Duke University Press Diary of a Detour
Book SynopsisDiary of a Detour is film scholar and author Lesley Stern''s memoir of living with chronic lymphocytic leukemia. She chronicles the fears and daily experience of coming to grips with an incurable form of cancer by describing the dramas and delving into the science. Stern also nudges cancer off center stage by turning to alternative obsessions and pleasures. In seductive writing she describes her life in the garden and kitchen, the hospital and the library, and her travels—down the street to her meditation center, across the border to Mexico, and across the world to Australia. Her immediate world is inhabited with books, movies, politics, and medical reports that provoke essayistic reflections. As her environment is shared with friends, chickens, a cat called Elvis, mountain goats, whales, lions, and microbes the book opens onto a larger than human world. Intimate and meditative, engrossing and singular, Diary of a Detour offers new ideas about what it might mean to Trade Review“Diary of a Detour is such a great book, excessive like Lesley Stern's own intense appetite for life that includes her wide knowledge about the intricacies of disease. It's the most pleasurable cancer book imaginable. I was riveted, the specificity of the writing is a drug. Stern has written a wonderful, stirring, magnificent book. Oh, World, you are the love object of this hardworking, self-deprecating extravagant genius.” -- Eileen Myles, author of * Evolution *“Diary of a Detour is wonderful on so many levels. Besides being an extraordinary writer, Lesley Stern is emotionally and intellectually sophisticated in such subtle and deep ways. She outlines the stakes of learning to live and feel in the grip of inescapable finitude and mortality, together with others of many kinds and species, but also alone, as irreducibly this vulnerable person and no other. I love this book.” -- Donna J. Haraway, author of * Staying with the Trouble: Making Kin in the Chthulucene *"What emerges most powerfully is Stern’s determination to live—not just to stay alive but, as Tennyson writes in 'Ulysses,' 'To strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield.' . . . A mixture of the mundane and the medical, the ordinary and the extraordinary." * Kirkus Reviews *"[Stern's] final book, the magnificent Diary of a Detour (2020) that appeared just before her passing, records how the force of obsession – obsessions with planting and tending, with chickens, with the growing and preparing of food, with the cycles of nature – literally prolonged her life, pulling her through into new and brilliant investigations, and an ever-widening collaboration with activists at all levels of the environmental movement." -- Adrian Martin * ArtsHub *Table of ContentsAcknowledgments ix 1. Cornell University Press Cancer Crossings
Book SynopsisWhen Eric Wendel was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia in 1966, the survival rate was 10 percent. Today, it is 90 percent. Even as politicians call for a Cancer Moonshot, this accomplishment remains a pinnacle in cancer research. The author's daughter, then a medical student at Georgetown Medical School, told her father about this amazing success story. Tim Wendel soon discovered that many of the doctors at the forefront of this effort cared for his brother at Roswell Park in Buffalo, New York. Wendel went in search of this extraordinary group, interviewing Lucius Sinks, James Holland, Donald Pinkel, and others in the field. If there were a Mount Rushmore for cancer research, they would be on it.Despite being ostracized by their medical peers, these doctors developed modern-day chemotherapy practices and invented the blood centrifuge machine, helping thousands of children live longer lives. Part family memoir and part medical narrative, Cancer CrossingsTrade ReviewBoth informative and compassionate, Wendel's book celebrates his brother's life and serves as a testament to the commitment of doctors who went above and beyond expectations to transform a death sentence into a survivable disease. A sensitive and thoughtful excavation of a painful period in the author's life. * Kirkus Reviews *Responds brilliantly to Sontag’s decades-old call for new metaphors, new ways of imagining cancer.... Wendel approaches an emotional and highly fraught topic with gentleness and compassion for the reader. * Washington Independent Review of Books *This fine book combines dual pleasures for readers: it's a heartfelt excavation of a painful stretch in the author's life and a history of a seminal period in oncology.... This compelling book is highly recommended for readers of The ASCO Post. * The ASCO Post *

University of North Texas Press,U.S. Probably Someday Cancer: Genetic Risk and
Book SynopsisAfter learning that she inherited a BRCA2 genetic mutation that put her at high risk for breast and ovarian cancer, Kim Horner's doctors urged her to consider having a double mastectomy. But how do you decide whether to have a surgery to remove your breasts to reduce your risk for a disease you don't have and may never get? Horner shares her struggle to answer that question in Probably Someday Cancer. The mother of a one-year-old boy, she wanted to do whatever would give her the best odds of being around for her son and protect her from breast cancer, which killed her grandmother and great-grandmother in their 40s. Which would give her the best chance at a long healthy life: a double mastectomy or frequent screenings to try to catch any cancer early? The answers weren't that simple. Based on extensive research, interviews, and personal experience, Horner writes about how and why she ultimately opted for a double mastectomy—the same decision actress Angelina Jolie made for a similar genetic mutation—and the surprising diagnosis that followed. The book explores difficult truths that get overshadowed by upbeat messages about early detection and survivorship—the fact that screenings can miss cancers and that even early-stage breast cancers can spread and become fatal. Probably Someday Cancer is about the author's efforts to push past her fear and anxiety. This book can help anyone facing hereditary risk of breast and ovarian cancer feel less alone and make informed decisions to protect their health and end the devastation that hereditary cancer has caused for generations in so many families.Trade ReviewWith the ease and comfort of a trusted friend, Kim Horner expertly takes you through her personal journey, sharing her thoughts and evolution around the difficult decisions that she had to make about genetic counseling, testing, and risk management. This is a moving and candid memoir."" - Sue Friedman, Executive Director of FORCE

University Press of Mississippi Understanding Colon Cancer
Book SynopsisFor decades, while other cancers grabbed the headlines, colorectal cancer was quietly ignored. The lifetime risk of colorectal cancer in the general population is 2.5 to 5 percent. This means that twenty-five to fifty out of one thousand people will be stricken by this disease. Although data show that in America colorectal cancer incidence and mortality have been waning in recent decades, cancers of the colon and rectum still cause approximately 56,000 deaths annually. About 140,000 new cases are diagnosed each year. It is plainly evident that colon cancer constitutes a large portion of all new cancer cases, a little more than 10 percent. It is the fourth most frequent type. For the lay reader wishing to know more about this disease that has become more prominent in public attention, Understanding Colon Cancer gives concise information and explanation. It covers fundamental knowledge about occurrence, carcinogenesis, genetics, diagnosis, staging, prognosis, and treatment, as well as forecasting the kinds of diagnostic tests and treatments that may be developed. It reviews demographics, high-risk conditions, the sequence from bowel polyps to cancer, polyposis syndromes predisposing people to colorectal cancer, and the genetics of the disease. Discussed in full detail are the warning signs of the disease and the tests used for screening and diagnosis (fecal occult blood test, barium enema, sigmoidoscopy, and colonoscopy). The stages of the disease are examined, along with theories of how colon cancer spreads. Two chapters focus on treatments, including surgery and chemotherapy. An entire chapter devoted to early detection and prevention discusses standard ap-proaches, as well as such new or emerging strategies as vitamins, drugs, and genetic screening. What lies in the future for diagnostic testing and therapy? Understanding Colon Cancer concludes with discussion that forecasts the potential of genetic screening and treatment, of ""virtual colonoscopy,"" and of new chemotherapeutic drugs, vaccines, and monoclonal antibodies.Table of ContentsWho gets colon cancer and why -- The colon -- How colon cancer develops -- The "look" of colon cancer -- The "feel" of colon cancer -- Stages and prognosis of colon cancer -- Surgical treatment of colon cancer -- Treatment of later stages of colon cancer -- Prevention -- The future.

Thieme Medical Publishers Inc Lung Cancer Screening
Book SynopsisLung cancer is the leading cause of cancer-related death among men and women in the U.S. and worldwide. For many decades, lung cancer was the sole cancer among the deadly four without an evidence-based screening method for decreasing mortality. This changed in November 2011, when findings from the National Lung Cancer Screening Trial showed low-dose lung CT screening was more efficacious in reducing deaths in high-risk individuals than conventional radiography. As such, an ever-increasing number of health organizations now recommend this screening protocol. Lung Cancer Screening by Mark Parker and esteemed VCU Health colleagues, fulfills the dire need for a comprehensive guide explaining the crucial aspects of lung cancer screenings. The first two chapters lay a foundation with discussion of lung cancer epidemiology and risk factors beyond cigarette smoking. Subsequent chapters cover the fundamentals, with clinical pearls on setting up a successful lung cancer screening program, patient eligibility criteria, imaging variances of tumors in the lungs, screening pros and cons, and interpreting/reporting screening results. The evolution and future of lung cancer screenings Detection and management of unexpected incidental pulmonary and non-pulmonary findings Discussion of test cases utilizing the Lung-RADSTM risk-stratifying system for low-dose chest CT screenings Benefits and potential harms associated with mass lung cancer screening programs including false positive, false negative, and over-diagnosis rates This state-of-the-art guide is essential reading for radiologists, oncologists, pulmonologists, and internists. It is a must-have bookshelf reference for hospital radiology and oncology departments, in particular for those setting up new lung cancer screening programs.Table of Contents1 Lung Cancer Epidemiology 2 Risk Factors for Lung Cancer 3 Evolution of Lung Cancer Screening 4 Lung Cancer Screening Pros and Cons 5 Variable Imaging Presentations of Lung Cancer 6 Lung Cancer–Screening Results Reporting 7 Detection and Management of Unexpected Incidental Pulmonary and Nonpulmonary Findings 8 Elements of a Successful Lung Cancer–Screening Program 9 Future of Lung Cancer Screening 10 Test Cases: Applying Lung CT Screening Reporting and Data System (Lung-RADS)

American Registry of Pathology Tumors of the Intestines
Book SynopsisThere have been many advances in the pathology of intestinal tumours since the publication of the Third Series Intestines Fascicle in 2003, but many of the foundations of intestinal tumour diagnosis remain tried and true. Tubular adenomas are still tubular adenomas, but better understanding of serrated polyps has been a key advance in the years since the publication of the Third Series volume. Additionally, developments in molecular biology of colorectal carcinoma have allowed for targeted therapy and refinements to our evaluation of Lynch syndrome, which was termed hereditary nonpolyposis colorectal carcinoma (HNPCC) in the past. Our understanding of other polyposis syndromes has similarly blossomed in the past 15 years. Neuroendocrine tumours have been reclassified in the 2010 World Health Organization classification of gastrointestinal tumours. The molecular basis of gastrointestinal stromal tumours of the intestines has been a subject of great interest as well.In producing this update, this group of authors has enjoyed working together in gathering images and information to update this edition of the Intestines atlas. In doing so, we stand on the shoulders of giants before us, namely Drs. Robert H. Riddell, Robert E. Petras, Geraint T. Williams, and Leslie H. Sobin. While many areas of intestinal tumour pathology are without controversy, the classification and nomenclature for appendiceal tumours remain a subject of debate, including among ourselves. We have attempted to offer information on the various divergent viewpoints where they exist for this topic and others. Our efforts have been synergistic, and we hope that readers will enjoy the many interesting illustrations that we were able to amass.

The molecular revolution leading to effective targeted therapies and breakthroughs in immunotherapy for lung cancer have led to novel approaches incorporating the concept of personalized medicine for patients who historically had little hope. These advances have strengthened the place of pathologists to play a central role in the multidisciplinary team that is now needed to properly diagnose and manage lung cancer patients.

CavanKerry Press But I Still Have My Fingerprints
Book SynopsisPoems centered on survival and perseverance in the face of long-term illness. Delivered a diagnosis of acute myeloid leukemia with a ten percent prognosis for survival, Dr. Dianne Silvestri surrenders her white coat for a hospital gown. Aided by her attentive medical team, family, and friends, she navigates the surreal world of chemotherapy, stem cell transplantation, and subsequent threats from graft-versus-host disease and serious infections of her compromised immune system. But I Still Have My Fingerprints speaks to the difficulties of “surviving survival.” With a clear eye for irony and analogy and a commitment to curiosity and truth, Silvestri writes through her struggles and victories. She gives us poems with unique perspectives, fresh images, and unquenchable optimism, in her perseverance to redefine life beyond what was lost.Trade Review“Silvestri’s fine lyric poems are written with the clear vision of the physician who herself becomes the patient with a serious illness (‘beached / my white coat surrendered’). She travels with honesty and courage her ‘long essential / diversion’ from the everyday of her life. There is the night phone call with bad news (‘I endure for the verdict at dawn’), followed by the complicated journey through pain, treatments, fears, losses, consolations, leading to a ‘first-ditch list’ of hopes. An inspiring, merciful, beautifully-written collection.” * Ann Taylor, author of 'Sortings' *"Dianne Silvestri, MD, a poet as well as a retired dermatologist, has provided readers with the emotionally moving and artistically creative story of her cancer diagnosis, treatment, and survivorship... Springer Nature Switzerland AG Tumor Suppressor Par-4: Role in Cancer and Other
Book SynopsisPar-4 is a naturally occurring tumor suppressor. Studies have indicated that overexpression of Par-4 selectively induces apoptosis in cancer cells while leaving normal, health, cells unaffected. Mechanisms contributing to this cancer-selective action of Par-4 have been associated with PKA activation of intracellular Par-4 in cancer cells or GRP78 expression primarily on the surface of cancer cells. On the other hand, endogenous Par-4 sensitizes cells to the action of a broad range of apoptotic inducers acting via the extrinsic and intrinsic pathways. A number of binding partners of Par-4 have been identified and shown to regulate Par-4 function in cancer and other diseases, such as Alzheimer’s and major depression. Recent studies have recognized a number of natural products, dietary supplements, synthetic molecules and FDA-approved drugs that induce the secretion of Par-4 protein to cause apoptosis in primary or metastatic tumors, one of which is in clinical trials. More than 50 different laboratories worldwide are involved in Par-4 based research of this unique protein that has progressed from the bench to clinical trials. This second, companion volume will provide a comprehensive overview of Par-4’s role in cancer and other diseases. Chapters are written by leading researchers, and will be useful for a broad audience across the scientific community, particularly students and trainees, who are the next generation of scientists and clinicians to participate in new studies and discoveries on Par-4.Table of ContentsIntroductionPart 1Chapter 1. Springer Nature Switzerland AG Depression, Burnout and Suicide in Physicians:
Book SynopsisThis book provides a reference and contextual basis for depression, burnout and suicide among oncology and other medical professionals. Oncology as a medical subspecialty is at a unique apex of this crisis. While the same pressures in medicine certainly apply to oncologists, oncology is particularly stressful as a changing field with diverse patient and societal expectations for outcomes. In addition to experiencing the stress of caring for patients that could succumb to their cancer diagnoses, these professionals are regularly confronted with an onslaught of new medical information and a landscape that is changing at a breakneck pace. These are just a few factors involved in the increasing rates of burnout among oncologists as well as other medcial professionals. By addressing a gap in identifying mental health problems among health care professionals, this book sheds light on mental health problems and suicide among physicians. Importantly, this book is a call to action of the professional and administrative organizations to work on improving mental health of physicians. Anxiety and depression affect not only the individual doctor but also patient care. Given the increasing attention to these issues along with limited yet applicable data regarding how to address these issues, the text aims to bring the latest data face to face with consensus opinion and can be used to ultimately enhance oncologic and psychiatric practices. Written by experts in the field, Depression, Burnout and Suicide in Physicians: Insights from Oncology and Other Medical Professions aims to significantly increase awareness and contribute to understanding the necessity of preventive measures on individual, family, and care givers levels.Table of Contents1 The problem of Burnout, Depression, and Suicide in Physicians. Springer Nature Switzerland AG Management of the Breast and Axilla in the
Book SynopsisOver the last several decades breast cancer management has made great strides in the improvement of oncologic treatment outcomes, particularly so in patients with early stage disease. While wide-spread access to screening resulting in early detection is undoubtedly to be credited for this trend, at the same time, the management of breast cancer has evolved to be an intricate multidisciplinary collaboration between breast imagers, surgeons, medical oncologists and radiation oncologist. As a result, with better mutual understanding of multidisplinary goals and challenges, the treatment strategies have become more individualized, with a great emphasis being placed on the intrinsic disease biology. Furthermore, the indications for neoadjuvant systemic therapy have significantly broadened, with a substantial number of patients with early stage breast cancer being able to take advantage of this strategy to decrease the extent of breast surgery they would undergo at its completion. As such, the management of the axilla in these patients has presented with new challenges as well as with new opportunities to scale down on the extent of local therapy and, consequently, its toxicity. This text will provide a comprehensive, state-of-the art review of this field, and will serve as a valuable resource for clinicians (surgeons, medical oncologists, radiation oncologists) and researchers with an interest in breast cancer. The book will review novel and evoling strategies in neoadjuvant systemic therapy forn early stage breast cancer, provide new perspectives about appropriate axillary imaging in anticipation of neoadjuvant systemic therapy, and describe new data on innovative surgical techniques and Radiation Oncology concepts designed to deescalate the extent and toxicity of local therapy while insuring oncologic safety. Several landmark clinical trials have been published in the last few years and will be placed in context with respect to current management. Integration of novel diagnostic and interventional breast imaging, local therapy (surgery and radiation) with contemporary systemic therapy will also be discussed. This text will serve as a very useful resource for physicians and researchers dealing with, and interested in, this challenging field. It will provide a concise yet comprehensive summary of the current status of the field that will help guide patient management and stimulate investigative efforts. All chapters will be written by experts in their fields and will include the most up to date scientific and clinical information.Table of ContentsEvolution of the indications for neoadjuvant systemic therapy.- Defining response.- Imaging of the breast.- Imaging of the axilla and approach to node-negative vs. node-positive disease at presentation.- Guidelines for imaging during neoadjuvant systemic therapy.- Neoadjuvant systemic therapy based on the underlying tumor biology.- Adjuvant vs. neoadjuvant systemic therapy.- Molecular testing and personalized neoadjuvant treatment.- Pre-and post-neoadjuvant systemic therapy imaging assessment.- Surgical management of the axilla in node-negative and node-positive disease at diagnosis.- Surgical considerations and expectations in patients receiving neoadjuvant hormonal therapy and neoadjuvant chemotherapy.- Postmastectomy radiation considerations in patients receiving neoadjuvant chemotherapy.- Pathologic evaluation in neoadjuvant systemic therapy setting.- Guidelines for Neoadjuvant systemic therapy.- Ongoing Clinical studies and future direction.
