  • Cambridge University Press Why Dna

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisInformation is central to the evolution of biological complexity, a physical system relying on a continuous supply of energy. Biology provides superb examples of the consequent Darwinian selection of mechanisms for efficient energy utilisation. Genetic information, underpinned by the Watson-Crick base-pairing rules is largely encoded by DNA, a molecule uniquely adapted to its roles in information storage and utilisation. This volume addresses two fundamental questions. Firstly, what properties of the molecule have enabled it to become the predominant genetic material in the biological world today and secondly, to what extent have the informational properties of the molecule contributed to the expansion of biological diversity and the stability of ecosystems. The author argues that bringing these two seemingly unrelated topics together enables Schrödinger''s What is Life?, published before the structure of DNA was known, to be revisited and his ideas examined in the context of our current biological understanding.Trade Review'The essence of the book is in its title. The DNA structures and topology are described so clearly that the reader perceives these intricacies as pure evolutionary elegance, and understands WHY it is only in its balance of stability and agility that life could have started its journey. This book explains how DNA has become the fascinating prism, made of a fabric of complexity and information, into which the living reflects itself. My opinion is passionate because I have been thinking about the same problems for decades, and here I find many of the answers. Especially: what makes DNA so unique? It is a text that I keep reading over again.' Ernesto Di Mauro, IBPM, National Research Council, Rome'In What Is Life? Schrödinger conjectured that, in animate matter, order is derived from order, foreshadowing the discovery of DNA structure. Why DNA? is about this molecule and its dual information content - in linear genetic code and in thermodynamics of three-dimensional DNA structures. It addresses how DNA's intrinsic order led to complex, highly ordered living organisms, in a world that strives towards disorder. Why would DNA supplant RNA in carrying hereditary information during biological evolution? Why did multicellular organisms emerge, since natural selection favours the fittest, such as simple bacteria? What is complexity, and what has it to do with Bayesian logic? How do complexity, information and energy interrelate? This is a succinct discourse on Schrödinger's question, expanding from molecular interactions and genome cooperation to ecological systems and societal evolution. A must-read for biology scholars, and anyone interested in life's origins, biological evolution and the interface of biology and physics.' Georgi Muskhelishvili, Agricultural University of Georgia, TbilisiTable of ContentsAcknowledgements; Preface; 1. The perennial question; 2. The nature of information – information, complexity and entropy; 3. DNA – the molecule; 4. The evolution of biological complexity; 5. Cooperating genomes; 6. DNA, information and complexity; 7. Book SynopsisThis completely revised edition provides a synthesis of the forces that shaped the evolution of the human growth pattern, the biocultural factors that direct its expression, the intrinsic and extrinsic factors that regulate individual development, and the biomathematical approaches needed to analyze and interpret human growth. After covering the history, philosophy and biological principles of human development, the book turns to the evolution of the human life cycle. Later chapters explore the physiological, environmental and cultural reasons for population variation in growth, and the genetic and endocrine factors that regulate individual development. Using numerous historical and cultural examples, social-economic-political-economic forces are also discussed. A new chapter introduces controversial concepts of community effects and strategic growth adjustments, and the author then integrates all this information into a truly interactive biocultural model of human development. Book SynopsisThis well-established and acclaimed textbook introducing the rapidly growing field of nerve and muscle function has been completely revised and updated. Written with undergraduate students in mind, it begins with the fundamental principles demonstrated by the pioneering electrophysiological experiments on cell excitability. This leads to more challenging material recounting recent discoveries from applying modern biochemical, genetic, physiological and biophysical, experimental and mathematical analysis. The resulting interdisciplinary approach conveys a unified contemporary understanding of nerve and skeletal, cardiac and smooth muscle function at the molecular, cellular and systems levels. Emphasis on important strategic experiments throughout clarifies the basis for our current scientific views, highlights the excitement and challenge of biomedical discovery, and suggests directions for future advances. These fundamental ideas are then translated into discussions of related disease conditions and their clinical management. Now including colour illustrations, it is an invaluable text for students of physiology, neuroscience, cell biology and biophysics.Trade Review'Huang has taken on the mammoth task of bringing the book up-to-date and has succeeded in maintaining the enthusiastic and eminently readable approach of Keynes and Aidley, who created one of the greatest physiology books covering the crucial areas of nerve and muscle. The fascinating historical perspectives on the discovery of membrane potentials, the transmission of nerve impulses and their molecular basis are essential reading for students of medicine and physiology with a curiosity about scientific methods, and progress.' Michael A. Ferenczi, Imperial College London'...a beautifully written gem. It is clearly illustrated, and it makes one of the most difficult areas of biology completely accessible. It should find its way onto the bookshelves of electrophysiologists everywhere and any students who aspire to master one of the most exciting areas of modern biology.' Denis Noble, University of Oxford'This classic textbook on the fundamental biophysics and physiology of nerve and muscle remains an unparalleled source of knowledge that has served the scientific field for decades. Prof. Huang elegantly manages to update this edition with recent findings within this broad field continuing the excellence that characterizes this work.' Thomas Holm Pedersen, University of Aarhus, Denmark'Professor Christopher Huang has updated and significantly broadened the scope and the translational endpoints of the classical textbook of Integrative and Cell Physiology Keynes & Aidley's Nerve and Muscle. The result is a comprehensive, well planned, logically presented and extensively referenced monograph. Based on the text and supporting figures, it builds on the strengths of the parent textbook while also providing new in-depth coverage of recent advances in neurophysiology as well as skeletal and cardiac muscle electrophysiology and contractility. The internationally recognized research accomplishments of Professor Huang on key cell physiology mechanisms of the heart and skeletal muscle form the basis of very informative material concerning cardiac rhythm disturbances and some aspects of exercise physiology and aging. • Anthropometry: Types, Uses and Applications

Nova Science Publishers Inc Anthropometry: Types, Uses and Applications

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisIn this book, the science of anthropometry, which deals with measurements of human size, shape and proportion, is examined in the context of obesity and overweight, common problems in developed countries and developing countries alike. An estimated 39% of the world''s adult population were overweight and 13% were obese over the past 3 decades, and these problems can cause diseases like type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), cardiovascular diseases (CVD), and several cancers. While body mass index (BMI) is commonly used as a health risk phenotype, it has several limitations because BMI does not accurately depict different components of body composition and is therefore unable to predict the prognostic effect of individual tissues. Other anthropometric measurements, such as waist circumference (WC), waist to hip ratio (WHR), and waist to height ratio (WHtR) each have their advantages and disadvantages. As such, in Chapter 1, different novel anthropometric parameters and cardiovascular risk factors among obesity adults are compared and evaluated. Chapter 2 describes a study of children aged 0-12 years conducted in the Middle Senegal River Valley (MISOES) in 1957-1958. This study was based on representative samples of children in urban and rural areas and included measurements of weight, height, arm circumference, and more. These measurements were compared with American standards and showed an overwhelming anthropometric deficit compared with standards. This study is examined in the context of other studies conducted in the region as well as in connection with economic development in the valley. Chapter 3 describes the various methods of assessing body fat and their application for obese individuals to predict the risk of Coronary Heart Disease (CHD), and Chapter 4 reviews the effect of different modalities of physical exercise on anthropometric measurements and body composition in different populations of older adults.

Book SynopsisSeveral years have passed since the sequencing of the human genome and what might be called "the post-genomic era" has begun. Of course, there are many different genomes and the term "post-genomic" does not necessarily imply the human genome. However, it is the data encoded in the human genome that hold the promise to be of practical importance in a wide range of biomedical applications. The sequencing and preliminary annotations of the human genome provided an incredible amount of the raw, largely unprocessed information. Coupled with the millions of publications on human physiology already available in public databases, it is clear that certain informational strategies should be adopted for the retrieval, analysis and representation of these data. Among biological sciences, bioinformatics is a specific branch that deals with managing complexities in the biological information. However, the bioinformatics is in no way restricted to the compilation of large databases or elaboration of sophisticated software. The methods of bioinformatics can greatly assist the generation of productive hypotheses that allow subsequent experimental testing followed by confirmation or disapproval. The main idea behind the present volume is not worrying about the steadily growing amounts of biomedical information or about the relative quality of it. This volume, as well as the entire book series, is based on the purpose-oriented attitude: how to make a good use of this information in particular research projects.

Book SynopsisThe study of phenomena that occur during sleep has always aroused a great interest in various fields of human knowledge, both in religion and in philosophy, as well as in science. Hippocrates and Aristotle conducted different studies and observations on sleep and dreams, focusing on the changes that affect the state of consciousness between the waking and sleeping states. Freud even started from the observations and interpretation of dreams in the foundation of the psychoanalytic method. After the introduction of the electroencephalogram (EEG) by Hans Berger (1929), the beginning of modern sleep medicine began. Currently, the scientific literature in this field is very vast, gathering different aspects of many medical specialties, mainly including psychiatry, neurology, pneumology, cardiology, internal medicine, and others. Precisely because of this broad extension, it is not completely explorable by clinicians and is not always adequate for their needs.

Book SynopsisThe primary function of appetite is to control adequate energy intake in order to meet an organism''s metabolic requirements. The interplay between hunger, appetite stimulation and food intake is tightly regulated by the central nervous system and conditioned by numerous inherently biological as well as acquired social and cultural phenomena. Appetite is closely linked to individual behaviour, thereby affecting energy intake as well as qualitative food structure and represents a basis for possible therapeutic intervention in individuals with impaired appetite regulations. This book presents several perspectives on appetite regulation in humans and animal models. The importance of understanding altered appetite regulation in cancer is highlighted as well as the effects of exercise on appetite. Finally, this book also presents new research into the role of genetic variability in ghrelin in dietary composition.

Book SynopsisContractions of vertebrate skeletal and cardiac muscles are controlled by Ca2+ signalling through the troponin complex in the sarcomeres, which are the contractile machinery consisting of interactive myofilaments. Since the abundance of troponin sub-unit proteins in myocytes and their muscle-specific expression, troponin I (TnI) and troponin T (TnT) have been broadly applied as serum biomarkers for the clinical diagnosis of acute myocardial infarction and other heart and muscle injuries. Intensive research from protein structure to genetic diversity to post-translational modification and pathological mutations has comprehensively established the molecular structure of troponin. The advanced knowledge gained from basic research of troponin allows for a better understanding of the current methodology for troponin-based diagnostic applications. To help clinicians, diagnostic laboratory staff and methodology developers, this book provides comprehensive yet concise summaries of the current knowledge cover a broad range of topics including a detailed review of the structural features and adaptive modifications of troponin subunits and impacts on immunological detections; a comprehensive summary of the evolution of troponin assays; an evaluation of current assay platforms, quality specifications for cardiac troponin assays; the use of high-sensitivity cardiac troponin assays; electrochemical strategies for the detection of cardiac troponins; cardiac troponins in the evaluation of myocardial damage during and post percutaneous coronary interventions; troponin as markers of myocardial injury in trauma; and the significance of increased serum troponin in an acute stroke and other non-cardiac diseases. Contributed by experts in the field, this broad collection provides a unique reference for healthcare workers, medical students and research investigators who have an interest in troponin-based laboratory tests. Readers will not only acquire and in depth state-of-the-science understanding of troponin structure and diagnostic applications, but they will also be exposed to visions leading into future developments toward advancing troponin detection and improving clinical applications.

Book SynopsisBone mineral density (BMD) is a determinant of bone health. Phenotype, age, race, gender, activity level and overall health status all affect BMD. Recent research has shown that early pregnancy loss could be associated with bone mineral density. Reduced bone mass, bone density and consequently the pathological conditions, osteopenia and osteoporosis, represent significant health problems and contribute to disability, mortality, and reduced health related quality of life among older women and men. This book examines disorders that affect bone density, such as rickets and osteomalacia, and discusses screening and treatment options available for these and other bone disorders.
