WW Norton & Co Gran Cocina Latina The Food of Latin America
Book SynopsisThe 2013 James Beard Foundation Cookbook of the Year How to cook everything Latin American.Trade Review"This extraordinary masterwork could only have been written by someone with an academic’s patience and sense of history and tradition. Vastly detailed and rich with anthropological, historical, and cultural information, I refer to this book first anytime I want to learn or better understand anything about Latin cuisine." -- Samin Nosrat, author of Salt Fat Acid Heat"This book not only answers the how but the why as well. Maricel is our bridge to the past, the history of Latin American cocina, describing the original connections to Spain and its cooking and then what has evolved... more aromas, more textures, more flavors, more sexy ingredients. We can now understand Latin America better because of Maricel and the amazing foods that tell its rich history." -- José Andrés"I know of no other book that approaches the scholarship, passion and decades-long dedication that Maricel Presilla has lavished on Gran Cocina Latina." -- Rick Bayless"Gran Cocina Latina is a book as grand as its subject. It’s a beautifully written distillation of Maricel Presilla’s decades of experience in the markets and kitchens of Latin America. I can’t imagine a better guide to this vast and underappreciated region. Maricel is a scholar, food importer, restaurateur, tireless explorer, and above all is passionate about everything she does. Gran Cocina Latina explains clearly how to bring the special flavors of Latin America to our own tables." -- Harold McGee"Books like this don’t happen very often so drink it in and know it will still be in your kitchen ten years from now." -- Lynne Rossetto Kasper, Host of The Splendid Table®, public radio's national food show from American Public Media"The food of the Spanish- and Portuguese-speaking New World is complex, intricate, and has variety and range, extending from Cuba to Ecuador and from Mexico to Brazil. Maricel Presilla, a chef and food historian, takes us through that whole continent in a comprehensible, intelligent, original, and delicious voyage." -- Jacques Pépin"[A] serious but accessible study." -- Pete Wells - New York Times

Stanford University Press Merchants of Knowledge
Book SynopsisBetween 1450 and 1550, a remarkable century of intellectual exchange developed across the Eastern Mediterranean. As Renaissance Europe depended on knowledge from the Ottoman Empire, and the courts of Mehmed the Conqueror and Bayezid II greatly benefitted from knowledge coming out of Europe, merchants of knowledgemultilingual and transregional Jewish scholarsbecame an important bridge among the powers. With this book, Robert Morrison is the first to track the network of scholars who mediated exchanges in astronomy, astrology, Qabbalah, and philosophy. Their books, manuscripts, and acts of translation all held economic value, thus commercial and intellectual exchange commingledknowledge became transactional as these merchants exchanged texts for more intellectual material and social capital. While parallels between medieval Islamic astronomy and the famous heliocentric arrangement posited by Copernicus are already known, Morrison reveals far deeper networks of intellectual exchange that extended well beyond theoretical astronomy and shows how religion, science, and philosophy, areas that will eventually develop into separate fields, were once interwoven. The Renaissance portrayed in Merchants of Knowledge is not, from the perspective of the Ottoman Muslim contacts of the Jewish merchants of knowledge, hegemonic. It's a Renaissance permeated by diversity, the cultural and political implications of which the West is only now waking up to.

John Wiley & Sons Clinical Hypnosis for Pain Control A
Book SynopsisThis comprehensive guide shows how integrating hypnosis with psychotherapy and mindful meditation can help clinicians treat patients who suffer from chronic and acute pain. David R. Patterson and M. Elena Mendoza present hypnotic analgesia as a viable alternative to psychopharmacological interventions for pain resulting from physical injuries, nerve damage, surgery, neurological problems, and other sources. They review research elucidating the neurophysiological and biopsychosocial roots of pain and provide clinical strategies that can be applied in a variety of settings. Patterson and Mendoza adopt a nuanced treatment model that deemphasizes pain reduction, which can be counterproductive, and focuses instead on adaptive pain management through cognitive restructuring. This second edition includes updated research findings and practice guidelines, including technological innovations like virtual reality hypnosis, and a new chapter on mindful meditation. The authors also add a step-by-step case example that walks readers through an integrative, eight-session process and brings the techniques described in this volume to life.

Stanford University Press The Time That Remains A Commentary on the Letter
Book SynopsisAgamben seeks to separate the Pauline texts from the history of the Church that canonized them, thus revealing them to be "the fundamental messianic texts of the West." He argues that Paul's Letters are concerned not with the foundation of a new religion but rather with the "messianic" abolition of Jewish law.Trade Review"The Time that Remains presents itself as an exegetical seminar on the opening line of the Letter to the Romans ("Paul, called as a slave of Jesus the Messiah, separated as apostle for the announcement of God")... Requiring no prior knowledge of Wittgenstein's thought, it is the first book-length argument that his views on ethics decisively shaped his ontological and semantic thought.Trade Review"This is an outstanding book. Owing to its broad and balanced scope, I know of no better book on the Tractatus. Pluto Press Crack Capitalism
Book SynopsisA groundbreaking guide to moving beyond capitalism, which shows that radical change can only come from exploiting 'cracks' in the system.Trade Review'Infectiously optimistic' -- Steven Poole, the GuardianTable of ContentsPart I Break 1. Break. We want to break. We want to create a different world. Now. Nothing more common. Nothing more obvious. Nothing more simple. Nothing more difficult. 2. Our method is the method of the crack. 3. It is time to learn the new language of a new struggle. Part II Cracks: The Anti-Politics of Dignity 4. The cracks begin with a No, from which there grows a dignity, a negation-and-creation. 5. A crack is the perfectly ordinary creation of a space or moment in which we assert a different type of doing. 6. Cracks break dimensions, break dimensionality. 7. Cracks are explorations in an anti-politics of dignity. Part III Cracks on the Edge of Impossibility 8. Dignity is our weapon against a world of destruction. 9. Cracks clash with the social synthesis of capitalism. 10. Cracks exist on the edge of impossibility, but they do exist. Moving they exist: dignity is a fleet-footed dance. Part IV The Dual Character of Labour 11. The cracks are the revolt of one form of doing against another: the revolt of doing against labour. 12. The abstraction of doing into labour is the weaving of capitalism. 13. The abstraction of doing into labour is a historical process of transformation that created the social synthesis of capitalism: primitive accumulation. Part V Abstract Labour: The Great Enclosure 14. Abstract labour encloses both our bodies and our minds. 15. The abstraction of doing into labour is a process of personification, the creation of character masks, the formation of the working class. 16. The abstraction of doing into labour is the creation of the male labourer and the dimorphisation of sexuality. 17. The abstraction of doing into labour is the constitution of nature as object. 18. The abstraction of doing into labour is the externalisation of our power –to-do and the creation of the citizen, politics and the state. 19. The abstraction of doing into labour is the homogenisation of time. 20. The abstraction of doing into labour is the creation of totality. 21. Abstract labour rules: The abstraction of doing into labour is the creation of a cohesive law-bound totality sustained by the exploitation of labour. 22. The labour movement is the movement of abstract labour. Part VI The Crisis of Abstract Labour 23. Abstraction is not just a past but also a present process. 24. Concrete doing overflows from abstract labour: it exists in-against-and-beyond abstract labour. 25. Doing is the crisis of abstract labour 26. The breakthrough of doing against labour throws us into a new world of struggle. Part VII Doing against Labour: the melodies of interstitial revolution 27. Doing dissolves totality, synthesis, value. 28. Doing is the moving of the mulier abscondita against character masks. We are the mulier abscondita. 29. Doing dissolves the homogenisation of time. Part VIII A Time of Birth? 30. We are the forces of production: our power is the power of doing. 31. We are the crisis of capitalism, the misfitting-overflowing of our power-to-do, the breakthrough of another world, perhaps. 32. Stop Making Capitalism Index

Duke University Press The Republic Unsettled
Book SynopsisTrade Review"The Republic Unsettled is thick, sophisticated thinking, which should unsettle the comfortable certainties of French and American secularism and monoculturalism. . . . Anthropologists like Fernando comprehend the situation most fully, and we owe it to our fellow citizens and our own societies to get the message out as widely and loudly as possible." -- Jack David Eller * Anthropology Review Database *"The Republic Unsettled is invaluable not only for anthropologists and ethnographers but also for scholars wanting to deepen their understanding of how contemporary secularism functions as a theory of politics and society, including through its contradictions, tensions, inconsistencies, anxieties, and instabilities." -- Roshan A. Jahangeer * ReOrient *“By taking the debate away from the well-worn lines of whether or not ‘Muslims’ can be or are ‘integrated’ (in other words, whether or not Muslims are an unsettling presence or not in the republic), and by instead underlining how the republic itself is inherently ‘unsettled’, this book will no doubt rile many French secular republicans and become a key point of reference in future studies of the French Republic, laı¨cite´, and ‘non-normative’ identities.” -- Natalya Vince * French Studies *“The Republic Unsettled is a crucial and stimulating read for any scholar thinking about secularism and secularity, difference politics, contemporary France and Europe, and/or Western liberalism(s) and liberal (in)tolerance. The book (and especially its vivid, emotional, and purposeful introduction) can easily find resonance across a variety of social science, religion, and history disciplines.” -- Carol Ferrara * Journal of Church and State *“That her book ends with a legitimate comparison between William Connolly's notions of critical responsiveness and agonistic respect and the way in which her Muslim French interlocutors think shows that the history of colonization, immigration and the creation of diasporas does not have to lead to a conflict of civilizations or economically reductive globalization but can produce rich and complex hybrids or mouvements aberrants that can genuinely contribute to human progress. What The Republic Unsettled manages to convey is that those who seem marginal to the present could be central to a better future, and that is indeed a very remarkable achievement.” -- Nardina Kaur * Radical Philosophy *“The Republic Unsettled is a dense, but extremely well written book that exposes and 'unsettles,' as the title indicates, secular republicanism by laying bare its numerous inconsistences and paradoxes. … In the aftermath of the Charlie Hebdo shootings, which has issued in an uncritically and self-gratulatory reinvigoration of secular republicanism in France, accompanied by a dramatic increase in anti-Muslim violence, Mayanthi Fernando’s book is more timely and urgent than ever.” -- Jeanette S. Jouili * Journal of the Society for Contemporary Thought and the Islamicate World *"Because Fernando makes a lucid argument based on extended ethnography and sophisticated reading in political theory, The Republic Unsettled will surely be read widely by all those engaged in thinking about the politics of diversity in Europe." -- John R. Bowen * American Ethnologist *"I offer the highest praise for The Republic Unsettled: it is a beautifully written book that readers will be eager to continue discussing long after they finish it." -- Jennifer Fredette * Anthropos *Table of ContentsAcknowledgments vii Introduction 1 Field Notes I: "Vive la Republique Plurielle" 29 1.
