  • Strandbeest. The Dream Machines of Theo Jansen

Taschen GmbH Strandbeest. The Dream Machines of Theo Jansen

    4 in stock

Book SynopsisFor seven years, photographer and artist Lena Herzog followed the evolution of a new kinetic species. Intricate as insects but with bursts of equine energy, the “Strandbeests,” or “beach creatures,” are the creation of Dutch artist Theo Jansen, who has been working for nearly two decades to generate these new life-forms that move, and even survive, on their own. Set to roam the beaches of Holland, the Strandbeests pick up the wind in their gossamer wings and spring, as if by metamorphosis, into action. As if it were blood, not the breeze, running through their delicate forms, they quiver, cavort, and trot against the sun and sea, pausing to change direction if they sense loose sand or water that might destabilize their movement. Coinciding with a traveling exhibition, Herzog’s photographic tribute captures Jansen’s menagerie in a meditative black and white, showcasing Jansen’s imaginative vision, as well as the compelling intersection of animate and inanimate in his creatures. The result is a work of art in its own right and a mesmerizing encounter not only with a very surrealist brand of marvelous, but also with whole new ideas of existence.Trade Review“They really do appear to be alive. Purposeful, resolute. They don’t fall into the uncanny valley that afflicts so many other robotic assaults on the absolutely lifelike… they almost seem to evince a soul.” * The New York Times Magazine *“Spectacular, mechanical, philosophical beauty all rolled up in the talents of a man who is both artist and artisan in the broader sense of both words.” * Forbes *

Book SynopsisFourteen sculptures of the distinguished Central Asian artist Erkin Mergenov constitute the subject matter of this book. The creative force of the sculptor produced the artifacts, which then inspired historians, theologians, philosophers and literary scholars to produce verbal' responses and meditations on original themes. The texts, which exemplify different cross-disciplinary approaches to art and sculpture, cover the 30-year span of the artist's career from Self-Portrait (1971) to Premonition (2001).

  • Traces of a Friendship: Alberto Giacometti

Scheidegger und Spiess AG, Verlag Traces of a Friendship: Alberto Giacometti

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisThis book is a unique and intimate portrait of one of the greatest artists of the 20th century. "With this volume I wish to document Giacometti's personality from a completely different standpoint. I do so using photographs taken almost continuously from 1943 up to the time of his death; these were the twenty years in which his art became well-known. Alberto Giacometti's nature, work and thoughts fascinated me and other friends tremendously. I was one of the lucky ones allowed to experience his life. My encounters with him, and the resulting photographs, were of a more intimate, personal sort. Giacometti was not a legend to me. I treasured his absolute will for freedom. He was often cunning and harsh with his judgements and opinions, yet at the same time sensitive. His contradictoriness - often described by others - to me represented an expression of his personality, fervent existence and presence. I loved and respected this man. I believe his work belongs among the most important works of the contemporary art scene." - Ernst Scheidegger.

  • Music of Pipilotti Rist's Pepperminta

Scheidegger und Spiess AG, Verlag Music of Pipilotti Rist's Pepperminta

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisPipilotti Rist is one of Europe's most renowned contemporary artists. Educated in commercial art, illustration, photography and audio-visual communications, she has been working as an artist since 1986. Rist has created a vast oeuvre of video/audio works that has been shown internationally in many solo exhibitions at important museums, such as the MoMA and the Centre Pompidou. "Pepperminta" is Rist's first motion picture, introducing a young lady, Pepperminta, who has set out to free humanity from bad moods and everyday routines. Amiably and naughtily she pursues her fantastic campaign against fear. Colour is the miraculous weapon of 'Pepperminta' and her allies that brings everything to life. The artist and musician Anders Guggisberg and the musician, sound designer and DJ Roland Widmer have written and recorded the soundtrack for "Pepperminta". Soft sounds and spurring rhythms, licking, clattering and knocking noises, tingling and rattling make the cheerful and exhilarating acoustic background to the colourful images. This small book includes an audio-CD with the original soundtrack of the film and features 25 catchy double-page colour film stills, brief texts introducing the film and the music, and a short interview with Pipilotti Rist.

  • Mask: In Present-Day Art

Scheidegger und Spiess AG, Verlag Mask: In Present-Day Art

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisMasks evoke scenes of carnival or African tribal rites, we may be thinking of death masks of famous people, theatre and fashion, cosplay, disguise, and of protection. They represent some of the most ancient and most controversial objects of our cultural history. Today's artists look beyond the mere object, they are interested also in the social, cultural, and political meanings of masks. This book, published in conjunction with an exhibition at Aargauer Kunsthaus Aarau in fall 2019, explores their appearances in contemporary art. Artists at all times have been attracted by masks and their symbolism. Through works by distinguished Swiss and international artists and concise texts the book demonstrates manifold approaches to the topic of masks. With contributions by Yasmin Afschar, Daniel Berndt, Hendrik Bundtge, Emily Butler, Wendy Chang, Michelle Cotton, Peter Fischer, Claire Hoffmann, Olivier Kaeser, Melitta Kliege, Susanna Koeberle, Elsy Lahner, Leo Lencses, Bettina Muhlebach, Lena Nievers, Lucia Rey, Hermant Sareen, Joerg Scheller, Madeleine Schuppli, Angela Strecken, and Thomas D. • HMKV Video of the Month: HMKV AUSSTELLUNGSMAGAZIN

DruckVerlag Kettler HMKV Video of the Month: HMKV AUSSTELLUNGSMAGAZIN

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisEvery month, the art association HMKV presents the latest videos by international artists in its series “HMKV Video of the Month” which has been ongoing since March 2014. The idea for the series came from the desire to show the newest artistic productions in rapid succession, changing works at a faster pace than in the exhibitions of the HMKV. For the first time, this publication unites all 78 works that have been exhibited since 2014. The videos address a variety of different topics and stories, ranging from labour conditions, structural changes, speculative technologies, or posthuman machines to technology (and its history) as well as artificial intelligence. A wide array of works is devoted to the old ‘new’ right-wingers and the alt-right. The book not only shows stills of all videos, but each work is also accompanied by an introductory text to provide a comprehensive overview. Text in English and German.

JOVIS Verlag Vertauschte Köpfe: Konrad Mühe, Andreas Mühe

    1 in stock

    4 in stock

Book SynopsisThe fact that the entire history of culture and technology could represent a single, continuous expulsion of mankind from the original, paradiese state of nature was already described visionarilyin the Bible and predicted with all its positive and negative consequences. Everyone knows the story of Adam and Eve, of their 'Fall' and their 'Expulsion from Paradise'. Even as a non-Christian it is worth taking a look at the fairytale-like-mythic text of the Old Testament, although the picture and the process completely contradict our current scientific findings. One would almost be inclined to assume that the idea of a primeval paradise is innate in all human beings and that every human being with his becoming, his birth, his childhood and his adulthood experiences something like a Genesis. He is born innocent and helpless, wakes up, looks around, believes to be free, gets to know his time, his surroundings, his life. The final expulsion of every human being from life is his death. He is a sentenced to death. Despite all religious promises, man has always been aware of this fact, also of the fact that he has only this one life and that he ultimately cannot count on the hope that beyond this life there is something that could be called 'salvation', a happy return to the Garden of Eden. As the book shows with numerous, primarily European examples, the history of man is therefore full of efforts to regain here and now the lost paradise, no matter how precarious the result may be. In search of the lost paradises: a somewhat unusual history of man in his relationship to nature, followed by a description of the current state of landscape planning and garden design. In the third, concluding part of the book, the author develops new, strangely surreal and poetic concepts of the treatment of nature, inspired by literature, film, theatre and tourism.Hans Dieter Schaal, born in Ulm in 1943, is an architect, landscape architect, stage designer and exhibition designer. His works, the majority of which have been published by the Axel MengesEdition, have meanwhile reached an audience far beyond his in my homeland. The author lives and works in a village near Biberach an der Riss.

  • Ikora Metalwork by WMF

    Arnoldsche Ikora Metalwork by WMF

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisThis publication draws on sales catalogues and advertising brochures documenting the entire range of Ikora metalwork produced by WMF (W rttembergische Metallwarenfabrik AG, Geislingen) from the early 1920s until the 1960s. Even during the first world war, Hugo Debach, who would later become director-general of WMF, took the initiative in having experiments conducted in chemical and thermal tinting of metals. Shortly before 1927 he founded the Neue Kunstgewerbliche Abteilung (NKA: New Division for the Applied Arts) at WMF for upgrading metals. The brilliant colours and the boundless possibilities for design arising from this new technique met with resounding success at the time. Now pieces of Ikora metalwork by WMF are coveted as valuable collectors' items. The name Ikora, borrowed from a plant with brilliantly-hued flowers endemic to South-east Asia and sacred to the goddess Ixora, was designed to express the costly and exclusive quality of this line in metal products. Book SynopsisFor almost 20 years, the artist and goldsmith Peter Bauhuis has been exploring a technique for which as yet there are hardly any references. Applying experimental curiosity and creative materials research, he has since worked on the simultaneous casting of different metals, plumbing the depths of the materials' limitations. He plays with chance, directing it so that the vessels emerge in ever new variations. As the metals oxidize, gradations of colour emerge on the objects' surfaces, bringing to mind abstract drawings. The Hamburg-based photographer Hans Hansen, regarded as one of the most important product and still life photographers, has taken his own unique look at the objects, staging 18 current vessel works from Peter Bauhuis's Simultanea series.Text in English and German.

  • Liam Gillick - Proxemics: Selected Writings

JRP Editions Liam Gillick - Proxemics: Selected Writings

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisNo less versatile in his writing than in his installations, films, architecture and sculpture, Liam Gillick unites his critical essays in this collection, most of which were originally printed in art magazines or exhibition catalogues. Lauded for his ingenious reinterpretation of Conceptual and Minimalist art, Liam Gillick has often used language, whether in type on a wall or on a page, as a site of artistic, theoretical and political intervention. He reveals himself here as a witness of and major actor in the largely European 1990s art scene that included Philippe Parreno, Pierre Huyghe, Carsten H?ller, Angela Bulloch, Douglas Gordon and Rirkrit Tiravanija. A key publication of discussions, references, and artistic engagements of the 1990s, the book also allows an examination of the renewed importance at this time of Felix Gonzalez-Torres, John Baldessari and Allen Ruppersberg.

Book SynopsisA clothbound appraisal of the Swiss artist's enigmatic architecture-sculptures, driven by his longstanding impulse to construct sheltersThis stylishly produced book documents the architecture-sculptures of Swiss artist Not Vital's (b. 1948) vast oeuvre. Throughout the world, Vital has worked on a series of grand works that skirt the boundary between sculpture and architecture. Driven by an impulse to build shelters that he traces back to childhood, Vital has traveled to Niger, Chile, Belgium, Brazil, Indonesia and the Philippines to construct responsive habitats that integrate themselves into the communities in which they are built. For example, his House to Watch the Sunset, a tower-like structure that is at once ancient and futuristic, is built out of local materials sourced in Brazil, Niger and Switzerland. In addition to these projects, Not Vital: Scarch contains sketches for structures, srudio shots, concepts for future works and sculptures related to the projects.
