Book SynopsisIn "The Open", contemporary Italian philosopher Giorgio Agamben considers the ways in which the "human" has been thought of as either a distinct and superior type of animal, or a kind of being that is essentially different from animal altogether.Trade Review"[The Open] turns to perhaps the most basic distinction of existence: that between human beings and animals. The thin volume provides an impressive historical survey of the problem, offering a dizzying scope of debate over the nature of animality, including expositions of figures as diverse as Thomas Aquinas, Georges Bataille, Heidegger, Alexander Kojève, Benjamin, and the German zoologist Jakob von Uexküll."—Radical Philosophy ReviewTable of Contents@fmct:Contents @toc4:Translator's Note iii @toc2:1 Theromorphous 00 2 Acephalous 00 3 Snob 00 4 Mysterium disiunctionis 00 5 Physiology of the Blessed 00 6 Cognitio experimentalis 00 7 Taxonomies 00 8 Without Rank 00 9 Anthropological Machine 00 10 Umwelt 00 11 Tick 00 12 Poverty in World 00 13 The Open 00 14 Profound Boredom 00 15 World and Earth 00 16 Animalization 00 17 Anthropogenesis 00 18 Between 00 19 Desuvrement 000 20 Outside of Being 000 @toc4:Notes 000 Index 000 Library of Congress Subject Headings for this publication: Philosophical anthropology, Human beings Animal nature

    Stanford University Press Legal Ethics

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisExamining legal ethics within the framework of modern practice, this book identifies two important ethical issues that all lawyers confront: the difference between the role of lawyers and the role of judges in pursuing justice, and the conflicting responsibilities lawyers have to their clients and to the legal system more broadly.Trade Review"Professors Hazard and Dondi have a very large understanding of the realities of contemporary law practice throughout the developed world. Their conversations with lawyers, judges, and government officials provide richness and depth to their analysis. Specialists and professionals worldwide will find this book stimulating and welcome." —Roger Cramton, Cornell University School of Law"This pioneering study seeks to bridge the gap between common law and civil law standards of lawyer behavior. Beneath the differences in the systems, the authors trace similar responses to problems that legal practitioners face in various nations. Their work will improve transnational understanding and foster the transnational practice of law." —John Leubsdorf, Rutgers School of Law, Newark"Weaving together law, philosophy, ethics, political science, and history, the authors have created an excellent description and discussion of these issues and the importance of legal ethics in a system that purports to mete out justice."—CHOICE"...Offers a fruitful avenue for deploying comparative research in service of promoting positive change."—Law and Politics Book Review

Book SynopsisThis collection of essays and interviews, some previously unpublished and almost all of which appear in English for the first time, encompasses the political and ethical thinking of Jacques Derrida over 30 years.Trade Review"Edited and translated by Elizabeth Rottenberg, this collection is particularly valuable in two respects: first, nearly all of the interviews and essays included in this collection have never been published in English, and they offer insight into Derrida's work that those of us whose French is mediocre have not had the chance to appreciate; second, and perhaps more importantly, there is also an interesting conceptual integrity to this book that revolves around the problem of negotiation as it comes to bear on both ethics and politics (and on the process of writing itself).—Irene E. Book SynopsisTwo Leggings was one of the last Crow Warriors. From 1919 to 1923 he told his story of Crow life and wars to an ethnologist with the Museum of the American Indian. This title tells a poignant story of the end of traditional Crow life and attitudes, which Two Leggings saw ending with the last warfare rather than the death of the buffalo.Trade Review"Two Leggings . . . was one of the last Crow Warriors. From 1919 to 1923 he told his story of Crow life and wars to William Wildschut, an ethnologist with the Museum of the American Indian . . . . This is the poignant story of the end of traditional Crow life and attitudes, which Two Leggings saw ending with the last warfare rather than the death of the buffalo."—Pacific Historian"This is the story of Two Leggings’ desire for fame, his rise as a warrior, and his efforts to achieve a spiritual vision. He takes us along on buffalo hunts, war parties against the Piegans, and horse stealing raids against the Piegans and Sioux. His obsession to become a chief and famous warrior drove him to repeated forays against enemy tribes for scalps and horses. He relates the religious relationship between vision fasts, medicine bundles, and a war raid’s outcome, sun dances in which performers pierced their breast muscles with wooden skewers, and wife stealing between rival warrior societies. . . . It is a remarkable story."—Chicago Tribune"This is a rare piece of Americana—a first-person account of the psychological, religious, and social life of a nineteenth century Indian. The dramatic recital is a real contribution to our native biography, history, and ethnology, and an important treatise in a fascinating but curiously neglected field."—Baltimore Sun

Book SynopsisG W F Hegel (1770-1831), the influential German philosopher, believed that human history was advancing spiritually and morally according to God's purpose. This title notes the complex and controversial history of Hegel's text.Trade Review"Hegel's Geschichte der Philosophie was one of the grand products of the renaissance in historical learning that took place in early nineteenth-century Germany. . . . Hegel remains relevant today for his recognition that any self-critical philosophy must include a knowledge of its own history. A self-aware philosopher, Hegel firmly believed, knew where his ideas came from and their social and cultural context. . . . This is still the only available translation of all three volumes of Hegel's history."—Frederick C. Beiser, The Fate of Reason: German Philosophy from Kant to Fichte“The main reason why Hegel will remain worthy of study lies in his incomparable gathering together of the whole range of human experience into vital connection with what is best in that experience. . . . He is, without doubt, the Aristotle of our post-Renaissance world.”—J. N. Findlay, Hegel: A Re-examination

Book SynopsisThe first book to address specific connections between the Boer War and the opening months of World War I, Spencer Jones's fresh interpretation adds to the historiography of both wars by emphasizing the continuity between them.Trade ReviewIn this well-written, convincing study, Spencer Jones admirably demonstrates how the British Expeditionary Force was shaped by the lessons of the Boer War. He shows that the Boer War period is crucial in terms of military history and the transformation of ideas, and that it has been overlooked by historians of World War I for too long. This is an important work."" - Stephen M. Miller, author of Volunteers on the Veld: Britain's Citizen Soldiers and the South African War, 1899 - 1902""Spencer Jones's thorough research, combined with a full awareness of the existing literature, makes this a valuable contribution to our understanding of the lessons learnt from the Boer War by the British Army and their importance for British tactical reforms before the Great War. As the author succinctly proves, the tactical foundations of the victories of 1914 were laid down by the bitter experience of the Boer War and subsequent reforms. Reading Jones's work is an immense pleasure."" - Fransjohan Pretorius, author of Historical Dictionary of the Anglo-Boer War and The Great Escape of the Boer Pimpernel: Christiaan de Wet - The Making of a LegendFrom Boer War to World War is on the must-read list for anyone with a serious interest in twentieth-century British military history - Journal of British Studies

  • Not Quite Shamans

Cornell University Press Not Quite Shamans

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisAn ethnography of recent societal transformations in Mongolia and their impact on local belief systems.Trade ReviewNot Quite Shamans is a beautifully written, rich, and detailed ethnographic account of a remote corner of postsocialist Mongolia. Empathetic but never apologetic, Pedersen presents a balanced account of what was certainly a very arduous, evenlife-threatening, fieldwork research.... [N]ot Quite Shamans will certainly become a seminal text, not only for Mongolian and Inner Asian specialists but indeed as a detailed and perceptive analysis of postsocialism and shamanism. -- Franck Billé * Current Anthropology *A fascinating journey through the hitherto little remarked complexities of post-socialist rural Mongolia, where formerly suppressed and semi-destroyed shamanic and Buddhist traditions have resurfaced to compete with one another and also with modernity.... Composed with scholarly erudition, thoughtful reflection, and true storyteller acumen, this engaging account fills a significant void in understanding contemporary Mongolian society. Its wealth of useful ethnographic and linguistic detail offers much to anthropologists and social historians alike. Summing up: Highly recommended. * Choice *In this book, the author claims that the agsan ataman is a typical image of a rural village in postsocialist Mongolia. As the instrument of occult forces whose manifestation is beyond his control, the agsan person is like a shaman, but not quite (p. 4). The author calls his study 'shamanism without shamans', because he studied not proper shamans but half-shamans and shaman-like cases.... [T]his work is an enormous contribution to studies deconstructing shamanism. -- Bumochir Dulam * Nationalities Papers *It is tricky to define anything using a negative, especially in a book title. Yet Morten Pedersen has succeeded in making his theme of perpetual transitional instability in Mongolia one that centers on the concept of not quite shamans. He argues that those Mongolian shamans of the Darhad region conventionally trained to control dark spirit worlds have all but disappeared, given the repressions and pressures of communists, and before them, Buddhists.... Pedersen's work is a fine contribution to the anthropological literature on Mongolia.... -- Marjorie Mandelstam Balzer * Anthropology and Humanism *Table of ContentsIntroduction 1 Shamanic States 2 The Shamanic Predicament 3 Layered Lands, Layered Minds 4 The Shaman's Two Bodies 5 Mischievous Souls 6 ConclusionBibliography Glossary Index

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisFrancois Villon was the last of the great medieval poets, as important in his own, more limited, sphere as Chaucer or Dante. His fame surpasses that of any other medieval French lyricist in spite of the modest quantity, uneven quality, and often repellent subject-matter of his work. His poems are largely autobiographical, and are rich in their descriptions of thefts, fights, nocturnal prowling, imprisonment, and exile. However, as Barbara Sargent-Baur points outs, when Villon’s work is good, it is very good, indeed unforgettable. His two major works are the Lais, a series of bequests in anticipation of his prudent departure from Paris, and Testament, which is about his primary topic, himself. There have been many translations of Villon’s work into many languages, including English, but this is the first edition of the whole of the corpus utilizing a re-reading of all the manuscript sources and presenting for each poem a single-source text with all emendations ac

Headquarters for the expatriate American writers, the shop was also a favorite stopping-off place for Gide, Valéry, and other faithful international friends and customers."—San Francisco Chronicle"Miss Beach's book is intimate, not scholarly, and thus full of interesting information. Book SynopsisStandardization is one of the defining aspects of modern life, its presence so pervasive that it is usually taken for granted. However cumbersome, onerous, or simply puzzling certain standards may be, their fundamental purpose in streamlining...Trade Review"Standards and Their Stories is an important, well-written, and extraordinarily provocative examination of a part of the world usually hidden from any sort of public view. The authors show how much of what we take for granted is the result of negotiation, compromise, and occasionally coercion. They do so by inventing a suite of new and innovative research methods. As a result, this book is likely to become not only 'the standard' for studies of this sort but also the starting point for new ways of investigating sociotechnical processes."—Lawrence Busch, Michigan State University"I sat down to read the book, read the first page, and paused while my face broke into a smile and a comfortable warm feeling came over my body. Yup, this was going to be a great book. Further reading confirmed the impression. Standards rule our lives. Yeah, standards, that dull, frustrating, topic studied by 'The Society of People Interested in Boring Things.' But this book proves that far from being dull, the stories behind standards are interesting, insightful, and revealing of the workings of bureaucracy. Standards are essential for different stuff made by different companies in different countries to work well together. Whether it is bananas or chocolate, application forms for terrorist training, or the sizes of people's rear ends (critical for airline seats), standards are essential part of life today (all these are covered in the book). This engaging book serves several purposes. It explains much of the history, rationale, and politics of standards. It shows why they have huge social impact, far beyond what most of us realize, often far beyond what was intended. And best of all, it is fun to read."—Don Norman, Northwestern University, author of The Design of Future Things

Book SynopsisChallenging the prevailing wisdom, Straus provides substantial new evidence about local patterns of violence, using original research to assess competing theories about about the causes and dynamics of the genocide.Trade ReviewThe Order of Genocide will be an enduring contribution to our understanding of the Rwandan genocide as well as to theories of ethnic violence and genocides more generally. Although his methods and findings will certainly interest scholars of genocides, violent conflicts, and African area studies, Straus does not obscure his work in specialist language. * Nations and Nationalism *Scott Straus ranks among the finest of the scholars writing in genocide studies. The Order of Genocide is fair-minded, important, and rigorous. Drawing on more than two hundred interviews that he conducted with convicted Rwandan killers, and on many other sources, Straus builds a dynamic process model seeking to explain why and how ordinary people could be mobilized to murder their neighbors in the Rwandan genocide. * African Studies Review *Straus examines the 1994 Rwandan genocide through a social science lens... and his approach yields interesting new insights.... Particularly compelling is his comparison of killers in Rwanda with those of the Holocaust. * Foreign Affairs *Straus shows tenacity and courage in explaining the unthinkable—how otherwise ordinary people could imagine, conceive, and carry out genocide. * Genocide Studies and Prevention *Straus's study is comprehensive, thorough, and cogently and carefully argued. It is altogether an impressive work that is compulsory for specialists and invaluable for students. Straus is a former journalist and his writing is a model of clarity and economy. * Perspectives on Politics *Straus's writing is lucid, the structure of the book is well thought out, and jargon is avoided, making The Order of Genocide accessible to anyone interested in the subject. The book is a versatile toolbox, which will make it a must for anyone aiming to teach Habermas or the transformations of Critical Theory in the last decades. Book SynopsisThe Persian Gulf state of Qatar has fewer than 2 million inhabitants, virtually no potable water, and has been an independent nation only since 1971. Yet its enormous oil and gas wealth has permitted the ruling al Thani family to exert a disproportionately large influence on regional and even international politics. Qatar is, as Mehran Kamrava explains in this knowledgeable and incisive account of the emirate, a tiny giant: although severely lacking in most measures of state power, it is highly influential in diplomatic, cultural, and economic spheres.Kamrava presents Qatar as an experimental country, building a new society while exerting what he calls subtle power. It is both the headquarters of the global media network Al Jazeera and the site of the U.S. Central Command''s Forward Headquarters and the Combined Air Operations Center. Qatar has been a major player during the European financial crisis, it has become a showplace for renowned architects, several U.S. universitieTrade Review"Mehran Kamrava, a well-known expert on the middle East and the Persian Gulf, continues to contribute immensely to the intellectual life of Doha where he has been working since the establishment of Centre for International and Regional Studies at Georgetown University's School of Forgein Service in Qatar. Therefore, his book entitled Qatar: Small State, Big Politics came as no surprise and indeed is very much welcome." -- Erdem Tunçe * Perceptions: Jounral of International Affairs *"Kamrava’s work is one of the first full-scale investigations of the intersections of Qatar’s foreign and domestic policies. This book is an important read for those who want to understand more about a crucial, but relatively understudied, country, as well as for scholars in the fields of rentier theory, state building, and international relations." -- Jocelyn Sage Mitchell, Northwestern University in Qatar * Democratization *"In this impressive book, Mehran Kamrava addresses the remarkable phenomenon of tiny Qatar and whether or not it is likely to become a major regional force. Crucially, he sets Qatar apart from its other resource-rich monarchical neighbors by placing necessary emphasis on its emerging foreign policy." -- Christopher M. Davidson, Durham University, author of After the Sheikhs: The Coming Collapse of the Gulf Monarchies"Mehran Kamrava, who is an established authority on the Persian Gulf, has generated the most readable and analytically rich studies of this subregion with great consistency. It is good to see him turn his sharp eye toward the subregion's most interesting state actor today—namely Qatar. In his brilliant new book on this small but economically dynamic Gulf state, Kamrava provides the reader with a comprehensive analysis of this country's power pyramid and the policy imperatives of its modernizing elite alongside a full analysis of the essence of its 'subtle power,’ indeed 'soft power,’ as he maps what he calls Doha’s `hyperactive’ diplomacy and regional conduct. This book will excite even the keenest observer of the Gulf for its ability to delve deep while also painting the most intricate conceptual canvass for Qatar’s `moment in history.’ Honestly, I read it cover to cover and enjoyed learning something new from its every page! Kamrava never fails to deliver." -- Anoush Ehteshami, author of Dynamics of Change in the Persian Gulf: Political Economy, War and Revolution"This very well-written book uses Qatar as a vehicle to discuss big ideas like the nature of power, state autonomy, and high modernism." -- F. • On Greek Religion

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisA provocative and wide-ranging entrée into the world of ancient Greek religion.Trade ReviewAlthough one might expect a mere survey from the title, Parker delivers far more than a beginners' summary. Rather, this book is a probing exploration of the methodological and interpretive difficulties associated with Greek religion from the eighth through the second centuries BCE.... This work provides a wealth of insights from one of the leading experts in the field. Summing Up: Highly recommended. * Choice *On Greek Religion has all the virtues we have come to appreciate in his writings: a fruitful blend of the factual and theoretical; a simultaneous inclination towards and distrust of categories, schemes, and generalities; scrupulous attention to detail; an awareness of what we do and do not and cannot know about Greek religion; precise and generous but not uncritical discussions of others' views; the integration of literary and epigraphical sources; common sense; and a lively style with touches of whimsy. -- Jon D. Mikalson * The Classical Journal *This book derives from the Townsend Lectures given by Parker at Cornell in 2008, but its style is not noticeably different from that of Parker's two previous books.... Its scope is wider than those two works, both chronologically, dealing with material from the eighth to the second century BC, and geographically, covering the entire Greek world. Its ambition is also greater, in that its seven chapters and five appendices aim to provide an interpretation of Greek religion as a whole.... This is a very important book that everyone working in the field of Greek religion will have to read. -- Hugh Bowden * The Journal of Hellenic Studies *This book is an important step in its author's scholarly journey in the field of ancient Greek religion.... This work is outstandingly well-informed, well-written, clever and also very cautious. -- Vinciane Pirenne-Delforge * Bryn Mawr Classical Review *This work, derived from a series of lectures given by the author at Cornell University in 2008, offers a discussion on a series of central questions in the domain of Greek religion. R. Parker achieves his goal with much maestria in this work, which is proof of an excellent knowledge of Greek religion, both ancient evidence and equal historiography, to which he returns frequently. To enrich his reflections, the author systematically echoes various interpretations of the issues he tackles, thus giving breadth to his analysis. All of these qualities make On Greek Religion an indispensable text for specialists in Ancient Greek religion, who will find in it abundant material for reflection. -- Stéphanie Paul * L'Antiquité Classique *Table of Contents1. Book SynopsisUnderstanding PTSD among today's veterans and how it is handled by the military and VA system.Trade ReviewErin P. Finley creates a compelling account of how to understand PTSD and how to help treat those who suffer from it.... She mixes historical accounts of PTSD as a medical illness with the current understandings of its causes, signs, and evidence-based treatment.... Finley gives us hope and several well thought-out recommendations for preventing and minimizing combat PTSD. -- Kevin M. Bond * Military Review *Finley offers a well-researched and reasoned contribution that explores how the social environments veterans come from and return to when not deployed shape their PTSD experience. The book weaves together empirical research findings with lengthy case studies that show the experience of PTSD across time. This book's most important aspect is the understanding it conveys that PTSD is not only a psychiatric condition, but a socially mediated one as well, shaped by the ways in which the Veterans Affairs health system interacts with and compensates' veterans. Finley's richly textured ethnography demonstrates the many factors that influence the readjustment struggles of returning veterans. She closes the book with a helpful and practical set of suggestions that give it an edge on other works on the topic, many of which fail to treat the issues with Finley's depth and insight.... Summing Up: Highly recommended. * Choice *Finley studies the process by which veterans of current conflicts define and seek treatment for combat-induced PTSD. Because she also seeks to illuminate military culture, she looks at how families cope with returning relatives who now seem like strangers; delves into the history of the Veterans Administration medical system, whose employees are struggling to treat a flood of new patients with limited resources; and chronicles how mental health professionals have defined the problems of veterans, from soldier's heart through combat fatigue to today’s struggles to define PTSD (and, hence, to decide who gets treatment).... A comprehensive look at the subject from many viewpoints. * Library Journal *This is the first major ethnography of PTSD among veterans of America's most recent wars. In Fields of Combat, Erin P. Finley deftly weaves the experiences of these young men and women who have participated in the invasions and occupations of Iraq and Afghanistan into a larger fabric of the U.S. military enterprise, including the clinical responses to a health crisis in treatment and prevention of debilitating traumas of war. How Americans, civilian and military alike, respond to these veterans says as much about the mental health of U.S. society as about them. -- Matthew Gutmann, Brown Universitycoauthor, * Breaking Ranks: Iraq Veterans Speak Out Against the War *Fields of Combat is highly recommended for leaders, persons providing direct care and ancillary services, and administrators involved in the care of active duty or retired service members, as well as for clinicians who work with veterans in community settings. It will be a valuable resource for family members to assist them in understanding and working with loved ones experiencing combat-related PTSD. * JAMA *Table of ContentsIntroduction 1. Book SynopsisBecoming German tells the story of the largest and earliest mass movement of German-speaking immigrants to America, the Palatine migration of 1709, tracking their journey from Germany to London to New York City and into the frontier areas of New York.Trade ReviewBecoming German nicely details the complex development of ethnic identity in eighteenth-century British America. With engaging prose and a straightforward style, Otterness demonstrates how people from a variety of religious, political, and cultural backgrounds re-shaped the definition others imposed on them and forged a commonly held and unique identity.... Becoming German significantly broadens our understanding of early American identity formation and adds welcome nuance and complexity to our image of cultural encounters in British America. -- Rosalind J. Beiler * Journal of American Ethnic History *Otterness discusses the impoverished families of southwestern Germany who, in 1709, migrated to England mistakenly believing that Queen Anne would give them farmland in America. Following long delays, they ultimately reached the colony of New York.... Once there,... they doggedly struggled to obtain farmsteads, defying the governor, moving from the work camps, and buying land from the Mohawks instead of from English landholders.... Colonial and New York State historians will enjoy this interesting, well-researched narrative. Highly recommended. * Choice *Otterness paints a vivid picture of the diversity and the resultant dissension among Germans from various parts of the Holy Roman Empire.... The text is well-written and easy to read.... This book is highly recommended. It is a wonderful addition to the knowledge and understanding of this first mass migration of German-speaking people to America. Descendants of the immigrants should read this book. Others will learn and explore the complexities of migration, the problems in acclimation in strange surroundings, and the creation of an American identity. -- Clara Harsh * The Palatine Immigrant *There are a number of strengths in Otterness's book. First, his chronicle of the 1709 migrations from beginning to end, detailing origins and settlement patterns using his database, is impressive. He provides extensive detail on the London phase of the migrations, including how difficult conditions were for the Germans and what a public political problem this became for Londoners. Otterness also shows how the Palatines' problems of survival and dealing with difficult authorities continued after reading New York. And, in addition to discerning the beginnings of 'becoming German' in Europe, not America, Otterness shows that many immigrants interacted significantly with Mohawks on the Schoharie. -- Aaron Spencer Fogleman * American Historical Review *This fast-paced and thoroughly researched book tells the story of the migration of 3,000 Germans from the Rhineland, who settled in upstate New York in the early eighteenth century, a fascinating episode in the peopling of British North America.... Although they dispersed in scattered settlements, over the years, Otterness concludes, the Palatines remained distinctively German. While they integrated into American public life, they continued to marry within the group, kept German as their primary language, and maintained German customs. -- Bertrand Van Ruymbeke * Itinerario *Table of ContentsIntroductionChapter 1.
