Book SynopsisThis Routledge Handbook takes a truly global and multidisciplinary approach to exploring all facets of employee communication.Beginning from two key disciplinary approaches â organizational communication and public relations â scholars capture and define employee communication from both perspectives, addressing commonalities and bridging disciplinary differences. This volume places importance on the everyday communicative behaviors by internal members such as leaders, managers, inter/generational cohorts, employees, and those working on behalf of organizations, such as social media influencers, and on expansive conceptualizations of employee such as chatbots, environment, and global supply chain members involved in organizing. Book SynopsisThe United States is facing a worsening epidemic of physician burnout with unprecedented numbers of them leaving the workforce and practice of clinical medicine across all career stages. The prevalence of physician burnout has accelerated through COVID-19, resulting in an anticipated serious national shortage of physicians within the current decade amidst an increased proportion of aging and unhealthy population. The critical shortage of physicians coupled with an unhealthy physician workforce results in longer wait times for access, continued increased healthcare costs, decreased quality of care, and worsening patient experience. Despite increasing media coverage, published data, and identification of system-based factors that erode physician wellbeing, no standardized systematic solution has been implemented across hospitals, health systems, or a variety of employment models or practice settings for any or all doctors regardless of whether they are primary care, medi

Book SynopsisEvery day we hear of serious errors of judgement that result in organisational disaster. Why do seemingly successful businesses, NGOs, or even political parties fall prey to irrevocable governance breakdowns or, worse still, criminal malpractice? By prompting readers to think deeply about strategic decision-making, human behaviour, and cognitive biases, this book offers a disciplined, objective, and thoughtful approach to making better decisions.Every strategic problem is fundamentally a journey into the unknown, which involves a unique combination of duration, scale, external and internal dynamics, and personal motivations. Rarely is a strategic decision solved by saying, If a situation is A, then the solution is B.' The book explores how to develop a strong foundation for problem resolving rather than simplistic problem-solving by strengthening competence so that decisions are made wisely. The âalways onâ attitude that digital technologies encourage brings an equal mix of benefits and challenges. The ready availability of digital technology has transformed the way we live, learn, play and interact â but how a business can turn the tools into an economic and organisational advantage is not always clear. This new edition of Strategic Digital Transformation enables students and business leaders to take a strategic and sustainable approach to realising the value of digital technologies. It offers results-driven solutions that successfully transform organisations into data-driven, people-focused businesses capable of sustainably competing at a global level. The current challenges facing all small organisations, including limited resources, financial pressures and the lack of dedicated IT departments, are explored. The authors consider the ways in which innovation can increase competitive advantage, how innovative business models can create new opportunities and how a data-driven perspective can release embedded value within the organisation. Contemporary international case studies and examples throughout each chapter bridge theory with practical application and systematically document the patterns of activities that enable success. All chapters have been completely revised and updated to reflect advances in technology and to highlight the social and economic consequences of digital transformation. This textbook is a vital resource for postgraduate and undergraduate students of digital business, innovation and transformation. By showing how to initiate digital transformation across an organisation, it will prepare business owners, directors and management of small- and medium-sized businesses to take strategic advantage of new and emerging technologies to stay ahead of their competition.

  • Taylor & Francis Systems Leadership

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisThe new edition of this influential and bestselling book is concerned with how people come together to achieve a productive purpose. Survival and success in business and social terms have always depended upon our ability to form and sustain social organisations. People have a deep need to be creative and to belong. By creating positive organisations we can fulfil these needs and build a worthwhile society. One of the failures of organisations is precisely the lack of efficient and effective social organisation, which is what this whole book is about. Poor social organisation, including poor leadership, are major drivers of poor productivity and lead people to give up or retreat into a minimalist approach of just doing what is needed to get by and survive. The authors provide a language for developing, discussing, thinking and working with propositions about organisations and management. They do not tell you what decision to make but rather present tools to help you consider, aTrade ReviewReviews of the previous edition:'Like most leaders, I have initiated many changes in organizations - some were successful and others were disasters! While the changes may have been ultimately achieved, it was more trial and error, with loss of time, human capital and leadership trust. This book revolutionized my approach to leadership and cultural change. It is a "how-to", providing the requisite roadmap with many practical tools for the leadership tool belt to help transform efficiently any organization. Having worked across several mining and metals industries and in countries from the United States, to Wales and Russia, these tools transcend all cultures providing common, practical people-based concepts that will stay with you for a lifetime. This material is not "rocket science" - it is a refreshing reinforcement of the common sense behaviors all leaders must have to be successful, but may have lost in their search for the "quick fixes" or "silver bullets.' Wayne R. Hale, Senior Vice President, Upstream SUAL-Holding, Moscow, Russia'I have been eagerly awaiting "Systems Leadership (McDonald. Et. Al)". The theoretical understandings and tools developed by the authors have long been central to my work. "Systems Leadership" however exceeds my expectations. It greatly extends my understanding. While I will use system leaderships as a seminal text as a school leader, I realise anyone fair dinkum about leadership or organisational effectiveness, no matter the size or context of their organisation, will also benefit. I needed this book. I will use it, because I know the material works.' Don Anderson, Tagai State College, Australia'This work is based on a multitude of practical experiences where the sustainable benefits from implementing the methodology have been very significant . … Experienced Leaders will recognise much of this material as a good fit with their intuitive understanding of how they have achieved success in the past . The value of this work is the ability to standardise this insight and to develop a new generation of leaders with confidence in a positive outcome both for them and the organisation.' Oscar Groeneveld, Chief Executive , Rio Tinto Aluminium 'This book is a must read for those who want to attain sustainable competitive advantage as the world moves away from industrial relations systems to human relations models. It helps build the prerequisites for an organisation to link its human systems to the business model (and vice versa). CEO’s, executives, boards, policy advisors and academics should read it if sustainable productivity improvement is on their agenda. After all, multi factor productivity is ultimately driven by labour productivity. Social process deserves the same degree of rigour that we traditionally apply to science, engineering etc. if we are to achieve the most challenging and rewarding work through proper and ethical concepts of leadership.' David Murray, retired CEO of Commonwealth Bank and Chairman, Future Fund'Systems Leadership is some of the most important work ever written with respect to understanding and improving organisations and their culture, irrespective of size or type. For those of us in the business of running companies, advising to executive teams or boards, Macdonald provides the ability to predict with absolute certainty the effect of management initiatives, well meaning or otherwise, on the organisations culture and employee relations. It provides a framework for the design of your organisation and people systems. Virgin Blue Airlines, voted Worlds Best low cost airline in 2004 and 2005, continue to use Systems Leadership theories to guide the rapid growth of our business and maintain our unique guest service experience. I cannot recommend the practical importance of this work more highly to those serious about sustaining an effective executive career.' Bruce Highfield, General Manager People and founding executive team member, Virgin Blue Airlines Ltd'Systems Leadership provides a unique perspective on the social building blocks that need to be put in place for businesses to be positioned to deliver success. It doesn’t promise miracles, it provides a framework for leaders to create an environment in which people are encouraged to fully utilise their capabilities to deliver a successful organization. MacDonald et al have refreshingly acknowledged there are no shortcuts or silver bullets to delivering performance. Leaders must understand the world in which they exist and provide appropriate context for the teams they lead....don’t read this book if you don’t have the courage and perseverance to lead change. Our business is people and we will ultimately be measured as leaders by the results people deliver.' Instead, a dynamic new vision of crisis management is offered, which takes into account different kinds of crisis demanding diverse solutions. The key role of leadership is also evaluated in relation to both internally and externally generated crises. 15 in stock

Book SynopsisWith business schools becoming increasingly market-driven, questionable trends have emerged, such as the conflation of academic and corporate management, and the notion that academics and students are market players, who respond rationally to market signals. • Taylor & Francis Ltd Kindness in Leadership

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisIn a global climate of increasing complexity and uncertainty, there have been calls for a more responsible form of leadership in business and society. The relationship between kindness and leadership is therefore a topic of fundamental importance for our well-being as individuals, for the success of our organisations, and for the future of our global community. Kindness in Leadership is one of the first books to explore both the concept and practice of kindness in leadership and consider them in different societal and organisational settings. Its uniqueness lies in combining an innovative mix of personal views from leaders with explorations of organisational philosophies and practices. It opens with a definition of kindness and its contours and underpinnings. It then explores the importance of kindness within different organisations, parts of the world, economic strata, age groups and genders, drawing on research on organisational compassion and neuroscience. In order Trade Review"There is too little attention given to the importance of kindness in leadership. Maybe this book can help to shift the paradigm of leadership so that kindness takes a bigger place in the list of characteristics sought in selecting and promoting leaders in all kinds of organisations in society." Professor Ariane Berthoin Antal, research director, WZB Berlin Social Science Center, Germany "Having heard from several of my superiors in my career about ‘being too soft and compassionate’ as an improvement area, I was delighted to read about the virtues of ‘kindness in leadership.’ This book by some eminent thought leaders, reassured me that kindness in leaders is their strength and it has a direct bearing on the success of any pursuit."Deepak Chopra, Group CEO, Anand Group, India"What a beautiful, thought provoking exploration of this poorly explored yet absolutely critical dimension of leadership. It will show you of the power of kindness and how it can transform your leadership."Professor Jay A. Conger, Henry R. Kravis Professor of Leadership Studies, Claremont McKenna College, USA"In today’s complex, rapidly changing high tech. world, kindness in leadership is more important than ever. The collective wisdom of the authors, all experts in the field of leadership and business, brings together important insights and practices. A kinder world is a more productive world where individuals and corporations can thrive." Katherine Corich, Founder and Chair, Sysdoc Group"This book makes a compelling case for kindness and fairness contributing to business success. Kindness certainly contributes to business success, but it is not an easy option and needs wholehearted involvement from the top."John Elliott MBE DL, Executive Chairman, Ebac Ltd, UK"Kindness is at the very heart of our philosophy but it demands that everyone lives and breathes it every day. The human, financial and societal outcomes are tangible and will endure through future generations." Richard Everard OBE DL, Chairman, Everards Brewery Ltd, UK"It might not be high on the corporate agenda – but this terrific book shows the central role that kindness can play in making our corporations and society a better place."Professor Lynda Gratton, Professor of Management Practice, London Business School, UK"This could be the book which changes global perception and appreciation of kindness in leadership, bringing it to the fore in the considered development of our organisations and societies. The authors’ panoramic exploration of the many manifestations and impacts of kindness highlights the immense value of this inexhaustible, infinitely sharable, inner resource. The book is a true gift to the literature on Leadership and a convincing exposition of how we would all benefit from making kindness more visible in the world." Professor Suzi Jarvis, Founding Director, UCD Innovation Academy, University College Dublin, Ireland "Kindness is not an optional. In a world that is getting more complex and digital every day, kindness is an indispensable component of successful leadership."Nadin Meloth, International Co-President, European Women’s Development International Network (EWMD) and Business Coach "Hard, compelling justification for kind leadership. A powerful addition to our understanding of why organisational cultures based on trust and engagement deliver superior results."Major General David Mulhall, DSC, AM, CSC, Commander Joint Logistics, Australian Defence Force, Department of Defence, Australia "Real insights into win-win global leadership and collaboration, Kindness in Leadership is a nice reminder to all of us, in whatever role we play in society, kindness can make a remarkable impact on everything we do. Indeed, a common virtue and practice that transcends through cultures of Developed and Emerging markets."Beng Neoh, Managing Director, North Asia, AMP Capital, China "Kindness in Leadership" provides the ‘ying’ to governance frameworks' ‘yang’ that so often is discussed in isolation resulting in a bureaucratic tick-box exercise. The contributors provide a fresh, and at times revelatory, new approach to leadership and influencing culture in professional and high performance environments; exploring good old-fashioned courtesy, respect and fairness. The perfect antidote to compliance that could prove an essential accompaniment to the revised Corporate Governance Code."Annamarie Phelps CBE, Vice Chair, British Olympic Association, UK"This thought-provoking and ambitious book makes a strong case for integrating kindness into the complicated role of leadership, a topic that is not discussed enough. Fairness and kindness have contributed significantly to my law firm's financial success, stability, and remarkable retention of top professionals and staff employees." Arthur J. Shartsis J.D., Founding Partner, Shartsis Friese LLP, San Francisco, USA"Everyone agrees that kindness is an important virtue; yet conceptually, especially in leadership work, it can be elusive. Kindness in Leadership elucidates the various facets of kindness as an important set of values in our leadership practices in a clear, insightful and practical manner. Values-based leadership is needed now more than ever before in this current climate of rapid and disruptive changes. This book gives us the stimulus to think much harder about it and hopefully practise it conscientiously." I am inspired to further ingrain it in my organization which places compassion at its core."Dr Mohd Azhari Yakub, CEO and Cardiac Surgeon, National Heart Institute, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia "This is a book that is most needed in this time of divisiveness in politics, international relations and society at large. 15 in stock

What do business school graduates learn, and how helpful is it for managing in the everyday, messy reality of organisations? What does it mean to apply ''best practice'', or to take up ''evidence-based management'' and what kind of thinking does this imply? In Rethinking Management, Chris Mowles argues that many management courses still largely assume a linear and predictable world, when experience tells us that the opposite is the case. He questions some of the more orthodox conceptual assumptions that underpin much management education and instead, encourages leaders and managers to take their everyday experience of working with others seriously. People in organisations co-operate and compete to get things done, and constrain and enable each other in relationships of power. Because of this there are always unintended consequences of our actions - uncertainty is inherent in the everyday. Chris Mowles draws on the complexity sciences, the sciences of uncertainty rather than certainty,

Book SynopsisProfessions have long provided a dependable body of expertise that organisations have relied upon to fulfil goals. Issues around equality and diversity alongside challenges to expert knowledge in the neo-liberal era have created profound challenges for this type of worker, even while creating opportunities for newer varieties of expert labour to establish themselves as professionals. This shortform book provides a critical synthesis of the current state of the field from an international perspective. It highlights the key opportunities and challenges for the professions and professionalism within both the public and private sectors as a field of research, practice and policy. The first half of the book deals with the comparative history, theories and inequalities of the professions. This provides a basis for our understanding of how the professions have had to adapt and how governance, management and leadership have come to shape the emerging and evolving models of professions and professionalism. The book draws on case studies and through its analysis illustrates the organisational and sociological dimensions of the field. This book will be of interest to scholars, academics and students in the fields of business, management and sociology, especially those conducting research and studies around the professions and professionalism.Trade Review"The book presents an overview of the field of professions and professionalism which is succinct yet remarkably comprehensive. Book SynopsisWe know a lot about change leadership. We understand how to design change programmes, and we know how to prescribe best practice change methods. Yet, despite all this knowledge, it is reported that up to 70% of change leadership projects fail to realize many of their objectives. The fault lines are cited as occurring at the micro level of social interaction. What we don't adequately explain and demonstrate within the change leadership literature is how change leaders may consciously generate in themselves and in others resourceful mindsets, emotions, attitudes, and behaviours to enable positive change leadership dynamics. Neuro-Linguistic Programming for Change Leaders: The Butterfly Effect fills this gap by connecting the practices of personal development with those of corporate change leadership. This book has the vision of advancing NLP as a serious technology in the change leader's tool box. Part I, Theoretical basis, examines third-generation coaching as a collaborative dialogue form, the societal context of the coaching process and the concept of identity in modern society. Part II, Basic themes of fruitful dialogue, examines meaning-making, value and the narrative perspective, and their significance in creating a new dialogue culture. Finally, Part III, Reflections on dialogue practice, explores the art of being a supporting dialogue guide, drawing on a number of theoretical perspectives and focusing on developing relational competencies. This book crystallises his latest thinking and will be invaluable to coaches, consultants and everyone who has an interest in developmental approaches to coaching. A must read." - Professor Anthony M. Professor Stelter’s command of the thought of thinkers such as Buber, Gendlin, and Kierkegaard is exemplary as is his synthesis of philosophical and psychological theory with the field of coaching practice. He is mindful of the chaotic social and cultural context in which we live and brings to it a deeply humanistic and insightful perspective on how meaningful dialogue can help those who are coached. This holistic and integrative psychology provides the foundations for working with leaders in ways that respond to today's emergent crises.Psychosynthesis coaching is an increasingly popular approach that is finding its way into the mainstream as a response to the needs of coaching to engage at depth with emotional content and in the transpersonal realm of meaning, purpose and values. This book introduces psychosynthesis coaching to a wider audience and provides a comprehensive guide to this approach for both coaches and leaders. Book SynopsisAimed at senior HRM and L&D specialists responsible for improving their organisation's managerial talent, Improving Managerial Talent covers the core findings of the author's and other published research. It provides a highly participative overview of personality and ability psychometrics, involving the opportunity for self-application. It reveals hard evidence of the extent to which such tests can add value to the prediction of managerial success and their link to requisite competencies. It shows how qualified testers, HR and line managers can each make a unique contribution to the selection process. The book goes on to show how management style is a product of personality and habit and how the acquisition and use of a complementary style can improve persuasiveness and the cultivation of interpersonal skill both for the manager and for those whom the manager might need to coach. Book SynopsisLeaders work hard to develop strong leadership capabilities in today's modern organizations, for the benefit of their teams and for their own careers. But, sometimes conventional leadership theory fails to explain why our efforts fail to make an impact, and arguably are becoming less and less successful. Why would this be?The answer lies in our evolutionary history. Leadership is integral to our success and evolution as a species, as larger better functioning groups out-survived fragmented groups that did not benefit from strong leadership. Leader-follower relationships are, therefore, deeply ingrained in our brains, our instincts and our behaviour. But, our modern world, with its technology, connectedness and complexity, has evolved much faster than our brains and our leader-follower behaviour has not caught up.Evolve charts the fascinating development of our evolutionary history to provide a profound understanding of human behaviour around leadership. Book SynopsisWellbeing in the workplace is an essential element in fostering a worker's sense of being valued, ensuring their engagement, and ultimately leading to higher levels of productivity and organizational performance. This important book specifically adds to the discussion by taking a global perspective, and evaluates wellbeing in the workplace in different countries, identifying both universal issues and specific cultural issues. Chapter authors have been drawn from across five continents and eleven countries to provide ground-breaking research in wellbeing from different regional perspectives, looking at both developed and developing world scenarios. What is clear throughout the book is that organizations that are not people-centered undermine their capacity to attain and maintain quality standards, high performance, and competitiveness. Organizational concerns about workers'' wellbeing are growing exponentially due to the global VUCA (volatile, uncertain, cTrade ReviewThe topic of wellbeing at work has been discussed by many authors for a long time. Depending on the organizational context there are multiple approaches to studying wellbeing. One of the most relevant aspects is the relationship between worker’s performance and physical and mental health. Congratulations to editors and authors for this brilliant work that explores wellbeing with broad and current approaches!Mario Teixeira Reis Neto, Professor, Doctoral and Master Business Program, Fumec University, BrazilAt a time when organizations face unavoidable disruptions it is essential a better and comprehensive understanding of wellbeing in the workplace. This book helps organizations understand those differences, how to build workplace environments and cultures that support these new generational paradigms and can include their best and brightest.Josephine McMurray, Assistant Professor, Lazaridis School of Business & Economics, Wilfrid Laurier University, CanadaThere are two important roles of management in society: to create innovations and new products that satisfy societal needs, and to manage and nurture healthy organizations that promote the wellbeing of collaborators. This book is a very timely and solid contribution to this discussion, both for educators and decision makers.Sergio Olavarrieta, Vice-Dean of the Faculty of Economics and Business, University of Chile, Chile This is an apt title to put forth in the current business environment as it entails a primordial perspective often neglected in performance management: Management is always about people and success in any kind of undertakings relies on how people feel about conditions in their workplace. Institutions prosper if they provide not just an atmosphere but real circumstances for wellbeing from the shop floor to the C-suites. The great benefit of this book is the wide array of viewpoints on wellbeing in the workplace. Roland Bardy, Board Member, Wittenberg Center for Global Ethics, GermanyThe downward cycle of being over-extended and exhausted negatively affects the organisational culture. These cycles can lead to burnout for individuals and slow death for organizations. This book analyzes one of the most worrying and essential matters of our current society: wellbeing at work. It is an important contribution to comparative thinking, drawing from multiple national experiences.Jose Joaquín Brunner, UNESCO Chair, Comparative Higher Education Systems and Policies, Universidad Diego Portales, Chile For the last 80 years, scientists have been highly aware of the importance to synchronize technical with social change. Nonetheless, financial-economic performance goals frequently have superseded social goals in most management approaches. This book on human centered management and employee wellbeing resonates as a new management framework enhancing attention on the role of human beings in company's success. The alignment shown in this book converging human minded workers with high performance work systems in the workplace brings about necessary innovation in the 21st century.Peter Oeij, Senior research scientist, The Netherlands Organisation, The NetherlandsWellbeing at work is an imperative rising to the top of the agenda of company managers, policy makers and stakeholders. The workplace is, besides providing a living, also about a positive environment to develop oneself and to find meaningful relations with others. This book shows how to understand the emerging concept of human wellbeing in the workplace. It shows that wellbeing at work is no longer a luxury of Western workers but a priority worldwide. The book shows and shares experiences from around the world on wellbeing at work. Practitioners and researchers will find good reasons to invest time in this important subject.Steven Dhondt, Professor in Sociological Research, University of Leuven, Belgium The effects of economic globalization have produced negative effects on the health of workers with major managerial challenge for organizations. Social development and economic growth are sustainable when they are synchronized with the promotion of wellbeing at work. The global effects are even more perverse in countries like Brazil where organizations are less inclined to make investments in strategies and structures that promote wellbeing at work. This book includes relevant international contributions from a variety of countries about organizational changes focused on effective management of wellbeing at work. I highly endorse its publication.Jairo Eduardo Borges-Andrade, Professor, Graduate Program in Social, Work and Organizational Psychology, University of Brasília, BrazilNurturing wellbeing of individuals and organizations in a sustainable way is a major challenge of Industry 4.0. Wellbeing is a major indicator of quality of life, health, adjustment, and thriving. This book breaks new ground by bringing wellbeing to the forefront on a sustainable and global basis.Nicholas Beutell, Professor of Management, School of Business, Iona College, USAThe amount of challenges and disruptions the workforce and managers are facing are unprecedented in modern history. Demographic change, competing global markets, economic uncertainty, new technology, all defy the most important dimension of the workplace: people. Organizational mission and the wellbeing of people present significant challenges to balance, but in the last century the metrics of success has been skewed towards financial outcomes often at the expense of people and wellbeing. This book explores a comprehensive number of paths to success centered on people across many dimensions of wellbeing, from safety to job satisfaction, from education to achieving self-actualization. A certainly welcome new vision of wellbeing in the workplace! Ronald W. Projects may fail because project management does not take the requirements, wishes and concerns of stakeholders sufficiently into account. Projects can only be successful through contributions from stakeholders. And it is the stakeholders that evaluate whether they find the project successful - an evaluation based on criteria that go beyond receiving the project deliverables. More often than not, the criteria are implicit and change during the project course. This is an enormous challenge for project managers. The route to better projects, say Pernille Eskerod and Anna Lund Jepsen, lies in finding ways to improve project stakeholder management. Book SynopsisOrganizations regularly assume that the culture, values, dynamic and organization of their temporary project organizations are merely a smaller version of the original parent. Given that project organizations are made up of people and teams drawn, in most cases, from outside and inside the parent, these assumptions are nonsensical. But they do explain why the HR function finds it difficult to adapt to the project environment. Martina Huemann''s research in Human Resource Management in the Project-Oriented Organization, offers insight into an approach that is designed to align HR to the needs of the project organization, in terms of management structure, reward, recruitment and performance systems. The text analyses how the modern HR organization stacks up alongside the temporary organization that is the project, to identify the HR constraints and needs of the project organisation and offer a model of project-oriented HRM. Professor Huemann had a deep interest in how and why change pTrade Review’I first learned about the Project-oriented Organization and the theories and methods of Martina Huemann in 2000. She is one of the pioneers and was in charge of research projects in this area for the IPMA at that time. This book gives a very comprehensive and ready-to-use overview of what is needed in this area.’ Mag. Brigitte Schaden, President of Projekt Management Austria ’The book illustrates the complexities and difficulties of HRM applied to projects. It explains, in an easy-to-read way, the roles and the human-characteristic requirements to fit, as well as organizational and PM concepts required to fully understand what a HRM system for PM should be. Moreover, the book presents a model for such a HRM system. It constitutes an excellent reference for both scholars and practitioners, and is an invaluable support tool in teaching PM.’ Juan Carlos Nogueira, Universidad ORT Uruguay ’I find this book by Dr Huemann an important contribution to the field because of its original approach to the human factor in project management. Being involved in projects and in contact with project practitioners for more than 25 years, I realized that experienced project managers ask themselves "Who?" before "What?", "When?" and "How?" when starting a project. Dr Huemann addresses this question analyzing crucial matters such as temporary organizations, project based organizations, the roles of the project manager and other stakeholders, and human resource management in projects. It offers the means to manage groups of projects with a common business purpose in an integrated and effective way. The Second Edition of Michel Thiry's Program Management builds on the bestselling title first published in 2010. The heavily revised text reflects the latest program management guides and international standards and includes: a new section on agile management in programs; the author's own program management maturity measure; a new section on change management, which is now integral to many programs. This is essential reading for those moving from narrow technical to broader leadership skills, critical to value-driven organisations under pressure to deliver better strategies through program management.’ Chris Stevens, Principal, Project Standards and Practice, NBN Co, Australia; member of PMI’s Standards Members Advisory Group ’Already a cornerstone in the library of important industry publications, the first edition of Program Management by Dr Michel Thiry broke new ground in 2010 by providing a clearly understandable and practical context for sifting through an assortment of conflicting and sometimes competing views about the application of program management in organizations. In many ways, the first edition was a catalyst for many of the advances in program management practice we recognize and enjoy today. This second edition reflects the deep understanding Dr Thiry has gained since the first publication through careful observation, critical thinking, and the art and science of hard-won experience. This latest update by one of the industry’s foremost thought leaders reveals an awareness of the critically important role program management now plays in organizations large and small for the delivery of key strategic benefits and real, measurable value in an increasingly complex, fast-paced, unpredictable and continually evolving (shall we say... agile) business environment. Book SynopsisThis book provides a comprehensive view of the application of Relational Gestalt theory to Organisation Development and change interventions in organisations. Uncertainty and frequent change are the hallmark of our times. In the field of Organisational Development and Change, fixed methodologies no longer adequately address the uncertainty and uniqueness of today's more complex change situations and more adaptive approaches to change are needed.Gestalt is a relational, dialogic, and emergent approach which means that it views individuals and organisations as embedded in their context, dependent on, and emerging from within a web of relationships and interactions. As such, Gestalt offers a transformative, integral and bespoke methodology for working with this complexity. This approach supports practitioners to attend to their presence, seek out the most pressing issues and mobilise for sustainable change. Gestalt has at its heart the notion of use-of-self as instrument which allows practitioners to be responsive to emergent issues and situations.Relational Organisational Gestalt is at the leading-edge of Gestalt theory and application in organisational settings. It explores key skills and methods of a relational Gestalt organisational practitioner such as inquiry into here-and-now embodied experience, identification and engagement in dialogue and finally, embedding and sustaining change in the field. Developing personal awareness, presence and use-of-self is a fundamental part of facilitating change. Each chapter therefore offers guidance regards application and suggests experiential exercises.Gestalt has long been at the forefront of psychological approaches applied to Organisational Development and change in organisations. This book offers a radically relational approach that is accessible to coaches, consultants, facilitators, managers and other OD practitioners.Trade Review"This book reinvigorates an age-old pattern in human institution—the ‘process of relating’ through the Gestalt lens. It also re-examines in the context of complexity, interdependence, connection in which emergence is the main reality, whether OD and Gestalt can draw on each other to make systemic wide change sustainable beyond the intra, inter, group levels. The ‘relational frame’ of practice is thoroughly explained via a clear exposition of the field of Gestalt. This makes the book an important educational, informative, and accessible resource to both novice and experienced Gestalt/OD practitioners. Dr Chidiac has made a significant contribution to the applied behavioural science field—very well done indeed."—Dr. Mee-Yan Cheung-Judge, recipient of two "Life Time Achievement Award" in the field of Organisation Development (US Organisation Development Network 2013; International OD Association 2016)"This important book is about transformational organisational change: what clients say they want, but for which they are seldom prepared. As Chidiac convincingly argues, transformational change is an emergent, unpredictable process, and organisations are, at their core a series of multi-layered, complex relationships that can be grouped into forms, patterns and interactive processes. Chidiac helps us to understand how to help create the conditions for this emergence. One doesn't just learn to see organizations as multidimensional forms, forces, and fields, but as living, breathing entities. I recommend it highly."—Joseph Melnick, Ph.D., Founding Editor, Gestalt Review and Co-Chair, Cape Cod Training Program, Gestalt International Study Center"This is a wonderful book! I love it. It offers theory in a comprehensive, yet accessible way that is perfectly balanced with practical tips. Core concepts of the Gestalt Relational approach are highlighted in such a way that I stayed interested until the last page. The case studies also offer a clear illustration of what this approach means in practice. With presence at the heart of the Gestalt Relational approach, the author has managed to convey this in each page through her own presence. Many compliments."—Frans Meulmeester, author, Changing is Standing Still: A Gestalt Perspective on Organizations and Chair of the EAGT GPO Committee."This book places the Gestalt approach to organisations within the relational turn of contemporary human sciences. The process of relating is central today in many fields, and the world of organisations urgently needs new perspectives and tools to consider its functioning in a wider look than just a productive machine. Marie-Anne Chidiac describes in a clear and well-structured way her relational Gestalt approach to organizational development. Hers is a courageous and effective model that adds dignity to liveliness, which is enormously empowering of any organisation. This can lead organisations toward an integrated experience of working-with at a personal, social, political level."—Margherita Spagnuolo Lobb, Director, Istituto di Gestalt HCC Italy (www.gestaltitaly.com); author of The Now for Next in Psychotherapy: Gestalt Therapy Recounted in Post Modern SocietyTable of ContentsI: Understanding Emergent and Relational Approaches; One: From organisations as machines to living systems; Two: Gestalt as a relational and emergent approach; Three: The organisational self: a gestalt view of organisational functioning; II: Gestalt Concepts and Practices; Presence; Four: A relational orientation and ethical presence; Sensing; Five: Raising awareness and phenomenological inquiry; Six: Field theory and the cycle of experience; Supporting; Seven: At the threshold: meditations on will, grace, and liminal space *; Eight: The practice of dialogue and relational support; Nine: The art of gestalt interventions; Sustaining; Ten: Experimentation; Eleven: Endings and unfinished business; III: Applying Gestalt to Organisational Settings; Twelve: Practice considerations in introducing a gestalt approach; Thirteen: Relational gestalt coaching: a transcript of dialogue at work; Fourteen: Gestalt work with a family business; Fifteen: Bringing gestalt to cyber security; Sixteen: Supporting a merger in the pharmaceutical industry

Book SynopsisThis authoritative source book on the learning and creative application of the systems psychodynamic perspective defines the field, presenting the key concepts, models, and social methodologies that derive from it, together with their theoretical and conceptual underpinnings in psychoanalysis, group relations and open systems theory.Trade Review'This is a stimulating and thought-provoking volume that is sure to further develop clearer insights about organizations and change. The Introduction and nine chapters offer well-structured and accessible explorations of some key aspects of psychodynamic and systems thinking, together with ideas from group relations work, to illuminate typical challenges facing organizations. The mixture of conceptual writing and case material should prove interesting to readers from a range of outlooks, disciplines, and levels of experience. Topics addressed include: leadership, conflict, dependence and dependency, enablers and obstacles of change, and culture. Attention to these relevant dimensions of organizational work should lead to deeper knowledge of what may help and hinder organizations to develop and to change.'- Ruth Levitt, Office for Public Management, LondonTable of ContentsIntroduction -- Applying Learning from Experience: The Intersection of Psychoanalysis and Organizational Role Consultation -- The Exercise of Authority in a Dependent Context -- An Organization Looks at Itself: Psychoanalytic and Group Relations Perspectives on Facilitating Organizational Transition -- Complexity at the “Edge” of the Basic-Assumption Group -- Enemies Within and Without: Paranoia and Regression in Groups and Organizations -- Dilemmas of Organizational Change: A Systems Psychodynamic Perspective -- A Large-System Intervention: The Influence of Organisational Culture -- Institutional Learning as Chief Executive -- The Leader, the Unconscious, and the Management of the Organisation

Book SynopsisIt has been claimed that organisation theory is in a state of 'crisis'. This book traces the history of the orthodox systems theory paradigm in organisation studies from its foundations in positivist sociology, through its theoretical and empirical development under structural-functionalism, to its recent deconstruction by postmodernists. The analysis offers general support for the 'sociology-in-crisis' thesis, but takes issue with one of its main propositions, that paradigms are incommensurable. It is argued that paradigms are porous rather than hermetic phenomena, a fact which has profound implications for the theory building process. Based on language-game philosophy, a dialectical theory is developed to illustrate how seemingly exclusive idioms can be mediated. The enquiry provides a pluri-paradigm method for organisational research, and an epistemological framework for postmodern organisational analysis.Trade Review'An exciting and important book…a significant contribution to organization theory.'
