Book SynopsisParenting isn't easy, and parenting a child with a Global Developmental Delay, Intellectual Disability, or Autism can be challenging. However, a lot of parenting strategies are straightforward once you get your head around them. With the right knowledge, environment, interactions, responses and understanding, you can help reduce your child's anxiety, build their confidence, and help them develop learning and communication skills.Based on his work as a Clinical Psychologist working with children developing differently, Dr Joshua Muggleton provides a comprehensive, step-by-step parenting plan that will support you to embed good practice at home from day one. The book outlines how to provide the right environment for your child to learn and grow, how to model and encourage new skills, how to organise routines, and how to make these strategies work in family life. By getting things right for your child early on, you can help prevent emotional and behavioural challenges before they arise, and will be better able to understand and support your child when they do. These strategies are designed to work across all neurodevelopmental conditions, and take into account co-occurring conditions such as ADHD, meaning none of the advice in the book requires your child to have a specific diagnosis. It also includes downloadable examples of charts, how-to guides for creating visual resources tailored to your child's individual needs, and downloadable chapters on sleep and siblings.Trade ReviewEngagingly written, full of wisdom and warmth, this book expertly sets out our understanding of what enabling a child labelled 'different not less' looks like. Drawn from the experiences of children, families and professionals, as well as research, it is authentic and encouraging. A wonderful read that feels like having a knowing friend by your side reminding you what you're doing right, rather than someone at your shoulder telling you what you're doing wrong. -- Tony Osgood, author of Supporting Positive Behaviour in Intellectual Disabilities and AutismA gentle and encouraging guide for parents, Developing Differently does a brilliant job of laying out in plain language all of the complexity and nuance of years of knowledge and experience from research and clinical practice. Dr Muggleton's sincere empathy and insight into the experiences of the families he is writing for is clear on every page. This feels like a book that parents will return to again and again. -- The Cerebra Network for Neurodevelopmental DisordersAs a parent, I often struggle to find the time or energy to read. Developing Differently, however, was engaging from the outset and it was easy to navigate to specific sections relevant to my family's needs for information and advice. Muggleton's writing is relaxed, respectful, and relatable, with some humour thrown in for good measure when appropriate. I believe it will bring comfort and support to many who, like me, are navigating the journey of parenting a child or children with additional support needs. -- Elaine Scougal, parent and PhD scholarA book for parents that places the human beings at the centre of the thinking, explains strategies and talks about what really happens. I thoroughly recommend this book it makes good advice practical and doable. -- Gina Davies, speech & language therapist and founder and owner of Attention Autism™This is the book that I've always wished the families I work with could access. Friendly, accessible and comprehensive. I commend it to any family with a neurodivergent child. -- Dr Max Davie, Consultant Community PaediatricianThis is the ideal book for the parent of a child developing differently, I wish it had been available when my son was diagnosed. A wealth of practical advice is delivered in a very parent-friendly way with gentle humour which makes it very easy to read. -- Sara Truman, parent

Ignored by mums everywhere and taken advantage by babies of all ages, being a dad is arguably the world's toughest job (after motherhood, of course). 1 in stock

Book SynopsisPart of the How to Help series of books exploring issues commonly faced by children and young people at home and in school, The Gifted Learner offers an accessible introduction to how high ability students can best be supported to achieve their full potential. Gifted (or more able, or high potential) learners are often overlooked in education, partly because they are diverse and partly because they are seen as bright and thus able to cope without support. In fact giftedness does not mean consistent high ability; gifted children may not excel in all subjects, and many are emotionally immature. As a result they are vulnerable. Drawing on case studies to offer a complete guide to what giftedness is how it can be supported, Fidelma Healy Eames argues that gifted learners must be recognised, understood and nurtured holistically at cognitive and emotional levels - and shows how parents, carers, teachers and schools can help.Table of ContentsSeries Preface; About the Author; Author's Preface; How to Use This Book Part 1: Introduction 1. Pavilion Publishing and Media Ltd Making Space for Autism: Strategies for assessing

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisHistorically, there has been an expectation that autistic children and adults should conform their behaviour to social norms, with strategies and interventions centred around navigating spaces and situations with minimal damage. This person-centred environmental assessment and modification programme moves away from this, with the aim to provide information and tools for assessing and reflecting on features of the autistic person's environment to best support their comfort, autonomy and agency. Written as a collaboration between autistic and non-autistic professionals, the authors break down each environmental element (physical, sensory, emotional, communicative and social) by chapter and include checklists as reference points to equip the reader with a framework from which to begin. This accessible, strengths-focused approach to supporting autistic people across different areas of their life reflects a paradigm shift from one where autism is treated as a deficit or impairment to one of strength, acceptance and autonomy.Table of ContentsChapter 1 - What is autism? An introduction.: the language of autism, the 24-hour child, intersectionality. Chapter 2 - Trauma and its impact: masking and autistic burnout; emotional and physical responses; what a good support person looks like. Rules like these can be really frustrating - but they don't have to be!Why do I have to? looks at a set of everyday situations that provide challenges for children at home, with their friends, and at school. Laurie Leventhal-Belfer empathizes with children's wish to do things their way, explains clearly why their way does not work, and provides a list of practical suggestions for how to cope with these challenges and avoid feelings of frustration. This is the ideal book for children who have difficulty coping with the expectations of daily living, as well as for their parents and the professionals who work with them.Trade ReviewLaurie Leventhal-Belfer's WHY DO I HAVE TO? is a thoughtfully structured guide for children who are fustrated with everyday rules and adults who are fustrated with those children. This short book is packed with a comprehensive set of questions, phrased from a child's perspective, dealing primarily with social expectations...This book will be an invaluable addition to the shelves for the children who are challenged by the expectations of daily living. The insightful questions, thoughtful answers, and clinically tested suggestions will decrease fustration for children and parents alike. -- Journal of Autism and Developmental DisordersAs a SENCO I would recommend this book to staff in schools supporting pupils within the autistic spectrum and/or with ADHD. Although, this book is not explicitly aimed at children on the autism spectrum, it certainly tackles issues particular to this population. The author clearly has experience in this area.. she is founder and director of The Friends Program, the therapeutic group project for children with Asperger's in the US... it is certainly a resource that educational psychologists could use in their work with service users. It also be recommended as reading for some children, teachers and parents who are having particular issues with dealing with rules and need a logical explanation and some guidance. It is accessible and easy to read with amusing picture to add interest and most of all, there is a positive ethos underpinning this book, which helps reassure children that they are not alone in their frustrations and there are ways to help. -- Joanna Hill, Trainee EP * Debate - British Psychological Society *If you want a child with Asperger's syndrome to comply with a social or family rule, it is very important to explain the logical reason to comply. Laurie's book provides the logic for compliance that will be invaluable for parents and teachers. I know this book will become regular bed time reading and be used many times at home and at school. -- Professor Tony AttwoodDr. Laurie clearly understands how children with limited flexibility and difficulty coping think and respond. She has used her clinical experience to teach us how to help these children succeed. Dr. Laurie has provided a format, similar to Social Stories (TM), for reducing stress in daily life and for minimizing conflict stemming from unwritten or everyday rules. While there is no one solution for every child, the stories can be easily adapted for each child. Book SynopsisAlready the mother of five children, Lana Grant's late diagnosis of autism at age 38 transformed her experience of her sixth pregnancy. Based on her own experiences of the challenges and joys of pregnancy and motherhood, this witty, entertaining read provides insight into the unique challenges encountered by mothers on the spectrum and provides tips and strategies for understanding and overcoming them. From physical and emotional changes, through to changes of routine and a lack of sleep, Lana Grant explains what women on the spectrum should expect in pregnancy and motherhood, as well as preparing them for the inevitable unexpected! Her stories of learning to make allowances for her feelings and her witty anecdotes offer support and a like-minded voice to women on the spectrum. She discusses everything from learning to understand the language used by medical professionals, who to tell what and when, and the dangers of over-sharing, through to sensory challenges during and after delivery, what to expect from staff in the hospital, and the social challenges of interacting with other mums before and after the birth. The first book on this important topic of pregnancy and motherhood on the autism spectrum, From Here to Maternity provides much needed support, insight and understanding for women on the spectrum, their family and friends, and the professionals working with them during and after pregnancy.Trade ReviewAs a mother diagnosed with autism after the birth of my children myself, I can relate to the anxieties and experiences that Lana has presented in this ground-breaking book on pregnancy and motherhood for women with autism. By sharing her personal journey, along with clear information and tips for medical staff, hopefully this book will help allay some of the fears and answer the many questions that expectant mothers on the autism spectrum will have. -- Sarah Hendrickx, author of several books, including Love, Sex and Long-Term Relationships: What People with Asperger Syndrome Really Really WantIn this extremely readable and engaging book, Lana Grant gives graphic details of her pregnancies to illustrate how the challenges are magnified for those with Asperger Syndrome. However, giving birth and caring for her children have been the happiest and most significant parts of her life to date. This is a must read for all medical staff and others in the field of autism. -- Dr. Glenys Jones, Chartered Psychologist, Autism Centre for Education and Research, University of BirminghamHappily ignoring the too common notion that women with an ASD cannot or should not have children, Lana Grant gives us From Here to Maternity, the baby book bible for those of us on the spectrum. Her language use can be taken literally, her explanations are visual enough to contemplate, and the extra tidbits of information not typically contained in everyday pregnancy books make this book a welcome addition to our female autism community and to any other woman who struggles with literalness, sensory integration, inflexibility, and/or perseverations. 1 in stock

Book SynopsisAnxiety is the root cause of many of the difficulties experienced by people on the autism spectrum, and is often caused by things such as a change in routine, or sensory overload. Deborah Lipsky takes a practical look at what happens when things spiral out of control, exploring what leads to meltdowns and tantrums, and what can be done to help. Drawing on her own extensive personal experience and using real-life examples to explain how autistic people think, the author distinguishes between meltdowns and tantrums, showing how they are different, how each can begin, and most importantly, how to identify triggers and prevent outbursts from happening in the first place. Practical and simple solutions to avoiding anxiety are offered throughout, and these are accompanied by calming techniques and suggestions for dealing with tantrums when they occur. This book will be an essential read for those on the autism spectrum, their families and friends, professionals working with them, and anybody else with an interest in autism spectrum conditions.Trade ReviewA highly engaging texts, with illustrations drawn from personal experience, From Anxiety to Meltdown provides valuable insights into daily challenges faced by individuals with autism spectrum and highlights how aspects of the environment both with regard to sensory issues and cognitive demands can increase anxiety and lead to meltdown... I would recommend this text to parents, teachers, and professionals who care for and support childrn and young people with autism. -- DebateThis excellent book explains how anxiety causes meltdowns in autism... The book is well written and informative; much of the information is a reminder of how reactions to the environment can be so differnt etween individuals with autism and neurotypicals. -- AukidsThis book acts as a guide for people who want to gain a better understanding about how individuals on the autistic spectrum deal with anxiety, meltdowns and manifest tantrums... The author offers some good ideas and guides on how to avoid and reduce anxiety in certain situations... Deborah Lipsky certainly guides the reader through how anxiety can affect people with autism and how to deal with this in a very personal, approachable manner. -- Youth in MindPeople with autism are very good at worrying, and we now have neurological studies suggesting that high levels of anxiety are indeed a constitutional aspect of Autism Spectrum Disorders. Deborah Lipsky's book provides a wealth of insight, explanations and practical strategies based on her personal experiences. As a clinician, I endorse her analysis of the causes of anxiety and meltdowns, and know she will receive the gratitude of parents, teachers, psychologists and people with an Autism Spectrum Disorder for her recommendations and interventions. This book could be more effective than medication, and is less expensive than a consultation with a clinical psychologist. -- Tony Attwood, Clinical Psychologist and author of The Complete Guide to Asperger's SyndromeI very much relate to and appreciate Deborah Lipsky's book so much I think the title should read 'From Anxiety to Meltdown to Living Lovely'. From now on when people ask me to explain why I have meltdowns and how they can help me recover I think I will just hand them a copy of this book. -- Liane Holliday Willey, EdD author of Safety Skills for Asperger Women: How to Save a Perfectly Good Female LifeDeborah Lipsky provides her inside view on anxiety and meltdowns in autism. She explains how she controls her anxiety. -- Temple Grandin, author of Thinking in Pictures and The Way I See ItWritten by a person with high functioning autism this book provides first hand experiences of what it is like to be autistic. That alone would make this book a must read but this book is so much more... The book is easy reading and the author provides interesting anecdotes to explain points which keeps the readers interest... on finishing it the reader really feels like they have a clear understanding of the triggers of meltdowns and strategies to support the individual. I feel that this is a useful book for anyone working or caring for children or young people with autism. -- NAPLIC MattersDeborah Lipsky's analogy of a person with autism being rather like a tiger was thought provoking and quite understandable. The book is easy to read and uses easy to understand language making it accessible to the majority. It gives an excellent insight into the mind of someone with autism and how the condition can affect them. The information about how to calm a person with autism was particularly interesting from a non autistic point of view and how the use of scripts can help lower the anxieties of people with Autism. The use of the examples in the book also give a better understanding of how situations are interpreted differently between autistic and non autistic people.A good book for anyone working with people on the Autistic Spectrum. -- OAASISDeborah Lipsky, the self dubbed Raccoon Lady, has written a must read for people like me... So here, Deborah provides great insight into the thought processes and thinking patterns applicable to many people on the spectrum,. Her perspective may not be unique, in that there are lots of other autistic people with similar viewpoints, but trouble is that not enough of them have written a book about it to enlighten us. So here is the opportunity... Her insights, tips and approach should prove invaluable to many, but for me, I was particularly interested to read about the interplay between anxiety, OCD, stress and how these elements can affect someone in their adult life. Her account provides ample evidence about mechanisms as possible, as well as the need to teach and practice flexible thinking. I was delighted to read about Deborah's challenging and fulfilling life, which I'm sure will prove inspirational to both parents and autistic children. It would be far too sweeping to say, "Nothing holds you back except the limits imposed by yourself", but the impulse to self-censure is a commonplace part of the human condition. -- Whitterer on AutismI actually enjoyed reading this book and found it very readable. I particularly appreciated the personal anecdotes and her forthright opinions....She is very careful to clearly explain and then illustrate everything with examples and thereby ensures that the reader fully understands what causes meltdowns and how they feel....She gives many suggestions about how to spot when a meltdown is imminent and to prevent it before its too late. There is also a mine of information about how to adapt a person's life so that they are not overwhelmed, without having to totally withdraw from life and how to prepare for unwanted but inevitable changes to plans....I totally agree with her focus and feel that she has struck the perfect balance between helping the child/adult learn strategies to manage and control their anxiety and also those around them putting in an equal amount of effort to accommodate the person on the spectrum....On a personal level I could relate to much of what she says and I suspect that many parents with children on the spectrum will find it not only instructive in helping their child, but also for themselves....If you are struggling with a child who is constantly being aggressive and having meltdowns this book goes a long way to explaining why and what you can do about it....For parents who are beginning to feel that their child is just bad, or where schools feel that the child is just badly disciplined then this book will help to change their false cognitions....This is a must read for parents, learning support assistants, social workers, teachers and psychologists and will give them much needed insight and empathy." -- AS TeensDrawing on her extensive personal experience as a high-functioning autistic individual and using real-life examples to explain how autistic people think, the author highlight how meltdowns and tantrums differ from each other and discusses the sources they can stem from... Practical and simple solutions for avoiding anxiety are offered throughout, accompanied by calming techniques and suggestions for ways to deal with tantrums, when they occur. -- Human GivensTable of ContentsIntroduction. 1. A completely revised chapter on the autism spectrum by Tony Attwood explains not only new understanding in the field, but the new diagnostic criteria, and the anticipated usage of the term 'Asperger's Syndrome'. Dr. Kutscher provides accessible information on causes, symptoms, interactions with other conditions, and treatments. Dr. Kutscher takes complex medical information and transforms it into a reader friendly format for the non-professional. He has taken so much great information by so many renowned professionals in the field and combined it with his own understanding and empathy in a truly unique book. His examples are so true to life it brought back many memories. I only wish I had his list of tips and strategies 30 years ago when we started our journey with ADHD. I will be recommending this book to parents, educators and anyone else wishing to help these children lead happy and successful lives. -- Heidi Bernhardt, mother of three grown sons with ADHD and Founder, President and Executive Director of CADDAC (Centre for ADHD Awareness Canada)Kids in the Syndrome Mix offers parents and teachers much needed hope and guidance as they navigate the often overwhelming world of supporting kids with co-existing conditions. It will now be a life raft for children's advocates trying to find their kids a fitting diagnosis that will secure services in accordance with the heavily revised DSM-5. That's great news, but the best news is this - Kutscher knows how to express the challenges of figuring out our wonderfully complex kids with neurobiological disorders, just as he knows how to calm our concerns and help us find realistic solutions to the myriad of issues that shadow our special children. This is a book for everyone interested in any area of child development. -- Liane Holliday Willey, EdD, author of Pretending to be Normal, Safety Skills for Asperger Women, Asperger Syndrome in Adolescence, and Asperger Syndrome in the FamilyIt's difficult enough to write a book for professionals, parents or teachers providing them the information and insights germane to the subject investigated. To write a book for all three audiences in a language that reaches each audience without talking up or down to any is an art in itself. Marty Kutscher not only accomplishes this task extraordinarily well, but he covers a myriad of complex topics with such skill and economy relating in a few pages what would take another author a complete text to cover. The information, insights and pragmatic offerings in this book truly make it essential reading for anyone, parent, teacher or professional. -- Dr Paul D. Schwartz, Professor of Psychology and Director of the Center for Adolescent Research and Development, Mt St Mary College, NY, USAThis all-in-one guide covers the whole range of often co-existing neuro-behavioural disorders in children...Dr Kutscher provides accessible information on causes, symptoms, interactions with other conditions, and treatments... invaluable companion for parents, teachers, professionals, and anyone else who needs fast and to-the-point advice on children with special needs. -- Fragile X Association of Australiait is an excellent book for both trainees and seasoned professionals... There is a good advice (...) on understanding the child's mindset, combined with suggestions for beginning to change their behaviour, attending to problem-solving skills and dealing with angry and frustrated children... All trainings for counselling and psychotherapy with children should include this book on their book list. -- Joanna North, psychotherapist * BACP Children & Young People *In this updated edition, Kutscher (pediatrics, neurology, New York Medical Coll.; Organizing the Disorganized Child), with contributions from Tony Attwood (psychology, Griffith Univ., Queensland, Australia; Asperger's Syndrome) and Robert R. Wolff (pediatrics, neurology, New York Medical Coll.), has provided a thorough guide for parents, teachers, and professionals working with children affected by one or more neurobehaviorial disorders in the mix discussed. Incorporating DSM-5 changes and other new developments, Kutscher's first two chapters focus on general principles of diagnosis and treatment. The author concentrates on the role that parents, teachers, and professionals play, first in recognizing the signs and then in appropriately identifying and treating the syndromes, specifically by being aware of the occurrence of more than one syndrome presenting. While understanding the frustration that parents and teachers often feel when living and working with these children, Kutscher also creates an awareness and empathy for the difficulty children face when dealing with their own symptoms. Chapters about each of the specific syndromes, symptoms, causes, treatments, and how they may appear together follow. VERDICT Awareness of these syndromes and how they interact and affect one another is invaluable to parents, teachers, and physicians. This new edition is important for libraries with developmental disability sections and parenting collections. -- Library Journal, Starred ReviewThis is the 2nd edition of an 'all-in-one guide' to a wide range of often co-existing special educational needs and disabilities. Book SynopsisThis is the second volume in our new "What Buddhism can offer" series which is looking at how Buddhism can help us in our daily lives. It is unique in that it is not about being a good parent but about spiritual growth through parenting. Of course, positive loving parenting is hopefully a consequence of this but this is not the primary focus of the book. As alluded to above, the focus of the book is the parents' spiritual growth and well-being as opposed to being directly child-focused which is something of a new departure. It is easy to connect with based on numerous interviews with personal stories and experiences. It includes extracts and reflections for fathers and also for parents with teenagers as opposed to focusing solely on mothers with very young children, which is often the limitation of similar books. It is practical and experience based. It is broadly relevant across religions and spiritual beliefs - anyone with an interest in spiritual growth could engage and connect with the book.Table of ContentsIntroduction Chapter 1: Love and letting go Chapter 2: Self and other Chapter 3: Getting to know ourselves Chapter 4: Growing through insights Chapter 5: The spiritual practice of ethics Chapter 6: Awake, alive and in touch with life Chapter 7: Growth and maturity Conclusion

Book Synopsis What do you really know about how children learn? How helpful are different types of assessment and what do the results mean? Is homework necessary and how you can you encourage your child at home? Will ability groups and setting help your child achieve more? How do you choose the right school to suit your child? The government and the media have a lot to say about education, but what is the evidence behind these debates? This book walks you through all the most important issues in education, comparing commonly-held beliefs with simple summaries of the evidence, providing you with clear, jargon-free information. It covers topics including school choice, testing and assessment, homework and revision, primary- and secondary-specific topics, stress and mental health, and special needs. Most importantly it ensures you will be able to ask schools the right questions, interact positively with teachers and effectively support your child throughout their education. "Chris & Stuart have written a parent's guide that is jam packed with practical advice, research and informative summaries that any parent can use to support their child to succeed at school. It's organised so you can easily dip in and out when looking for information and guidance, and gives answers to questions that parents may have about their child's education. I recommend this book to all parents & guardians that want to work alongside their child's school to get the best out of their time there." Dawn Cox, Teacher and BloggerTrade Review"Chris & Stuart have written a parent's guide that is jam packed with practical advice, research and informative summaries that any parent can use to support their child to succeed at school. I recommend this book to all parents & guardians that want to work alongside their child's school to get the best out of their time there." -- Dawn Cox * Teacher and Blogger *"Perhaps the most common question I was asked by parents, over my time teaching in secondary schools, was how they might help their son or daughter achieve more and get the most out of their time in school. It was a very difficult question to answer! Learning, assessment, behaviour and how to support pupils with motivation are areas where teachers often struggle to keep up with the evidence, what chance is there for a parent to keep up with that emerging body of evidence and the changes occurring in the school system? For me, this is why Chris Atherton and Stuart Kime’s book represents an essential contribution. It provides parents with a jargon-free introduction to the evidence which is starting to inform many areas teaching and school policy. Indeed, teachers would also benefit from reading it too! Each chapter provides a clear and accessible starting point to understanding the evidence, along with some great pointers for how to engage with teachers on the topics. I not only wish parents had asked me questions based on the ‘what to talk about on parents’ evening’ sections in each chapter – I wish I’d also read this book to help me provide a better answer to the question, ‘how can I help my son/daughter in school?’." -- Nick Rose * Learning Design Fellow, Ambition Institute *Table of Contents Understanding the education debate School choice The learning process Assessment and testing Putting it into action at home - revision, homework and effective independent study 2-10 year-olds: primary and early years education 11–18 year-olds: secondary education and colleges Behaviour, stress and mental health Special needs How to use the knowledge in this book

  • Send Me Into the Woods Alone: Essays on

Invisible Publishing Send Me Into the Woods Alone: Essays on

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisDispatches from modern motherhood by a reluctant suburbanite Send Me Into The Woods Alone is an honest, heartfelt, and often hilarious collection of essays on the joys, struggles, and complexities of motherhood. These essays touch on the major milestones of raising children, from giving birth (and having approximately a million hands in your vagina) and taking your beautiful newborn home (and feeling like you’ve stolen your baby from the hospital), to lying to kids about the Tooth Fairy and mastering the subtle art of beating children at board games. Plus the pitfalls of online culture and the #winemom phenomenon, and the unattainable expectations placed on mothers today. Written from the perspective of an always tired, often anxious, and reluctant suburbanite who is doing her damn best, these essays articulate one woman’s experience in order to help mothers of all kinds process the wildly variable, deeply different ways in which being a mom changes our lives. Reading Pepler’s essays is like hanging out with your best mom-friend—the one who puts it all out there, makes you feel normal and has you laughing so hard you pee a bit."—Kim Shiffman, editor-in-chief, Today's Parent "Easily the most validating book you’ll read this year."—Ann Douglas, author of Happy Parents, Happy Kids and The Mother of All Pregnancy Books Trade Review"Send Me into the Woods Alone isn’t your average essay collection about motherhood. Erin Pepler shares moments of unconditional love and great joy; however, these aren’t what set this book apart. It’s the messiest moments that make this book memorable…Most importantly, Pepler writes about the times when she felt that she failed her children, providing tangible examples that many readers will find comforting and relatable. At fewer than 200 pages, Send Me into the Woods Alone is a quick read with short, digestible chapters. It’s perfect for any busy parent who is looking to steal a few minutes to read by themselves. In fact, as Pepler writes in the book’s eponymous chapter, escaping from parenthood is a privilege that is sometimes essential. “Walk away, but not too far,” she writes. “Love your family hard, but don’t forget to make space to love yourself.”—HerizonsThis is the book I wish I had had as a companion during those early, difficult months and early, difficult years. Because this book is not just instructive and insightful, it is great company. And hilarious" —Marsha Lederman, The Globe and Mail "With her funny and fierce new book, Send Me into the Woods Alone: Essays on Motherhood, Pepler is leading the charge for 100 per cent honest parenting stories."—Briony Smith, Toronto Star "Tremendously moving, but also very funny—I kept reading parts aloud to whoever happened to be in the room with me. Like motherhood itself, Send Me Into The Woods Alone is equal-parts light and dark, joy and misery, [a] writer who’s unafraid to be complicated and tell the truth."—Kerry Clare "Erin Pepler's collection of honest, funny, and relatable essays are infused with hard-won wisdom and insights into the strange, difficult and wonderful world of motherhood. Reading Pepler’s essays is like hanging out with your best mom-friend—the one who puts it all out there, makes you feel normal and has you laughing so hard you pee a bit."—Kim Shiffman, editor-in-chief, Today's Parent "Calling a collection of parenting essays Send Me Into the Woods Alone is a stroke of genius, but Erin Pepler doesn’t spend all of her truth-telling humor on the title. Her witty, warm stories will make you laugh in recognition at the absurd contradictions, frustrations, and complexities of modern motherhood / life in general. With a rare dry humor, Erin gives herself, and her reader, the space to—gasp!—complain about some of the less thrilling parts of parenting, and to acknowledge that it’s always “okay to not feel okay.” She even cheerfully recognizes the sheer boredom that we’d all like to pretend doesn’t exist. (When I read, “Chutes and Ladders is not a game, it’s a curse,” I gave a silent cheer). On the next page, though, you’ll find yourself with a sudden lump in your throat when she deftly captures the mysterious, fierce love that, thankfully, also comes with the territory"—April Daniels Hussar, Managing Editor, Romper "A kind and compassionate book that acknowledges all the emotional heavy lifting that is motherhood. Send Me Into the Woods Alone is the perfect antidote to that guilt-inducing social media post that has you questioning every parenting decision you’ve ever made and/or your decision to become a parent at all. Erin Pepler understands the struggle and she’s there to offer a well-timed message of encouragement, just when you need it most. Easily the most validating book you’ll read this year."—Ann Douglas, author of Happy Parents, Happy Kids and The Mother of All Pregnancy Books "Send Me Into The Woods Alone is one of the most supportive books on parenting I've ever read. It's insightful, heartwarming and oh-so-funny. This is a must-read for mothers."—Shannon Lee Simmons, author of Worry-Free Money "It’s not often you read a book about parenting that is as intimate and honest as Send Me Into The Woods Alone: Essays on Motherhood. Pepler showcases her vulnerability and insight on every page, all salted with humour and relatability. As a parent you will identify with Pepler’s personal journey through motherhood through her 28 essays. You will commiserate with some and be an observer on others. Either way, you will fully enjoy every word knowing that you are not alone. Pepler’s got you!"—Jane Bradley, Publisher of ParentsCanada "Send Me Into the Woods Alone swivels between the funny and the dead-serious, all in an attempt to paint this fulsome picture of early motherhood. … I felt this book was written just for me. In fact, I wish I’d read it earlier when my own kids were much younger. … I really could have used this book at that point in my life."—Anne Logan, CBCTable of ContentsIntroduction: Motherhood has some universal truths, but it’s a wildly variable experience with many different paths to get you there. Also, Penny from Dirty Dancing did not have appendicitis, as I’d assumed. The Miracle of Life and Other Feats of Strength: Growing and birthing a human being is no joke, and it’s not always a good time—but yes, it’s worth it. A Million Hands In One Vagina: A personal essay on letting student doctors into your vagina so they can learn, and being in labour for over 50 hours. When The Baby Snatcher Is You: Walking out of the hospital with a newborn can feel a whole lot like kidnapping an infant, even when you know the infant is yours. Now take that baby home and raise it to adulthood! No pressure. Lullabies From Pop Radio: Pop songs can be perfect lullabies—especially if your kids don’t know any better. Everyone Lies On The Internet: Everyone lies on the Internet, including moms, and it’s making it harder for all of us to feel good about ourselves and our parenting. The Art of Beating Kids at Board Games: Playing with your kids doesn’t have to involve dolls or imaginary play—sometimes, it means crushing them at Monopoly or chess (and then, feeling proud when they start crushing you). Something Terrible is Going To Happen To Your Family: A personal essay on motherhood and anxiety. Interludes in My Driveway: Sometimes, a mom just needs to sit in her car in her own driveway and pause before going on with the rest of her life. The Thing You Love Most Isn’t Always Fun: Being a parent can be really lovely at times. Those times are pretty rare. I Want To Be A Park Dad: A woman imagines what it’s like to be a dad at the park for just one day. My Feral Child, My Love: There’s something wonderful about raising a child who is perfectly, terrifyingly wild at heart. Zombie Rats: A personal essay on catching an injured rat in Tupperware. The Slow and Tragic Death of Santa Claus: Being a parent means being the keeper of magical lies of childhood: Santa Claus, the Easter Bunny, the Tooth Fairy. The Suburban Dream: A city woman moves to the suburbs and falls apart, but eventually finds her way. You’re Not Superwoman And That’s Okay: There are impossible expectations on women in life and in motherhood, and we’re set up to fail. No person can do it all, and that’s okay. Places I Have Failed: Sometimes, you set out to teach your kids about the world and then realize you’ve taught them very little about a lot of important things. Why Mommy Drinks: A personal essay on the demeaning and damaging effect #WineMom culture can have on women. My Job Is Not A Hobby: No matter how hard women work or how much they achieve, they are forever treated as support staff to their husband’s CEO. Sure, I'm A Painter: Trying to get to the bottom of why my son inexplicably thinks I'm a professional painter. Watch Me Hold A Grudge: A man insulted my toddler son in 2015 and I’m still mad. Send Me Into The Woods Alone: Even if you love your family more than anything in the world, the idea of hiding in the cabin in the woods for a few days is extremely tempting. All Tragedy Is Yours: When you’re a parent, you absorb the grief of other parents in an act of empathy. While this can be painful, it also makes us better in a lot of ways. Your Parents Were Never Old: It’s easier to have perspective on your childhood and your own parents when you’re looking back and seeing things more clearly. I Don’t Want To Sleep Through The Night Anymore: Getting the thing you want sometimes means missing what you used to have — even sleepless nights with a young child. Babies Are Going To Smash The Patriarchy: If every generation does things a little differently and a little better than the last, then our kids are going to be the ones to break down walls and smash the patriarchy (or so a mom can hope). Please Don't Grow Up to Be Assholes: As a mother, I have one request of my kids: please, don’t grow up to be assholes.
