Book SynopsisLet a swirl of rose amid gilt embellishment inspire you to write your chronicles. This cover design is based on a binding originally published by Salel Binder in Paris in 1514. The tome, Chroniques, was created at a time when books were evolving and binders were using smaller formats that were easier to bind. Pasteboards replaced wood covers and gold tooling grew in popularity. The exuberance of the Chroniques design reflects the sheer splendour of the Renaissance approach to decoration that influenced architecture, art and all facets of cultural life. In the glittering rose-pink of this cover you may well see the intricacies of your own stories or the infinite possibilities of the written word. At minimum, we hope that Rose Chronicles will make you think of Paris, which has for centuries been a centre for art and publishing and a beacon of culture.

Book SynopsisIn Apartheid Remains, Sharad Chari explores how people handle the remains of segregation and apartheid in South Africa as witnessed through portals in an industrial-residential landscape in the Indian Ocean city of Durban. Through long-term historical and ethnographic research, Chari portrays South Africa’s twentieth century as a palimpsest that conserves the remains of multiple pasts, including attempts by the racial state to remake territory and personhood while instead deepening spatial contradictions and struggles. When South Durban’s denizens collectively mobilized in various ways---through Black Consciousness politics and other attempts at refusing the ruinous articulation of biopolitics, sovereignty, and capital---submerged traditions of the Indian Ocean and the Black Atlantic offered them powerful resources. Of these, Chari reads Black documentary photography as particularly insightful audiovisual blues critique. At the tense interface of Marxism, feminism, a

Book SynopsisStructural Analysis of Social Behavior (SASB) helps clinicians and researchers make objective assessments of relationship patterns, and enables clients to improve their social interactions. SASB can help identify connections between clients' current symptoms, and their current and historical relationship patterns. The SASB coding system serves as the basis for case formulation, which in turn informs the choice of interventions used in a variety of therapeutic approaches. SASB can also be used to evaluate the effectiveness of interventions, thus keeping therapy on track. This book summarizes over 5 years of research and clinical practice with SASB, and demonstrates how it can be used with any therapeutic approach. It has been traditionally used with patients who are comorbid, often rehospitalized, dysfunctional, and suicidal, although it can be used with any clinical population. SASB offers providers a therapy compass that helps clarify where the client is now, and pointing in the direction they need to go in order to reach their therapy goals.

Book SynopsisHow Yiddish changed to express and memorialize the trauma of the HolocaustThe Holocaust radically altered the way many East European Jews spoke Yiddish. Finding prewar language incapable of describing the imprisonment, death, and dehumanization of the Shoah, prisoners added or reinvented thousands of Yiddish words and phrases to describe their new reality. These crass, witty, and sometimes beautiful Yiddish words Khurbn Yiddish, or Yiddish of the Holocaust puzzled and intrigued the East European Jews who were experiencing the metamorphosis of their own tongue in real time. Sensing that Khurbn Yiddish words harbored profound truths about what Jews endured during the Holocaust, some Yiddish speakers threw themselves into compiling dictionaries and glossaries to document and analyze these new words. Others incorporated Khurbn Yiddish into their poetry and prose. In Occupied Words, Hannah Pollin-Galay explores Khurbn Yiddish as a form of Holocaust memory and as a t

  • Global Ayahuasca

    Stanford University Press Global Ayahuasca

Book SynopsisSurveying contemporary networks and practices in Peru, Australia, and China, anthropologist Alex K. Gearin explores the visionary marvels, wonders, and diversity of ayahuasca drinking today. Ceremonies of drinking the psychoactive brew ayahuasca have flourished across the planet in recent decades. Emerging from Indigenous roots in the Amazon rainforest, the brew is now envisaged by many as the spiritual gateway to archaic and primordial worlds, with reports of healing, spiritual insight, and awe-inspiring visions placing ayahuasca among the burgeoning field of psychedelic medicines. Astonished and allured by descriptions of ayahuasca experiences, researchers in psychology, anthropology, and philosophy have attempted to define the shared properties of the visions. In this book, Alex Gearin challenges this simplified obsession with universal truth and explores the embodied practices of contemporary ayahuasca drinkers to reveal how the brew has conjured contradictory experiences across the globe. These range from urban disenchantment and capitalist mastery to competitive sorcery and ecological harmony, wherein the plant-induced visions embody different attitudes towards capitalist modernity. Based upon ethnographic research among Shipibo healers in remote Peru, alternative medicine groups in urban Australia, and entrepreneurs and corporate managers in mainland China, Global Ayahuasca examines how the wondrous visions of ayahuasca are entangled within the social and economic realities that they illuminate, revealing different tensions, fears, and hopes of everyday modern life.

Book SynopsisGleaning for Communism is a historical ethnography of the property regime upon which Soviet legal scholars legislated a large modern state as a household, with guaranteed rights to a commons of socialist property, rather than private possessions. Starting with former Leningrad workers'' everyday stories about smuggling industrial scrap home over factory fences, Xenia Cherkaev traces collectivist ethical logic that was central to this socialist household economy, in theory and practice: from its Stalin-era inception, through Khrushchev''s major foregrounding of communist ethics, to Gorbachev''s perestroika, which unfurled its grounding tension between the interests of any given collective and of the socialist household economy itself. A story of how the socialist household economy functioned, how it collapsed, and how it was remembered, this book is haunted throughout by a spectral image of the totalitarian state, whose jealous political control over the Table of ContentsIntroduction: Households and Historiographies 1. • A Conspiratorial Life Robert Welch the John Birch

The University of Chicago Press A Conspiratorial Life Robert Welch the John Birch

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThe first full-scale biography of Robert Welch, who founded the John Birch Society and planted some of modern conservatism's most insidious seeds. Though you may not know his name, Robert Welch (1899-1985)founder of the John Birch Societyis easily one of the most significant architects of our current political moment. In A Conspiratorial Life, the first full-scale biography of Welch, Edward H. Miller delves deep into the life of an overlooked figure whose ideas nevertheless reshaped the American right. A child prodigy who entered college at age 12, Welch became an unlikely candy magnate, founding the company that created Sugar Daddies, Junior Mints, and other famed confections. In 1958, he funneled his wealth into establishing the organization that would define his legacy and change the face of American politics: the John Birch Society. Though the group's paranoiac right-wing nativism was dismissed by conservative thinkers like William F. Buckley, its ideas gradually moved from the far-right fringe into the mainstream. By exploring the development of Welch's political worldview, A Conspiratorial Life shows how the John Birch Society's rabid libertarianismand its highly effective grassroots networkingbecame a profound, yet often ignored or derided influence on the modern Republican Party. Miller convincingly connects the accusatory conservatism of the midcentury John Birch Society to the inflammatory rhetoric of the Tea Party, the Trump administration, Q, and more. As this book makes clear, whether or not you know his name or what he accomplished, it's hard to deny that we're living in Robert Welch's America. Trade Review“In this highly readable, insightful biography of Robert Welch, Miller uses his unique access into Welch's papers to reveal a man much more important to modern American conservatism than we have previously understood. Miller shows how, far from being marginalized to the fringes of the movement, Welch was central to creating the destructive conspiratorial worldview that now dominates our politics.” * Heather Cox Richardson, author of “Letters from an American” *“[A] terrific biography. . . In Miller’s hands, the story of Robert Welch shows that there was no real dividing line between the responsible and radical right.” * Times Literary Supplement *"The rise of Trump, Q-anon, and a Republican Party seemingly allergic to the ordinary canons of decency and expertise, has led historians to a reexamination of brands of American conservatism previously considered too extreme to be relevant to understanding the present. This work demands a rare combination of talents: an ability to empathize with ways of thinking from which reason recoils, and a moral sense that refuses to normalize it. Miller possesses both in abundance, which is what makes this groundbreaking biography of Robert Welch of the John Birch Society so very valuable." * Rick Perlstein, author of Reaganland: America's Right Turn, 1976-1980 *“In this immersive biography, Miller traces the roots of today’s right-wing conspiracy theories to John Birch Society founder Robert Welch . . . Scrupulously researched and lucidly written, this is an enlightening study of an overlooked yet influential figure in American politics.” * Publishers Weekly *“Miller’s study of Robert Welch, the founder of the John Birch Society, presents a plausible account of America’s slow descent from the 1950s into the abyss of post-truth politics.” * London Review of Books *"Traces the origins and history of the John Birch Society and, in the process, provides historical perspective on the far-right populism of the Trump era. . . . On the whole, as Miller’s book makes clear, Republican politicians of the early 1960s were more eager to court the John Birch Society than to distance themselves from it." * New York Review of Books *“A Conspiratorial Life is the first comprehensive biography of Robert Welch. It is revelatory about his role in the development of modern American conservatism.” * Foreword Reviews *"Offers a good angle from which to appraise the fractured state of American conservatism." * Financial Times *“[An] impressively researched and nuanced reconsideration of the modern American right. . . Miller makes a provocative and persuasive case that Welch was a vanguard figure rather than a retrograde one.” * The New Republic *“A reminder that outlandish conspiracism has a long history on the right.” * Los Angeles Review of Books *"Miller makes an important contribution to understanding how conspiracy theories have altered American politics in this biography of Robert Welch (1899–1985) . . . Although Welch died in 1985, Miller argues that his use of the “Big Lie” still resonates today, manifesting in the Tea Party's xenophobic anger; Donald Trump's election as president in 2016; and the aftermath of the 2020 presidential election, which culminated in the January 6 insurrection. Recommended." * Choice *“Miller has undertaken the definitive biography of John Birch Society founder Robert Welch, and he has succeeded. A Conspiratorial Life is incredibly thorough, carefully researched and written, and enlivened by energetic prose.” * Heather Hendershot, author of Open to Debate: How William F. Buckley Put Liberal America on the Firing Line *"A welcome contribution to the history of modern right-wing politics at its extremes." * Kirkus Reviews *“[An] eye-opener of a biography." -- Robert Siegel * Moment Magazine *"In the standard origin story of the modern US right, today's conservative movement was born with an excommunication: when William F. Buckley, the erudite, upper-crust founder of the National Review, turned on his onetime ally, Robert Welch of the John Birch Society, driving Welch and the rest of the conspiracy-hunting "Birchers" out of the respectable right. The truth, as always, is much messier, as Edward H. Miller demonstrates in his new book. . . The deeper imperative of the book, Miller writes, is to correct historians' long-standing misapprehensions about conservatism, and what the field has missed by dismissing the darker, stranger corners of the right, and how its apparent losers may have won the long game." * Salon *"An eye-opening look at the deep roots of rightwing politics in the United States. Sweeping in scope, the book takes a deep dive into the fears at the heart of the John Birch Society . . . [Miller] provides a deep, thoughtful, and accessible account of Welch’s lasting hold on U.S. politics." * The Progressive *"An engaging and penetrating dive into the enduring influence of the John Birch Society and the group’s founder Robert Welch." * Political Research Associates *"Most accounts of the rise of conservatism in the twentieth century follow a familiar set of characters: William F. Buckley, Barry Goldwater, Ronald Reagan. Historian Edward Miller suggests an alternative leading man: Robert Welch. His new biography of the founder and leader of the John Birch Society, the anticommunist grass-roots organization founded in 1958, makes the case that the scholarly focus on the politically respectable right has led to a distorted understanding of the history of conservatism—one that is especially problematic given the prevalence of loony conspiracy theories on the right today." -- Kim Phillips-Fein * Society for US Intellectual History *"A comprehensive account. . . Miller’s central contention that Welch 'paved the way for the conservatism of the twentieth century, shaped events in the twentieth-first century, and will continue to do so far into the future' is as disturbing as it is compelling." * The Review of Politics *"Miller’s contribution to this revisionist historiography constitutes a cleverly written, finely textured, and badly needed study of a pivotal and too-often marginalized figure in the development of the modern American Right." * Journal of Southern History *Table of ContentsIntroduction 1 Chowan County, North Carolina 1700–1899 2 Stockton, 1899–1910 3 Elizabeth City, Raleigh, Annapolis, 1910–1919 4 The Candyman, 1919–1927 5 Professional Breakdown and the Great Depression, 1928–1940 6 America First, 1940–1945 7 Postwar Dreams and Delusions, 1946–1950 8 The Candidate, 1950 9 May God Forgive Us, 1951–1952 10 There’s Just Something about Ike, 1952 11 A Republican Looks at His President, 1953–1954 12 The Saga of John Birch, 1954 13 Adventures in the Far East, 1954–1955 14 Arrivals and Departures, 1955–1958 15 The Indy Eleven, 1957–1959 16 Revelations, 1959–1960 17 Goldwater in ’60, 1960 18 Staccato Jabs, 1961–1962 19 Succession? 1961–1962 20 “Where Were You in ’62?,” 1962 21 Revolution in the Streets and the Paranoid Style in Belmont, 1963 22 Two Novembers, 1963–1964 23 Nadir, 1965–1966 24 Avenging the Insiders, 1966–1968 25 The Fifty-Foot Cabin Cruiser, 1969–1975 26 Bunker, 1970–1978 27 Making Morning in America . . . , 1970–1985 Epilogue Acknowledgments Notes Index

Book SynopsisTrade Review"In George Meléndez Wright: The Fight for Wildlife and Wilderness in the National Parks, Emory grants Wright the well-deserved credit he is due. Part biography, part historical account, the book reads like a love letter to Wright." -- Lindsey Botts * Sierra, "5 Must-Read Books for Your Spring Reading List" *"Emory’s enumeration of Wright’s accomplishments—including a survey of wildlife in Western parks, the first of its kind—is nothing short of awe-inspiring. Emory, who is married to one of Wright’s granddaughters, has succeeded admirably in demonstrating the continuing relevance of Wright’s ideas and the value of his legacy. Highly recommended for nature lovers and park enthusiasts." * Library Journal *"Although Wright died in a car accident at age thirty-one, his fervor for our national parks and substantial achievements in furthering conservation biology left a lasting legacy and are a testament to how full and influential a short life can be." * Booklist *"Emory has in this book brought the remarkable story of George Meléndez Wright out of the shadows of national park history. It is a story of brilliance, vision, tragedy, and missed opportunity. . . . This book is an informative, thoroughly researched, and readable account of a remarkable man of historic importance." * National Parks Traveler *"Emory has in this book brought the remarkable story of George Meléndez Wright out of the shadows of national park history. It is a story of brilliance, vision, tragedy, and missed opportunity. . . . This book is an informative, thoroughly researched, and readable account of a remarkable man of historic importance." * Rewilding Earth *"Almost a century after his death, a dedicated young biologist remains a role model for conservationists." * Stanford Magazine *"The National Park Service has many unsung heroes, and George Meléndez Wright is in the top tier. In this book, conservation writer Emory documents how Wright was responsible for the first wildlife policy handbook developed for the NPS. . . . Emory's text is illustrated with black-and-white photos; interspersed throughout are short quotes primarily from Wright’s work but also from friends and others involved in the reformulation of wildlife policy. Anyone interested in the history and evolution of the national parks and the National Park Service will find this book a good read. Highly recommended." * Choice *“To those of us who have worked in conservation, and especially in the National Park Service, as I did for forty years, George Meléndez Wright is a hero, icon, and role model. His story deserves to be told, and Emory has done that well. It will inspire readers to lives in service to conservation of the planet upon which we all depend.” -- Jonathan B. Jarvis, eighteenth director of the National Park Service, coauthor of "The Future of Conservation in America" and "National Parks Forever"“George Meléndez Wright was a pivotal figure––pushing the vision of parks from scenic tourist spots to crucial sites for the preservation of the natural world. This remarkable, vibrant history fills a large gap in our understanding of––and appreciation for––a person who left a lasting legacy.” -- Dayton Duncan, writer/producer of "The National Parks: America’s Best Idea"“George Meléndez Wright cuts a remarkable figure in the history of American conservation: keen and patient observer of nature, acute scientist, skillful navigator of politics, passionate advocate for national parks, bilingual emissary to Spanish-speaking colleagues, poetic writer, and, above all, ecological visionary ahead of his time. He was also a generous and well-loved friend to many, which is why his accidental death at a young age was felt so acutely. Emory’s telling of Wright’s story superbly captures the full-to-the-brim life of this underappreciated pioneer of nature protection. Capitalizing on exclusive access to a trove of personal field journals and other papers, as well as archival research, Emory’s own prose sings with the spirit of George Meléndez Wright and leaves us inspired to carry on his work in our own time.” -- David Harmon, executive director of the George Wright SocietyTable of ContentsForeword Preface: Field Notes and Family Prologue: Serendipity Chapter 1. Book SynopsisTrade ReviewPraise for The Janitors of the Post-Apocalypse:"The book is damn hilarious. It's less Tanya Huff and more Phule's Company in the best possible way. It's witty and sharp, it sneaks in some social commentary, and it skates just on the right side of the line between clever absurdity and complete chaos." —Ilona Andrews, #1 New York Times bestselling author"A high-stakes romp full of interstellar hi-jinks and pulse-pounding action. Jim Hines's space janitors are the unlikeliest crew of heroes ever to save a galaxy." —Lisa Shearin, New York Times-bestselling author of the Raine Benares novels"It's like Guardians of the Galaxy meets MacGyver, with zombies." —Howard Tayler, Hugo-winning author of Schlock Mercenary“Jim Hines is one of the funniest, and most fun, writers in our genre! Terminal Alliance skewers science fiction tropes and takes on a wild romp through an original universe.” —Tobias S. Buckell, author of the Xenowealth series“Terminal Alliance was a really fun read. Mops is a great POV character, and I enjoyed the way that the maintenance crew got to be the heroes—but also they didn't just pick up the controls of the ship and fly around as though it were super easy.” —Ann Leckie, Nebula- and Hugo-winning author of Ancillary Justice“I enjoyed Terminal Alliance very much. It’s a spunky, irreverent interstellar romp with most unlikely heroes and frequent laugh-out-loud moments. I look forward to more adventures featuring this delightful cast of galactic janitors.” —Marko Kloos, author of the Frontlines series“Like the slightly demented love child of Douglas Adams and Elizabeth Moon, Terminal Alliance is clever, silly, full of surprises, and unfailingly entertaining. Apparently Jim C. Hines is capable of being funny in every genre.” —Deborah Blake, author of the Baba Yaga series“Hines (Libriomancer) delivers a fantastic space opera that doesn’t skimp on the action and excitement but pairs it with a hefty dose of slightly scatological humor. The author is especially clever in having Mops and her team leverage cleaning tools and a knowledge of spaceship plumbing to fight their enemies.” —Library Journal (starred)"[Terminal Alliance] is also good science fiction: a solid premise, an expansive universe, a compelling history, a strong and varied cast of characters, pulse-pounding action, and a galactic crisis with high stakes. The fact that it’s funny is icing on a rich and delicious cake. Clever, and should appeal to fans of Douglas Adams and John Scalzi." —Booklist"Subtle absurdist humor permeates the narrative, derived from faulty translations, cultural references without context, and unconventional solutions to problems. Clever characterization and action-packed moments round out this thoroughly satisfying outing." —Publishers Weekly

Book SynopsisRockstar Games’ Red Dead franchise has grown into one of the most critically acclaimed video game franchises of the twenty-first century. This book offers a critical, interdisciplinary look at this cultural phenomenon at the intersection of game studies and American history.Trade Review“Video games like the Red Dead series have supercharged the significance of (re)imagined Wests and will continue to do so for the foreseeable future. Like the amply filled satchels and saddle bags of Red Harlow, Arthur Morgan, and John Marson, this collection has you covered, delivering an exquisitely intersectional range of scholarly work on a paradigm-shifting addition to the Western imaginary in the 21st century. Saddle up, pard! Your trail to exploring video-game Wests should start here.”——Stefan “Steve” Rabitsch, Associate Professor of American Studies at the University of Oslo, co-founder of the European Association for American Studies “West of the Rest” network“This volume is a timely intervention that explores one of the biggest historical game franchises through a myriad of lenses that demonstrate the complexity and impact of the games and the discourses from which they draw. In their careful arrangement of the book, Wills and Wright have shown how video games, and in particular Red Dead, are the new frontier for the ongoing construction of the historical West in both the US and international imaginary.”—Adam Chapman“This collection provides a wide-ranging treatment of Rockstar’s Red Dead franchise. The essays here offer serious meditation on a persistent fascination with the mythic West in the popular imagination. Overall, a valuable contribution to the growing field of contemporary (and historical) game studies.”—Matthew Carter, Senior Lecturer in Film at Manchester Metropolitan University and author of Myth of the Western: New Perspectives on Hollywood's Frontier Narrative.
