  • Amberley Publishing Nailsworth and Woodchester Through Time

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisLying together in one of Stroud's five valleys, Nailsworth and Woodchester provide an interesting contrast with one another. As a parish, the former is only just over a century old, created from portions of Avening, Horsley and Minchinhampton, while Woodchester has pre-Conquest roots and is the site of the great Roman villa, with its celebrated Orpheus Mosaic. Both parishes possess many fine buildings and are home to thriving, vibrant communities. Using period and modern photographs, this book aims to highlight changes in Nailsworth and Woodchester over the last century or so. Matching images invite the reader to compare how landscape, architecture and street scenes have altered and to enjoy fascinating glimpses of Victorian and Edwardian people going about their daily lives.

    Amberley Publishing Norwich Through Time

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisNorwich Through Time contains 180 photographs of Norwich, of which 90 are old photographs. Some printed in a sepia tone and some printed in full colour. These photographs are printed alongside a contemporary full colour photograph which illustrates the same scene. The contrasting illustrations show how the area has changed and developed during the last 100 years. The photographs illustrate shops, schools, garages, churches, houses and street scenes, each photograph is captioned and the book has an introduction which gives a brief overview of the history of the town. As you browse through the photographs, you will notice the increase in the number of vehicles on the road, shops that once sold new goods are now estate agents or charity shops. Green fields have been transformed into industrial estates, houses or ring roads.

  • Amberley Publishing Chatham Through Time

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisChatham is a town that has been undergoing change for the last five hundred years. It all began with the arrival of the naval dockyard in the sixteenth century. From this, a town was created which began to grow with the rapidity of a Chatham built warship. The site of the former dockyard is still under development and in the town major changes are not only underway but others are in the pipeline and will include the Brook, the waterfront and the area of the railway station. What better time can there be for a book on Chatham that not only looks at the past but also the present? While many of the photographs show the town as it is today - many of those scenes will also be changing in the near future. This book attempts to capture this evolving town, and will be of interest to anyone who knows and loves this area.

  • Stonehenge: A History in Photographs

Historic England Stonehenge: A History in Photographs

Book SynopsisStonehenge is the world's most famous pre-historic monument and, since the middle of the 19th century, probably the most photographed. Using images from English Heritage's unique photographic archive (formerly known as the National Monuments Record), Stonehenge: A History in Photographs charts the last 150 years in the life of this extraordinary and iconic site. These largely unseen images touch on various moments in Stonehenge's history, from the leisurely tourism in the last years of Victoria's reign to the monument of today, a site visited each year by more than one million people from all over the world. This book is a celebration of Stonehenge, in fascinating and often very human images. The text is written by archaeologist and television presenter Julian Richards, someone with a genuine love of Stonehenge. This is a book for all who share a fascination with this magical monument. Book SynopsisFriday nights were bath nights. Immediately after tea we were given a good scrub with the brushes the girls used on the floor. No fancy smelling soaps, just carbolic and should this get into your eyes it really was painful. Then we were given a flannel nightshirt each. Some only just covered our knees because they had already been cut down to repair other nightshirts. Then we were lined up in front of the Matron who gave us a dose of brimstone and treacle then off to bed. Such was the fear and dread of ''ending one''s days in the workhouse'' that even in recent years older people could recall the feelings of horror that such a threat conjured up.That a system introduced to help the poor and a destitute could become such a reviled and feared institution is a mystery to most of us today but a study of it can repay with a better understanding of a broader social, political, economic and eve architectural history of Britain. Increasingly today little remain

  • Lost Cornwall from Magic Lantern Slides

Fonthill Media Ltd Lost Cornwall from Magic Lantern Slides

    2 in stock

Book SynopsisCornwall through Magic Lantern Slides is a quality book of 287 superb professional photographs of bygone Cornwall from the later years of Queen Victoria and through the reign of Edward VII. The book transports the reader back to the nostalgic, but hard times of our forefathers. The original photographs are all positives printed on glass of subjects varying from men at work underground in the Cornish mines to chocolate box views of Cornish harbours. Many images will have been made available commercially at the time of production whilst others are taken by private individuals for lectures at their local social evenings. Photographs of Rocks or cliffs at the time would have looked dramatic to the photographer, but to the present day viewer they may seem less interesting, so these are generally not included unless something else of interest is happening in the scene. The reader will find the variety of the subjects both fascinating and of great social interest. Logistic difficulties of the cumbersome, and technically difficult equipment is discussed. This is a book for anyone interested in Magic Lantern slides or the photographic, social and topographical history of Cornwall.

  • Saltash Through Time

    Amberley Publishing Saltash Through Time

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisSaltash has seen many changes over the years. The waterside area beside the River Tamar has been occupied for over a thousand years and was the home to fishermen plying their trade for much of that time. A ferry ran between Plymouth and Saltash for over 600 years before coming to an end when the Tamar Bridge was opened to traffic in 1961. Modern redevelopment also led to the clearance of many older buildings, changing the look of the area forever. A number of industries have also disappeared including quarrying, ship building and fishing. Gone too are the limekilns as well as the gasworks and the brass and iron foundries. The numerous tea gardens, the coal merchants and, of course, the ferry are now just things of the past. A hundred years ago, the water's edge was alive with activity. Fishing boats regularly called into Saltash and many barges took produce up and down the river.

  • Truro Through Time

    Amberley Publishing Truro Through Time

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisIn 1698 Celia Fiennes an intrepid traveler and relative of the Boscawen family rode into Truro on horseback and immediately loved it although she described it in her diary as 'a ruinated and disregarded place, formerly a great tradeing town'. In 1724 the author Daniel Defoe found Truro 'sadly declining as a port' and doubted whether it would ever recover so the fortunes of the town changed just as the inhabitants, buildings and roads altered over the years. In this book we see photographs that evoke memories of the Truro that once was and we can compare them with Truro today. Change is constantly with us and yet the heart of this graceful city remains little changed. Boscawen Street, Cathedral Lane, Georgian Lemon Street and our rivers are instantly recognisable and mean 'home' to Truronians wherever they may be.
