Book SynopsisA rigorous new thinking of the photograph in its relation to science, philosophy, and art, so as to discover an essence of photography that precedes its historical, technological, and aesthetic conditions. If philosophy has always understood its relation to the world according to the model of the instantaneous flash of a photographic shot, how can there be a “philosophy of photography” that is not viciously self-reflexive?Challenging the assumptions made by any theory of photography that leaves its own “onto-photo-logical” conditions uninterrogated, Laruelle thinks the photograph non-philosophically, so as to discover an essence of photography that precedes its historical, technological and aesthetic conditions. The Concept of Non-Photography develops a rigorous new thinking of the photograph in its relation to science, philosophy, and art, and introduces the reader to all of the key concepts of Laruelle's “non-philosophy.”

Book Synopsis2020 was a period of groundbreaking social and political upheaval, in combination with a colossal epidemiological crisisand it urgently redefined the working conditions of photojournalists. The historic 2020 Black Lives Matter protests and the devastating Covid-19 pandemic presented unique challenges for photojournalism, forcing photographers into a terrain defined by new ethical, technological, and safety (emotional and physical) concerns, as well as innovative attacks on press freedom. Through a series of interviewswith top photographers who covered 2020's biggest crises, as well as key photo editors who grappled with these unprecedented obstacles inside the newsroomThrough the Lens: The Pandemic and Black Lives Matter unpacks the industry's most critical debates as it sheds light on the experiences and thought processes of the visual journalists themselves. Importantly, this book encourages readers to consider the efforts behind the camera lens: the challenges and rTrade ReviewThis powerful book focuses on the crises of 2020—but its implications go well beyond that one year. Through the Lens asks us to rethink the ways we view the world through images and to understand that unconscious sociopolitical patterns can be influenced by visuals. This important book is essential reading for anyone interested in how history and culture are shaped by the camera. SHEILA PREE BRIGHT, award-winning photog-rapher and author of #1960Now: Photographs of Civil Rights Activists and Black Lives Matter Protests Through the Lens is a nuanced and sophisticated exploration of the role of photography in the Covid-19 pandemic and Black Lives Matter, two historic moments that have raised fundamental questions about photojournalism ethics, identity, and the impact of technological shifts on the field and norms of visual documentation. Dr. Walsh weaves compelling interviews with erudite analysis to contextualize the powerful photos that tell the stories of these transformational events. DR. COURTNEY RADSCH, former Advocacy Director with the Committee to Protect Journalists Through the Lens provides a rare look into the world of photojournalism, giving extraordinary insight into the experiences of those who photographed 2020’s major upheavals. It also forces us to think about the social, political, and historical dynamics of our time and the vital role that photos can play in contemporary conversations. Put simply, it is a masterful overview of the role of photography today. BARBARA DAVIDSON, Pulitzer Prize-winning photographer "There have been profound critics and philosophers about photography in the past, and recently the voice I find most interesting is that of Lauren Walsh… Walsh has a particular talent of bringing voices of photographers together in conversation, to help us understand not aperture or the rule of thirds, but significantly more important things like dignity and context and purpose. Her new book, Through The Lens: The Pandemic and Black Lives Matter, is a book of morals and beliefs and values that form the core of who we are, our work and why we do it." –Frames Magazine"We may be living in an image-saturated world, but the practice of photojournalism including the decisions that photo editors make and the experiences of photographers in the field rarely receive attention. Lauren Walsh’s new book, Through the Lens: The Pandemic and Black Lives Matter, aims to change that, delivering unique insights into the personal and professional challenges photojournalists faced in covering these two seismic global events." –Head On Interactional Magazine "[W]hat happens when the stories being covered force photojournalists into new areas with new ethical and physical safety concerns combined with outright attacks on the press themselves? Dr. Lauren Walsh… looks at both the ethical and safety minded challenges that photojournalists have faced covering both the Covid-19 pandemic and the Black Lives Matter Movement in her new book Through the Lens: The Pandemic and Black Lives Matter." – Blind Magazine"Richly illustrated with evocative photos, this book reminds us that photojournalism doesn’t simply mirror the world; it has the power to change it." -- YAHOO NEWS"For a field still dominated by white men, 'Through the Lens' brings a refreshing diversity of voices to a set of questions around privacy and consent, the role of captions, graphic imagery and censorship."Colin Dickey, LOS ANGELES TIMES"Visual journalism holds the power to attest, to interrogate, to educate. In the current conflicts around the world, journalists and photographers relay stories to their audiences, yet few may stop to consider how these images and news features are created and what roles they can play in future. In her new book THROUGH THE LENS: THE PANDEMIC AND BLACK LIVES MATTER, Lauren Walsh conducts interviews with leading photographers and photo editors in visual journalism during 2020’s biggest crises, and discussed the challenges they faced in this time, as well as how photojournalism continues to evolve in the present." -- Photomonitor"In her excellent new book, Through the Lens: The Pandemic and Black Lives Matter, NYU professor Lauren Walsh attempts to understand the historic year through the vantage point of the photojournalists that were on the frontlines capturing a multitude of unprecedented events. Walsh records the emotional toll that came with "covering death, destruction, and endemic racism." --VICE WORLD NEWSTable of Contents1. He reveals natural and artificial lighting techniques, as well as tricks of the trade, learned over years and years of dedicated fieldcraft. Book SynopsisRoyal women wield a unique, quiet kind of power. They use their clothing choices and their styling preferences to create a visual brand that is at once aspirational and accessible, and to project a sartorial statement that encompasses their values, priorities, and beliefs. For Britain's modern monarchy, fashion is often their most powerful and prominent political statement. And for this reason, it is ripe for dissection--from the tip of the fascinator to the toe of the pump. Filled with hundreds of 4-color photos and presented in a luxurious, coffee table-ready package, HRH will be split into four sections, each covering one of the four royals. The book will build off of Elizabeth's Instagram series, So Many Thoughts (SMT), by expanding her signature royal commentary to include deep-dive essays on both the royal women she studies and broader topics such as the cultural history of the hat and the role of social media in royal commentary. Book SynopsisThe childlike character of ideal femininity has long been critiqued by feminists, from Mary Wollstonecraft to Simone de Beauvoir. Yet, women continue to be represented as childlike in the western fashion media, despite the historical connotations of inferiority. This book questions why such images still hold appeal to contemporary women, after three, or even four, waves of feminism.Focusing on the period of 19902015, Picturing the Woman-Child traces the evolution of childlike femininity in British fashion magazines, including Vogue, i-D and Lula, Girl of my Dreams. These images draw upon a network of references, from Kinderwhore and Lolita to Alice in Wonderland and the femme-enfant of Surrealism.Alongside analysis of fashion photography, the book presents the findings of original research into audience reception. Inviting contemporary women to comment on images of the woman-child' provides an insight into the meaning of this figure as well as an evalTrade ReviewThis fascinating book centres on a paradox in visual culture: why do contemporary messages of female empowerment sit alongside a proliferation of images of childlike femininities? Examining magazine fashion spreads over 25 years, Picturing the Woman-Child offers a compelling analysis of four figures and the ways they are understood. * Rosalind Gill, City, University of London, UK *Morna Laing’s nuanced and layered analysis of childlike femininities in fashion imagery is eye-opening. She weaves together a compelling theoretical, historical, and visual analysis, offering the reader a new perspective on and a deeper understanding of these pervasive cultural depictions of women. * Jennifer Farley Gordon, independent researcher, writer and curator, USA *Morna Laing's Picturing the Woman-Child is essential reading for anyone seeking insight into fashion photography and the politics of the gaze. * Valerie Steele, Director of The Museum at FIT, New York, USA *Picturing the Woman-Child is an elegantly textured study of the complex history of childlike femininities, sharply observing how the concept has been centralized in contemporary European fashion media. Morna Laing offers us scholarly exploration at its finest, an analysis at once beautiful, poetic and sophisticated. This is a much-anticipated study that demystifies the cultural imagery of childlike femininities and deconstructs their allures that have long attracted artists, fashion practitioners, men, and, perhaps surprisingly, women themselves. Book SynopsisIn 1945, French political prisoners returning from the concentration camps of Germany coined the phrase ''the concentrationary universe'' to describe the camps as a terrible political experiment in the destruction of the human. This book shows how the unacknowledged legacy of a totalitarian mentality has seeped into the deepest recesses of everyday popular culture. It asks if the concentrationary now infests our cultural imaginary, normalizing what was once considered horrific and exceptional by transforming into entertainment violations of human life. Drawing on the political philosophy of Hannah Arendt and the analyses of violence by Agamben, Virilio, Lacoue-Labarthe and Nancy, it also offers close readings of films by Cavani and Haneke that identify and critically expose such an imaginary and, hence, contest its lingering force.Table of ContentsList of Illustrations Acknowledgements Series Preface: Concentrationary Memories: The Politics of Representation, Griselda Pollock and Max Silverman Introduction A Concentrationary Imaginary?, Griselda Pollock Part I. Her reviews and articles about photography and exhibitions have also appeared in numerous prestigious journals.Trade ReviewVanessa Rocco’s Photofascism is an outstanding achievement: a theoretically sophisticated and analytically compelling exposé of the way that the Italian and German dictatorships exploited exhibition culture in order to secure mass loyalty. Today, moreover, in light of fascism’s return, Rocco’s insights have assumed an uncanny contemporary relevance. * Richard Wolin, Distinguished Professor of History and Comparative Literature, The Graduate Center, The City University of New York, USA *Photofascism provides a fascinating, timely, and theoretically rich analysis of the photographic exhibition as a potent piece of the twentieth-century fascist propaganda machine. Rocco has written a historically and geographically grounded study with compelling implications for contemporary society. * Dolores Flamiano, Professor, James Madison University School of Media Arts & Design, USA *Rocco’s study represents a timely addition to the consolidated literature on photography as a means of seductive political persuasion and the monumental staging of power in interwar Europe. * Maria Antonella Pelizzari, Professor of Art History, Hunter College and The Graduate Center, The City University of New York, USA *Rocco delineates a history of the fascist exhibition spaces of spectacle in the 1930s and emphasizes just how much the mediums of photography and film have been engaged to enhance false narratives. Photography plays a central role in his work and gives rise to a highly peculiar world of imagination. The photographs allow us to take a look at the world in around 1900 with all its oddities. For Conan Doyle?s contemporaries, Sherlock Holmes was a real figure. To Conan Doyle, photographs of elves, the dead and ghosts testified to their existence. This book collects these images, along with the imaginarium that surrounds them.

Book SynopsisNineteenth-century photography is usually thought of in terms of black and white' images, but intense experimentation with generating and fixing colors pre-dated the public announcement of the daguerreotype in 1839. Introducing readers to the long, frequently overlooked story of the relationship of color to photography, this short anthology of primary sources includes: accounts of the scientific search for color by Elizabeth Fulhame and Sir John Herschel;photographers'' views on color; extracts from the photographic press and from manuals on handcoloring; and accounts by critics such as John Ruskin. The volume provides a fresh perspective on the culture, history and theory of early photography, demonstrating why scientists, philosophers, photographers, literary writers and artists were so fascinated by the potential for polychrome in photographs. With an introductory essay arguing that from the earliest days of photography the prospect of color loomed large in the imagination of its crTrade Review"A fascinating insight into the ways in which early practitioners of photography and art historians and philosophers more generally thought about the importance of color in the 19th century. - Caroline Blinder, Goldsmiths University, UK An extremely useful book for students – both undergraduate and graduate students taking History of Photography courses, and those taking broader based courses (especially as a graduate level) on Victorian Visual Culture - Kate Flint, University of Southern California, USA"Table of ContentsList of figures Introduction A Note on the Texts Texts Section 1: ‘In traces represented by tints’: Monochrome/polychrome. 1. Book SynopsisThe Making of Visual News sets out to show how photography has changed the way we read, report and sell the news. It investigates how photographs first became news images at the end of the nineteenth century and how magazines in the USA, the UK, France and Germany have put them to use ever since. Drawing on a wide selection of images, author Thierry Gervais (in collaboration with Gaëlle Morel) analyses news photographs in the context of their original presentation in print. Highly illustrated, the book contains 85 full colour magazine layouts and spreads, offering the reader a view of how photographs were and are used in print publications, including Life, Picture Post, the Berliner Illustrirte Zeitung and VU. It examines how photographs were employed to attract new readers throughout the twentieth century, arguing that photography was the main tool by which news editors sought to communicate the news and attract a broader readership. Looking beyond the roles of photographer and journaTrade ReviewRichly illustrated and clearly written, this book firmly and definitively anchors such well-known mid-century photo weekly magazines as LIFE in a much longer history. Book SynopsisThis pragmatic text helps students master the craft of copy editing--including both the editing skills and the people skills essential to professional success. Experienced newspaper copy editor and professor John Russial covers the fundamentals and more: how to edit for grammar, punctuation, usage, and style; attend to broader issues of fairness and focus; develop strong headlines and other display elements; and work collaboratively with reporters, other editors, and designers. Special attention is given to the copy editor's role as critical thinker and coach as well as resident wordsmith. Throughout, proven editing strategies are explained and numerous concrete examples and practical tips offered. Trade ReviewStrategic Copy Editing offers a bridge between the world of stylebooks and reporting texts and the wider, unscripted world of professional copy editing. The emphasis on decision making, coaching, and critical thinking is particularly valuable to editors-in-training moving from classroom exercises to real stories written on real deadlines by real colleagues. Discussions of headlines and story form show a solid, nuanced awareness of how the rules got there, when and why they might need to be refined or reshaped, and how editors can do so in a day-to-day, practical context.--Fred Vultee, University of Missouri School of JournalismRussial has poured his impressive professional background into a richly comprehensive guide to editing. Beginning editing students will come away with a full understanding of what it means to be a copy editor. Advanced students will discover not only familiar topics mined with greater depth, but also topics seldom covered in typical textbooks; for example, how to work with the reporter as well as the story. The tips and strategies given at the end of most chapters offer advice that even professional copy editors would find useful. Strategic Copy Editing should be on the desk of anyone interested in the transformation of words and art into a coherent and compelling message.--Deborah Gump, Knight Ohio Program for Editing and Editing Education, E.W. Scripps School of Journalism, Ohio UniversityJohn Russial's strategic approach to copy editing is what sets this book apart from others in the field. He looks at editing from the inside out, and from the outside in, and how the ‘people factor' affects it all. The book is philosophical, yet practical. It's a tool that anyone teaching editing will find rich and rewarding. Russial affords the copy editor--whether novice or advanced--the opportunity to understand not only what to do, but also why to do it.--Malcolm Gibson, William Allen White School of Journalism and Mass Communications, The University of KansasIn addition to explaining the what and how of copy editing, John Russial explains the why thoroughly and persuasively. A great strength of his book lies in the dignity and force with which he lays out the importance of our obscure but essential craft.--John E.
