Book SynopsisMany photographers wish to capture stunning and memorable images of the natural world, yet the whole process can be a challenge. Not only does getting the perfect shot require a complex mixture of skill and luck, but there is little practical advice available on how to find wildlife to photograph. This unique book describes a straightforward system for how to successfully locate wildlife, the most difficult aspect of wildlife photography. The patience and persistence have to come from you, but equipped with the right fieldcraft there is far more chance of getting the results – and the special moments – you are looking for. Individual chapters offer guidance on how to photograph birds, mammals, butterflies and dragonflies, as well as reptiles and some of our more elusive species. The particularities of various habitat types are discussed, and there are tips on equipment, technical specifications and how to make a good portable hide. While sharing some of her most successful and beautiful images, the author also gives useful examples of when things didn’t quite work out – reflecting on how things could have been done differently to get a better outcome. With the help of this book you’ll soon be taking the photographs you’ve always dreamed of, sometimes.Trade ReviewThe biggest challenge for nature photographers everywhere is finding great examples of wildlife to take pictures of. In this book, Susan Young helps you understand the subtleties of various habitats to improve your chances of finding the birds, mammals, insects and reptiles that live there. There’s also useful advice on equipment and a guide to building a hide. -- Graeme Green * BBC Wildlife *Author Susan Young calls on a great deal of personal experience with wildlife, and there is good advice on how to get close enough to animals to take quality shots without disturbing or scaring them. * Amateur Photographer Magazine *This book is an easy read and is peppered with examples, both in photographs and text, to illustrate specifics for locating and photographing wildlife. The author holds nothing back and is willing to share her methods for achieving success in a straightforward manner. * Apogee Magazine *Wildlife Photography Fieldcraft fills an important gap in photography literature. It is a unique and much needed gem amongst the myriad available photography books. Overall, this book is perfect for both amateur and professional photographers wanting to increase their knowledge of British wildlife, and one that I thoroughly recommend. * The Mammal Society *Lots of books will tell you how to use your camera for composition and exposure, but this is one of the few to tell you how to be there. -- Conrad Obregon, Nikonians.org

Book SynopsisFor the first time of its invention, photography has been used to visualize events that are either too fast or too slow for the eye to perceive, or subjects that are outside the spectral range of the human eye. This book shows how you can photograph a range of subjects and see the world as never before. Written with clear and accessible text, it explores and suggests techniques that expose new images in new ways, and pushes the boundaries of the photographer's creative potential. Techniques include: ultraviolet (UV) and infrared (IR) photography; high speed and time-lapse photography; close-up, macro and photography with the aid of a microscope and finally, photography using polarized light. Most of the techniques are accessible to all photographers using readily available equipment (UV and IR will require some specialist items), and have been relatively unexplored so give the adventurous photographer great potential to experiment and produce unique images.

Book SynopsisLegendary stills photographer Keith Hamshere reveals the stories from his remarkable career alongside his iconic photography, featuring some of Hollywood?s biggest movies ? from Indiana Jones to Star Wars to James Bond Keith Hamshere started his entertainment career as a child actor after winning a junior TV talent competition, which in turn led to a nine-month stint working with Max Bygraves on Singing Down the Lane at the London Palladium. Alas, child actors do eventually grow up, and keen to add a second string to his employment chances, Keith developed his interest in photography, which resulted in him becoming a society photographer at the heart of Swinging London, and in particular working for Baron Studios in the 1960s. When In Search of the Castaways unit photographer Johnny Jay began working on a new film directed by Stanley Kubrick in the mid-1960s, he realized he had a mammoth assignment ahead and needed a reliable assistant. Recalling Keith?s fascination with photography and his growing popularity, he asked his young friend if he would be interested in helping out on 2001: A Space Odyssey. Keith did not need to think about his answer, and in fact spent the next two years on the production learning his craft, earning the fond respect of Kubrick, and was soon trusted to run the photographic department, shooting large format images for animation and special effects ? all done for real, in camera, long before CGI was even heard of. Following his stellar work on 2001, Keith went on to become an established stills photographer and was in great demand on such titles as Battle of Britain, Barry Lyndon, Young Winston and Rosebud, before embarking on the first of eight James Bond assignments, The Spy Who Loved Me. Along with his Bond films ? three with Roger Moore, both of Timothy Dalton?s and all four of Pierce Brosnan?s adventures ? Keith was also asked to work on other legendary franchises: with Steven Spielberg on Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom; George Lucas on the three Stars Wars prequels; Superman II and III, along with other Hollywood blockbusters such as Clash of the Titans, Willow, Man on Fire, Patriot Games, Shadowlands, The Mummy, Spy Game and, shortly before retiring, Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation. Keith has helped create some of the most iconic images from some of the biggest movies ever made. He eagerly embraced innovative technology and was one of the first unit photographers to adapt to the digital age. He also pioneered in ?Virtual Reality? and developed and produced 360-degree virtual movie sets, which provided amazing interactive content for film studio executives. In Life Through an Aperture, Keith Hamshere shares his fascinating tales of rubbing shoulders with the biggest names in Hollywood, alongside with his incredible images.

  • England's Motoring Heritage from the Air

Historic England England's Motoring Heritage from the Air

    5 in stock

Book SynopsisThe arrival of aerial photography came at a particularly significant moment in terms of the visual appearance of England. This selection of photographs makes use of the Aerofilms collection, acquired by English Heritage in 2007 and subsequently digitised and made available on the Britain from Above website. When Aerofilms fliers first went up in the skies in 1919, they captured a country that, with the obvious exception of some large scale structures such as aircraft hangers and munitions factories, had more or less been preserved in aspic in 1914. What we are looking at in many of the earliest photographs in this book is essentially Edwardian England, with towns and villages generally quite compact, with fields reaching almost up to the High Streets in many cases, and little sign of the sprawl that was to engulf them in the 1920s and 30s. The streets of many towns, especially the seaside resorts that provided the aerial photographers with many of their earliest subjects, have an orderly, almost pristine appearance to them, with the Victorian and Edwardian houses undisturbed by any out of place redevelopment. The purpose of this book is to show just how radically that position changed over the ensuing half century. We trace the outward expansion of places brought about by the availability of the car: the new suburbs and ribbon development. We see how new arterial roads came into being to meet the needs of motor transport and how the centre of cities start to be rebuilt to accommodate it. We witness the growth of sprawl around road junctions on the edge of built up areas and the arrival of new types of building there to service both cars and people: the filling station, the roadhouse. We see how the car encouraged more people to go further afield for sport and pleasure: to the seaside, the races or to new forms of attractions such as the amusement park in the country. And we see how public transport changes over the period from trams to buses with the advent of new facilities such as bus stations. The scale of traffic congestion becomes apparent by the late 1930s. In addition, the impact on the landscape of large motor factories and provision for motor sport is made clear.Trade ReviewIt's a lovely b/w trip back in time and beautifully set out, letting the images tell the story.Classic MotoringThis is a novel as well as instructive look at a previously neglected area of English motoring history, and is highly recommended. The AutomobileThis is an excellent glimpse into the unique archive that is the Aerofilms Collection and I commend it to anyone interested in our motoring heritage. • Aerofilms: A history of Britain from above

Historic England Aerofilms: A history of Britain from above

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisAerofilms Ltd was born on 9 May 1919. An unprecedented business venture, it hoped to marry the still fledgling technology of powered flight to the discipline of photography. Its founders were Claude Grahame-White, an internationally-famous English aviation pioneer, and Francis Lewis Wills, a trained architect who had flown as an observer for the Royal Naval Air Service during the First World War. Together they embarked on a distinctively British tale of derring-do. From developing photographic glass plates in a hotel bathroom at the London Flying Club in Hendon, to producing many thousands of aerial images every year, they took a tool which had first been used for military intelligence, and repackaged it for the mass market. As a result, Aerofilms lived through and recorded one of the most tumultuous periods in British history. After surviving the worldwide economic crash of the Great Depression in the 1930s, and serving their country at the request of Winston Churchill during the Second World War, they were still on hand to help shape the Britain of the future, capturing the major reconstruction projects of the 1940s and 50s. Aerofilms: A History of Britain From Above draws on thousands of images, including many that are rare or previously unseen, to present a vivid picture of the nation in the first half of the twentieth century. Following the company’s enigmatic founders, daredevil pilots, skilled photographers and innovative advertisers, it explores how they manufactured and sold a potent sense of place and identity to the British people. The story of Aerofilms – the men and women behind the company and the photographs that they produced – is a story of innovation, entrepreneurial spirit, war, marketing and the making of ‘Brand Britain’. The scale and detail of rapid social, architectural and industrial changes are shown through pictures of cities, towns, coastal areas, industrial scenes and breathtaking landscapes.Christy Lawrence, Journal of the Islington Archaeology & History SocietyThe selected images - from St Paul's Cathedral, its Baroque majesty captured as never before, to the South Bank in 1950, still a building site - are everything you'd expect: exciting, nostalgic and informative ... Many of the pictures can now be seen online via the dedicated website britainfromabove.org.uk - but I'd recommend reading the book too, for it really makes for a great story.Jack Watkins, OPTIMAMAGAZINEThis wonderfully written book starts with a broad insight into the world of early aviation. Historic England England's Maritime Heritage from the Air

Book SynopsisEngland has a long and involved relationship with the sea. It has provided a final line of defence against invasion, the route over which the country’s global trade has travelled, the source of a bountiful harvest of fish and seafood that has sustained the population, the essential links in the empire that saw Britain emerge as the world’s first ‘Great Power’, and, more recently, it has fostered the leisure industry. For many, the sea was to provide their final view of their homeland as emigration took them to far-flung corners of the world, while for others, perhaps fleeing religious or political persecution, the sea offered them a route to safety. For almost a century the photographers from the Aerofilms company recorded Britain from the air. Alongside the photographs taken of the great castles and abbeys of the country, the views also recorded industrial and commercial activity – including the docks and ports that were an essential part in maintaining Britain’s place in the world. In this book, Peter Waller has delved through the collection of Aerofilms photographs held by Historic England to explore the country’s maritime heritage. Selecting 150 images, the author looks at how the docks and ports have evolved since the years immediately after World War I, how traditional patterns of trade have changed, how the Royal Navy has shrunk and how the leisure industry has come to dominate.Trade Review'This volume is a worthy example of a Historic England publication. Historic England England's Railway Heritage from the Air

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisFor almost a century, from its inception in the years immediately after World War I, the Aerofilms company recorded the changing face of England from the air. At the start of the era, the railway was still the predominant form of transport, with a network of main, secondary and branch lines that stretched to virtually every corner of the realm. As the 20th century progressed, however, this dominance declined as the private motorcar and the lorry increasingly became the preferred mode of transport. The early railway builders — such as the London & Birmingham — had invested much in creating impressive stations for this new and revolutionary form of transport and, during the 19th century, many of the country’s leading architects undertook commissions on behalf of the burgeoning railway industry. After World War II, however, many of these buildings were were swept away. The Aerofilms collection provides a unique vantage point to explore the country’s railway heritage. It is only from the air that it is possible to appreciate fully how much the railway came to dominate the landscape; even in relatively small country towns, the railway station with its platforms and goods yard was significant. Add to this the construction of tunnels and viaducts, and the railway can be said to have shaped much of the landscape of modern England. Drawing upon some 150 images from the collection, Peter Waller explores various aspects of England’s unique railway heritage: from the major stations in cities like Birmingham to the humble goods yard and signal box.Trade Review'Perhaps even more than the motoring and maritime books that preceded it, the railway volume has a full text by this highly experienced author at each right-hand page opposite the beautifully printed images. It adds up to an account of the country’s topography, providing ample evidence of how the Victorians reshaped England both in town and country.' Book SynopsisThe beginning of the author's adventure with a camera - filming wildlife across the world for the BBC Natural History Unit and other major TV companies - began in 1978 when he joined the RSPB's film unit. Untangling the Knot gives an in-depth look into what is involved in capturing the sequences needed for a natural history film, using comprehensive diaries and over 200 photographs. Mike describes the stresses of international flying with 20 cases of film equipment, sometimes alone, to distant corners of the world. The hardships of living and working for weeks in remote regions, avoiding tropical diseases, the onslaught of forest insects, long hours of waiting from dawn to dusk, and of frustration and disappointment when the elements or circumstances conspired against him. There are times of great elation too, when animal behaviour never seen before is captured on film. Working with top biologists and highly-experienced pilots was an essential partnership in understanding the subject to be filmed, often in remote regions where the challenge was reaching the subject in rainforest canopies, on remote islands or in featureless arctic tundra. In a career spanning 35 years, several of the programmes in which he was involved have won major awards. He describes filming Attenborough in Paradise in New Guinea with Sir David Attenborough as a career highlight, where he filmed behaviour of Birds of Paradise that had never been seen before. His last programme, Jewelled Messengers was the fulfilment of an ambition to make the ultimate film on hummingbirds with producer Paul Reddish, using the latest high-speed, high-definition cameras, and which was shot mainly in Brazil and Ecuador. The story concludes when he realizes his dream of visiting the Ross Sea region of the Antarctic. Mike considers himself lucky to have worked in so many spectacular regions of the world and this book enables readers to travel with him and share his incredible experiences.

Historic Environment Scotland Scotland's Landscapes: The National Collection of

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisAs the glaciers of the last Ice Age receded, humans ventured into the far north, exploring a wild, fertile territory. Nomadic hunter-gatherers at first, they made the decision to stay for good - to farm and to build. The landscapes they lived on were remarkable in their diversity. Vast forests of pine and birch ran through one of the world's oldest mountain ranges - once as high as the Himalayas but over millennia scoured and compressed by sheets of ice a mile thick. On hundreds of islands around a saw-edged coastline, communities flourished, linked to each other and the wider world by the sea, the transport superhighway of ancient times. It was a place of challenges and opportunity. A place we know today as Scotland. Over the past 10,000 years, every inch of Scotland - whether remote hilltop, fertile floodplain, or storm-lashed coastline - has been shaped, changed and moulded by its people. No part of the land is without its human story. From Orkney's immaculately preserved Neolithic villages to Highland glens stripped of nineteenth century settlements, from a Skye peninsula converted to an ingenious Viking shipyard, to a sheer Hebridean clifftop used as the site of a spectacular lighthouse, Scotland's history is written into its landscapes in vivid detail. Scotland's Landscapes tells the enduring story of this interaction between man and his environment. Stunning new imagery from the National Collection of Aerial Photography comes together to build up a picture of a dramatic terrain forged by thousands of years of incredible change. These are Scotland's landscapes as you have never seen or understood them before.Trade Review'Scotland's Landscapes is full to bursting with truly breathtaking scenes from the country's every corner - the various items from the National Collection of Aerial Photography assembled here show that Scotland may have been built and roughly shaped by geomorphological processes, but the crucial touches were bestowed by human history.' * The Scotsman *'A visually stunning book from the team which brought us Victorian Scotland, Above Scotland, and Above Scotland - Cities. They have produced another cracking coffee table book over which devotees of Scotland can pore for hours ... A must-have for those who would like to know Scotland better.' * Scottish Field *'It is easy to understand the fascination of aerial photographs. Firstly, not everybody can take them. Secondly, not everybody gets to fly over the Highlands and Islands on a cloudless day and see them from above. And thirdly, they can be absolutely heartstopping. There is a photograph from the sky of Vatersay in Scotland's Landscapes. I would almost sooner look at this photo than be there.' -- Roger Hutchinson, author of Calum's Road

Some of the images are drawn on after they have been printed with paint and marker. Because of Sells’ method of working, each outcome is unique.

Bloomsbury Publishing PLC Colour Films in Britain: The Eastmancolor

Book SynopsisThe story of Eastmancolor's arrival on the British filmmaking scene is one of intermittent trial and error, intense debate and speculation before gradual acceptance. This book traces the journey of its adoption in British Film and considers its lasting significance as one of the most important technical innovations in film history. Through original archival research and interviews with key figures within the industry, the authors examine the role of Eastmancolor in relation to key areas of British cinema since the 1950s; including its economic and structural histories, different studio and industrial strategies, and the wider aesthetic changes that took place with the mass adoption of colour. Their analysis of British cinema through the lens of colour produces new interpretations of key British film genres including social realism, historical and costume drama, science fiction, horror, crime, documentary and even sex films. They explore how colour communicated meaning in films ranging from the Carry On series to Monty Python's Life of Brian (1979), from Lawrence of Arabia (1962) to A Passage to India (1984), and from Goldfinger (1964) to 1984 (1984), and in the work of key directors and cinematographers of both popular and art cinema including Nicolas Roeg, Ken Russell, Ridley Scott, Peter Greenaway and Chris Menges.Trade ReviewRooted in detailed primary research into aesthetics, production practices, technologies and institutions, Colour Films in Britain, provides a comprehensive and illuminating consideration of the adoption, diffusion and popularization of colour in British cinema from the mid-1950s. -- Duncan Petrie, University of York, UKColour Films in Britain is a landmark study of the transition to colour that occurred in the 1960s and 1970s. No other book has yet tackled this transition with such depth, breadth and precision. The collaborative efforts of Sarah Street, Keith M. Book Synopsis"A little gem of a book chronicling that most gullible of all species, the human being" - Craig Brown, Books of the Year 2019, Mail on Sunday "Dafydd Jones has focused on one of the most dominant elements of the social life of our times - how the smartphone has taken us all over. It is a timely and rather sobering look at this phenomenon, done with his usual eloquence as a photographer." - Martin Parr. Almost everyone uses a smartphone, and most of us are addicted. In this book, photographer Dafydd Jones shows us just how pervasive our screen addiction has become. In almost every social situation, he shows how the smartphone has killed conversation and changed the way we look at the world. 'In the eighties and nineties', says Jones, 'when I photographed young people at parties or balls, I'd find them chatting each other up, or smooching in corners. Now I see them sneaking looks on their iPhones, checking on their Instagram feeds, or whatever it is they're hooked on. They hardly talk to each other, or make eye contact at all. And it's not just a generational thing - it afflicts the oldies too. Who knows what impact it's having in the bedroom. It's probably a race to see what will wipe out humanity first - global climate change or screen-induced sexual indifference.'Trade Review"Dafydd Jones has focused on one of the most dominant elements of the social life of our times - how the smartphone has taken us all over.
