Pluto Press Moving Against the System
Book SynopsisA revolutionary collection of black radical thought from a historic event in 1968.Trade Review'The Congress of Black Writers marks one of the most important gatherings of radical intellectuals in the 20th century... Where else can you find the likes of C.L.R. James, Walter Rodney, Richard B. Moore, James Forman, Stokely Carmichael, Robert Hill and others, talking revolution to an engaged and sometimes combative crowd? I couldn't put the book down' -- Robin D. G. Kelley, author of 'Freedom Dreams: The Black Radical Imagination''Moving Against The System is a carefully constructed montage of the leadership , dynamics, and substance of what became an international "Movement". It is a revelatory portrait of the past that is no less revealing of the political dynamics and potential of today's "Black Live Matter", "#MeToo", and other activist efforts . A must read' -- Harry Edwards, Prof. Emeritus, Univ. of California, Berkeley; Consultant: NFL, NBA'Austin provides a wonderful contextual and critical Introduction making the contributions of CLR James, Robert Hill, Walter Rodney, James Forman, Stokely Carmichael and many others not only relevant to but also very much alive for contemporary movement theory and practice. A must read for all those concerned with anti-racist revolutionary social transformation today' -- Gary Kinsman, gay liberation and anti-capitalist activist, co-author of 'The Canadian War on Queers: National Security as Sexual Regulation''Moving Against the System powerfully reminds us of the depth and breadth of the Black radical tradition and its profound, enduring contributions to anti-imperialist thought and action. At a time when such acute insights are badly needed, Austin suggests critical ways to engage with these ideas and histories, to educate and inform today’s struggles to change the system' -- Aziz Choudry, Canada Research Chair in Social Movement Learning and Knowledge Production, McGill University'It is simply extraordinary to read, fifty years later, this collection. Not only has David Austin expertly introduced the interventions of some of the 20th century's most important intellectuals and militants, these texts remind us of a time when the struggles against racism, capitalism, and imperialism converged on a global scale and advanced a project for liberation... a project which remains central and necessary today' -- Asad Haider, author of 'Mistaken Identity: Race and Class in the Age of Trump''This remarkable collections gathers electric essays from a critical site of the making of a 'global 1968'. Masterfully introduced, it includes the work of leading pan-African thinkers and freedom fighters gathered at the most important North American intellectual event of that critical year. The histories and dilemmas that they dissect are ones with which we still very much live' -- David Roediger, author of 'Class, Race, and Marxism''This collection is a treasure chest of Canadian, Caribbean, and African diasporic history. And David Austin is a remarkable archivist, curator, detective and analyst of this decisive moment' -- Karen Dubinsky, Professor, Global Development Studies and History Queen's University'David Austin has done a tremendous service by bringing together this brilliant and inspiring collection from the Congress of Black Writers... With white supremacy on the rise once again, the insights contained here provide a vital guide to the waging of revolutionary anti-racist praxis on a global scale' -- Sunera Thobani, Department of Asian Studies, University of British Columbia; author of 'Exalted Subjects: Studies in the Making of Race and Nation in Canada''Reading Moving Against the System as an activist and organiser is to experience time folding in on itself ... much of our struggles today are informed in part by some of the men whose speeches and arguments appear here ... the documentation of this incredibly important Congress in an accessible book format is sure to remain relevant and instructive for years to come' -- Sandra Hudson, co-founder of Black Lives Matter - Toronto'With the groundbreaking publication of key selections from the 1968 Congress of Black Writers and David Austin's in-depth explanation of the gathering's context and significance 'Moving Against the System' speaks to us across five decades with great eloquence and power' -- Max Elbaum, author of 'Revolution in the Air: Sixties Radicals Turn to Lenin, Mao and Che'Table of ContentsAcknowledgements Introduction: The Dialect of Liberation: The Congress of Black Writers at 50 and Beyond - David Austin 1. Pluto Press The Global Police State
Book SynopsisA critical look at the terrifying ways the police are used to control 'surplus' populations worldwide.Trade Review'Every socialist should read this book' -- Neil Faulkner, historian and archaeologist'A field guide to repression in the 21st century, with its state control and new forms of surveillance and technological manipulation.' -- Christopher McMichael, New Frame'Robinson gives powerful theoretical coherence to everyone's fear that the fascism is being reborn, but adds the important twist that repression itself has grown into an essential engine of accumulation' -- Mike Davis, author of 'Planet of Slums' and co-author of 'Set the Night on Fire: Los Angeles in the Sixties''For the last twenty years, William Robinson has been one of the most important analysts of global capitalism and the dynamics of globalization. In this new work, Robinson turns his attention to the emergence of a 21st century "global police state" that has developed as a corollary to growing inequality, climate collapse, and intensifying migration movements of the dispossessed. As Robinson warns, with great deprivation comes great repression, policing and potentially war. Robinson writes pointedly and with urgency for a broad audience with an interest in mobilizing for a just world' -- Keeanga-Yamahtta Taylor, Professor of African American Studies at Princeton University and author of 'From #BlackLives Matter to Black Liberation''Karl Marx aspired to a world in which our animal needs would be satisfied and our human needs could be addressed. It is a realistic possibility now, as William Robinson outlines – or the alternative that is taking shape before our eyes: a 'global police state' controlled by narrowly concentrated capital with 'surplus humanity' left to survive somehow on its own. The choice is in our hands. There could hardly be a more compelling one' -- Noam Chomsky, Institute Professor Emeritus at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and author of 'Who Rules the World?'‘A crucial reflection on power, capitalism and war globally … The Global Police State provides an accessible and compact overview of repression and corporate expansion into policing and surveillance.’ -- ‘ROAR’Table of ContentsA Brief Acknowledgment of Collective Authorship List of Acronyms Introduction: “George Orwell Got It Wrong” 1. University of Nebraska Press Life of the Indigenous Mind
Book Synopsis2019 Choice Outstanding Academic Title In Life of the Indigenous MindDavid Martínez examines the early activism, life, and writings of Vine Deloria Jr. (1933–2005), the most influential Indigenous activist and writer of the twentieth century and one of the intellectual architects of the Red Power movement. An experienced activist, administrator, and political analyst, Deloria was motivated to activism and writing by his work as executive director of the National Congress of American Indians, and he came to view discourse on tribal self-determination as the most important objective for making a viable future for tribes. In this work of both intellectual and activist history, Martínez assesses the early life and legacy of Deloria’s “Red Power Tetralogy,” his most powerful and polemical works: Custer Died for Your Sins (1969), We Talk, You Listen (1970), God Is Red (1973), and Behind tTrade Review"Drawing on the activist-intellectual's personal papers and less well-known writings from the period, Life of the Indigenous Mind is more than mere commentary. Moreover, the book's critical edge distinguishes it from prior scholarship that erred toward hagiography. Overall, it is a long-overdue addition to the existing literature on Vine Deloria, Jr., and on Red Power more generally."—John H. Cable, American Indian Quarterly“The most substantial and important consideration of Deloria’s work to date and deserves a place on any comprehensive American Indian studies shelf.”—Akim Reinhardt, South Dakota History"Martínez has produced a rich and rewarding book. He is balanced in his critiques of Deloria's writings and careful to contextualize Deloria's political motives for self-determination."—Gregory D. Smithers, Native American and Indigenous Studies“An affecting portrait of one of America’s most influential Indigenous rights activists.”—C. T. Vecsey, Choice"Life of the Indigenous Mind is an asset for instructors of American Indian studies. Martínez paints Deloria as a wise elder of the Red Power movement, even in his youth, a portrait that bolsters the argument that he was the intellectual leader American Indians needed at a unique moment in history."—April M. Bond, American Indian Culture and Research Journal“As David Martínez observes, the Indigenous mind is the Indigenous community’s most potent weapon against colonialism. This powerful statement triggers a challenging responsibility: to identify the types of ideas that should inform the efforts of Indigenous intellectuals. Martínez charts a framework for future intersectional analysis, providing an important contribution to the growth of American Indian intellectualism. This book offers a magnificent appraisal of Vine Deloria Jr.’s legacy and the power of critical thought.”—Rebecca Tsosie, Regents’ Professor of Law at the University of Arizona and faculty co-chair of the Indigenous Peoples Law and Policy Program at the James E. Rogers College of Law“David Martínez transcends hagiography in this complex analysis of four key early works by Vine Deloria Jr. This fascinating book takes a deep dive into Deloria’s thinking. Martínez does an admirable job of both placing these works in the historical context of turbulent changes in Indian affairs in the United States and illuminating Deloria’s intellectual acumen as he challenged federal bureaucrats, academia, the public at large, and, perhaps most significantly, Indian Country to rethink the place of American Indians in the United States.”—David R. Columbia Books on Architecture and the City Nights of the Dispossessed – Riots Unbound
Book SynopsisRiots are extraordinary events that have been recurring with increasing frequency and occupy a highly controversial space in the political imagination. Despite their often negative portrayals, it is undeniable that riots have played a pivotal role in the confrontation between authority and dissent. Recently, with the deepening crises of capitalism, racial violence, and communal tension, an “age of riots” has powerfully begun. As master fictions of the sovereign nation-state implode, and the hegemonic silencing of the dispossessed reveals the cracks in governability, Nights of the Dispossessed: Riots Unbound brings together artistic works, political texts, critical urban analyses, and research projects from across the world in an endeavor to “sense,” chronicle, and think through recent riots and uprisings—evoking a phenomenology of the multitude and surplus population. With contributions from Asef Bayat, Joshua Clover, Vaginal Davis, Keller Easterling, Zena Edwards, Nadine El-Enany, Dilip Parameshwar Gaonkar, Gauri Gill, Natasha Ginwala, Natascha Sadr Haghighian, Louis Henderson, Satch Hoyt, Hamid Khan, Gal Kirn, Josh Kun, Léopold Lambert, Margit Mayer, Vivek Narayanan, Ai Ogawa, Oana Pârvan, Elizabeth A. C Hurst & Co Publishers Ltd Navalny: Putin's Nemesis, Russia's Future?
Book SynopsisA Foreign Affairs Best Book of 2022 A Financial Times Politics Book of the Year 2021 A fascinating account of Russia’s famous dissident and the politics he embodies. Who is Alexei Navalny? Poisoned in August 2020 and transported to Germany for treatment, the politician returned to Russia in January 2021 in the full glare of the world media. His immediate detention at passport control set the stage for an explosive showdown with Vladimir Putin. But Navalny means very different things to different people. To some, he is a democratic hero. To others, he is betraying the Motherland. To others still, he is a dangerous nationalist. This book explores the many dimensions of Navalny’s political life, from his pioneering anti-corruption investigations to his ideas and leadership of a political movement. It also looks at how his activities and the Kremlin’s strategies have shaped one another. Navalny makes sense of this divisive character, revealing the contradictions of a man who is the second most important political figure in Russia—even when behind bars. In order to understand modern Russia, you need to understand Alexei Navalny. This updated version includes new material following Russia's February 2022 invasion of Ukraine.Trade Review'Anyone reading [Navalny] from the safety and comfort of Britain will be daunted, humbled — and outraged.' -- Edward Lucas, The Times'At a moment when Alexei Navalny has emerged as a global figure in his fight from captivity for Russian democracy, Jan Matti Dollbaum, Morvan Lallouet, and Ben Noble have provided the world with a tremendous service by writing the first comprehensive account of the country’s most important opposition leader. Filled with facts and devoid of hyperbole, the book offers a complete portrayal of Navalny, as an anti-corruption activist, politician, and protestor. Navalny: Putin’s Nemesis, Russia’s Future? is a must read for anyone who wants to learn what Alexei Navalny actually does and believes, and what he might do to shape Russia’s future.' -- Michael McFaul, author of 'From Cold War to Hot Peace: An American Ambassador in Putin’s Russia'

Oxford University Press Inc A Change is Gonna Come
Book SynopsisTrade ReviewAn accomplished social scientist, writer, and award-winning teacher, Harrison gives concrete points on how to have difficult talks, leaving behind the drama of Twitter feuding, name-calling, and internet bullying that can make any sort of discussion with "the other side" seem impossible. * Savy Janssen, Los Angeles Review of Books *We can't change everyone (racist uncles, Twitter bullies, unhinged presidents who double as Twitter bullies), but Brian F. Harrison teaches us how to persuade the persuadable. This is a book for people who want to change minds using techniques that work, which means there's no chapter celebrating the effectiveness of shaming, trolling, and other emotionally satisfying but largely counterproductive weaponry. This is a hopeful and humane book for people willing to have seemingly difficult conversations that might just change the world. * Benoit Denizet-Lewis, Emerson College *What a refreshingly pragmatic, optimistic book. A Change is Gonna Come is a humane text, grounded in useful data, and full of helpful practices that are at the core of good political science, and good political habits. I look forward to teaching this! * Renée Cramer, Drake University *LGBTQ people have made historic progress in record time thanks to the brave members of our community who not only came out, but engaged in honest, challenging conversations with those who were hostile toward our very existence. As Brian Harrison's book makes clear, it is those authentic, hard conversations that have changed people's minds and opened their hearts. The only way we will defend our progress and win true equity for all people is to take Brian's advice and keep the lines of communication open. * Brian Richardson, LGBTQ advocate and Director, Lambda Legal Midwest Region *Brian Harrison has written a book that everyone — and I mean everyone — who cares about our current political morass should read. A Change is Gonna Come packages a wealth of social science research into a short, immensely readable, and incredibly smart book about how to have political conversations that matter. * Ellen Andersen, The University of Vermont *Table of ContentsChapter 1: How to Talk Politics like Grown-ups Chapter 2: The Virtue of Uncomfortable Conversations Chapter 3: How to Alienate Others Chapter 4: The Mechanics of Persuasion and the Impact of Information Chapter 5: Don't Know How I Feel About That Chapter 6: People Like Us Have Got to Stick Together Chapter 7: Change Is Hard but Not Impossible Notes References Index

Oxford University Press Sustainable Materialism
Book SynopsisA growing number of environmental groups focus on more sustainable practices in everyday life, from the development of new food systems, to community solar, to more sustainable fashion. No longer willing to take part in unsustainable practices and institutions, and not satisfied with either purely individualistic and consumer responses or standard political processes and movement tactics, many activists and groups are increasingly focusing on restructuring everyday practices of the circulation of the basic needs of everyday life. This work labels such action sustainable materialism, and examines the political and social motivations of activists and movement groups involved in this growing and expanding practice. The central argument is that these movements are motivated by four key factors: frustration with the lack of accomplishments on broader environmental policies, a desire for environmental and social justice, an active and material resistance to the power of traditional industries, and a form of sustainability that is attentive to the flow of materials through bodies, communities, economies, and environments. In addition to these motivations, these movements demonstrate such material action as political action, in contrast to existing critiques of new materialism as apolitical or post-political. Overall, sustainable materialism is explored as a set of movements with unique qualities, based in collective rather than individual action, a dedication to local and prefigurative politics, and a demand that sustainability be practiced in everyday life - starting with the materials and flows that provide food, power, clothing, and other basic needs.Table of ContentsPart One: Introducing Sustainable Materialism 1: An Introduction to Sustainable Materialism Part Two: Political Motivations for Sustainable Materialism 2: From Postmaterialism to Sustainable Materialism 3: Environmental and Social Justice in Sustainable Materialist Movements 4: Material Practice and Resistance to Power 5: Sustainability and the Politics of Materialist Action Part Three: Innovations and Conclusions 6: New Directions and Virtues in Sustainable Materialist Movements 7: Conclusion: From Sustainable Materialism to System Change About the Authors Bibliography Index

Book SynopsisThis is a history of 1968 written from a new perspective-that of center-right student activists in West Germany. Based on oral history interviews and new archival sources, it examines the ideas, experiences and repertoires of center-right students in this age of protest.Trade ReviewThere is little to quibble with in this extremely smart and original study. The attention to both the period of student activism and a longer history; the insightful use of oral history and interpretation of visual sources; the thoughtful renewed discussion of terms like "generation" and "political identity"; and the highly effective use of case studies in each chapter all contribute to the volume's success. * Belinda Davis, Central European History *This is a work of quite stupendous scholarship. * Rob Burns, German Politics and Society *There is little to quibble with in this extremely smart and original study. Oxford University Press Malcolm X at Oxford Union
Book SynopsisIn 1964 Malcolm X was invited to debate at the Oxford Union Society at Oxford University. The topic of debate that evening was the infamous phrase from Barry Goldwater''s 1964 Republican Convention speech:Extremism in the defense of liberty is no vice; moderation in the pursuit of justice is no virtue. At a time when Malcolm was traveling widely and advocating on behalf of blacks in America and other nations, his thirty minute speech at the Oxford Union stands out as one of the great addresses of the civil rights era. Delivered just months before his assassination, the speech followed a period in which Malcolm had traveled throughout Africa and much of the Muslim world. The journey broadened his political thought to encompass decolonization, the revolutions underway in the developing world, and the relationship between American blacks and non-white populations across the globe-including England. Facing off against debaters in one of world''s most elite institutions, he delivered a revoTrade ReviewMalcolm Xat teh Oxford Union provides in-depth analyses of the debate through its themes of extremism and moderation, justice and virtue ... The early chapters of Ambar's book, slowed down by lengthy quotations, occasionally lack brio; but Ambar's deft readings of Malcolm's use of humour, rhetorical devices and language begin to drive the narrative. He teases out the nuances of the speech, while highlighting its contemporary relevance. * Douglas Field, The Times Literary Supplement *It is no mean feat to engage the reader's attentin for 170 pages on a speech that is reproduced in a mere 11, and Ambar is to be congratulated on pulling it off [...] We still find ourselves asking just what, in the months leading up to his (Malcom X) assasination, did he stand for? The University of Chicago Press The Rise of the Masses
Book SynopsisAn insightful examination of how intersecting individual motivations and social structures mobilize spontaneous mass protests. Between 15 and 26 million Americans participated in protests surrounding the murders of George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, and others as part of the Black Lives Matter protests in 2020, which is only one of the most recent examples of an immense mobilization of citizens around a cause. In The Rise of the Masses, sociologist Benjamin Abrams addresses why and how people spontaneously protest, riot, and revolt en masse. While most uprisings of such a scale require tremendous resources and organizing, this book focuses on cases where people with no connection to organized movements take to the streets, largely of their own accord. Looking to the Arab Spring, Occupy Wall Street, and the Black Lives Uprising, as well as the historical case of the French Revolution, Abrams lays out a theory of how and why massive mobilizations arise without the large-scalTrade Review“Skillfully drawing on and synthesizing an impressive range of theoretical perspectives, Benjamin Abrams has fashioned a highly original theory of spontaneous mass mobilization. As if that weren’t enough, he goes on to make a compelling, empirically informed case for the application of his affinity-convergence theory to four iconic mass movements, ranging from the French Revolution to the George Floyd Protests of 2020. Anyone interested in the dynamics of spontaneous mass action will want to read this book.” -- Doug McAdam, Ray Lyman Wilbur Professor of Sociology, Stanford University“Drawing on four diverse cycles of contention. . . . Abrams shows how much of the process of mobilization can be explained as the product of affinities and convergence on the part of unorganized groups—the 'masses' in his title—while their failures can be explained as their inability to create viable and robust structures around their affinities. His book should be read by social movement specialists and by general readers concerned with the current waves of mass mobilization alike. While the book is based on immense reading and research, it is Abrams's deep thinking that I admire most. A very readable and engaging book." -- Sidney Tarrow, author of Power in Movement“Social movements and revolutions are enormously consequential. Yet, their confounding and elusive mysteries are not fully understood. How do they burst forth, who brings them into being, and why do they fail or succeed? Do they spring from spontaneity or organization? The Rise of the Masses squarely confronts these fundamental questions through careful analysis, copious evidence, and enthralling narratives of historic movements. In so doing, Abrams illuminates how these engines of social change operate. This book is a rich fount of knowledge that should be widely read.” -- Aldon Morris, author of The Origins of the Civil Rights Movement"This book will be important reading for those interested in explaining mobilization generally and delving into how we can better understand more spontaneous mobilizations. In addition, it would be of interest to any scholars or publics interested in the four core cases of analysis. I found the book compelling, beautifully written, and convincing." -- Catherine Corrigall-Brown * Social Forces *Table of ContentsIntroduction Part I: Theorizing Mobilization 1. Book SynopsisWho are the millions of people marching against the Trump administration? American Resistance traces activists from the streets back to the communities and congressional districts around the country where they live, work, and vote. Using innovative data, Dana R. Fisher analyzes how resistance groups have channeled outrage into activism.Trade ReviewAmerican Resistance is an important book, not only as a portrait of our moment but also as a challenge to traditional understandings of protest politics. Dana R. Fisher shows how wrong it is—especially in the Trump era—to draw sharp lines between protest and electoral action. She details what drove millions to come out in revolt against Trump, explains who they are, and demonstrates how the early marches translated into the unprecedented political engagement of 2018. There are lessons here for 2020 and beyond. -- E. J. Dionne, Jr., coauthor of One Nation After Trump: A Guide for the Perplexed, the Disillusioned, the Desperate, and the Not-Yet DeportedAmerican Resistance charts the course of the anti-Trump surge in activism and organizing, shedding light on crucial realities and busting myths along the way. This is a must-read for anyone who wants to understand the people-powered movements that are changing American politics in the Trump era. -- Leah Greenberg, co-executive director, IndivisibleAfter the shocking 2016 election, millions of Americans took to streets and meeting halls to fight President Trump’s agenda and revitalize U.S. democracy. Using interviews with the leaders of national political groups and surveys of thousands of participants in D.C. protest marches, Dana R. Fisher offers a window into their passionate, loosely coordinated efforts to boost 2018 Democratic fortunes in Congress and the states while proclaiming a very un-Trumpian vision for the country’s future. -- Theda Skocpol, director, Scholars Strategy Network, and Victor S. Thomas Professor of Government and Sociology, Harvard UniversityExactly what happened between the 2016 election of Donald Trump and the 2018 takeover of the House of Representatives by Democrats, and how did it happen? While conventional wisdom lazily suggested a pendulum swing, Dana R. Fisher, using survey data of participants in the two-year-long Resistance, gets under the skin of this movement to help us understand how it initially came together and then was able to sustain itself through the 2018 elections. More than just a fascinating piece of sociological research, Fisher's study will be a valuable resource for movement activists, helping them better understand the inner dynamics of their organizing work. -- James Zogby, founder of the Arab American Institute and board member of Our RevolutionTerrific. -- Micah L. Sifry * The New Republic *The comprehensive guide to the Resistance: the backlash to the 2016 elections, the Blue Wave of 2018, and the enthusiasm leading to 2020. -- Ian Silverii * Colorado Politics *The book accomplishes the challenging task of informing a general audience with an interest in social movements while bringing original data and a wealth of political science and sociological research to bear on the study of “the Resistance.” * Perspectives on Politics *American Resistance will appeal to social movement scholars as well as anyone interested in understanding contemporary social change efforts. * Mobilization *Fisher’s work is unapologetically descriptive, drawing from a unique series of surveys of protestors in Washington, DC in 2017 and 2018...The data that resulted from these surveys are the most important contribution of Fisher’s book, as measuring the attitudes of protestors is a fraught business. * Contemporary Sociology *Recommended. * Choice *For anyone concerned about the state of civic engagement, Fisher presents a treasure trove of new evidence, some of it interesting and encouraging * Social Forces *Interestingly, although American Resistance focuses on protests and protesters, the book may be most effective at illustrating how a lot of people are working hard to change society even when—and perhaps especially when—they are not visible in the streets. * American Journal of Sociology *Table of ContentsPrefaceAcknowledgments1. Indiana University Press At the Crossroads of Music and Social Justice
Book SynopsisTrade ReviewAn insightful critique of ethnomusicology that challenges its colonialist roots and the resulting inequalities and exclusionary practices. At the Crossroads of Music and Social Justice provides multiple paths to restructuring the discipline around the ideologies of social justice. In the process, the 'new norm' embraces difference—the ideas, opinions, approaches, and priorities of historically marginalized groups. This book turns the discipline on its head with the goal of encouraging ethnomusicologists to engage in self-reflection on how we research, teach and practice ethnomusicology. At the Crossroads of Music and Social Justice is an ideal companion for monographs on the history of the field. -- Portia K. Maultsby, coeditor of Issues in African American Music: Power, Gender, Race, Representation and African American Music: An Introduction, 2nd ed.The book's emphasis on a justice-oriented ethnomusicology offers hope. Gathering what could be called testimonio-like narratives by established scholars, the editors work to reimagine the field as one that is justice-oriented and in the process take the pulse of this exciting and necessary discipline. The editors have culled the work of authors to present the pedagogical implications as well as the practice of a social justice approach to the study of music and to performance. They are spot on in grouping the chapters around four main themes: Truth Telling and Listening Lovingly, Radical Inclusivity, Coalition Building, and Direct Action. The contributors' voices build a coherent picture through intriguing explorations of the field and offer new directions toward a justice-oriented ethnomusicology. -- Norma E. Cambridge University Press Mobilizing at the Urban Margins
Book SynopsisIn October 2019, unprecedented mobilizations in Chile took the world by surprise. An outburst of protests plunged a stable democracy into the deepest social and political crisis since its dictatorship in the 1980s. Although the protests involved a myriad of organizations, the organizational capabilities provided by underprivileged urban dwellers proved essential in sustaining collective action in an increasingly repressive environment. Based on a comparative ethnography and over six years of fieldwork, Mobilizing at the Urban Margins uses the case of Chile to study how social mobilization endures in marginalized urban contexts, allowing activists to engage in large-scale democratizing processes. The book investigates why and how some urban communities succumb to exclusion, while others react by resurrecting collective action to challenge unequal regimes of citizenship. Rich and insightful, the book develops the novel analytical framework of ''mobilizational citizenship'' to explain thiTrade Review'Throughout the world the urban poor struggle against oppression and dispossession by organising in their neighbourhoods. Book SynopsisSlutWalk explores representations of the global anti-rape movement of the same name, in mainstream news and feminist blogs around the world. It reveals strategies and practices used to adapt the movement to suit local cultures and contexts and explores how social media organized, theorized and publicized this contemporary feminist campaign.Trade Review“SlutWalk … is an important contribution to feminist (social) media activism. I recommend the book for scholars interested in researching media representations of feminism and political activism mobilizing via social media platforms. It can also be of interest for educators who would like to introduce their graduate students to the particular steps of research design in feminist media studies. … it is a valuable contribution to the recording of women’s place in the twenty-first century history of social activism.” (Barát Erzsébet, Hungarian Journal of English and American Studies, Vol. 22 (2), Fall, 2016)“The author has written an accessible, well-organized, and meticulously researched book that will introduce readers to the SlutWalk movement, as well as provide a broader critique of rape culture, and much needed empirical data on the dynamics of contemporary global social movement mobilization–feminist or otherwise. … an important contribution to future scholarship for feminism and social movements.” (Victoria O’Meara, Feminist Media Studies, 2016)“Kaitlynn Mendes’ book SlutWalk: Feminism, Activism and Media examines the global antirape movement ‘SlutWalk’ and its coverage in the feminist blogosphere and mainstream media. … Mendes’ monograph has the potential to serve feminist activist groups and antirape activists around the globe by providing contextual and applicable information on a type of march that so many were probably involved in themselves. … As for its use by academics, the book would be ideal for undergraduate or graduate classes … .” (Giuliana Sorce, International Journal of Communication, Vol. 10 (4), 2016)“The target audience is most likely those already familiar with feminism, or the SlutWalk movement, but anyone interested in these concepts would find the book appealing. The book works well in the classroom covering topics related to media, communication, feminism, activism and women’s rights and it displays one way in which a small grass movement initiated through social media can become a global phenomenon reaching millions of people and inspiring activism.” (Hennie Weiss, metapsychology, Vol. 19 (51), December, 2015)Table of Contents1. Bloomsbury Publishing PLC The Power of Populism and People
Book SynopsisRecent years have seen a disturbing advance in populist and authoritarian styles of rule and, in response, a rise in popular activism. Strongmen, especially since the advent of fascism, have formed their base of power in popular acclaim. But what power do the people have in checking the rise of tyranny? In this book an international team of experts representing several academic disciplines examines the power relationship between peoples and their rulers. It is among the first to study this globally as a problem of nation states. From populism in 19th-century Latin America to eastern Europe since the collapse of communism, to the Arab Spring and contemporary Russia and China, the cases in this book span five continents and twelve nations. Taken together, they reveal how different forms of popular opposition have succeeded or failed in unseating authoritarian regimes and expose the tactics and strategies used by regimes to repress people power and create an image of popular support. Trade ReviewThis collection is essential reading for our turbulent times. Unique in their global scope, the essays in this volume address the multivalent role of the crowd and mass public mobilization in both enabling and contesting the authoritarian movements. Profoundly relevant, this volume contributes greatly to our understanding of the relationship among modern populism, collective action, and the contemporary crises of democracy. * Marla Stone, Professor of History, Occidental College, USA *This masterful volume reminds us that mass mobilization does not always lead to democracy, nor are the outcomes of pro-democratic mobilization always assured. It treats the current wave of autocratization in historical context and offers important insights about some of the oft-overlooked downsides of an engaged civil society. An important contribution. * Erica Chenoweth, Frank Stanton Professor of the First Amendment, Harvard University, USA *The crises of liberal democracy, of unbridled globalization and digital mob rule, have shoved humanity toward a morass where the most vicious tendencies of the modern world flourish. These far-ranging, intelligent essays in scholarly vigilance will help elevate the conversation about the prospects for viable self-government as dictatorial movements threaten to poison the future. * Todd Gitlin, Professor of Journalism and Sociology, and Chair, Ph. Bloomsbury Publishing PLC On Bernard Stiegler
Book SynopsisWhat I love, and those whom I love, you, that is to say us in so far as we are capable of forming a we, all this I love, and I love them, and I love you infinitely (Bernard Steigler April 1952- August 2020).When Bernard Stiegler writes I love you in the quote above, he openly provokes us to question or experience the meaning or contact of these words. He also invites us to question the relationship between a thinker''s life and their thought. For Stiegler, they were inextricable. His life was one that focused on friendship but not friendships at a purely social level but ones that produced philosophy, politics, and existential truths.Bringing together scholars who knew Stiegler, including Shaj Mohan, Achille Mbembe, Divya Dwivedi, Peter Szendy, and Emily Apter, this volume provides an original - and personal - insight into his life and philosophy. Each piece gives a sense of the wide range of Stiegler's work and how it affected the praxis of the philosopher iTable of Contents1. New York University Press Coming Out of Communism
Book SynopsisHow homophobic backlash unexpectedly strengthened mobilization for LGBT political rights in post-communist Europe While LGBT activism has increased worldwide, there has been strong backlash against LGBT people in Eastern Europe. Although Russia is the most prominent anti-gay regime in the region, LGBT individuals in other post-communist countries also suffer from discriminatory laws and prejudiced social institutions. Combining an historical overview with interviews and case studies in Poland, Hungary, Romania, Slovakia, and the Czech Republic, Conor O'Dwyer analyzes the development and impact of LGBT movements in post-communist Eastern and Central Europe. O'Dwyer argues that backlash against LGBT individuals has had the paradoxical effect of encouraging stronger and more organized activism, significantly impacting the social movement landscape in the region. As these peripheral Eastern and Central European countries vie for inclusion or at least recognition in the increasingly LGBT-frTrade ReviewReaders will learn a great deal about activist groups in those countries, and will understand the role “Europeanization” had on the LGBT movement after the fall of communism … This book will best serve graduate students, faculty, and practitioners in politics. * Choice *This book is an ambitious, mixed-method examination of LGBT activism in postcommunist East-Central Europe that makes the counterintuitive argument that backlash to international pressures can be constructive to a social movement’s development... Coming Out of Communism is a tour de force in comparative analysis, interrogating civil society—which is notoriously difficult to study—and covering issues often ignored by the field. * Perspectives on Politics *In this masterful and timely study, ODwyer shows us how backlash can paradoxically benefit the domestic organizing capacity of LGBT rights advocates. This is a novel and compelling argument, substantiated by meticulously documented contention around those rights in post-communist Central and Eastern Europe. In crafting this argument, ODwyer demonstrates the great potential that the often-ignored study of LGBT politics offers for understanding a host of theoretical debates pertinent to political scientists. As unfettered populism and nationalism shake the core of liberal democracies, this book is needed more than ever, because it provides a sliver of hope in times of great peril for the most vulnerable among us. -- Phillip M. Ayoub,Author of When States Come Out: Europe's Sexual Minorities and the Politics of VisibilityWhy has LGBT rights activism flourished in some post-communist states and floundered in others following accession to the European Union? How come joining the EU was, in some places, accompanied by increasingly intolerant public attitudes toward sexual minorities, rather than acceptance? In Coming Out of Communism, Conor ODwyer solves these puzzles, highlighting the role of homophobic backlash in provoking stronger organizing for LGBT rights in the region.Anyone interested in LGBT issues, social movements, or the impact of transnational institutions on domestic politics, will undoubtedly enjoy learning from ODwyers keen analysis and intriguing field research in Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, and Romania. -- Valerie Sperling,Author of Sex, Politics, and Putin: Political Legitimacy in RussiaCompelling and illuminating, especially where O’Dwyer’s local informants, observation, and research blends with synthesis from area-specific scholarship. * Slavic Review *

Cornell University Press Protest Politics in the Marketplace
Book SynopsisProtest Politics in the Marketplace examines how social media has revolutionized the use and effectiveness of consumer activism. In her groundbreaking book, Caroline Heldman emphasizes that consumer activism is a democratizing force that improves political participation, self-governance, and the accountability of corporations and the government. She also investigates the use of these tactics by conservatives.Heldman analyzes the democratic implications of boycotting, socially responsible investing, social media campaigns, and direct consumer actions, highlighting the ways in which such consumer activism serves as a countervailing force against corporate power in politics. In Protest Politics in the Marketplace, she blends democratic theory with data, historical analysis, and coverage of consumer campaigns for civil rights, environmental conservation, animal rights, gender justice, LGBT rights, and other causes. Using an inter-disciplinary approach applicable to politicTrade ReviewHeldman builds on studies by historians and sociologists to look at market activism as a political phenomenon.... A fruitful area for political science research, and her book should be widely read. * Choice *Caroline Heldman's Protest Politics in the Marketplace successfully accomplishes her goal to argue how and why consumer activism in the United States should be considered by academics as empirical indicators of a healthy democracy, rather than the predominant perspective that Americans are becoming less civically and politically engaged. * American Journal of Sociology *Table of ContentsList of Illustrations Preface List of Abbreviations Introduction 1.
