  • Medea and Other Plays Medea Hecabe Electra

Penguin Books Ltd Medea and Other Plays Medea Hecabe Electra

Book SynopsisFour plays which exemplify his interest in flawed, characters who defy the expectations of Greek society The four tragedies collected in this volume all focus on a central character, once powerful, brought down by betrayal, jealousy, guilt and hatred. The first playwright to depict suffering without reference to the gods, Euripides made his characters speak in human terms and face the consequences of their actions. In Medea, a woman rejected by her lover takes hideous revenge by murdering the children they both love, and Hecabe depicts the former queen of Troy, driven mad by the prospect of her daughter's sacrifice to Achilles. Electra portrays a young woman planning to avenge the brutal death of her father at the hands of her mother, while in Heracles the hero seeks vengeance against the evil king who has caused bloodshed in his family. Book SynopsisHome is Where tells of the journeys - across continents, over time, and through the challenges of family love, loss and letting go - of Margaret Beetham, whose parents were Helen and Lesslie Newbigin, missionaries in India between the 1930s and the 1970sTrade Review‘Margaret Beetham has done a wonderful thing – making the ordinary extraordinary and the extraordinary ordinary, both at once. The word “autobiography” does not feel right: this is literature and theology and feminism (among other things). It recounts a way of growing up which is too nearly forgotten, or lost in either swagger or guilt. Above all she captures that elusive seductive distorted precision of childhood memory and weaves it into a story which is both honourable and beautiful.’ -- Sara Maitland * author of A Book of Silence *‘I found this book both enchanting and illuminating, providing as it does a rare insight into the lives of the children of those spreading the Gospel to foreign lands. Despite the years of separation from her parents in the cause of an English education, Margaret grows into a warm-hearted sister and mother that one can only admire.’ -- Sheila Cassidy, author of Audacity to Believe

Book Synopsis''I am beginning to realize that taking the self out of our essays is a form of repression. Taking the self out feels like obeying a gag order - pretending an objectivity where there is nothing objective about the experience of confronting and engaging with and swooning over literature''On the last day of December 2009 Kate Zambreno, then an unpublished writer, began a blog arising from her obsession with literary modernism. Widely shared on social media, Zambreno''s blog became an outlet for her highly informed and passionate rants and melancholy portraits of the fates of the modernist ''wives and mistresses,'' reclaiming the traditionally pathologized biographies of Vivienne Eliot, Jane Bowles, Jean Rhys, and Zelda Fitzgerald: writers and artists themselves who served as male writers'' muses only to end their lives silenced, erased, and institutionalized. Over the course of two years, her blog helped create a community of writers and devised a new feminist discourse

Book SynopsisNew York City, 1929. A sanatorium, a deadly disease, and a dire nurse shortage. So begins the remarkable true story of the Black nurses who helped cure tuberculosis, one of the world''s deadliest plagues, told alongside the often strange chronicle of the cure''s discovery.SHORTLISTED FOR THE PEN HESSELL-TILTMAN PRIZE 2024''A tour de force'' PEN''Gripping'' New York Times''Wonderfully told . . . an invaluable restoration of another of history''s racially biased omissions'' Diana Evans''Their triumphant story has until now been almost completely neglected'' The Bookseller''Informative, enthralling, and sometimes appalling, this is history at its best'' BooklistDuring those dark pre-antibiotic days, when tuberculosis killed 1 in 7 people, white nurses at Sea View, New York''s largest municipal hospital, began quitting. Desperate to avert a public health crisis, city officials summoned Black southern nurses, luring them with promises of good pay, a career, and an escape from the strictures of Jim Crow. But after arriving, they found themselves on an isolated hilltop in the remote borough of Staten Island, yet again confronting racism and consigned to a woefully understaffed facility, dubbed ''the pest house'' where ''no one left alive''.Spanning the Great Depression and moving through World War II and beyond, this story follows the intrepid young women, the ''Black Angels'', who, for twenty years, risked their lives working under dreadful conditions while caring for the city''s poorest - 1,800 souls languishing in wards, waiting to die or become ''guinea pigs'' for experimental (often deadly) drugs. Yet despite their major role in desegregating the NYC hospital system - and vital work in the race for the cure for tuberculosis and subsequently helping to find it at Sea View - these nurses were completely erased from history. The Black Angels recovers the voices of these extraordinary women and puts them at the centre of this riveting story celebrating their legacy and spirit of survival.

Ebury Publishing Braving the Wilderness: The quest for true

    10 in stock

Book SynopsisA timely and important new book that challenges everything we think we know about cultivating true belonging in our communities, organizations, and culture, from the #1 bestselling author of Rising Strong, Daring Greatly, and The Gifts of Imperfection.‘True belonging doesn't require us to change who we are. It requires us to be who we are.’ Social scientist Brené Brown, PhD, LMSW has sparked a global conversation about the experiences that bring meaning to our lives – experiences of courage, vulnerability, love, belonging, shame and empathy. In Braving the Wilderness, Brown redefines what it means to truly belong in an age of increased polarisation. With her trademark mix of research, storytelling and honesty, Brown will again change the cultural conversation while mapping out a clear path to true belonging.Brown argues that what we're experiencing today is a spiritual crisis of disconnection, and introduces four practices of true belonging that challenge everything we believe about ourselves and each other. She writes, ‘True belonging requires us to believe in and belong to ourselves so fully that we can find sacredness both in both being a part of something, and in standing alone when necessary. But in a culture that's rife with perfectionism and pleasing, and with the erosion of civility, it's easy to stay quiet, hide in our ideological bunkers, or fit in rather than show up as our true selves and brave the wilderness of uncertainty and criticism. But true belonging is not something we negotiate or accomplish with others; it's a daily practice that demands integrity and authenticity. It's a personal commitment that we carry in our hearts.’ Brown offers us the clarity and courage we need to find our way back to ourselves and to each other. And that path cuts right through the wilderness. Brown writes, ‘The wilderness is an untamed, unpredictable place of solitude and searching. It is a place as dangerous as it is breathtaking, a place as sought after as it is feared. But it turns out to be the place of true belonging, and it's the bravest and most sacred place you will ever stand.’Trade ReviewThanks to Brené Brown I learned how to be vulnerable… a life changer * Miranda Hart *Brené Brown is an important thought leader of our times … a deeply inspiring book * Red magazine *Stories, beautifully told, of learning to belong because you know, enjoy, admire, and forgive yourself. -- Angela Duckworth, author of Grit

Book SynopsisThe essential guide to the world of Aztec mythology, based on Nahuatl-language sources that challenge the colonial history passed down to us by the Spanish. How did the jaguar get his spots? What happened to the four suns that came before our own? Where was Aztlan, mythical homeland of the Aztecs? For decades, the popular image of the Mexica people better known today as the Aztecs has been defined by the Spaniards who conquered them. Their salacious stories of pet snakes, human sacrifice and towering skull racks have masked a complex world of religious belief. To reveal the rich mythic tapestry of the Aztecs, Camilla Townsend returns to the original tales, told at the fireside by generations of Indigenous Nahuatl-speakers. Through their voices we learn the contested histories of the Mexica and their neighbours in the Valley of Mexico the foundations of great cities, the making and breaking of political alliances, the meddling of sometimes bloodthirsty gods and understand mo

Book SynopsisThe most honest and unsparing grunge memoir ever committed to the page by one of the greatest alternative rock stars of the past thirty yearsTrade ReviewRaw, ravaged and personal - a stoned cold classic -- Ian RankinSing Backwards and Weep is powerfully written and brutally, frighteningly honest. First thought that came to my mind was, 'Mark Lanegan gives the term 'bad boy' a whole new meaning.' These are gritty, wild tales of hardcore drugs, sex, and grunge. But this is also the story of a soulful artist who refused the darkness when it tried to swallow him whole. And who found redemption through grace and the power of his unique and brilliant music. Finally, the song becomes truth. And the truth becomes song -- Lucinda WilliamsA mesmerising trip to the dark side that in places is so gloriously bleak it achieves a kind of Grand Guignol comedy. Written in blood, with true intensity, it becomes an instant classic of the genre -- Kevin BarryA dark tale of dysfunctional normality and diseased reality. At war with the world and himself, Mark Lanegan writes like he sings, from the pained heart of a damaged soul with brutal honesty -- Bobby GillespieOne of the rawest and most honest music autobiographies I've ever read -- Stuart BraithwaiteThe frontman of the Screaming Trees gives a bloody, brawling, dope-fueled tour of his personal battlefields By any reckoning, Lanegan should be long dead alongside beloved friends like Kurt Cobain of Nirvana, Kristen Pfaff of Hole, and Layne Stanley of Alice in Chains. By either miracle or stamina, the author is still alive to offer a blisteringly raw self-portrait of life not just as an excessively self-indulgent rock star, but also a victim of his own hubris . . . This isn't just a warts-and-all admission; it's a blackout- and overdose-rich confessional marked by guilt and shame. It's also not a redemption song, but like any other train wreck, it's impossible to look away. A stunning tally of the sacrifices that sex, drugs, and rock 'n' roll demand of its mortal instruments * Kirkus *Many rock memoirs come with a third act in which the artist achieves sobriety and disavows their former life. Not so Lanegan, who delivers grand guignol scenes of heroin-fuelled violence, degradation and self-abuse while recalling his Screaming Tree days, with little in the way of regrets. Rare in its rawness and bracing honesty. * The Guardian, 10 of the Best Music Biographies *The most brutally honest rock memoir imaginable -- Daily TelegraphNot for the faint-hearted -- 9/10, Classic RockAn astonishingly frank, heartbreaking and tremendously brave book -- Record CollectorDark yet borderline-hilarious cavalcade of horror and mayhem -- Big IssueThe book reads like a debauched Bukowski novel, as Lanegan drifts from sin to sin, cursing those who held him back from music, drugs, and hookups, and recounting grisly tales about his famous friends -- Rolling StoneThis is a frank, astonishing and often horrifying recollection from someone who has certainly lived a life, and who has now decided to share a part of it . . . far from your usual Rockstar Memoir -- Si Forster * Echoes and Dust *One of the most unflinching memoirs in the history of music writing . . . it is a survivor's tale, and a brilliantly written one at that * Kerrang *[Sing Backwards and Weep] makes for a harrowing epic, a thriller if I ever read one . . . the lyricist's flair he applies to its best passages elevates the book from the level of hachneyed retreads . . . he's able to dial himself up in moments of rage, sink us chin-deep into his sorrow at the loss of good friends . . . and crank the tension into a tightly wound ball when the dope-sickness sets in and the chase for a fix is on * Bookanista *A harrowing but often hilarious chronicle of addiction and regret . . . packed full of surprises . . . [Lanegan's] eye-popping memoir explores hell's many sub-basements, and lived to produce good writing -- Kitty Empire * Guardian *Rare in its rawness and candour, the book is a brutal chronicle of addiction -- Fiona Sturges * Guardian *[A] deeply sensitive book -- GuardianA brutally honest, harrowing yet utterly compulsive read * The Quietus *frank about his youthful search for "decadence, depravity, anything, everything" and refuses to flinch from the guilt he still carries around the death of his friend Kurt Cobain * NME *It's a depiction of addiction and self-loathing so bleak that your fingernails come away its pages caked in dirt. In it Lanegan lays his track-marked past bare, cycling endlessly between his roles as powerless victim, talented screw up and toxic enabler from page to stinking page * Clash *unflinchingly tells the musician's hardscrabble story from his early days in backwater Ellensburg, Washington as he drifts from a teen gambler and porn fiend to petty criminal * Spin *A chronicle of depravity and drugs, laced with dark humour and crackling with - well, not exactly joie de vivre, but certainly the will to live. The story of the rock star who descends into substance-abuse hell but survives to tell the tale has been told a thousand times, but Lanegan relates his experiences with irresistible swagger and honesty * Financial Times *A bejewelled document of excess and redemption * Mirror *The book is a triumph. * New Statesman *This is a narrative packed with surprises [...] but there is room in this heavy, heavy book for quite astonishing turns of kismet. * The Observer *A visceral, unforgettable memoir. * The New European *Sing Backwards and Weep is an unflinching trawl - or would be, were it not marginally leavened by straight-shooting yet eloquent language, gallows humour and his sweet, boyish excitement at the breifest of encounters with musical heroes such as Waylon Jennings and Devo's Mark Mothersbaugh * Scotland on Sunday *The usual offering is that dreaded soufflé of bullshit known as the rock memoir - the airy embellishment of glory days that inevitably collapses under the weight of its own conceit. But Lanegan's Sing Backwards and Weep is a rock memoir only insofar as its author happens to have sung rock n' roll in seminal bands while developing close friendships with some of the genre's most dearly departed * Vice *Rare in its rawness and candour, the book is a brutal chronicle of addiction [...] despite the tragedies, an arch humour characterises a lot of the writing * The Guardian *gripping memoir * Sunday Express *This is a narrative packed with surprises [...] but there is room in this heavy, heavy book for quite astonishing turns of kismet. * The Observer *A rock autobiography as raw as it gets. Come for the magnificent rant about Liam Gallagher, stay for the bleak and gripping account of addiction and loss * The i *Sing Backwards and Weep is a painstakingly unflinching account of a troubled life further troubled by the excesses of rock 'n' roll. It is among the very best memoirs I have read, by a musician or anyone else * The Australian *Sing Backwards and Weep is the only rock autobiography you need investigate. Like some nicotine-stained amalgam of Tom Waits and Kurt Cobain, Mark Lanegan gives another meaning to "warts and all" as he recounts his near obliteration during the Seattle grunge boom of the 1990s, of which he is one of the few survivors. • Natal Hypnotherapy The Labour Companion: For a Better Birth

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisTo get the maximum benefit from this CD, you should learn the techniques from the Natal Hypnotherapy birth preparation CD and the book during the last trimester of you pregnancy. This CD can then be used to reinforce the techniques during the birth. There are three hypnosis tracks which can be listened to at different stages of labour and these have been designed to reflect the emotional stages you are likely to go through. The reduce adrenaline track is particularly useful if you are disturbed during the later stages of labour.Trade ReviewA.C Wishes to be Anonymous When the voice started as well and it matched the soothing voice on the preparation CD, my body automatically responded by relaxing and I found I was breathing more deeply. My husband said apart from one moan, all he could hear was heavy breathing - he even wondered if it was a false alarm and that it wasn't proper labourA" The first track was very good when I started labouring at home. The contractions were manageable and the cd was an ideal extension of the preparation cds that I had listened to previously. The imagery, soothing tones of the voice and reassurances definitely kept me calm and positive. The two other tracks were used when I arrived at the hospital and the complications became evident and I needed to stay in the zone. I continuously went back to them as my contractions became stronger and stronger and my partner used a number of the techniques (eg 3,2,1 relax) to great effect.A" Zoe Tapper I had a very start & stop labour for days which is difficult as I found it hard to keep my spirits up & stay focused. However for the 2 days that labour started for me and fizzled out the labour companion CD helped me stay focused & calm & helped stave off the disappointment of not going into full labour. I was beginning to wonder if the baby would ever arrive. 10 days after my EDD my waters broke with no accompanying pain I slept with the aid of the CD and woke at 4am with 2 pains 10 minutes apart. I called the midwife who came to the house (bearing in mind she had been on 2 previous days with mo result!) and I had very manageable pains every 10 minutes or so until 9am when she examined me again to say I was 3cm and favourable. I was disappointed as I thought it would take hours longer but as it was my 3rd baby the midwife thought baby would arrive within the hour. We went up to the bathroom and set up the gas and air and tens machine and sure enough 45 minutes later out she popped! I put my speedy labours down to hypnotherapy and great midwife support, both of which make for a fear free labour.A" Bella Jordan The first track I listened to when contractions were still relatively mild, even though at the time I thought they were quite strong! The track really helped me re-focus on what I had tuned into during the original CD. The 2nd track was really helpful just to hear the voice and the reminders to relax etc... The music also really helped. Although I have to admit I found it VERY hard to actually block out the pain... I definitely did it every now and again but it was almost easier to ride the contraction out feeling the pain, although it definitely felt better when I managed to control it!! Bearing in mind that I was sleep deprived as my early contractions had been going for days before I headed into the birth centre. The 3rd track was very helpful. I had it on regularly to bring me down off the ceiling. I would highly recommend that people buy this CD if they're buying the birth preparation CD, because I feel as though if I didn't have this CD more of my hypnotherapy prep would have gone out of the window.A" G.B. wishes to remain annonymous The labour companion CD really helped me to calm down and 'centre myself' once I realised that this was definitely it! It reminded me to use the breathing techniques and visualisations I had learned from the birth preparation cd. The cd helped me calm down instantly and got me into the right frame of mind to deal with labour. I had been really nervous about the possibility of going into a hospital, and had chosen the local midwife led unit in order to try to avoid a hospital birth. I obviously knew that transfer would still be a possibility, and was glad to have the birth companion cd available. However, meconium in the waters meant that I had to be transferred to hospital. An ambulance arrived to collect me, and despite my husband having to travel separately, I remained calm and positive. During the transfer, I went through transition. I remember this being very painful and uncomfortable, but not worrying. In the ambulance I had some 'gas and air', the only pain relief I used throughout the whole labour and birth. I arrived at the hospital at 1:30am in stage 2 of labour. I was attached to a fetal monitor, but the pads kept slipping. This meant the machine was showing a varying heart rate, but still I was able to stay calm and positive, and knew that this was a fault with the machine, and that my baby was absolutely fine. During this stage I experienced no pain at all, and after nearly 2 and a half hours of pushing, baby F was born in full health, weighing 8lb 8oz, with an APGAR score of 9/10! I unfortunately sustained a 3rd degree tear, requiring surgery, but I hadn't felt this during the birth, and (despite my prior fear of hospitals and medicalisation) approached the surgery with the same calm positivity as I had the birth!A" I was surprised to find that I accepted the news calmly, and did not panic, as I had been afraid I would. I am sure that this is attributable to the natal hypnotherapy cd's I'd used, specifically track 1 of the companion cd that had helped me to recall the birth preparation techniques I'd learned. Laura Nickell The excitement phase track helped remind me of all my preparation and get me in a positive mindset. Serious stage helped me stay focused when became intense and the Adrenaline helped me relax when scared. The birth preparation helped me the most, and the labour companion tracks reminded me of relevant stages so could focus my thoughts and remind myself what I'd learnt. I've recommended the cd and book to all my pregnant friends, I'm a worrier and it helped me immensely throughout. Thank youA" Kirsty Clifford I used your labour companion CD when I birthed my third son. As it was a very quick birth - 1 hour 50 mins from first contraction to him being born, I'm afraid I only listened to track 3 on the CD - I went straight into active labour with the first contraction, no time for the excitement phase! And as I was in transition in the lift on the way to the labour ward I wasn't able to concentrate on the CD player enough to change the track from repeat. . OK, firstly I found it immensely helpful to have the same music in the background to your birth preparation CD. Even though I was in the car I found that as soon as I heard the music I relaxed - I noticed my shoulders drop immediately, without even listening to any words. When your voice started as well and it matched the soothing voice on the preparation CD, my body automatically responded by relaxing and I found I was breathing more deeply. I wasn't always able to listen to the individual words on the CD, depending on where I was in the contraction - I dealt with them by really focusing on my breathing so zoned out sometimes - but key phrases such as 3,2,1 relax stood out and really seemed to work, I noticed myself going from grasping the door for dear life to relaxing my grip and resting my hands in my lap. My husband said apart from one moan, all he could hear was heavy breathing - he even wondered if it was a false alarm and that it wasn't proper labour! I kept the CD player on throughout the journey to the hospital, getting out of the car into the wheelchair, going in the lift and then in the labour room I had it on throughout the birth. I still heard the midwife and my husband and was able to respond to both of them, but in the background I could always hear the music and your voice. It was incredibly helpful as it seemed to just let my body get on with things without my needing to think about it - which was exactly what I wanted. I think all I said to the midwife was 'I'm pushing' and that was about it until he was born! I did have G&A but I was expecting to need that, I got a bit distressed in the lift as I was in transition (which I knew to expect) and the wheelchair went over a bump getting into the lift which distracted me, so I asked for gas as I knew from previous births that it helps me concentrate on my breathing. I didn't actually need it much since I was pretty much pushing as soon as I got there, and could feel every stage of his head and body coming out. As my body had done so well on it's own, I also felt confident enough to ask for physiological third stage which I had previously been concerned about, having had 2 x pphs. However, my body knew what it was doing and it all went fine, with no pph either. Again, I repeated 3,2,1 relax in my head to deal with the contractions to push it out and it seemed to automatically relax me. I was a little bit unsure as to whether natal hypnotherapy would work on me or not, as listening to the preparation CD in the weeks leading up to the birth I never felt 'hypnotised' - I was always scratching my nose, fidgeting in the seat and generally being aware of my surroundings despite my best attempts to sit still. I did however find them incredibly relaxing and surprisingly emotional - the first few times you spoke about the golden light warming my baby I was in tears! Given my concerns, when the time came I was amazed at how well it all worked - I genuinely didn't feel scared (even though I began to realise I was only just going to make it to hospital) and both my husband and the midwife were really surprised and impressed with how I coped as well. I have recommended hypnotherapy to anyone who has asked and cannot thank you enough for helping me to enjoy my birth so muchTable of ContentsTrack 1 - Introduction 02:24 Track 2 - Excitement phase 22:31 Track 3 - Serious phase 17:02 Track 4 - Reduce adrenaline 06:05

Book SynopsisThe Slender-billed Curlew, Numenius tenuirostris, 'the slim beak of the new moon', is one of the world's rarest birds. It once bred in Siberia and wintered in the Mediterranean basin, passing through the wetlands and estuaries of Italy, Greece, the Balkans and Central Asia. Today the Slender-billed Curlew exists as a rumour, a ghost species surrounded by unconfirmed sightings and speculation. The only certainty is that it now stands on the brink of extinction. Birds are key environmental indicators. Their health or hardship has a message for us about the planet, and our future. What does the fate of the Slender-billed Curlew mean for us, and for the natural world? What happened to it, and why? In Orison for a Curlew Horatio Clare journeys through a fractured Europe in search of the Slender-billed Curlew, following the bird's migratory path on an odyssey that takes us into the lives of the men and women who have fought to save the landscapes to which the bird belongs. This is a story of beauty, triumph, and the struggles of conservation. It is a homage to a bird which may never be seen again.Trade Review"Busy and vigorous humanity is the subject to which Clare is best suited; he has a sharp ear for it, and thanks to Clare's generosity toward his subjects, the wealth of backstory and anecdote in his Orison practically hums with it." Book SynopsisPoly Styrene was a singer-songwriter, an artist, a free-thinker, a post-modern style pioneer and a lifelong spiritual seeker: a true punk icon. But this rebel queen with the cheeky grin was also a latter-day pop artist with a wickedly perceptive gift for satirising the world around her - her brightly coloured, playful aesthetic sharply at odds with the stark monochrome style and nihilism of punk. Here, for the first time, the vibrant jigsaw of Poly's inspiring and often moving story has been lovingly pieced together by her daughter, singer-songwriter Celeste Bell, and writer/artist Zoe Howe. From growing up mixed-race in Brixton in the 1960s, to being at the forefront of the emerging punk scene with X-Ray Spex in the 1970s, to finding faith with the Hare Krishna movement, to balancing single motherhood with a solo music career and often debilitating mental health issues, the book honestly and openly explores Poly's exceptional life, up until her untimely passing in 2011. Based on interviews with those who knew and loved Poly whether personally or through music, this oral history book includes testimonies from Vivienne Westwood, Don Letts, Glen Matlock, Jonathan Ross, Neneh Cherry, The Slits Tessa Pollitt, Thurston Moore, Jon Savage, and many others. Heavily illustrated throughout including personal photographs, flyers from the punk scene and hand-drawn artwork and lyrics for X-Ray Spex and beyond the book beautifully captures Poly Styrene's creative and personal legacy, reminding us that if anyone had the power to turn our worlds dayglo, it was her.Trade Review'The life and times of a true rebel, by those who knew her best... with a clear-eyed sense of honesty. She was a true artist and a genuine one-off, and Dayglo is the celebration she deserves.' Classic Rock, 8/10 'A portrait of the singer-songwriter, visual artist and spiritual traveller. A richly illustrated oral history of the woman and her singular work. A complex, inspirational and moving story.' Mojo 'Lovingly compiled' NME

Book SynopsisA new anthology of Chinese short-fiction by award winning author Ken Liu. Here are sixteen short stories from China's groundbreaking SFF writers, edited and translated by award-winning author Ken Liu. In Hugo award-winner Liu Cixin's 'Moonlight', a man is contacted by three future versions of himself, each trying to save their world from destruction. Hao Jingfang's 'The New Year Train' sees 1,500 passengers go missing on a train that vanishes into space. In the title story by Tang Fei, a young girl is shown how the stars can reveal the future. In addition, three essays explore the history and rise of Chinese SFF publishing, contemporary Chinese fandom, and how the growing interest in Chinese SFF has impacted writers who had long laboured in obscurity. By turns dazzling, melancholy and thought-provoking, Broken Stars celebrates the vibrancy and diversity of SFF voices emerging from China. 'Dreamlike and hypnotic, evocative and inspiring' THE BOOKBAG. 'Ken Liu is a genius' ELIZABETH BEAR. 'An instant classic... Poetry on every page' HUGH HOWEY. Trade ReviewA good mix of well-established authors and new voices... While the styles on show are disparate, one thread that links many stories is the way they engage intelligently with Chinese myths and history... Book Synopsis"Sergio Chejfec is an admirable writer." —Patti Smith“Could anyone possibly believe that writing doesn’t exist? It would be like denying the existence of rain.”The perfect green notebook forms the basis for Sergio Chejfec’s work, collecting writing, and allowing it to exist in a state of permanent possibility, or, as he says, “The written word is also capable of waiting for the next opportunity to appear and to continue to reveal itself by and for itself.” This same notebook is also the jumping off point for this essay, which considers the dimensions of the act of writing (legibility, annotation, facsimile, inscription, typewriter versus word processor versus pen) as a way of thinking, as a record of relative degrees of permanence, and as a performance. From Kafka through Borges, Nabokov, Levrero, Walser, the implications of how we write take on meaning as well worth considering as what we write. This is a love letter to the act of writing as practice, bearing down on all the ways it happens (cleaning typewriter keys, the inevitable drying out of the bottle of wite-out, the difference between Word Perfect and Word) to open up all the ways in which “when we express our thought, it changes.” Trade Review************Praise for Sergio Chejfec"Sergio Chejfec is an admirable writer." —Patti Smith“Chejfec's latest work should be treated as a significant event." —Publisher's Weekly"It is hard to think of another contemporary writer who, marrying true intellect with simple description of a space, simultaneously covers so little and so much ground.” —Times Literary Supplement"I'd locate My Two Worlds among the rarae aves of recent fiction, among those books still capable of blazing new paths on the perilous trajectory of the modern novel." —Enrique Vila-Matas"This first novel by New York-based Argentine native Chejfec to be translated into English is a slim, gracefully discursive work....[My Two Worlds] allows us to enter the thoughts of a restless intellectual whose streams of thought involve the reader in his quest to find meaning in everything he sees and does." —Kirkus Reviews"If genius can be defined by the measure of depth of an artist’s perception into human experience, then Chejfec is a genius." —Coffin Factory“Sergio Chejfec’s The Incompletes is a masterfully nested narrative where writing—its presence on the page, its course through time, its prismatic dispersion of meaning—is the true protagonist. Heather Cleary’s flawless translation adds yet another layer to this extraordinary palimpsest of a novel.” —Hernan Diaz"This was one of Sergio’s great gifts as a writer: his ability to take the small, the fragmentary, and to reveal the worlds contained within." —Heather Cleary, Lit Hub"A beautifully baffling book about the peripatetic wanderings of your own mind through the hotels, hallways, and postcards of the protagonists, or about the instability hiding in every apparently solid building, or maybe even how you don’t know an event is significant until some disconnected and celestial phenomenon illuminates it." —Josh Cook , Porter Square Books
