Reading The Last Hunters is sure to change that - Eastern Daily PressI put it aside for late summer reading but couldn''t put it down. [Candy Whittome] has caught the voices and that East Anglian up-beat realism... Brilliant - Richard MabeyCandy Whittome and David Morris''s book pays tribute to the crabmen of Cromer. The photographs are beautifully composed, and the descriptions of the people interviewed full of affection. But what makes the book special is the range of voices we hear natural storytellers, recounting tales of triumph and catastrophe - long days, rough seas, terrible accidents, glorious homecomings with a full catch - Blake MorrisonThe Last Hunters is a contemporary portrait of one of the last surviving fishing communities in Britain. The book tells the stories of the Cromer crab fishermen and their families in their own words, accompanied by David Morris'' stunning black-and-white photographs. Book SynopsisBeing There is a collection of photographic portraits of, and interviews with, NYU medical students who volunteered in the New York City Medical Examiner's morgue following 9/11. Dr. Barry Goldstein, who was the Master Scholars Artist-in-Residence during the 2001-2002 academic year, took the photos and conducted the interviews. The volume includes a foreword by Charles Hirsch M.D., the Chief Medical Examiner of the City of New York, who ran the massive effort to identify remains.Being There is a collection of photographic portraits of, and interviews with, NYU medical students who volunteered in the New York City Medical Examiner's morgue following 9/11, conducted by Barry Goldstein, and with a foreword by Charles Hirsch, M.D., the Chief Medical Examiner of the City of New York, who ran the massive effort to identify remains. Within 24 hours of the attacks, a complex of tents and refrigerated trucks appeared on 30th St. and 1st Ave, adjacent to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner [OCME]. This makeshift compound housed the temporary morgues that would receive human remains recovered from Ground Zero. Approximately twenty NYU medical students volunteered to work alongside the understaffed OCME, sorting, cataloguing, and identifying human remains. Most of these students had been in medical school for only a few weeks. In June of 2002, Dr. Goldstein photographed and interviewed the volunteers, asking them to describe what they did, what they would remember, how they coped, and how they were changed by the experience. Barry M. Goldstein is Associate Professor of Biochemistry and Biophysics, Associate Professor of Medical Humanities at the University of Rochester Medical Center, and Adjunct Professor of Humanism in Medicine at NYU School of Medicine. He was Artist-in-Residence at the NYU School of Medicine during the 2001-2002 academic year.Trade ReviewDr. Goldstein's book gives us a fascinating glimpse into what it meant to be a medical student participant in the forensic investigation of the World Trade Center disaster, the largest mass murder in the history of the United States. -- -- Charles S. Book SynopsisIn a follow-up to the popular The New Paris, Lindsey Tramuta explores the impact that the women of Paris have had on the rapidly evolving culture of their city. The New Parisienne focuses on one of the city’s most prominent features, its women. Lifting the veil on the mythologized Parisian woman—white, lithe, ever fashionable—journalist Lindsey Tramuta demystifies this oversimplified archetype and recasts the women of Paris as they truly are, in all their complexity. Featuring 50 activists, creators, educators, visionaries, and disruptors—like Leïla Slimani, Lauren Bastide, and Mayor Anne Hidalgo—the book reveals Paris as a blossoming cultural center of feminine power. Both the featured women and Tramuta herself offer up favorite destinations and women-owned businesses, including beloved shops, artistic venues, bistros, and more. The New Parisienne showcases “Parisianness” in all its multiTrade Review“Like the subjects of her book, Lindsey Tramuta is a force. The New Parisienne is the go-to chronicle of the joyful, progressive, pioneering women of a city that Tramuta understands with deep intelligence.” -- Lauren Collins, bestselling author of When in French and staff writer for The New Yorker“With stunning photographs and inspiring profiles, Lindsey Tramuta tramples the myths and takes us into the lives of real Parisiennes. Bravo!” -- Pamela Druckerman, author of Bringing Up Bébé and There Are No Grown-Ups“Lindsey Tramuta’s ongoing project to chronicle and distinguish the living and evolving Paris from the memory museum it competes with is as ambitious as it is infectious. Here she narrows her focus to one of France’s most enduring and alluring clichés: the Parisian woman. The New Parisienne radically reintroduces—and humanizes—this impossible icon in all of her complexity, as she really lives today. Spoiler alert: She is someone you will want to get to know.” -- Thomas Chatterton Williams, author of Self-Portrait in Black and White“Some of my favorite Parisiennes are in this book. Lindsey Tramuta beautifully gives a voice to a very rich and diverse set of women who make Paris the incredible place it is today. This book is precious: It shatters the tired cliché of the white and skinny Parisian.” -- Aida Alami, journalist and contributor to the New York Times and Our Women on the Ground“The New Parisienne is an important book for anyone interested in how intersectional feminism is faring in the land of Simone de Beauvoir. Guess what: It’s thriving. And Lindsey Tramuta is an excellent guide, and a thorough and sensitive observer of and commentator on contemporary France, not to mention one badass feminist.” -- Lauren Elkin, author of Flâneuse“Lindsey Tramuta sweeps away the tired clichés of the Parisian woman with her vivid profiles of the dynamic and creative ‘femmes’ now powering the French capital. Reading her book made me want to go out and rediscover the City of Light in all its compelling diversity!” -- Eleanor Beardsley, NPR Paris correspondent“Want to know what real Parisian women are like? Read this book. Lindsey Tramuta rips the corset off the notion that all Parisiennes are thin, white, and casually elegant in a way no other women in the world can be. She gives us real Parisiennes: feisty, smart, ethnically diverse, passionately engaged in their work. And she tells us where to find their favorite spots in a city that is far more interesting and dynamic than the stale images peddled to tourists and global consumers.” -- Mira Kamdar, award-winning author and former Paris-based member of the New York Times editorial board

Book SynopsisAfrican American Faces of the Civil War makes an important contribution to a comparatively understudied aspect of the war and provides a fascinating look into lives that helped shape America.Trade ReviewCoddington's use of African American-owned newspapers and pension records is groundbreaking. It does nothing to diminish the depth and precision of Coddington's research to say that each compelling vignette prompts the reader to hurriedly flip to the next one. Publishers Weekly (starred review) An engaging look at a neglected part of the history of the American Civil War. -- Vanessa Bush Booklist African American Faces of the Civil War: An Album serves us well to remind us of those who came before and honor them. -- Sara Rosen Le Journal de la Photographie With the plethora of Civil War books that focus on battles, regiments, and the famous, this volume's subject matter and format are a welcome counterpoint. Library Journal A stunning album of 77 portrait photographs-cartes de visite, ambrotypes and tintypes... African American Faces of the Civil War provides a unique visual record, quite literally documenting the faces of war at a transitional moment in U.S. history. Lincoln's black warriors helped to overthrow slavery and to restore the Union. Their descendants spent the next century fighting new battles for true equality. -- John David Smith Charlotte Observer Coddington's thoughtfully crafted and cogently written study, replete with an insightful foreword by J. Matthew Gallman on the African-American experience, will appeal to readers interested in the efforts of African Americans and the war's larger military, social and global consequences. -- Jonathan A. Noyalas Civil War News Coddington highlights the bravery of African American soldiers at a time when many considered them to be cowards, and shows the Civil War from the perspective of African Americans fighting for freedom, dignity, respect, and equality. Choice A fascinating work that captures the soldiers at a moment when they proudly served a country that was only just then beginning to reassess their citizenship rights. Because they risked everything to fight for emancipation and the Union, the Civil War's African-American soldiers deserve to never be forgotten. Coddington's work will help to ensure that that no one will ever need to be reminded that 'there were men of color who... fought.' -- Glenn David Brasher Civil War Monitor The sesquicentennial observance of the Civil War era will be marked by numerous publications of works. Few book will be as fascinating and informative as African American Faces of the Civil War... This third book on soldiers in the Civil War, African American Faces of the Civil War, is a well-documented and a valuable work, It is an outstanding contribution to the scholarship on the Civil War and African American History in general. Civil War Book Review African American Faces of the Civil War, like the photographs it presents, captures the moment when black men in America transitioned from slaves to soldiers and the Civil War became about more than merely preserving the Union. Unlike any single photograph, however, Coddington's book depicts this moment from a diverse variety of perspectives -- Kelly Erby Kansas History Coddington exposes the good and the bad... The book is a must-read for all Civil War buffs and contains important historical data to complete a full circumference of Civil War history. Daguerrian Society All those who are fascinated by Civil war photography or black history in general will find this volume to be a most enjoyable read. The book helps us to remember that during the Civil War a significant number of black men were willing to fight for their freedom or to help secure freedom for their fellow African Americans. -- Roger D. Cunningham Journal of America's Military Past In developing parallels between the control of one's image in narratives and the use of the photograph as biography, Coddington makes a compelling argument for the reader to rethink the place of photography in telling history. His use of photographs as visual text allows the reader to reimagine history through the photographer's leans. This book maps new methodologies for researching and writing about photographs and plumbs the hidden history of the Civil War narrative. -- Deborah Willis Indiana Magazine of History African American Faces of the Civil War is just lovely. The prose is fast-paced but personal, and readers will feel as if these soldiers are telling their stories in their own words. Book SynopsisIn Bloodflowers W. Ian Bourland examines the photography of Rotimi Fani-Kayode (1955–1989), whose art is a touchstone for cultural debates surrounding questions of gender and queerness, race and diaspora, aesthetics and politics, and the enduring legacy of slavery and colonialism. Born in Nigeria, Fani-Kayode moved between artistic and cultural worlds in Washington, DC, New York, and London, where he produced the bulk of his provocative and often surrealist and homoerotic photographs of black men. Bourland situates Fani-Kayode''s work in a time of global transition and traces how it exemplified and responded to profound social, cultural, and political change. In addition to his formal analyses of Fani-Kayode''s portraiture, Bourland outlines the important influence that surrealism, neo-Romanticism, Yoruban religion, the AIDS crisis, experimental film, loft culture, and house and punk music had on Fani-Kayode''s work. In so doing, Bourland offers new perspectives on a Trade Review"Recommended. Upper-division undergraduates through faculty and professionals." -- E. Book SynopsisA NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER. It’s time to celebrate boys. Against the backdrop of a growing national conversation about how to raise sons to become good people, Kate T. Parker is leading the way by turning her lens on boys. Author of the bestselling book about girls Strong Is the New Pretty, she now shows the true heart of a boy in 200 compelling photographs. Boys can be wild. But they can also be gentle. Bursting with confidence, but not afraid to be vulnerable. Ready to run fearlessly downfield—or reach out to a friend in need. In this empowering, deeply felt celebration of boys being—and believing in—themselves, see the unguarded joy of a little brother hugging his big brother. The inquisitive look of a young scientist examining a bug. The fearless self-expression in a ballet dancer’s poise. There are guitarists, fencers, wrestlers, stargazers, a pilot. Boys who aspire to be president, and boys whose lives are full of overwhelming challenges, yet who bravely face each day as it comes. With inspiring and joyful quotes from the boys themselves, this book spreads a heartfelt, uplifting message of openness, self-confidence, and warmth. “Kate T. Parker’s incredible Strong Is the New Pretty helped us reimagine girlhood as silly, messy, spirited, and fun. Now she turns her perceptive lens on the other sex to expand our definition of what it means to be a boy . . . and presents something desperately needed in our well-meaning cultural conversation about boys—she shows us their enormous, wonderful hearts.”—Michael Ian Black, actor and writer “Silly, serious, nerdy, athletic, creative, bold—the adjectives describing boys could go on for pages. But if boys are to grow up to be admirable men, the one thing they must be is kind. Kate T. Parker’s book helps clear the way for a time when everyone understands that.” — R. J. Muriu takes us on a colorful, reflective journey through her world as a woman living in modern Kenya as she reinterprets contemporary African portraiture. As the sole woman operating in the male-dominated advertising photography industry in Kenya, Thandiwe Muriu has repeatedly confronted questions around the role of women in society, the place of tradition, and her own self-perception. These experiences inspired her personal project of cultural reflection: the Camo series. Camo was the catalyst for her to push new boundaries in her photography, leading her into a deeply personal artistic journey. For the last two decades, Peter Cohen has been combing estate sales and flea markets collecting vernacular, or found, photography taken in the middle part of the twentieth century. In his collection are countless images of women of all ages in various unconventional activities for the time: there are women swigging booze out of a bottle, boxing, playing pick-up football, smoking, or shooting arrows or guns—incongruous and playful behavior, all the while often performed in lovely dresses. Snapshots of Dangerous Women collects many of these period photographs, showcasing women from the thirties, forties, and fifties who are equal parts badass and rebellious, and, above all, clearly having a lot of fun. This charming book makes the ideal gift for the bold and free-spirited women in our lives.Trade Review"[Snapshots of Dangerous Women] lets us look into the past--the early to middle part of the twentieth century--with wit and understated humor. . . . We get a satisfying number of young and not-so-young femmes fatales, vixens, and vamps, posing, mincing, moping, strutting their stuff, inclining languorously, smoking, moping, and flirting with the camera as if to say, 'I never thought this could feel so good...' [while] the introduction by Mia Fineman is a parallel collection of funny and poignant quotes and definitions of who they are, these unkosher ladies." -Huffington Post"What does a 'dangerous woman' look like? After over a decade of rifling through flea market boxes and garage sales, art collector Peter J. Cohen may have the answer. [Vintage photographs reveal] women riding rodeo horses, sporting men’s coats, and slugging down beers in the most 'unladylike fashion' for the time period they were taken in." -Buzzfeed.com"A dangerous woman doesn't break the rules - she makes them. . . . In Snapshots of Dangerous Women, a charming book of found photographs dating from the first half of the 20th century and assembled by Peter J. Cohen, anonymous young women are pictured doing all the things ladies did not do." -W Magazine"Filled with original photographs of women hunting, driving cars, smoking, wearing men's clothes and drinking alcohol at times when the behavior was prohibited, [Rizzoli's Snapshots of Dangerous Women] is emblematic of the strength and vivacity of women." -Harper's Bazaar"Over the course of two decades, Cohen has amassed a stunning collection of more than 60,000 vintage photographs of women." -Washington Post

Book SynopsisINDIEFAB Book of the Year Awards -- 2014 FinalistOn the occasion of Blondie’s fortieth anniversary, Chris Stein shares his iconic and mostly unpublished photographs of Debbie Harry and the cool creatures of the ’70s and ’80s New York rock scene. While a student at the School of Visual Arts, Chris Stein photographed the downtown New York scene of the early ’70s, where he met Deborah Harry and cofounded Blondie. Their blend of punk, dance, and hip-hop spawned a totally new sound, and Stein’s photographs helped establish Harry as an international fashion and music icon. In photos and stories direct from Stein, brilliant writer of hits like Rapture and Heart of Glass, this book provides a fascinating snapshot of the period before and during Blondie’s huge rise, by someone who was part of and who helped to shape the early punk music scene—at CBGB, Andy Warhol’s Factory, and early Bowery. Stars such as David Bowie, the Ramones, JTrade Review“Since Blondie formed 40 years ago, one thing has remained constant: if the band’s co-founder Chris Stein isn’t onstage with a guitar slung around his neck, chances are he’s off somewhere with a camera, taking pictures. Now, the results of his four-decade-long hobby have been compiled in a new book, Chris Stein/Negative: Me, Blondie, and the Advent of Punk…Though the photographs in the book span the band’s four decades, they’re rooted mostly in the punk scene that emerged in the ’70s and ’80s, paralleling Blondie’s rise. Looking at them, it’s easy to imagine how much fun the duo had not just making pictures, but also making music. The pictures…capture the essence of a lost, romantic moment in New York history.” –New York Times T Magazine"[One of the] best books of the year" –American Photo “…Chris Stein/Negative: Me, Blondie, and the Advent of Punk, an art book being published to coincide with the band’s 40th anniversary. The book contains scores of photos, many of them never before published, of Blondie, the Ramones, the Talking Heads and other pioneers of the 1970s New York City rock scene. That aesthetic comes through in Stein’s unfussy, mostly black-and-white images, which capture Harry, David Bowie, Joan Jett and other musicians in spontaneous, revealing moments.” –CNN “In 1974, New York City was the home to a potent burgeoning punk and new wave scene. Blondie’s Chris Stein was there for all of it: his guitar in one hand, his camera in the other. As Blondie celebrates its 40th anniversary, Stein is releasing his first book of photographs, Chris Stein/Negative: Me, Blondie, and the Advent of Punk, which documents his life on stage, on the road and at home, including portraits of his friends who made the downtown scene: Iggy Pop, David Bowie, Andy Warhol, Joan Jett, Jean Michael Basquiat and many more.” –Time Magazine “To commemorate the 40th anniversary of Blondie, Chris Stein is releasing his treasure trove of his photographs from the New York City music scene of the 1970s and early 1980s in his new book, Chris Stein/Negative: Me, Blondie, and the Advent of Punk.” –Smithsonian “Hearken back to the era of punk and new wave music with these snapshots. Chris Stein was at the center of the burgeoning punk/new wave scene in 1970s New York City as the lead guitarist for Blondie. Cutting edge bands such as Talking Heads, the Ramones and Television were establishing their sound at clubs like the now-defunct CBGB. And as a member of one of the leading groups on the scene and a recent photography graduate of New York’s School of Visual Arts, Stein was uniquely positioned to document the musical pioneers of that time and place.” –Hollywood Reporter “…Chris Stein, has released a new photography book remembering its glory days. Though Stein claims to have thousands of photographs in his archives, the way he describes his photographic process is surprisingly casual. Chris Stein / Negative: Me, Blondie, and the Advent of Punk, chronicles the early punk scene, featuring not only rare photos of Debbie Harry, but also Joan Jett, Iggy Pop, the Ramones, and Andy Warhol.” –New York Magazine“Blondie guitarist and songwriter Chris Stein released the almost self-titled Chris Stein / Negative, a handsome photobook featuring shots that begin in the mid-Seventies and end with a picture of Debbie Harry and Philip Glass taken at Lou Reed's memorial service.” –Rolling Stone Magazine"Less than a month after the release of Chris Stein/Negative: Me, Blondie, and the Advent of Punk, the coffee table debut from Blondie's co-founding member went on backorder. In case there was any doubt, that's how beloved they still are—40 years into their career." –Vice"Chris Stein/Negative: Me, Blondie, and the Advent of Punk, culls from Stein’s private collection going back to the early 1970s, with cameos by the Ramones, Joan Jett, Iggy Pop, and William S. Burroughs, among others. Harry, though, lures you in, every inch the glamorous rock star but also at ease in candid settings. " -Boston Globe"I’m loving the new book of largely never-before-seen Blondie photographs from Chris Stein, out now from Rizzoli. So. Cool. " –The Fashion Spot "On the occasion of the band’s 40th anniversary year, Chris Stein/Negative: Me, Blondie, and the Advent of Punk offers a revealing look back at one of the most trailblazing and influential bands of our time and the punk scene that they pioneered. From Blondie’s early days, to their world travels and sold-out shows, to their legendary musical counterparts, it is all shown from the inside view of Chris Stein." -Life and Times"Along with the iconic Debbie Harry, Chris Stein is the driving force behind the influential ’70s punk/New Wave group Blondie. In addition to his talents as a guitarist and songwriter for the group, Stein is an accomplished photographer, as demonstrated in this new book. It not only features photos of Blondie throughout the ’70s to mid-80s, but also captures the mood and feel of New York City in throes of the punk rock scene defined by landmarks such as CBGB and the Mudd Club. The book also includes photos Stein took of city scene-sters like Basiquat, Richard Hell and Stephen Sprouse as well as fellow bands such as the Ramones, the New York Dolls, and Siouxie and the Banshees." -Brooklyn Based“With this anniversary, Chris Stein, guitarist for the band, has released his book, showcasing a grungier New York and documenting Blondie’s road to success. While Debbie Harry, singer for Blondie and Stein’s former girlfriend, remains the star of this book, Stein also captured some of the most influential punkers and rockers to come out of NYC’s music underground. Every picture tells a story, and along with his snaps, Stein has plenty of stories.” –NewYork.com

Book SynopsisThe establishment of the Islamic Republic of Iran in 1979 meant women were forced to wear the hijab and photographs of them uncovered were forbidden. As a result, many photographers'' studios were burnt to the ground, while remaining archives of invaluable glass-plate negatives were left to moulder in attics. Parisa Damandan spent over ten years accumulating an impressive collection of pioneering photographs from the early twentieth century, in her hometown of Isfahan. Recently emancipated women posing in various state of dress, Polish war refugees on their tortuous journey home after fleeing the Nazis, men in fashionable hats or in traditional turbans and cloaks - these portraits offer a remarkable window on the changing face of Iranian society during a period of transition from a traditional to a modern culture. Alongside these stunning images are essays on the development of portraiture in Isfahan, the social dimensions of portrait photography in Iran, and the power of the gaze.Trade Review'Excellent ... beautifully produced.' The Middle East in London 'Reveals as much about how photographers worked in the first half of the 20th century as it does about how people in those times saw themselves, how the identity of a nation took shape, fell apart and reformed against a backdrop of industrialization, modernity, political change and looming revolution and upheaval.' They are explorations into raw emotions, looking at female characters at a crossroads, and how they move forward (or don’t) after heartbreak,’ say the authors. ‘The stories are about relationship endings, but they are also about beginnings.
