). It brings into focus some of the themes which were to dominate Churchill's career. Above all, it is a study in courage...A rollicking read, it is an ideal Christmas present for anyone interested in war, history, Britain and greatness." Centre Write (Bright Blue UK), Winter 2015 "An absolutely rollicking adventure...Read's fast-paced book makes Winston Churchill's story accessible to many new readers...An insightful look at what motivated one of the most prominent men of the 20th century...Read nails it with a book that is just such good fun." Calcutta Telegraph, 12/13/15 "Churchill's formative days in India as a young soldier-war correspondent-cum-polo player [are] so utterly fascinating and revealing, especially as his tales of derring-do have been projected in breathless prose in Simon Read's recently published Winston Churchill Reporting." MoneyWeek, 7/12/15 "A book that covers the great man's adventurous early life." Portland Book Review, 12/23/15 "One of the only books (out of nearly 700 books about Churchill) dedicated to that period of his life. Rather than a general overview of his experiences, it is a detailed recounting of the events using his own writings as well as a plethora of contemporaneous sources of those individuals who were also present. The writing brings to life what he experienced and his behavior...This book provides the reader with a sense of the core of this man and of the impact these events had upon him." Washington Times, 1/11/16 "Read recounts this early journalistic career in prose that reveals Churchill's descriptive skills." Buffalo News, 1/10/16 "Churchill's copy from the war zone electrified London and author Read makes the most of it to spin an exciting tale...This is a gripping story, easy to read in the style of a mystery thriller...thoroughly researched and fully annotated with endnotes." San Francisco Book Review, 12/10/15 "Explores a fascinating lesser known part of Churchill's life that significantly shaped the future leader he was to become." Tom Ricks, Foreign Policy, 2/1/16 "People tend to forget that Winston Churchill spent several years in his youth writing about wars in Cuba, India, the Sudan, and South Africa. If you need reminding, check out Winston Churchill Reporting. It hadn't occurred to me until I read this book that his war correspondence brought him his first success in life, after years of being criticized by his father and others." The Weekly Standard, 2/22/16 "[A] highly readable account of Churchill's adventures as war correspondent...As Read conclusively proves, Churchill was incapable of writing a boring sentence." Military Heritage, March 2016 "By taking the reader back to a time before Churchill became famous and successful, the author shows a young man with all his dreams and desires before him. He shows what is perhaps the most formative time in the future Prime Minister's life and explains how his experiences contributed to the traits he later exhibited leading Great Britain during its greatest test of survival." Military Officer, April 2016 "[An] exciting blend of biography and history, vividly describing Churchill's combat adventures." The Churchill Project, 3/18/16 "A comprehensive review of young Winston's first four wars...Read's book shares qualities with John Kelly's Never Surrender: It is a well-written and organized account." Chicago Center for Literature and Photography, 6/14/16 "[A] lively, action-packed account...Read conveys it all through the unusual style of an action novel instead of the usual academic history book, a gutsy move that could've badly backfired on him; but in this case it works perfectly...A lively and incredibly fast-paced book, this will be a revelation to people...who only knew Churchill as the balding, stogie-chewing curmudgeon of 1940s fame...Strongly recommended." Anglotopia, 9/9/16 "Simon Read writes excellently about the various adventures that Churchill went on as he developed two careers in parallel--one in the British Army and one as a writer on the side...Worth reading for any Churchillian...Insight into a young man on the move who had grand plans."
