Twin Palms Publishers Garry Winogrand: Winogrand Color
Book SynopsisRarely-seen color work from the preeminent master of postwar American street photography This monograph stands as a groundbreaking tribute to the early color work of renowned American photographer Garry Winogrand. While he is most recognized for his candid and lively black-and-white street photography, Winogrand's portfolio also includes an impressive collection of over 45,000 color slides captured between the early 1950s and the late 1960s. Using two cameras strapped to his chest—one loaded with color film and the other with black-and-white film—he extensively documented his surroundings between commercial assignments, developing and refining a distinct and progressively daring body of personal work. From the bustling streets of Manhattan to the shaded underside of Coney Island’s boardwalk to the expansive landscapes and open roads of the American West, Winogrand Color unveils a tender portrait of a version of the country that feels at once bygone and timeless. His snapshots of strangers exude an unparalleled sense of intimacy, offering poetic glimpses into everyday postwar America. Presenting 150 photographs selected from the archives at the Center for Creative Photography in Tucson, Arizona, this is the first monograph dedicated in full to Winogrand’s vivid color photography. Born and raised in the Bronx, Garry Winogrand (1928–84) was a highly influential American photographer who came into prominence for his trailblazing contributions to street photography. His keen eye for human emotions and his ability to freeze spontaneous moments immortalized the essence of American society. His work continues to inspire and shape the field, leaving a lasting impact on both his contemporaries and future generations of photographers.

Brill Selene's Two Faces: From 17th Century Drawings to Spacecraft Imaging
Book SynopsisIf any scientific object has over the course of human history aroused the fascination of both scientists and artists worldwide, it is beyond doubt the moon. The moon is also by far the most interesting celestial body when it comes to reflecting on the dualistic nature of photography as applied to the study of the universe. Against this background, Selene’s Two Faces sets out to look at the scientific purpose, aesthetic expression, and influence of early lunar drawings, maps and photographs, including spacecraft imaging. In its approach, Selene’s Two Faces is intermedial, intercultural and interdisciplinary. It brings together not only various media (photography, maps, engravings, lithographs, globes, texts), and cultures (from Europe, America and Asia), but also theoretical perspectives. See inside the book.Trade Review"Setting aside the specific subject of the Moon and its pictures, González’s collection provides an excellent example of how astronomical imaging can overstep the boundaries of traditionally understood history of science." Brill Pictorial Photography and the American West, 1900-1950: The Broad Movement
Book SynopsisThis book is an investigation of the widely overlooked photographic style of pictorialism in the American West between 1900 and 1950 and argues that western pictorialist photographers were regionalists that had their roots in the formidable photographic heritage of the nineteenth-century West. Driven by a wealth of textual and visual primary sources, the book addresses the West’s relationship with the eastern centers of art in the early century, the diversity of practitioners such as women, Japanese Americans, Indigenous Americans, western rural workers, etc., and the style’s final demise as it related to the modernism of Group F.64. Couched in the rhetoric of regionalism; it is a refreshing and innovative approach to an overlooked wealth of American cultural production.Table of ContentsAcknowledgments List of Figures Introduction 1 A Brief Introduction to American Pictorialism 2 Stieglitz Abandons Pictorialism 3 Pictorialism in the America West 4 The Broad Movement 5 A Note on the Images 6 Possibilities and Unalloyed Pleasures 1 The Broad Movement 1 The New Woman and the Origins of the Broad Movement 2 Rise of the Hobbyist-Amateur 3 The Photographic/Pictorialist Industry 3.1 Kodak 3.2 Photographic Journals and Publications 3.3 Photographic Technologies, Materials, and Techniques 3.4 National Organizations and Local Camera Clubs 3.5 Salons, Exhibitions, and Conventions and Postal Clubs, Interchanges, and Circulating Societies 4 Pictorialism and the Picturesque 2 Regional Pictorialism in the West 1 Cultural Regionalism 2 Artistic Regionalism 3 Western Pictorialist Photography 3.1 California Pictorialism 3.2 The West beyond California 3.3 Mythic West/“Provincial” West 3.4 Western Women’s Regionalism 3.5 Japonisme and West-Coast Japanese Pictorialists 3.6 Indigenous America 3 The End of Pictorialism 1 The Protracted Decline of Pictorialism 1.1 Embattled Pictorialism: Photography as Fine Art 1.2 Embattled Photography: Pictorialism versus Painting 1.3 Embattled Abroad: American versus European Pictorialism 1.4 Embattled Subject Matter 1.5 Embattled from Within: Internal Pictorialist Rhetoric 2 The Beginning of the End: Group f.64 2.1 Regional Modern 2.2 Attack and Counterattack 2.3 Expanded Photographic Practice: fsa and Social Documentary 2.4 Modernist Regionalism Epilogue 1 Erasing Pictorialism 2 From the Regional to the Global References Index

Whittles Publishing Untangling the Knot, Belugas and Bears: My
Book SynopsisThe beginning of the author's adventure with a camera - filming wildlife across the world for the BBC Natural History Unit and other major TV companies - began in 1978 when he joined the RSPB's film unit. Untangling the Knot gives an in-depth look into what is involved in capturing the sequences needed for a natural history film, using comprehensive diaries and over 200 photographs. Mike describes the stresses of international flying with 20 cases of film equipment, sometimes alone, to distant corners of the world. The hardships of living and working for weeks in remote regions, avoiding tropical diseases, the onslaught of forest insects, long hours of waiting from dawn to dusk, and of frustration and disappointment when the elements or circumstances conspired against him. There are times of great elation too, when animal behaviour never seen before is captured on film. Working with top biologists and highly-experienced pilots was an essential partnership in understanding the subject to be filmed, often in remote regions where the challenge was reaching the subject in rainforest canopies, on remote islands or in featureless arctic tundra. In a career spanning 35 years, several of the programmes in which he was involved have won major awards. He describes filming Attenborough in Paradise in New Guinea with Sir David Attenborough as a career highlight, where he filmed behaviour of Birds of Paradise that had never been seen before. His last programme, Jewelled Messengers was the fulfilment of an ambition to make the ultimate film on hummingbirds with producer Paul Reddish, using the latest high-speed, high-definition cameras, and which was shot mainly in Brazil and Ecuador. The story concludes when he realizes his dream of visiting the Ross Sea region of the Antarctic. Mike considers himself lucky to have worked in so many spectacular regions of the world and this book enables readers to travel with him and share his incredible experiences.

The darkroom process is spontaneous and consuming, layering light, texture and form to interact with photographic alchemy. Some of the images are drawn on after they have been printed with paint and marker. Because of Sells’ method of working, each outcome is unique.

Bloomsbury Publishing PLC Colour Films in Britain: The Eastmancolor
Book SynopsisThe story of Eastmancolor's arrival on the British filmmaking scene is one of intermittent trial and error, intense debate and speculation before gradual acceptance. This book traces the journey of its adoption in British Film and considers its lasting significance as one of the most important technical innovations in film history. Through original archival research and interviews with key figures within the industry, the authors examine the role of Eastmancolor in relation to key areas of British cinema since the 1950s; including its economic and structural histories, different studio and industrial strategies, and the wider aesthetic changes that took place with the mass adoption of colour. Their analysis of British cinema through the lens of colour produces new interpretations of key British film genres including social realism, historical and costume drama, science fiction, horror, crime, documentary and even sex films. They explore how colour communicated meaning in films ranging from the Carry On series to Monty Python's Life of Brian (1979), from Lawrence of Arabia (1962) to A Passage to India (1984), and from Goldfinger (1964) to 1984 (1984), and in the work of key directors and cinematographers of both popular and art cinema including Nicolas Roeg, Ken Russell, Ridley Scott, Peter Greenaway and Chris Menges.Trade ReviewRooted in detailed primary research into aesthetics, production practices, technologies and institutions, Colour Films in Britain, provides a comprehensive and illuminating consideration of the adoption, diffusion and popularization of colour in British cinema from the mid-1950s. -- Duncan Petrie, University of York, UKColour Films in Britain is a landmark study of the transition to colour that occurred in the 1960s and 1970s. No other book has yet tackled this transition with such depth, breadth and precision. The collaborative efforts of Sarah Street, Keith M.
