Rocky Nook Authentic Portraits: Searching for Soul,
Book SynopsisIt is not the posing or the light that makes a portrait successful. Nor is it how glamorous or beautiful the subject looks. The best portraits show us more — they reveal hidden secrets and deeper truths. Ever so slightly, they give us hints of character, essence, soul, story, and life. And the best portraits have a lasting significance. They resonate in an interesting way. They not only show us appearance, but they reveal to us that authentic and deeply human light that shines within. These photographs are an outward expression of inward dreams, hopes, and ideals. In Authentic Portraits, photographer Chris Orwig teaches us that the secret to authentic portraits is simple: curiosity, empathy, kindness, and soul — plus a dash of technique. By caring deeply about the subject, we increase the odds of someone else caring as well. And the only way to truly care is to be yourself. Authenticity is more powerful than anything else. Authentic Portraits is about taking, making, and creating better frames. But it's also about finding and becoming your best self. In the pursuit to capture more authentic and meaningful frames, you'll find that the two paths intersect in unexpected ways.

Trope Publishing Co. Lucy Hamidzadeh: Unfinished Stories: Unfinished
Book Synopsis“I never know what I’m going to capture, it’s all spontaneous and that’s what I love the most. I often find myself walking the streets for hours and hours taking photos. Susan Schadt Press, LLC MUTTS: A Celebration of Mystery Mixed Breeds
Book SynopsisMUTTS is a photographic celebration of mystery mixed breeds. If you've ever loved a bonafide mutt, you know that they're some of the best, most loyal dogs ever.MUTTS features more than 100 gorgeous pups from all different origins and breeds, photographed by Olivia Grey Pritchard. Each photo is accompanied by the pooch's name and best guess of breed mix, and list a unique trait about them. MUTTS aims to inspire joy and connection when readers look through these photographs. And for people who haven't considered adopting a rescue pet before, this book shows that mutts have just as many unique, lovable, and desirable qualities as pedigreed dogs.Olivia has owned mutts her whole life—from a border collie mix named Spike that her mom found as a puppy trying to get milk out of a carton and a husky mix named Wylie who met the school bus every afternoon, to the most loyal hound / shepherd mix named Chester who loved to sun himself in a certain spot in the front yard. So it's no surprise that as an adult, she has a 120 pound St. Bernard / retriever / shepherd rescue named Jasper—the most patient, protective, devoted dog ever. Her mission with this book is to call attention to the heartbreaking and chilling fact that according the ASPCA, over half a million dogs are euthanized in US shelters each year, and to encourage more rescue adoptions. MW Editions Lydia Panas: Sleeping Beauty
Book SynopsisPortraits of women and girls intertwined with the photographer’s gaze, in a rare subversion of photography’s power relations This volume presents award-winning Pennsylvania-based photographer Lydia Panas’ (born 1958) much-praised series of mesmerizing color portraits of reclining women and girls. In an interesting reversal of roles, the artist's and models' gazes are intertwined, incorporating the viewer as participant in an often uncomfortable connection. Critics and curators have praised the work for Panas’ artistic and technical mastery, and all have noted and examined the powerfully affecting gaze of her subjects. Panas notes: “While my subjects do in actuality turn their gaze towards me, it’s as if at times I turn the camera onto myself, both in the present and back in time.” In Sleeping Beauty, her subjects lie down, a metaphor for the position girls and women have been placed in historically. But they look out with self-awareness, in a way that implies a lack of complicity.

ZE Books Long Live King Kobe: Following the Murder of
Book Synopsis"On the eve of Christmas Eve..." Paul Auster writes, "Tyler Kobe Nichols collapsed onto the sidewalk with three knife wounds in the front of his torso and one in the back." His death soon followed. With it, the twenty-one-year-old joined the ranks of young people killed by senseless violence in America. Tyler's death warranted just two paragraphs in the New York Daily News. And yet with each death, a new story begins that is rarely if ever told; one that centers around the fallout from traumatic loss. This story, as Tyler's mother Sherma Chambers keenly observes, is generational, with no clear end in sight. Long Live King Kobe began with a mistake. Photographer Spencer Ostrander had arrived at the funeral for Tyler believing he was a victim of gun violence, and hoping to include him in an ongoing project Ostrander had created to document the lives of gun victims. Instead, he met Sherma Chambers, and a week later a collaboration, which soon included Paul Auster, had begun--one in which a pair of strangers would join a family in their sorrow. Thanks to the generosity of the entire Nichols/Chambers family, Long Live King Kobe invites us to join them in their intimate grief in the weeks that followed Tyler's death. The family's response to his murder, including their creation of a foundation dedicated to counteracting street violence with love, is one that presents their tragedy as a means for our society to grow. Long Live King Kobe offers a privileged journey into the power of community for all who have felt outrage, confusion, sadness, and deep despair at the epidemic of violence in our country. It also provides reason to hope. The Long Live King Kobe Foundation, started by Sherma Chambers, will support nonviolence initiatives to keep youth safe. Proceeds from this book will benefit the foundation.Trade Review"These photographs, this story, they are hard to deal with, yet one goes back to the pages, because we have the freedom to turn away from the tragedy, but the family and friends of Tyler Kobe Nichols do not. Their tributes are eloquent, as is the testimony in their faces. This is not black-on-black crime, this is the American way of death, as Ostrander's haunting work so powerfully tells us." -Darryl Pinckney, Author of High Cotton and Black Deutschland "This engrossing book reminds us how often such stories are ignored or overlooked. A loss so inexplicable might be forgotten by all but those who knew Tyler Kobe Nichols without these images and testimonies. The empty living rooms, barber's chairs and neighborhood corners are filled with his presence. He is alive in the lives he touched. He is alive in us. I keep thinking about the condolence card from his mother's co-workers. We people who did not know him have a chance to know him here. Our sympathies become commemorations; our prayers become praise songs. We are given the gift of witness." -Terrance Hayes, Poet "How can we do justice to a gentle, openhearted 21-year old who was violently, randomly murdered? How can the particulars of his life and character outlast the horror of his death? Photographs often seize on extremities: the ugly evidence of the crime, the uncontainable grief of friends and family. What Spencer Ostrander gives us instead is a quiet space where each mourner thinks and remembers, confronts and yields to loss, hour by hour and day by day. Here is the evidence of things seen, known, and loved: Tyler's playground basketball hoop; Tyler's face tattooed on the arms of family and friends; the red barbershop chair where he got his last haircut; the memorial candles glowing softly; a cousin touching a picture frame as if his hand could bestow life on Tyler's image. Death imposes solitude on every mourner-we each bear the burden of loss alone. And yet, as we turn the pages of this quietly powerful book, we also feel the collective sorrow of this family. Their closeness. Their valor in accepting the burdens and range of grief. Ostrander does not let us presume. He lets us honor their mourning with empathic respect." -Margo Jefferson, Pulitzer Prize for Criticism and author of Negroland

Steve Best COMEDIANS
Book SynopsisComedians gives us an exclusive and revealing peek behind the curtain of the British Comedy scene. Steve Best's own years on the comedy circuit have not only taken him to the four corners of the planet but helped him to gain the trust of some of the funniest people on it - and with it an open door to the four corners of their dressing rooms. Being in the exact right place is only one thing, however. Being there at the right time is another matter entirely; and none more so than when it can be measured by the split-seconds of the camera's shutter. We are very fortunate, therefore, that Best's mastery of photographic timing is faultless because with it we get such a complete picture. The look exchanged between Julian Clary and the compere Paul Thorne, at the Ealing Comedy Festival, was as fleeting as can be, but its depth does not escape Best's eye. There is such camaraderie and affection between the two comedians. There is admiration. Well-wishing and gratefulness. And we sense the shared adrenalin rush. We know that it is Joe Rowntree who must be about to go on because we can hardly breathe for him whilst Michael Fabbri must just have triumphed because Best captures his immortal smile for all eternity. In Best's image of Barry Cryer we have a whole career in the mirror, and we can't tell whether the name-call is about to happen or is as long gone as any of the nerves that used to go with it. And who knew that Jack Whitehall might ever take anything seriously enough to show any nerves, or to feel the need to actually plan any of his material for that matter? But of course he does, and of course he has to - as Best reveals so perfectly to us. And so it is with Harry Hill. Everything is there in the moments of stillness that Best portrays - the meticulous and hard-working people behind the comic personas we know and love.Trade ReviewI’m not sure when I first saw Steve’s act - a brilliantly inventive and hilarious procession of visual gags and tricks - but I remember being glad I didn’t have to follow him. No one wanted to, you couldn’t top that, you needed an interval or a bus home. So when he said he was turning his hand to photography I was more than a little surprised. The fact is no one takes photos of comedians like Steve. Why? Because he knows us, because he’s one of us. No one captures the atmosphere backstage like him because no one has the access - to us he’s just Steve, and he’s got his camera with him again we stop trying to impress or be funny - no mean feat for a comic - and Click! he’s got us. When I look at these photos I’m right back there in the clubs , in the theatres, that happy vibrant scene, the camaraderie, the thrill and the fight - because it doesn’t matter how big or successful you are or how many people have bought tickets to see you, we are all, at the end of the day exactly the same thing - stand up comics and on any night any one of the people in this book can die or be the best in the world. Only we know this and only Steve is able to nail it.Thanks for capturing us Steve you are simply the… no, sorry, not gonna go there. - Harry Hill… For many years I’ve been following Steve’s photography work and have been mightily impressed, so when it came to looking for a photographer for the Comedy Store's 40th birthday show and celebration in 2019 then it was a no-brainer to ask him to be the official photographer. I love the shot of myself holding my granddaughter when I gave a little speech at the celebrations. In fact I love it so much it is now on the walls of the Comedy Store! Steve has a fantastic eye for catching the moment. Being a comedian himself he totally gets the timing of comedy and the nuances and idiosyncrasies of the comedians. He also understands the Comedy Store, the best comedy club in the world (I would say that wouldn’t I?) Steve has photographically mastered the room, finding weird and wonderful angles and positions to creatively capture the performance. And because he feels very at home with the comedians he manages to get beautifully candid, in the moment, poignant shots backstage. His pictures document the ever changing world of comedy and comedians. With this collection of photographs he has not only given us so much visual pleasure but also a superlative historical pictorial documentation of the best live comedy scene in the world. I’ll certainly ask him back for the Comedy Store's 50th birthday celebrations! - Don Ward, Founder, Executive Producer & CEO of the Comedy Store… I love Steve’s photos. Being a stand up comedian himself he knows what makes a comedian tick, and this comes across in the photos beautifully. - Lee Mack… I just went to the Dome and saw your exhibition. It is brilliant. I kept going back and looking at some of them over and over again. You should be immensely proud of it, you've created something really special - Matt Forde… You’re used to posing for photographs in this line of work, so a lot of photos we have of ourselves have a self awareness about them. He always captures us in the most natural positions. This photo of me for example, this is the first and last time I will ever strike this pose. I imagine it’ll be the photo they use at my service when I actually die on stage in my 70’s (a psychic told me once, that’s how it’s going to happen.) - Jayde Adams… Being a performer himself gives Steve Best a unique access to and understanding of comics. He knows where to find us, lurking and laughing in corridors or getting ‘into the zone’ backstage. I love his photographs because they show the timeless beauty of the theatre or comedy club. He captures the huge variety of emotions that comics will whirl through in one show. You can tell from the photos that he’s one of us and he ‘gets’ us. - Jo Caulfield… Steve Best would be one of my favourite portrait photographers, even if I'd just come upon him by chance. The fact that his photographs are all of people I know, doing the thing I love best, is kind of overdoing it a little to be honest. Back in 1995, in the Tufnell Park Tavern, Steve Best made me fall off my chair, laughing at his act. Now, he makes me sit up straight, looking at some of the best stage and backstage photography I've ever seen. I wish I knew what it was, the magical ingredient, the knack of capturing character in a likeness, in a frozen moment, on film. Whatever it is, Steve has it. - Simon Evans… Now live art is a memory there has never been a better time to revisit Steve Best's unflinching portraits of comedians at work, in spaces that will one day soon ring with laughter again. - Stewart Lee… It takes a comedian to know a comedian and Steve just instinctively knows how to "get the shot". The pictures that capture the joy, laughter and camaraderie of those off stage moments and what it is to be part of the gang of clowns. Equally he has got such a brilliant eye for getting those pictures that seem to get the very essence of the comic. The thing that defines them on stage. I'm usually caught in an exaggerated cartoon like pose...and this is me in a nut shell. - Zoe Lyons.

Figure 1 Publishing Finding American: Stories of Immigration from the
Book SynopsisA captivating photographic portrait of the diverse experiences of immigrants in the United States, depicting the resilience and realities of building a home in a new place.Disturbed by the increasingly hostile views of immigrants that arose in the United States during the 2016 presidential election, photographer Colin Boyd Shafer set out on a road trip to meet hundreds of families and individuals with roots abroad who now live in America. The result, after a year of travel covering fifty thousand miles, is this collection of striking photos and moving stories that form a portrait of the nation’s complex and shifting relationship to immigration. Some of the participants chose to make America home; others were displaced by crises. Some were warmly welcomed and granted citizenship; others battled the immigration system for years and still live with fear and uncertainty. Their circumstances and origins vary, but all are united by a willingness to share their stories—of harrowing journeys, intense love, separated families, passionate activism—in hopes of adding nuance and depth to a vital issue that continues to polarize Americans.Trade Review“Beautifully reveals the intricate tapestry of humanity with remarkable sensitivity, poise, and creativity. Colin has skilfully offered us a window into our own stories. A true masterpiece.”—Deepak Ramola, Founder & Artistic Director of Project FUEL and author of 50 Toughest Questions of Life“This is beautiful work that really forces us to think about what it means to be American—and, indeed, human. Rich, layered, and poignant, it is a reminder that there is more that connects us than divides us.”—Heaven Crawley, Head of Equitable Development and Migration at United Nations University Centre for Policy Research"Through Colin’s lens and the participants’ stories we see the realities of immigrant life in America: sometimes beautiful, sometimes harrowing, always human."—Barbara Davidson, Pulitzer Prize-winning photojournalist and Guggenheim Fellow“At a time where anti-immigrant sentiment is painfully high around the world, when we are aching for bridges, not borders, this book offers us necessary hope through storytelling and human connection. Timely, provocative, and compassionate, Finding American should be in every home, to be combed through carefully and thoroughly."—Ruchika Tulshyan, author of Inclusion on Purpose and The Diversity Advantage"The beautiful photographs and moving stories provide a powerful antidote to anti-immigrant racism in the United States. Highly recommend!"—Reece Jones, author of White Borders and Nobody is Protected"Finding American is an exploration into the complex, at times violent, history of the United States of America and the people who make and remake it with every generation. Rather than some essentialised list of characteristics, this generational process of mixing and renewal is what America and being American is. America is the only place where these particular stories of immigration, hope, despair and renewal so vividly and movingly captured in this collection can unfold. It is this process that produces something new and never fixed, uniquely American."—Nando Sigona, professor of International Migration and Forced Displacement, University of Birmingham, UK"Finding American is a book about the polyphonic narrative of the United States, but it is also a book about our whole glorious, hybrid, complicated, heartbreaking, heartlifting world. It is a loving documentation of humanity's most precious resource: our stories. It is a timely reminder to stop, see each other, and listen, because there is no single story."—Preeta Samarasan, author of Evening Is the Whole Day"It's no simple feat to travel across the entire American map, but perhaps Colin’s most significant achievement is connecting deeply—through photography—with his truly global cast of subjects."—Rory Doyle, documentary photographer and winner of the Zeiss Photography Award and Smithsonian Photo Award"Shafer allows our newest citizens to share their stories using their own words, and his camera. The book feels like a collaboration between everyone involved, not unlike the nation that we all call home."—Kenneth Jarecke, photojournalist, author, and founding member of Contact Press Images"When I met with Colin and his wife in the Río Grande Valley, I immediately saw the heart he was putting into this project. We talked for a while; his sincere interest, curiosity, and respect allowed me to open up about my life, what it is to be an immigrant in this country, about the many things I missed, including my grandfather, who had recently passed away. He was interested in the experience, the common thread that unites us all. I feel humbled to be part of this encompassing project, and I can't wait to read the stories that will be forever kept in this piece of history."—Rossy Evelin Lima DePadilla, assistant professor of translation, Texas A&M University–Corpus Christi; founder, Jade Publishing; board president and executive director of Latino Book Review"Individual stories are often lost in ever-sharpening political narratives around human movement. Colin Boyd Shafer’s critical, sensitive, and nuanced look at the various reasons why people make the journeys they do forces us to consider the people at the center of these complicated stories."—Petra Molnar, Associate Director, Refugee Law Lab, York University; author of Artificial Borders: AI, Surveillance, and Border Tech Experiments"Finding American is a powerful reminder of the struggle in pursuing the American ideal. Immigrants are respectfully photographed, their stories told with sensitivity and insight. Page after page will somehow strike a deep chord in all of us as fellow human beings—immigrants or otherwise."—Richard Beaven, photographer and author of All of Us: Portraits of an American Bicentennial"In Finding American, Colin Boyd Shafer pays tribute to those who, from the beginning, have made America great: hard-working immigrants who chose this land as their home, and have devoted the fruit of their lives' efforts to it. Beyond faceless numbers there are people who deserve to be seen, heard, and respected. In their dreams, there is hope; in their work, pride; in their smile, the future. And every page in this book gives us a taste of how bright that future can be if we open our arms to this spectacular diversity of colors and accents."—Martha Bátiz, author of No Stars in the Sky"The book is absolutely incredible and beautiful … In a world where 30 second clips rule and we are rewarded for our ability to be quick and concise, this book is a reminder of how much art can encompass when we make the time and take the time."—Lucie Pohl, Immigrant Jam PodcastTable of ContentsForeword – Ali NooraniA Short NoteLEGACIESJOURNEYSBORDERSPURSUITSJOBSCOMMUNITIESIDENTITIESADVOCATESFUTURESA Longer NoteAcknowledgmentsIndex of ParticipantsAbout the Author

Book Synopsis"The star-studded images are one thing, but their candid context is what makes them special." – Joy Ling, Esquire Singapore "...many famous names have stepped in front of his camera, captured quickly in his distinctive, clean style, with the images featuring in magazines and newspapers, galleries and exhibitions, and even earning him an MBE from Queen Elizabeth II for services of his photography." – Chris Anderson, Air Magazine "Andy’s contact-sheets give us what feels like a VIP pass to spend time with his subjects. We see their beauty, their flaws, charisma, humanity and even a glimpse into their thoughts and process. We see the person in these people and are touched by their being." Kylie Minogue "Above all Andy Gotts allows his subjects to shine through, untouched. His artistry does not come afterwards, in Photoshop and all the supposedly flattering trickery technology has taught us to expect. His skill is there in each frame, each moment, in the relationship he has built with his sitter, no matter how short a time they have shared, and the trust he has engendered in them because he is, quite simply, a good man. Anyone who encounters him can sense immediately his openness and kindness and I think this book is most of all a testament to those qualities." Alan Cumming " With this amazing book, you will see why Andy is as much a star as his subjects.” Gene Simmons A 90-second shoot with Stephen Fry in 1989 launched the career of Andy Gotts, photographer to the stars. ACC Art Books Eye-D: Portraits by Anna Gabriel
Book Synopsis"It is thought provoking when you look at people's eyes and the things they have seen and the places they have been...there's so much to consider when looking at Anna's work." — Today Australia “To photograph an eye is to see into another world, a deeper emotional world. These photographs are like small windows into houses that we pass every day but never look inside. In a time where people are looking at screens and experiencing less eye contact with each other, I am happy to put out this book that takes a deeper look into the eyes of these famous faces.” – Anna Gabriel. It is said that the eyes are a window to the soul. They are what we first look at when we meet a stranger, and one of the most expressive parts of the human body. The eye speaks an intricate language, one that cannot be heard, only felt. The size of the pupil can signify focus or arousal. We meet each other’s eyes to show attentive interest, yet often feel discomfort when stared at: an evolutionary trait designed to alert us to a predatory gaze. This book is a testament to the power of the human eye. It gathers together Anna Gabriel’s collection of photographs, showing the close-up eyes of numerous well-known rock and film stars, including David Byrne, Helena Christensen, Willem Dafoe, The Edge, Noel Gallagher, Annie Lennox, Susan Sarandon, Benjamin Zephaniah, Peter Gabriel and many more.Trade Review"It is thought-provoking when you look at people's eyes and the things they have seen and the places they have been...there's so much to consider when looking at Anna's work." - Today Australia"They say the eyes are the windows to the soul and with that in mind, Peter Gabriel’s daughter Anna has compiled this unusual take on the traditional celebrity portrait that hones in exclusively on her subject’s peepers." - Classic Pop magazine

Liverpool University Press The Reclining Nude: Agnès Varda, Catherine
Book SynopsisThe figure of a woman reclining, in repose, displayed, abandoned, fallen, asleep, or dreaming, returns in the work of women filmmakers and photographers in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. Filmmakers Agnès Varda and Catherine Breillat, and American photographer working in Paris, Nan Goldin, return to the paintings of Titian, Velázquez, Goya, Courbet, and others, re-imagining, and re-purposing, their images of female beauty, display, (auto)eroticism, and intimacy. This book, a sensuous evocation of these feminist works, claims a female-identified pleasure in looking. The artists explored align images of repose and sensuality with other images of horizontality and proneness, of strong emotional content, images of erotic involvement, of vulnerability, of bodily contortion, of listlessness, grief, and depression. The reclining nude is for all three artists a starting point for a reflection on the relation of film, projections, and still photography, to painting, and a sustained re-imagining of the meanings conjured through serial returns to a particular pose. This book claims that the image of the reclining nude is compelling, for female-identified artists – and for all allied in feeling and picturing femininity – in the sensitive, ethically adventurous, politically complex feminist issues it engages. The reclining nude is an image of passivity, of submission, of hedonism. It allows thought about passivity as pleasure, about depression and grief figured posturally, about indolence as a form of resistance and anarchy. Through this image, female-identified artists have claimed freedom to offer new focus on these extremes of emotion. They are re-imagining horizontality.Trade ReviewReviews ‘This book is a deep and far-reaching exploration of the sensory impressions, affective impact, and gender-ideological import of films and photographs by three women—Agnès Varda, Catherine Breillat, and Nan Goldin. The author wisely focuses on an important but underexamined area of these women’s work: images of the reclining nude.'Douglas Keesey, California Polytechnic State UniversityTable of ContentsContentsAcknowledgementsIllustrationsshorelineThe Reclining Nudefour reflections on reclining: 1four reflections on reclining: 2four reflections on reclining: 3four reflections on reclining: 4VardaBreillatGoldinIndia SongBibliography and Filmography

Bodleian Library Through the Lens of Janet Stone: Portraits,
Book SynopsisJanet Stone’s photograph albums feature informal portraits from the mid-twentieth century of many of the leading cultural figures and personalities of the day. The wife of the distinguished engraver Reynolds Stone established a kind of literary salon in the idyllic setting of the Old Rectory at Litton Cheney in West Dorset. Here their wide circle of friends could visit, work and flourish as Janet photographed them. Included between these pages are portraits of Benjamin Britten, Peter Pears, John Piper, Iris Murdoch, John Bayley, C. Day-Lewis, Jill Balcon, Kenneth Clark, Freya Stark, Siegfried Sassoon, Willa Muir, Sylvia Townsend Warner and Frances Partridge as well as Janet’s husband Reynolds and her family. Although not a technical photographer, Janet instinctively knew the best moment to click the shutter, thus often capturing her subjects off-guard and at their most informal. In this way we see picnics by the tennis court, John Bayley trying on a headscarf, or a young Daniel Day-Lewis dressed up as a knight. Others are portrayed reading or relaxing in the gardens, drink in hand. These unique portraits give a beguiling insight into a special set of circumstances: an idyllic place and time and a group of people drawn together by two contrasting but complimentary personalities, the shy genius of Reynolds and the outgoing style and glamour of Janet Stone.

ACC Art Books Dylan By Schatzberg
Book SynopsisIn 1965, photographer Jerry Schatzberg, already well-established in the field due to his fashion and portrait photography for various publications, such as Vogue, Esquire and Life, listened to Bob Dylan for the first time. He had been hearing about the singer for close to three years; two friends were especially dogged and would ask him every time they spoke if he had heard the music yet. Finally, feeling obligated to them for their persistency, he listened and understood immediately why Dylan was inspiring such passionate excitement. Shortly thereafter, Schatzberg was photographing a job in his studio and had some fortuitous company. Famed music journalist Al Aronowitz and disc jockey Scott Ross were discussing Dylan and a recent performance they had seen of his. Half listening to their conversation, he volunteered that he'd like to photograph the singer if given the chance. Dylan's new wife (one of the friends mentioned above) called the following day and gave him an open invitation to the studio where he was currently recording 'Highway 61 Revisited'. Excited and curious, Schatzberg set off the very next day for the studio, exactly six days after the seminal Newport Folk Festival set where Dylan went electric and was collectively booed. Schatzberg received a warm welcome from the singer, who immediately sat him down to listen to what he had been recording that day. Dylan gave him free rein of the studio once he started shooting and the images that emerged from that day make obvious the comfortable and relaxed atmosphere that was already brewing between photographer and subject. Considering Dylan's almost-universal dislike of journalists (and by extension photographers), this was a completely unprecedented situation, one that Schatzberg took seriously. That almost-instant trust and rapport quickly grew into a friendship and they are part of the reason Schatzberg's sittings with Dylan work so successfully and are so important. Dylan is relaxed, he's funny, he takes the props that the photographer gives him and has fun with them - he's obviously not taking himself too seriously. Working and socialising together, Schatzberg would eventually do nine more photo shoots with Dylan from 1965-6, arguably the singer's most creative period, and capture the (now) Nobel laureate during one of the most pivotal moments in music history. Part of their uniqueness is their basic broad range of intimate and public locations: music and photography studios, live performances and street portraits. But more than that, each session (including the one for possibly his greatest album, 'Blonde on Blonde') says something different about Dylan, the man and the musician, and manages to perfectly capture the many facets of one of the most unique, complex and mysterious individuals of all time.Trade ReviewMany of his photographs are chronicled in the new book, aptly titled Dylan by Schatzberg, which features a treasure trove of both famed and rare images of the icon.--Billboard Jerry Schatzberg shot everybody who was anybody in the '60s, from Hendrix to Castro, and went on to make great movies.
