  • Cambridge University Press Medieval Finitism

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisDiscussing various versions of two medieval arguments for the impossibility of infinity, this Element sheds light on early stages of the evolution of the notion of INFINITIES OF DIFFERENT SIZES. The first argument is called ''the Equality Argument'' and relies on the premise that all infinities are equal. The second argument is called ''the Mapping Argument'' and relies on the assumption that if one thing is mapped/ superposed upon another thing and neither exceeds the other, the two things are equal to each other. Although these arguments were initially proposed in the context of discussions against the possibility of infinities, they have played pivotal roles in the historical evolution of the notion of INFINITIES OF DIFFERENT SIZES.

  • Cambridge University Press Mathematics is mostly Analytic

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisThis Element outlines and defends an account of analyticity according to which mathematics is, for the most part, analytic. The author begins by looking at Quine''s arguments against the concepts of analyticity. He shows how Quine''s position on analyticity is related to his view on explication and shows how this suggests a way of defining analyticity that would meet Quine''s own standards for explication. The author then looks at Boghossian and his distinction between epistemic and metaphysical accounts of analyticity. Here he argues that there is a straightforward way of eliminating the confusion Boghossian sees with what he calls metaphysical accounts. The author demonstrates that the epistemic dimension of his epistemic account is almost entirely superfluous. The author then discusses how analyticity is related to truth, necessity, and questions of ontology. Finally, he discusses the vagueness of analyticity and also the relation of analyticity to the axiomatic method in mathematics.

  • Poetry and Number in GraecoRoman Antiquity

Cambridge University Press Poetry and Number in GraecoRoman Antiquity

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisPoetry and mathematics might seem to be worlds apart. Nevertheless, a number of Greek and Roman poets incorporated counting and calculation within their verses. Setting the work of authors such as Callimachus, Catullus and Archimedes in dialogue with the less well-known isopsephic epigrams of Leonides of Alexandria and the anonymous arithmetical poems preserved in the Palatine Anthology, the book reveals the various roles that number played in ancient poetry. Focussing especially on counting and arithmetic, Max Leventhal demonstrates how the discussion, rejection or enacting of these two operations was bound up with wider conceptions of the nature of poetry. Practices of composing, reading, interpreting and critiquing poetry emerge in these texts as having a numerical component. The result is an illuminating new way of approaching Greek and Latin poetry and one that reaches across modern disciplinary divisions.Table of ContentsIntroduction: Numbers Up; Part I. • Sociological Approaches to Theories of Law

Cambridge University Press Sociological Approaches to Theories of Law

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisSociological Approaches to Theories of Law applies empirical insights to examine theories of law proffered by analytical jurisprudents. The topics covered include artifact legal theory, law as a social construction, idealized accounts of the function of law, the dis-embeddeness of legal systems, the purported guidance function of law, the false social efficacy thesis, missteps in the quest to answer ''What is law?'', and the relationship between empiricism and analytical jurisprudence. The analysis shows that on a number of central issues analytical jurisprudents assert positions inconsistent with the social reality of law. Woven throughout the text, the author presents a theoretically and empirically informed account of law as a social institution. The overarching theme is that philosophical claims about the nature of law can be tested and improved through greater empirical input.Table of Contents1. The Problems With Artifact Legal Theory; 2. 15 in stock

Book SynopsisThis volume unites established authors and rising young voices in philosophical theology and philosophy of religion to offer the single most wide-ranging examination of theological determinism-in terms of both authors represented and issues investigated-published to date. Fifteen contributors present discussions about theological (or divine) determinism, the view that God determines everything that occurs in the world. Some authors provide arguments in favor of this position, while others provide considerations against it. Many contributors investigate the relationship between theological determinism and other philosophical issues (the principle of sufficient reason; the compatibility of determinism and free will; moral luck), theological doctrines (creationex nihilo; divine forgiveness; the inevitability of sin; the unity of Christ''s will with God''s), or moral attitudes and practices (trusting God; resenting the ill-will of others; resisting evil). This book is essential reading forTrade Review'This volume constitutes a rich conversation among a diverse group of authors on the question of divine determinism. 1 in stock

Book SynopsisThis book explores the life and work of Omar Khayyam as a provocateur of peace. While Khayyam is known for his poetry, he was foremost a prominent mathematician who looked at the world from a unique perspective. Using the transformative power of mathematics, he brought together seemingly irreconcilable concepts in his work. Through his art, philosophy, and mathematics, Khayyam sought to create harmony between what on the surface looks like a clash between his scientific view, romantic and often provocative poetry, and philosophy. The book sheds light on his spiritual and philosophical journey through a cross-sectional account of his poetry, philosophical view, and mathematics and science. It explores the complex inner life of a multidimensional scholar as he negotiated between faith and science, constructing a framework for peace by looking at the world as it presents itself to us, contemplating the temporality of life and enriching it with wisdom and joy.Historically and culTable of ContentsSeries Editor's PrefaceIntroduction1 The World Khayyam Was Born Into 2 The Creative Space 3 Life as Integration of Moments 4 Khayyam, the Peace Provocateur ConclusionAppendix: A Stylometric Analysis of Khayyam's PoetryReferencesIndex

  • Philosophical Sufism

Taylor & Francis Ltd Philosophical Sufism

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisAnalyzing the intersection between Sufism and philosophy, this volume is a sweeping examination of the mystical philosophy of Mu?yi-l-Din Ibn al-?Arabi (d. 637/1240), one of the most influential and original thinkers of the Islamic world. This book systematically covers Ibn al-?Arabi's ontology, theology, epistemology, teleology, spiritual anthropology and eschatology. While philosophy uses deductive reasoning to discover the fundamental nature of existence and Sufism relies on spiritual experience, it was not until the school of Ibn al-?Arabi that philosophy and Sufism converged into a single framework by elaborating spiritual doctrines in precise philosophical language. Contextualizing the historical development of Ibn al-?Arabi's school, the work draws from the earliest commentators of Ibn al-?Arabi's oeuvre, ?adr al-Din al-Qunawi (d. 673/1274), ?Abd al-Razzaq al-Kashani (d. ca. 730/1330) and Dawud al-Qay?ari (d. 751/1350), but also draws from the medieval heirs of his doctTrade Review“Mukhtar Ali's Philosophical Sufism is his second major contribution to analyzing the intersection between the two disciplines, written in a clear and accessible language and deserving a wide readership. Having supervised his dissertation some years ago, I am gratified to see that he has emerged as a prominent scholar in this field of Islamic Studies.”— Hamid Algar, Professor Emeritus of Persian and Islamic Studies, University of California, Berkeley“Exceptionally clear and clearly exceptional, Philosophical Sufism presents us with an analytically rigorous and spiritually sensitive explication of the main doctrines of the school of Ibn al-ʿArabī, which dominated spiritual and intellectual life in the pre-modern and early modern Islamic world for well over six hundred years. As such, this book recommends itself to not only intellectual historians and professional philosophers, but also those who would like to bring the riches of the Sufi metaphysical tradition to bear upon the impoverished scene of contemporary Islamic thought.”— Mohammed Rustom, author of Inrushes of the Heart: The Sufi Philosophy of ʿAyn al-Quḍāt“Philosophical Sufism is a very welcome addition to Islamic studies. Mukhtar Ali’s presentation of the intersections of philosophy and Sufism manages to maintain a balance that is wide-ranging, yet structured; accessible, yet profound. Lucidly written, with careful treatments of the key authors and texts of this important intellectual phenomenon, Philosophical Sufism will be invaluable for both researchers and instructors.”— Cyrus Ali Zargar, author of The Polished Mirror: Storytelling and the Pursuit of Virtue in Islamic Philosophy and Sufism.“Philosophical Sufism offers a highly accessible account of Islamic mysticism in the language of ratiocination. Undergraduates and adepts alike will benefit from the overview of Sufi themes and scholarly literature. Its pedagogical value lies in the clarity of discussion, the author’s effortless style and firm grasp of the topics. An indispensable contribution that bridges the gap between Islamic philosophy and mysticism.”— Harun Rasiah, Associate Professor of Ethnic Studies, California State University“With skillful erudition, Mukhtar Ali distills the central philosophical tenets of the school of Ibn al-ʿArabi, systematically covering ontology, epistemology, teleology, human vicegerency, the nature of imagination, and the relation between the macrocosm and microcosm. As one of very few introductory texts on the subject, it will prove invaluable particularly to students.”—Atif Khalil, author of Repentance and the Return to God: Tawba in Early Sufism Table of ContentsIntroduction 1. Book SynopsisIn a hyper-individualistic age and in the face of the narrowly focused, policy-oriented research ubiquitous in the social sciences, this book revisits the humanistic world-view that is integral to Norbert Elias's pre-eminent figurational-process sociology, with the aim of increasing the fund of sociological knowledge that has the human condition as its horizon.Clarifying the contentious post-philosophical' aspects in order to supplement standard histories of sociology with new insights, it offers incisive evaluations of some of the bewildered attempts by prominent sociologists to diagnose the malaise of contemporary globalised society. It also challenges the orthodox limitation of the empirical scope of sociology to modernity'. With its ominous warnings of the destructive prevalence of overcritique' in the discipline and lack of in-depth sociological psychology, Post-Philosophical Sociology will appeal to scholars of sociology, psychoanalysis, social philosophy, cultTrade Review"Richard Kilminster is a man of semantic precision and clear thought. In this book, his thinking trades with the intersection of philosophy and sociology - a shift from ethics to global guidance through social science. He convincingly shows how sociology has taken over the historical task of humanistic, secular leadership. He develops this startling enquiry by building on the 'mighty thinkers' of the sociological tradition, masterfully demonstrating the breadth of his erudition and knowledge." - Adrian Jitschin, Norbert Elias Foundation, Amsterdam, The Netherlands."For decades, sociological theorists have been in thrall to philosophers, and the results have often seemed irrelevant to the concerns of empirical sociological researchers. Richard Kilminster is well versed in the various schools of philosophy and makes out a compelling case for how sociology as the queen of the social sciences can be truly emancipated from their hegemony. And in so doing, he shows how theory and empirical research can be reunited." - Stephen Mennell, Professor Emeritus of Sociology, University College Dublin."Richard Kilminster is a man of semantic precision and clear thought. Working from the intersections of scholarship and activism and from a variety of disciplinary perspectives, the authors examine the shared roots of exploitation and violence against non-human animals and (human) social inequality and illuminate alternative ways of being and structuring relationships that are rooted in recognition and care. Highly readable and accessible, this timely book is an excellent text for advanced undergraduate and graduate courses and will be an indispensable resource for scholars working in Critical Animal Studies, Feminist Animal Studies, and related fields." Andrea Breen, University of Guelph"This is a vital collection which brings home just how significant feminist work, feminist passion and insight, has been and is to the field of Animal Studies. It outlines how feminist debates about care and non-hierarchical species differences have shaped an alternative vision of political progress for centuries, with feminist work relentlessly differentiating itself from universalising, anthropocentric abstractions. With a mix of established and new writers, the book is wide ranging in approaches and topics, from sexology to legal rights, vegan frictions to social media and sanctuaries, the collection traces the influences of "FAS", establishing its distinctiveness and priorities, both urgent and emerging."Fiona Probyn-Rapsey, University of Wollongong"This is a collection of trailblazing scholarship from writers in fields representing the rich and multidisciplinary character of contemporary feminist animal studies. Taken together the collection positions the field of feminist animal studies with both its own distinct scholarly identity and with a clear and pressing relevance and heritage within connate fields including mainstream and critical animal studies, ecofeminism as well as the breadth of disciplines now attending to the animal turn. Similarly, the collection is as rich in its historical pedigree as its contemporary relevance in a post covid world ready to specify and confront new and emerging challenges of scholarship and advocacy." Book SynopsisThis book develops a new approach to naturalizing phenomenology. The author proposes to integrate phenomenology with the mechanistic framework that offers new methodological perspectives for studying complex mental phenomena such as consciousness. While mechanistic explanatory models are widely applied in cognitive science, their approach to describing subjective phenomena is limited. The author argues that phenomenology can fill this gap. He proposes two novel ways of integrating phenomenology and mechanism. First, he presents a new reading of phenomenological analyses as functional analyses. Such functional phenomenology delivers a functional sketch of a target system and provides constraints on the space of possible mechanisms. Second, he develops the neurophenomenological approach in the direction of dynamic modeling of experience. He shows that neurophenomenology can deliver dynamical constraints on mechanistic models and thus inform the search for an Trade Review"Mechanisms and Consciousness expresses a new voice in the naturalizing phenomenology debate. Marek Pokropski proposes to rethink the issues involved in naturalization in the context of recent discussions about explanatory integration in the cognitive sciences. He provides a lucid overview of the relevant explanatory models, and he articulates a fresh and thought-provoking look at Husserlian phenomenology, bridging it with the seemingly opposite, neomechanistic approach. I recommend this book for those who are intrigued about how to integrate the first-person study of consciousness with cognitive neuroscience."Shaun Gallagher, Lillian and Morrie Moss Professor of Philosophy, University of Memphis, USA"Marek Pokropski's book is an excellent contribution to the discussion on mechanistic explanation. By bringing naturalized phenomenology under the mechanistic umbrella, Pokropski offers a highly compelling view on how naturalized phenomenology may proceed further in the study of consciousness. For all serious students of consciousness and phenomenology, this book is a must-read."Marcin Miłkowski□, Polish Academy of Sciences"As Pokropski rightly notes, work on naturalizing phenomenology is often couched in terms of 20th Century conceptions of scientific explanation and integration, ignoring the growing popularity of mechanistic accounts in recent years. Pokropski’s book should change that for the better. Anyone seeking to integrate phenomenology with cognitive science will benefit from reading it."Notre Dame Philosophical Reviews"Marek Pokropski’s book is a valuable and honest voice in the still heated discussion on the relationship of phenomenology and cognitive sciences. What distinguishes the presented position is, above all, the original, mechanistic-based, integrative perspective, which assumes, first of all, the cooperation of researchers working in various paradigms."Michał Piekarski, Philosophical Psychology"Pokropski shows a strong familiarity with an impressive range of topics across different traditions and disciplines. Readers unfamiliar with work at the intersection of phenomenology and cognitive neuroscience, or with work on mechanistic explanation in the mind sciences, would benefit from a great deal of the text. Overall, Pokropski’s work makes a contribution to the ongoing dialogue between phenomenological philosophy and the empirical sciences of the mind. Readers sympathetic with the (neo)mechanistic approach to cognition will find a number of places in which that approach is brought into fruitful engagement with topics from Husserl’s work."Michael Madary, Husserl Studies"This is an excellent work which makes an innovative and fruitful contribution to the literature. What is novel about the book is its detailed consideration of a topic that has garnered much attention in cognitive science and analytic philosophy over the last 70 years, but which remains (comparatively) understudied in the phenomenological movement: explanation."Heath Williams, Phenomenology and the Cognitive SciencesTable of ContentsIntroductionPart I. By using the age-old idea of cosmos'the order of the worldto foreground ideas of a good order and chaos, reciprocity and more-than-human agency, this book interrogates the Anthropocene in Australia, focusing on notions of colonisation, farming, mining, bioethics, technology, environmental justice and sovereignty. Three major aspects covered by the book Include, but are certainly not limited to, the enduring tradition of Japanese ancestor veneration, China's transition from state-sponsored materialism to the increasing belief in some form of afterlife, as well as the diversity in senses of, or disbelief in, life after death in the United States. Through these diverse first-hand testimonies the book reveals that underlying these changes in each society there is a shift from collective to individual belief, with people developing their own visions of what may, or may not, happen after death. Book SynopsisThis important book offers a critical and timely reassessment of one of the cornerstones of analytical psychology, Jungâs concept of archetypes.Exploring not only Jungâs original writings but also the range of interpretations used by Jungian scholars today, the book argues that Jungâs conceptualization of archetype theory is not a single coherent theory; rather, it is four different theories which must be understood separately. Roesler goes onto deconstruct these four ideas: the biological, the anthropological, the transcendental and the psychological in context with contemporary insights from each of these disciplines. A thorough analysis of the state of knowledge in the respective disciplines (i.e. biology, anthropology, religious and mythological studies) makes clear that the claims archetype theory makes in these fields have no support and should be given up. Deconstructing Archetype Theory concludes by arguing that a universal process of psychological transformation is the only part of archetype theory which should be maintained, as it provides a map for psychotherapy.Rigorous and insightful, this is a book that will fascinate scholars and practitioners of analytical psychology, as well as anyone with an interest in Jungâs original work.Table of Contents1. 1 in stock

Book SynopsisThis book traces the translation history of twentieth-century German philosophy into English, with significant layovers in Paris, and proposes an innovative approach to long-standing difficulties in its translation.German philosophyâs reputation for profundity is often understood to lie in Germanâs polysemous vocabulary, which is notoriously difficult to translate even into its close relative, English. Hawkins shows the merit in a strategy of âœdifferential translation,â which involves translating conceptually dense German terms with multiple different terms in the target text, rather than the conventional standard of selecting one term in English for consistent translation. German Philosophy in English Translation explores how debates around this strategy have polarized both the French-language and English-language translation landscapes. Well-known translators and commissioners such as Jean Beaufret, Adam Phillips, and Joan Stambaugh come out boldly in favor, and others such as Jean Laplanche and Terry Pinkard polemically against it. Drawing on Hans Blumenbergâs work on metaphor, German Philosophy in English Translation questions prevalent norms around the translation of terminology that obscure the metaphoric dimension of German philosophical vocabulary. This book is a crucial reference for translators and researchers interested in the German language, and particularly for scholars in translation studies, philosophy, and intellectual history.

Although the nativist-empiricist debate has been revivified by recent advances in molecular biology, such ideas date back to the Socratic dialogue on the innate mathematical sense possessed by an illiterate slave. Book SynopsisThe philosophical activity of modern Germany represents a peak in the history of philosophy beginning from Thales in ancient Greece. This book attempts to reconsider the conventional image of 19th-century German philosophy. To this end, it illuminates a forgotten philosophical stream contemporaneous with so-called German idealism. From this perspective, this book examines the philosophy of Jakob Friedrich Fries, a philosopher contemporaneous and in confrontation with Hegel. By examining Fries' standpoint, the book attempts to reconstruct the picture of 19th-century German philosophy. In the 19th and 20th centuries, philosophers other than Kant, Fichte, Schelling, and Hegel especially Fries had a significant influence on the history of philosophy, constituting an alternative genealogy to Hegel's. • Plurihistoricity

    Taylor & Francis Plurihistoricity

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThis book situates historical scholarship within a plurihistoricity of contemporary historical culture, exploring conflicting conceptions of historical change in technological utopias of human enhancement, in prospects of human extinction, in societal responses to the Anthropocene, and in the imperative of bringing colonial patterns of historical injustice to justice.Contemporary societies increasingly reclaim history from the academic pursuit of historiography. On the one hand, societal engagement in history is growing palpably. History is literally everywhere: in the fallen statues of past political regimes, in trajectories of environmental degradation, and in technological prospects of space expansion. On the other hand, societal demand for history seems to diminish rather than strengthen the authority of professionalized historical studies. What do these societal historicities stand for? How do they create pasts that matter? What futures do they desire or attempt to avoid? How do they view the historical transitions into those futures? And what is the societal role of historical scholarship and scholarly conceptions of history in the plurihistoricity of contemporary historical culture?By addressing these questions, Simonâs book is essential reading for everyone interested in the present and future of viewing the world historically.
