His influence on portrait photography was profound and lives on today in the work of many contemporary photographers.Beaton used his camera, his ambition and his larger-than-life personality to mingle with a flamboyant and rebellious group of artists, writers, socialites and partygoers. From painters to potters, film makers to novelists, actors to musicians, Marti Friedlander was always deeply engaged with New Zealand's creative talent. This book, published to coincide with an exhibition at the National Portrait Gallery in Wellington, brings together those extraordinary people and photographs: Rita Angus and Ralph Hotere, C. K. Stead and Maurice Gee, Neil Finn and Kapka Kassabova, Ans Westra and Kiri Te Kanawa, and many many more. Marti Friedlander: Portraits of the Artists chronicles the changing face of the arts in New Zealand while also addressing a central theme in Marti Friedlander's photography. Featuring more than 250 photographs, many never previously published, the book is an illuminating chronicle of the cultural life of Aotearoa New Zealand.Trade Review'Marti Friedlander's penetrating portraits grow more poignantly precious every year. I find myself gazing into the faces and interior and exterior topographies as if looking for clues not just to the past, but to the present.' - Kapka Kassabova. 'It was so special to have met Marti and to see her vast collection of artist portraits. She was a such an important picture-making force! She has left big shoes to fill.' - Edith Amituanai. 'Being photographed by Marti felt comfortable and uncomfortable at the same time. Comfortable because you shared a sense of purpose. Uncomfortable because what she wanted was to get inside you to where the work came from. Marti's portraits of artists were central to her life's work. She "knew" artists - they did what she did: made art. Here are people - some well known, others less familiar - who were integral to the imaginative life of Aotearoa during her time with us.' - Jenny Bornholdt

Book SynopsisTraffic signs, sandwich boards and posters: Friedlander’s portrait of words in the world For more than five decades, Lee Friedlander has repeatedly been drawn to the signs that inscribe the American landscape, from hand-lettered ads to storefront windows to massive billboards. Incorporating these markings with precision and sly humor, Friedlander’s photographs record a kind of found poetry of desire and commerce. Focusing on one of the artist’s key motifs, Lee Friedlander: Signs presents a cacophony of wheat-paste posters, Coca-Cola ads, prices for milk, road signs, stop signs, neon lights, movie marquees and graffiti. The book collects 144 photographs made in New York and other places across the US, and features self-portraits, street photographs and work from series including The American Monument and America by Car, among others. Illegible or plainspoken, crude or whimsical, Friedlander’s signs are an unselfconscious portrait of modern life. Lee Friedlander (born 1934) began photographing in 1948. Among his many monographs are Sticks and Stones, Self-Portrait, Letters from the People, Cherry Blossom Time in Japan and At Work, among others. His work was included in the influential 1967 exhibition New Documents at the Museum of Modern Art, New York, curated by John Szarkowski. Among the most important living photographers, Friedlander is in the collections of museums around the world.Trade Review...Friedlander also brings out an emotional quality to tedious, daily warnings in our urban environment, like “No Parking” and “Everything Must Go!" -- Matthew Sedacca * New York Times *A superbly produced, coffee-table sized volume of some of Lee Friedlander's best work to date, "Lee Friedlander: Signs" is especially recommended for personal and professional American Photography collections, and would make an enduringly valued Memorial Fund acquisition for community, college, and university library collections. -- Able Greenspan * Midwest Book Review *

  • Emily Andersen – Portraits: Black & White

Anomie Publishing Emily Andersen – Portraits: Black & White

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisEmily Andersen has been making photographic portraits of the international avant-garde since graduating from the Royal College of Art in the early 1980s. Having started out by finding her way into some pretty cool-sounding private parties in London and New York, she began convincing artists and musicians to pose for her – from Nan Goldin to Nico. Over the past thirty-five years, she has built up a remarkable and beautiful portfolio that includes many high-profile writers, poets, film directors, actors and architects, with Peter Blake, Michael Caine, Derek Jarman, Zaha Hadid, Arthur Miller, Helen Mirren, Michael Nyman and Eduardo Paolozzi among those featured in this new publication devoted to her black-and-white portraits. In addition to celebrities, Andersen has documented many interesting and inspiring figures who are celebrated and respected within their fields, offering an invaluable insight into the lives of people who have made significant contributions to the wider cultural and creative life of the USA, Britain and Europe over the current and recent generations. An illuminating essay by critic Jonathan P. Watts not only explores the lives of some of Andersen’s many sitters and the photographs she has taken of them, but also get to grips with ideas such as the nature of portraiture, photojournalism and the limitations of the documentary photograph, framing them within debates of the late 1980s onwards. ‘While all of these portraits may not be recognisably activist images’, asserts Watts, ‘they’re rooted in the belief of a micro-politics of everyday lives and relationships.’ Readers can discover more about the background, circumstances and dynamics of many of the shoots by means of notes prepared by Andersen herself to accompany each image, which are regularly entertaining and thought-provoking as well as informative.Beyond capturing the essence of these figures and of the times in which they are living, Andersen has a particular talent for entering into their private lives and private spaces, often being invited into her sitters’ own homes. By photographing family members and friends, she gets an angle on them that is often deeply personal, sensitive and honest. Creating works that are carefully composed and choreographed and yet regularly informal and relaxed, there is always, somehow, a sense that Andersen is more interested in encouraging her subjects to speak through her images than in imposing her own impressions upon them. It is also fascinating to note how Andersen is often keen to document the young children of celebrities, especially girls, and has made a substantial body of work of fathers and daughters. She is always interested to know what these young women grew up to be, and sometimes returns to photograph the same people years, if not decades, later.Andersen has been commissioned for innumerable magazines and newspapers including the New Musical Express (NME), The Face, Elle Deco, Domus, The Times, The Guardian, The Independent, The Sunday Telegraph and The Economist, and has been commissioned by publishers such as Quadrille, Simon and Schuster, Oxford University Press, Hachette, Random House and Harper Collins. Her works have been exhibited internationally in venues including The Photographers’ Gallery, London; The Institute of Contemporary Art, London; The Scottish National Portrait Gallery, Edinburgh; The Barber Institute of Fine Arts, University of Birmingham; Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art; Jehangir Art Gallery, Mumbai; and China Arts Museum, Shanghai. A winner of the John Kobal prize for portraiture, she has a number of works in The National Portrait Gallery, London and in other public collections including The British Library, London, and The Contemporary Art Society, London. Andersen is a senior lecturer in photography at Nottingham Trent University.Designed by Melanie Mues of Mues Design, London, with reprography by DPM, London, and printed by EBS, Verona, this stunning hardback monograph has been released in both a trade edition published by Anomie and as an artist’s limited edition of fifty signed and numbered copies, accompanied by an original print. The cover image is of the Chilean-French filmmaker Alejandro Jodorowsky and his son, Axel, in London in 1989.

Karnac Books Portrait of a Life: Melanie Klein and the Artists

Book SynopsisMelanie Klein was a Viennese psychoanalyst who extended the work of Sigmund Freud in significant and innovative ways. She lived and worked in the UK from 1926 until her death in 1959. During her life she was a controversial and divisive figure and has remained so since her death; conflict between the Freudian and Kleinian strands of psychoanalysis dominated the history of psychoanalysis in the latter half of the twentieth century. The reasons why she polarised opinion are multiple and complex; partly they were related to her psychoanalytic ideas and how she expressed them but they were also intrinsic to her personality. In 2016, a pair of delicate low relief sculptures of Melanie Klein in profile were re-discovered, having been hidden away for some eighty years, and have been subsequently identified as the work of the sculptor Oscar Nemon. Roger Amos was asked to write a brief article about these sculptures for publication on the Melanie Klein Trust website. During his research, he discovered that Klein had destroyed two significant works of art depicting herself: one a bust by the same sculptor as the low relief profiles, Oscar Nemon, and the other a portrait by William Coldstream. This beautifully illustrated book is the first comprehensive review of all attempts to portray Klein during her lifetime, from her earliest childhood until her old age, including the work of painters, sculptors, and portrait photographers. It reviews the history of each artistic project and the relationship between Klein and the artist involved, locating them in a narrative of Klein’s life. The complex and interrelated reasons why she chose to destroy some of the representations of herself but kept others are identified and discussed. Through an understanding of the subject/artist relationship, Amos illuminates Klein’s professional life in the world of psychoanalysis. A must-read for all scholars and professionals working in the field of psychoanalysis, psychotherapy and psychodynamic counselling, plus those with an interest in Melanie Klein or aesthetics, this enjoyable read shines a never-before seen light on to the world of Melanie Klein.Trade ReviewRoger Amos has written and illustrated a fascinating work on the relationships between Melanie Klein and the artists who portrayed her. This book sheds important new light on her character and also on those of the photographers and artists. -- John Steiner, Treasurer of the Melanie Klein TrustIn this carefully researched and often moving book, Roger Amos brings together the worlds of portraiture and psychoanalysis. In an articulate and sympathetic way, with wonderful illustrations, the author addresses the sometimes strained relationships between the pioneering psychoanalyst Melanie Klein and the artists who tried to capture her essential qualities in their work. -- Jane Milton, Honorary Archivist, Melanie Klein TrustRoger Amos’ vivid and straightforward account of the ways in which Melanie Klein reacted to pictures of her touches on feelings we may all have about 'being seen'. -- Irma Brenman Pick, past President of the British Psychoanalytical SocietyAt the heart of Roger Amos’ work is a haunting question: Why did Melanie Klein destroy two works of art created of her, a bust by Oscar Nemon and a painting by William Coldstream? Amos addresses this question with in-depth research and an artist’s intuitive grasp of mood, tone, and emotional resonance. The reader will be rewarded with a compassionate insight into a complex personality. -- Donald Campbell, past President of the British Psychoanalytical SocietyTable of ContentsAbout the author List of Figures Introduction Chapter 1: Early Life – Childhood and Adolescence, Vienna 1882 to 1902 Chapter 2: Married Life, Budapest 1903 to 1914 Chapter 3: The Unrecorded Decade, Budapest and Berlin 1915 to 1925 Chapter 4: Middle Years – Life in London 1926 to 1950 Chapter 5: Melanie Klein and Oscar Nemon 1939 Chapter 6: Later Life in London – 1950 to 1960 Chapter 7: Melanie Klein and William Coldstream 1952 Conclusion References Index

Book SynopsisOnly Us is a comprehensive, photographic portrait of humanity; a tapestry of mankind. As a species we are incredibly diverse, yet remarkably similar in so many ways. Our ability to adapt is unrivalled; from the four corners of the planet there are few places we have not succeeded in inhabiting. Only Us is a unique look at what essentially makes us human. Intended to expand the appreciation of its audience, drawing upon parallels we all have, transporting the viewer from their living room to far flung lands full of colour, inspiration and natural beauty.Trade Review"Stunning images. . . . Dunn's sense of adventure and photographer's unfailing eye for a human story have combined to create a deeply personal outlook on humanity in a way that examines our similarities, rather than differences, from a positive and life-affirming stance." * Explorers Journal * "An epic photographic portrait of humanity featuring a diverse cast of characters. . . . Dunn's new book showcases his love of travel and his love of photography, and how he combines the two to such good effect. . . . Only Us is a love letter to Dunn's insatiable wanderlust and his wonder for his subjects." * Digital Camera World * "Stuart Dunns' Only Us is an exceptional photographic celebration of humanity. . . . All human life, from all areas of the world, is laid bare here-an incubated baby in Sheffield. Ugandan night fishermen at work. Thai monks on laundry day. Tanzanian hunter-gatherers. Canadian rangers protecting polar bears. A Newcastle native outside a pub. . . . This outward-looking, inclusive global perspective on humanity permeates every image, each of which really is worth a thousand words. Each of them prompts questions, invites the viewer to consider the lives of the people depicted. They summon stories. While the accompanying copy contextualises the images, noting where they were taken and who's featured, with occasional fascinating personal anecdotes, Dunns' words leave space for personal contemplation. Some are close-up portraits, focussing on faces, with the subjects' eyes and expressions revealing emotional states we all recognise and relate to. Others take a step back and show people at home, at work, or in their natural landscapes, from Arctic tundra to Omani deserts. And all of them lay bare our shared human experiences, prompting empathy, and a stirring sense of interconnection." -- Joanne Owen * LoveReading *

Book SynopsisWhite Shoes is a collection of self-portraits taken in locations around New York that were central to the city's once pivotal - and now largely obscured and unacknowledged - involvement in the slave trade. Nona Faustine depicts herself at the sites of slave auctions, burial grounds, slave-owning farms, and the coastal locations where slave ships docked, posing nude apart from a pair of white high-heeled shoes. Documenting herself in places where history becomes tangible, Faustine acts as a conduit or receptor, in solidarity with people whose names and memories have been lost but are embedded in the land. Through quiet but defiant self-representation, Faustine responds to a history of depiction of Black people that is shaped by subjugation, phrenology, and pseudo-science. Her complex large-format images refer and respond to a range of sources including daguerrotypes of slaves and photographs commissioned by naturalists, while her nudity - expressive of fearless self-possession as well as vulnerability - subverts the legacy of Black and female nudes in Western art. Running throughout the images, the talismanic white shoes that give the series its name suggest the many adaptations to dominant White culture that were and are still demanded of people of colour. At once historical and speculative, White Shoes confronts the relationship between the visible and invisible, between what is displayed and what is kept from view. Includes newly commissioned texts by Pamela Sneed, Jessica Lanay, Jonathan Michael Square and Seph Rodney, together with an interview of the artist by Jessica Lanay.

Book SynopsisNarcissism is the defining pathology of the twenty-first century, but what if it is not self-obsession that defines us but a need for self-transformation? Narcissus in Bloom is a short history of the self-portrait, beginning with Renaissance painters like Albrecht Durer, Rembrandt and Caravaggio, through to photographers and celebrities like Paris Hilton and Kim Kardashian, Lee Friedlander and Herve Guibert. Analysing the ways that so many artists have regarded their own image, how might the age of the selfie be considered as a time of transformation rather than stasis? By returning to the original tale of Narcissus, and the flower from which he takes his name, this book offers an alternative reading of narcissism from within the midst of a moralising subgenre of books that argue our self-obsession will be the death of us. That may be so. But what will we become after we have taken the watery track, and rid ourselves of the cloistered self-image given to us by late capitalism?Trade ReviewNarcissus in Bloom is a real achievement ... it marks a return to a now lost tradition: big-picture cultural theorising that speaks to and illuminates present-day anxieties in unexpected ways, spoken in the vernacular of contemporary popular culture, of the likes of Richard Hoggart, Raymond Williams, Stuart Hall and more. "Relating one's emotional self to those around us is at the very heart of Colquhoun's queer critical and political project. Narcissus in Bloom is ambitious, moving, inspirational and loving... a purposeful and universal work driven by the author's passion for photography.""Rather than see the selfie as a sign of self-absorption, this engrossing volume understands the selfie as expressing a longing for a kind of self-transformation. Elegantly and stylishly written, this book is the best kind of cultural criticism, sweeping away the worn- out cliches of the familiar for the freshness and wonder of the truly new.”"A fascinating alternative genealogy of our modern obsession with the photographic self-image. You'll never look at a selfie the same way again."

As an adopted person, photographer Eric Mueller always wondered how it would feel to look like someone else. At age forty-five, when he saw a photo of his birth mother for the first time, it triggered the idea to photograph family members with shared physical characteristics. Over the course of three years Mueller photographed around 700 people — from newborns to nonagenarians — and asked them what it’s like to resemble each other. The result is Family Resemblance, a book exploring the special bond that certain family members share. Interlaced with the photos are quotes from project participants, revealing how resembling one another has affected their lives and relationships.Trade Review"A unique and fascinating typological study that explores the special bond certain family members share" - Art Daily
