Lexington Books Moral Constraints on War
Book SynopsisThis third edition of Moral Constraints on War offers a principle by principle presentation of the ethics of war as is found in the age-old tradition of the Just War. Parts one and two trace the evolution of Just War Theory, analyzing the principles of jus ad bellum and jus in bello: the principles that determine the conditions under which it is just to start a war and then conduct military operations. Each chapter provides a historical background of the principle under discussion and an in-depth analysis of its meaning. More so than in the previous editions, there is a special focus on the transcultural nature of the principles. Besides theoretical clarifications, each of the principles is also put to the test with numerous historical and contemporary examples. In Part three, Just War Theory is applied in three specific case studies: the use of the atomic bomb against Japan in World War II, the Korean War (1950-53), and the use of armed drones in the war on terror. Bringing together aTrade Review“This classic book is deservedly in its third, reinforced, and re-vitalized edition. Bloomsbury Publishing PLC El Generalisimo
Book SynopsisA definitive new biography of General Franco that offers a new insight into his lasting legacy in Spain. From a scrawny, overlooked military graduate to the youngest general in Europe, Francisco Franco was known for his ambition, talent and calculated risk-taking. Yet his reputation remains a topic of fierce debate. Did he destroy Spain and stifle its democracy or rescue the nation from left-wing tumult? In this compelling biography, Giles Tremlett unravels the complex life and legacy of the enigmatic dictator who shaped twentieth-century Spanish history. This book will delve into the complexities of Franco's character, exploring his volatile relationship with a domineering father, his traumatic experiences fighting in Morocco and the formation of his authoritarian ideology. The narrative follows Franco's ruthless leadership during the Civil War, his alignment with Hitler and Mussolini and the subsequent Cold War era that brought him international rehabilitation. Tremlett interrogates Franco's transformation of Spain through a lens that challenges the conventional view of him as a bumbling leader. Instead, arguing that Franco was a deliberate and pragmatic dictator who wielded terror to maintain an iron grip on power, and whose lasting (and most surprising) contribution was the period of peace that allowed Spain to challenge the absolutist spirit he embodied. Nuanced and comprehensive, El Generalísimo offers a fresh perspective that reveals the intricate interplay of ambition and fearlessness of Francisco Franco; and examines his enduring legacy that continues to shape Spain's political and cultural landscape. PRAISE FOR GILES TREMLETT:'Tremlett's work will bring many who think we know Spain to confront what we have hesitated to acknowledge even to ourselves' Matthew Parris'Tremlett writes with humour, modesty and a great affection for his subject' Daily Telegraph'Tremlett is a fascinating socio-cultural guide' Guardian

Yellow Pear Press Adaptive Training: Building a Body That's Fit for
Book SynopsisEvolutionary Lifestyle Fitness Strategies for All #1 New Release in Physical Education and Stretching Exercise & FitnessAdaptive Training explores an alternate perspective on health and fitness focusing on how we are a product of the environment. So change your surroundings to maximize your health and fitness beyond the gym.Explore your amazingly adaptable body. Tight hip flexors, rounded shoulders and a hunched back are all products of our daily lifestyles. We are adaptoids; our bodies are designed to adapt to our surroundings, and understanding this is the key to unlocking perfect performance. Adaptive Training takes you through the fundamentals of understanding adaptive training while providing a detailed physical fitness program to help you build an environment that facilitates a healthy and empowering new lifestyle fitness journey with new lifestyle fitness equipment.Unlock your true potential. The best way to learn a language is through immersion, and the same is true for developing and maintaining a new lifestyle fitness. A few hours a week training at the gym or elsewhere is great, but what if your environment outside of the gym is also challenging your body? You will see results that are only possible through the innovative fitness method called “Adam” which stands for Adaptive Immersion Training. Change your environment with intent, and your body will adapt with amazing results.Inside, you’ll learn: How the environment shapes your body to be adaptive How and why you should divide training throughout the day The missing fundamentals of human movement and lifestyle fitness equipment If you liked Built from Broken, The Comfort Crisis, or What Doesn’t Kill You, you’ll love Adaptive Training.Table of ContentsChapter 1: Your Amazing, Adaptable Body This will be a motivational section that discusses the amazing human body but specifically its ability to adapt and change. Chapter 2: How The Things You Do Everyday Shape Your Health and Fitness This will demonstrate that your job/hobbies/lifestyle are more instrumental in shaping your physique than an hour spent in the gym. It will thus discuss Chapter 3: Train Outdoors! This post will explain the HUGE and immediate benefits of moving your training outside. Simple example: every pull up from a tree branch is different from the last, engaging the grip differently, altering the heights of the hands, etc. etc. This chapter will also discuss the practicalities of such training (how to manage progressive overload, where to do it, what to do if it rains), plus the risk of training ONLY in chaotic environments and how to marry the benefits of both types of training. Chapter 4: The Missing Fundamentals of Human Movement Our modern lifestyles introduce a number of issues and rob us of some basic abilities: pelvis control, spine mobility, shoulder mobility, core strength, scapula control, straight-arm strength. This post will explore the precise missing attributes in the context of the ATSP hierarchy discussed in the previous book. Chapter 5: “SuperExercises” This chapter will introduce exercises specifically intended to remedy the above problem. The term “SuperExercise” is inspired by “SuperFood.” The idea is that these exercises either provide multiple benefits in one go, or they address a missing fundamental. Chapter 6: Don’t Let the Environment Change You: Change the Environment This chapter starts with a more in-depth exploration of the idea of the “Adaptation Facilitation Machine.” This is a building designed to challenge the body as we move through it. It’s only theoretical, but a fun thought experiment. It will then discuss ways you can make an existing environment more stimulating and challenging (standing desks as a very obvious example). It then concludes that “intent” and “habits” are more important – your relationship with the environment. It will thus suggest a number of ways to train incidentally. Chapter 7: Splitting Your Workouts This chapter discusses the benefits of splitting workouts up throughout the day: this can increase energy and mood, encourage muscle growth, and massively improve performance. It’s also more convenient for a lot of people. Chapter 8: An Active Brain This chapter applies many of the previously discussed concepts to brain training. Chapter 9: A Program This chapter offers a program based on the SuperExercises and splitting workouts into lots of smaller parts. One of the biggest criticisms of the previous book was the lack of an actual program – this should address that! Chapter 10: You Are Information A little indulgence! An alternative way to look at the body and its relationship with the environment.

Crecy Publishing Wings Over the Fleet
Book SynopsisThe Royal Navy emerged from the Second World War with the second largest fleet of aircraft carriers in the world and a year later had achieved the world''s first landing and take-off by a jet-powered aircraft from an aircraft carrier. The traditional roles of reconnaissance, aerial defence of the fleet and attack were joined by anti-submarine warfare (ASW) capabilities. Technological advances in jet propulsion and helicopters offered new tactical possibilities, as well as new practical problems to be overcome to enable their operation from carriers. From the early 1950s the Fleet Air Arm operated a wide range of aircraft, from fighter-bombers, such as the Hawker Sea Hawk, to fully fledged nuclear-armed Blackburn Buccaneers and all-weather fighters like the de Havilland Sea Vixen and McDonnell Douglas F-4K Phantom. Westland''s family of anti-submarine helicopters, the Wasp, Wessex, Sea King and Lynx operated from a wide range of ships, ranging from small frigates to carrier decks. Defence cutbacks that saw the retirement of the fleet carriers and the transfer of the Phantoms and Buccaneers in 1978, but the British Aerospace Sea Harrier operating from smaller anti-submarine carriers maintained the Navy''s fixed-wing combat capability, this being memorably demonstrated in the South Atlantic in 1982. Today, the Royal Navy operates two modern carriers and shares the aviation commitment with the Royal Air Force, flying the most modern fighter in the world, the vertical take-off and landing capable Lockheed Martin F-35B Lightning. Wings Over the Fleet describes the evolution and development of the Royal Navy''s frontline aircraft from the late 1940s to the present day. All the major types are covered, from all-weather fighters, interceptors, strike aircraft, anti-submarine helicopters and airborne early warning aircraft. The planning and requirements behind the aircraft such as the Sea Hawk, Sea Vixen, Buccaneer, Gannet, Wasp, Sea King and Sea Harrier are examined, as are many design studies and proposals that remained on the drawing board. Guided missiles during the post-war period and the evolution of the Royal Navy''s aircraft carriers and the new technologies required to operate jet aircraft from ships are also analysed.

Oneworld Publications Surgeon Scholar Chemist Quack
Book SynopsisDiscover the remarkable birth of modern medicine. When we imagine Renaissance medicine, the cliché is dreadful - unsterile instruments, a total lack of anaesthetics and shocking levels of infant and maternal mortality. And that’s before you get into astrology, bloodletting and a litany of bizarre ‘treatments’, more likely to kill than cure… As ever, the true picture is somewhat different. Here, in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, modern medicine began to take shape. Medical education was being formalised for the first time. Through dissections and hands-on experience in war, surgeons were documenting the intricacies of the human body and distributing their work across the continent. And, as European powers expanded their reach into the New World, new medicines and treatments were being discovered and cultivated. Historian Alanna Skuse ventures into the bustling medical marketplace of Renaissance England - a world of travelling surgeons, prosthetics’ craftsmen, faith healers and, of course, snake oil salesmen. There’s the domestic healer, her kitchen stocked with all manner of herbs, tonics and elixirs, ready to dole out to ailing neighbours; the expert midwife, called upon when the physician and surgeon failed; the trusted apothecary, shop stocked with remedies for every ailment and ingredients from each corner of the globe. Humane and entrancing, The Surgeon, The Midwife, The Quack reveals the miraculous birth of modern medicine.

Book SynopsisIn BLACK MEME, Legacy Russell, awardwinning author of the groundbreaking GLITCH FEMINISM, explores the meme as mapped to Black visual culture from 1900 to the present, mining both archival and contemporary media.Russell argues that without the contributions of Black people, digital culture would not exist in its current form. These meditations include the circulation of lynching postcards; why a mother allowed JET magazine to publish a picture of her dead son, Emmett Till; and how the televised broadcast of protesters in Selma changed the debate on civil rights. Questions of the media representation of Blackness come to the fore as Russell considers how citizen-recorded footage of the LAPD beating Rodney King became the first viral video. Why the Anita Hill hearings shed light on the media’s creation of the Black icon. The ownership of Black imagery and death is considered in the story of Tamara Lanier’s fight to reclaim the daguerreotypes of he

Search Press Ltd 100 Flowers to Knit & Crochet (new edition): A
Book SynopsisThis 15th anniversary edition of the best-selling book 100 Flowers to Knit and Crochet, with over 130,000 copies sold! An utterly delightful collection of designs for any knitting or crochet enthusiast, it not only includes the most beautiful flowers and leaves, but also a wonderful, whimsical collection of fruit and vegetables as well as butterflies. As most of the projects use only small amounts of yarn, it is the perfect way to use up scraps, or practise using novelty yarns. You can use them to decorate clothing, hats, bags and belts, embellish home accessories, or make a beautiful bouquet as an unusual display piece. There are so many flowers to choose from that there is sure to be something you will love, from simple spiral roses and two-tone fuchsias, to elaborate layered blooms and fabulous felted flowers. The flowers are beautifully arranged on the pages, with stitched leaves and embroidered stems, and are cross-referenced to a separate section featuring clear pattern instructions and information on yarn requirements. You will also find plenty of inspiration for embellishing your finished flowers with beads, buttons, sequins and embroidery. In addition, there are lots of ideas for using them in a range of fun ways, from unusual jewellery to decorating gift-wrapped packages. The patterns use UK crochet terms, with a US/UK conversion chart printed on the fold-out flap. Previously published as 9781844484034.Trade ReviewNature wins, especially in needlework popularity contests. In this fifteenth-anniversary edition, veteran needleworker Stanfield (The Knitter's Stitch Collection, 2021) recaps her take on translating flowers, fruits, and vegetables into yarn. Written in UK terminology (of note to crocheters), this collection first showcases finished items, then follows with technical instructions. Those directions include yarn specifications and methods, and, for crochet, instructions for how to make up (i.e. put together) and symbols, with further differentiation into beginning, intermediate, and advanced projects. Many of the pieces will be familiar (e.g. ladybug and acorn); others, less so (like Santolina and rudbeckia). A color portfolio of ten projects, without instructions, acts as a creative guide to using flowers and fruits for added design flourishes, on an evening handbag or winter scarf, for two examples. A standard for libraries that don’t already own this classic reference. -- Barbara Jacobs * Booklist *This is a really useful book for knitters and crocheters alike who would like to embellish their knitting or crocheting or have small projects to make. The pictures inspire one to try something new. The patterns are very clear and I like the fact that yarn weights are given rather than affiliating projects to a particular brand. The fold out flap with abbreviations is brilliant as a less experienced knitter or crocheter will not have to flip backwards and forwards to find out new terminology. This would be a great book to keep in your collection. -- Monica Russel * Monica Russel *Table of ContentsForeword/About this book 6 Before you begin 8 Materials and equipment 10, Crochet symbols 12, Abbreviations 14, Terminology and aftercare 15, Notes on knitting 16, Notes on crochet 18 Directory of flowers 20 Flowers 22, Leaves 42, Fruit and vegetables 44 Technical instructions 46 Knitting instructions, Basic designs 48, Intermediate designs 54, Advanced designs 62 Crochet instructions Basic designs 66, Intermediate designs 74, Advanced designs 92 Projects 108 Project 1 : Peg bag 110, Project 2: Evening handbag 112, Project 3: Stationery 114, Project 4: Christmas gift wrap 115, Project 5: Baby's cardigan 116, Project 6: Winter scarf 118, Project 7: Summer shoes 119, Project 8: Ruffles 120, Project 9: Place settings 122, Project 10: Shopping bag 124 Index 126 Resources and credits 128

Penguin Books Ltd The Anatomy of Fascism
Book SynopsisFascism was the major political invention of the twentieth century and the source of much of its pain. How can we try to comprehend its allure and its horror? Is it a philosophy, a movement, an aesthetic experience? What makes states and nations become fascist?Acclaimed historian Robert O. Paxton shows that in order to understand fascism we must look at it in action - at what it did, as much as what it said it was about. He explores its falsehoods and common threads; the social and political base that allowed it to prosper; its leaders and internal struggles; how it manifested itself differently in each country - France, Britain, the low countries, Eastern Europe, even Latin America as well as Italy and Germany; how fascists viewed the Holocaust; and, finally, whether fascism is still possible in today''s world.Offering a bold new interpretation of the fascist phenomenon, this groundbreaking book will overturn our understanding of twentieth-century history.
