Book SynopsisDorothy Sing Zhang unveils a compelling portrayal of humanity's vulnerable state during sleep. The scene is set in the bedrooms of others. One is asked to be asleep, a squeeze cable release is placed under the pillow. The chance of one's unconscious body rolling over and triggering the camera results in an exposure. Like Someone Alive expands these boundaries by withdrawing the traditional relationships between the photographer, the object and the camera. About five years ago I was trying to realise a way where the approach towards the trigger would somehow be directly reflected in the image. How can the pressure craft the physicality upon the trigger that generates the exposure. I had this old exercise pull up bar. I would physically pull myself up while squeezing the cable release to make an image. A step further was to somehow dismiss the awareness of the approach, so sleep became the plot but photography is the story.

  • Down the Jade Mountain

APE (Art Paper Editions) Down the Jade Mountain

Book Synopsis'Down the Jade Mountain' is a concise exploration of identity crises across person, artist, family, country, and photography itself. Ivo Sekulovski, living in Italy and wrestling with belonging, embarks on a project in his hometown Ohrid, North Macedonia. The book reads like a series of visual riddles, every page bustling with hints and symbols; some universally readable, some deeply and irredeemably personal. In it, Ivo explores and dissects his family dynamics, the multitude of cultures that compose his native country, and his scattered sense of self while all the time playing with the ever conflicted relationship between photography, reality, and truth. With an unsettling ability to blur the lines between all these themes, we see family archival images intersecting with staged images of his parents and immaculate, eerie still life. The medium suits the storyimages hold mystery, blurring reality. Ivo's play with photography raises questions on time, truth, memory, and reality. (Chiara Bardelli Nonino)

Book SynopsisContributions by Elvia Wilk, Graham Harman and Adrian MackenzieIn 1959, the American engineer Paul Baran was charged by the RAND Corporation with the task of designing a telecommunications network resilient enough to survive a nuclear attack. A year later Baran published his proposed solution: a network of distributed nodes without a centralized core. He argued that a distributed network would be indestructible because the connections between its nodes were redundant; multiple connections safeguard a system from total destruction if individual nodes are damaged. A decade later, Baran's distributed relay node architecture formed the conceptual framework for the first system of inter-networked computers, which would become the basis for today's decentralized wireless internet. APE Palimpsest

    4 in stock

Book SynopsisPalimpsest explores the makeup of the conceptual and physical landscape of Western cultural knowledge and heritage: how does contemporaneity assert itself from the penumbra of history? The primary task of the book is not so much to explain the past as it is to consider historical development and its visual expressions. Using photography and text as its means of investigation, the publication emerges from the intersections of science and culture, natural and man-made, analogue and digital, visible and hidden. On its pages, history and the present converge through these seeming polarities and propose a persuasive argu-ment to refigure temporality. Palimpsest is an ongoing project that began in 2012 and like any living' archive, it keeps growing constantly. Approaching the book as a work-in-progress, Braquenier debunks the publication, and the idea of history itself, as something imprisoned in the past, as inactive and immobile. The work illustrates how material history is constantly being altered and added on. It questions the methods mankind uses to preserve historical records and knowledge overall.

Book SynopsisIn The Member of the Wedding, a 1946 novel by the American author Carson McCullers, the twelve-year-old protagonist Frankie Addams sighs: They were the two prettiest people I ever saw. Yet it was like I couldn't see all of them I wanted to see. My brains couldn't gather together quick enough and take it all in. And then they were gone. You see what I mean?' That Stief DeSmet understands' what Frankie means like no other, how could it be otherwise? What he invariably presents in his work, and again in Paradise, Prototypes & Other Deconstructions, is the fragmentary representation of something that is too agile and too fleeting in its totality far too agile and fleeting to be fully grasped. Paradoxically enough, that something' cannot be equated to what we often call the unreal' beauty of supremely attractive people, or to colourful skies filled with billowing clouds, or even with artistic masterpieces. Nor is it related, in a non-aesthetic sense, to the type of incident that is often characterised as too good to be true'. That something' is unambiguously real the absolute reality, namely, of an animal. More specifically: a creature that is wild and non-domesticated. In DeSmet's work, this reality appears to be inherently flawed, or rather, it is too fleeting and agile to be seen and experienced, since we are such imperfect, torn and flawed beings. Our brains don't work fast enough, that is true, and furthermore, a new moment dawns with every blink of the eye, each one of which is diametrically opposed to its predecessor. When reality chooses, above all else, to reveal itself in the form of an animal, it perpetually eludes us you see what I mean?' and to such an extent that it no longer seems to exist. It is this fact that Stief DeSmet seeks to impress upon us with his work. (extract from the text of Christophe Vekeman)In collaboration with Be-Part Waregem

Book SynopsisBy means of a dialogue between the text and the visual material from the videos, Steyn Bergs and Emma van der Put want to take a critical look at how images are mobilised, not only to illustrate certain visions of the future, but also how they contribute to the creation of such visionswhich are never neutral'in the present. On the basis of the videos made by Van der Put, this publication focuses on the specific working and politics of images in the Noordwijk and the Expo area in Brussels. Within these locations, developments that are currently taking place throughout Europe (from property speculation to migration flows) manifest themselves in a concrete and local manner. This book is released in context of the solo exhibition Mall of Europe by Emma van der Put at Mu. Zee, Ostend.

Book SynopsisAttached is a collection of texts that document a diverse range of artworks made by Jessie Bullivant (AU/FI) over the past decade. By replacing the default photographic documentation with written accounts, the artist raises questions about how immaterial artworks are preserved, accessed and ultimately remembered, allowing space for nuances often lost in photographic documentation. As an incomplete survey of the artist's work, the book blurs the boundaries between art and its documentation, between a conventional monograph and an experimental artist's book. It gives an exciting glimpse into a committed artistic practice tackling a variety of issues from representation, power and access to subtle social interactions. Book SynopsisA travelogue that interlaces portraiture and text to reveal both a magazine's journey and the author's own personal history. Dogimont uses some of his photos to help jog him into writing an essay along with musings that can be read in no particular order but when taken in together, form a story. Something along the lines of no longer belonging to nor ever really escaping the nature and climate we grew up in. Often, the passages relate directly to the pictures facing them and encounters with dogs, bears, trees, friends, fashion models and actors the likes of Adam Driver, Jeff Bridges, Lea Seydoux, Tilda Swinton and Isabelle Huppert are recounted in a concise, conversational style. At times though, the wandering prose and photos have little to do with one another. Not immediately at least. With a foreword by Norman Reedus.

Book SynopsisThe Balmuccia fault, situated in Italy, is a thin line of glass formed during an earthquake which occured millions years ago, several kilometers underground and eventually surfaced during the formation of the Alps. This bearly visible line is studied by Alexandre Schubnel and his team from the Geology Laboratory of Paris Ecole Normale Supérieure (France). This series of images completed in 2015 is the result of the photographer's collaboration with the scientists to produce a precise mapping of the fault, as well as proposing a personal, visual extension of the story. The Fault is the second chapter of a photographic trilogy on physical science, started in 2010 with astrophysics (A Black Matter, published in 2012 by Journal/F93). It will end in 2017 with a final chapter covering the field of glaciology.

Book SynopsisFabrica chronicles the French artist Sabrine Vitali's six months of immersion, experimentation and creation at the production facility of the Italian luxury hardware maker Renato Menegatti, as the fourth artist in residence to be selected by LVMH Métiers d'Art. Vitali immediately sensed that this industrial site was like a living organism, its metabolism fine-tuned to digest and transform metal. Her sculptural work during the residency took shape through a poetic displacement of the techniques and various materials in use at the factory, one that turns our usual understanding of metal on its head in order to draw out its organic nature, its suppleness, its depth, and its sensual side. Vitali's book is a journey deep within the landscape of her visual explorations over this period, bringing into dialogue views of the factory, workshop images, detail shots of her experiments, materials and machines, along with reproductions of the pieces she created.
