Watkins Media Limited The Repeater Book of Heroism
Book Synopsis"I don't have any heroes, they're all useless", opined John Lydon in 1976. As a spokesperson of sorts for the punk generation, Lydon was giving voice to a nihilistic, deconstructive impulse which, for better or worse, would go on to dominate the next half-century or so of intellectual, cultural and political life. But isn't one of the problems with the modern world that we no longer have any real sense of what heroism is? What if we recovered heroism from the hands of the fascists and the neoliberal ideologues, and proclaimed that - despite everything - a hero can and should be something to be? In these personal, provocative essays, the authors behind the uncompromising project that is Repeater Books come together to redefine the idea of the hero for a twenty-first-century public which desperately needs something to believe in. From Eric Cantona to Wile E Coyote, Bruno Latour to Paula Rego, forgotten legends and anonymous family members, this compendium of extraordinary human behaviour is essential reading for anyone who has ever thought that, despite what Jean-Paul Sartre said, heaven is other people.Trade Review"An unashamed celebration of the everyday heroic. Read and be inspired."

Hodder & Stoughton Alice
Book Synopsis''In 1953, at the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II, Princess Alice was dressed from head to foot in a long gray dress and a gray cloak, and a nun''s veil. Amidst all the jewels, and velvet and coronets, and the fine uniforms, she exuded an unworldly simplicity. Seated with the royal family, she was a part of them, yet somehow distanced from them. Inasmuch as she is remembered at all today, it is as this shadowy figure in gray nun''s clothes...''Princess Alice, mother of Prince Phillip, was something of a mystery figure even within her own family. She was born deaf, at Windsor Castle, in the presence of her grandmother, Queen Victoria, and brought up in England, Darmstadt, and Malta. In 1903 she married Prince Andrew of Greece and Denmark, and from then on her life was overshadowed by wars, revolutions, and enforced periods of exile. By the time she was thirty-five, virtually every point of stability was overthrown. Though the British royal family remained in th

EnvelopeBooks Belle Nash and the Bath Circus
Book SynopsisAt the end of his last adventure (Belle Nash and the Bath Souffle), Belle Nash was banished for four years to the island of Grenada. It is now 1835, and Belle has returned to Bath, glad to be back but pained by the absence of his most recent Caribbean love. His heartache leads to confusions when he meets Pablo Fanque, the Black equestrian acrobat from Norfolk who longs to set up his own circus. As a well-loved figure in Bath, Belle uses his influence to try and help, but has to run the gauntlet of Lord Servitude, the most hated man in England and a die-hard supporter of slavery. As ever, William Keeling's whimsical tale brings Belle, his gay hero, into a situation where comedy does not obscure stark moral issues to do with prejudice and bigotry that are as alive today as they were in Regency times.Trade ReviewOf the author's first novel: 'A real romp of a book - full of surprises!' (Alexander McCall Smith). 'Funny, clever, silly in the right way, and strangely moving in its unexpected ending. I love the alt-Regency Bath universe Keeling has built' (Jeanette Winterson). 'By turns incisive, outlandish and hilarious! ... There's a brilliance in The Gay Street Chronicles, half-modern, half-Dickensian' (Matthew Parris). 'Bravo! A rollicking tale of corruption, intrigue and romance. A racy read!' (Peter Tatchell). 'An unputdownable Regency frolic!' (Jane Ridley). 'A triumph!' (Michael Holman)

Hodder & Stoughton The Narrow Path
Book Synopsis''This is Rich Villodas at his pastoral best. His writing shimmers with grace, reflecting the radiance of a kingdom vision of the good life.''-GLENN PACKIAM''This book is a much-needed heart checkup for every Jesus follower.''-CHRISTINE CAINE''A book for all who are interested, intrigued, and deeply drawn to the possibility of Jesus and his narrow way.''-JOHN MARK COMER''In The Narrow Path, Rich is telling a biography of Jesus - the Divine One who not only clears the way, teaches the way, and shows the way, but is the Way. The path is narrow because it is only as wide as the person of Christ. But it is big enough for everyone''s unique journey of life because he is the saviour of all.''-JUSTIN WELBY, ARCHBISHOP OF CANTERBURYWe live in a culture that wants it all. More is seen as better - whether it''s more money, social media fame, more choices, or power. For those chasing this way of life, ''narrow'' seems negative. Who wants to narrow their options, or be seen as narrow-minded? Which is why the most well-known talk in history - the Sermon on the Mount - is also the most paradoxical. In it, Jesus holds up the narrow path as the most spacious ... and the broader path as the more confining one.Rich Villodas, bestselling author of The Deeply Formed Life, helps us to diagnose whether we are following the broad or narrow path, in order to help us pursue the way of Jesus more deeply. The Narrow Path reintroduces the counterintuitive wonder of Jesus''s timeless wisdom for this age, one fraught with anxiety, depression, polarizing politics, and online vitriol. The path of Jesus is most certainly narrow, but it is the only one filled with the ever-expanding life of God . . . and it is available now for all who want it!

FUEL Publishing 226 Garages and Service Stations
Book SynopsisSmall garages and service stations are a vital but fast disappearing part of Britain's automotive landscape. Often independently owned and sited in idiosyncratic buildings, they are rightfully celebrated and sensitively documented in this essential book. You might use a local garage to change a tyre or replace your exhaust, but when was the last time you pulled over and took a good look at the building itself? In the spirit of Ed Ruscha's Twentysix Gasoline Stations (1963), photographer Philip Butler has done just that. Over six years, he's travelled the length and breadth of Britain photographing these diverse, eccentric and idiosyncratic buildings. As motoring became popular in the early 1900s, the need for mechanical expertise to service, repair, refuel, and sell vehicles soared and the garage' was born. From the Mock-Tudor fad of the 1920s via the Streamline Moderne of the 1930s, to the simple Modernist rationalism of postwar Britain, each era has produced a distinct automotive architecture. With the introduction of the Ministry of Transport (MOT) vehicle test in the 1960s, demand accelerated still further. A diverse array of structures was utilised churches, cinemas, railway arches, fire stations, shops, factories all proved versatile enough to find second lives as garages. As the era of the combustion engine draws to a close, Butler's enchanting photographs of 226 Garages and Service Stations document the charm and personality of these survivors of the petrol age.
