  • Inside Japanese Ceramics

    Shambhala Inside Japanese Ceramics

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThis practical and supremely useful manual is the first comprehensive, hands-on introduction to Japanese ceramics. The Japanese ceramics tradition is without compare in its technical and stylistic diversity, its expressive content, and the level of appreciation it enjoys, both in Japan and around the world. Inside Japanese Ceramics focuses on tools, materials, and procedures, and how all of these have influenced the way traditional Japanese ceramics look and feel. A true primer, it concentrates on the basics: setting up a workshop, pot-forming techniques, decoration, glazes, and kilns and firing. It introduces the major methods and styles that are taught in most Japanese workshops, including several representative and well-known wares: Bizen, Mino, Karatsu, Hagi, and Kyoto. While presenting the time-tested techniques of the tradition, author Richard L. Wilson also accommodates modern technologies and materials as appropriate. Wilson has gathered a wealth of information on two fronts—as a researcher of Japanese pottery and art history, and as a potter who has studied and worked for years with master Japanese potters. In his introduction, he provides a short history of Japanese ceramics, and in closing he looks beyond traditional methods toward ways in which Western potters can make Japanese methods their own. Richly illustrated with 24 color plates, over 100 black-and-white photographs, and over 70 instructive line-drawings, Inside Japanese Ceramics is indispensable for potters as well as connoisseurs and collectors of Japanese ceramics. Above all, it is an invitation to participate—to study, make, touch, and use the exquisite products of the Japanese ceramic tradition.

    2 in stock

Book SynopsisAnimals are a perennial favourite amongst artists, but many struggle with capturing their form and character in a way that reflects the true spirit of the animal. In this bright, breezy and accessible book, Jo Allsopp’s genuine passion for wildlife is clear. That love is reflected in her art, and her loose, lively and dynamic style is one that many wish to emulate. Including a broad range of animals from around the world – everything from red squirrels to peacocks, lions and housecats – this book will inspire and instruct beginner artists, appeal to animal-loving hobby artists, and provide new ideas for more advanced artists who wish to loosen up their style and take a more experimental approach to their watercolour painting. It includes: A section exploring inspiration and motivation Short practical exercises to help you loosen up and try things out A close look at Jo's way of painting, which demystifies the process and includes drawing techniques 3 pure watercolour projects and 9 incorporating mixed media Fully illustrated projects that are explained step-by-step, showing you how to personalise your pictures. Jo's technique is very wet into wet, with lots of blooms, vivid colours, and striking contrasts and texture achieved by the addition of wax resist, salt, spatter and scratching out. Jo uses an exciting range of art media and techniques in her work. The main medium is watercolour, but to this she adds ink, water-soluble and permanent pens; bleach; isopropyl alcohol; bronzing powders; metallic leaf and acrylic inks. All are explored and explained to show the effects that can be achieved and when and how to use them.Trade ReviewJo's style of painting is completely unique and throughout the book she shares her experience and enthusiasm for the subject. I completely lost myself in the pages, learnt loads and if you know Jo then you can hear her voice coming through the text to help you with your next animal project. You are going to love Jo's approach and the way she puts paint to paper, it's very refreshing and does exactly what it says on the cover. -- Alison C. Board, Author of 'A Beginner's Guide to Watercolour'Artist and tutor, Jo Allsopp is passionate about painting wildlife. In her loose and contemporary style, she shows beginners how to tackle the often difficult job of capturing animals in paint using innovative and dynamic techniques. A section on exploring inspiration and motivation is followed by short, practical exercises to help you loosen up. Close-ups of Jo's painting techniques, with a specific emphasis on drawing, will encourage you to have a go yourself. There are three pure watercolour projects and nine projects incorporating mixed media -- each of them provides well illustrated step-by-step examples to help you develop your own style. -- The Leisure Painter * Issue 646 *The projects are fantastic and jam packed with techniques and underlying principles of painting. Starting with pure watercolour, Jo introduces new concepts and extra mediums in an extremely friendly and accessible way. As a fairly “traditional” watercolour painter myself, I felt inspired to push my comfort zones by introducing other mediums. Jo’s practical advice on how to do this made it feel fun and achievable, immediately giving me much more confidence to try something new! What really made the book sing out to me were all the extra insights: injecting life into black and white animals, learning how to rescue overworking, and what to do with so called “failed” paintings. It’s these extra morsels of info that can really help take our painting to the next level. Ultimately this book will leave you excited and inspired to paint and get creative. What more could we ask for than that!? -- Tom Shepherd, Watercolour ArtistThis is a beautiful book full of stunning paintings by Jo Allsopp the author. It is perfect for anyone looking to learn and develop their skills in watercolour, inks and mixed media painting. The book is called ‘Loose & Lively’ because it encourages the learner to express a freedom in their drawing and painting. This book is brilliant as it talks you through, step-by-step, about what equipment is needed and shows an overview in stages of how to achieve such pictures. I would highly recommend this beautiful book and give it a five star rating. -- Jackie Fisher * Customer Review *I am thoroughly enjoying my journey with this book and the author. Her techniques are simple but so effective. My aim has always been to “loosen my style” and these instructions are allowing me to feel more comfortable in my ability to do this. Book SynopsisIf you have always wanted to learn to draw but lack the confidence to start, Drawing for the Absolute Beginner is the book for you. The author, Carole Massey, is an accomplished artist with many years' experience of teaching and demonstrating, and even the most hesitant of beginners will soon pick up the skills and techniques needed to start drawing. The book is a complete drawing course, designed to help you progress from simple techniques such as lines, circles, squares and ellipses through to capturing landscapes, figures and buildings. There are numerous simple step-by-step demonstrations as well as larger projects, and outline tracings are provided of the more complex drawings that you can transfer straight onto your paper, if you wish to use them. Most of the artworks in the book are created using pencil, but the author also uses ink, ballpoint pen, pastel pencil and watersoluble pencils to encourage you to experiment with other media too. By the end of the book, you will have learnt all you need to know to take your drawing skills further and become an accomplished artist in your own right.Trade ReviewCarole explains and demonstrates composition, perspective, positioning, and negative shapes as well as the many techniques of mark making. The heart of the book is a series of 16 pre-printed outlines that contain only the basic shapes, leaving you to work on the details - shading, hatching, backgrounds and colour. -- The SAA * The SAA Catalogue 19/20 *This is quite the best introduction to drawing I’ve seen. Carole has a simple, unfussy style and she’s also very good at simplification – reducing subjects to their essence, avoiding unnecessary detail, working loosely and explaining simple shapes and their relationships. There’s plenty to get your teeth into, from basic techniques to outlines, hatching, shading and the use of colour. Subjects range from landscapes, trees and water to figures and animals (both static and moving) and buildings. Like the rest of the series, this is well thought-through and will take you from first steps and on to some really quite advanced work * Artbookreview.net *Jan/Feb 2018 This book is an absolute delight, covering so many aspects of drawing that anyone looking to start drawing and even experienced artists will find inspiration here. We love the very helpful step-by-step approach, the contents include: introduction, first steps, tone, shading, ways of seeing, sketching, landscapes, composition, figures, animals and movement, buildings and perspective. Outline tracings are provided of the more complex drawings that you can transfer straight onto your paper, if you wish to use them. As the days start getting long this inspiring bok is all the encouragement you need to start creating your own pieces of art! Highly recommended! * Hot Brands, Cool Places *Part of Search Press' series of books for beginners, Drawing for the Absolute Beginner by Carole Massey is aimed at anyone who lacks the confidence to get started. Eminently practical, with plenty of step-by-step demonstrations and projects, Carole takes you by the hand and shows you the way forward. The book is designed to progress the student from very simple drawing exercises, such as drawing circles and ellipses, through to more complex subjects until you will find yourself tackling landscapes, figures and buildings. Outline tracings are provided of the more complex drawings so that you don't become overwhelmed with the details and can enjoy the experience. * The Leisure Painter *Anybody can learn to draw; it is all a matter of looking at the world in the right way and putting it down on paper. This book contains a basic course on how to do this from scratch through a series of step-by-step lessons. It could be argued that the only real “absolute beginner” when it comes to drawing is a very young child; this book is aimed at the adult who says that they cannot draw. The course starts with making simple marks and drawing basic shapes, breaking objects down into shapes and progressing to tone, shading and shadow. Pencils, pens, charcoal and various types of colored pencils are the media used and most aspects of drawing are covered including composition, perspective, textures, scale etc. A wide variety of different subjects are covered too from still life through to landscapes, figures, animals, buildings and more. The idea is that you progress through various short tasks and some longer projects to build up skills. These are in classic Search Press staged captioned photographs showing how the drawing builds up. The book also contains many examples of the artist’s work with captions explaining how a certain effect has been achieved as well as a useful index. Anybody who wants to draw can learn a lot from this primer. * myshelf.com *Drawing is something I have always previously been scared of. I can't picture things in my head so I think this hinders me slightly. However I have decided to combat my fear and to start learning. It's amazing coming back to drawing as an adult. I thought this book would be a fantastic place to start. It takes you through each step so that you can see how to easily break things down and replicate it. Carole takes you through such small and easy steps that you don't realise how quickly you are changing the way you draw and making it so much easier. Throughout the book there are clear instructions and clear pictures to help you achieve everything. I am finding that the more I practice each step the easier I find the next step in the process. Carole breaks everything down into small steps so that you can easily progress. It takes each part of drawing and breaks it down so that it is easy to understand. The book is designed for using pencils but I used the same principles to draw on my tablet and it worked really well. You start the book off with the basics. With everything from choosing your pencils, sharpening your pencil to how best to hold your pencil. You are taken through step by step on how to draw different types of lines, shapes etc. Then it's onto how to shade etc. You will not believe how quickly you are drawing different items. I did struggle at times to exactly replicate some of the pictures. However I do feel that as I progress through the book this will become easier. If you are wanting to learn all the different basics of drawing then this book is really worth it. * Crochet Addict UK *Table of ContentsIntroduction  First steps  Tone  Shading  Ways of seeing  Sketching  Landscapes  Composition  Figures, animals and movement Buildings and perspective  Using the outlines Index
