    Out of stock

Book SynopsisCamera trapping is a powerful and now widely used tool in scientific research on wildlife ecology and management. It provides a unique opportunity for collecting knowledge, investigating the presence of animals, or recording and studying behaviour. Its visual nature makes it easy to successfully convey findings to a wide audience. This book provides a much-needed guide to the sound use of camera trapping for the most common ecological applications to wildlife research. Each phase involved in the use of camera trapping is covered: - Selecting the right camera type - Set-up and field deployment of your camera trap - Defining the sampling design: presence/absence, species inventory, abundance; occupancy at species level; capture-mark-recapture for density estimation; behavioural studies; community-level analysis - Data storage, management and analysis for your research topic, with illustrative examples for using R and Excel - Using camera trapping for monitoring, conservation and public engagement. Each chapter in this edited volume is essential reading for students, scientists, ecologists, educators and professionals involved in wildlife research or management.Trade Review...a thorough, concise handbook on how to design and conduct a study involving camera traps. It would be very useful for both under- and post-graduates and for those, like me, who are new to the subject, so I thoroughly recommend it for a university library and for anyone who is considering using camera traps as a component of a study. -- Siân Waters, Barbary Macaque Awareness & Conservation * Primate Eye *If you are surveying in a systematic way through trail cameras you will need to structure the sampling and analyse the results in methodical ways. It is here that a recent book from Pelagic Publishing, Camera Trapping for Wildlife Research, provides much use. With a scholarly approach and abundant references, the book has detailed advice on camera trapping for faunal inventories, occupancy studies, capture-recapture methods, and behavioural studies. The book excels in its detail on survey design, sampling design, and data management. There is an extended case study of Eurasian lynx abundance and density estimation in the NW Swiss Alps, while the behavioural studies section looks at Eurasian lynx scent marking as well as the tree rubbing behaviour of brown bears. -- Rick Minter * ECOS *An in-depth overview of the logistics of studies that use camera traps and provides numerous real-world examples of analyzing data collected by camera traps using contemporary approaches. I believe that the book is a must for wildlife researchers considering the use of camera traps. -- Adam Duarte, Department of Fisheries and Wildlife, Oregon State University * Journal of Wildlife Management *It is well-written, and its few images are well chosen to illustrate and clarify relevant concepts. The structure is sensible, taking the reader from introductory chapters about camera types, deployment and survey design through to more in-depth chapters describing how this information can be analysed and interpreted. -- Mark Wilson * BTO About Birds *As Professor Luigi Boitani states in his foreword, "This book is exactly what all field biologists need to have to learn about the current state of development of the technique". Based on decades of direct experience, well before the arrival of the modern digital camera trap, the book covers almost all the facets of using "photographic trapping" to obtain data on wildlife. The entire text is written with a direct approach, taking into account the real-world problems (and their solutions, that the Authors devised in several years of practice) occurring to anyone using camera trapping, from trapping scheme design to data analysis, not excluding new developments such as large-scale monitoring and citizen science. The impressive, thorough coverage of so many different topics has been achieved thanks to the active participation of other contributors (Jorge A. Ahumada, Eric Fergus, Danilo Foresti, Johanna Hurtado Astaiza, James MacCarthy, Paul Meek, Badru Mugerwa, Timothy G. O'Brien, Daniel Spitale and Simone Tenan, to name a few), that shared their direct experience in the field. Notwithstanding the practical approach, in each case (and in particiular in the chapters dealing with experimental design and data analysis applications) the theoretical background is just there, briefly recapitulated in a way useful to beginners as an introduction to more in-depth references, but also useful to the expert, as a beneficial refresher. * Hystrix - Italian Journal of Mammalogy *Table of Contents1. Book SynopsisSince the advent of the camera, there have been photographers whose mission is to record and interpret the public sphere in all its aspects. The work of the greats such as Eugene Atget and Henri Cartier-Bresson has inspired generations of photographers to wander public spaces, camera in hand, searching for meaningful moments in time. Success requires the street photographer to be proficient with their equipment, to be constantly aware of their surroundings, and to have a keen eye. Quick reflexes and self-confidence are essential: Street photographers know from experience that hesitation or procrastination could mean missing a once-in-a-lifetime shot. In this book, Gordon Lewis helps readers understand and conquer the challenging yet rewarding world of street photography. The book includes discussions of why photographers are drawn to street photography, the different styles of street photography, and what makes a great street photograph. Lewis then goes on to explore how the choice of location can change a photographer's approach to image capture: from city streets to fairs to beaches, Lewis discusses the impact different environments have on the process of street photography.Another crucial element to becoming a good street photographer is learning to travel light, with minimal equipment. Lewis gives readers practical advice on everything from cameras and lenses to camera bags and clothing. Lewis also delves into the techniques and approaches that will help novices master the art of street photography. Whether your style is to engage your subjects or to remain unnoticed and take candid portraits, Lewis offers ideas on how to capture fascinating moments in time: a gesture, expression, or composition that may exist for only a fraction of a second, but can leave a lasting impression of the wonders, challenges, and absurdities of modern life.

  • Remote Access: Small Public Libraries in Arkansas

University of Arkansas Press Remote Access: Small Public Libraries in Arkansas

    2 in stock

Book SynopsisWith their cameras and notebooks in hand, photographers Sabine Schmidt and Don House embarked on an ambitious project to document the libraries committed to serving Arkansas’s smallest communities. Remote Access is the culmination of this fascinating three-year effort, which took the artists to every region of their home state. Schmidt’s carefully constructed color images of libraries and the communities they serve and House’s rich black-and-white portraits of library patrons and staff shine alongside the authors’ observational essays about their experiences. The pages here come alive with a deep connection to Arkansas’s history and culture as we accompany the authors on visits to a section of the Trail of Tears near Parkin, to the site of the tragic 1959 fire at the Arkansas Negro Boys’ Industrial School in Wrightsville, and to Maya Angelou's childhood school in Stamps, among many other significant destinations. Through this testament to the essential role of libraries in the twenty-first century, Schmidt and House have created a clear-eyed portrait of modern rural life, delving into issues of race, politics, gender, and isolation as they document the remarkable hard work and generosity put forth in community efforts to sustain local libraries.Table of Contents Series Editor's Preface PREFACE: A Word About Librarians INTRODUCTION: Walking to Fayetteville: One True Photograph • ROBERT COCHRAN PROLOGUE: The Guidance of Strangers • SABINE SCHMIDT 1. Book Synopsis"Some people's photography is an art. Mine is not. If they happen to be exhibited in a gallery or a museum, that's fine. But that's not why I do them. I'm a gun for hire," Helmut Newton told Newsweek in 2004. This prosaic proclamation from one of the 20th century's most celebrated photographers may be perceived as surprising. Still it firmly positions Newton as the no-frills image-maker that he was. His work is so powerful and striking, that it defies categorization. In refusing to call his work "art," Newton leaves us free to do so. Judging from the amount of museum and gallery shows that have featured his work, it is clear that the option has been widely exercised. A Gun for Hire brings together a selection of Newton's fashion catalog work from the early 1960s to 2003 including campaigns for BiBA (the first fashion catalog in 1962), Chanel, Yves Saint Laurent, Versace, Thierry Mugler, Blumarine, Villeroy & Boch and Absolut Vodka, as well as his last editorial photographs for US and Italian Vogue—encompassing the body of work he made as a "gun for hire." With an introduction by Matthias Harder and statements by Pierre Bergé, Tom Ford, Josephine Hart, June Newton, and Anna Wintour. Trade Review“TASCHEN has brought out [Newton’s] savvy A Gun for Hire. Originally published in 2005, the book collects even more of Newton’s work for catalogues, magazines, and advertising, from Biba, Chanel, and Versace to Absolut Vodka… be warned, this is not Newton at his best, but his patented, deliberately provocative mix of class and cheese, with no pretense to high art, is hard to resist. The photographer is enjoying himself; why not join him?” * Vince Aletti for Photograph *“The legendary, provocative photographer gets a gorgeous TASCHEN tome dedicated to his career. A re-released edition, this time revised by the Helmut Newton Foundation, is brilliant.” * i-D *"This amazing collection of images perfectly reflects his attitude." * Harpers Bazaar *“A Gun For Hire, named for what Helmut Newton once called himself, includes some of his best editorial work for fashion houses from Biba in the 1960s to Thierry Mugler and Versace campaigns in the 1980s and 1990s, as well as Newton’s last work for Vogue.” * Vogue *“Hasn’t just about everyone tried to copy Newton, but only the ‘master’ himself managed to handle sex and elegance in such a casual, yet cool and calculated way.” * Stern *

Taschen GmbH The adidas Archive. The Footwear Collection

    Out of stock

Book Synopsis100 years ago the brothers Adolf ("Adi") and Rudolf Dassler made their first pair of sports shoes. Hundreds of groundbreaking designs, epic moments, and star-studded collabs later, this book presents the first visual review of the adidas shoe through more than 350 models including never-before-seen prototypes and one-of-a-kind originals. To further develop and tailor his products to athletes’ specific needs, Dassler asked them to return their worn footwear when no longer needed, with all the shoes eventually ending up in his attic (to this day, many athletes return their shoes to adidas, often as a thank you after winning a title or breaking a world record). This collection now makes up the "adidas archive", one of the largest, if not the largest archive of any sports goods manufacturer in the world—which photographers Christian Habermeier and Sebastian Jäger have been visually documenting in extreme detail for years. Shot using the highest reproduction techniques, these images reveal the fine details as much as the stains, the tears, the repair tape, the grass smudges, the faded autographs. It’s all here, unmanipulated and captured in extremely high resolution—and with it comes to light the personal stories of each individual wearer. We encounter the shoes worn by West Germany’s football team during its “miraculous” 1954 World Cup win and those worn by Kathrine Switzer when she ran the Boston Marathon in 1967, before women were officially allowed to compete; custom models for stars from Madonna to Lionel Messi; collabs with the likes of Pharrell Williams, Raf Simons, Stella McCartney, Parley for the Oceans or Yohji Yamamoto; as well as the brand’s trailblazing techniques and materials, like its pioneering use of plastic waste that is intercepted from beaches and coastal communities. With a foreword by designer Jacques Chassaing and expert texts, each picture tells us the why and the how, but also conveys the driving force behind adidas. What we discover goes beyond mere design; in the end, these are just shoes, worn out by their users who have loved them—but they are also first-hand witnesses of our sports, design, and culture history, from the beginnings of the Dassler brothers and the founding of adidas until today.Trade Review“The smudges, the stains, the tears, the history and all 350 models feature in extremely high detail in this extraordinary tribute to this remarkable brand.” * Forbes *“A must for lovers of the footwear brand.” * GQ *“This book tells you everything you ever wanted to know about Adidas sneakers.” * highsnobiety.com *“A mecca for sneakerheads.” * robbreport.com *

Collaborating with Louis Vuitton nearly two decades ago, Pharrell was the first to have his designs integrated into the haute joaillerie of the great maisons. His innovative team-ups continue through to the present day, most memorably with Tiffany and Chanel, and the watchmaker Richard Mille. The most extravagant of these chains, rings, and pendants—crafted in precious metals and studded with gems—are as much a part of Pharrell’s musical performance as they are of his personal style. It’s been a decade and a half since his designs were first integrated into one of Louis Vuitton’s jewelry collections, and in Pharrell: Carbon, Pressure & Time: A Book of Jewels, he discusses the evolution of jewelry in hip-hop culture and his own custom design process in conversations with Tyler, the Creator, Lorraine Schwartz, Jacob & Co.’s Jacob Arabo, and more. • Walter Niedermayr: Transformations

    Silvana Walter Niedermayr: Transformations

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisThis book covers the last 20 years of artistic research by one of the leading contemporary Italian photographers: Walter Niedermayr. Through the recurring themes of his work such as Alpine landscapes, architecture and the relationship between public and private spaces, the artist’s interest in investigating places not only from a geographical but also from a social point of view is highlighted. Although in continuity with the legacy of the Italian photographic tradition, which views the landscape as the key to interpreting society, Niedermayr’s visual research is significant in terms of its ability to reinterpret this subject and renew it from both a conceptual and a formal point of view. For the South Tyrolean photographer, physical space today cannot be approached with an exclusively documentary intention, but as the pivot of a transformative relationship between ecology, architecture and society. In some of the works in the Alpine Landschaften (Alpine Landscapes) series, for example, the presence of man in the depiction of the landscape is interpreted as a parameter for measuring the proportions of Alpine panoramas, and at the same time as a political yardstick for his intervention in the metamorphosis of the natural equilibrium. This topic is also underlined in works such as Portraits, where the snow cannons filmed during the summer season – and thus inactive – become ambiguous presences residing in the landscape. Text in English and Italian.

Book SynopsisIn 1942, Bill Manbo and his family were forced from their Hollywood home into a Japanese American internment in Wyoming. While there, Manbo documented his surroundings using Kodachrome film. Colors of Confinement showcases sixty-five stunning images from this extremely rare collection of photographs.Trade Review“Injustice, in Kodachrome.” - The New York Times“Sheds new light on life in Wyoming's Heart Mountain internment camp. . . . Disarming. . . . [Manbo's] images show movement and smiles caught in a moment. The people do not perform because of his camera but in spite of it.” - Casper Star-Tribune“These images offer readers glimpses of the internment that are in vivid color and, unlike government- sanctioned photos, candid and earnest. . . .Highly recommended. All levels/libraries.” - Choice“[A] provocative and noteworthy collection. . . . [with] unquestionable cultural and historical significance.” - Publishers Weekly“A rare insider's view of daily life in [Japanese-American internment] camps.” - Durham Herald Sun“These portraits provide a stark reminder that the families of Heart Mountain were prisoners of war.” - NPR Online“The strength of this title is the photography: Manbo documents a people who rose above persecution and injustice to carry on traditions and form a community in a barren landscape. Anyone interested in documentary photography and American social and cultural history will appreciate this book. Highly recommended.” - Library Journal starred review“The narratives and scholarly essays combine with the photos to forge a powerful statement. As humans we see the world in color, so the Kodachrome images convey the circumstances, as we would experience them if we were there. This level of reality is something that existing black and white camp photos cannot duplicate.” - American Studies Journal“Muller recognized this power of color photography to revive the past and has created a book that presents the internee experience through a modern lens. Just as Manbo's slides were miraculously preserved (in a box in his son's garage), Muller's compilation will help preserve our collective memory of the internment experience.” - Hyphen: Asian America Unabridged“Stunning.” - Huffington Post“The collection of pictures [Manbo] took there. . . represent a singular view of internment, all executed in color.” - Los Angeles Times “Poignant images of pickup baseball, judo matches, parades, and other daily life in a Wyoming internment camp for Japanese Americans during World War II.” - Military History Quarterly“Showcas[es] 65 color images from [Bill Manbo's] rare collection. . . . Each of the essays helps the reader look at the photographs from a different perspective.” - Carolina Law“The photographs give a haunting account of what life was like for Japanese descents.” - Daily Mail Online“This is a testament to the incredible power of photography. Even one frame can change the tide of public opinion because photography has the power to add layers to our understanding of how events transpired and how people were affected.” - Washington Post“These are not pictures of horrors of confinement but rather photos that show how the Japanese made lives for themselves.” - Denver Post“This volume is at once a wonderful and rare addition . . . to the existing images of the Nikkei experience while incarcerated during World War II.” - Nichi Bei Weekly

Bloomsbury Publishing PLC Colour Films in Britain: The Eastmancolor

Book SynopsisThe story of Eastmancolor's arrival on the British filmmaking scene is one of intermittent trial and error, intense debate and speculation before gradual acceptance. This book traces the journey of its adoption in British Film and considers its lasting significance as one of the most important technical innovations in film history. Through original archival research and interviews with key figures within the industry, the authors examine the role of Eastmancolor in relation to key areas of British cinema since the 1950s; including its economic and structural histories, different studio and industrial strategies, and the wider aesthetic changes that took place with the mass adoption of colour. Their analysis of British cinema through the lens of colour produces new interpretations of key British film genres including social realism, historical and costume drama, science fiction, horror, crime, documentary and even sex films. They explore how colour communicated meaning in films ranging from the Carry On series to Monty Python's Life of Brian (1979), from Lawrence of Arabia (1962) to A Passage to India (1984), and from Goldfinger (1964) to 1984 (1984), and in the work of key directors and cinematographers of both popular and art cinema including Nicolas Roeg, Ken Russell, Ridley Scott, Peter Greenaway and Chris Menges.Trade ReviewRooted in detailed primary research into aesthetics, production practices, technologies and institutions, Colour Films in Britain, provides a comprehensive and illuminating consideration of the adoption, diffusion and popularization of colour in British cinema from the mid-1950s. -- Duncan Petrie, University of York, UKColour Films in Britain is a landmark study of the transition to colour that occurred in the 1960s and 1970s. No other book has yet tackled this transition with such depth, breadth and precision. The collaborative efforts of Sarah Street, Keith M. Book SynopsisThis volume is dedicated to the phenomenon of staged photography, the trend that has revolutionised the photographic language since the 1980s. Through over 100 works, the catalogue tells how photography was able to reach the heights of fantasy and invention between the end of the 20th and the beginning of the 21st-century, previously almost exclusively entrusted to cinema and painting. Goldfish invading bedrooms, icefalls in the desert, imaginary cities, Marilyn Monroe and Lady D shopping together: all of this can happen thanks to veritable stages set up in order to build a parallel reality, or thanks to new technologies and, in particular, through the increasingly sophisticated use of Photoshop, released in 1990. Photography, the realm of documentation and (presumed) objectivity becomes the realm of fantasy, invention and subjectivity, completing the last decisive evolution of its history. Works by: Jeff Wall, Cindy Sherman, James Casebere, Sandy Skoglund, Yasumasa Morimura, Laurie Simmons, David Lachapelle, Bernard Faucon, Eileen Cowin, Bruce Charlesworth, David Levinthal, Paolo Ventura, Lori Nix, Miwa Yanagi, Alison Jackson, Julia Fullerton Batten, Jung Yeondoo, Jiang Pengyi. Book SynopsisProvincializing Bollywood argues that Bhojpuri cinema exemplifies the overflow of a provincial derivative form that defies its place in the given scheme of things. Situating it at the intersection of vernacular media production and the infrastructural-political reordering of provincial north India, the book shows that Bhojpuri media''s characteristic ''disobedience'' is marked by a libidinal excess - simultaneously scandalizing and moralizing - to address the inexact calculi of Bhojpuri speaking region''s''underdevelopment''. Bhojpuri media therefore demands that it is assessed not merely for its internal content but within the comparative media crucible, marked by interpenetrating forms and histories as diverse as those of ecological distress, musical traditions, gendered segregation, real estate, urban resettlements, and highway modernities. Foregrounding the libidinal excess, language politics, and curatorial informalities, Provincializing Bollywood synthesizes Bhojpuri media''s speTrade ReviewThis brilliant book, boldly comparative and bristling with ideas on every page, reads the re-emergence of Bhojpuri cinema in the new millennium as symptomatic of an "overflow" of north Indian provinciality. The "scandal" of this new Bhojpuri cinema and media prompts a deep meditation of what it means to be a province. Akshaya Kumar provides critical insights into how "libidinal belligerence and skewed entitlements" find expression in the "comparative media crucible" while negotiating local, regional, provincial, and vernacular imaginaries in popular culture. A deeply rewarding and provocative read. * Francesca Orsini, author of Print and Pleasure: Popular Literature and Entertaining Fictions in Colonial North India *Akshaya Kumar's ultimate interest is the political formation of contemporary India. Kumar argues that transformations in capital in contemporary India have found their expression in intensified regional identities. When the subaltern speaks here, they are speaking Bhojpuri. To account for this political identity, Kumar has to rethink the operations of cinema and the broader media ecology in which it operates. The result is an ambitious, relentlessly inventive book, opening up new domains for film and media studies. * Brian Larkin, author of Signal and Noise: Media, Infrastructure and Urban Culture in Nigeria *

Natural Science Imaging and Photography addresses a variety of imaging techniques and treatments, including microscopic, macroscopic, small animal, time based, and even aerial images captured using aircraft & drones. Nineteen chapters are offered filled with B&W and color photographs, illustrations, equations, and formulas to help simplify and explain the principles of imaging natural science subjects. Careful selection of imaging equipment, including cameras, lenses, filters, lab tools, etc. are presented in sufficient depth to guide one through the stages of image making. Plus digital imaging processing is presented in great detail, including extensive helpful step-by-step protocols. In addition to the technical imaging data, emphasis is stressed regarding creating scientific images while being careful to work safely, cause no harm, and obey professional standards and ethical guidelines. This outstanding technical book which Peres and his co-authors have created, each contributing their respective specialty, is hallmarked by one overriding theme: passion for their craft. Whether in the controlled lab or out in a remote field location their passion is palpable as they all clearly approach their work with the goal of attaining perfection. That passion is clearly reflected in their willingness to share their knowledge via this text. Anyone interested in learning about detailed techniques on capturing natural science images, from student to seasoned professional alike, should add this outstanding volume to their personal library, and keep it handy for frequent reference. Natural Science Imaging and Photography should be required-reading for all natural science image makers as it is truly an absolute "gold mine" of topical information! Robert C. Turner, RBP, MBA, FBPADirector (retired), BioMedical Graphics DepartmentThe Scripps Research Institute, La Jolla, CaliforniaProfessor Michael Peres’ book Natural Science Imaging and Photography is a complete tome on the techniques and practices required for the photographic documentation of natural science. His decades of experience as the head of RIT’s Biomedical Photography program prepared him well for this book. Peres invited some of the world’s specialists in their fields to be contributing authors covering aerial photography, ethical practices, field photography, geological photography, imaging processing, and best practices. These authors together with Peres have written a wonderful and comprehensive manual for natural science applications. Photographing subjects that are invisible is explored, as well as photomicrography, close up techniques, and photographing small animals in captivity. There are also chapters devoted to time-based imaging and ethics.Everything from the foundations of photography, optics, light measurement, electromagnetic radiation, digital technology and lighting is included. For a scientist who needs to photograph their research or the photographer interested in science, you will find this book to be an all-encompassing resource for the techniques and practices needed in natural science as well as scientific photography. It is written using clear and everyday language, so you don’t have to be a scientist to enjoy the book.
