    DABA Permutations

Book SynopsisThe first collection of the Beat mentor’s long-influential permutation poems—one of the earliest examples of computer-generated literature Written between 1958 and 1982, Brion Gysin's "permutation poems" begin with short phrases or sentences whose constituent words are exhaustively rearranged over the course of the text. At first, Gysin wrote these poems manually, although later, in collaboration with programmer Ian Sommerville, he would write permutation poems with the assistance of a computer, making them a very early instance of computer-generated literature. Some of these works were published in books, while others exist only as audio recordings. Many derive from a 1960 BBC radio commission, “The Permutated Poems of Brion Gysin,” in which readings of the texts were recorded, cut up, modulated and overlapped. For the first time, this collection brings together all published and—where transcribable—unpublished versions of each poem, as well as "Cut-Ups Self-Explained," a short text by Gysin that contextualizes the work. The poems are organized in chronological order by first publication or first recording, with further versions of each poem grouped together in chronological order immediately after the initial version. This organization brings distinctions between versions into relief, allowing readers to explore the playful systematicity that undergirds this remarkable body of work. Brion Gysin (1916–86) was a multidisciplinary artist, author and poet. Born in Taplow, England, he studied painting at the Sorbonne in Paris and immigrated to New York in 1939. In the 1950s he lived in Tangier, where he first met William S. Burroughs. Gysin collaborated often; after returning to Paris, he developed the "cut-up method" with Burroughs, and with engineer Ian Sommerville he created the Dreamachine, a kinetic light sculpture. Gysin would become a mentor for generations of artists, musicians and writers, including David Bowie, John Giorno, Keith Haring, Brian Jones and Genesis Breyer P-Orridge, among others.Trade ReviewUnderlines avant-garde literature’s ability to identify politically significant kinds of ambiguity; uncertainties and illegibilities inherent to the media we consume and the languages we speak. -- Lucy Ives * Art In America *

Book SynopsisOsman's writing reinvents poetry as an instrument for dissecting vision, language and power This extensive collection of poet Jena Osman’s acclaimed work spans more than 30 years, gathering poems from journals and books long out of print. Her poetry traces overlooked visual and linguistic incidents across centuries of American history, transforming "official" language—from Supreme Court opinions to the chatter of Predator drone pilots—into writing that is comic, chilling and relentlessly inventive. Jena Osman’s (born 1963) books include Motion Studies (Ugly Duckling Presse, 2019), Public Figures (Wesleyan University Press, 2012), The Network (Fence Books, 2010, selected for the National Poetry Series in 2009), An Essay in Asterisks (Roof Books, 2004) and The Character (Beacon Press, winner of the 1998 Barnard New Women Poets Prize). She lives in Philadelphia.

Book SynopsisBy combining literary and dramatic narrative with eye-witness accounts of Sasquatch encounters culled from the internet, The Securely Conferred, Vouchsafed Keepsakes of Maery S. reinvents as many versions of the Frankenstein author Mary Shelley as there are definitions of the word “Gothic.” In this work, a string of financial, maternal, and familial misfortunes causes Shelley—referred to in this production as Maery S.—to spawn a monstrous creative expression, which takes on its own life and violent history. Maery cannot help but fall  in love with her Monster, only to see it “collected” and imprisoned by charitable funding at a mandatory artists’ residency.

Grappling with loss, the futility of language and the distances of countries, these poems are an accumulation of the speaker's struggles and senses. Interconnecting locales across generations, they set out what it means to belong and what it means to mean.

Book SynopsisRibwort is a space to sit down with your pain and listen. You may think it's not helpful, like a leaf of ribwort on a bleeding wound. The pain will probably be growing more and more acute, but if you face it, if you hold space for it. Eventually it will shrink to the size of a scratch which a leaf of ribwort can help to heal. When we have healed, we become leaves of ribwort for others, so we can sit down with their pain and listen. Listen with compassion and without fear, without getting defensive or running away. This is what keeps us going. In the summer of 2021, Hanna Komar brought the script for this book to a publisher in Belarus. He told her his business was going to be shut down for her protest poems. He couldn't publish them. Since then, almost all independent publishers of Belarusian books in the Belarusian language have had their business suspended or liquidated. Books have been labelled 'extremist' and people have been imprisoned for selling or owning them, while writers ha

Book SynopsisA father-to-be making deals with a god of his own design; the after-effects of a child's murder upon a suburban neighbourhood; a teenage boy negotiating the many perils of high-school while trying to hide his family's faith; a woman aiming a rifle at her rapist and his family and making split-second choices these subjects and many more make up the debut collection from S.M. Field, a poet singular in fearlessness and execution. Through gritty language and stark imagery, S.M. Field navigates the messy complexities of relationships, politics, and personal struggles. From scathing critiques of societal norms to unapologetic reflections on identity and power dynamics, this collection will shock, provoke, and offer unique insights into our modern human condition.

The 87 Press Sea in my Bones: Mar en los Huesos

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThe fourth collection of poetry in Juana Goergen's rich trajectory, Mar en los huesos [Sea in my Bones] bears witness to a shared collective experience of trauma. It interweaves indigenous and African belief systems, languages, and memories to recollect the Caribbean's ancestral past and its imagination of the future. As is true of all memory work, Sea in my Bones simultaneously speaks to the broken present: its cry against injustice rests on the hope that through its labor, "the Zemies might awaken and the Caribbean peoples' origin be remembered." A multilingual tour de force that slips between Spanish, Taino, and Yoruba, Goergen's deployment of the poem as trace, as evidence, results in a cacophony of voices that bring together what life has torn apart. At the same time, the collection poses questions for all of us about the role of poetry in communities that have survived collective trauma. In the absence of justice can such poetry of witness serve as a form of restitution? Or does it hold the promise of something else?
