Tuttle Publishing A Beginner's Guide to Sumi-e: Learn Japanese Ink
Book SynopsisThis practical guide is perfect for those looking to try this ancient art form for the first time!In this book, Japanese master artist Shozo Koike reveals the simple secrets of Sumi-e, offering step-by-step instructions with clear photographs and online video tutorials showing you how to paint 19 traditional subjects.Sumi-e is the meditative Japanese form of ink painting taught by Zen Buddhist monks to encourage mindfulness and an awareness of our surroundings. It uses only ink, water, a brush and paper to capture natural objects and landscapes in a vivid, spontaneous fashion.Koike begins with the basics—what to buy and how to prepare the ink in a traditional inkstone. Next, he shows you how to practice the 11 basic brushstrokes used for all Sumi-e paintings. The 19 traditional subjects taught in this book include: Flowers like orchids, chrysanthemums, camellias, roses and peonies Plants and fruits including bamboo, eggplants, grapes and chestnuts Animal figures including small birds, butterflies, chicks, crabs and goldfish Koike also explains the philosophy of Sumi-e, which emerges from the use of negative white space to enhance the painted forms. Readers will enter into a world not just of black and white, but of infinite shades of gray which are capable of evoking all the sensations of color using these techniques.Trade Review"The detail given in each project (for example, the orchid project comprises twenty pages!) will, I am sure, allow all readers to achieve what they never thought possible…[a] really excellent book." --Shakkei Journal"The level of depth and detail that can be created in Sumi-e paintings is astonishing, and Koike's book is a master class from a noted expert." -- Starred Review, Library Journal

Search Press Ltd Pure Watercolour Painting: Classic Techniques for
Book SynopsisLearn how to use traditional watercolour techniques to produce beautiful, contemporary paintings that are full of light, colour and life. Packed with inspirational finished paintings and step-by-step projects, this engaging book teaches you how to use watercolours in their purest form, without the addition of any other media, to create art that has a radiancy and luminosity that cannot be achieved in any other way.Trade ReviewMarch 2018 Watercolour is a magical medium when used correctly, adding sparkle and life to your paintings. Here, Peter Cronin, takes you back to basics, learning the traditions of watercolour in its purest form, allowing the radiancy of the medium to shine through. Aimed at artists of all levels, Peter shares his 25 years at teaching experience with us, including step-by-step projects, inspirational paintings and forewords by watercolour experts, David Bellamy and David Curtis. * The Leisure Painter *What a pleasure this book is. The kind that makes you want to pick up your paints and create a painting. This book helps you to master traditional watercolour skills to create watercolours with atmosphere. This course in a book gives tips on painting both indoors and out, painting from photographs, sketching, washes and a lot more. There are 5 step-by-step projects to practise your skills. This 144 page book is longer than many on the subject. It is filled with wonderful examples of watercolour. Wonderful book. * www.Yarnsandfabrics.co.uk *February 2018 This beautiful celebration of the technical and creative capabilities of pure watercolour does the medium ample justice. Peter Cronin examines and demonstrates all the classic techniques - sketching, washes, wet-in-wet and drybrush - as well as the many ways of making mark. More importantly, he does this in a creative context, working towards a successful result rather than conducting exercises for their own sake. This is an inherently hands-on book; there is a strong sense of progression from techniques to outdoor work - something Peter is particularly keen on - and it would not be unreasonable to call this a masterclass, even though it remains thoroughly accessible at heart. Every page simply overflowers with useful information that is presented with admirable clarity. Peter is a master of his medium and it is a real privilege and pleasure to be able to work alongside him. * The Artist *As you might expect, Peter is a member of the Pure Watercolour Society and this is a hymn to the medium.. Forewords by David Curtis and David Bellamy should leave you in no doubt about how good it is. My first question on opening the book was: what is “pure” watercolour and how does it differ from any other kind? Peter helpfully enlightens us: “One may suspect that there is perhaps more to good painting than a huge toolkit, and it may be possible to take simple tools and use them well. This concept and approach to painting are at the heart of pure watercolour”. Put kindly, I take that to mean that simplicity is always best and that you should work with your imagination and media rather than your tools; they’re not what makes a painting, you do. In the wrong hands, this could come across as a fundamentalist rant, but Peter lets his brushes do the talking and the work here is simply extraordinary. If he wasn’t such a good explainer and demonstrator, you could easily be put off by his virtuosity. As it is, follow his advice carefully and you’ll stand a very good chance of finishing this book a much better painter then when you started. Watercolour is, as I think we all know, a very special medium. It’s one that does sometimes seem to have a mind of its own and is nowhere near as controllable as the opaque ones. The skill is to work with that and to learn ways of encouraging it to do what you want rather than trying to wrestle it into submission and merely working against it. Handle a wash sensitively, know when colours are going to bleed and blend and large sections will almost complete themselves. Peter explains much about the properties of watercolour and the techniques you’ll need. He also demonstrates extensively and these paintings will show you how to produce some really quite advanced work. It’s a bit of a tour de force. * Artbookreview.net *

In her most passionate and personal book to date, acclaimed watercolour artist Ann Blockley takes both budding and more experienced artists through a series of ideas for working with nature – in its widest sense – to nurture our creativity, inspire us, make us more sustainable artists, and replenish energy and flow when our artistic streams run dry. In ‘Go Outside and Play’, the author exhorts artists to recapture a fun, no-pressure way of being outside and use that feeling when creating. In ’Connecting Materials to Place’ she creates her own paint from the local pond. In ‘The Slow Movement’, the artist reveals her year of working on a specific local hedgerow and painting a series of different interpretation in its every-changing detail. She created regular creative rituals, using her weekly playing card as a starting point for a new painting to reflect the season each week. She reuses old paintings, and tissue and paper – wabi-sabi style – to create new textures and even new paintings. Including work from other artists as well as her own, she shows the ideas and work from textile and mixed-media artists. From allotment inspiration to reusing old painting and from nature prints to the alchemy of found materials, this is a journey to find new creativity through our connection with our natural world.Trade Review‘[An] impassioned paean to recycled papers, foraged materials and mindful methods’ -- Artists & Illustrators‘A plea to all to stimulate creativity by rejuvenating out awareness of nature … illustrated throughout with Ann’s wonderfully evocative paintings’ -- Leisure Painter'Genuinely fascinating and enlightening’ – Henry Malt' -- The Artist

The Crowood Press Ltd Painting Like the Impressionists
Book SynopsisImpressionism, an art movement pioneered by a handful of avant-garde painters based in Paris in the 1870s, gave academic oil painting a vivacity and spontaneity it had previously lacked, and remains to this day the single most popular style of art for gallery-goers and amateur painters alike. This elegantly-written book, by a professional artist and scholar, is both an instructional guide to incorporating Impressionist techniques into your own painting, and an illuminating investigation into how those first Impressionists actually painted their pictures. As such, it will fascinate both the painter and the art historian. This new book provides detailed advice on paints, brushes and canvas, as used by the original Impressionists and still widely available today. It discusses the process of making an Impressionist painting from initial vision to final completion and analyses the role of composition, light and tone, colour and paint handling. Finally, it gives an overview of the subject matter most closely associated with the Impressionists.Trade ReviewThis is excellent and a worthy successor to Dunstan’s oeuvre. Bruce Yardley examines in considerable detail not just the way the Impressionists worked, but how they looked, saw and interpreted, which is after all the heart of their vision. If you want to have a go at being an Impressionist yourself, Bruce provides plenty of information about original brushes, paints and canvases and explains where they can still be obtained. If you love and want to understand the Impressionists, this is a very thorough guide. -- Henry Malt * artbookreview *This is an excellent guide to working freely and loosely in oils. -- Henry Malt, reviewer The Artist * The Artist *What a treat you have in store with this book: the Impressionists and Bruce Yardley. -- Jane Stroud, Leisure Painter * Leisure Painter *

The artist’s stories are organized by colour and begin with white, traveling through the spectrum to blues, purples, reds, pinks, golds, arriving at varying hues of green. The colours are as extraordinary as the artists themselves: Handmade paper dyed with indigo in Ghana. Rare greens from a fungus-infested plant that grows in the Peruvian jungle. Blues that adorned ancient Briton warriors rediscovered in a Norwich studio. Purples from shellfish collected along the western coast of Mexico. Vivid coral dyes obtained from mushrooms foraged in northern California. New to this paperback edition is a chapter about Heartwear, a collaborative of artists and fashion designers who have created and supported indigo-dyeing projects from Benin to Morocco to India and beyond. Natural pigments aren’t limited to cloth dyeing. They find their way into ceramic tile, glassware, pottery, artists’ paints and pastels, all explored in Recker’s lyrical narrative. Keith Recker is the perfect person to collect and share these timeless stories. His years of global travel, working with artisan groups and individuals as well as connecting them to influential designers in the fashion and interiors industries, put this book right on trend. In this book, she explains that abstract painting wasn’t something she set out to do. Instead, it came as a natural progression of her work. She shares her excitement about abstract painting, its definition, her study of painters known for this technique, and how it’s all enabled her to be open to the limitless possibilities of artistic expression. As do all of her books, this one starts with telling readers the materials they’ll need to begin. The author is honest with her recommendations of material costs and value. Even if you have never picked up a paintbrush, you will be amazed at what you will achieve by the end of this book. And along the way you will have learnt all the skills you need to start painting wonderful snow scenes of your own.Trade ReviewImagine being able to recreate a wintry landscape, using just three colours. There's a helpful chapter on how to transfer your drawing to the watercolour paper and plenty of useful tips and advice to give you the confidence to have a go and develop your own snow scenes. * Leisure Painter - December 2020 *If the idea of using colours for snow – even if it is only three – seems like a contradiction read on. Snow, of course, isn't white but takes on the colour of the things that surround it, especially the sky or shadows of building and vegetation. Grahame's message is simplify – look, visualise and interpret. Don't overcomplicate your mixes or fiddle with details and you'll soon find that less – a lot less – really is more. In this easy-to-follow guide, Grahame will guide you through shadows, reflections, hills, trees, water and even a sunset in nine straightforward projects. * SAA *Search Press have become adept at producing series that include books that stand on their own merits rather than simply fitting into pre-defined slots. Much of that is down to having as simple an idea as possible. As a result authors don’t need to go into contortions to get the correct shape and are free to express themselves as they normally do. This makes the whole idea easy to explain to those same authors so that everyone has a clear idea of what’s required. That, of course, is the key to any successful book, but it’s surprising (and rather alarming) how often it gets missed. If everyone’s pulling in different directions, the dog’s sure not to miss out on its dinner. All of which is a preamble to saying that I like this a lot. Snow is as tricky a subject as water: it’s one of those things that isn’t really there. Water relies on reflection, but snow can be even more difficult. No, it’s not just matter of a large tube of titanium white or areas of paper left intentionally blank. Snow doesn’t reflect exactly, and it has an identifiable form in a way that water doesn’t, but it takes its appearance from the light and shade that fall on it. Cue plenty of opportunities for over-complication and far too many colours in the mix. And, as if by magic – 3 colours and 3 brushes. Less is more, simplification is always going to be your friend. As the nights draw in and who knows what precipitation the weather will bring, here’s a guide that will tell you all you need to know. No, not everything – that would be a tall order in just 9 projects – but enough for you to understand what’s happening on your palette, brushes and paper and you didn’t really need more than that, did you? -- Henry Malt * Artbookreview.net *Table of ContentsIntroduction 6 Using the colours 8 Using the brushes 9 Projects 10 Snowy Field 10 Snowy Hills 16 Snowy Road 20 Streamside Tree 26 Winter Trees 32 Snowy Sunset 38 Snowy Mountains 46 Winter Cottage 52 Vermont Landscape 58 Transferring a drawing 64

Search Press Ltd Drawing Birds
Book SynopsisThis book is an expert guide to producing beautiful lifelike drawings of birds in their natural habitat. Artists of all interests will find a lot to inspire them in this detailed, practical and beautiful guide on drawing birds. The book includes sections on materials, basic techniques and reference gathering, as well as how to draw the key features of birds such as beaks, eyes, claws, wings and feathers. A special section focuses on birds in flight, and this is followed by chapters on the main bird groups including: Waders and water birds, Wildfowl, Birds of prey, Owls, Garden and woodland birds, Seabirds and Game birds. Each chapter covers the techniques specific to the group as well as numerous examples and a full step-by-step demonstration. The absence of colour means that Andrew uses other aspects such as pattern, shading and shape to give his paintings life and interest. Written for artists who wish to apply their skills to drawing birds, as well as experienced artists who want to improve their drawing skills, this is an expert guide to producing exquisitely rendered, lifelike drawings of birds in their natural habitats and nothing could be more inspirational than Andrew’s accurately observed and truly beautiful drawings.Trade ReviewBirds are a perennially popular subject and this eminently readable guide will help you get to grips with many of their complexities. Andrew Forkner also includes some helpful notes on structure and plumage and features such as beaks, feet, and feathers. Concentrating on black and white removes a layer of difficulty at a stroke, and enables those finding their feet to concentrate on shape and structure. While birds are not a subject for the complete beginner, a considerable degree of practice is required and Andrew provides plenty of instruction and exercises that will develop your skills as you work. This is a well-executed and nicely progressive guide that should appeal to the beginner as well as the more experienced worker. -- Henry Malt * The Artist, September 2018 *If you have ever wanted to capture the beauty and grace of birds in pencil, then this book will get you started. Mr. Forkner has also produced a book on painting bird portraits in acrylics, but this time he takes a look at working just with graphite pencils for a monochrome look. You won’t need to purchase much to produce any of the projects in here, just the materials associated with graphite pencil work. A detailed list of these is given, together with tips on what to buy and why you need it. After a very brief look at the history of the bird in art, there is a chapter on getting set up, including how to set up your work area, assembling reference material, transferring layout sketches to drawing paper and more. In order to draw birds and make them look lifelike, it is necessary to understand their anatomy, and there is a useful chapter on bird features with exercises and diagrams. Draw feathers, wings, eyes, beaks and feet and take a look at how birds look in flight. The project part of the book is divided into bird groups, each of which shows some drawings of relevant birds with drawing tips and a project. This is shown in captioned stages, not photographs but actual drawings, showing how the picture is built up. Each project comes with a traceable outline, so you can get started on the details without worrying about getting the sketch right. Choose from a moorhen, Canada geese, puffin, lanner falcon, snowy owl, goldfinch and partridge. Even a drawing beginner will be able to get plenty out of this book, with its clear, well worded instructions and clear diagrams. This primer is worth obtaining for anybody of any level who wants to draw birds. -- Rachel Hyde * myshelf.com *Summer 2018 Aimed at artists with some experience, Andrew Forkner's Drawing Birds is a through and detailed guid. Practical information on materials, basic techniques and gathering reference material is followed by sections on how to draw the key features of birds - beaks, claws, feathers and eyes. The birds are divided into groups and include: waders and waterbirds, wildfowl, birds of prey, owls, garden and woodland birds, seabirds and game birds, and there's a special section on birds in flight. Full step-by-step demonstrations are included. * Leisure Painter *Where Andrew’s previous book dealt with acrylics and included colour, this concentrates on drawing and monochrome. Birds are never an easy subject and simply observing them can be a challenge. Although Andrew does not cover the use of photographs in detail, he does hint at their possibilities and also has some useful notes on sketching in the field. The assumption is, I think, that you’ll find your own reference material, of which there is plenty available. The book begins with some handy notes on structure and plumage along with features such as eyes, beaks and bills. This section is worthy of considerable attention as it introduces basic techniques and helps you work towards the complete studies that come later. These demonstrations cover a good variety of species from garden birds to waterfowl, birds of prey and game birds. Andrew shows you how to map out the outline and structure and then fill in the shading so that your finished result has both shape and solidity. Although birds are not a subject for the complete beginner, neither is this a masterclass that need deter those who are new to the subject and it should satisfy them as well as those who want to take the art considerably further. * Artbookreview.net *Table of ContentsIntroduction 6 The history of drawing birds 8 Materials 12 How to start 18 BIRD FEATURES 24 Wings 24 Feathers 26 Eyes 28 Beaks and bills 30 Feet 32 BIRDS IN FLIGHT 34 Bird groups 40 Waders and waterbirds 42 Common moorhen step by step 44 Wildfowl 50 Canada geese step by step 52 Seabirds 58 Atlantic puffin step by step 60 Birds of prey 64 Lanner falcon step by step 66 Owls 72 Snowy owl step by step 74 Garden and woodland birds 80 European goldfinch step by step 82 Game birds 88 Red-legged partridge step jby step 90 Index 96

Fordham University Press The Pleasure in Drawing
Book SynopsisOriginally written for an exhibition Nancy curated at the Museum of Fine Arts in Lyon in 2007, the text addresses the medium of drawing in light of form in its formation, of form as a formative force, opening drawing to questions of pleasure and desire.Trade Review"What is it about drawing that might attract a philosopher's eye? Many things no doubt but not least, there is the (literally) unthinkable movement by which something begins to take shape. Jean-Luc Nancy's approach in The Pleasure in Drawing moves beyond art-historical categories and conceptual schemas to touch on precisely that: he considers the 'formative force' of drawing, not in terms of its formal achievement but in terms of the pleasures afforded by its constant beginning-pleasures of attraction, sense, permanent interruption, tension and intensity.
