FUEL Publishing Russian Criminal Tattoo Archive
Book SynopsisThe Russian Criminal Tattoo Archive presents highlights from FUEL’s singular collection of authentic material on this subject. Previously unpublished in its original form, this work comprises ink on paper drawings by Danzig Baldaev, the photographic albums of Arkady Bronnikov and prisoner portraits by Sergei Vasiliev. The selection is contextualised with insights from Mark Vincent PhD (author and academic specialising in the Soviet Gulag) and Alison Nordström (photography scholar, writer and curator). The meticulous depictions of tattoos by prison guard Danzig Baldaev are reproduced in facsimile, authenticated by his signature and stamp, alongside his handwritten notes on the reverse. The paper has yellowed with age, giving the exquisite drawings a visceral temporality – almost like skin. Sergei Vasiliev’s photographs portray inmates in startling intimacy. He achieves a remarkable level of trust within the closed criminal society, a strict hierarchy, where outsiders are viewed with hostile suspicion. Arkady Bronnikov’s collection of photographs are shown in the albums in which they were collected. Used exclusively to aid police in their investigations, they depict a motley line-up of assorted body parts. This unique book is the only publication of primary material on this subject, highlighting the pioneering methods of these three individuals used to document this unique phenomenon.Table of ContentsSkin, Ink, Photographs, Archives Essay by Alison Nordström Photographs by Sergei Vasilev The Russian Criminal Tattoo Archive: Danzig Baldaev Essay by Mark Vincent Drawings: sheets and posters by Danzig Baldaev with texts by Mark Vincent Albums and photographs from the Arkady Bronnikov collection

University of California Press Skin
Book SynopsisOur intimate connection with the world, skin protects us while advertising our health, our identity, and our individuality. This title celebrates the evolution of three unique attributes of human skin: its naked sweatiness, its distinctive sepia rainbow of colors, and its remarkable range of decorations.Trade Review“ Skin offers an accessible and well-referenced overview of many aspects of the biology of human skin. . . . Beauty may only be skin deep, but Jablonski shows us that the skin, be it thin or thick, is the true mirror of the soul.” * Science *“Biology is a historical science. Ask a 'why?' question about biology, as Nina Jablonski keeps doing in her book Skin, and you invite an evolutionary answer. She also tells us everything we might want to know about skin; perhaps more than some people want to know.” * Nature *“Jablonski has an endearing sense of humor that keeps the narrative nimble as it delivers surprisingly dense lessons on anatomy, biochemistry, physiology and sociology. . . . A fascinating read.” * San Francisco Chronicle *“Skin is the largest and most visible organ in the human body. Its biological richness and complexity are exceeded only by the brain and immune system. And now at last it has the book it deserves. . . . [Jablonski’s] fascinating book is as all-encompassing as skin itself. . . . a fascinating, thought-provoking book.” * Financial Times *"Skin is, as Jablonsky ably illustrates, a marvel of engineering: tough, stretchable, impermeable, pliable, a bacterial and UV shield and sensitive to heat, cold, deformation and the slightest of touches. The book explores the social nooks and biological crannies of this complex set of tissues, from color to artificial skin and the role of sweat in our evolutionary history." * New Scientist *“A rich mix of just about everything you would want to know about the necessary and complex covering of your body. Nina Jablonski writes not only as an anthropologist but also as an ethologist, comparative biologist, and psychologist. She weaves a vivid, compelling history, which at times is intertwined with social discourse (skin color and racism) and advice (skin and sun protection).” * New England Journal of Medicine *"This amply illustrated rhapsody to the body's largest and most visible organ showcases skin's versatility, importance in human biology and uniqueness: human skin is hairless and sweaty, has evolved in a spectrum of colors and is a billboard for self-expression. . . . Jablonski nimbly interprets scientific data for a lay audience, and her geeky love for her discipline is often infectious" * Publishers Weekly *“In Skin, her fascinating, nuanced, often exhilarating, and for the most part crisply written new book, Nina Jablonski . . . urges us to consider our skin as we have never, even in our pubertal angst, pored over it before. . . . May you read it with pleasure and by the sweat of your brow.” * American Scholar *STARRED REVIEW: "A marvelous exploration of the organ we ignore until an abnormality prompts us to seek professional help. The chapters skillfully lead from one topic to the next and cover the history and physiology of skin, sweating, color, touch, tattoos and painting, and more. Jablonski's writing is clear; her enthusiasm for the topic, evident.” * Library Journal *“Jablonski engages the reader with her clear, informed style that makes Skin a very readable book.” * American Biology Teacher *"Anthropologist Jablonski delves into the natural history of skin in animals and people and explains its structure and function, its evolution as a nearly hairless body covering in people, and the utility of its pigment melanin. She also examines the role of skin in activities as varied as finding food and bonding socially. Finally, she looks at the prospects for artificial skin." * Science News *Table of ContentsList of Illustrations Acknowledgments Preface to the 2013 Edition Introduction 1 Skin Laid Bare 2 History 3 Sweat 4 Skin and Sun 5 Skin's Dark Secret 6 Color 7 Touch 8 Emotions, Sex, and Skin 9 Wear and Tear 10 Statements 11 Future Skin Glossary Notes References Index

Bodleian Library Why North is Up: Map Conventions and Where They
Book SynopsisMany people have a love of maps. But what lies behind the process of map-making? How have cartographers through the centuries developed their craft and established a language of maps which helps them to better represent our world and users to understand it? This book tells the story of how widely accepted mapping conventions originated and evolved – from map orientation, projections, typography and scale, to the use of colour, map symbols, ways of representing relief and the treatment of boundaries and place names. It charts the fascinating story of how conventions have changed in response to new technologies and ever-changing mapping requirements, how symbols can be a matter of life or death, why universal acceptance of conventions can be difficult to achieve and how new mapping conventions are developing to meet the needs of modern cartography. Here is an accessible and enlightening guide to the sometimes hidden techniques of map-making through the centuries.Trade Review‘Elegantly written and beautifully illustrated, Why North is Up tells you everything you need to know about the signs, symbols and science behind map-making. For map addicts and casual bystanders alike, this is a terrific work that both entertains and enlightens.’ -- Mike Parker'The book is ideal for the satnav generation, showing how cartographic language has evolved from Ptolemy's Geographia to crowd-sourced online OpenStreetMap. But this is far from just an introduction for newcomers; most readers are sure to discover something new here...the book is copiously illustrated with relevant map extracts, faithfully reproduced; many are from the Bodleian Library, other from a variety of other sources.' * Sheetlines *'Ashworth presents an entertaining foray into the history, structure and evolution of maps and mapmaking. Sarabande Books, Incorporated Hotel Almighty
Book SynopsisVisually arresting and utterly one-of-a-kind, Sarah J. Sloat's Hotel Almighty is a book-length erasure of pages from Misery by Stephen King, a reimagining of the novel's themes of constraint and possibility in elliptical, enigmatic poems. Here, "joy would crawl over broken glass, if that was the way." Here, sleep is a "circle whose diameter might be small," a circle "pitifully small," a "wrecked and empty hypothetical circle." Paired with Sloat's stunning mixed-media collage, each poem is a miniature canvas, a brief associative profile of the psyche—its foibles, obsessions, and delights.Trade ReviewAIGA 50 Books 50 Covers of 2020 The New York Times Book Review, “New & Noteworthy Poetry, from the Ancient Greeks to Billy Collins” Library Journal, "Versifying / Collection Development: Poetry" Academy of American Poets, “2020 Featured Fall Books” "Kenyon Review’s 2020 Holiday Reading Recommendations" Electric Literature, "9 Graphic Poetry Collections that Reimagine Text and Image" Neon Pajamas, "Favorite Authors (and Their Books) That I Read in 2020" Hypoallergic, “Typographic Eye Candy”: 50 Standout Book Covers From 2020 “Absolutely marvelous.” —Mary Ruefle "This book of erasure poems uses Stephen King’s “Misery” as its source text, highlighting themes of captivity and imagination. Sloat reproduces the original pages she used, adorned with fanciful collages on the erased sections." —”New and Noteworthy Poetry, from the Ancient Greeks to Billy Collins,” The New York Times Book Review "Sarah J. Sloat’s debut poetry collection, Hotel Almighty, is a visual feast. This assemblage of erasure poems and full-color collages is a fantastical, Rubik’s Cube of a delight." —Kelly Fordon, New York Journal of Books "Sloat’s brilliant erasures. . . are visual delights that transcend confinement." —"Kenyon Review’s 2020 Holiday Reading Recommendations," Kenyon Review "Sarah J. Sloat’s Hotel Almighty (Sarabande, Sept.) goes all out with erasure and mixed-media collage to reimagine Stephen King’s Misery." —"Versifying / Collection Development: Poetry" by Barbara Hoffert, Library Journal "Hotel Almighty is a collection full of possibility and surprise. Of yes, misery and confinement, but also of playfulness and hope. It’s worth noting how unusual and thrilling it is to encounter a book of poems infused with so much color. The sophistication of the erasure pairs with the illustrative nature of collage to create a distinct mood, at times, like a subversive picture book for the Future Adult version of the kid drawing in the back of the room, who is too smart or dark or witty for the rest of the class." —"Misery Loves Company: A Conversation with Sarah J. Sloat" by J.M. Farkas, The Rumpus "More in the spirit of play than protest, S. Jane Sloat creates poetry from prose, reconstituting the words and world of Stephen King’s Misery. Sloat finds dreamy delight in King’s suspenseful tale: ‘In an act of imagination/late at night./He threw back his head and/a variety of strange and poisonous flowers grew.’ These lines feel like they speak to the creative process in general and to this book in particular. Each page is a poem revealed through erasure, strange word-flowers growing up from crayons, collage fragments, and loose threads that suggest a feminine hand." —Electric Literature, "9 Graphic Poetry Collections that Reimagine Text and Image" "Sarah J. Sloat's visual spectacles feel like unique and refreshing dreamscapes. Where a table or desk transforms into a craft bonanza of vivid lines, vintage clippings, yarn, scissors, wallpaper, string. Hotel Almighty offers all of those things. Bring me erasure. Bring me poetry. Bring me analog collage. Bring me Misery on every damn page." —"Favorite Authors (and Their Books) That I Read in 2020," Neon Pajamas "Hotel Almighty will make your brain spin until the last page, weaving colorful paper cut-outs, vibrant dots, and gold threads with word-jewels excavated from Misery, bewildering you with a new sense of what poetry is capable of." —Rhino "At a time when many contemporary poets experiment with and teach erasure as a poetic technique, Sloat's collection showcases the many potentials of the form. Sloat's visual compositions occur on three or four levels at once, as she aligns the forms of the source text, the verbal text, the collage, and the collection. I believe this multi-level resonance sets new parameters for poetry. With her flexibility with syntax and fluid subjects, Sloat forges new insights that call us to question the way we relate to what confines us, and to re-set the limits of a poem. I've loved reading and re-reading Hotel Almighty. I find something new each time I open the book, and I continue to learn from the box of many boxes Sloat presents here." —Diagram, online "[Misery] explores the mode and function of artistic creation as it relates to life itself, the ways confinement and suffering can become means to radical opening. Sloat’s Hotel Almighty internalizes all of this, both commenting and building on King’s explorations in both the form and lyricism of her erasures." —Dream Pop Journal, online "Sloat’s work here belongs within the offbeat orthodoxy of found poetry; the popular label 'blackout poetry' certainly applies to her method of scratching out, painting over or otherwise obscuring printed text, thereby bringing novel messages to the surface. And yet these terms, which live in negative language, don’t fully capture Sloat’s sublime, unsettling outcomes. She coaxes Technicolor poetry from preexisting pages; new verse isn’t merely found—as in stumbled upon—but unearthed." —The Curator "[A]n innovative, compelling work of visual lyric." —Women’s Voices for Change, online "Hotel Almighty is a profound work of reinvention — from King’s pop fiction to a hybrid work where houses grow wild with flowers, where one asks hell to “subside a little” (42), and where the reader enjoys every minute of the bizarre, vivid, delightful journey." —The Indianapolis Review "This is the technical and dramatic pinnacle of erasure poetry." —Naoko Fujimoto Poetry & Graphic Poetry “Sarah J. Sloat’s erasure-collages create intimate and intricate pairings that ricochet back and forth between text and image. In one, a picture of a giant hand tenderly touching a tiny telephone speaks to the page’s mournful question, ‘If I could be / A dim shape slumped over / and round / Would that be so bad?’ In another, the erased text (‘The sound of the wind filled the phone / squeezing into the line / like a nerve awake at night’) is translated into red stitches approaching, then encircling a tree. Hotel Almighty is a marvel.” —Matthea Harvey

Book SynopsisTrade Review"Written with careful precision and breadth. . . chronicling a rich, 100-year history of handmade moviemaking in which artists similarly trespass into other areas of creative practice." * Los Angeles Review of Books *"Gregory Zinman’s excellent new book on movies made (or remade) through the direct, often tactile engagement of artists and their filmstrips, video-feedback loops, and myriad other animated oozes and vibrant viscosities, Making Images Move: Handmade Cinema and the Other Arts is everything one wants in this age of over-scribbling at the margins of cinema. Lucid, smart, but entirely readable, and compellingly illuminated with color illustrations of the wonders it describes." * Cinema Scope Magazine *"Devoid of zeitgeisty romanticizations of the analog, Gregory Zinman's Making Images Move presents a defiant yet clear-eyed alternative history of the origins of cinema. . . . Zinman's prose sparkles in recounting artists' use of chemicals, bodily fluids, and elements like wind and water, which often render celluloid fragile or ephemeral." * Film Comment *"Zinman’s is the book perched on our balconies. It is worth way more than two in the bush. That’s the great thing about books that are also birds. Their singleness multiplies in hands that hold them. Running fingers through their feathered figures to thread additional ones in responds to their song." * Critical Inquiry *"Zinman explores the history of camera-less filmmaking in an exciting intervention that ennobles an underdiscussed mode of film production and challenges our very conception of what constitutes a 'movie.' . . . A groundbreaking immersion into a previously uncelebrated filmmaking practice." * Historical Journal of Film, Radio and Television *"Rather than manifesting a site of contestation between painting, film, sculpture, or photography, Making Images Move espouses the handmade's medium-collaborative impulse through material investigations of light in time. . . . Though Zinman situates the return to craft as a response to mass digitization, the current pandemic transfigures Zinman's politics of handmade joy into something almost elegiac, as even the possibility of direct artistic experience remains untenable." * Millennium Film Journal *Table of ContentsList of Illustrations Acknowledgments Introduction A Shadow History of the Moving Image PART I. Edition Reuss Kalinga Tattoo: Ancient & Modern Expressions of
Book SynopsisText in English & German. This is a photographic masterpiece that explores the vanishing art of Kalinga tribal tattooing in the remote mountains of the northern Philippines. Combining the visionary talents of numerous international photographers and the words and stories of nearly fifty Kalinga elders, Kalinga Tattoo is the first book to tell the story of this incredibly rich tradition of indigenous body art that is believed to be 1,000 years old. Here''s a rare trove of tattoo motifs, variations and interpretations which can reveal new perspectives for every interested tattooist. The journey begins with tattoo anthropologist Dr Lars Krutak''s first encounter with the last Kalinga tattoo artist, the 91-year-old Whang-Od, and is followed by the moving poetry and song of tattooed Kalinga author and elder Natividad Sugguiyao. Sugguiyao''s narratives provide an insider''s perspective regarding the history and significance of Kalinga batok (tattoo), and they establish new ways of reading the messages encoded in this ancient art form of the skin. Krutak continues with an historical exploration entitled History of Kalinga Tattoo Art that focuses on those cultural institutions that were deeply intertwined with Kalinga tattooing itself. Dramatic images of tattooed men and women taken over the last 100 years and colourful village scenes and landscapes accentuate the chapter. Lars'' detailed study into the significance of Kalinga tattooing proceeds with an illustrated discussion of the artistic motifs that comprise Kalinga tattoo art. This chapter, Kalinga Tattooing Motifs is an absolute must read for anyone seeking knowledge (spiritual or otherwise) of the real roots of tribal tattooing practices that are largely disappearing around the world today. Because warrior culture, headhunting, and religious ritual permeated nearly every facet of Kalinga tattooing practice, Warrior Culture of the Kalinga focuses on these customs. Krutak recounts his experiences with Kalinga warriors (old and new) and breathes life into long-forgotten Kalinga literature revolving around human sacrifice and other ceremonies associated with the human hunt. The nature of the research is outstanding and wonderfully detailed, and the words (and actions) of his Kalinga informants are truly unforgettable. What follows these texts is a remarkably beautiful photographic exhibition of the last generation of Kalinga warriors in vivid colour who earned their tattoos on the field of battle. The Last Kalinga Tattoo Artist looks at the life and work of Whang-Od, the last Kalinga mambabatok or tattooist, who dedicated her life to the art of her ancestors. Krutak, who lived with the master artisan for nearly two weeks, exposes for the first time in history the biography of this unique woman who for over seventy years has plied the skins of countless generations of Kalinga men and women with thorns and other natural tools. Finally, Mark of the Four Waves Tribe documents the artistic achievements of a growing number of young Filipino-Americans who since 1998 have each made a conscious individual effort to revive the indigenous tattooing traditions of the Kalinga and other tribal peoples of the Philippines. Whether through hand-tapping, hand-poking, or machined work, the Tribe''s dedication to The Movement has resulted in the revitalisation of timeworn tribal designs with new design concepts that are beginning to approach the longstanding accomplishments of Polynesian artists who guided the tattoo renaissance across the Pacific in the early 1980s. For Krutak and Sugguiyao, the Tribe represents the very best of contemporary tribal tattoo culture because they dynamically express the enduring strength of time-tested indelible traditions that firmly anchor indigenous and modern concepts of identity on the skin for all to see.

Rizzoli International Publications André Saraiva
Book SynopsisThe first and much-anticipated book by visual artist, club creator, and nightlife impresario Andre Saraiva presents his wide range of works, from street art and contemporary art to graphic design, photography, and his influences on fashion and nightlife.Trade Review"If there was ever a stylish man and innovator in the European graffiti scene, André is the epicenter. With Paris as the canvas, his eponymous character of a smiling stick figure with top hat and his forays into nightclubs and the fashion world, make him an icon beyond the street works. What he demonstrated was that this culture could not only be fun but a viable path to the broader impact of how we experience a city...When we think of trailblazers, he is one of the key figures, resulting in his monograph, André Saraiva: A Graffiti Life, out now via Rizzoli, as a seminal document of graffiti’s international growth over the last 50 years...And the book itself is an absolute thrill. Pop-ups, graphically exciting and bold, capture what is often lost when street artists are memorialized in monographic form. This is about fun, it’s about the thrill of creation and the endless possibilities that come when outsider culture joins the mainstream. If this art form is about shattering expectations, this book is the ideal companion. In over 320 pages, you will understand more about André and experience the beauty of good book design and the power of paper as a publishing medium. How perfect that it's associated with an artist who brought a little bit of humor and fun to the streets." —JUXTAPOZ MAGAZINE"André Saraiva has worn many hats: club owner, hotelier, entrepreneur, graffiti artist. His inaugural book is a retrospect of his career as the latter. The 320-page tome includes photographs of his graffiti (including his alter ego Mr. A) on the streets of Paris, New York, and London; collaborations with high-end designers like Chanel and Louis Vuitton; and even “diplomas” (a.k.a. tickets) he’s received from various authorities. Contributions include words by the late Virgil Abloh, Jeffrey Deitch, and others." —NEW YORK MAGAZINE"Clad in a top hat with a noodle-like figure and grimacing face is the ubiquitous Mr. A character that can be seen on the facade of historic buildings in Paris or on the streets of New York City’s Chinatown neighborhood. From dream concert posters to sprawling murals, the character lives on any medium that its creator wishes for the public to view." —HYPEBEAST.COM"In 1986, when André Saraiva was 15 years old, the Swedish-French rascal started tagging “Mr. A” around the streets of Paris. His graffiti quickly turned from a hobby into a job. Within a few years, Saraiva started winning awards for his art and getting commissions from stores and museums around the world. Luxury brands like Louis Vuitton, Chanel, and Tiffany & Co. took note, tapping Saraiva to put a modern twist on silk shawls and quilted handbags. His first monograph, A Graffiti Life, comes courtesy of Rizzoli. Including essays by Virgil Abloh and Jeffrey Deitch, the 320-page book covers both Mr. A’s graffiti and Saraiva’s nightlife career (he’s opened bars and clubs in New York, Paris, Tokyo, and London)." —AIRMAIL.COM"André Saraiva, a Swedish-French artist known for his work in graffiti, showcases some of his best works in this book inspired by fashion and nightlife. You'll find everything from street art to graphic design to photography in its 320 pages." —WOMAN'S DAY"The Swedish-French graffiti artist and hotelier André Saraiva found his stride looking to the future while running away from convention (and the police). Now, the mind behind the street art moniker Mr. A—which he has painted, per his estimate, 20 times a night for the last 30 years—is taking a stab at nostalgia in a new retrospective book with Rizzoli, André Saraiva: Graffiti Life, an ode to his greatest exhibitions, collaborations, and risks taken." —CULTURED MAGAZINE

Watson-Guptill Publications Collage Techniques
Book SynopsisOne of many exhilarating artistic developments that took place during the early twentieth century, the fine art medium of collage emerged from the cubist gluing and pasting explorations of Georges Braque and Pablo Picasso. As a result of its experimental genesis, collage has continued to serve not only as a primary form of expression for many prominent artists, but as a principal means of evaluating and developing new creative strategies. Conceived and written by renowned artist, author, and teacher Gerald Brommer, Collage Techniques first presents the medium within the context of a wide variety of materials, including washi (oriental and rice papers) and watermedia; stained, prepared, and found papers; photographs; and fabrics and fibers. Each category of material is examined through a step-by-step demonstration and works by artists who approach collage in original and refreshing ways. The latest trends in technologically enhanced collage, including such high-tech applications as multiple photocopying and digital scanning, are also discussed. The author then explores how the elements and principles of design are used in collage, and how they in turn are employed in all the major genre, including still life, landscape, the human figure, abstraction, and nonobjective imagery. Beautifully illustrated with the work of more than eighty noted artists, including Edward Betts, Jae Carmichael, Margo Hoff, Katherine Chang Liu, and Fred Otnes, Collage Techniques is an essential reference for all artists and illustrators, regardless of their creative focus or choice of medium.

Yale University Press Poisoned Abstraction
Book SynopsisA definitive resource, full of fresh insights and new revelations, on one of the most influential interwar artists Trade Review“An exceptional example of complex academic research, which has has been elegantly articulated in a well-balanced and beautifully produced volume.”—Beth Williamson, Burlington Magazine“In Poisoned Abstraction, Graham Bader presents the conflict between actual refuse and abstract composition not as an obstacle to [Schwitters’s] work but as our way into it. . . . On the one hand, the rubbish deployed by Schwitters affronted traditional ideas of artmaking; on the other, its use pointed to a new aesthetic responsive to the ruinous aftermath of the war. To lose this tension—to reject the work as mere trash, as the reactionaries did, or as autonomous art, as the radicals did—is to miss the dialectical force that drives it.”—Hal Foster, London Review of Books“In this beautiful, lavishly illustrated book, Bader provides an excellent analysis of Schwitters (1887–1948), one of modern art’s most original and versatile figures. Bader sets Schwitters’s creations in the landscape of his times, from his early Merz collages dating around 1919 to his mature production in the 1940s . . . [and] provides a coherent, well-argued analysis of the theoretical forces that actuated the artist’s work, enabling him to cope with exile and radical change. Summing up: Recommended.”—E. G. Wickersham, Choice“Poisoned Abstraction is the account of Schwitters for our moment. Its comprehensiveness does justice to the complexity of his art and critically expands our understanding of Schwitters himself.”—Bibiana Obler, George Washington University“A fascinating analysis of Kurt Schwitters’s body of work. Graham Bader successfully makes sense of Schwitters’s often puzzling art, its evolution, and its meaning in a context that shifted dramatically between the two world wars.”—Andrés Mario Zervigón, author of John Heartfield and the Agitated Image: Photography, Persuasion, and the Rise of Avant-Garde Photomontage“Graham Bader’s elegant study explores key aspects of Kurt Schwitters’s practice, testing the artist’s relay between art and life. In exploring how Schwitters’s works, made from the shards of a devastated modern landscape, create meaning and value, Bader is a thoughtful and probing guide.”—Leah Dickerman, Museum of Modern Art

Notting Hill Editions What Time Is It?
Book Synopsis"Patience, patience, because the great movements of history have always begun in those small parenthesis that we call 'in the meantime.'" --John Berger The last book that John Berger wrote was this precious little volume about time titled What Time Is It?, now posthumously published for the first time in English by Notting Hill Editions. Berger died before it was completed, but the text has been assembled and illustrated by his longtime collaborator and friend Sel uk Demirel, and has an introduction by Maria Nadotti. What Time Is It? is a profound and playful meditation on the illusory nature of time. Berger, the great art critic and Man Booker Prize-winning author, reflects on what time has come to mean to us in modern life. Our perception of time assumes a uniform and ceaseless passing of time, yet time is turbulent. It expands and contracts according to the intensity of the lived moment. We talk of time "saved" in a hundred household appliances; time, like money, is exchanged for the content it lacks. Berger posits the idea that time can lengthen lifetimes once we seize the present moment. "What-is-to-come, what-is-to-be-gained empties what-is."Trade ReviewPraise for John Berger and Sel uk Demirel "John Berger writes about what is important, not just interesting. In contemporary English letters he seems to me peerless; not since Lawrence has there been a writer who offers such attentiveness to the sensual world."--Susan Sontag "In his ceaselessly inventive work, Sel uk often uses parts of the body in ways that are characteristically Turkish...as if the comedy of the human condition were there in the human body, in the melancholy of anatomy."--John Berger Praise for Cataract "I love this small book of intricate insight."--Michael Ondaatje
