Book SynopsisThis is a book that compiles poetry written over years of observation. Words are mere concoction of thoughts, thoughts that have been plenty. These have been threaded together and put forth for everyone to read. From nature to philosophy. From darkness to awakening, all enclosed with a feminine touch. This book, as the title describes, is the dawn of new age poetry. The five categories of poems touch upon several aspects. Beyond, has poetry that talks about the extra ordinary, the human responses and the perceptions of human mind. Melancholy, explores dark poetry. It encompasses the deprived and deeply saddened thoughts. Life, encloses poetry that brings to light the philosophical aspect of life and its journey. Essence, envelopes poetry pertaining to nature, our surroundings and their impact on us. Woman, as the name suggests has poetry regarding women, their strength and the hurdles they face.

  • The Inferno

    Mint Editions The Inferno

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisSo many versions of the Divine Comedy exist in English that a new one might well seem needless. But most of these translations are in verse, and the intellectual temper of our time is impatient of a transmutation in which substance is sacrificed for form's sake, and the new form is itself different from the original No poem in any tongue is more informed with rhythmic life than the Divine Comedy. And yet, such is its extraordinary distinction, no poem has an intellectual and emotional substance more independent of its metrical form. At the age of thirty-five, Dante is lost. Metaphorically by temptation and the turns of life's ever-changing path; and literally, in a dark and ominous wood to which there seems no escape. Attacked by three beasts of Hell, Dante has no recourse but to retreat into the hopeless darkness of the wood, saved only by the light of the Roman poet, Virgil sent forth to guide him through the underworld and to salvation by the Divine Symbol of Love, Beatrice. Journeying through the Nine Circles of Satan's domain, Dante is met by historical figures and acquaintances alikewhose acts of violence, fraud, treachery, and betrayal in life forged chains of nightmares and suffering in death. Hailed as one of the greatest works of literature ever written, The Divine Comedy is a highly influential poem that has dazzled readers for over five centuries, with its' first book, The Inferno, being one of the most recognizable pieces of fiction ever published. Revisit the masterfully crafted story of Dante's descent into Hell, with a beloved translation by revered American scholar Charles Eliot Norton, adapted into prose. Since our inception in 2020, Mint Editions has kept sustainability and innovation at the forefront of our mission. • In Praise of Hands: Woodcuts by Naoko Matsubara -

Ashmolean Museum In Praise of Hands: Woodcuts by Naoko Matsubara -

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThis creative collaboration between artist Naoko Matsubara and poet Penny Boxall celebrates in words and colours the beauty and variety of the human hand. The series of dynamic woodcuts at the heart of this book was initially inspired by the artist’s wonder at the busy hand movements of her baby son and grew into a wider celebration of hands in all their extraordinary variety – hands engaged in music, sport, prayer, or creative acts. The woodcuts convey a sense of joy and energy, whether exploring the symbolism of gestures, playing with form and colour, or expressing a mood or emotion. Penny Boxall’s new poems were specially written to accompany the woodcuts. In their clarity and playfulness, their range of mood and their deceptive simplicity, they form a remarkable creative synergy with the art works. During the coronavirus pandemic the subject of hands – and the idea of touch or its absence – has taken on a new significance. Many of the images in the series have taken on powerful new meanings: healing hands, hands finding ways to occupy hours of furlough, or hands clapping in support of those working to keep us safe. We are particularly delighted that this elegant book has been designed by Yoshiki Waterhouse, Naoko Matsubara’s son, whose baby hands were the original inspiration for the series.

Goose Lane Editions Collected Poems of Alden Nowlan

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisTrade Review"The publication of this book is an historic event in our literature. The collection is a life's work, and like the work of life, this writing wrestles with ancient forces that are pure and unchanging. Nobody else saw the world with Alden's kind of clarity and nobody else worked the language so hard — trying to make it hold, or embrace, our shared experience with such furious tenderness. If you still think honesty is possible, if you worry sometimes about truth and the struggle for sincere connection, Collected Poems of Alden Nowlan will give you comfort." -- Alexander MacLeod"Well over thirty years after his death, Alden Nowlan's poems are still hot-blooded — living, breathing incantations that beat with the pulse of Eastern Canada. Imbued with what Brian Bartlett dubs "the illusion of speech," Collected Poems of Alden Nowlan brings together the work of a master craftsman, a writer whose rangy, conversational poems benefit from appearing where they emerged within his career arc. A definitive volume that consolidates Nowlan's standing in Canadian letters." -- Jim Johnstone"The Collected Poems of Alden Nowlan may be the most important book of poetry published in Canada this year." -- Michael Dennis * Today's Book of Poetry *

  • Greek Lyric

Hackett Publishing Co, Inc Greek Lyric

Book SynopsisTrade ReviewMiller is one of the ablest experts in the language of Greek poetry, and he has a razor-sharp sense for the nuances of the wording. A lastingly important sourcebook; I strongly recommend it. --Gregory Nagy, Harvard UniversityAndrew Miller is one of the--if not the--leading authority on classical antiquity’s most difficult lyric poet, Pindar. This book of translations and social and literary commentary proudly takes its place next to Richmond Lattimore’s. There is no better introduction to the problems and accomplishments of Greek lyric poetry, and the expert will appreciate the seriousness and brilliance of insight from a Hellenist of the highest caliber. --Joseph M. Romero, Mary Washington College. . . the translations are first-rate, better than anything comparable I know. The author is intelligent and scrupulous; he succeeds in maintaining a much higher level of accuracy and readability than any of his competitors. --Emmet Robbins, University of Toronto

Book SynopsisMeineck and Woodruff''s new annotated translations of Sophocles'' Ajax, Women of Trachis, Electra, and Philoctetes combine the same standards of accuracy, concision, clarity, and powerful speech that have so often made their Theban Plays a source of epiphany in the classroom and of understanding in the theatre. Woodruff''s Introduction offers a brisk and stimulating discussion of central themes in Sophoclean drama, the life of the playwright, staging issues, and each of the four featured plays.Trade ReviewIn these new translations Meineck and Woodruff have struck a near-ideal balance between accuracy and readability, formality and colloquialism. Their versions are simply a pleasure to read, conveying with remarkable vividness the powerful characterizations and poetic variety of the originals. The addition of succinct but illuminating notes makes this an exemplary volume for anyone interested in Sophocles' dramatic art. --Andrew Szegedy-Maszak, Department of Classics, Wesleyan University[T]his sequel to the same pair's well-received translation of the Theban plays hits an appropriate mean . . . a text that I could happily adopt for teaching. --Malcolm Heath in Greece and RomeTable of ContentsIntroduction; Notes on the Translations; Map: Sophoclean geography; House of Pelops Family Tree; Ajax; Women of Trachis; Electra; Philoctetes; Endnotes.

  • The Faerie Queene Book One

Hackett Publishing Co, Inc The Faerie Queene Book One

    4 in stock

Book SynopsisPart of a series of Spenser's work in five volumes, these works include an introduction, annotation, note on the text, bibliography, glossary, and an index of characters. Spenser's letter to Raleigh and a short life of Spenser appear in every volume.Trade ReviewTwo editions of Spenser are both from the same series, published by Hackett Publishing Company, which is providing inexpensive paperback volumes of The Faerie Queene, under the general editorship of Abraham Stoll. The volumes printed this year, books 1 and 5, are edited, respectively, by Carol V. Kaske and Stoll himself. A single volume combining books 3 and 4, edited by Dorothy Stephens, is forthcoming, as is book 6, edited by Andrew Hadfield. The volumes are attractively printed, with notes at the bottom of the page. Each volume includes an introduction, the Letter to Raleigh, a brief 'Life of Edmund Spenser,' textual notes, a glossary, an 'Index of Characters,' and a bibliography. Kaske's introduction to book 1 forms an accessible student guide, touching on a wide range of topics, from versification, genre, and allegory, to 'Spenser's Religious Milieu.' At the same time, there are fresh flashes of insight, no doubt derived from Kaske's long experience of teaching a complex poem. . . . Eschewing 'political and biographical allegory (p. xvi), the notes offer plenty of help to the student seeking to get behind the veil of Spenser's dark conceit, for they emphasize symbolism and historical context, especially literary context or 'sources.' Stoll's edition of book 5 of the Faerie Queene includes a judicious introduction of considerable merit. Not simply well written and learned, it partitions the information in an accessible and interesting way. Stoll is fully attuned to the recent controversies surrounding the Legend of Justice, but he does more than record them for the student reader; he manages to express sympathy for both poet and poem. Students need to hear the historical nature of Spenser's achievement for English literature, and Stoll leads nicely with this topic: book 5 is 'one of the most challenging meditations on justice in English literature' (p. ix). Stoll is as sensitive to the violence of book 5 as he is to its strangeness and beauty. Students will appreciate the short inventory of important works of criticism at the end of each section. The notes are not as full as Kaske's, but perhaps appropriately so. . . . I look forward to having access to the remaining volumes in this series. --Patrick Cheney, Studies in English Literature 1500-1900

Broadview Press Ltd Bell in Campo and The Sociable Companions

    10 in stock

Book SynopsisWritten during the English Civil War and Interregnum when the public theatres were closed and Margaret Cavendish was living away from England in exile, Bell in Campo and The Sociable Companions are scathing satires that speak to the role of women's agency amidst this cultural tumult. In Bell in Campo, a group of virtuous women follow their husbands to war and, refusing to remain docilely out of harm's way, form an army of their own. The Sociable Companions details the struggles of four women from impoverished Royalist families trying to survive in a rapacious marriage market at the war's end. This Broadview Edition presents these two complementary plays together, along with supplementary materials on Cavendish's life, the participation of women in the combat of the English Civil War, the conduct of the Royalist military forces, and seventeenth-century social and marriage conventions.Trade Review“This useful edition is supported by excerpts from Cavendish’s autobiography and prefaces as well as by new and interesting materials taken from historical sources. Of particular value are the two appendices on warrior women, one of which transcribes portions of the correspondence of Queen Henrietta Maria. The edition will be valuable for beginning students and advanced scholars alike.” — James Fitzmaurice, Northern Arizona University“This edition forms an important and useful contribution to contemporary Cavendish scholarship. It is the first Cavendish play-text edition to present a 1662 and a 1668 play on similar subjects side by side, thus enabling comparative critical perspectives on Cavendish’s response to the English Civil War, as well as appraisal of her evolving dramatic technique. The edition is generously supplied with secondary materials; the contextual appendices detailing the exploits of contemporary women warriors or viragos, including Henrietta Maria, are of particular interest.” — Gweno Williams, York St. John College of The University of Leeds.Table of ContentsAcknowledgementsIntroductionMargaret Cavendish: A Brief ChronologyA Note on the TextBell in CampoThe Sociable CompanionsAppendix A: Selections from Margaret Cavendish’s AutobiographyAppendix B: The Purposes of Plays: Selections from Prefacesto Playes (1662)Appendix C: Warrior Women and Royalist Disorder: Lettersfrom the FrontAppendix D: Warrior Women: The Queen and the WarAppendix E: Marriage Markets: Selections from MargaretCavendish’s Sociable Letters (1664)Selected Bibliography

    Broadview Press Ltd Shakespeare's Heroines

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisFirst published in 1832, Shakespeare’s Heroines is a unique hybrid of Shakespeare criticism, women’s rights activism, and conduct literature. Jameson’s collection of readings of female characters includes praise for unexpected role models as varied as Portia, Cleopatra, and Lady Macbeth; her interpretations of these and other characters portray intellect, passion, political ambition, and eroticism as acceptable aspects of women’s behaviour. This inventive work of literary criticism addresses the problems of women’s education and participation in public life while also providing insightful, original, and entertaining readings of Shakespeare’s women. This Broadview Edition includes a critical introduction that places Shakespeare’s Heroines in the context of Jameson’s literary career and political life. Appendices include personal correspondence and other literary and political writings by Jameson, examples of eighteenth- and nineteenth-century Shakespeare criticism, and selections from Victorian conduct books.Trade Review“This edition of Anna Jameson’s Shakespeare’s Heroines fills an important gap in available resources of this significant writer in an intelligent, well-informed manner. Adept as a researcher, a literary critic, and a writer, Professor Larsen Hoeckley brings to the task at hand an admirable ability to make connections where others before have failed to see them. Broadview Press deserves commendation for putting an important literary ‘foremother’ back in the public eye with the publication of Shakespeare’s Heroines, now properly situated in its historical and critical context.” ― Carol Hanbery MacKay, University of Texas at AustinTable of ContentsAcknowledgementsIntroductionAnna Murphy Jameson: A Brief ChronologyA Note on the TextShakespeare’s HeroinesAppendix A: Jameson’s Writing on Women, Work, and Acting From Sisters of Charity, Catholic and Protestant, Abroad and at Home (1855) From The Communion of Labour (1856) “Mrs. Siddons” in Visits and Sketches at Home and Abroad (1834) Appendix B: Jameson’s Correspondence Bessie Rayner Parkes, 1856-59 Elizabeth Barrett Browning, 1856 Frances Anne Kemble, 1831-32 Ottilie von Goethe, 1836 Appendix C: Contemporary Reviews of Characteristics of Women The Monthly Review (1832) The Literary Gazette (1832) Blackwood’s Edinburgh Magazine (1833) Appendix D: Conduct Books From Sarah Stickney Ellis, The Women of England:Their Social Duties and Domestic Habits (1939) From John Ruskin, “Of Queen’s Gardens” in Sesame and Lilies (1865) Appendix E: Eighteenth- and Nineteenth-Century Shakespeare Criticism From William Richardson, “On Shakespeare’s Imitation of Female Characters” in Essays on Shakespeare’s Dramatic Character of Sir John Falstaff and on his Imitation of Female Characters (1789) From William Hazlitt, Characters of Shakespeare’s Plays (1817) From Frances Anne Kemble, “Notes on Macbeth No. II.” in Notes upon Some of Shakespeare’s Plays (1882) Select Bibliography

  • Cleanness

    Broadview Press Ltd Cleanness

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThis edition provides a new facing-page translation of an important Middle English alliterative poem, generally attributed to the author of Sir Gawain and the Green Knight. A complex meditation on courtly and religious ideals, Cleanness has been praised for its densely figurative language, elaborate descriptive set pieces, and moving depictions of cosmic and human drama. More recently, the poem has also attracted attention for contributing to the history of sexuality in its comparatively frank discussion of sexual practices.Kevin Gustafson’s new translation captures the original’s poetic qualities while making the often difficult text accessible to modern readers. The facing-page format allows readers to experience the original alliterative Middle English and to compare the texts. Appendices include relevant verses from the Douay-Rheims Bible and excerpts from contemporary romances, chronicles, and theological writings.Trade Review“In recent years, Cleanness has come into its own as one of the most significant English poems for the study of late medieval attitudes toward sexuality, sin, and pleasure. Kevin Gustafson’s superb new edition and translation is the best text of Cleanness available for classroom use; not only medievalists, but students of spirituality and of the history of sexuality will all find it essential.” — Robert Sturges, Arizona State University“Kevin Gustafson’s new edition and translation ends the era of excuses for not teaching Cleanness. He provides a trustworthy Middle English text and crafts a careful, literal translation that captures the narrative energy, rich pathos, and pensive tone of the original without mimicry or self-conscious device. The critical introduction and primary documents allow the reader to study the poem in literary and theological context. We now can give our students a much fuller picture of medieval alliterative poetry and can confront together in the classroom the dynamic and challenging issues of religion, sex, race, and violence that Cleanness so relentlessly explores.” — Michael Calabrese, California State University, Los AngelesTable of ContentsAcknowledgementsIntroductionA Note on the TextA Note on the TranslationA Note on Alliterative VerseCleannessAppendix A: Biblical Sources From Genesis From Exodus From 2 Chronicles From Jeremiah From Daniel From Matthew From Luke Appendix B: Other Sources From Guillaume de Lorris and Jean de Meun, The Romance of the Rose (c. 1275) From The Travels of Sir John Mandeville (c. 1356) Appendix C: Background Materials From Augustine, Concerning the City of God against the Pagans (413–26) From Peter Damian, Book of Gomorrah (c. 1048) From Alain of Lille, The Plaint of Nature (c. 1170) From William Durandus, Rationale Divinorum Officiorum (1286) Works Cited and Further Reading
