Bookmarks Publications Red Shelley
Book Synopsis''First published in 1980, this edition of Red Shelley has been issued as a tribute to Paul Foot on the twentieth anniversary of his untimely death in 2004. Anyone lucky enough to have heard Foot speaking about Shelley at the packed-out meetings in the early 1980s will recognise that all the passion and emotion of those meetings are poured onto the pages of this book. Foot writes in a clear, straightforward, and expressive prose that rescues Shelley from the distortions of the establishment and the complexity of the academy. Red Shelley is a powerful polemic that offers the best possible introduction to the radical and revolutionary content of Shelley''s poetry and political philosophy.'' - Paul O''Brien from the foreword

Zoonomia is a groundbreaking exploration of diverse elements of biology, medicine, and the natural international. Erasmus Darwin's Zoonomia is a comprehensive examination of the standards governing natural lifestyles. The book covers a huge range of subjects, which includes anatomy, physiology, pathology, and the philosophy of existence. Darwin's work become high-quality for its early advocacy of evolutionary ideas, as he recommended that species could change through the years via a technique of model. One of the maximum giant contributions of Zoonomia is its exploration of the idea of transmutation, which laid the groundwork for later evolutionary theories. Erasmus Darwin proposed the concept that all life forms shared a commonplace ancestry and that they could undergo slow variations to better suit their environments. Although not as well-known as his grandson Charles Darwin's later paintings on evolution, Zoonomia changed into an important precursor to the improvement of evolutionary thought. It also contributed to the wider scientific and clinical discussions of its time, making it an enormous work in the history of biology and herbal philosophy.

Book SynopsisPublished anonymously in 1723, "The Fable of the Bees" by Bernard Mandeville came to be regarded as the epitome of immorality. It is a naturalistic account of the mechanism of human desire. This abridged edition also includes "The Fable" and background readings from two sources.Trade ReviewHundert is especially good at demonstrating how vital Mandeville's ideas are as a major foundation for more famous Enlightenment thinkers such as Rousseau, Diderot, Voltaire and others. . . . The additions of Nicole and Bayle will be useful in courses on 18th century ethics and morals, and in general surveys of Enlightenment thought. This is probably the best one-volume edition of the main works of Mandeville now available. --Irwin Primer, Rutgers UniversityAn excellent edition of a much needed text. E. J. Hundert's addition of clear biographies, a coherent introduction, an appendix, and suggested readings adds to the book's evident value in graduate and undergraduate teaching. Hundert has done an admirable job of contextualizing Mandeville's Fable in the philosophical debates of human morality and sociability that were crucial to the development of liberalism. There can be no better and affordable introduction to the sources for students than Hundert's new edition of this classic. --Fabio Lopez-Lazari, Arizona State University

Hackett Publishing Co, Inc De Caelo
Book SynopsisThis new translation of De Caelo (On the Heavens) fits seamlessly with other volumes in the New Hackett Aristotle series, enabling Anglophone readers to study Aristotle’s work in a way previously not possible. The Introduction describes the book that lies ahead, explaining what it is about, what it is trying to do, how it goes about doing it, and what sort of audience it presupposes. Sequentially numbered endnotes provide the information most needed at each juncture, while a detailed Index indicates the places where focused discussion of key notions occurs.Trade Review"The De Caelo can be quite difficult for a first-time reader. C. D. C. Reeve's fluid and accurate translation, along with his superb Introduction and 560 endnotes (in effect functioning as a commentary), are bound to make this work much more accessible, while at the same time being a highly useful tool for seasoned Aristotle scholars." —Robert Mayhew, professor of philosophy at Seton Hall University"Reeve's lucid and accurate translation of this difficult work will be of great value both to historians of philosophy and to philosophers interested in the topics Aristotle addresses for their own sake. The generous Introduction and notes provide the reader without Greek with full access to Aristotle’s thinking." —William Charlton, author of many works on Aristotle's philosophy of nature and contributor of five volumes to the Ancient Commentators on Aristotle series"From among the eight Aristotelian treatises translated by C. D. C. Reeve thus far, De Caelo belongs, together with Generation of Animals (2019), to the less often rendered. This is the first complete English version since Guthrie (1939), and its virtues are the same as those of previous volumes, including the clarity of translation (here based on Paul Moraux’s 1965 Budé edition) and a thorough Introduction. In this case, the introductory study is especially welcome, since explaining the place of De Caelo in the corpus is no easy task. . . . All things considered, De Caelo adds another building block to Reeve's admirable Aristotelian edifice." —Karel Thein, Charles University, Prague, in Bryn Mawr Classical Review

Hackett Publishing Co, Inc Applied Ethics: An Impartial Introduction
Book SynopsisApplied Ethics: An Impartial Introduction prepares readers to evaluate selected classical and contemporary problems in applied ethics in a way that does justice to their complexity without sacrificing clarity or fairness of representation. Its balanced exposition and analysis, enhanced by helpful pedagogical features, make it an ideal book for introducing the ethics of real-life problems including abortion, animal rights, disability, the environment, poverty, and punishment.Trade Review"Jackson, Goldschmidt, Crummett, and Chan are experienced teachers with a multitude of insights on the problems they explain in this splendid introduction to applied ethics. It is selective in focus but comprehensive in coverage; it is philosophically rigorous but remarkably clear in presentation; and each of the six sections is substantive enough for a good part of a course while the whole could occupy a full term. The book is an excellent choice as a main introductory text in applied ethics but so well laid out and referenced as to be a resource for students working in this field at any level. It has the clarity and concreteness needed for an introduction and the thoroughness needed in a higher-level study of the moral problems it explores." —Robert Audi, John A. O’Brien Professor of Philosophy, University of Notre Dame"An engaging, well written, and rigorous introduction to applied ethics. Jackson, Goldschmidt, Crummett, and Chan have produced an impressive work. Their text covers many different topics, some of which are not often covered by similar books, even as they become more and more relevant in the current debate (e.g., wild animal suffering and charitable giving). I particularly liked the way in which the authors help students to test their own level of understanding, and how they encourage students to deepen their knowledge of the topics they find most interesting. I look forward to using this book in my next undergraduate course." —Francesca Minerva, University of Milan"The authors have done a marvelous job with Applied Ethics. They’ve chosen great topics, they’ve explained contemporary debates crisply and clearly, they’ve obviously made a huge effort to represent every position charitably. Moreover, they’ve made smart decisions to enhance reader comprehension and engagement, such as scattering questions throughout the text, rather than burying them at the end of each chapter. It’s going to be a pleasure to teach with this book!" —Bob Fischer, Department of Philosophy, Texas State University

Hackett Publishing Co, Inc Classics in Western Philosophy of Art: Major
Book SynopsisIn this synthetic introduction to the history of the philosophy of art, Noël Carroll elucidates and analyzes selected writings on art by Plato, Aristotle, Hutcheson, Hume, Kant, Hegel, Schopenhauer, Tolstoy, and Bell. Carroll’s narrative tracks developments between major positions in philosophy of art, ranging from the idea that art is unavoidably embedded in society to the evolution of the notion that art is autonomous ("art for art’s sake"), thereby setting the stage for continuing debates in the philosophy of art.Presupposing no prior background, and useful on its own or accompanying the reading of primary works, Classics in Western Philosophy of Art is ideal as a text for introductory undergraduate and graduate courses in philosophy of art and aesthetics, or for anyone interested in learning about the origin of some of our most fundamental conceptions of art in the Western tradition.Trade Review"Indispensable turn-by-turn directions for those navigating the ideas of nine philosophers who set the stage for thinking about art and society. Clear and comprehensive, Noël Carroll is the perfect guide to the history of aesthetics."—Dominic McIver Lopes, University of British Columbia"Carroll’s Classics in Western Philosophy of Art is a masterful series of commentaries on nine classical writings on art by philosophers in the Western tradition—learned and penetrating in exegesis, equally penetrating in critique. It’s not just one philosopher after another. Carroll takes note of what later writers say, explicitly or implicitly, about earlier writers, and imagines what those earlier writers might have said in response. He is host to a conversation. How I wish these commentaries had been available when I was still teaching philosophy of art! I would have been spared my own exegetical labors over these often-difficult texts, and my teaching would have been immeasurably improved."—Nicholas Wolterstorff, Noah Porter Professor Emeritus of Philosophical Theology, Yale University

Book SynopsisAn Introduction to Utilitarianism: From Theory to Practice is a state-of-the-art text, simultaneously accessible to introductory students and informative for more advanced readers. Two key features set it apart. First, its comprehensive coverage of the arguments for and against utilitarianism is unparalleled. Second, it takes seriously the practical implications of utilitarianism for how we should live, with a particular emphasison utilitarianism's impartial beneficenceand its focus on effectiveness. Guided by the conviction that practical ethics is more about how best to use our limited time and resources than which victims to hit with trolleys in thought experiments, its practical upshots should prove amenable to utilitarians and non-utilitarians alike.

Oxford University Press Inc The Enlightenments Most Dangerous Woman
Book SynopsisSuppressed for centuries, the ideas of French philosopher Émilie Du Châtelet are ever relevant today...Just as the Enlightenment was gaining momentum throughout Europe, philosopher Émilie Du Châtelet broke through the many barriers facing women at the time and published a major philosophical treatise in French. Within a few short years, she became famous: she was read and debated from Russia to Prussia, from Switzerland to England, from up north in Sweden to down south in Italy. This was not just remarkable because she was a woman, but because of the substance of her contributions. While the men in her milieu like Voltaire and Kant sought disciples to promote their ideas, Du Châtelet promoted intellectual autonomy. She counselled her readers to read the classics, but never to become a follower of another''s ideas. Her proclamation that a true philosopher must remain an independent thinker, rather than a disciple of some supposedly great man like Isaac Newton or René Descartes, posed a threat to an emerging consensus in the Enlightenment. And that made her dangerous. After all, if young women took Du Châtelet''s advice to heart, if they insisted on thinking for themselves, they might demand a proper education--the exclusion of women from the colleges and academies of Europe might finally end. And if young women thought for themselves, rather than listening to the ideas of the men around them, that might rupture the gender-based social order itself. Because of the threat that she posed, the men who created the modern philosophy canon eventually wrote Du Châtelet out of their official histories. After she achieved immense fame in the middle of the eighteenth century, her ideas were later suppressed, or attributed to the men around her. For generations afterwards, she was forgotten. Now we can hear her voice anew when we need her more than ever. Her lessons of intellectual independence and her rejection of hero worship remain ever relevant today.

John Wiley and Sons Ltd There Is No Such Thing as Cultural Identity
Book SynopsisAs people throughout the world react to globalization and revert to nationalism, they are proclaiming distinct cultural identities for themselves. Cultural identity seems to offer a defensive wall against the homogenizing effects of globalization and a framework for nurturing and protecting cultural differences. In this short and provocative book, François Jullien argues that this emphasis on cultural identity is a mistake. Cultures exist in relation to one another and they are constantly mutating and transforming themselves. There is no cultural identity, there are only what Jullien calls ‘resources’. Resources are created in a certain space, they are available to all and belong to no one. They are not exclusive, like the values to which we proclaim loyalty; instead, we deploy them or not, activate them or let them fall by the wayside, and each of us as individuals is responsible for these choices. This conceptual shift requires us to redefine three key terms – the universal, the uniform and the common. Equipped with these concepts, we can rethink the dialogue between cultures in a way that avoids what Jullien sees as the false debate about identity and difference. This powerful critique of the modern shibboleth of cultural identity will appeal to anyone interested in the great social and political questions of our time.Trade Review“When stakes are high, philosophy becomes concise. Jullien’s concise and compelling text overcomes the false consciousness of cultural identity and transforms the impasse of identity politics at local and international levels into viable paths.”Shiqiao Li, University of Virginia

Semiotext (E) Capital Hates Everyone: Fascism or Revolution
Book SynopsisWhy we must reject the illusory consolations of technology and choose revolution over fascism. We are living in apocalyptic times. In Capital Hates Everyone, famed sociologist Maurice Lazzarato points to a stark choice emerging from the magma of today''s world events: fascism or revolution. Fascism now drives the course of democracies as they grow less and less liberal and increasingly subject to the law of capital. Since the 1970s, Lazzarato writes, capital has entered a logic of war. It has become, by the power conferred on it by financialization, a political force intent on destruction. Lazzarato urges us to reject the illusory consolations of a technology-abetted "new" kind of capitalism and choose revolution over fascism.
