Navigation and seamanship Books
Johns Hopkins University Press Sailing School
Book SynopsisHands-on science in the Age of Exploration. Winner of the John Lyman Book Award in Naval and Maritime Science and Technology by the North American Society for Oceanic History and the Leo Gershoy Prize by the American Historical AssociationThroughout the Age of Exploration, European maritime communities bent on colonial and commercial expansion embraced the complex mechanics of celestial navigation. They developed schools, textbooks, and instruments to teach the new mathematical techniques to sailors. As these experts debated the value of theory and practice, memory and mathematics, they created hybrid models that would have a lasting impact on applied science. In Sailing School, a richly illustrated comparative study of this transformative period, Margaret E. Schotte charts more than two hundred years of navigational history as she investigates how mariners solved the challenges of navigating beyond sight of land. She begins by outlining the influential sixteenth-century Iberian modeTrade ReviewAs voyages stretched into open ocean, mathematical expertise in celestial navigation became essential. Hands-on instruction with instruments remained key, but as historian Margaret Schotte reveals in this deft, scholarly chronicle, the nautical manual soon came into its own.—Barbara Kiser, NatureSailing School deploys compelling printed images and manuscript notations to reconstruct the practice of learning, a particularly difficult feat for a phenomenon that takes place in an intangible mental realm. In fusing the history of learning and print with that of navigation, Schotte shows how deep transformations in public intellectual culture built on themselves.—Sarah Kinkel, Times Higher EducationSchotte, in combination with Johns Hopkins University Press, has produced a beautifully illustrated, perceptively argued, well-written monograph that enhances historical understandings of not just early modern navigation, but also of early modern technical education and the lived experience of the pre-industrial maritime world. Sailing School exemplifies the kind of original work that close archival research can yield and will be a definitive work on its subject for years to come.—Timothy S. Wolters, Canadian Journal of Netherlandic Studies[A] valuable academic study. Sailing School is well-written with copious documentation.—James C. Hamilton, Captain Cook SocietySailing School provides us with a technically researched history of navigational pedagogy with enough captivating prose to transport the reader into the decisions and methods of educators in classrooms from past centuries . . . Schotte has produced an exceptional history of education for a snapshot of time within a highly technical field.—Darrell J. Glaser, United States Naval Academy, EH.NetSailing School is and extremely informative look into the practice and transmission of navigational knowledge in Europe during the scientific revolution, and how text helped to codify and communicate that information to new practitioners.—Kendra Lawrence, East Carolina University, Nautical Research JournalSchotte's book is an important contribution to maritime history and absolutely should be on the shelf of all interested in the details of seafaring life in the age of sail, as well as those studying Europe's centuries of expansion and conquest. I strongly recommend this book accordingly.—Ian Yeates, The Northern MarinerIt is immediately clear that Schotte knows how to draw readers into sweeping historic events, enriching the story with detail and accuracy to inspire awe . . . From technical advancements to highly charged personal stories, Schotte's book is a fascinating read.—Megan Mueller, yFile - York University's NewsIt is the immediacy of its subject matter that makes Sailing School so richly fascinating . . . Multinational in its approach, it offers insights into what was distinctive about pedagogy and practice in England, Spain, France and the Netherlands, and analysis of the extent to which knowledge and expertise were shared and transferred – not least through the medium of print. What one 17th-century teacher called 'This Art of Traversing and Caravanning over Neptune's Vast Dominions' has found in Schotte a gifted, lucid and illuminating chronicler.—Mathew Lyons, Literary ReviewThe history of getting from A to B is usually told as the history of instruments . . . But Margaret Schotte, in her excellent Sailing School, argues convincingly that the history of how ships, people, and goods move across vast distances must also be, perhaps quite centrally, a history of the book. Sailing School is a history of how early modern navigators learned to become navigators, and it holds important lessons for early modern knowledge as a whole.—William Rankin, Yale University, Isis: A Journal of the History of Science SocietySailing School, with its comparative analysis of academic traditions and training practices across Europe, is a magnificent contribution in the fields of History, History of Education, Pedagogy, Sociology, and Science in general. Margaret Schotte shows that "navigators were not born but made", enriching with new data and interpretations the history of knowledge in the Early Modern period. With a rigorous investigation and a brilliant narrative, she brings the European nautical science of the 16th and 17th centuries directly into the Scientific Revolution.—Silvana Munzi, RUTTER Book ReviewSchotte's book is a very important and highly relevant book for all interested in the technologies of the seas in the early modern period.—Hakon With Andersen, Norwegian University of Science and Technology, Technology and CultureTable of ContentsAcknowledgmentsEditorial PracticesIntroductionPrologue. Fernhurst Books Limited Logbook for GPS Navigation: Compact, for Small
Book SynopsisMost yachts and motor boats now use GPS as their primary source of positional information when navigating. The page layout of this logbook has been designed for clear entry of GPS positions and waypoints. The left-hand spread is for passage planning and the right-hand spread is for plotting positions on passage. There is also space to include narrative and separate pages for pilotage, harbour, anchorage and other notes, plus a section to use as a visitors’ book and / or to record crew changes. Taylor & Francis Ltd Seamanship Techniques
Book SynopsisIdeal for Merchant Navy Officers from Cadet rank to Master Mariner, the fifth edition of this highly respected book is in full colour, and has been updated to include more information on topics as diverse as electronic navigation and AIS technology whilst still including essential information on subjects such as safety at sea, rescue operations, watchkeeping duties and pollution control. It covers international standards and works well on courses throughout the world.Seamanship Techniques is written for serving mariners and nautical students from cadet to master level, studying for professional marine qualifications under the International Maritime Organization as per STCW requirements. Used by training establishments around the world, this best seller is the only reference to both shipboard practice and ship operations that seafarers will need.Trade ReviewCaptain Robert Hone - Plymouth University School of Marine Science and EngineeringWhat are the strengths of the current edition?Very good comprehensive coverage of wide range of subjects.Excellent colour photographsEasy to understand diagrams – also in colour.Good notes in marginWith regards to the content of the book in a new edition, which topics need to be updated or added to? Does anything need to be removed? A good "Mix" of Seamanship topics – hard to identify a thread – the book could be reduced into two volumes...but would this help? Its good to have eclectic range.Does it need the Rule of the road section? –this covered in several other books.Mark Shiner (and team) - Head of Maritime Studies, Orkney CollegeWhat are the strengths of the current edition? As always this is an excellent reference work. Traditionally laid out and very easy to access. I have compared it with Witherby’s new book "21st Century Seamanship" and House is, in many respects, far better. The Wetherby book tries too hard, misjudges the depth needed in such a compendium work and leaves you thinking you have only had a taster. House goes that little bit deeper and seems to give confidence via its written style. You feel that you are getting paired down, solid seamanship with House’s book. With regards to the content of the book in a new edition, which topics need to be updated or added to? Does anything need to be removed? Add/expand:Dynamic Positioning.Alternatively fuelled vessels such as LNG,CNG and Hydrogen.Human Element Limitations and Management issues.Remove or annex:Aspects of seamanship which are no longer used or permitted.Table of ContentsPreface to the First Edition. Book SynopsisThe Nautical Magazine first appeared in 1832, and was published monthly well into the twenty-first century. It covers a wide range of subjects, including navigation, meteorology, technology and safety. An important resource for maritime historians, it also includes reports on military and scientific expeditions and on current affairs. The 1870 volume was the thirty-ninth and last to be edited by Rear-Admiral Becher, whose brief postscript highlights improvements in charts and the installation of lightning conductors as important achievements, and remarks that the magazine's 'efforts for the improvement of all that concerns the seaman's benefit' have been a labour of love. The volume devotes much space to the newly opened Suez Canal. Australia, Canada and the Mediterranean also feature, and there are ethnographic articles on the peoples of Polynesia and West Africa. The volume also contains an obituary of Charles Dickens and a lively article on the University Boat Race.Table of Contents1. January 1870; 2. February 1870; 3. March 1870; 4. April 1870; 5. WW Norton & Co Brilliant Beacons A History of the American
Book SynopsisIn a work rich in maritime lore and brimming with original historical detail, Eric Jay Dolin, the best-selling author of Leviathan, presents an epic history of American lighthouses, telling the story of America through the prism of its beloved coastal sentinels.Trade Review"A marvelously interesting and entertaining narrative…A skillful dramatist of such events, Dolin is as good a portraitist of characters who built and kept lighthouses…Dolin moves forward to chronicle the construction of numerous impressive towers in wildly windswept, picturesque settings. These classic lighthouses, featured in the book’s many illustrations, and the keepers’ tales attached to them exert an ineffably romantic attraction richly conveyed in Dolin’s admirable presentation." -- Booklist (starred review)"The author of other masterly works on key aspects of American history and growth (Fur, Fortune, and Empire: The Epic History of the Fur Trade in America, 2010, etc.), Dolin here presents a thoughtful, straightforward chronicle of the American lighthouse, from the earliest, completed in 1716 at Little Brewster, in Boston Harbor, as a harbinger of burgeoning Colonial maritime growth, to the death of the last civilian keeper—at the Coney Island Lighthouse—in 2003…A delightful journey with excellent sketches, renderings, and resources for museums and organizations." -- Kirkus Reviews (starred review)"Here we have a full-bodied and fabulous history of one of America's most scenic and formative icons, the coastal beacons that defined a young nation’s economic drive and determination to own the seas. Readers familiar with the irresistible narratives Dolin delivered in Leviathan or Fur, Fortune, and Empire can be confident that he has now done the same for the riveting history of America's lighthouses." -- Rinker Buck, author of Flight of Passage and The Oregon Trail"Eric Jay Dolin has crafted a master work of research and storytelling. Brilliant Beacons is a fascinating ride through the rich history of lighthouses as strategic prizes in war, sources of technological innovation, and inspiration for architectural ingenuity that combines grace and strength. This is a book for anyone who has gazed with awe upon the sea." -- Brian Murphy, author of 81 Days Below Zero"Eric Jay Dolin looks beyond the postcard romance of lighthouses to reveal a vibrant and vital history.
