  • Tree Story

Johns Hopkins University Press Tree Story

    20 in stock

Book SynopsisTrade ReviewTrouet writes that the purpose of this book is to excite people about science, and she succeeds by creating an engaging, credible work sprinkled with anecdotes . . . With this brief, accessible look at the wisdom of tree rings, Trouet draws readers into a narrative that clearly displays her joy for her work and offers some fun with word play.—Library JournalAn accomplished and globally recognized dendroclimatologist, Trouet is knowledgeable across diverse fields of science and is a talented writer and engaging storyteller. Drawing from a diversity of tree-ring research and interdisciplinary collaborations, Trouet chronicles fascinating examples of how dendrochronology helps to answer questions about past environments and human history.—ScienceIf you enjoy great science reads, add this one to your list. Now.—Nature's Cool Green ScienceTree Story is a sublime example of what booksellers have lately started calling smart non-fiction: sophisticated academic books for a broad audience (often published by American university presses) that are just a few notches above the yuck- or wow-factor of more generic popular science. The excellent clarity and pacing that Trouet brings to this fascinating topic meant I that tore through Tree Story in a day. If I added ratings to my reviews, this book would be a ten out of ten. Already, this is a very strong contender for my book of the year—Inquisitive BiologistA persuasive, entertaining explanation of how the codes contained in tree rings reveal the wide-ranging effects of climate change.—Shelf AwarenessTree Story gives readers a lively, sometimes visceral feel for Trouet's work.—Science NewsTree Story is everything I had hoped it would be: intelligent, accessible, witty, and captivating—a global adventure spanning millennia and embracing a bevy of unexpected topics, all resulting from the study of tree rings.—Washington Independent Review of BooksIn her delightful Tree Story, dendrochronologist Valerie Trouet obliterates the layman's notion that tree rings provide little more information than a tree's age. What trees can teach seems limited only by science's ability to extract the information.—Foreword ReviewsPart memoir, part field diary, part lucid and engaging science communication, Tree Story moves from the finest micron-level of individual tree rings to the deep geological time of the planet and the world-wrapping forces of its climate. Trouet's account of her career, far from what we might imagine to be the dull work of counting tree rings, reads like an exciting adventure story, complete with far-flung locales, the ridiculous macho pretensions of male coworkers, and the ever present thrum of the ancient magic that seems to emanate from the trees themselves.—Lady ScienceThe chapters spill over with information and would be overwhelming were it not for the book's organization, the images and digital illustrations, and the author's ability to share her scholarly adventures with such evident enjoyment.—Seattle Book ReviewEnjoyable and accessible. Drawing on a rich array of examples from around the world, the lively book is full of thought-provoking discussion of our relationships with trees and the climate.—Current World ArchaeologyTree Story is a work of science, of graphs and statistics. But Trouet recounts too the personal thrill of discovery, the camaraderie and competitiveness of academic science, and the arduous nature of her research.—The SpectatorTree Story offers a passionate yet clear-eyed introduction into the field of dendrochronology.—Cincinnati Public Radio NewsTree Story is well-written, often with great phrasing and much humour, and gives a welcome insight into the people and personalities behind the science . . . [It's] another example of great science communication, often dealing with quite technical matters, but in an accessible way for both the non-specialist scientist and the intelligent lay person. But it's not just about great story-telling, Tree Story has much of pedagogic value as well, and would make a great text for a plants-and-people course.—Botany OneHere, we are taken on a fascinating journey through history, as remembered by the trees of the world. Trouet weaves together stories from the field and the lab to demonstrate that there is far more to studying tree rings than counting them.—BBC Wildlife MagazineIt's all in the tree rings—and trees don't lie.—The Daily ExpressThe book has already been reviewed and recommended in many places, and highlighted as an excellent work of popular science. Here I would like to recommend the book to be used as a textbook for students being exposed to scientific ideas and methods, to arouse their curiosity and show them how diverse fields like natural science and human history interact.—Tree-Ring ResearchValerie Trouet's book is an excellent starting point to explore the relationships between trees and people and to look at the expectations and disappointments on the way to developing a way to communicate not only about but also with trees.—Edge EffectsIf tree rings are the scribes of history, Valerie Trouet is their chief scrivener. Highly recommended.—Plant Science Bulletin[Tree Story's] geeky enthusiasm . . . makes the entire book such a pleasure to read.—Rain Taxi Review of BooksTree Story should be well-received by a variety of readers, professional and non-professional alike . . . The book is well-written and designed, with good pacing that intermixes entertaining and informative narrative in focused chapters that are not overlong.—Maritime Archaeological and Historical SocietyIn this primer, a dendrochronologist explains how tree rings reveal the past via a science that exists 'at the nexus of ecology, climatology and human history.'—New York Times (New & Noteworthy)Table of Contents1. • RelationalCultural Therapy

    American Psychological Association RelationalCultural Therapy

    10 in stock

Book SynopsisIn this third edition, Judith Jordan explores the history, theory, and practice of relationship-centered, culturally oriented psychotherapy as a tool for building meaningful connections in a world of increasing isolation. This essential primer is ideal for students and practitioners alike, guiding them through the ins and outs of relational–cultural therapy (RCT). New to this edition is real-world research and guidelines related to distance learning, working with marginalized groups, and working towards social justice. Jordan built RCT upon the understanding that people need social and emotional connections to flourish. In a digital era full of uncertainty and disconnection, it is more important than ever to mend relational resilience and reestablish positive, growth-fostering relationships. The therapist therefore works to deepen their bond with the client to help them build similar bonds outside of therapy. They work with the client’s relational images based on positive and negative experiences to manage expectations and teach relationship-building skills.

Book SynopsisA bold new metaphysics that explores how all things—from atoms to green chiles, cotton to computers—interact with, perceive, and experience one anotherTrade Review"This book needs to be read by many different audiences since it is not only fascinating but also of considerable significance. As the task of thinking through things as actors in their own right according to Ian Bogost’s maxim ‘all things exist, yet they do not exist equally’ becomes a real intellectual project so the implications of this stance start to multiply. In turn, they begin to produce the outlines of a landscape in which things aren’t just are. Rather, they form an active cartography which is always and everywhere—an alien ontography." —Nigel Thrift, Vice Chancellor, University of Warwick"Engaging, unpretentious, and often beautiful."—PopMatters.com"Alien Phenomenology is worth a read simply because it is innovative, cleverly written, and bold."—Indie Street Radio"Bogost goes a step further to describe not just what [object-oriented ontology] is, but how one would go about practicing it."—Experimental Progress, blog"The possibilities of Bogost’s theory applied to fine arts, theater, music, education, and even science are endless."—New Orleans Review"Bogost’s book effectively constitutes an exhortation to humans to 'stop and smell the aliens'—to allow the experience of attempting to think outside of a human conceptual framework to facilitate new ways of thinking that are based in speculation and analogy."—Invisible Culture"The power of Alien Phenomenology, in my reading, is a recreation of a sense of wonder about everything we are in contact with, including the things we craft."—Itineration Journal"Beautifully written and wonderfully stimulating."—Anthem"The refreshing voice of Bogost’s philosophy is well-suited to the brand of ontology he champions, and the strength of his prose is its capacity to communicate complex concepts in a straightforward fashion without oversimplifying or essentializing."—SubStance"Alien Phenomenology, or What It’s Like to Be a Thing, informed by years of video game design, encourages philosophers and theorists to reinvigorate their commitments to craft--as writers and makers."—Art PapersTable of ContentsContents1. Book SynopsisAmericans often assume that slave societies had little use for prisons and police because slaveholders inflicted violence directly or through overseers. Mustering tens of thousands of overlooked arrest and prison records, John Bardes demonstrates the opposite: in parts of the South, enslaved and free people were jailed at astronomical rates.

  • The Nail in the Skull and Other Victorian Urban

University Press of Mississippi The Nail in the Skull and Other Victorian Urban

Book SynopsisIn the last fifty years, folklorists have amassed an extraordinary corpus of contemporary legends including the Choking Doberman, the Eaten Ticket, and the Vanishing Hitchhiker. But what about the urban legends of the past? These legends and tales have rarely been collected, and when they occasionally appear, they do so as ancestors or precursors of the urban legends of today, rather than as stories in their own right. In The Nail in the Skull and Other Victorian Urban Legends, Simon Young fills this gap for British folklore (and for the wider English-speaking world) of the 1800s. Young introduces seventy Victorian urban legends ranging from Beetle Eyes to the Shoplifter''s Dilemma and from Hands in the Muff to the Suicide Club. While a handful of these stories are already known, the vast majority have never been identified, and they have certainly never received scholarly treatment. Young begins the volume with a lengthy introduction assessing nineteenth-century media

  • Belonging without Othering

Stanford University Press Belonging without Othering

Book SynopsisThe root of all inequality is the process of othering and its solution is the practice of belongingWe all yearn for connection and community, but we live in a time when calls for further division along the well-wrought lines of religion, race, ethnicity, caste, and sexuality are pervasive. This ubiquitous yet elusive problem feeds on fears created, inherited of the other. While the much-touted diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives are undeniably failing, and activists narrowly focus on specific and sometimes conflicting communities, Belonging without Othering prescribes a new approach that encourages us to turn toward one another in unprecedented and radical ways. The pressures that separate us have a common root: our tendency to cast people and groups in irreconcilable terms or the process of othering. This book gives vital language to this universal problem, unveiling its machinery at work across time and around the world. To su

Book SynopsisIn Frankenstein Was a Vegetarian: Essays on Food Choice, Identity, and Symbolism, Michael Owen Jones tackles topics often overlooked in foodways. At the outset he notes it was Victor Frankenstein''s daemon in Mary Shelley''s novel that advocated vegetarianism, not the scientist whose name has long been attributed to his creature. Jones explains how we communicate through what we eat, the connection between food choice and who we are or want to appear to be, the ways that many of us self-medicate moods with foods, and the nature of disgust. He presents fascinating case studies of religious bigotry and political machinations triggered by rumored bans on pork, the last meal requests of prisoners about to be executed, and the Utopian vision of Percy Bysshe Shelley, one of England''s greatest poets, that was based on a vegetable diet like the creature''s meals in Frankenstein. Jones also scrutinizes how food is used and abused on the campaign trail, how gender issue

Book SynopsisThese essays by Brian Meeks, a noted public intellectual in the Caribbean, reflect on Caribbean politics, particularly radical politics and ideologies in the postcolonial era. But his essays also explain the peculiarities of the contemporary neo-liberal period while searching for pathways beyond the current plight. In the first chapters, titled 'Theoretical Forays,' Meeks makes a conscious attempt to engage with contemporary Caribbean political thought at a moment of flux and search for a relevant theoretical language and style to both explicate the Caribbean's recent past and confront the difficult conditions of the early twenty-first century. The next part, 'Caribbean Questions,' both retrospective and biographical, retraces the author's own engagement with the University of the West Indies (UWI), the short-lived but influential Caribbean Black Power movement, the work of seminal Trinidadian thinker and activist Lloyd Best, Cuba's relationship with Jamaica, and tTrade ReviewThe book represents a major contribution to Caribbean political thought and will be useful for those interested in understanding critical aspects of the recent state of play in the philosophical currents of the region.

  • The Sensational Proletarian

MK - Stanford University Press The Sensational Proletarian

Book SynopsisStarving ghosts, anguished farmers, and grieving mothers. Floating heads, gaunt bodies, and masses of bodily fluids. Such are the visceral sensations, exaggerated affects, and suffering subjects that characterized leftist Korean cultural production in the 1920s and 1930s. In popular fiction, print cartoons, reportage, and other emergent forms of mass culture, scenes detailing the spectacular bodily harms endured by figures like migrant workers, tenant farmers, and everyday families proliferated. Yet at the time such representations were criticized as excessively grotesque and insufficiently political by leftist intellectuals, and they have subsequently been overlooked by scholars in favor of socialist realism and its dynamic proletarian heroes. The Sensational Proletarian, by contrast, focuses on these textual and visual representations to tell the story of how new affects and everyday experiences introduced by imperial capitalism and colonial modernity were mediated through the lower-class body. Kimberly Chung traces the emergence of "the sensational proletarian" as a central figure of colonial Korean print culture and reads its varied manifestations as emblematic of Korean efforts not only to grapple with modernity, imperialism, and capitalism, but to do so using the new political ideology and imaginary of Marxism. This book brings to light the centrality of sensational cultures in the development of class politics in Korea, an integral relationship that continues throughout modern and contemporary Korean cultural history.
