  • The Battle for Boston

Fordham University Press The Battle for Boston

    2 in stock

Book SynopsisHow Mayor Ray Flynn's leadership and a coalition of activists transformed Boston, challenging established powers and setting new precedents for urban governance. The Battle for Boston captures the remarkable era under Mayor Ray Flynn, whose election in 1983 marked the beginning of a profound shift in the city's political and social landscape. Don Gillis, a Flynn senior advisor, chronicles the inspiring journey of a city that dared to challenge the entrenched power brokersincluding developers, landlords, and banking industry leadersthrough powerful grassroots campaigns. Gillis provides a vivid portrayal of the political dynamics and the coalition of community organizers, neighborhood leaders, and residents that played a pivotal role in rejecting the business-backed growth machine and the city's historically divisive racial politics. This book charts the strategic battles fought within the corridors of power and on the streets and highlights the substantial impact these movements had on the city's governance and power dynamics. In a historic turn, the election of Michelle Wu in 2021Boston's first female mayor of colorillustrates the lasting influence of Flynn's progressive policies. Wu's victory on a similarly progressive platform underscores the enduring relevance of the legacy left by Flynn's administration, signaling a hopeful future for more inclusive and effectively governed cities. The Battle for Boston poses a critical inquiry: Can cities truly embrace progressivism and govern effectively in the 21st century? This qualitative narrative study is a testament to the possibility of such governance, driven by the indomitable spirit of those who strive for a fair and equitable society.

  • Shifting the Lens in History Education

Harvard Education PR Shifting the Lens in History Education

Book SynopsisA persuasive collection that considers how centering the knowledge and perspectives of historically marginalized groups enriches K-12 history teaching and learning InShifting the Lens in History Education, Maribel Santiago and Tadashi Dozono and a team of educational scholars call for history education that honors and respects the past and future agency of historically marginalized communities. This collection encourages history educators to extend their focus past conventional, inquiry-driven learning; to center the ways racially and ethnically marginalized communities preserve history; and to uphold Black, Latinx, Indigenous, Arab, and Asian American student knowledge in the classroom. In these mind-expanding essays, contributors offer context and a theoretical framework for their proposed paradigm shift in social studies and history pedagogy. They invite educators to consider the full emotional complexity of humans throughout history to avoid teaching racialized emotions. And they demonstrate how non-traditional approaches to history such as storytelling, oral history, and testimonios, which are often linked to anticolonial practices, complicate dominant narratives and support both historical inquiry and healing. Taken together, these essays show that approaches to history and ways of knowing practiced in historically marginalized communities are expansive, legitimate, community-oriented, and restorative. They call for educators committed to social justice to embrace racial and ethnic community knowledge in tandem with traditional, inquiry-driven history education to engage in more holistic, nuanced understandings of the past.

Book SynopsisMegiddo VII reports in meticulous detail the archaeological findings from two elite, interrelated tombs from the Late Bronze I period, both exceptionally preserved and richly furnished: Tomb 16/H/50, a monumental masonry-constructed chamber tomb from the Middle Bronze III, and Burial 16/H/45, a simpler pit within the former's mausoleum. Carefully excavated under unusually pristine conditions, these tombs afford a unique opportunity for in-depth study. Directed by experts from Tel Aviv University and supported by an international consortium of institutions, the excavation employed cutting-edge techniques, documentation, and analytical methods to capture, preserve, and study archaeological data. Presented in twenty-four chapters, the report deploys an arsenal of archaeological scientific methods on a targeted area of the mound. It chronicles the architectural and artifactual finds and situates them within their broader temporal, spatial, and cultural contexts. Presenting fresh insights into the funerary practices and societal structures of the Middle and Late Bronze periods, this volume is indispensable for researchers in the fields of Near Eastern archaeology and archaeological science and for those interested in the complexities of ancient funerary practices.

  • Pennsylvania State University Press Wenamuns Prophetic Mission

    2 in stock

Book SynopsisThe Story of Wenamun is an Egyptian travelogue from the turn of the first millennium BCE that is enlivened by visits to exotic ports of call, piracy, intrigue, and attempted murder. It is also an underappreciated example of the intercultural exchange of theological ideas in the early Iron Age. In Wenamun's Prophetic Mission, Christopher B. Hays identifies striking similarities between theological rhetoric in the ancient Egyptian story of Wenamun and that of the Hebrew prophets. Hays challenges scholars of the ancient Mediterranean to reimagine the cultural milieu that gave rise to Iron Age Yahwism and ultimately to biblical monotheism, arguing that the Hebrew Bible's theocratic and monotheizing rhetoric owes more to the influence of Egypt than is often recognized. Along the way, Hays makes Wenamun accessible to biblical scholars and non-Egyptologists with the clarity of presentation that his acclaimed sourcebook, Hidden Riches, brought to other ancient Near Eastern texts. This volume includes a thorough survey of past scholarship on Wenamun as well as an introduction to the historical situation of Egypt, the Levant, and the Mediterranean at the beginning of the first millennium BCE. This provocative new study makes an important contribution to academic discourse on ancient Near Eastern prophecy and will appeal to scholars of the Hebrew Bible and the ancient Mediterranean.
