  • The Gig Economy: A Critical Introduction

John Wiley and Sons Ltd The Gig Economy: A Critical Introduction

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisAll of a sudden, everybody’s talking about the gig economy. From taxi drivers to pizza deliverers to the unemployed, we are all aware of the huge changes that it is driving in our lives as workers, consumers and citizens. This is the first comprehensive overview of this highly topical subject. Drawing upon years of research, stories from gig workers, and a review of the key trends and debates, Jamie Woodcock and Mark Graham shed light on how the gig economy came to be, how it works and what it’s like to work in it. They show that, although it has facilitated innovative new services and created jobs for millions, it is not without cost. It allows businesses and governments to generate value while passing significant risk and responsibility onto the workers that make it possible. This is not, however, an argument for turning back the clock. Instead, the authors outline four strategies that can produce a fairer platform economy that works for everyone. Woodcock and Graham’s critical introduction will be essential reading for students, scholars and general readers interested in the massive shifts that characterize our modern digital economy.Trade Review"Challenging and important, giving voice to workers on the front line of our growing gig economy, this book is a must read for trade unionists, policymakers and everyone with an interest in making work better amidst rapid technological change."Frances O'Grady, Trades Union Congress General Secretary "At a time when governments the world over turn away from workers, scholar-activists Woodcock and Graham offer a critical introduction to the global gig economy. They investigate innovative ways in which new forms of unions can help to tackle the Trojan Horse of gig labour."Trebor Scholz, Director, Institute for the Cooperative Digital Economy at The New School "[A] vital new contribution."Economic & Political WeeklyTable of ContentsAcknowledgements Introduction Chapter 1: Where did the gig economy come from? • The Case for Medicare for All

John Wiley and Sons Ltd The Case for Medicare for All

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisLargely privately funded with relatively little public regulation, the United States healthcare system is both expensive and inefficient, providing poor care to large parts of the population. For decades, Americans have wrestled with how to fix their broken healthcare system. In this razor-sharp contribution to the healthcare debate, leading economist and former adviser to Bernie Sanders Gerald Friedman recommends that we build on what works: a Medicare system that already efficiently provides healthcare for millions of Americans. Rejecting the discredited idea that healthcare should be treated like any other commodity, Friedman shows that healthcare is distinctive and can be best provided only through universal program of social insurance. Deftly exposing the absurdities of the opponents of reform, Friedman shows in detail how the solution to our health care crisis is staring us in the face: enroll everyone in Medicare to improve the health of all Americans. This bold and brilliantly argued book is essential reading for anyone who wants to see Congress and the White House act to provide America with a 21st century healthcare system.Trade Review“As we enter a new era in the fight for universal healthcare in America, Professor Friedman’s book distills the failures of our current system – and the complexities of what should replace it – into a compelling and easy-to-understand explainer for anyone looking to understand Medicare for All. This is a must-read for anyone who wants to go beyond the headlines to get a nuanced account of the politics and policy behind Medicare for All.”Jim McGovern, Congressman for the 2nd District of Massachusetts "We need a clear, concise analysis of universal Medicare in all its forms that cuts through the complexities, and that is what Professor Friedman has given us. As he shows, sixty-five million of us already enjoy its benefits in the U.S., an eloquent demonstration of its superiority in cost and efficiency to the private competition.”Michael Dukakis, Former Governor of Massachusetts and Democratic Party Presidential Nominee 1988 “Professor Friedman is one of the leading thinkers in the country on the economics that underpin universal healthcare coverage. His visionary work in The Case for Medicare for All is just what our country needs right now. The inequities in our current healthcare system are glaring and inexcusable, and I’m grateful to have Professor Friedman’s important and timely research in order to better understand how Massachusetts can transition from our current health care system to a single payer system.”Joanne M. Comerford, Massachussetts State Senator and former Campaign Director at MoveOn “Economics Professor Gerald Friedman has devoted his career to defending Medicare for All. In this convincing book, he explains his reasoning and why America would be transformed for the better.”Walter Tsou, University of PennsylvaniaTable of ContentsFigures and Tables Acknowledgements Preface: We Need Better Introduction: The Failure of Free Market Healthcare Chapter One: Why Markets Cannot Work in Healthcare Chapter Two: Can We Afford Medicare for All? • Western Capitalism in Transition: Global

Manchester University Press Western Capitalism in Transition: Global

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisSince its emergence at the end of the seventeenth century, industrial capitalism as a specific form of social organisation has set recurrent challenges to its own persistence, and until today, it has proved to be successful to develop new ways of accumulation based on its capacity of adaptation. Is this process of transition now accelerating or reaching an end point? This book is a critical exploration of capitalism in transition, bringing together cutting edge, world renowned scholars who reflect from different disciplinary points of view. This collection engages with the primarily Western themes of welfare capitalism and social fragmentation. Structured over three parts, the book analyses; the transformations of welfare societies and capitalism with a focus on South European welfare states and their (in)capacity to tackle poverty; the transformation of work and migration with a special attention to informality and the question of social rights; and the transformation of cities. This book is relevant to United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 1, No poverty.Trade Review'Two aspects constitute the value added by this book. First, it defines a framework for addressing issues related to Western capitalism throughout the various sections. Secondly, and strictly related to the issues being faced, innovative and inclusive initiatives to overcome the pessimistic vision are discussed in this book. • Manchester University Press The Pound and the Fury: Why Anger and Confusion

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisWhat’s wrong with the UK economy? Everyone has an opinion. But no one has an answer. Why?For decades, our economy has failed to work for ordinary citizens: stagnant wages have been combined with underemployment and rising costs of basic goods like healthcare, education and housing. At the same time, a small minority of the population make obscene profits, while in the background we continue to hurtle headlong into an environmental emergency. While there is no shortage of anger and anti-elite sentiment expressed in what is often referred to as the ‘culture wars’, no significant challenge to the dominant economic model has broken into the mainstream. The pound and the fury argues that behind this failure of imagination are a set of myths about how the economy works, myths that stifle debate and block change. This book analyses the origins of these myths and how they might be dispelled at a time when, away from the public gaze, economic theory is opening up new possibilities of economic action. Possibilities that, as we emerge from the chaos of COVID-19, could lead to the radical structural changes we desperately need.Trade Review‘A brilliant expose of how our financial system continues to operate largely unquestioned based on a blueprint for confusing and exploiting people.’ Danny Dorling, author of Slowdown: The End of the Great Acceleration - and Why It's Good for the Planet, the Economy, and Our Lives ‘Read this book if you want to understand the discriminative and unfair power relations behind the economy and why the public are deliberately blinded by myth and disinformation.’ Oliver James, author of Affluenza: How to be successful and stay sane‘A must read for anyone interested in the economy and economic policy as we face up to the huge challenges of rising inequality, financial instability and environmental breakdown.’ Josh Ryan-Collins, Head of Finance and Macroeconomics at the Institute for Innovation and Public Purpose and co-author of Where Does Money Come From?'A brilliantly engaging exploration of the self-serving mythologies that sustain our economy in the face of its growing dysfunctions and inequalities. • Bankruptcy, Bubbles and Bailouts: The Inside

Manchester University Press Bankruptcy, Bubbles and Bailouts: The Inside

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThe Treasury is one of Britain’s oldest, most powerful and secretive institutions, one that has played a central role in shaping the country's economic system. But all too often it has escaped public scrutiny when it comes to investigating the ups and downs of the UK economy. When portrayed, it is usually as a bedrock of government stability in times of crisis, repeatedly rescuing the nation’s finances from the hands of posturing politicians and the combustions of world financial markets. However, there is another side to the story. In between the highs there have been many lows, from botched privatizations to dubious private finance initiatives, from failing to spot the great financial crisis to facilitating ever-growing inequalities.Davis’s book goes behind the scenes to offer an inside history of the Treasury, in the words of the chancellors, advisors and civil servants themselves. It shows the shortcomings as well as the successes, the personalities and the thinking which have shaped Britain’s economy since the mid-1970s. Based on interviews with over fifty key figures, it offers a fascinating, alternative insight on how and why the UK economy came to function as it does today, and why reform is long overdue.Trade Review'At the heart of British policymaking stands the mighty Treasury, instinctively pro-market, conservative and centralising. Its achievement is to preserve stability and its failure is to stifle innovation. In this superb book, Aeron Davis tells a somewhat depressing story of institutional continuity in the midst of change over half a century. Institutions matter. The example of Her Majesty's Treasury shows how and why.'Martin Wolf, chief economics commentator at the Financial TimesOne of the Financial Times' Best Books of 2022: Economics'Aeron Davis's balanced, historical account of unaccountable, technocratic power is an essential read.' Ann Pettifor, author and Director of Policy Research in Macroeconomics at PRIME'Through fascinating and surprisingly candid interviews with those who ran the Treasury over decades, Aeron Davis has put the politics back into UK economics, revealing the personalities and ideologies that have profoundly shaped the nation's most powerful institution and, through it, the whole economy. For anyone seeking to understand and influence UK policymaking - whichever political party is in power - this book is an essential and riveting read.'Kate Raworth, author of Doughnut Economics'After all, as Aeron Davis shows in this perceptive and revealing history of the past half-century of the department that underwrites every British political decision, the Treasury has a very strong instinct for self-preservation. Many of the most important – and the most damaging – policies of recent decades have been developed and promoted by the Treasury’s institutional compulsion to settle the national balance sheet.'Will Dunn, The New Statesman'This is a splendid survey of a key department of state. The Treasury dominates the state machine.'Will Podmore, Morning Star 'It should be clear from this short review that this book is not just an interesting overview of the Treasury over the last 40+ years. It is also an invaluable record of what some of the key political and official actors involved in UK economic policy thought they were doing at the time and how they view that in retrospect. I thoroughly recommend reading it to anyone interested in the recent economic history of the UK.'Simon Wren-Lewis, Emeritus Professor of Economics and Fellow of Merton College, University of Oxford 'Aeron Davis lucidly and accessibly illuminates an institution, the UK Treasury, that prides itself on being the salvation of the British economy when, in fact, it is a major contributory factor in its sub-par performance. Combining responsibility for controlling the public finances and economic management, the latter has very much played second fiddle, increasingly contracted out to third parties, with over-reliance on a bloated financial sector and successive property bubbles to keep everything afloat. The analysis thematically unfolds from the IMF debacle under the Callaghan Labour Government, to the Brexit and Covid crises under the Johnson Conservative Government. Essential reading for academics as a case study of the importance of an institutional perspective - and for a more general readership to understand all that has gone wrong with the British economy over the last half century.'Chris Painter, Emeritus Professor of Public Policy and Management, Birmingham City University -- .Table of Contents1 Introduction: The Treasury as saviour?2 Creative destruction and the road to nowhere: A microeconomists’ story3 Financialization not neoliberalism: The City’s Trojan Horse enters the Treasury4 Pseudo-Keynesianism, debt and magic money trees: The financial fixers come to town5 Visions of Empire and globalisation: Rise of the internationalists6 The great financial crash and the great failed paradigm shift: A technocrats’ tale7 Austerity, spin, and the road to Brexit: Posh boys take charge8 Brexit and Covid postscript: Reckless opportunists gain control9 Conclusions: An institutional perspective on UK economic historyList of intervieweesAcknowledgementsList of abbreviationsIndex

  • Manchester University Press Capitalism in Contemporary Iran: Capital

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisThis book traces the patterns of capital accumulation and the changes in class and state formation emanating from it in Iran during the global neoliberal era. It demonstrates how there are inner connections between the nature of contemporary development in Iran, the form of the state, the ongoing sociopolitical transformations in society and the geopolitical tensions with the West. Simultaneously, it highlights that these issues should be explored in terms of their internal relations to the motions and tendencies of neoliberal global capitalism and resulting geopolitics. Accordingly, the book demonstrates that Iranian neoliberalisation has brought about new contested class dynamics that have fundamentally reconstructed the Iranian ruling class, aggressively shaped and reshaped the working class and the poor, and drastically impacted the state form and its foreign policy.Trade Review'This is a powerful and highly original account of Iran’s political economy. Unlike so much analysis and commentary on Iran, Valadbaygi carefully situates processes of domestic class formation and the country’s deep social antagonisms within the development of the wider capitalist world market. This deeply insightful re-telling of Iran’s history - stretching from the 1979 revolution through to the recent ‘Women, Life, Freedom’ revolts - is a must-read for understanding Iran’s place in the current global order, as well as the country’s ongoing and fractious political struggles.' Adam Hanieh, University of Exeter'Capitalism in contemporary Iran provides an original account of the modern Iran that rethinks its complex development and revolutionary ruptures through the wider dynamics of global capitalism and its geopolitical sinews. The first book-length application of the philosophy of internal relations to capitalist development in Iran, Capitalism in contemporary Iran synthesises the global and the local to rethink Iran beyond exceptionalism and culturalism through the intersection of social classes, the state, and global capitalism. Capitalism in contemporary Iran is a must read for academics, students and political practitioners alike.' Kamran Matin, University of Sussex'With Capitalism in Contemporary Iran Kayhan Valadbaygi delivers the most influential single book on the making of contemporary Iran and therefore the most valuable in helping us to understand the geopolitics of our times.' Adam David Morton (University of Sydney), co-author with Andreas Bieler of Global Capitalism, Global War, Global Crisis.'This book successfully situates Iran in the global history and historical sociology of capitalism. • Manchester University Press Foundational Economy: The Infrastructure of

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisThe foundational economy is everywhere: from clean water to care homes, schools to hospitals, these vital services were established between 1880 and 1980 to be collectively paid for, collectively delivered and collectively consumed. This essential framework has transformed the lives of billions, but in the last generation it has come under considerable attack. Privatisation, market choice and outsourcing have depleted the material infrastructure at the core of everyday life, and the foundational economy is in desperate need of renewal. This book sets out the principles and initiatives to end the degradation of the foundational economy and restore its essential place in society. In the face of our growing needs, the authors argue, politics must refocus on foundational consumption and universal minimum access and quality. This book is relevant to United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 8, Decent work and economic growthTrade Review'A compelling counter-project against neoliberalism: restoring the collective foundations of everyday life.'Wolfgang Streeck, Max Planck‘This is an interesting and important contribution to the economic debates going on today. It underlines the centrality of collectivism and universalism as pillars of a decent society, as well as asking searching questions about the kind of solutions we need to the economic problems of our age.’John McDonnell, Shadow Chancellor of the Exchequer (2015-20)‘There is now a widespread and growing view that the UK economy has ceased to work effectively for ordinary people. This original and challenging book sets out a compelling argument for why this is happening. You do not have to sign up to every individual point made in the book to recognise the power of the overall argument. At the heart of the book is the idea of the ‘foundational economy’, its rise in the municipal era, its fall in the neo liberal era and how it might be renewed again. The term foundational may not be in everyday use but what it describes represents the essential fabric of our lives - the essential infrastructure of energy, water, and transport and the essential services of education, health and care. These are distinguished by being essentially collective goods. They cannot simply be ‘bought’ by an individual but must be decided by society as a whole. For the last 30 or so years, it has been the accepted wisdom of many politicians and policy makers that these services are best enabled publicly but delivered privately. The book provides a robust challenge to this view. Those looking to find individual policy solutions in this book will be disappointed. It is much more about changing the way we think about economics and society. But is does contain a message of hope in some pretty challenging times. Recommended reading lists for civil servants are quite a common occurrence at Christmas time. This book deserves to be on those lists.’Lord Bob Kerslake, Head of the UK Civil Service (2011-14)‘In the honourable tradition of provincial radicalism, the Foundational Economy Collective open new horizons for social, economic and political renewal with their provocative and yet practical proposals for reconstructing everyday economies. This is not the time for incremental tinkering with the status quo, nor critique solely for its own sake. Instead, the Foundational Economy delivers an arresting and imaginative manifesto for rebuilding our communities from the ground up. Founded on a political economy of hope, not despair, this approach is radical in all of the best senses of the word: it cuts to the root of wicked problems, rethinking from first principles; it steadfastly refuses to be cowed or constrained by stale orthodoxies; and it illuminates an alternative pathway, guided by the principles of inclusive citizenship, social innovation, ethical investment, and progressive political renewal. This is a book that is sure to change some minds, and maybe even the future.’Jamie Peck, University of British Columbia, Canada‘Read this book if you want to understand why the NHS is not funded through taxes raised from the private sector; if you want to know why our children will not be mostly employed in ‘high tech’ industry in future (and cannot be); or why the welfare state was a good protection racket; why British privatized rail companies lie so much about their ‘greatness’; why care homes are so badly run at such great private profit by ‘entrepreneurs’; and how those who rob us so often claim a defense of ‘diminished responsibility’ for their acts of great harm. All that is in just the first two dozen pages of the ‘Foundational Economy'. The collective that produced this book of wonders deserves to be warmly congratulated on producing such a clear explanation of, amongst so much else, how ‘the British and Americans led the way to a new kind of rentier capitalism.’ And what now to do about it – in a way that cannot be as easily extinguished as radical politics in the recent past has been.’Danny Dorling, University of Oxford‘A dedicated group of scholars across a broad range of disciplines at Manchester University have long led the way in detailing and analysing what the late Michael Moran, one of the foremost among them, identified as the “financial services revolution” at the root of the transformation of public policy into the handmaiden of privatization and marketization. This new book, perfectly timed to coincide with the growing populist disgust with what they call “a generation of failure to make the market work”, concentrates on penetrating the fog currently generated by all the talk across the political spectrum about the importance of investment in infrastructure. Brilliantly conceiving and concisely explaining in historical and comparative perspective the social and moral basis of “foundational” goods and services, this book is essential reading for all concerned to escape the predations of financial engineering and bring the “everyday infrastructure of civilized life” into the public domain under democratic control.’Leo Panitch, Former Editor of The Socialist Register, York University, Canada‘In this book, the authors present an innovative and creative account of economic development - one driven by the need to preserve our 'Foundational Economy' in Europe. To do this the authors convincingly make the case that Europe's foundational economy is a significant driver of social not simply individual market driven consumption. The distinctive primary role of public policy is about how experimentation, at a local level, can be directed to help secure the continuity of basic foundational services upon which Europe's citizens depend and need - to flourish.’Theodor Dumitru Stolojan, Prime Minister of Romania (1991-2), Member of the European Parliament (2007-19)‘In Foundational economy, we are presented with an alternative and refreshing view of social policy. The innovative argument presented by this Europe-wide collective group of authors is that the primary role of public policy should be re-aligned towards promoting the 'Foundational Economy'. These foundational activities are often overlooked and, to a significant extent, taken for granted. But they should not be overlooked because these activities generate social consumption upon which all citizens across Europe depend for our collective welfare, household employment and general well-being.’Eva Kaili MEP, Group of the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats in the European Parliament‘For decades economic policy has been done to people and not with and by them. It has not for the most part focused on the sectors of the economy that matter to people every day or on the communities that most need to benefit. The foundational economy approach represents a move away from grand industrial projects and the unaccountable power of neo-classical economics. In a world of falling livings standards, wellbeing in reverse gear, enormous wealth inequality and urgent environmental crises, it is an approach whose time has come.’Andrew Pendleton, Director of Policy and Advocacy at the New Economics Foundation (2017-20)‘The rise in economic, social and recognition inequalities and the correlated authoritarian dynamic are not the result of unavoidable system changes, but of policy choices and a change in both balance of power and common sense. The research team launching the 'Foundational Economy' project addresses this issue by forcefully outlining a reversal of policy making, where people's capabilities, substantial freedom and social consumption regain center stage. A welcomed contribution to the urgent rethinking of economics and politics’.Fabrizio Barca, Italian Minister for Territorial Cohesion (2011-13)‘Something has gone very wrong with the British economy. Investment and growth is poor and the proceeds are not fairly shared. Pay is unequal and stagnating for the majority. Too many people are trapped in insecure, low-paid and zero hours work. Outsourcing giants make a killing extracting value from our public services. And affordable housing remains a distant dream, especially for young families. This is the everyday reality that working people face and The Foundational Economy sets out a razor sharp analysis of the reasons why. But, more importantly, it delivers practical proposals for change. A smart and dynamic state at a national and local level, democratisation of our communities and workplaces, investment in public services - and those parts of our economy that most people depend on and where most people earn their living. This agenda poses big challenges for policy makers, politicians and civil society alike. But they must be met if we are to have an intelligent industrial policy for economic justice and 21st century public services that meet the needs of every community across the UK. Doing more of the same is not an option. The Foundational Economy provides a springboard for the new deal working people need.’Frances O’Grady, General Secretary, Trades Union Congress‘Citizens have rights to basic services because their public provision underpins capacities and capabilities for all. This inspirational reformulation of the Foundational Economy explains why we need to stop wrecking our public services in Europe and start refashioning their future in the 21st century. It is not enough to claim that the Foundation Economy is a moral enterprise and the authors lay out new directions for social innovation enabling us to reinvent both our political practice and the world we hope for.’Henrietta L. Moore, Director of the UCL Institute for Global Prosperity‘This fascinating book, Foundational Economy, can be seen as a contribution to the debate about measuring, understanding and, ultimately, reshaping economic systems. More than that, it is a critique of existing custom and practice when measuring, understanding and shaping the economy. This critique is as foundational as the book’s title. We are some way short of a well-defined and widely-agreed set of new weights and measures for the economy. And we are a long way short of knowing which policy tools best deliver the private and collective goods society needs to flourish. This book tackles head-on some of those big questions about the economy. It also begins the process of providing answers. As in the natural sciences, as an approach I think this offers hope for societal, as well as scientific, advance.’Andy Haldane, former Chief Economist, Bank of England‘Since 1988, Barcelona has developed five strategic plans, all of them having "business friendly" postulates as their basis. When a year ago the new team in charge of the future metropolitan strategy decided to place five basic elements for life (air, water, food, energy and housing) as the core elements for that strategy, we did not know a word about the proposal of the Foundational Economy. Now that we have had the opportunity to read this inspiring book, we not only consider our vision strengthened, but we also have the elements to more solidly support it and even reinforce it, incorporating some of the valuable insights that the authors provide. A must-read for all of us who are committed to improve wellbeing in our cities and our society in general.’Oriol Estela Barnet, General Co-ordinator of PEMB, Barcelona'A great new book that deserves a wide readership.'Andrea Bernardi, New Books Network -- .Table of Contents1 Introduction: foundational matters2 (Re)discovering the foundational3 Wrecking the foundational4 The constitution of the foundational5 Renewing the foundationalAfterword by Andy HaldaneIndex

Book SynopsisThe notion of ‘clickbait’ speaks to the intersection of money, technology, and desire, suggesting a cunning ruse to profit from unsavoury inclinations of one kind or another. Clickbait capitalism pursues the idea that the entire contemporary economy is just such a ruse; an elaborate exercise in psychological capture and release.Pushing beyond rationalist accounts of economic life, this volume puts psychoanalysis and political economy into conversation with the cutting edges of capitalist development. Perennial questions of death, sex, aggression, enjoyment, despair, hope, and revenge are followed onto the terrain of the contemporary, with chapters devoted to social media, online dating apps, cryptocurrencies, NFTs, and meme stocks. The result is a unique and compelling portrait of the latest institutions to stage, channel, or reconfigure the psychic energies of political and economic life.Trade ReviewAs the pursuit of profit becomes increasingly surreal, virtual, and exotic by the day, the symbiosis between libidinal and financial flows demands to be reframed and rethought. Indeed, the timing could not be better for this vital and important collection of essays, which do precisely that. Profound and brilliant' Robert Skidelsky 'A fascinating book, bursting with paradoxes, riddles and counterintuitive ideas that will challenge some of your strongest beliefs about how society works' Daniel Susskind We’ve learned that the way to get ahead is through strong will, grit and naked ambition. The belief that self-interest makes the world go round has served us well: it has helped make our society more affluent. But does that premise still hold? In Beyond Self-Interest, Krzysztof Pelc argues that those who prosper increasingly do so by spurning prosperity, or by convincing others that they are pursuing passion, purpose, love of craft – anything but their own self-advancement. From the Puritans, who followed a religious calling and yet made a killing; to the fastest-growing firms of today, who claim to be ‘changing to the world’ through ‘doing what they love’, declaring passion over profit is a profitable move. A bold, incisive and original work that draws on three centuries of intellectual thought, Beyond Self-Interest is a book to upend how we relate to capitalism. What if the true driver of market society is not the appearance of self-interest, but its opposite?Trade ReviewIt takes scholarly courage and knowledge to upend Adam Smith, but this is what Krzysztof Pelc has done in this profound and brilliant study. Book SynopsisLiberal democracies are under increasing pressure. Growing discontent about inequality, lack of political participation and identity have rekindled populism and a shift away from liberal values. This book argues that liberalism’s reliance on a utilitarian policy framework has resulted in increased concentrations of power, restricting freedom and equality. It examines five key areas of public policy: monetary policy, private property and liability, the structure of the state, product markets and labour markets. Drawing on the German ordoliberal tradition and its founding principle of the dispersal of power, the book proposes an alternative public policy framework. In doing so, it offers a practical pathway to realign policy making with liberal ideas.Trade Review“I liked Thomas Aubrey’s short book. It could alternatively be called, Confronting the weaknesses of the Anglo-Saxon economic model. But it does this in a thoughtful way, contrasting the utilitarian tradition of UK/US economic policy with (West) Germany and the “underlying ordoliberal principle of power dispersion.”” The Enlightened EconomistTable of ContentsChapter 1: Introduction Chapter 2: The Liberal Order and Its Utilitarian Foundation Chapter 3 the Rise of Ordo Chapter 4 the West German Experiment and the Decline of Ordo Chapter 5 Monetary Policy: The Illiberal Practice of Inflation Targeting Chapter 6 Liability and Private Property: Confronting the Perfect Externalising Machine Chapter 7 Structure of the State: Community and Vitalpolitik Chapter 8 Labour Markets: Continuous Training and Flexibility Chapter 9 Product Markets: Enforcing the Price Mechanism Chapter 10: Confronting Liberalism’s Fatal Flaw Appendix: Methodology Used for Measuring the Dispersal of Public and Private Power by Policy Field

Book SynopsisWestern exceptionalism-the idea that European civilizations are freer, wealthier, and less violent-is a widespread and powerful political idea. It has been a source of peace and prosperity in some societies, and of ethnic cleansing and havoc in others.Yet in The Invention of Power, Bruce Bueno de Mesquita draws on his expertise in political maneuvering, deal-making, and game theory to present a revolutionary new theory of Western exceptionalism: that a single, rarely discussed event in the twelfth century changed the course of European and world history. By creating a compromise between churches and nation-states that, in effect, traded money for power and power for money, the 1122 Concordat of Worms incentivized economic growth, facilitated secularization, and improved the lot of the citizenry, all of which set European countries on a course for prosperity. In the centuries since, countries that have had a similar dynamic of competition between church and state have been consistently better off than those that have not.The Invention of Power upends conventional thinking about European culture, religion, and race and presents a persuasive new vision of world history.

Book SynopsisNamed a Best Book of the Year by Amazon.com and the Washington Post Three years ago, Pulitzer Prize-winner Chris Hedges and award-winning cartoonist and journalist Joe Sacco set out to take a look at the sacrifice zones, those areas in America that have been offered up for exploitation in the name of profit, progress, and technological advancement. They wanted to show in words and drawings what life looks like in places where the marketplace rules without constraints, where human beings and the natural world are used and then discarded to maximize profit. Days of Destruction, Days of Revolt is the searing account of their travels.Trade Review"Sacco's sections are uniformly brilliant. The tone is controlled, the writing smart, the narration neutral... This is an important book." --New York Times Book Review "An unabashedly polemic, angry manifesto that is certain to open eyes, intensify outrage and incite argument about corporate greed... Through immersion reportage and graphic narrative, the duo illuminate the human and environmental devastation in those communities, with the warning that no one is immune... A call for a new American revolution, passionately proclaimed." --Kirkus (Starred Review) "Days of Destruction, Days of Revolt is a journey through contemporary American misery and what can be done to change the course, interpreted through the eyes of two of today's most relevant literary journalists... The graphics illustrate what words alone cannot, capturing a past as it's told, where there's no longer anything left to photograph." --Asbury Park Press "[T]he radical disjunction between how Hedges and Sacco approach their subjects is fascinating and instructive. Hedges is at ease with the grand, sweeping Howard Zinn--moments of matchbook history... And if sweeping, historical connect-the-dots is your cup of tea, then you will find Hedges deeply moving. But if, like Sacco, you distrust all history that does not have a face, a name, and a voice behind it, you will find more to call you to action in the voices that speak from the decimated landscapes of America's deepest poverty, which we (like Dickens's "telescopic philanthropists") know even less well than we do the sufferings of peoples halfway around the world. Together, Sacco and Hedges might just have created a form that can speak across divides unbridgeable without the supplement of graphic narrative." --Public Books "...a bleak, fist-shaking look at the effects of global capitalism in the United States." --Joe Gross, Austin American-Statesman "This is a book that should warm the hearts of political activists such as Naomi Klein or the nonagenerian Pete Seeger. And cause apoplexy among the Tea Party and its fellow travellers... Sure, it's a polemic, but it's a polemic with a human face." --Globe and Mail (Canada) "Days of Destruction, Days of Revolt is a harrowing account of the exploited American underclass... It is their stories that shape Days of Destruction, Days of Revolt to be a mesmeric indictment of an America that has failed its populace... From the title alone it is evident that neither Hedges nor Sacco remain objective or shy away from the palpable condemnation of capitalism and the American government. Regardless, they develop an accurate account of the despondency that plagues and divides American culture. This is an imperative read in an era where widespread economic depression and grief reign supreme... Days of Destruction, Days of Revolt is powerful and remarkable, arguably one of the best publications of the year." --PopMatters.com "This is an important book." --Winnipeg Free Press (Canada) "It is a fascinating journey... This book hit me in the gut. It will move you to engage in battle." --Ed Garvey "This searing indictment of our unsustainable society is unsettling. To keep our chance for dignity, we must do our part to champion the organizers and whistleblowers, committee members and protesters. Amen. Pass the word." --Brooklyn Rail "[H]arrowing descriptions... Hedges tells the story, not only of the people but of the town, and despite the differences in setting, certain similarities show through: poverty, addiction, violence; but more than that, a long series of broken promises and mounting despair. Sacco illustrates these chapters with his distinctive, careful line drawings... [A]n excellent piece of journalism -- engaging, troubling, and in its own way, beautiful." --TowardFreedom.com "As quixotic as the quest may seem, Days of Destruction brings the rhetoric and the reality into a nobler focus after a very disturbing tour." --The Star-Ledger (New Jersey) "It's rare that a book carries so much courage and conviction, forcing reflection and an urge to immediately rectify the problems." --Bookslut "A powerful social and political exploration." --Midwest Book Review/California Bookwatch "[Days of Destruction, Days of Revolt] is, without question, the most profoundly disquieting (and downright shocking) portrait of modern America in recent years, and one that is essential reading for anyone wanting to comprehend the quotidian struggle of what sociologists called 'the underclass'. To describe the book as Dickensian in its horror-show reports of frontline industrial decrepitude and socio-economic dysfunction is to engage in understatement... Days of Destruction, Days of Revolt is unapologetically combative and profoundly J'accuse. And though many a conservative think-tanker could try to punch holes in its arguments no one can remain unmoved or unsettled by its brilliantly documented reportage from the precipice of a society that prefers to turn a blind eye to its nightmarish underside." --The Times (Saturday Review) "[B]rilliant combination of prose and graphic comics." --Ralph Nader "Days of Destruction, Days of Revolt (Nation) is as moving a portrait of poverty and as compelling a call to action as Michael Harrington's 'The Other America,' published in 1962." --Boston Globe "Days of Destruction, Days of Revolt is a gripping and thoroughly researched polemic." --Grantland "[R]ead Days of Destruction, Days of Revolt to know what is happening in this country." --Caffeinated Muslim "... a scorching look at communities burned out not by foreign bombs but by American capitalism." --The Stranger (Seattle) "When their narrative culminates in Zucotti Park, readers will feel just as outraged as the protesters portrayed on the page." --Barnes and Noble Review "Days of Destruction, Days of Revolt examines how corruption and greed have shaped the history of the United States in an unfortunate way... This is an excellent book for those who actually need a reason to revolt, and should be read by anyone seeking public office." --San Francisco/Sacramento Book Review "Be prepared for an emotional experience without a happy ending. Be prepared to be defensive. Be prepared to be angry. Be prepared to be ashamed... [T]he book is accompanied by sections that are a graphic novel approach to the individual stories of the real people interviewed in these zones of despair. What is so overpowering, and discussable, in these biographies is that they read as much like a confessional as they do a history... Can there be anything more important to discuss?" --Book Group Buzz, Booklist Online "This is indeed an extraordinary, must read book." --OpEdNews.com

Book SynopsisIn The Political Economy of the Spectacle and Postmodern Caste, John Asimakopoulos analyzes the political economy of the society of the spectacle, a philosophical concept developed by Guy Debord and Jean Baudrillard. Using the analytical tools of social science and historical research, Asimakopoulos reveals that all societies in every epoch have been and continue to be caste systems legitimized by various ideologies. He concludes that there is no such thing as capitalism (or socialism)—only a caste system hidden behind capitalist ideology. Asimakopoulos's approach is broad, interdisciplinary, and draws on both quantitative and qualitative data to weave a narrative that is clear, well written, and offers much to both specialists and general readers.Table of ContentsForeword Greg PalastAcknowledgementsIllustrationsIntroduction: Busting out of Plato 's Cave1 The Symbolic Institution of Society1Symbolic Interactionism2Interaction Exchange and Collective Norms3Critical Theory and Post-Structuralism/Postmodernism3.1 Cornelius Castoriadis3.2 Michel Foucault3.3 Guy Debord3.4 Jean Baudrillard4Beyond Post-Structuralism/Postmodernism2The Spectacle1Audience Segmentation1.1 Sociocultural and Spatial Segmentation1.2 Educational Segmentation1.3 Economic Segmentation1.4 Political Segmentation2Total Propaganda3Symbolic Institutions3.1 Educational Institutions3.2 Economic Institutions3.3 Political Institutions3.4 Legal Institutions3.5 Protective Institutions3 It 's All Spectacular1Spectacular History2Postmodern Spectacles2.1 Doubleplusgood: Spectacular Capitalism2.2 Plusgood: Spectacular Socialism/Communism3Spectacular Class4The Quantum Mechanics of Value and Capital4.1 The Relativity of Value4.2 There Is No Spoon: Capital(ism)4 The Monetization of Everything1Life, Flesh, and Death2Food, Water, and the Environment3Cities, Nations, and Culture4Time and Space5The Global Spectacle5.1 Finance5.2 Trade5.3 Segmented Labor5 The Structure of Postmodern Caste1Social Order1.1 Privileges and Disabilities Based on Ascription1.2 Who Pays the Piper?1.3 Extreme Structural Inequality2Caste Groups2.1 Ruling Caste2.2 Nobles2.3 Privileged Labor2.4 Required Labor2.5 Precarious Labor2.6 Institutional Slaves3Legitimizing Twenty-First-Century Serfdom3.1 Mr. Baptist Has Been Too Harsh on the SlaversConclusion: Bakunin 's Conundrum Bibliography Index

Book SynopsisIn precarious and tumultuous times, schemes of social support, including cash transfers, are increasingly indispensable. Yet the inadequacy of the nation-state frame of membership that such schemes depend on is becoming evermore evident, as non-citizens form a growing proportion of the populations that welfare states attempt to govern. In Presence and Social Obligation, James Ferguson argues that conceptual resources for solving this problem are closer to hand than we might think. Drawing on a rich anthropology of sharing, he argues that the obligation to share never depends only on membership, but also on presence: on being “here.” Presence and Social Obligation strives to demonstrate that such obligatory sharing based on presence can be observed in the way that marginalized urban populations access state services, however unequally, across the global South. Examples show that such sharing with non-nationals is not some sort of utopian proposal but part of the everyday life of the modern service-delivering state. Presence and Social Obligation is a critical yet refreshing approach to an ever-growing way of being together. • Capitalism and the Sea: The Maritime Factor in

Verso Books Capitalism and the Sea: The Maritime Factor in

Book SynopsisWinner of the IPEG 2022 Book PrizeThe global ocean has through the centuries served as a trade route, strategic space, fish bank and supply chain for the modern capitalist economy. While sea beds are drilled for their fossil fuels and minerals, and coastlines developed for real estate and leisure, the oceans continue to absorb the toxic discharges of our carbon civilization - warming, expanding, and acidifying the blue water part of the planet in ways that will bring unpredictable but irreversible consequences for the rest of the biosphere. In this bold and radical new book, Campling and Colás analyse these and other sea-related phenomena through a historical and geographical lens. In successive chapters dealing with the political economy, ecology and geopolitics of the sea, the authors argue that the earth's geographical separation into land and sea has significant consequences for capitalist development. The distinctive features of this mode of production continuously seek to transcend the land-sea binary in an incessant quest for profit, engendering new alignments of sovereignty, exploitation and appropriation in the capture and coding of maritime spaces and resources.Trade ReviewHere at last is a sophisticated and theoretically informed book about the maritime origins and development of capitalism. After this mighty blow against the bias of terracentrism, the history of the modern world will never look quite the same. -- Marcus Rediker, author of The Slave Ship: A Human HistoryThis ground-breaking, immensely rich and densely argued book shows how criss-crossing sealanes have connected ports and cities, and brought together different modes of production and social classes. Over the centuries, the sea has circulated values, human subjects, and shifting modes of exploitation; in doing this, global capitalism has established new chains of activities and evolving patterns of extraction, exploitation, circulation and distribution of (surplus) value. This mighty work of scholarship traces these human endeavours; in doing this, it has opened fresh avenues of research. * Alfredo Saad-Filho, King’s College London *I can think of no other book that has dealt with the pivotal role of the sea in the evolution of capitalism as well as the wider canvas of capitalism's interaction with the sea with as much innovation and more comprehensively than this fascinating and lucidly written work by Campling and Colás. This is also a profoundly timely intervention, given the horrifying ways in which global warming, the scourge of plastic waste , and capital's ever faster depletion of marine life have degraded the oceans irreversibly. -- Jairus Banaji, author, Theory as History; and A Brief History of Commercial CapitalismCapitalism and the Sea has liberated me from the shackles of my earthbound imaginary. Liam Campling and Alejandro Colás have given us that rare opportunity: to rethink how historical capitalism works, marshalling a breathtaking crystallization of insights from environmental history, political economy, and social history. Capitalism and the Sea unsettles our conventional thinking about how power, profit and oceanic webs of life have shaped modernity, from its genocidal origins to today's planetary crisis. Their word for these gruesome and lucrative entanglements - "terraqueous" - doesn't roll off the tongue, but it will stick with you for a lifetime after reading this book. I will never think about capitalism the same. -- Jason W Moore, author, Capitalism in the Web of LifeThe role of the sea in the modern world is hugely unappreciated. Campling and Colas offer an unrivalled analysis of the political and economic forces that shape our relationship to the sea, and the labour of those who work on and around it. -- Jeremy Anderson, Head of Strategic Research, International Transport Workers' FederationA rich Marxian account of how the maritime made capitalism. Campling and Colas tell the absorbing, deeply researched, and sweeping story of how capitalism was forged through slavery, seaborne trade, naval projection of power, vast maritime empires and modern logistics. Controversial prime minister Narendra Modi promised ‘to break the grip’ of the Bollygarchs, but many tycoons continue to thrive amidst the scandals, exerting huge influence over business and politics. But who are these titans of politics and industry shaping India through this period of breakneck change? And what kind of superpower are they creating? A vivid portrait of a deeply divided nation, The Billionaire Raj makes clear that India’s destiny – prosperous democratic giant or corrupt authoritarian regime – is something that should concern us all.Trade Review‘Compelling…vivid…Crabtree has given us the most comprehensive and eminently readable tour of economic India.’ * Meghnad Desai, Financial Times *‘An excellent survey of India’s economic and political transformation… Crabtree’s Indian story is a cautionary tale of globalization’s excesses and the consequences for one of the world’s most unequal societies.’ * Washington Post *‘A vivid comparison to America’s late 19th-century Gilded Age drives this account of 21st-century India, with a teeming, colourful cast of the super-rich, the ultra-poor, the politically ambitious and the irredeemably corrupt.’ * Financial Times, Books of the Year 2018 *‘Timely reading…Crabtree’s eye for detail…gives some nice close ups…With so many tasty details, it is the right sort of snack to fill a hole as we watch and wait.’ * The Times *‘The analysis really sings when Mr Crabtree finds new ways to capture the collision of profits, politics and public opinion. His account of India’s cut-throat network-TV industry, through the eyes of a star presenter, is thrilling.’ * The Economist *‘A pacey and perspicacious account… Crabtree’s unique achievement is to probe the peculiarities of Indian cronyism and lay out its structural causes… For sheer chutzpah, India’s billionaires provide tremendous value. All this makes for a thoroughly entertaining book, but also for a sadly enfeebled and unequal nation.’ * Oliver Balch, Literary Review *‘A reporting gem, The Billionaire Raj deserves to be widely read.’ * Ashutosh Varshney, Indian Express *‘An eye-opening book from someone who clearly loves his subject.’ * Oliver Bullough, Prospect *‘[A] stylish, sweeping survey of modern day India.’ * Times Literary Supplement *‘A lively and valuable blend of the empirical and the anecdotal… The best parts of Mr. Crabtree’s book, however, aren’t his observations on the civic state of India (although these are certainly valuable and wise). They are his reportage, in which he relates his encounters with several of the men who are emblematic of the billionaire raj.’ * Tunku Varadarajan, Wall Street Journal *‘A nuanced portrait…chock-full of profoundly revealing vignettes from various corners of India’s endlessly diverse society and economy.’ * New York Times *‘James Crabtree, once a hugely-admired star foreign correspondent, has transformed himself into a brilliant writer and analyst of the Indian super-rich. This timely, fascinating and eye-opening book is also – a rarity for a book about money – wonderfully witty and beautifully written.’ -- William Dalrymple‘An enlightening and engaging story of wealth and poverty in India, but also a sad indictment of the power of inequity in subduing and overwhelming its areas of success.’ -- Amartya Sen, winner of the Nobel Prize in Economics‘Crabtree’s stylish writing and sharp insights bring to life the extremes of a country changing with bewildering rapidity, and one the world will find increasingly hard to ignore. James Crabtree does just that in The Billionaire Raj, as he traces the incredible rise of India’s new super-rich and everything they reveal about the state of India’s political economy. Mixing colourful anecdotes with serious analysis, Crabtree’s urgent book gives us far more than just vicarious thrills about India’s new Gilded Age.’ -- Ruchir Sharma, author of The Rise and Fall of Nations‘A lucid, detailed and at times epic account of the new India… A must-read for all those interested in the political and economic destiny of the subcontinent.’ -- Robert D. Kaplan, author of Monsoon and The Return of Marco Polo’s World‘A fascinating look into the world of the Indian business elite…shedding considerable light on whether the country will sustain the miracle that is the Indian democracy or go the way of populism and authoritarianism as so many others have.’ -- Dani Rodrik, Professor of International Political Economy, Harvard University, and author of The Globalization Paradox‘James Crabtree distinguished himself as the most insightful journalist writing for the Financial Times from India. It is not surprising therefore that he has now written a book that offers a splendid overview of the issues that have been raised concerning India’s spectacular growth since the reforms began in 1991. It is bound to become a classic.’ -- Jagdish Bhagwati, author of In Defense of Globalization‘In this eye-opening rumination on wealth, power, and those who seek both…Crabtree brings a reporter’s precision and flair to his story… An inside look into the corridors of power, this is an invaluable commentary on Indian democracy and the forces that threaten it.’ * Publishers Weekly, starred review *‘A wonderful book! It artfully weaves together lively stories of India’s billionaires while retaining a balanced perspective on the big picture of the rise of India. It is not easy to write contemporary history but Crabtree manages to get to the heart of the matter – the problem of India’s state capacity and the need to reform the institutions of governance.’ -- Gurcharan Das, author of India Unbound and The Difficulty of Being Good‘Who are the Indian nouveau riche and what do they want? James Crabtree’s The Billionaire Raj will prove the defining work on these questions. Book SynopsisAccording to leading economist Ann Pettifor, one of the few people to predict the 2008 financial crisis, money is not a commodity but a promise. This radical reconsideration of the power of money means that we can reimagine the way the economy works. The Production of Money also examines popular alternative debates on, and innovations in, money, such as "green QE" and "helicopter money." She sets out the possibility of linking the money in our pockets (or on our smartphones) to the improvements we want to see in the world around us.Trade ReviewAnn Pettifor was always the ideal author of a book that shatters the fantasy of apolitical money and the toxic myth that monetary policy must remain a democracy-free zone. This book is now a reality -- Yanis VaroufakisPettifor has a splendidly clear vision, both of money creation and of the role of banks. There is a great deal to applaud here, including her critique of mainstream economic models, which continue to ignore money and banking or, alternatively, get that horribly wrong -- Charles Goodhart, Emeritus Professor, London School of EconomicsAnn deserves a lot of credit because she was trying to highlight these issues many, many years ago, and unfortunately, there weren't enough people who were trying to map the system, model it, and then above all else, modify it. We have to map the financial system and then work out how to change it. -- Gillian Tett, author of The Silo EffectOur livelihoods and ecosystem are deeply affected by the world of money production and finance. But it's a world largely hidden from us by vested interests. In language we can all understand, Ann Pettifor explains the issues and the debates around money, shadow banking, QE and 'helicopter money.' A must-read. -- Caroline Lucas, Co-Leader of The Green Party of England and WalesCoolly authoritative, soberly trenchant, unexpectedly compelling, Ann Pettifor's book is vital in both senses, important and full of life. -- Zoe Williams * Guardian *Pettifor's new book aims to elucidate the nature of money, the better to help women advocate for their needs * Vogue US *Pettifor has a gift for breaking down complex economic ideas into notions that feel almost intuitive. If her book cannot hope to wholly democratize money, it could certainly help democratize the understanding of it, which Pettifor sees as the first step to encouraging public demands for a fairer system. * Bookforum *Enlightening. Emerald Publishing Limited Realignment, Region, and Race: Presidential

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThe Trump presidency may well be the first phase of a new American political alignment deeply rooted in identity politics. Now more than ever, it seems especially important to understand how leaders compete to engage different human motivations—how presidents, presidential candidates, and other political leaders appeal to potential followers’ needs for economic well-being, safety, self-esteem, and a sense of significance. It is time to come to terms with the roles of race and region in US political history. In Realignment, Region, and Race, George R. Goethals addresses this challenge head-on, exploring the place of racial dynamics in American politics from Abraham Lincoln to Donald Trump. He integrates psychology and historical understandings of presidential leadership and politics to explain the way the politics of racial justice and needs for positive social identity have led to different regions in the United States changing party affiliation. He describes the realignment by region of the two major political parties in the United States, the Democrats and Republicans, between the Civil War and the present day, and he considers how for over a century and a half the two parties have offered different social identities, often related to race, that appeal to powerful motives for self-esteem and significance. Goethals’s findings uncover deep contexts for understanding how current political leaders engage experiences and attitudes towards African Americans, Hispanic Americans, and Asian Americans in order to tell particular stories about American and regional identities. Realignment, Region, and Race is essential reading for students of politics, history, and psychology, and it is of keen interest to anyone concerned with the power that identity politics has taken on in recent American elections.Trade ReviewGoethals argues that racial dynamics is responsible for how and why the North and South switched political parties between Abraham Lincoln's election in 1860 and George W. Book SynopsisIn 1997, Hong Kong became a special administrative region of China under the “one country, two systems” framework. In this new edition, Tim Summers brings his analysis of the politics of Hong Kong fully up to date and discusses the ramifications for the city of the mass demonstrations of 2019–20 and the city’s intensifying confrontational politics that have culminated in China’s new national security law for Hong Kong. In the process, Hong Kong has lost the sweet spot it occupied for four decades in a world of intensifying economic globalization and decent US–China relations, all the more so after Covid-19. Instead it finds itself at the frontline of US–China strategic rivalry. Summers explores how the city’s future will be shaped by the interaction of these global tensions with Hong Kong’s polarized local politics and its relationship with Beijing.Trade ReviewThis readable overview of twenty-first-century Hong Kong by Summers, a former British diplomat and resident commentator in the city, succinctly reviews the major events of globalization that have impacted the city, shaped by its changing relations with China and the rest of the world. -- ChoiceA comprehensive guide for those interested in a changing Hong Kong and the wider set of political and economic developments in China and the rest of the world… convincingly spells out the situation in Hong Kong from the handover to mid-2020 and attempts to go beyond the dominant “Beijing vis-à-vis Hong Kong” framework in Hong Kong studies. -- China PerspectivesSummers's work provides a ground-breaking re-assessment of modern Hong Kong, from an observer with decades of experience in the region. -- Biblio-FiendTable of ContentsPreface to the second editionIntroduction1. Book SynopsisMatters of ideology and security have become deeply entwined in China’s economic and business environment. The context is more politicized, more uncertain. At the heart of Xiconomics is the Dual Circulation Strategy, which marks out clear dividing lines between China’s domestic economy and the rest of the world. It sets out how China seeks to manage the links between the two just when western countries are also focusing on decoupling and "friendshoring". In order to prosper, business leaders and policy-makers need to understand these new international dynamics. In this concise and incisive analysis, Andrew Cainey and Christiane Prange explain what is happening in China and how this affects its relations with other countries. They identify what foreign companies need to do, how strategies need to change, and what this all means for managing the China business as part of a global portfolio, under a range of geopolitical scenarios.Trade ReviewThe authors provide a succinct picture of what it means to do business in China today. They provide an in-depth analysis of the intertwined historical, political and economic environment that managers must face up to and highlight the strategy options open to multinational companies. A must-read for everyone who seeks a nuanced understanding of China’s multifaceted business landscape beyond simplistic business headlines. -- Joerg Storm, Global Head IT Infrastructure, Mercedes Benz Mobility, StuttgartThis book is an essential immediate read for all senior business leaders with a responsibility for doing business inside China, or with the potential to encounter Chinese influenced businesses elsewhere. The authors deconstruct Xiconomics and their inside track enables them to decode and make Xiconomics accessible to those with a business interest in the potentially enormous benefits and significant risks associated with engaging with China. -- Wilf Blackburn, former CEO, Allianz China LifeAn invaluable guide for business people and policy makers facing the challenge of mapping out strategies for productive engagement with China going forward. -- Peter Williamson, Judge Business School, University of CambridgeXiconomics should be essential reading for anyone grappling with understanding, and adjusting to, the profound changes that have occurred to China’s business environment in Xi’s era. -- Xin Sun, King’s College LondonNow more than ever, business success in China means both understanding the broader social, political and historical context, and dealing with uncertainty. Drawing on their extensive experience, the authors describe how China is evolving and then lay out the strategic options and capabilities that companies need to succeed. 1 in stock

Book SynopsisThe GCC is a major player in the post-2011 reordering of the Middle East. Despite the rise in prominence of individual Gulf states - especially Kuwait, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates - and the growth of the GCC as a collective entity, surprisingly little attention has been paid to the actual mechanics of policy-making in the region. This book analyses the vital role that institutions are coming to play in shaping policy in the Gulf Arab states. The research coincides with two key developments that have given institutions new importance in the policy process: the emergence of a new generation of leaders in the Gulf, and the era of low oil prices. Both developments, along with dramatic demographic change, have compelled state and citizens to re-evaluate the nature of the social contract that binds them together. Contributors assess the changing relationship between state and citizen and evaluate the role that formal and informal institutions play in mediating such change and informing policy. The book shows how academic, social and economic institutions are responding to the increasingly complex process of decision-making, where citizens demand better services and further empowerment, and states are obliged to seek wider counsel, although wanting to retain ultimate authority. With contributions from both academics and practitioners, this book will be highly relevant for researchers and policymakers alike.Table of ContentsIntroduction and Overview Mark C. • Iconomy: Towards a Political Economy of Images

Anthem Press Iconomy: Towards a Political Economy of Images

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisIconomy: Towards a Political Economy of Images argues that imagery of all kinds has become a definitive force in the shaping of contemporary life. While immersed in public politics and private imaginaries, such imagery also operates according to its own logic, potentialities, and limitations. This book explores viral imagery—the iconopolitics—of the pandemic, U.S. Presidents Trump and Biden, Black Lives Matter, as well as the rise of a “black aesthetic” in white artworlds. Having arrived at the term “iconomy” in the years just prior to 9/11, and tracking its growing relevance since then, Smith argues that its study does not require a discipline serving nation states and globalizing capitalism but, instead, a deconstructive interdiscipline that contributes to the politics of planetary world-making. Trade Review“A well documented and welcome history of the genesis of a new concept: iconomy.” – Peter Szendy, David Herlihy University Professor of Comparative Literature and the Humanities, Brown University, and author of The Supermarket of Images.“Charting the image economy’s historical and current coordinates with model perspicuity, Smith reveals timely political insights.” – T. J. Demos, Patricia and Rowland Rebele Endowed Chair in Art History, UC Santa Cruz, and author of Beyond the World’s End: Arts of Living at the Crossing. “Unparalleled historian and theoretician of the visual articulations of contemporaneity, Terry Smith provides an erudite and highly useful conceptual framework and historical background for understanding and criticizing the economies that images inescapably form part of in today's cultures. Iconomy is a must-read for anyone who wants to engage critically with contemporary regimes of imagery.” – Jacob Lund, Associate Professor, Aesthetics and Culture, Aarhus University, author of The Changing Constitution of the Present.“Iconomy gathers forceful evidence that images are indeed capital today. In Post-Fordist societies, as Terry Smith makes clear in this important book, the exposure value of images inaugurates a new political economy we are still struggling to understand : an eye-conomy” – Professor Emmanuel Alloa, University of Freiburg, Faculty of Philosophy, Fribourg.Smith's Iconomy is unabashedly about the present: it tracks the author's shifting perception about the political role of circulating images in contemporary society over the course of the coronavirus pandemic, the Donald Trump presidency, and the Black Lives Matter movement. Part 1, comprising six brief, roughly chronological chapters, delves into the history, theory, and politics of the image as a form of social currency, surveying ideas proffered by thinkers such as Plato; the iconodules and iconoclasts of Byzantium; and Marx, Benjamin, and Debord. Weighing the value of an amorphous definition of iconomy—a coinage created by theoreticians and marketers alike in recent decades—Smith (Univ. of Pittsburgh) acknowledges that the term is indicative of the essential unknowability and immeasurability of the digital world. The eight chapters in part 2 depart from a genealogy of the image to address the power of digital and video images in the contemporary world. In grappling with the role of image regimes in the wake of the pandemic, the murder of George Floyd, the January 6th Capitol riots, and "Trumpmania," Smith shifts toward an activist methodology. Though new media concepts such as AI, memes, and NFTs are not discussed in depth, the book's juxtaposition of aesthetic theory with critical perspectives on contemporaneity is refreshing —A. Book SynopsisThis edited collection details and analyses the dramatic changes that the international political economy of energy has undergone in the past decade. This change began with the increasing assertiveness of Russia when the oil price rose above the $100 mark in 2008. This, combined with the rise of shale oil and gas, made the USA all but self-sufficient in terms of fossil fuels. The collapse of the oil price in 2014-15, Saudi Arabia’s new strategy of defending its market share and the increasingly tense and controversial relationship between the West and Russia all worked to further strengthen the geopolitical dimension of energy in Europe. The global result is a world in which geopolitics play a bigger part than ever before; the central question the authors of this volume grapple with is how the EU – and European small states – can deal with this.Chapter 4 of this book is available open access under a CC BY 4.0 license at link.springer.comTable of ContentsChapter 1: Introduction: The Changing (Geo)Politics of Energy in Europe.- Part I: Inside–Out: Projecting EU Rules and Ideas.- Chapter 2: Regulatory Power or Market Power Europe? Book SynopsisThis title explains the causes of the financial crisis and the economic reforms that were created subsequently through a Foucauldian philosophical lens. The author sets out the approaches established by Foucault – namely governmentality, biopolitics and disciplinary mechanisms – explaining how these influenced the shift of production from a local to a global level, alongside a shift towards financialisation. Glenn applies Foucauldian principles to aid understanding of the self-corrective mechanisms applied to the financial system, and the interpellative processes that led to the emergence of a new mode of subjectification. Concurrently, this title examines the retreat of the state from the financial sphere. This shift, the author posits, did not mean the complete absence of governance; rather governance became more concerned with ensuring that financial behaviour was contained within certain limits. Book SynopsisExplaining the determinants of China and India’s development cooperation in Africa cannot be achieved in simple terms. After collecting over 1000 development cooperation projects by China and India in Africa using AidData, this book applies the method of qualitative comparative analysis (QCA) to understand the motives behind their development cooperation. Mthembu posits that neither China nor India were solely motivated by one causal factor, whether strategic, economic or humanitarian interests or the size of their diaspora in Africa. China and India are driven by multiple and conjunctural factors in providing more development cooperation to some countries than others on the African continent. Only when some of these respective causal factors are combined is it evident that both countries disbursed high levels of development cooperation to some African countries.Table of ContentsChapter 1. Book SynopsisThomas Robert Malthus (1766-1834) was a leading figure in the British classical school of economics, best-known for extending the insights of Adam Smith at a time of revolutionary improvements in agriculture and industry. This book explores the way in which he accounted for the tendency to overpopulation, the exhaustion of arable land and the deficiency of effective demand.Malthus relied on historical and empirical evidence in the spirit of Bacon and Hume, but also backed up his data with a priori hypotheses that link him to his contemporary, David Ricardo. Malthus was strongly in favour of free trade, the minimal State, the gold standard and the abolition of poverty relief. Always a pragmatist, however, he was just as much in favour of public education, contra-cyclical public works and a safety net of tariffs and bounties to encourage national self-sufficiency with regard to food. He was both an economist and a clergyman and saw the two roles as interconnected. Malthus believed that a benevolent Deity had created vice and misery in order to shake human beings out of their natural indolence that would otherwise have condemned them to still greater distress. This title provides a clear and comprehensive examination of Malthus’s economic and social thought. Book SynopsisThis book discusses local area planning in the Lombardy region of Italy. The book provides valuable insights about the development of local welfare systems and the territorial organization of social services through the analysis of the evolution of the Local Area Plan, which lies at the intersection of sub regional governance and of social services delivery models. Using Lombardy as a case study, this brief analyzes the structural conditions influencing the establishment of Local Area Plans, their effect on inter-municipal cooperation, and the need for possible reforms. The book is organized as follows: the first chapter presents a reconstruction of the national and regional framework, analyzing the structure of ties and opportunities within which Local Area Plans are called to act. The second chapter provides a review of the extant literature on Local Area Plans and introduces the theoretical framework used by the volume. The third chapter details legislation introduced in Lombardy to reform the governance structure of Local Area Plans by supporting a process of reorganization and aggregation. The fourth chapter presents some cases of Local Area Plan aggregation. The final chapter presents the conclusion and some brief considerations about the future of social planning. Book SynopsisThis book discusses to what extent the precautionary approach to fisheries management is reflected in the MSC Fisheries Standard and in the certification of four clusters of fisheries in polar waters. Certification according to private sustainability standards (ecolabelling) has become an important addition to public fisheries management in recent years. The major global ecolabel in terms of comprehensiveness and coverage is the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) Fisheries Standard. Becoming and remaining certified requires continuous behavioural adaptation from fisheries through a fine-meshed system of improvement conditions attached to certification. Focus is on how certification has influenced fisher behaviour and state practice. In the Southern Ocean krill and toothfish fisheries, MSC certification has generated new scientific knowledge about the stocks. In the Barents Sea cod and haddock fisheries, fishing companies have voluntarily adapted their behaviour to reduce the fishery’s impacts on endangered, threatened and protected species and bottom habitats. In the local lumpfish fisheries in Greenland, Iceland and Norway, measures have been introduced to reduce the effects on seabirds and marine mammals. In the Northeast Atlantic mackerel fisheries, impacts have been more modest. Private certification is no panacea, but it seems to have found a niche as a supplement to national legislation and international agreements. Table of Contents1. Introduction2. 15 in stock

Book SynopsisPlaced at the intersection among philosophy, geography, and computer science, the domain of investigation of applied ontology of geography ranges from making explicit assumptions and commitments of geography as a discipline, to the theoretical and technical needs of geographical/IT tools, such as GIS and geo-ontologies. Such a domain of investigation represents the central topic of discussion of this book, which intends: 1) to provide an overview of the mutual interactions among the disciplines encompassed in the domain; 2) to discuss notions such as spatial representation, boundaries, and geographical entities that constitute the main focus of the (philosophical) ontology of geography; 3) to propose a geographical classification of geo-ontologies in response to their increasing diffusion within the contemporary debate, as well as to show what ontological categories best systematize their contents. The second edition of the book differs from the first one as it offers a broader analysis of the (philosophical) ontology of geography: an analysis that is no more limited to the theoretical need of geo-ontologies.Table of ContentsIntroductionPart I. Significantly updated for the fourth edition, the text provides an understanding of the global economy in the wake of the COVID crisis, discussing topics such as pandemic related supply and demand-side shocks, the role of Modern Monetary Theory (MMT) in financing COVID rescue plans, the effect of the US, India, Eurozone and China’s post-COVID economies on emerging and transitioning economies, and the resurgence of inflation. This edition includes deeper coverage on the issue of budget deficit sustainability and on trade wars, especially in a global context, and revisits the life cycles of speculative asset price (SAP) bubbles, especially in the housing markets and in SPACs. The fourth edition contains several brand-new cases and media articles that are carefully positioned to relate explicitly to theory, and to look ahead to and preempt global macro situations and polices in the years to come. • Questioning the Entrepreneurial State: Status-quo, Pitfalls, and the Need for Credible Innovation Policy

Springer Nature Switzerland AG Questioning the Entrepreneurial State: Status-quo, Pitfalls, and the Need for Credible Innovation Policy

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThe 2008 financial crisis and the COVID-19 pandemic have made the authorities to increasingly turn inward and use ethnocentrism, protectionism, and top-down approaches to guide policy on trade, competition, and industrial development. The continuing aftereffects of such policies range from the rise and seeming success of authoritarian states, rise of populist and protectionist trends, and evolving academic agendas inspiring the reemergence of top-down industrial policies across the world. This open access edited volume contains contributions from over 30 scholars with expertise in economics, innovation, management, and economic history. The chapters offer unique theoretical and empirical contributions discussing topics such as how industrial policies affect risk, incentives, and information for investments. They also address the policy perspectives on new technologies such as AI and its implications for market entry, the role for independent entrepreneurship in increasingly regulated markets, and whether governments should focus on market interventions or institutional capacity-building. Questioning the Entrepreneurial State initiates a much sought-after debate on the notion of an Entrepreneurial State. It discusses the dangers of top-down approaches to industrial policy, examines lessons from such approaches for future policy design, and calls attention to the progress of open and contestable markets in a sound economy and society. “Creative destruction, innovation and entrepreneurship are at the core of economic growth. The government has a clear role, to provide the basic fabric of a dynamic society, but industrial policy and state-owned companies are the boulevard of broken dreams and unrealized visions. This important message is convincingly stated in Questioning the Entrepreneurial State.” Anders Borg, former Minister of Finance, Sweden “Misreading the dynamism of American entrepreneurship, European intellectuals and policy makers have embraced a dangerous fantasy: catching up requires constructing an entrepreneurial state. This book provides a vital antidote: The entrepreneur comes first: The state may support. It cannot lead.”Amar Bhidé, Thomas Schmidheiny Professor of International Business, Tufts University “This important new book subjects the emergence of the entrepreneurial state, which reflects a shift in the locus of entrepreneurship from the individual to the public sector, to the scrutiny of rigorous analysis. The resulting concerns, flaws and biases inherent in the entrepreneurial state exposed are both alarming and sobering. The skill and scholarly craftsmanship brought to bear in this crucial analysis is evident throughout the book, along with the even, but ultimately consequential thinking of the authors. A must read for researchers and thought leaders in business and policy." David Audtretsch, Distinguished Professor, Ameritech Chair of Economic Development, Indiana UniversityTrade Review“All three books provide important guideposts for organizing collective effort to develop the kinds of technologies needed to address the most important global problems of the twenty-first century. The academic credentials and scholarly perspectives of the contributors infuse Wennberg and Sandstro¨m’s edited volume with an analytical tone and comparative institutional lens that are very welcome in the conversation regarding how public policymakers should identify opportunities for encouraging innovation.” (Anita M. McGahan, Administrative Science Quarterly, October 31, 2023)“The book is written for both academics and policymakers, and it is written clearly without an assumption that readers possess a strong foundation of economic training. … Questioning the Entrepreneurial State is an excellent edited volume comprising thought provoking concerns about the viability of an entrepreneurial state. … After reading this edited volume, readers will learn not just the entrepreneurial state and criticisms, but will learn about a variety of topics on institutions, ecosystems, sustainability, and politics related to entrepreneurship and innovation.” (Christopher John Boudreaux, Journal of Evolutionary Economics, Vol. 32, 2022)Table of ContentsPart I: Introductory Chapter.- Introduction.- Part II: The Entrepreneurial State: Theoretical Perspectives.- The Entrepreneurial State and the Platform Economy.- An Effectual Analysis of Markets and States.- The Entrepreneurial State: An Ownership Competence Perspective.- Innovation Without Entrepreneurship: The Pipe Dream of Mission-Oriented Innovation Policy.- Part III: The Entrepreneurial State, Entrepreneurial Universities, and Startups.- Building Local Innovation Support Systems: Theory and Practice.- Reducing Higher Education Bureaucracy and Reclaiming the Entrepreneurial University.- Cultural Ideals in the Entrepreneurship Industry.- Evaluating Evaluations of Innovation Policy: Exploring Reliability, Methods, and Conflicts of Interest.- Do Targeted R&D Grants toward SMEs Increase Employment and Demand for High Human Capital Workers?.- Part IV: The Entrepreneurial State and Sustainability Transitions.- Third-Generation Innovation Policy: System Transformation or Reinforcing Business as Usual?.- Less from More: China Built Wind Power, but Gained Little Electricity.- The Failures of the Entrepreneurial State: Subsidies to Renewable Energies in Europe.- Directionality in Innovation Policy and the Ongoing Failure of Green Deals: Evidence from Biogas, Bio-ethanol, and Fossil-Free Steel.- Part V: From the Entrepreneurial State Towards Evidence-Based Innovation Policy.- Policy Instruments for High-Growth Enterprises.- Public-Steering and Private-Performing Sectors: Success and Failures in the Swedish Finance, Telecoms, and City Planning Sectors.- The Digital Platform Economy and the Entrepreneurial State: A European Dilemma.- Collaborative Innovation Blocs and Mission-Oriented Innovation Policy: An Ecosystem Perspective.

  • Understanding Economic Transitions: Plan and Market Under the New Globalization

Springer International Publishing AG Understanding Economic Transitions: Plan and Market Under the New Globalization

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisUnderstanding Economic Transitions explains the genesis, operation, and transformation of the centrally-planned socialist economy, which figured prominently in the lives of billions of people in twentieth-century Europe and Asia. Just as importantly, the centrally-planned socialist economy’s demise coincided with the shift from nonindustrial to industrial economy (and de-industrialization in some cases) and the onset of ICT-driven globalization. Using theory, empirics, and selected country case studies, this book teases out the enduring lessons from the myriad and fraught pathways of transition from socialism to capitalism. Understanding Economic Transitions provides a self-contained, comprehensive, and authoritative treatment of modern economic systems. This textbook has four features of particular use to students: (i) Using the prism of comparative institutionalism, it melds theory and evidence to revisit the varieties of planned and market-driven systems today; (ii) It takes economic planning seriously in theory and practice (central, cooperative, or indicative) as the most prominent marker of the ever-changing boundaries between state and market; (iii) It focuses on the dynamics of systemic transition in formerly socialist countries by contextualizing them in terms of the whence (central planning), the how (modalities of transition), and the whither (illiberal or liberal capitalism) of politico-economic transformation; and (iv) It examines the profound impact on these structural processes of the post-1990 phase of economic globalization. With its clear, comprehensive content and useful pedagogical features, this textbook will prepare students to understand how economies transition and why.Table of ContentsPART ONE: THEORIES OF COMPARATIVE ECONOMICS.- 1.
