Book SynopsisOver the years, Daniel Blaufuks (b. 1963, lives in Lisbon, Portugal) has engaged in a daily exercise of poetry, introspection, meditation. Each day, on a sheet of paper, he meticulously creates a composition combining his instant photographs, found images, documents and words in the languages he speaks (English, Portuguese, German, French), before stamping it with a number.Entitled The Days Are Numbered, this vast project resembles an imprecise daily notebook - Blaufuks refers to it as a non-diary - at the intersection between individual and collective memory. Nourished by a succession of states of mind, manifesting the eternal return of things, seasons, places or facts, The Days Are Numbered challenges our programmed amnesia. This book contains pages no. 1840 to 2206 from the year 2023.A diary is also an act of resistance. Wiley-VCH Verlag GmbH Oxygen: A Play in 2 Acts

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisWhat motivates a scientist? One key factor is the pressure from the competition to be the first to discover something new. The moral consequences of this are the subject of the play "Oxygen", dealing with the discovery of this all-important element. The focus of the play is on chemical and political revolutions, as well as the Nobel Prize, which will be awarded for the 100th time in 2001. The action takes place in 1777 and 2001; and the play is written for 3 actors and 3 actresses who play a total of 11 characters. The world premiere will take place in early 2001 in San Diego, and the German premiere in September. The world-famous authors Carl Djerassi and Roald Hoffmann are a guarantee of excellence and suspense, both in their role as scientists -- Carl Djerassi is known as the "Father of the Pill" while Roald Hoffmann received the Nobel Prize for chemistry in 1982 - as well as in their role as authors -- Djerassi has written several successful novels, while Hoffmann is renowned for his poetry.Trade ReviewPart of a feature story on Carl Djerassi: "It is 50 years since Carl Djerassi invented the contraceptive pill... and changed human behaviour for good. He has not stood still since... His latest work... a play called... "Oxygen"... examines the nature of achievement and accolades." (The Economist Technology Quarterly, June 23, 2001) Part of the information regarding the ACS meeting on the editor's page: "If you are one of those lucky chemists going to San Diego, be sure to... see on of the performances of the world premiere of "Oxygen"... If you're not coming,... you might want to read the play, which is being published by Wiley-VCH." (Chemical and Engineering News, March 5, 2001) "...the mere existence of the play is to be applauded, and the authors congratulated." (Education in Chemistry, November 2001) "The play works very well." (The Lancet, 17 November 2001) "Oxygen is an important stage in the move towards a more inclusive form of education and plays testimony to the power of theatre to open up the possibility of an interdisciplinary way of viewing the world." (Irish Times, 23 November 2001) As the play's cover notes declare, 'the ethical issues around priority and discovery at the heart of this play are as timely today as they were in 1777'...Harold Varmus, Nobel Prize in Medicine, comments ‘With wit, scholarship, and stage craftsmanship, Oxygen shows us how much scientists have learned about the world and how little they have changed.'" (Advanced Materials & Processes, July 2001) "The book of the play is stylishly produced.... If you have not seen the play, I thoroughly commend the book to you." (Interdisciplinary Science Review, Vol.27, No.1, 2002) "...We give Oxygen, an enjoyable, engrossing, and above all provocative and thought-provoking play and enthusiastic two thumbs up."(The Chemical Educator, Vol.8, No.2, 2003)Table of ContentsBy the same Authors. Book SynopsisThousands of republicans were imprisoned over a thirty-year period and served lengthy sentences beginning in 1970 as a result of the struggle to end British rule in Ireland. Their experiences generated huge body of prison literature, comparable to earlier periods in the independence struggle. Former POWs, as well as writing their memoirs, have written short stories, novels, plays and screenplays and, of course, poetry. The writings of Bobby Sands, for example, have never been out of print over the past forty-two years and have been translated into many languages.Eoghan ''Gino'' Mac Cormaic from Derry served fifteen years in jail and was on the blanket protest for five years at a time when ten of his comrades died on hunger strike. Eoghan began writing poems on toilet paper and cigarette papers and smuggled them out to his family who kept them safe from British Army raids and seizures. Some of the poems were published in Republican News.A selection of these early ''blanket'' poems, and other prison poems written after the protest, give us an insight into Eoghan and his comrades'' lives - which even the prison couldn''t contain - and allows us to look with them from their cell windows out into the world where hopes and dreams would be realised someday.

The New Menard Press Little Estuaries

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisIn Little Estuaries, Daniel Kramb goes in search for what’s fleeting between the shores. Amid a constantly shifting sense of what can be seen, sensed, experienced, the poet probes the estuary as sphere: an opening up, a possibility. Whittled down, like sea to stream, his poems emerge, in their own distinct form, estuary-shaped on the page. Intricate, at times playful, always open, these unassuming, small pieces reach beyond the confines, always returning to what’s undeniable, as body. Silt-smeared and salty, this is poetry not on landscape, but through it: formed not by what exists, but from what’s washed up within.

  • Chamber Music

    Double 9 Books Chamber Music

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisJames Joyce's book of poems titled Chamber Music was released by Elkin Mathews in May 1907. There were originally thirty-four love poems in the anthology, but two more were added before it was published (All day I hear the noise of waters and I hear an army charging upon the land). Although it is widely believed that the title refers to the sound of urine tinkling in a chamber pot, this is a later Joycean embellishment that gives an earthiness to a title that was initially proposed by his brother Stanislaus and that Joyce (by the time of publication) had come to dislike: The reason I dislike Chamber Music as a title is that it is too complacent, he admitted to Arthur Symons in 1906. I would prefer a title that criticized the work while avoiding outright trashing it. Chamber Music's poetry isn't at all racy or evocative of the sound of tinkling urine, in fact. The poems were well-received by critics despite poor sales (less than half of the original print run of 500 had been sold in the first year).
