Book SynopsisLatest production of Cuban artist, Adrián Fernández, concerned with the impact of material culture, history and memory on contemporary man. Interested in the symbols that represent ideologies and that construct collective identities, he searches in his photography for the memory of the historical past and its impact on his cultural present. His work is organised in series that sometimes interconnect and complement each other. Each new series is a consequence of the previous one, with similar concerns and interests, from black and white photography with a documentary perspective, to studio photography, to the use of digital media and colour photography. His sculptural work is developed in installations, in which he uses assemblage and welding of metal and carbon steel. Damiani Shoebox Studio

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisSHOEBOX These aspiring models have flown in from all over the world to Paris, the ogre city, where the quest for beauty feeds on new faces. Soon, these uprooted girls will be transformed into sophisticated creatures of universal glamour. Stephane Coutelle, the renowned beauty photographer, will be one of the architects of this transformation. But by receiving them in the Shoebox Studio during the first days of their Parisian stay for a brief session, unencumbered by any strict production objectives, Coutelle pays tribute to their identity and their peculiarity, both perhaps even more short-lived than their youth. This first meeting aims to capture a psychology, a past, before professional reflexes can take hold, before any complicity is established. The artist acts here without pre-conceived ideas, open to everything. The situation is not the conventional one of the artist and his model. The girls' looks carry questioning, expectations, but determination as well. They know their fate will unwind behind the closed doors of shooting sessions, and that there will be little time to learn the rules of the game ...Coutelle's portraits sometimes trouble us. We could attribute this disconcertment to a kind of harshness or voyeurism on behalf of the photographer. But in reality, these images express a certain solidarity; it is not Coutelle himself who is unrelenting, but the world in which both the artist and his model evolve. Shoebox is a major project because the portraits lead us from a private, individual psychology to the contemporary human condition in which the need to be seen and recognized has become a global quest, a social phenomenon.

  • Brooklyn Buzz

    Damiani Brooklyn Buzz

Book SynopsisThe Brooklyn Buzz series presents an extended visual exploration of Brooklyn and its inhabitants viewed from a bus window frame. The project was conceived as a symbolic photographic portrait of America in this specific time of history, a time of transition and constant transformation deeply affected by the global economic crisis and its consequences on society, politics and culture. Brooklyn Buzz is an original and intimate portrait that aims to capture the soul and powerful energy of Brooklyn. Riding local buses with the intention of capturing the essence of "the real thing" was a very rewarding although tough experience: local buses are crowded with children and elders, with a humanity rarely to be seen on the Manhattan centric subway trains.

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisFrom the watery and lush farmlands of the Mekong to the lush green rice paddies of the Red River region; from the crystal clear waters and sandy beaches of the coastline to the tropical mountains of the north; from the historic corridors of Hanoi to the bustling business, fashion and media center of Ho Chi Minh City, Dodge provides a captivating cross section of a country that has shaken off its violent past and now appears to be in constant motion. To be sure, Dodge's exploration reveals a country at a crossroads with serious economic and political challenges. But whatever Vietnam ultimately does to fix its economy or confront human rights issues, Dodge has provided viewers with a new and insightful perspective on a country that is once again connected to the United States and the West economically, politically and militarily.

Book SynopsisIn 1978 as the school year drew to a close two of my high school students who had tickets to a Rolling Stones Concert approached me and asked if I would like to go with them to the concert. After discussing it with my wife Nancy, who thought it was a good idea and promising photo opportunity, I was enthusiastic to go for the experience. My students were delighted that I'd be joining them. Besides they needed me to drive us to Philadelphia from Long Island, New York. So off we went for whatever adventure might lay ahead. And I carefully packed my three 35mm cameras and plenty of b&w film to record the event. Recently, I was inspired to revisit the contact sheets from that one day and choose images that still spoke to me after so many years. Here are some of those photographs I took on June 17th at JFK Stadium surrounded by 90,000 Rolling Stones fans who were so open to my camera. One footnote...Bill and Chris, my two students, are still in touch and we are good friends to this day. I am forever grateful to them for our trip to that Rolling Stones Concert.

Book SynopsisThis book edited by Jerome Sans draws a Lipstick panorama within the world of contemporary art photography. Fully illustrated it is conceived as a magazine or a rhapsody without any beginning or end. Throughout the pages unfurls a new history of the relationship with Lipstick. A story that shows how this feminine symbol with particular flavor has pervaded our culture and its imagery. The book brings together more than 40 international artists and their work from Andy Warhol's self-portrait to intimate pictures of Araki and Nan Goldin, collapsed compositions of Maurizio Cattelan and Pier Paolo Ferrari. Sublimed, made-up, eroticized, parodied...these traces of contemporary cult accoutrement has become an iconic element of contemporary values. A sexy book to be kissed.

  • Diverse Beauty

    Damiani Diverse Beauty

    5 in stock

Book SynopsisFashion photographer Alexi Lubomirski was inspired to create this book, which represents diverse beauty without boundaries, after photographing the actress Lupita Nyong'o. Lubomirski was so impressed by Nyong'o's natural beauty that he felt she didn't need studio lighting because she radiated light from within. After shooting her, it struck him that he rarely had the chance to photograph beautiful women with a range of different "looks" for professional assignments. Often when he submitted a list of models he was interested in shooting, responses would be along the lines of "We love her, but ...", "Her hair is a problem ...", "She is too dark." In response, Lubomirski conceived Diverse Beauty, which celebrates many different types of female beauty through sophisticated and lively fashion photographs. Diverse Beauty embraces all beauty and aims to put every type of beauty on a pedestal, so that everyone who looks at it, no matter her race, size, colour, or sexual orientation, can identify and see herself as beautiful.

  • Hello Stranger

    Damiani Hello Stranger

Book SynopsisHello Stranger is the new book by the theater group Motus, whose hybrid work has unleashed dramaturgy and artistic languages as well as produced new scenic forms since its founding in the early 1990s. Hello Stranger is an “atlas of images” and textual fragments focused on eight thematic chapters. These topoi have been transformed throughout the years, through the evolution of time and the bodies that have inhabited Motus’s stage. Built around the photographic images of the almost 100 shows that Motus has created, the words are a “choral” accompaniment, almost a polyphonic soundtrack, featuring the short contributions of company members, their fellow artists, and critics.

  • Caleb Cain Marcus: A Brief Movement After Death

Damiani Caleb Cain Marcus: A Brief Movement After Death

    5 in stock

Book SynopsisA brief movement after death by Caleb Cain Marcus explores the release of energy from the body into the universe when we die. The images were taken along the coasts of New York and California and contain sky and ocean—immense bodies of space that we can lose ourselves in; becoming part of their vastness. The inspiration for the book came to the photographer from a personal experience. With the birth of his daughter, his death suddenly felt very near. His childhood questions about what happens when we die resurfaced and Marcus began to think about how to visually represent what occurs after death. The work represents the starting point of his new practice that juxtaposes digital and hand-applied mediums to create a hybrid surface, color and edge that challenges the medium of a photograph and the way in which it is seen, understood and felt. With the motion of a pendulum the grease pencil is swung by a string to make tightly grouped marks that reference the finite quantity of time in a lifespan and that move across the paper as if in a formation of light leaving the earth.

  • Florence Montmare: America Series

    Damiani Florence Montmare: America Series

Book SynopsisAt the tail end of a pandemic and economic recession, artist and photographer Florence Montmare embarked on a photographic journey, through the U.S., to explore the traces of the climate and health crisis. 'Florence Montmare is not only a female photographer but an immigrant who was born in Vienna, raised in Stockholm, and now lives in New York. She saw America through her own outsider’s lens, envisioning a very different and very modern kind of road movie.' - i-D The first monograph by Swedish-Greek-American photographer and artist Florence Montmare showcases images made in 2021–22 while traveling across the United States from east to west (and back). Using an electric vehicle as a mobile studio, her 7000-mile roundtrip odyssey took her through nearly 30 states, on iconic roads such as Route 66 through the Midwest and I-10 across Texas and the South. Montmare encountered individuals from all walks of life, often at her frequent charging stops, and took the opportunity to ask people about their relationship to nature, and hopes and dreams for the future. As a woman and immigrant, Montmare focused on female, minority, Native American and LGBTQ perspectives and voices. The result is an unflinching, deeply personal yet universal portrayal of a transforming nation as the climate crisis alters the landscape.
