    15 in stock

Book SynopsisThe Thistle Tartan mini notebook is made from genuine tartan cloth and celebrates the thistle - the emblem and flower of Scotland. The colours are two shades of dark purple, dark green, turquoise, burgundy and charcoal. The thistle tartan is one of Kinloch Anderson's house tartans and part of Waverley's Scottish Traditions range. The famous prickly plant has many varieties that grow in Scotland, and the thistle has been used as an important symbol in heraldry for over 500 years. This mini notebook contains a retractable pen and an inner note holder at the back. Early weavers used local plants and natural products for their dyes so the locality of the weaver affected the colours of the local tartan. The genuine tartan cloth used for this notebook is supplied by and produced with the authority of Kinloch Anderson Scotland. Commonplace notebooks date back to the Scottish Enlightenment. Many thinkers and writers used a Commonplace notebook for writing down ideas and knowledge. Adam Smith, Robert Burns, David Hume, and later, writers such as Sir Walter Scott, Arthur Conan Doyle, and Virginia Woolf used commonplace notebooks. This mini notebook has an elastic closure, ribbon marker, eight perforated end leaves, and an expandable inner note holder. The notebook also has a retractable pen. (Pen barrel colour may vary from that illustrated.)

  • Lissa

    University of Toronto Press Lissa

    5 in stock

Book SynopsisAs young girls in Cairo, Anna and Layla strike up an unlikely friendship that crosses class, cultural, and religious divides. Years later, Anna learns that she may carry the hereditary cancer gene responsible for her mother's death. Meanwhile, Layla's family is faced with a difficult decision about kidney transplantation. Their friendship is put to the test when these medical crises reveal stark differences in their perspectives...until revolutionary unrest in Egypt changes their lives forever. The first book in a new series, Lissa brings anthropological research to life in comic form, combining scholarly insights and accessible, visually-rich storytelling to foster greater understanding of global politics, inequalities, and solidarity.Trade Review"Revolution is as intimate as family and as mammoth as regime change in this graphic novel focused on the 2011 Tahrir Square demonstrations. This is the book's greatest strength: its belief in decency, even amidst violence and trauma. Its hopeful mood is mirrored by the book's rounded, flowing visuals: Bandages flutter like hair ribbons, water sluices down Anna's surgical scars, and Layla's eyes are wide as she tends to the grievously wounded. This is a chronicle of conflict, to be sure, but it is also a tribute to persistence of friendship and the power of a people united." -- Publishers Weekly"Whether you read Lissa to educate yourself about health issues or research methods, or you just want to find out what happens to Layla and Anna, this graphic novel shows the huge and still untapped potential of comics for use in medicine and global health." -- The Lancet"In Lissa, Hamdy, Nye, their artists Bao, Brewer, and Parenteau show us how we can collaboratively transform anthropology’s ways of seeing and communicating depth and nuance in our ethnographies. As the first publication in the new ethnoGRAPHIC series from University of Toronto Press, Lissa sets a high bar and positive tone for what we can expect from this series. Like most great books, Lissa allows the reader to bring different meanings and needs to the book, engaging them in multiple conversations that explore the ways in which we are connected." -- Somatosphere"The complexity of the various ethical and medical dilemmas gives the work depth and pathos without making the arguments appear didactic. It is indeed the ethnographic research—the minor characters and their voices—that give the book its special strength." -- Parismita Singh, graphic novelist, Medical Anthropology Quarterly"With the University of Toronto’s imprimatur and its ethnoGRAPHIC series, surely there are no more excuses not to expand what counts as professional, promotion-worthy ethnography. And Lissa offers a fantastic model of how to proceed. Congratulations to its visionary authors and editors." -- Lochlann Jain, Medical Anthropology Quarterly"…offers slices of contrasting Egyptian and American biomedicines and uses the characters’ dilemmas to pry open the contradictions within and between these medical systems." -- Stacy Leigh Pigg, Medical Anthropology QuarterlyLissa is an eminently teachable text, and it was clearly designed with the classroom in mind. -- Christine Sargent, Anthropology Book Forum"The storytelling in LISSA is innovative in the sense that it shows people’s lives without resorting to broad stroke generalizations. The novel also nicely covers key aspects of cyber-activism, social media and texting - tools that were instrumental in communicating during the revolution." -- Eduard Cousin"Through its story of intercultural friendship and its backstory of international and interdisciplinary collaboration, Lissa invites us to take an unusual – fictional, graphic- and highly original path to the heart of the ethnographic encounter. It is a journey I am excited to take with my students, and I look forward to seeing the next titles in the ethnographic series." -- Martha Radice, Dalhousie University * Anthropologica 60, 2018 *"As the debut of a new editorial series (ethnoGRAPHIC) that aims at promoting long-form ethnographic accounts into comic form, Lissa is without a doubt an editorial break-through that helps to bring balance to an otherwise dominantly textual field." -- Kim Tondeur * Anthropos *“Lissa intertwines academic knowledge and storytelling, Egypt and the United States, as well as the private sphere in which individuals/families make medical decisions and the public sphere in which health care systems operate, governments govern (or fail to do so), and citizens rebel against governments. The outcome, as academic and non-academic reviewers unanimously attest, is a highly informative yet readable and engrossing book.” -- Dominika Ferens, University of Wroclaw * Lublin Studies in Modern Languages and Literature *"I have nothing but admiration for this book. The story is compelling—even a page turner. Moreover, it is informative, historically and culturally situated and uplifting—or, at least, it ends on a hopeful note—teaching hard truths, or glimpses of them, in an accessible and digestible way." -- Shelly Errington, Anthropology NowTable of ContentsForeword: Lissa: A Still Life in Motion by Paul Karasik Lissa: A Story about Medical Promise, Friendship, and Revolution Afterword: Comics and Ethnography by George Marcus Appendix 1: Timeline of the Egyptian Revolution Appendix 2: Teaching Lissa: Reading Guide and Theoretical Context Appendix 3: Making Lissa: ethnoGRAPHIC Fieldnotes

Book SynopsisFinding biopolitics unable to adequately reveal the mechanisms of power that govern contemporary life, Elizabeth A. Povinelli offers "geontopower" as a new theory of power that operates through the regulation of clear distinctions between life and nonlife.Trade Review"Geontologies is a dense work that resists being described in telegraphic terms, based as it is in dazzling and far-reaching theoretical and philosophical readings. But Povinelli’s key concepts of 'geontology' and 'geontopower' are an invaluable contribution to our much-needed critical lexicon, [and] the concepts and modes of engagement presented in Geontologies, though firmly rooted in the experience and particular governance of Australian settler late liberalism, demand to be taken up and translated in other contexts." -- Shela Sheikh * Avery Review *"Geontologies may well inspire new possibilities for thinking, relating and being." -- Eve Vincent * Australian Aboriginal Studies *“Geontologies is a challenging, exhilarating, and terrifying read. Challenging and exhilarating for all those interested in what deep ethnographic inquiry has to offer to a broad range of contemporary philosophy and social theory. And terrifying and exhilarating for those who find themselves asking whether the drama of Life’s possible extinction really matters.” -- Andrea Muehlebach * Anthropological Quarterly *"Short, conceptually packed . . . a rewarding read that will keep reverberating." -- Mario Blaser * Journal of Anthropological Research *"Geontologies contributes valuably . . . offering a sophisticated account of the Australian context as well as analytic tools and vocabulary to continue the work elsewhere." -- Zoe Power & Kirsten McIlveen * Social & Cultural Geography *Table of ContentsAcknowledgments x 1. • Life and Death on the New York Dance Floor

Duke University Press Life and Death on the New York Dance Floor

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisIn Life and Death on the New York Dance Floor Tim Lawrence examines the city's party, dance, music, and art culture between 1980 and 1983, tracing the rise, apex, and fall of this inventive, vibrant, and tumultuous scene.Trade Review"Lawrence goes into remarkable depth to portray this world which, during its few short years, gained expansive popularity and had a significant impact on art, film, literature, and culture. His meticulous research, with details on the leading figures, trends, events, places, and music that made it all happen, also provides critical/analytical commentary on the social backdrop of the times, the genesis of the emerging and eclectic music/dance styles, and the essence of this artistic renaissance. In addition to the well-selected photographs, notes, and bibliography, set lists, discographies, and a filmography add to the title's impressive breadth. Cultural historians and those familiar with the 1980s milieu will find this informative and insightful." -- Carol J. Binkowski * Library Journal *"Through a comprehensive and lushly detailed text stuffed with original photos from dance floors, DJ booths, and parties, Lawrence imparts the mood, the music, the faces and the places from that remarkable era, with a nostalgic nod to nights where 'a new kind of freedom was set to rule the night.' ... Dance music historians will want this book for reference, while others who recall these days with a sense of longing will close its covers and dream of the days when nightlife amounted to a line of cocaine, a Madonna remix, and a dark, packed dance floor in a basement club in the Village." -- Jim Piechota * Bay Area Reporter *"Life and Death provides the most intensive mapping of this brief era of New York subculture we've yet seen. The book's strength is its depth of research, drawing on the realtime journalism of the era as well as many new interviews. The detail is fascinating, as Lawrence salvages ephemeral events, forgotten people, and lost places from the fog of faded memory." -- Simon Reynolds * Bookforum *"Exceptionally accessible (the author’s passion for his subject shows through on every page; it’s easy to imagine how his knowledge and genuine interest opened many a door and got people talking, telling tales recorded here that might not otherwise have seen the light of day), the raw, new energy of the city is accurately captured and conveyed. No small feat.... Seriously, when’s the last time you read a book you could actually dance to?" -- Tom Cardamone * Lambda Literary Review *"The focus here is clearly music. Mr. Lawrence even includes some D.J. playlists for the listener to investigate. But Life and Death is more expansive than that — it takes you deep into a time and place, the good-old-bad-old-days of pre-Rudolph Giuliani New York, which many have valorized for some time now. If the 1970s have been thoroughly examined, the early ’80s have been left relatively unexplored, and while Mr. Lawrence provides a lot of minutiae, he also delivers a story with some sweep." -- Michaelangelo Matos * New York Times *"[I]f you have no abiding love for New York, disco, hip-hop, studio techniques, or fast and dirty real-estate shuffles—there must be such people, statistically—perhaps Life and Death on the New York Dance Floor will not hold you. But if you care for any of those things, and even if that concern borders on the obsessive, you will benefit from Lawrence’s investigations." -- Sasha Frere-Jones * The New Yorker *"The cast of characters in the book can be staggering, the exhaustive accounts overwhelming — Lawrence interviewed or corresponded with more than 130 people, and he makes room for their voices — but that's part of the point: He wants a crowded and motley party. This is a scrupulously researched, marvelously detailed history." -- Megan Pugh * Village Voice *"[A] compelling tale, beautifully told. As one who was fortunate enough to have landed in New York during this timeframe, Lawrence does a cracking job capturing a time when even listening to the city’s black radio stations at noon could change your life. It was a surreal, magical period of ground-breaking activity which now seems hard to believe could actually happen at the same time in the same city. Finally, here’s the proof." -- Kris Needs * Record Collector *"[O]ffers fresh detail and insight on the clubs, DJs, parties and recordings that emerged from the scene. He even offers DJ playlists from different clubs." -- Andy Beta * Wall Street Journal *"Tim Lawrence's Life and Death on the New York Dance Floor 1980-1983, the definitive history of that fabled time in the city, is already taking on the status of a sacred text." -- David Hershkovits * Paper Magazine *"Reading Life and Death on the New York Dance Floor as a clubber in the city is to reflect not only on what’s been lost over the past three decades, but on how the sounds, events and characters at the center of Lawrence’s story still influence NYC’s nightlife. . . . [W]hat Life and Death on the New York Dance Floor makes acutely obvious, as both volume and prism, is not just the cultural value of the city’s party scene, but how it also serves as a moral compass – and how it still can." -- Piotr Olov * The Guardian *"Life & Death defines New York's unnamed era of invention. When Boy George was nicking from the cloakroom at Blitz, and everyone else was at The Batcave, this is how it ran in NYC. With hundreds of interviews, deep research and enlightening playlists, it's almost as invigorating as being there." * DJ Magazine *"Lawrence has mustered convincing evidence for the case that Madonna was not the most important cultural creation of early 1980s New York. . . . Lawrence is most convincing when he documents the remarkable variety and genre-blurring fecundity of sounds available to tuned-in city dwellers, a diversity that was even more bracing when contrasted with the monotonous airwaves stifling the rest of North America." -- Robert Anasi * TLS *"Life and Death on the New York Dance Floor is a remarkably intense piece of 'community history writing.' It breathes life into an iconic historical epoch and sociocultural scene without ever retreating into nostalgia or naive celebration. In fact, there's something unexpectedly electrifying about reading Lawrence's exceptionally well-researched historical studies. It is the sensation of remotely yet meaningfully becoming part of something hitherto only secretly known. One becomes slowly yet unequivocally aware of how that specific era's cultural and sociopolitical conditions, so thoroughly reconstructed in these works, resonate with the current sense of cultural and political impasse." -- Niels Van Tomme * The Wire *Table of ContentsPreface ix Acknowledgments xvii Introduction 1 Part I. 1980: The Recalibration of Disco 1. The essays are beautifully written, richly woven, and speak honestly to the challenges facing religious people in the 21st century."—Yoel Finkelman, Association of Jewish Libraries Reviews"A spirited call to moral action and social justice. . . . Held is not content with learning Torah. He insists that we must not only study the word of God; rather, we must both "hear and do."—Jonathan Kirsch, Jewish Journal"The Torah reading cycle provides the structure not just for the Jewish year but also for countless volumes of commentary on the biblical text, including Rabbi Shai Held's brilliant new two-volume collection The Heart of Torah, Essays on the Weekly Torah Portion."—Ilana Kurshan, Jewish Review of Books“The Heart of Torah is a stunning achievement: textually learned, theologically profound, ethically challenging, spiritually uplifting, and psychologically astute. If you want to know what it can mean to read the Torah today with your whole heart and your whole mind, read this book.”—Rabbi Sharon Brous, founder and senior rabbi at Ikar, Los Angeles“Shai Held deftly brings the wisdom of Torah to bear upon the contemporary human condition. Christians who read this book can discover fresh dimensions within the biblical text, see more clearly where there is common ground between Jews and Christians, and better grasp what it means to understand and live in this world as God’s world.”—Walter Moberly, professor of theology and biblical interpretation at Durham University“Shai Held is one of the most important teachers of Torah in his generation.”—Rabbi David Wolpe, author of David: The Divided HeartTable of ContentsForeword Acknowledgments A Note on Translations Introduction Genesis Bere’shit No. 1. Book SynopsisMadina Tlostanova traces how contemporary post-Soviet art mediates the post-Soviet human condition through analyses of art and through interviews with artists and writers, showing the important role that radical art plays in building new modes of thought and a decolonial future.Trade Review"Well researched and insightful. . . . Thought-provoking and compelling. . . . A valuable addition to any academic library that supports research in contemporary art, as well as institutions that support research in Slavic studies." -- Melanie E. Emerson * ARLIS/NA Reviews *"Madina Tlostanova's search for decolonial art in the unlikeliest of places, vividly illustrated and peppered with live and virtual interviews with the artists themselves, makes the theoretical claims of the first three chapters come to life in the best possible way. Any reader curious about why art matters in what is indeed stereotypically thought as 'the ruins of the Soviet empire,' even those for whom this is a first primer into the debates of 'post-' and 'de-,' would understand the point of keeping those debates alive." -- Anindita Banerjee * Russian Review *"The author’s theorizing on decoloniality and art hits the mark as an invigorated way to interpret the achievements of recent 'activist art' in and around the Russian Federation and important multi-media work from the former Soviet empire’s periphery … The results are diverse and illuminating. What will eventually emerge from 'the Soviet empire’s ruins'? Tlostanova does not prognosticate, rather she sets the stage for asking such questions in cogent, original, and revealing terms.” -- Matthew Jesse Jackson * Slavic Review *"More than anything else, What Does it Mean to be Post-Soviet? ultimately reads as an invitation to artists and thinkers from the post-socialist space to use their voice and inspire a more inclusive public sphere. In showing that regained critical awareness of heritage and affirming individual agency by giving a voice to imagination and affect are necessary conditions for countering narratives of oppression, Madina Tlostanova weaves what may become a model for critical theory of the 21st century." -- Toma Peiu * Anthropology of Eastern Europe Review *Table of ContentsAcknowledgments vii Introduction. • Being Given

    Stanford University Press Being Given

    5 in stock

Book SynopsisThis ambitious work engages several major philosophical genres. It responds to current discussions of the "gift," which lie on the frontier of literature, anthropology, and economics, notably in the work of Jacques Derrida, and offers a detailed critique of the basis on which those discussions have proceeded.Trade Review"Jean-Luc Marion has established himself as the leading phenomenologist of the day. The appearance of Being Given, the English translation of what is in my view the most important philosophical work of this important thinker, marks a milestone in the reception of Marion's work in English. A brilliant, complex and meticulous analysis of the whole range of phenomena surrounding giving, givenness, and the gift, culminating in the saturated phenomenon as the 'given par excellence,' Being Given, which was ten years in the making, will be the standard work in this field for an entire generation. Kosky's translation is superb. Altogether, a major publishing event."—John D. Caputo, Villanova University"Audacious and rigorous, Being Given is a signal contribution to modern thought. For Marion, phenomenology is concerned not with objects or even being but with givenness. Having clarified what phenomenology does, Marion brilliantly shows how it exceeds metaphysics and how it requires us to rethink the human subject in the most radical manner. At no time are we asked to call on revelation, yet every page of this luminous book has rich and inescapable implications for theology as well as philosophy."—Kevin Hart, Monash University"Being Given is . . . simply dazzling: it is a work of tremendous depth and highly original thought. . . . It's amazing how much Marion . . . has changed the landscape of phenomenology—or what we on this side of the Atlantic call 'continental philosophy of religion.'"—The Christian Century..."Marion's Being Given is a major event in contemporary phenomenology, which will be a major source of debate and inspiration for contemporary philosophy and theology."—The Year's Work in Critical and Cultural Theory
