Headline Publishing Group The Social Lives of Birds
Book Synopsis''A tour-de-force survey of how birds live their lives - with all the drama, surprise, humour, sadness and amazement of any human soap-opera'' - Stephen Moss, author of Ten Birds That Changed the World''Utterly fascinating . . . Strassmann is the perfect guide to this world: an author as much fascinated by the science and research as she is motivated by the sheer joy and wonder of the birds themselves'' - James Macdonald Lockhart, author of RaptorIn The Social Lives of Birds, evolutionary biologist Joan Strassmann examines what it means for birds of a feather to flock together. Some birds sleep together. Some join the foraging groups of other species. Some are only social during the breeding season, forming nesting colonies in trees, cliffs, and sandbanks. Some are altruistic, helping to rear young that are not their own. Some males perform mating dances together.Strassmann explains how flocks provide safety in numbers, roosts offer warmth and shelter, and colonies allow for protected breeding. But group behavior is not without its costs-including increased competition, infidelities, tick infestations, and more. Strassmann exposes the conflicts birds face and the many ways in which they resolve these conflicts. With stories of birds from around the world-from broad-winged hawks that migrate south together in the fall, tree swallows that roost together in the thousands, and tropical anis that nest in communes-The Social Lives of Birds explores the different kinds of bird groups and what to look for when watching them. Above all, it reveals that solitary life, it seems, is not for the birds.''Delightful and informative'' - Lee Dugatkin, author of How to Tame a Fox (and Build a Dog)

Murdoch Books Ester: Australian Cooking
Book Synopsis"If you want inspiration and to be offered an insight as to how to coax flavour into food, and an understanding of what cooking can be, and how to achieve this, then you are certain to greet this book with as much grateful glee as I do." Nigella Lawsonmake a fire. fake a fire. roast your oysters. dance for pipis. slow it down. raise a toast. take lunch. grill a salad. bake a crab. step outside. burn your pav. pass the salt. eat with your hands. chew on the bone.Ester is an invitation to play with your food and enjoy the adventure. It's born of an eponymous restaurant in inner Sydney, but it's proudly not a restaurant book. Think of it more as the foundations for some new ideas in your kitchen and at your table; written to be used, shared, read aloud, perhaps burnt.Mat Lindsay's cooking resists easy labels. Certainly it's a distinct kind of full-flavoured Australian food: generous, mindfully chosen seafood; darkly caramelised wood-fired bread; vegetables cooked to just the right level of doneness; meat that's been treated with respect and, often, time; and the odd burnt pavlova, a true signature. Ester the restaurant is all about its wood-fired oven and the magic it imparts, but the fundamentals don't change at home, and everything in this book can be made delicious wherever you live. The ethos of Mat's acclaimed and widely beloved Chippendale restaurant has always been to offer guests a no-rules good time and the intention within these pages is just the same. Whether it prompts you to rethink the possibilities of toast, roast your fruit, try the classic cauliflower, or embrace Sunday lunch, the Ester playbook presents many ideas to cook and live by.Trade Review"Never question anything Mat Lindsay does. Ever. He's a true genius, although the word is used so often it's become meaningless. But his particular mixture of sensibility, talent and devotional concentration is rare." - Nigella Lawson"Wow, what a book! Mat is a thoughtful, talented, humble chef and Ester is his laser-like thinking on food that just says, 'eat me'." - Neil Perry, Margaret, Sydney"Mat is a trailblazer, no question. Ester, with its open kitchen and grounding, earthy, nurturing wood fire, perfectly reflects his humility, warmth and originality." - Kylie Kwong, Lucky Kwong, Sydney"An insight into the much-loved restaurant Ester - an inspiration to chefs far and wide. Mat's unique ability to distill and coax flavour is presented beautifully and simply for anyone who loves to cook." - Andrew McConnell, Trader House restaurants, Melbourne"Mat has an uncanny ability to strike directly at the heart of what makes food so special. A seemingly simple approach that can only be obtained through the obsession with our craft and decades of dedication. A master of flavour and fire. Ester has always been the type of place that you just don't want to leave, and I'm so glad that I can take a bit of it home with this beautiful book." - Ren Redzepi, Noma, Copenhagen"Mat's a genius - Ester is the dream restaurant I wished I'd opened. This book is stunning, clever, approachable and smartly written. He's pulled that rare trick of creating a book based on a restaurant that's actually accessible to everyone and will inspire people to cook. He explains what the building blocks of dishes are and how to build confidence. I've no doubt this book will become as iconic as Ester is." - James Lowe, Lyle's, LondonTable of ContentsIntroductionBread and doughA toastEat with your handsSalads and vegetablesBuilding blocksSeafoodMeat and birdsThe long Sunday lunchThe great outdoorsSweet and not so sweetBreakfastAcknowledgementsConversions guideIndex

Holy Trinity Publications Healing Humanity: Confronting Our Moral Crisis
Book SynopsisWestern societies today are coming unmoored in the face of earth-shaking ethical and cultural paradigm shift. At its core is the question of what it means to be human and how we are meant to live. The old answers are no longer accepted; a dizzying array of options are offered in their stead. Underpinning this smorgasbord of lifestyles is a thicket of unquestioned assumptions, such as the separation of gender from biological sex, which not so long ago would have been universally rejected as radical notions. In the spring of 2019, a group of Orthodox Christian scholars drawn from a wide variety of academic disciplines met together to offer responses to the moral crisis our generation faces, elaborating upon its various forms and facilitating a fuller understanding of some of its theological and philosophical foundations. In doing so they offer support to all those who question the claims that are so forcefully insisted upon today – a clarity that will aid them in standing up and resisting trends that have already shown to be the cause of great suffering and unhappiness.Among the contributors to this volume are NY Times bestselling author Rod Dreher, Frederica Matthewes-Green, Dr David Bradshaw, Fr Chad Hatfield, and Fr Peter Heers. Collectively, these scholars remind us that it is only through our participation in the life of Christ, God who became man, that we can find the healing of our humanity through the restoration in us of His image, in which we were formed at the beginning of time.Table of ContentsPart One - Prognoses: Chastity, Purity, Integrity The Beauty of Chastity, Prof. David Bradshaw The Splendor of Purity, Frederica Mathewes-Green The Gnosticism of Modernity and the Quest for Radical Autonomy, Prof. Bruce Seraphim Foltz Gnosis, Techne, Hedone(Erudition, Technology, Pleasure): Contemporary secular Anthropological Assumptions,Dr. Gaelan Gilbert Christian Bioethics: Challenging Secular Assumptions, Prof. Mark Cherry Hierarchy, Inequality, and the Mystery of Male and Female, Prof. Mary Ford The Mystery of Male and Female, Masculine and Feminine: Whys, Wherefores, and Warnings, Prof. Edith Humphrey Part Two - Remedies: Moral, Pastoral, and Social Acquiring an Orthodox Ethos, Archpriest Peter Heers ICXC NIKA: The Liberty ofTheosis, Dr. Alfred Kentigern Siewers Twenty-Six Foundations for Centering the Lives of our Youth in Purity, Chastity, and Integrity, Prof. David C. Springer Nature Switzerland AG Fintech, Small Business & the American Dream: How
Book SynopsisSmall businesses are the backbone of the U.S. economy. They are the biggest job creators and offer a path to the American Dream. But for many, it is difficult to get the capital they need to operate and succeed. In the Great Recession, access to capital for small businesses froze, and in the aftermath, many community banks shuttered their doors and other lenders that had weathered the storm turned to more profitable avenues. For years after the financial crisis, the outlook for many small businesses was bleak. But then a new dawn of financial technology, or “fintech,” emerged. Beginning in 2010, new fintech entrepreneurs recognized the gaps in the small business lending market and revolutionized the customer experience for small business owners. Instead of Xeroxing a pile of paperwork and waiting weeks for an answer, small businesses filled out applications online and heard back within hours, sometimes even minutes. Banks scrambled to catch up. Technology companies like Amazon, PayPal, and Square entered the market, and new possibilities for even more transformative products and services began to appear. In Fintech, Small Business & the American Dream, former U.S. Small Business Administrator and Senior Fellow at Harvard Business School, Karen G. Mills, focuses on the needs of small businesses for capital and how technology will transform the small business lending market. This is a market that has been plagued by frictions: it is hard for a lender to figure out which small businesses are creditworthy, and borrowers often don’t know how much money or what kind of loan they need. New streams of data have the power to illuminate the opaque nature of a small business’s finances, making it easier for them to weather bumpy cash flows and providing more transparency to potential lenders.Mills charts how fintech has changed and will continue to change small business lending, and how financial innovation and wise regulation can restore a path to the American Dream. An ambitious book grappling with the broad significance of small business to the economy, the historical role of credit markets, the dynamics of innovation cycles, and the policy implications for regulation, Fintech, Small Business & the American Dream is relevant to bankers, fintech investors, and regulators; in fact, to anyone who is interested in the future of small business in America. Trade Review“Karen Mill’s outstanding new book: FinTech, Small Business & the American Dream, a smart, savvy, and useful landscape of lending, fintech, and small business. Mills knows how the engine of small business powers the U.S. and her recommendations about how to sustain it through technology are thoughtful and direct. Her observations about how small banks can anchor communities are especially astute and important.” (Lawrence Gennari, Boston Business Journal, August 30, 2019)Table of Contents
