  • Prestel Street Art's Rising Stars: 24 Artists You Should

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisMaking their statements on the walls of the world's major cities, these emerging artists are also making their way to the forefront of an increasingly crowded genre. As street artists move from the fringe to the mainstream, it's hard to know who is a true talent and who's just a flash in the pan. Filled with stunning photography and portraits of each artist, this book identifies twenty rising stars whose imaginative and technically brilliant works are bringing them to the forefront of the genre. Each artist is profiled in multiple-page spreads that include background texts, portraits, and a sampling of their work. Included here are London-based artist Ben Slow, whose black ink and deeply expressive faces grace a number of buildings in the UK capital; Parisian artist Ardif, whose hybrid creatures merge machines with nature; Inti, who uses large, vividly colored murals to critique modern Chilean society; and American Vince Ballentine, whose technique combines elements of rap and hip hop. Whether rebelling against the establishment or bringing communities together; highlighting important issues or expressing a unique creative vision; these artists are living proof of street art's lasting influence, infinite adaptability, and remarkable diversity.

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisSince the introduction of photography by commercial studio photographers and the colonial state in Kenya, this global medium has been intensely debated and contested among Muslims on the cosmopolitan East African coast. This book does not only explore the making, circulation, and consumption of popular photographs, but also the other side, their rejection and obliteration, an essential aspect of a medium's history that should not be neglected. It deals with various "social spaces of refusal" in the local Muslim milieu and in that of "traditional" spirit mediums in which (gendered) visibility was (and is) contested in various and creative ways. It focuses on the "aesthetics of withdrawal": the various ways and techniques that process the photographic act as well as the photographic image to theatricalize the surface of the image in new ways by veiling, masking, and concealing. In a fragmented historical perspective, Heike Behrend seeks to complement, decenter, and counter the history of photography as it has been told by the West and to narrate another history beginning with preceding local media such as textiles and spirit possession.

Book SynopsisHow to account for the peculiar attraction of certain photos? How to deal with the specific use of images in particular contexts? Monika Schwärzler presents a variety of photographic case studies exploring visual phenomena from the point of view of media analysis as well as from sociological, aesthetic, and psychoanalytic perspectives. The topics range from a new reading of Thomas Struth's street photographs to CERN photos with their charged rhetoric, from the assault of photographic close-ups to speculations on an anonymous slide collection featuring a woman with an ever-present white handbag. The book is intended for an audience receptive to the analytical appeal of images, prepared to go beyond what can be taken at face value.

Book SynopsisHow is photography connected to global practices? This is a first edited collection to trace the relationship between history, photography and memory in a global perspective on three interrelated levels: firstly, in the artistic and cultural production of pictures, secondly, in the decoding of colonial and contemporary photography, and thirdly, in collecting photographs in picture archives dealing with colonial, anthropological and family photography. The contributions sketch the contested field of global photography and trace the manifold intertwinements between historical and contemporary photographs.

Book SynopsisHistorical photographs taken in Latin America have now become key sites for memory politics, ethnographic imagination, and the negotiation of identity. This volume opens up a set of questions relating to the contemporaneous agency of images as well as their current appropriation via new technologies. Case studies of pictures taken in Mexico, Colombia, Peru and Brazil analyze these processes by tracing how the images have been resignified over time and space. The contributions examine photographs that have been recently rediscovered by such diverse actors as European museums, human rights organizations, anthropologists, shamans, local historians, and communities of internet users.

Book SynopsisIn Digital Image Systems, Claus Gunti examines the antagonizing reactions to digital technologies in photography. While Thomas Ruff, Andreas Gursky and Jörg Sasse have gradually adopted digital imaging tools in the early 1990s, other photographers from the Düsseldorf School have remained faithful to film-based technologies. By evaluating the aesthetic and discursive preconditions of this situation and by extensively analyzing the digital work of these three photographers, this book shows that the digital turn in photography was anticipated by the conceptualization of images within systems, and thus offers new perspectives for understanding the "digital revolution".Table of ContentsIntroduction; Framing the Düsseldorf School; What is Digital Photography?; Reception of digital photography: post-photographic theories and the German documentary discourse; Archaeology of computing: photo-conceptualism, the Becher protocol and early computer art; Emergence of digital tools in Düsseldorf (19871998); Generalization of digital aesthetics in Düsseldorf (19992015); Conclusion; Index.

Book SynopsisThese essays confirm the continued relevance of 'north' as a site of cultural practice and artistic endeavour. If northern regions are tangible realities, the place of varied topography, light, climate, and biogeography, the location of distinct peoples and culture, typically they have been depicted through the traditions of northern landscape representation and the cultural narratives of an era. These discussions - focusing on Scotland, Northern England, Northern Europe, Siberia, the Arctic and Nordic lands - by photographic practitioners as well as theorists, explore and question this tradition, considering landscape as experience, reinterpreting notions of wilderness, emptiness and the sublime.

Book SynopsisHysteria, a mysterious disease known since antiquity, is said to have ceased to exist. Challenging this commonly held view, this is the first cross-disciplinary study to examine the current functional neuroimaging research into hysteria and compare it to the 19th-century image-based research into the same disorder. Paula Muhr's central argument is that, both in the 19th-century and current neurobiological research on hysteria, images have enabled researchers to generate new medical insights. Through detailed case studies, Muhr traces how different images, from photography to functional brain scans, have reshaped the historically situated medical understanding of this disorder that defies the mind-body dualism.

DOM Publishers The Nuclear Dream: The Hidden World of Atomic

    7 in stock

Book SynopsisSince 2011, the German government has been implementing a policy phasing out nuclear power. Over a period of seven years, Bernhard Ludewig photographed the country’s atomic landscape and history, keeping a visual record of the buildings and the work performed in them. The images, collected here, create a unique panorama of usually inaccessible spaces. On show are the plants’ operations – processes including the opening of the reactor and the loading of Castor containers for transport – and interiors, such as control rooms and cooling towers. The book follows the journey of uranium from enrichment through reprocessing to final storage, and shows research spanning from Otto Hahn’s discovery of fission to thorium and breeder reactor prototypes. In total 55 sites are represented, and images of research reactors, training facilities, and Chernobyl’s sarcophagus provide a further look behind closed door. The Nuclear Dream offers an insight into a disappearing world whose rooms and technology often appear sacred. It is a fitting tribute to an era of boundless energy – one whose blue glow captured a generation and proclaimed the start of a new era.

About Books GmbH Flies on Milk, Green Eggs & Ham

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisTo coincide with the exhibition in Gemeente Museum Den Haag, a comprehensive publication in English exploring Morgan Betz's entire body of work. The title of the book is taken from one of Betz's favourite books as a child, Green Eggs & Ham by Dr. Seuss. Flies on Milk refers to a line from a poem by French Medieval poet Francois Villon. But just like the visual motifs Betz uses, the origin is no longer of any consequence in this choice and combination. Using a mix of Pop Art and comics Morgan Betz (*1974, Amsterdam) creates his own unique visual idiom in which art history in the form of High Art' colludes with Low Art' comics and advertising images. Betz is a daydreamer who draws and paints what he sees. But he does not regard everything he encounters as a potential painting. The decision to turn it into art is the culmination of a long process of deliberation, searching and looking at images with potential, and images he simply finds interesting. As he does this, he visualises memories, associations and feelings. And so fences, windows and doors become gateways to the imagination.

The architect and photographer Rolf Reiner Maria Borchard, who is professor of design principles at the Muthesius-Hochschule in Kiel, has chosen seven of the most beautiful gardens and photographed them during several trips, always in spring, in other words at a time when the garden architecture has not yet been overwhelmed by the vegetation, and so can make the best possible impact in the image. His trained eye for the way architecture is embedded in the landscape means that he has found striking and convincing images, steeped in the harmony of the gardens.

Edition Axel Menges Ruins: Reflections about Violence Chaos and

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisText in English & German. Chaos and anarchy represent the opposite pole to an ordered life. Nothing works any more, everything is devastated, everything is falling apart. City walls, buildings that once afforded protection, have fallen victim to the excesses of armed conflict. Infernal threats, ambushes, fiery rain and other catastrophes were described even in the Bible. Pillaging and plunder were part of everyday life in the Middle Ages. Cruel deeds familiar from the Bible, or those described by other people or experienced personally, inspired painters in the transitional period from the Middle Ages to the Renaissance, and were picked out as a central theme in their pictures. In the 18th century it became fashionable to build artificial ruins in parks and landscape gardens. Ruins became an image of human inadequacy in the attempt to come to terms with nature. 18th century landscape painters used ruin motifs in order to suggest the mysterious magic of pain, the sadness of beauty, to viewers. In the first half of the last century the world had to endure two wars that costs millions of people their lives and reduced many cities to rubble. Countless ruins remained. Few of them have survived. Overgrown with grass, ivy and Virginia creeper they now tower up out of the landscape like many others from various epochs bearing witness to those who see them of the vanity of human endeavour, of transience, of death; filling them with horror, but at the same time exuding a feeling of gloom and sadness, of melancholy. In this book, the author delivers a detailed assessment of ruins as a phenomenon in architecture, landscape design, fine art, film and the media. The result is an extraordinarily intense contribution to the theme of transience.Table of ContentsHans Dieter Schaal is a trained architect living in Attenweiler near Ulm and in Berlin. He works not only in his original profession, but also as a garden architect, as an exhibition and stage designer and as a writer. His exhibition designs and stage sets are among the best of their kind in our days.

    10 in stock

Book SynopsisSince the Age of Enlightenment our understanding of nature in the Western world has undergone a profound transformation, and no other medium captures this quite like the English landscape garden. In Vesuv, Venus, Saskia Groneberg takes a closer look at one of Europe's most significant garden monuments, Wörlitzer Park. She embarks on a photographic journey in search of the age-old dream of a paradise on Earth, the harmonious coexistence of humankind and nature. In fine gradations of gray, she plays with the contradictory yet dreamlike spaces of this art(ificial) nature, oscillating between utopia and reality. On this journey through the park, space and time grow indistinguishable. Winter follows spring, detail follows sequence, dream leads to deconstruction. A replica of Mount Vesuvius fashioned from enormous blocks of stone and the sculpture of a Venus de Medici simultaneously symbolize and deconstruct the antipodes of masculine and feminine, earthly and divine, darkness and light. Mythical motifs such as the swan and the fig leaf brush up against mundane tourists. The latter sit in gondolas on the lake, hurry towards historical architectures fold-out maps and walking sticks in hand or follow winding paths from viewpoint to viewpoint. Along the way, the plants, buildings, canals, even the wildlife reveal themselves to be part of a dreamlike scenery in which the visitors move about like figures in a tableau vivant. They are observers and at the same time protagonists of a never-ending play.

Of course, his photographs differ from the great number of subjective photographs and photographs of images that appeal to the heart of the photographer. Tatsuki tentatively abandons the sort of photograph that is not affected by the elastic force of literature and pictures, in other words the fascination of intuitive feeling (meaning) and composition that tends to fall easily into symbolism.
