  • Marylands Vanishing Lives Maryland Paperback

Johns Hopkins University Press Marylands Vanishing Lives Maryland Paperback

Book SynopsisIn this collection of sixty-six short profiles, illustrated with memorable photographs by Edwin Remsberg, Sherwood preserves for posterity the lives of Marylanders who hang on to values and skills that are quickly disappearing.Trade ReviewWistful, beautiful, elegiac... A handsome collection of essays and photographs that celebrates the lives of pigeon racers and elevator operators, oyster packers and barrel makers, sailmakers and boat builders, fishermen and blacksmiths. A kind of 'let us praise famous men' (and women), it celebrates blue collars and skinned knuckles, the stubbornness and pride that led some to continue with trades they learned long ago, not caring that the world has long since passed them by. -- David Nicholson Washington Post An elegant, understated volume... A combination Baedeker and time capsule, a guide to the Maryland, and the America, that is fast disappearing, the victims of the highway, the chain store, the franchise restaurant, the blur of windows, DOS, and disks. -- David Shribman Wall Street Journal Sherwood's prose is that of a master craftsman in his field-clear and plain, admirably brief yet touched with insight. Remsberg's photographs are straightforward, black-and-white, and blessedly free of artsy effects. Their book is a fine gift for this area, more than just a nice coffee-table decoration. Book SynopsisIt will be of interest to scholars and students of classical antiquity and the Middle Ages, as well as to professional and amateur numismatists.Trade ReviewThis thought-provoking work... should be important reading for scholars in a variety of disciplines. It challenges, for example, the long-held belief that a large-scale drain of Roman specie went to India and the East in the early centuries of the Roman Empire and the concept that the western provinces of the Roman Empire were never completely monetized. These reinterpretations and others, presented forcefully with careful documentation, should arouse the attention of anyone interested in ancient or medieval history, economics, or numismatics. Book SynopsisOffers a visual and textual narrative of Alabama’s photographic history from 1839 to 1941. It describes the phenomenon of photography as practiced in Alabama as a major cultural force, paying close attention to the particular contexts from which each image emerges and the fragments of microhistory that each image documents.Trade Review“Shot in Alabama is an extraordinary, first-rate overview of photography in this state, from the introduction of daguerreotypes in 1839 to the beginning of US involvement in World War II, which Robb explains was itself a watershed in Alabama photography.” —Martin T. Olliff, editor of The Great War in the Heart of Dixie: Alabama during World War I|“Frances Robb has always had a meticulous and discerning eye when it comes to looking at photographs. We photographers value this eye in helping us understand the patterns and nuances of our images. Now everyone can have access to Robb’s marvelous eye within the pages of Shot in Alabama, a first-ever compilation of the evolving, hundred-year span of photography in Alabama. These vernacular images have subtle power equal to that of many of the better-known iconic images of Alabama. This is a stunning collection of images that show how the people of Alabama lived and evolved during their formation as a state and into the early years of World War II. It is beautiful and haunting and at the same time gives new life to a time now past.” —Chip Cooper, author and photographer of Old Havana: Spirit of the Living City and Campesinos: Inside the Soul of Cuba

Book SynopsisTrade ReviewIn difficult times, sources of inspiration are treasured. Tim Palmer’s enchanting photographs and engaging story-telling remind me, viscerally, why saving free-flowing rivers from harm is essential, not only for the world’s biology, but for its’ soul. This 50th anniversary celebration of the National Wild and Scenic Rivers Act immerses readers in the timelessness of America’s most cherished rivers and instills gratitude for the dedicated leaders who created this unique System of protected rivers. Read Tim's book and be inspired!"" - Rebecca Wodder, Former President and CEO, American Rivers""Palmer has composed a tribute to the enduring vitality of rivers: the absolute importance of safeguarding them through the exercise of good sense and sound stewardship; the rewards that rivers invariably return to all who invest in their defense; and perhaps most important of all, the rapture that the wild water can instill in each of us when we open our hearts to its ever-surging flood tide of beauty."" - Kevin Fedarko, author of The Emerald Mile""With his book about our Wild and Scenic Rivers, Tim Palmer has made a great contribution to America. Having been directly involved in this program, I'm grateful that the legacy of all who have worked to protect these rivers will be known and appreciated."" - President Jimmy Carter""There is magic in rivers and in the camera and pen of Tim Palmer. American environmental history is highlighted by legislation such as the National Parks Act (1916), the Wilderness Act (1964) an the National Wild and Scenic Rivers Act (1968), which Tim describes here in illuminating detail. Read this book to understand how and why moving water has become a key component of our environmental ethic."" - Dr. Roderick Frazier Nash, Professor Emeritus, University of California Santa Barbara and author of Wilderness and the American Mind""Tim Palmer has created a glorious book of photos, but Wild and Scenic Rivers is far more than that. Read it from cover to cover! All of us who shoulder responsibility for administering our wild and scenic rivers will find this narrative not just useful and entertaining, but also essential to what we do, and all should take to heart this vivid history of how we got where we are in the ever-unfolding enterprise of preserving America’s great rivers."" - Chris Brown, Director (retired), Wilderness and Wild and Scenic Rivers, U.S Forest Service

Book SynopsisIn this book, award-winning photographer Miguel Gandert records the sacred rituals and dances of the mestizo peoples of the upper Río Grande in 130 exquisite black-and-white photographs. Included are images of the two great Indo-Hispano regional traditions, the Matachines conquest dance drama, complete with monsters and bull, and the multifaceted Comanches celebration, with its equestrian victory play and boisterous dances. The image and story of Our Lady of Guadalupe are in evidence everywhere in a sacred landscape criss-crossed with procession and pilgrimage. Book SynopsisIn 1927, the year that Charles A Lindbergh crossed the Atlantic Ocean, another revolution was happening on the ground. A group of young archaeologists was forging an area of study centered on the ancient Southwest. Aviation and archaeology merged when Alfred V. Kidder, of the Carnegie Institution, hired Lindbergh to photograph the sites from an airplane. Lindbergh''s aerial survey of the Four Corners and Upper Rio Grande, made with Anne Morrow Lindbergh at the controls and, possibly, photographing some of the sites, were the first low-angle views of the vast, interconnected ancient landscape. The Lindbergh documentation of the sites remains a valuable historic record of the northern Southwest plateau. Ninety years later, noted aerial photographer Adriel Heisey has been commissioned by Archaeology Southwest, an organization dedicated to preservation archaeology, to re-photograph the ancient sites exactly as Lindbergh did. The juxtaposition of thirty black-and-white remastered Lindbergh
