  • Diane Arbus: Revelations

    Aperture Diane Arbus: Revelations

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisTo ensure the ongoing availability of Diane Arbus Revelations, Aperture is proud to release this vitally important volume on the fiftieth anniversary of the posthumous 1972 Arbus retrospective at the Museum of Modern Art and the simultaneous publication of Diane Arbus: An Aperture Monograph. Revelations explores the origins, scope, and aspirations of Arbus's wholly original voice. Arbus’s frank treatment of her subjects and her faith in the intrinsic power of the medium have produced a body of work that is often shocking in its purity, in its steadfast celebration of things as they are. Presenting many of her lesser-known or previously unpublished photographs in the context of the iconic images reveals a subtle yet persistent view of the world. The book reproduces two hundred full-page duotones of Diane Arbus photographs spanning her entire career. It also includes a new contribution by Sarah Meister, executive director of Aperture, alongside essays by Sandra S. Phillips, senior curator of photography, emeritus, at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, and a discussion of Arbus’s printing techniques by Neil Selkirk, the only person authorized to print her photographs since her death. An extensive chronology by Elisabeth Sussman, guest curator of the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art show, and Doon Arbus, the artist’s eldest daughter, is illustrated by more than three hundred additional images and composed primarily of excerpts from the artist’s letters, notebooks, and other writings, amounting to a kind of autobiography. An afterword by Doon Arbus precedes biographical entries on the photographer’s friends and colleagues, compiled by Jeff L. Rosenheim, curator in charge of the Department of Photographs at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York. These texts help illuminate the meaning of Diane Arbus’s controversial and astonishing vision.

Simon & Schuster Vivian Maier Developed: The Untold Story of the

    2 in stock

Book SynopsisThe definitive biography that unlocks the remarkable story of Vivian Maier, the nanny who lived secretly as a world-class photographer, featuring nearly 400 of her images, many never seen before, placed for the first time in the context of her life. Vivian Maier, the photographer nanny whose work was famously discovered in a Chicago storage locker, captured the imagination of the world with her masterful images and mysterious life. Before posthumously skyrocketing to global fame, she had so deeply buried her past that even the families she lived with knew little about her. No one could relay where she was born or raised, if she had parents or siblings, if she enjoyed personal relationships, why she took photographs and why she didn’t share them with others. Now, in this definitive biography, Ann Marks uses her complete access to Vivian’s personal records and archive of 140,000 photographs to reveal the full story of her extraordinary life. Based on meticulous investigative research, Vivian Maier Developed reveals the story of a woman who fled from a family with a hidden history of illegitimacy, bigamy, parental rejection, substance abuse, violence, and mental illness to live life on her own terms. Left with a limited ability to disclose feelings and form relationships, she expressed herself through photography, creating a secret portfolio of pictures teeming with emotion, authenticity, and humanity. With limitless resilience she knocked down every obstacle in her way, determined to improve her lot in life and that of others by tirelessly advocating for the rights of workers, women, African Americans, and Native Americans. No one knew that behind the detached veneer was a profoundly intelligent, empathetic, and inspired woman—a woman so creatively gifted that her body of work would become one of the greatest photographic discoveries of the century.Trade Review"[Marks brings] a panoply of talents: extraordinary sleuthing skills, intuition, resourcefulness and persistence; profound empathy; an astute visual aesthetic and highly developed powers of observation; and last but not least, a logical and lucid prose style....Considering hardly a thing was known about Maier when Marks began her project, her achievement in documenting Maier's peregrinations and troubles with such clarity and feeling is remarkable...[Vivian Maier] would likely love — the astounding work Marks herself has done in creating this biography. You will surely close this excellent book feeling inspired." —The Washington Post"A gorgeous artifact that deepens our understanding of the mystery and then methodically unravels it. Far and away the most complete picture we have of the photographer to date." —The Wall Street Journal"Vivian Maier Developed is a thorough, fascinating overview of an artist working for art's sake. Marks tells Maier’s life with the intimacy of a scrapbook. Her selection of photographs, artifacts, and documents is judicious and satisfying.” —The New York Times“An engrossing and beautiful biography highlighted by Maier’s exceptional photographs.” —Newsday"Best Book of the Month. This compelling book benefits from Marks’ dogged research. She poured through Maier’s combined archive of 140,000 photos…and tackles the central mystery that has remained since the discovery of her work.” —Christian Science Monitor"Astonishing."—People "A book not to miss."—USA Today"Riveting. A best holiday book to give."—Vogue"What Ann Marks does so brilliantly...is to discover the singularly private woman behind the camera and the tragic events that shaped her to become one of the 20th century's premier street photographers. What makes the book such a revelation is how Marks matches biography with photographs, some 400 images." —Graydon Carter's Air Mail magazine"Unstinting reportage that reads like a mystery." —Chicago Review of BooksWriting the true story of Vivian Maier's life....and suggesting what we think we know about Vivian Maier is wrong." —Chicago Magazine "Ann Marks's book paints an intimate portrait of the photographer, accompanied by images that build to a crescendo of emotion once you understand their context....a great accomplishment." —Blind, Photography at First Sight"This definitive account will leave readers in awe."—Publisher's Weekly Starred Review"Compelling and richly detailed, this book sheds new and important light on an intriguing photographer and her singular life. A well—researched and incisive biography."—Kirkus Starred Review"Marks opens doors and fits scattered pieces together, illustrating her precise narrative and thoughtful analysis with nearly 400 of Vivian Maier's stunning, witty, and unnerving portraits, self—portraits, and street photographs, many published here for the first time." —Booklist Starred Review"With the wit and tenacity of a Sherlock, Ann Marks brings the mystery of Vivian Maier's life into vivid focus. By turns illuminating, inspiring, and tragic, her intensely caring and deeply researched biography reveals how Maier developed as a woman and the artist who remains in our minds as an enduring, formidable, and creative force." Book SynopsisIn his distinguished career as a Hollywood photographer, Bob Willoughby captured Marilyn Monroe, Elizabeth Taylor and Jane Fonda, but remains unequivocal about his favorite subject: Audrey Kathleen Ruston, later Edda van Heemstra Hepburn-Ruston, best known as Audrey Hepburn. Willoughby was called in to shoot the new starlet one morning shortly after she arrived in Hollywood in 1953. It was a humdrum commission for the portraitist often credited with having perfected the photojournalistic movie still, but when he met the Belgian-born beauty, Willoughby was enraptured. “She took my hand like… well a princess, and dazzled me with that smile that God designed to melt mortal men’s hearts,” he recalled. As Hepburn’s career soared following her Oscar-winning US debut in Roman Holiday, Willoughby became a trusted friend, framing her working and home life. His historic, perfectionist, tender photographs seek out the many facets of Hepburn’s beauty and elegance, as she progresses from her debut to her career high of My Fair Lady in 1963. Willoughby’s studies, showing her on set, preparing for a scene, interacting with actors and directors, and returning to her private life, comprise one of photography’s great platonic love affairs and an unrivalled record of one of the 20th century’s touchstone beauties.Trade ReviewWith one of Hollywood's greatest studio photographers behind the camera-and its most beautiful actress in front of it-Bob Willoughby's picture-perfect Audrey Hepburn book is a real collector's item. * Sunday Express *

Book Synopsis"This fun book may not be specifically dedicated to photography, but it’s an unusual and enjoyable read – and, obviously, very cool." — Black And White Photography Cool. Whether it's a cool guy, cool sunglasses, or a cool film - the attribute 'cool', which until the early '90s was still the definitive identifier of rebellious youth culture speech, is now encountered globally and across all social classes in an almost inflationary manner. The adjective 'cool' is now regarded as a vague paraphrase for something positively casual and is particularly fond of offering itself to us with an aura of self-confident modernity and stylistic confidence. Unfortunately, whoever says 'cool' today often just means a fashion word, representative of who or what is currently hip and what is not. Everything that is somehow hip, trendy or 'in' is called 'cool'. Everything should, and everyone wants, to be cool. On the one hand, 'coolness' is an empty buzzword, on the other hand, it is a self-confident, late-modern individual attitude and behavioural strategy with rebellious roots against a twisted and unjust world. Trade Review"… a holistic view, researches and collages history and stories, talks to interdisciplinary experts about backgrounds and developments, characteristics and criteria, identifies with you the icons and personalities that so strikingly shape our modern image of coolness." - Collectors Car World"This fun book may not be specifically dedicated to photography, but it’s an unusual and enjoyable read – and, obviously, very cool." - Black And White Photography"When it comes to coolness, these two are way up there: the “King of Cool” Steve McQueen and Snoopy, a.k.a. “Joe Cool”." - Ramp"What does it mean “to be cool”? Michael Köckritz finds the answer through research and collaging history and stories, talking to interdisciplinary experts and identifying the icons and personalities that so strikingly shape our modern image of coolness." - Knightsbridge"...blending documentary style exploration with artistic flair, delves into the layers of coolness in everything from movies to individuals, providing both amusement and profound insights into all its sexy, ground breaking, and often rebellious beauty." - Indulge Magazine

Book SynopsisThis project began in America, 2013: authors Erika Z. Figabomba and Alessandra Tisato drove from Nevada to the Bay Area, via San Diego, taking over 10,000 photos of beautiful, powerful women and non-binary people. These photographs do not only celebrate beauty in a way that is far from the polished, glossy images of fashion and advertising; they also explore the meaning of nakedness in a society that seems to prioritise superficial entertainment over women/non-binary sexuality and overall body positivity. B.A.D. Beautiful And Determined, with 224 pages and more than 100 colour photographs, is a celebration of beauty, determination and empowerment free from all genders and stereotypes. The book also contains critical texts by Carlotta Cossutta, a researcher in political philosophy, who works on feminism and queer theories in and out of academia and Elle Stanger, a queer person who writes sex education, short stories and advice columns that work to reduce shame and harm related to sexuality and touch.

  • The Debt Project: 99 Portraits Across America

Graphic Arts Books The Debt Project: 99 Portraits Across America

Book SynopsisFEATURED IN THE NEW YORKER: The Faces of Americans Living in DebtFinalist for the Dorothea Lange/Paul Taylor Prize in Documentary.Featured on Politico, in the Washington Post, the Daily Mail, and the Huffington Post, USA Today, Business Insider, Refinery29, and Fast Company.Based on the popular online photo series and now published in print for the first time, The Debt Project collects 99 portraits of debt across the United States, featuring people of all different backgrounds and stories, to recontextualize an often stigmatized experience. In 2013, Brittany Powell made the difficult decision to file for bankruptcy for her photography business. In the years following the 2008 economic collapse, she found herself in a significant amount of debt, a position many Americans across the country still share, a common yet isolating and private experience often steeped in shame. Her personal experience, bolstered by the We Are the 99% slogan that came out of the Occupy movement, brought her to start The Debt Project, an exploration of the role debt and finance plays in our personal identity and social structure. This book presents an intimate look into 99 different lives: each shares an arrestingly honest portrait in the person’s home, surrounded by all their belongings, accompanied by a handwritten note of the amount of debt that person is in and the story behind the numbers. The Debt Project, with a foreword by writer and filmmaker Astra Taylor plus resources at the back of the book to support people in debt, examines the social and personal hold financial debt has on us and invites others into a private world, while at the same empowering people to share their stories and overcome the shame they may feel.Trade Review"A large sum of money owed can seem strangely incorporeal--it may weigh heavily while still feeling somehow abstract, unreal. Since shame accrues to debt as inexorably as interest, many people don't like to talk about the topic, rendering it even less visible. . . A good deal of the power in the new book The Debt Project: 99 Portraits Across America by the photographer Brittany M. Powell, comes from a kind of transgressive mundaneness. Powell set about photographing ninety-nine Americans who owe money (she ended up with a few more, including herself, but started with that figure as a reference to the slogan 'We are the ninety-nine per cent') and asked them to handwrite accompanying text about how much they owe, and to whom."--New Yorker"10 Riveting Photo Series That Are Helping to Make the World a Better Place: The inspiration behind these dramatic images will give you chills. Thanks to camera phones and social media, it seems like everyone fancies themselves an amateur photographer these days. Whether it's sharing a new recipe or showing off a new pair of shoes, picture-taking has never been more popular. But these professional photographers are using their talents for something a bit more profound. Well aware of the power of a photo, they're hoping to make the world a better place for veterans, mothers, pets and more--one picture at a time. If there's one thing no one likes, it's debt. After filing for bankruptcy in 2012, photographer Brittany Powell took a deeper look at the role of debt in our society. She created The Debt Project, a photo series that features portraits of debt-laden people in their homes, and the stories behind their hefty dues. Powell wants to open up the conversation of this highly stigmatized issue, and her goal is to photograph 99 people in the U.S. She also plans on publishing a book that details their stories."--Woman's Day"Powell allows her photographs to speak for themselves, illustrating the strife faced by many who pursued their dreams only to end up faced with insurmountable financial obligations. As one contributor laments, 'I wake up everyday [sic] and try to be a person. To afford to be a person. Who feels like me. I am trying on empty.' Given the diversity of circumstances as well as levels of debt, this artistic project will resonate with any American who faces debt and any of the other injustices involved with income inequality. A moving, humanitarian exposé on the isolation and despair of financial hardship."--Kirkus Reviews"New ways of seeing art with an eye toward diversity and inclusivity are among this season's themes. . . Based on the online photo series that Powell began after she filed for bankruptcy for her photography business, this book brings together portraits taken in each subject's home, surrounded by all their belongings, how much they owe, and the story behind the numbers."--Publishers Weekly"The Debt Project reveals the human faces and stories behind the numbers and statistics. What does debt look like? It is not just a number on a past-due notice. Debt looks like a human being. It looks like a mother taking out a title loan on her car, a child denied nourishment because her parents owe the school 'lunch debt,' a senior citizen having their tax returns garnished to settle a judgement, a patient jailed because they can’t pay their hospital bill. . . [Powell] uses her camera to challenge preconceptions. The subjects featured in this book have a grace and dignity. They are in their homes, sometimes looking into the lens but often gazing toward the distance. They do not appear guilty or repentant, but honest, sympathetic, and unashamed. This is vital, because for centuries debtors were regarded as criminals who could be locked away and denied their basic democratic rights. Debtors, it was believed, deserved to be punished, a dehumanizing attitude that lingers on today. . . I hope Powell's powerful and empowering photographs will give more people the courage to do so."--Astra Taylor (from the foreword)

Book SynopsisPeople magazine's top reason for Hope in America.Curated from a grassroots social movement, The Front Steps Project is an inspiring, uplifting portrait series capturing how people coped with living in isolation during the COVID-19 pandemic. The Front Steps Project™ demonstrates that even in the most challenging of circumstances, kindness, love, courage, and hope exist to build, bind, and connect communities around the globe.Created on March 18, 2020, The Front Steps Project™ began when friends Kristen Collins and Cara Soulia sought out to unite their neighbors through photographs of life in quarantine. In addition to incorporating work from other local photographers, the women traveled to neighborhoods around Needham, Massachusetts to photograph residents in front of their homes in exchange for donations to their local food pantry.Within days, #TheFrontStepsProject became a grassroots social mission, connecting thousands of people across the globe and raising over $3,250,000 for vital non-profit organizations and local businesses including food pantries, frontline workers, homeless and animal shelters, hospitals and so much more. Through their noble efforts, hundreds of thousands of images and stories of love, sacrifice, compassion, kindness, perseverance, and – ultimately hope – flooded social media.Featured on Good Morning America, The Today Show, People Magazine, The Wall Street Journal, The Boston Globe and more, The Front Steps Project brings communities together virtually, despite being – and maybe feeling – isolated. The Front Steps Project contains over 400 photographs and dozens of stories of families during the COVID-19 pandemic. This heartwarming keepsake commemorates a massive effort of courage, unity, and goodwill. As a tribute to the good work of The Front Steps Project, a portion of book sales will be donated to The United Way to help people impacted by the pandemic.Trade Review“A little idea between two women became a viral grassroots voluntary movement overnight.” * People Magazine (about The Front Steps Project) *“With so many feeling isolated or disconnected from friends, family and the rest of the world these days, something as simple as a happy photograph can keep us going.” * CNN (about The Front Steps Project) *“Relatives and friends united by the coronavirus pandemic are documenting their time together with casual group photographs – all inspired by The Front Steps Project.” * Wall Street Journal (about The Front Steps Project) *"As families isolate in close quarters, they could use a breath of fresh air and spark of joy. That's why photographers Cara Soulia and Kristen Collins launched The Front Steps Project as a way to cheer folks up, while helping members of their community." * The Obama Foundation (about The Front Steps Project) *"Send Joy During a Stressful Year With a Holiday Card: For Ms. Staten, that meant purchasing red masks (she hot-glued white fuzzy Santa trim to her husband’s) and enlisting a local photographer to capture her family of five from 10 feet away. Even that style of portraiture is a cultural outcrop of the pandemic: The photographer, Rachna Agrawal, first photographed the Statens for the Front Steps Project, for which photographers around the world captured socially distanced images of families as a way to raise funds for local nonprofits and small businesses." * New York Times *"25 Reasons for Hope in America in 2020: In these uncertain times, a celebration of creative people, inspiring acts, natural beauty and much-needed good news. #1 The Front Steps Project. During the early days of quarantine, friends Kristen Collins and Cara Soulia began photographing their Needham, Mass., community to foster connection and collect donations for small businesses. The project spread across the country, raising over $3.35 million and inspiring a photo book, out late November." * People magazine *

Book SynopsisThe first monograph by sculptor, filmmaker, and photographer Shikeith, Notes towards Becoming a Spill brings together a series of striking studio portraits of Black male subjects as they inhabit various states of meditation, prayer, and ecstasy. Shikeith describes the work as “leaning into the uncanny,” visualizing ritual and the process of excavating Black men’s erotic potential, the better to exorcise the “intangible presences that haunt their bodies and psyches.” The men’s faces and bodies glisten with sweat (and tears)—the manifestation and evidence of desire. This ecstasy is what critic Antwaun Sargent proclaims as “an ideal, a warm depiction that insists on concrete possibility for another world.” In this revelatory volume, Shikeith redefines the idea of sacred space and positions a Queer ethic identified by its investment in vulnerability, tenderness, and joy. Shikeith: Notes towards Becoming a Spill is made possible, in part, thanks to the generous contribution of 7G Foundation.
