  • Johns Hopkins University Press The Chetnik Movement and the Yugoslav Resistance

Book SynopsisOriginally published in 1975. This book fills a gap in the historical knowledge of wartime Yugoslavia. Focusing on the Chetnik movement provides a better understanding of the various ways that important segments of the population, including members of the Yugoslav officer corps and Serb civilians, perceived and responded to the occupation. The partisans' ultimate success does not conceal the fact that during the greater part of the war, several armed groups, owing at least some sort of allegiance to Mihailovic, chose very different courses of resistance. The overriding question for Milazzo is how a movement whose leadership was in no sense pro-Axis found itself progressively drawn into a hopelessly compromising set of relationships with the occupation authorities and the Quisling regime. What was it about the situation in occupied Yugoslavia and the Serb officers' response to that state of affairs that prevented them from carrying out serious anti-Axis activity or engaging in effectiveTable of ContentsPrefaceChapter 1. University of Toronto Press OnscreenOffscreen

Book SynopsisBased on over a decade of ethnographic fieldwork in the South Indian state of Tamil Nadu, Onscreen/Offscreen is an exploration of the politics and being of filmic images. The book examines contestations inside and outside the Tamil film industry over the question "what is an image?" Answers to this question may be found in the ontological politics that take place on film sets, in theatre halls, and in the social fabric of everyday life in South India, from populist electoral politics and the gendering of social space to caste uplift and domination.Bridging and synthesizing linguistic anthropology, film studies, visual studies, and media anthropology, Onscreen/Offscreen rethinks key issues across a number of fields concerned with the semiotic constitution of social life, from the performativity and ontology of images to questions of spectatorship, realism, and presence. In doing so, it offers both a challenge to any approach that would separate image from social Table of ContentsAcknowledgments Note on Transliteration, Quotation, Names, and Transcripts Introduction: Ontological Politics of the Image Introduction From Ontologies to Ontological Politics Toward a Linguistic Anthropology of Cinema A Brief History of Tamil Cinema For a “Tamil” Cinema Realism and the Mass Hero Overview of the Chapters Part I: Presence/Representation 1. University of Chicago Press Knots or the Violence of Desire in Renaissance

Book SynopsisAn interdisciplinary study of hair through the art, philosophy, and science of fifteenth-century Florence. In this innovative cultural history, hair is the portal through which Emanuele Lugli accesses the cultural production of Lorenzo il Magnifico's Florence. Lugli reflects on the ways writers, doctors, and artists expressed religious prejudices, health beliefs, and gender and class subjugation through alluring works of art, in medical and political writings, and in poetry. He considers what may have compelled Sandro Botticelli, the young Leonardo da Vinci, and dozens of their contemporaries to obsess over braids, knots, and hairdos by examining their engagement with scientific, philosophical, and theological practices. By studying hundreds of fifteenth-century documents that engage with hair, Lugli foregrounds hair's association to death and gathers insights about human life at a time when Renaissance thinkers redefined what it meant to be human and to be alive. Lugli uncovers overlooked perceptions of hair when it came to be identified as a potential vector for liberating culture, and he corrects a centuries-old prejudice that sees hair as a trivial subject, relegated to passing fashion or the decorative. He shows hair, instead, to be at the heart of Florentine culture, whose inherent violence Lugli reveals by prompting questions about the entanglement of politics and desire. Trade Review“Knots is the opposite of academic hair-splitting. Adopting a self-aware and approachable voice that’s attuned to both contemporary and historical concerns, Emanuele Lugli reorients our understanding of Medicean Florence around hair, a borderland of the body usually treated as trivial. He braids together Renaissance art, science, literature, and philosophy into a new way of imagining what cultural history can be.” -- Rebecca Zorach, Northwestern University“In this lovely study of hair’s meanings in Renaissance culture, Lugli unveils ways in which people naturalize cultural values regarding age, race, class, gender, and sexuality. Beautifully illustrated, meticulously researched, and engagingly written, Knots will engage scholars, students, and lay readers alike.” -- Katharine Park, Harvard UniversityTable of ContentsONE Prologue: Hair Care TWO Learning to See Thinness THREE Desiccated Smoke FOUR Tie Me Down, Burn Me Up FIVE Superfluities SIX Achonciare SEVEN Never Just Itself EIGHT Raking the Skin NINE On the Politics of a Comb TEN Split Ends: A Conclusion Appendix: Maps Acknowledgments Illustration Credits Notes Index

Book SynopsisArnold Krupat’s From the Boarding Schools makes available previously unheard Apache voices from the Indian boarding schools. It includes selections from two unpublished autobiographies by Sam Kenoi and Dan Nicholas, produced in the 1930s with the anthropologist Morris Opler, as well as material by and about Vincent Natalish, a contemporary of Kenoi and Nicholas. Natalish was one of more than one hundred Apaches taken from Fort Marion to the Carlisle Indian School by its superintendent, Captain Richard Henry Pratt, in 1887. A considerable number of these students died at the school, and many who were sent home for illness or poor health did not recover. Natalish, however, remained at Carlisle and graduated in 1899. He married, had a son, and lived and worked in New York. He also actively sought the release of his relatives and other Apaches held prisoner at Fort Sill, Oklahoma. Apache people have been telling and circulating stories among themselves Trade Review“The federal Indian boarding schools are an increasingly important subject for both scholars and the general public. Apache autobiographical sources are rare, and so collecting them and making them available is an important contribution. From the Boarding Schools is written in an accessible style, which is a real strength of this book.”—John R. • The Bartering Mindset

University of Toronto Press The Bartering Mindset

Book SynopsisWe use money to solve our everyday problems, and it generally works well. Despite its economic benefits, however, money has a psychological downside: it trains us to think about negotiations narrow-mindedly, leading us to negotiate badly. Suggesting that we need a non-monetary mindset to negotiate better, The Bartering Mindset shows us how to look outside the monetary economy to the bartering economies of the past, where people traded what they had for what they needed. The book argues that, because of the economic difficulties associated with bartering, barterers had to use a more sophisticated form of negotiation a strategic approach that can make us master negotiators today. Now available in paperback, this book immerses readers in the assumptions made by barterers, collectively referred to as the bartering mindset, and then demonstrates how to apply this mindset to modern, monetary negotiations. The Bartering Mindset concludes that our individual, organizaTable of ContentsAcknowledgments 1 The Limits of the Monetary Mindset 2 The Bartering Mindset 3 Step 1: Deeply and Broadly Defi ne Your Needs and Offerings 4 Steps 2–3: Map Out the Full Range of Transaction Partners and the Full Range of Their Possible Needs and Off erings 5 Step 4: Anticipate the Most Powerful Set of Partnerships across the Market 6 Step 5: Cultivate the Most Powerful Set of Partnerships across the Market 7 Integrating the Bartering and Monetary Mindsets 8 Objections to the Bartering Mindset 9 Conclusions and Applications Notes Index

Book SynopsisThe emergent science of transgenderism and related philosophies of gender propose a full-scale inversion of the understanding of God, man, and the created order articulated in classical metaphysics, undermining and parodying both the causality and ontology voiced by Genesis 1:27 (God created man in His own image,... male and female He created them.). Whether through subversive performative identity or by surgical sex change, the divinely made human person is now threatened with abolition and replacement by the self-made man and the man-made woman. In Metaphysics and Gender, Michele M. Schumacher offers a corrective to this distorted and distorting outlook, calling for the recovery of an anthropological vision rooted in recognition of the normative divine art of nature and of the likenessand far greater unlikenessbetween divine and human causality. Surveying contemporary transgender trends, Schumacher identifies and excavates their conceptual and ideological foundations in the gender

Behind the veneer of leisure and indulgence, most influencers are laboring daily, usually for pittance wages, to manufacture a commodity called the selfa raw material for brands to usewith the dream of becoming corporations in human form by owning and investing in the products they sell. Book SynopsisIn the third verse of his eponymous New Testament epistle, Jude exhorts his readers to contend for the faith which was once for all delivered, a charge that continues to resound to the present day. This collection of essays responds to the apostle's call by providing both a diagnosis of the ills of modern progressivist Catholic doctrinal and moral theology and a prescription for the safeguarding of orthodoxy via a rightly understood return to the traditional sources of theology. The essays in the first part of this collection seek to answer the question, What went wrong with Catholic theology since the Second Vatican Council?. Following a brief account of the movement in modern theology from its philosophical basis in Kant and Hegel to the nouvelle théologie and later progressivist theologies of the twentieth century, the writings of Karl Rahner, Walter Kasper, and Bernhard Häring are treated as representative of principal problematic trends, and the concept of heresy is surveyed as

    20 in stock

Book SynopsisThis book is about innovation ecosystems, Clusters of Innovation (COI) and the Global Networks of Clusters of Innovation (GNCOI) they naturally form. What is innovation and why is it important to us? Innovation is nothing less than the ability for constructive response and adaptation to change. The cause and catalyst for that change is frequently identified as technology and its unceasing pressure to improve on existing solutions and address unmet needs. The last decade has painfully demonstrated that exogenous environmental shocks are also sources of change that call for innovative responses, ranging from the obvious challenges such as global warming and Covid-19 to the more subtle social and political perturbations of our time.Entrepreneurs, in collaboration with venture investors and major corporations can create a flywheel of constructive engagement, a cluster of Innovation, that helps build the resiliency of our communities to adsorb and rebound from these shocks. The process is enhanced when actively supported by government, universities, and other elements of the ecosystem. This book provides the tools for understanding this value creation process and the means to enhance it, in both emerging and mature innovation ecosystems. This book provides a framework for understanding innovation in mature and emerging innovation ecosystems to a wide swath of professionals and academics, from senior executives of major corporations, government leaders, public policy makers, and consultants, to academics, researchers, and educators.Trade Review‘Governments world-wide are seeking to encourage the growth of new ventures. Making this task harder is the fact that entrepreneurship is undoubtedly an “increasing returns” activity: the presence of nearby high-growth ventures increases the innovation and success of a new business. This volume presents a fascinating series of country-specific “case studies” that show the potential and challenges associated with growing entrepreneurial clusters.’ -- Josh Lerner, Harvard Business School, US‘Professor Jerome Engel has updated, expanded, and extended his Clusters of Innovation framework in this new book. There are fresh ideas about culture and behavior in these clusters. There are new regions included. And there is an extension to a non-geographic cluster built around a business model instead of a location. Anyone wishing to gain new insights into what makes the Silicon Valley cluster of innovation work will find this new volume an essential resource.’ -- Henry Chesbrough, University of California, Berkeley, US and Luiss University, Rome, Italy‘How do entrepreneurs, risk capital and corporate Innovation strategy come together to form an innovation cluster? Clusters of Innovation in the Age of Disruption provides a framework for understanding how this happens. This essential text updates the innovation cluster framework and provides a series of case studies on urban clusters and national strategies.
