Book SynopsisInitiated in 1978, China’s reform and opening up is regarded as the greatest economic transformation in the country’s history. By changing the property ownership system and altering the structure of resource distribution, the Communist Party was able to reform its former planned economy and open up its closed economic system. In the decades that have followed, China has pushed forward the reform of its economic, political, cultural, social and ecological systems. It has also intensified its economic interaction with other nations by relaxing, and even abolishing, many kinds of restrictive policies, in the process stimulating foreign trade and attracting huge amounts of overseas investment.China is now entering a crucial phase that requires even more thorough reform, complete opening up and constant improvement of the socialist market economic system. This book analyses the experiences and achievements of this process. It focuses on how the country enhanced the role of market forces in its economy, advanced opening up and set up a variety of development zones across the country. Lively and packed with case studies, China’s Reform and Opening Up gives a fascinating insight into how a relatively poor and backward country achieved such rapid development, and how it rose from being the world's 10th largest economy in 1978 to the second largest today.

Book SynopsisDespite the more general social, political and economic advances that have been made under the ANC's rule since 1994, power has not only remained in the hands of a small minority but has increasingly been exercised in service to capital. This has seen the ANC become the key political vehicle, in party and state form as well as application, of corporate capital; both domestic and international, black and white, local and national and constitutive of a range of different fractions. As a result, 'transformation' has largely taken the form of macro-acceptance of, combined with micro-incorporation into, the capitalist system, now minus its specific and formal apartheid frame. This book tells that 'story' by offering a critical, fact-based and actively informed holistic analysis of the ANC in power.

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisTogether with Mauritius, Botswana is often categorized as one of two growth miracles in sub-Saharan Africa. Due to its spectacular long-run economic performance and impressive social development, it has been termed both an economic success story and a developmental state. While there is uniqueness in the Botswana experience, several aspects of the country’s opportunities and challenges are of a more general nature. Throughout its history, Botswana has been both blessed and hindered by its natural resource abundance and dependency, which have influenced growth periods, opportunities for economic diversification, strategies for sustainable economic and social development, and the distribution of incomes and opportunities.Through a political economy framework, Hillbom and Bolt provide an updated understanding of an African success story, covering the period from the mid-19th century, when the Tswana groups settled, to the present day. Understanding the interaction over time between geography and factor endowments on the one hand, and the development of economic and political institutions on the other, offers principle lessons from Botswana’s experience to other natural resource rich developing countries.

Book SynopsisMiguel-Ángel Galindo Martín, Joaquín Guzman Cuevas and Domingo Ribeiro Soriano University of Castilla-La Mancha, Albacete, Spain University of Sevilla, Sevilla, Spain University of Valencia, Valencia, Spain The economic growth and the progress of the nations have been two issues that have worried to the economists during centuries. The classical eco- mics books have developed different theories and considered several f- tors that could explain those processes. Unfortunately, a single answer has not been obtained and nowadays economists try also to achieve a response to the mechanism of economic growth. Economic growth has been considered as one of the most relevant e- nomic policy. As it is well known, the validity of an economic policy is measured in terms of economic growth rate. It is supposed that those countries that obtain a higher economic growth rate are designing more efficient economic policies than those that show lower rates. The main corollary to this hypothesis is that the developing countries must follow and copy the economic policies designed by the developed countries.Trade ReviewFrom the reviews: “This book provides an … overview of the modern concepts of entrepreneurship and those aspects related to regional economics. … Relevance is given to a must-reading article for all those in charge to develop regulatory systems encouraging entrepreneurship within fragile environments. … In summary, I would propose this book as a broad and rich overview on Entrepreneurship and Business from a regional perspective. … highly recommended.” (Teresa de Noronha Vaz, Papers in Regional Science, Vol. 89 (1), March, 2010)Table of ContentsEntrepreneurship in the Regional Context.- A General View on Regional Economics.- Issues in Regional Economics: The Economic Thought of Some Italian Authors of the Past.- Entrepreneurial Structure From a Regional Perspective.- Entrepreneurship and Growth: The Need to Combine Micro and Macro Perspectives.- Social Capital and Entrepreneurship in a Regional Context: The Case of Spanish Regions.- The Relationship Between Entrepreneurship and Economic Growth: A Review of Recent Research Achievements.- Networking and Entrepreneurship in Place.- The Quest for a New Development Policy.- Entrepreneurial Perspective of the Business.- Clusters and Business Innovation.- Entrepreneurial Behaviour in Transition Environments.- Successful Rural Hosted Accommodation in Western Australia: Gender Matters.- Universidad Social Capital and the Competitiveness of Entrepreneurs: A Review of the Literature and Proposals.- Entrepreneur and Organization: Symbiotic Change and Transition.- Female Entrepreneurship.

    3 in stock

Book SynopsisThis textbook deals with the progressive global dissolution of political, economic, and social boundaries, which has significant implications for labor markets, the international division of labor, social security, and income distribution. Politically, it is eroding the sovereign ability of nation-states to shape their own affairs; socially, it conjures up the specter of an increasingly global culture of unity. Against the background of the empirical effects of globalization processes in a number of areas, the book discusses to what extent these fears are justified, whether they cannot also be explained by other developments, and whether the benefits of globalization justify the costs and risks resulting from it.Table of ContentsIntroduction.- Globalization and technological development: production, transport and communication.- Political globalization: democracy, international organizations and global civil society.- Trade.- Foreign investment.- World financial flows.- Migration and globalization.- Globalization and employment.- Globalization and income distribution.- Statehood.- Globalization and the welfare state.- Globalization and democracy.- Globalization and culture.- Globalization and its adversaries.- Global governance.- Drying up of the sources of globalization or resilience.

  • Springer Über Systemwettbewerb zu einer neuen Weltordnung?: Ein Werkstattbericht über die neue geopolitische Dynamik

    15 in stock

Table of ContentsTeil I: Wirtschaftlicher und politischer Systemwettbewerb zwischen China und dem fragmentierten "Westen": 1.

Book SynopsisFiscal federalism and fiscal decentralization are the main pillars of federal and decentralized systems. Although there are comparable problems, competences and designs of these systems vary significantly. Furthermore, the systems are faced with pressure to justify and to reform due to the financial and debt crisis. In this volume, leading regional and financial experts discuss different approaches and strategies of shaping and reforming fiscal federalism and fiscal decentralization in Austria, Italy, Spain, and the United Kingdom. The situation in each country is analyzed and compared. The content of this volume includes designs of decentralized financial systems, consequences of changing governments on the systems, and repercussions of the financial and debt crisis on politics. Also addressed are abilities to reform the main areas of the systems.

This book, describing the changing industrial dynamics after the Asian currency crisis in 1997, focuses on corporate strategies of Japanese automobile and electronics companies in Asian nations, with detailed analysis of management issues and strategies from the viewpoint of both the home economy and the recipient host economies. Among the cases presented are the global restructuring of the Korean automobile industry and the transfer of automotive technology to China via Taiwan. Other studies, from the electronics industry, look at production sites in Malaysia, backward integration in Singapore, and forward integration in Hong Kong. • The State as Parent: International Research Perspectives on Interventions with Young Persons

Springer The State as Parent: International Research Perspectives on Interventions with Young Persons

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThe thirty-five chapters in this book are edited versions of papers presented at the Advanced Research Workshop, State Intervention on Behalf of Children and Youth, which took place in Maratea, Italy, February 20-24, 1989. The Workshop was attended by leading child welfare researchers from most of the Western countries. Represented were scholars and practitioners from disciplines as diverse as law, social work, neurology, economics, political science, education, psychology, and psychiatry. This variety of disciplines considerably enriched the discussions at the Workshop and is reflected in a set of interesting and, we believe, potentially useful research papers. This book is divided into four sections, each dealing with dominant themes of state intervention. The first section deals with research on organizing for state intervention and related ways of providing accountability. The second section deals with research on young persons in conflict with the law, the third with research on child abuse and the final section with research on children in care. Many of the matters addressed in these papers relate to more than one of the topical theme headings and, therefore, might well have been located in different sections of the volume. Each section is introduced by an introductory statement that provides an overview of the papers and issues addressed, and suggests an agenda of research work to be undertaken. These introductions are based largely on workshop discussions and do not necessarily represent the views of their identified authors.Table of ContentsI Introduction: Research On Organization and Accountability For State Intervention.- 1. Then you fall off. 'A danger path this is. ' When you follow the path of your desire and enthusiasm and emotion, keep your mind in control, and don't let it pull you compulsively into disaster. " Joseph Campbell, The Power of Myth Through ten years of working with and observing scientists in the bio medical fields, I have found Joseph Campbell's words to be especially applicable to the scientist who decides to embark on an entrepreneurial journey. Joseph Campbell was not a student of entrepreneurship. His scholarship was contained in a series of comprehensive studies of mythology, the captivating stories of mankind's search over the ages for truth, meaning and significance. Still, his advice here contains many of the essential ingredients of successful science-based venturing: the charting of new ground socially, technological breakthroughs, enthusiasm and emotion balanced by careful reasoning, and finally, awareness of the danger of neglecting details. Coming from such a different philosophical and occupational culture into entrepreneurship and business, the scientist faces extraordinary challenges although the rewards of putting together a successful company can be equally satisfying.Table of ContentsI Introduction, Research and Methodology.- 1. Book SynopsisIn this volume, leading modern economic historians show how analysis of past experiences contributes to a better understanding of present-day economic conditions; they offer important insights into major challenges that will occupy the attention of policy makers in the coming decades. The seventeen essays are organised around three major themes, the first of which is the changing constellation of forces sustaining long-run economic growth in market economies. The second major theme concerns the contemporary challenges posed by transitions in economic and political regimes, and by ideologies that represent legacies from past economic conditions that still affect policy responses to new ''crises''. The third theme is modern economic growth''s diverse implications for human economic welfare - in terms of economic security, nutritional and health status, and old age support - and the institutional mechanisms communities have developed to cope with the risks that individuals are exposed to Table of ContentsPART ONE: DRIVERS OF LONG-TERM ECONOMIC GROWTH ; PART TWO: CHANGES IN ECONOMIC REGIMES AND IDEOLOGIES ; PART THREE: WELFARE, WELL-BEING AND INDIVIDUAL ECONOMIC SECURITY

Book SynopsisThe rise and fall of the Department of Economic Affairs (DEA) parallels the promised but eventually unfulfilled modernization agenda of the 1964-6 Wilson government. The diary kept by Samuel Brittan (in contravention of civil service rules) for the fourteen months in which he served as an ''irregular'' in the DEA provides a unique source for understanding the growth ambitions of the new government and why they quickly ran into the sands. Published here in full, with extensive notes, the diary sheds light on the Wilson government more broadly, giving insights into the ''great reappraisal'' of economic policy, the reform of government institutions and the personalities of those involved.Samuel Brittan emerged as the most important economic journalist of his generation (at the Financial Times from 1955, with brief interruptions, to the present). His diary is would be of interest for that reason alone, but it has a double value because of the special place that his book, The Treasury underTrade ReviewFrom the perspective of the serious scholar ... this is a most valuable resource ... The University of Chicago Press Inheritance of Loss China Japan and the Political

Book SynopsisHow do contemporary generations come to terms with losses inflicted by imperialism, colonialism, and war that took place decades ago? How do descendants of perpetrators and victims establish new relations in today's globalized economy? With Inheritance of Loss, Yukiko Koga approaches these questions through the unique lens of inheritance, focusing on Northeast China, the former site of the Japanese Puppet State Manchukuo, where municipal governments now court Japanese as investors and tourists. As China transitions to a market-oriented society, this region is restoring long-neglected colonial-era structures to boost tourism and inviting former colonial industries to create special economic zones, while unexpectedly unearthing chemical weapons abandoned by the Japanese Imperial Army at the end of World War II.
