Prestel Surf Like a Girl
Book SynopsisIf you thought surfing was a male-dominated sport, think again. The thirty women surfers profiled in this thrilling collection can rip a wave with the best of them. Hailing from all over the world, each surfer is featured in spectacular photography and with their own inspirational words. There’s American professional surfer Lindsay Steinriede on how her father’s death has inspired her career; French board shaper Valerie Duprat on how she got her start “sculpting foam”; Conchita Rossler, founder of Mooana Retreat in Portugal, on connecting mind, body, and spirit; and Australian photographer Cait Miers on empowering women. You’ll also meet surfers who are over sixty, who surf while pregnant, who captain boats, teach yoga, and make movies. Breathtaking photography captures these women from every angle, on and off the waves, in some of the world’s most visually stunning locations. The perfect gift for surfing enthusiasts, this unique compilation of stunning pictures and hard-won wisdom proves that the thrill of catching a wave, riding it, and kicking out belongs to everyone.Trade Review"…a stunningly gorgeous collection..."- Los Angeles Times"Someone has finally delivered a worthy homage to the role of women in surfing. Surf Like a Girl is a marvelous piece of work...What really impresses in this hardcover masterpiece is the perfect balance between each word poured into the pages, and the quality and grandiosity of the giant photos...It's fair to say that this 256-page book is probably the best title ever published exclusively dedicated to women's surfing. Get it and enjoy." –Surfer Today“gorgeously photographed…Admirers of surfing and underwater life will certainly find much to appreciate.”–Publishers Weekly“As for who’s riding those waves, increasingly, it’s women: among under-19s, there are more girls than boys surfing now, while the number of female surfers aged 65+ has soared 45 per cent since 2010. This growing global “surf sisterhood”—including a Moroccan Muslim surf coach and Sri Lanka’s first female longboarder—is profiled in a new coffee table tome by Carolina Amell called Surf Like a Girl, published by Prestel.” —Atlas

Book SynopsisIn the world of grand touring cars, Aston Martin occupies a special place. The English firm has always distinguished itself by its restraint, by the elegance of its creations, by the discretion of its style, by a reserve rarely observed in a universe that willingly abandons itself to exuberance. The history of Aston Martin over the past 70 years is organised around eight main designs. September Publishing North Korea: Like Nowhere Else: Two Years of
Book SynopsisAn extraordinary photographic exploration of North Korea, from a Westerner who lived in Pyongyang and explored the country beyond for nearly two years. What happens when you travel to a place where even basic truths are ambiguous? Where sometimes you can't trust your own eyes or feelings? Where the divide between real and imagined is never clear? For two years, Lindsey Miller lived in North Korea, long regarded as one of the most closed societies on earth. As one of Pyongyang's small community of resident foreigners, Lindsey was granted remarkable freedoms to experience the country without government minders. She had a front row seat as North Korea shot into the headlines during an unprecedented period of military tension with the US and the subsequent historic Singapore Summit. However, it was the connection with individuals and their families, and the day-to-day reality of control and repression, that delivered the real revelations of North Korean life, and which left Lindsey utterly changed from the woman who had nervously disembarked from her plane onto an empty runway just two years before. This is her extraordinary photographic account, a testament to the hidden humanity of North Korea.

FUEL Publishing Chernobyl: A Stalkers’ Guide
Book Synopsis 'An eerie record of disaster, absence, the power of nature and frozen time.' - Edwin Heathcote, in 'Best Books of 2020' Financial Times This photography-led book reveals the story of Chernobyl today, with unprecedented access to the Zone, it takes the reader into previously undocumented areas. Since the first atomic bomb was dropped, humankind has been haunted by the idea of nuclear apocalypse. That nightmare almost became reality in 1986, when an accident at the USSR’s Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant triggered the world’s worst radiological crisis. The events of that night are well documented – but history didn’t stop there. Chernobyl, as a place, remains very much alive today. In Chernobyl: A Stalkers’ Guide, researcher Darmon Richter journeys into the contemporary Exclusion Zone, venturing deeper than any previously published account. While thousands of foreign visitors congregate around a handful of curated sites, beyond the tourist hotspots lies a wild and mysterious land the size of a small country. In the forests of Chernobyl, historic village settlements and Soviet-era utopianism have lain abandoned since the time of the disaster – overshadowed by vast, unearthly mega-structures designed to win the Cold War. Richter combines photographs of discoveries made during his numerous visits to the Zone with the voices of those who witnessed history – engineers, scientists, police and evacuees. He explores evacuated regions in both Ukraine and Belarus, finding forgotten ghost towns and Soviet monuments lost deep in irradiated forests. He gains exclusive access inside the most secure areas of the power plant itself, and joins the ‘stalkers’ of Chernobyl as he sets out on a high-stakes illegal hike to the heart of the Exclusion Zone.Table of ContentsPrologue: The Dead City • Nightmares & Premonitions • Atomgrad • Wormwood Star • Chernobyl Tourism • Journey to the Centre of the Zone • Monumenteering • Belarus • The Room • Half-Life • Epilogue: The Anarcho-Vandal Rave Scene

Aperture The Photographer's Cookbook
Book SynopsisIn the late 1970s, the George Eastman House approached a group of photographers to ask for their favorite recipes and food-related photographs to go with them, in pursuit of publishing a cookbook. Playing off George Eastman’s own famous recipe for lemon meringue pie, as well as former director Beaumont Newhall’s love of food, the cookbook grew from the idea that photographers’ talent in the darkroom must also translate into special skills in the kitchen. The recipes do not disappoint, with Robert Adams’s Big Sugar Cookies, Ansel Adams’s Poached Eggs in Beer, Richard Avedon’s Royal Pot Roast, Imogen Cunningham’s Borscht, William Eggleston’s Cheese Grits Casserole, Stephen Shore’s Key Lime Pie Supreme, and Ed Ruscha’s Cactus Omelet, to name a few. The book was never published, and the materials have remained in George Eastman House’s collection ever since. Now, forty years later, this extensive and distinctive archive of untouched recipes and photographs are published in The Photographer’s Cookbook for the first time. The book provides a time capsule of contemporary photographers of the 1970s—many before they made a name for themselves—as well as a fascinating look at how they depicted food, family, and home, taking readers behind the camera and into the hearts, and stomachs of some of photography’s most important practitioners.Trade Review[The Photographer's Cookbook] raises all kinds of questions about consumption, desire, pleasure, and domesticity, and it whets the appetite for a very much larger work about food and photography… I’ve been left hungry for more. –LA Review of BooksThe Photographer’s Cookbook constructs its own vintage picture of the literal and visual tastes of the era, mixing with the contributors’ striking images recipes both esoteric and generic and utterly of their times. –Vogue.comBut should you keep this book on your coffee table or in your kitchen? Oro Editions To Reach the Source
Book SynopsisTo Reach the Source: The Stepwells of India is a photography book about a unique and magnificent architectural form that remains unknown to most people outside (and even within) India. More than just a shaft dug into the earth to fetch water, these are entire buildings that descend several stories below ground; they are spaces to be entered and occupied, serving functional, social, and ritual purposes. Often, they are as monumental and ornate as a church, and this is intentional. They are a source of water, a gathering space, and a temple all at once, but instead of rising into the sky, they descend below the surface. They create a spatial experience unlike any other, in which one is below ground but remains connected to the sun and sky. Today they lie largely abandoned and overlooked, in various states of preservation or, more often, disrepair. The photographs seek to recreate the striking ambiance that they elicit. The brief text that follows the images (interspersed with a few architectural drawings) provides a necessary minimum of context, ultimately to reinforce the primarily visual nature of the reader's experience, one in which the photographs have priority. The photographs seek to give readers some sense of the meditative process of descending into these beautiful structures, of going away from the surface on which we live, but not being cut off from it, instead directed towards the very source of life.

FUEL Publishing Ukrainian Modernism
Book SynopsisUkraine's overlooked modernist buildings are under threat from development, decommunization and war. Photographer Dmytro Soloviov has crossed Ukraine documenting them to form the most comprehensive publication available on the subject. What does Ukrainian Modernist architecture look like and why isn't it better-known in the west? Photographer and architectural tour guide Dmytro Soloviov is fighting to preserve the disappearing modernist heritage of his native Ukraine. These innovative buildings are an extraordinary blend of function, avant-garde aesthetics and ingenious design, but despite these qualities, they remain largely unrecognised. This is a result of several factors, including the stigma of belonging to the Soviet era, corruption, neglect, as well as the ongoing threat of destruction from both unscrupulous developers and war. From masterpieces such as the Kyiv Crematorium and Salut Hotel, to previously undocumented examples like the Uzhhorod Airport Terminal and the Novoarkhanhelsk Police Station, Soloviov has traversed Ukraine photographing the exteriors and interiors of these important buildings and their monumental art (mosaics, stained glass and sculptures). While the nation's attention is consumed by more existential matters, he has documented the unique identity of one of the least catalogued periods of Soviet architecture, his images forming a singular record of an unexpected and rapidly disappearing legacy. An introduction by renowned architecture critic Owen Hatherley, complete with historical images, cements these buildings in a cultural and political context. With over 120 examples across 240 pages, this publication is the most comprehensive available on the subject.

Book SynopsisA hopeful yet practical collection of essays exploring the many opportunities and benefits of rewilding and how to get involved today. Highly illustrated with nature photography tracing landscape change over thousands of years. Rewilding has become the key talking point in the modern conservation movement. But it's commonly misunderstood as a campaign to fill the forests with lynxes, wolves and bears, when in fact the ethos guiding the British rewilding movement is much more nuanced, and much broader in scope. It's also much more complicated, requiring an in-depth understanding of the complexity of regional ecosystems.Naturalist and photographer David Woodfall has spent years canvassing converts actually working in the countryside, meeting the people on the frontline of rewilding and collecting their stories. The result is a passionate chorus of voices from all facets of the movement. More than 50 contributors share stories of successful examples like the Knepp and Alladale estates, ofTrade ReviewPraise for Rewilding‘Very much worth reading’ George Monbiot ‘A series of interesting and reassuring essays about projects small and large which necessarily explains what this important conservation tool is really all about’ Chris Packham ‘If you are fascinated by nature and think you could do more to help, then this may well be the book for you, for you will surely find inspiration in its stories’ BBC Countryfile ‘Superb anthology of moving, informative, poignant and yes, at times, hard-hitting essays’ Scotland: The Big Picture Praise for David Woodfall‘Can a photograph truly be worth a thousand words? Inspired by the energy of the 1990s when a female-first ethos was actively shaping music, clothing and culture, Magee has fostered the same spirit of enthusiasm for a new generation of it-girls, championing a truly singular and radically instinctive take on femininity. In the brand?s early days, Magee enlisted the likes of Coco Gordon-Moore (Kim Gordon?s daughter) and Princess Nokia to star in campaigns while mentoring industry heavyweights like Paloma Elsesser, Lourdes Leon, Amandla Stenberg, and Beatrice Domond. The brand''s essence is reinforced by these dynamic, emotionally charged interactions with females across generations becoming more of an ecosystem than a brand. The MadeMe girl is radical because she rebels against the concept of who society says she should be, she is defiant because she is true?this feeling is always embodied through the garments she wears and the choices she makes. Communicating through ideas and interests across music, art, fashion, and culture, MadeMe has collaborated with the likes of Doc Martens, Nike, Fruits, Vans, Converse, and X-Girl, translating its youthful design language to like-minded audiences through energetic design codes. Arranged by pure feeling rather than in a traditional chronological order, this publication features an extensive range of voices and talents harnessed by the brand over the years including artwork by musician, Cody Critcheloe (SSION), artists, Ally Bo, Shana Sadeghi-Ray, Aneko, and photographer, Petra Collins.
