Mysticism Books
Peeters Publishers Hadewijch. The Complete Letters: Middle Dutch
Book SynopsisHadewijch, a Flemish beguine, who lived and wrote somewhere in Brabant during the thirteenth century, has brought mystical literature as a whole to its highest point. Hadewijch’s teaching is most accessible in her Letters, as there it is cast in a mould that succeeds in touching the senses as well as the mind. In her text, oral and written culture combine to form an organic unity: when Hadewijch writes, she not only builds sentences with words but composes sounds as well. In these mystical texts, minne (“love”) is pivotal as regards both form and content -- a distinction which Hadewijch largely overrides. As regards form, minne serves as a catchword which occurs everywhere, again and again, drawing together different parts and sections. As regards content, minne is the key to the mystical experience evoked by Hadewijch and refers as much to the person who lives the mystical union (along with the content of this feeling), as to the way in which this union makes itself felt. This edition of Hadewijch’s Letters includes the text of the 31 letters. The English text is not intended to be a word-for-word translation from the Middle Dutch, though it tries to keep closely to the original. Hadewijch’s own words, phrases and turns of phrase are transposed into the English text, especially when these are repeated and do not become a stumbling block for the present-day reader. There is a commentary to each Letter. However, the purpose in each case is not to accumulate the erudition of specialists or to comment on different interpretations. The aim is to encourage a slow and loving reading of the text itself, while trying to avoid any ready-made summary of what Hadewijch “has to say”. This edition also offers a new, sound-based lay-out of the text which is intended to assist an appreciation of the creativity of this gifted writer whose words and phrasing literally make music.

Peeters Publishers Seeing through the Eyes of Faith: New Approaches
Book SynopsisIn the course of the past years an interest in the mystagogy of the Church Fathers developed at various Dutch universities. Interest in the mystagogy of the Church Fathers increased because it was recognised that its study did justice both to the intention of the Church Fathers themselves and to the increasing demand for spirituality. It was not their primary intention to put forward a rational reflection on the depositum fidei as such or to pass on knowledge of it as a goal in itself. Their goal was rather to initiate a process aimed not so much at intellectual formation as at an existential transformation by means of rituals, catechesis and the explanation of stories and images from biblical traditions. In this book the main focus was on the mystagogy of the Church Fathers. The assumption was that philological, historical and theological methods complement each other in the approach to the Church Fathers as mystagogues. Consequently the manner in which they attempt to shape their introduction into the mystery of Christ was regarded from an interdisciplinary point of view. The contributions to this book form a first sketch of the research area of the mystagogy of the Church Fathers, as it is taking shape at present.

Peeters Publishers Meister Eckhart on the Principle: An Analysis of
Book Synopsis"What is this 'principle' (principium) in which God is said to have created heaven and earth?" This is the first question Eckhart poses at the very beginning of his Commentary on Genesis. In the course of this book a space is opened up in order to speak about the relationship between God and creation in a 'principial' way. Tracing the concept as it is used throughout his Latin (and, on occasion, German) works, the panoply and resonance of its use establish the necessary place of principium within the vocabulary of Eckhart's metaphysics of creation and generation. Ranging from the nature of being to the question of what constitutes human personhood, the 'principle' serves to identify Eckhart's teaching on the mutual compenetration between God and man. This book has been awarded the FIIT Manfred Lautenschlaeger Prize for Theological Promise by the University of Heidelberg.

Peeters Publishers Mysticism and Gender - Mística y género - Mystik
Book Synopsis2015 marks the five-hundredth anniversary of the Spanish mystic St. Teresa of Avila. This volume of the Journal of ESWTR is therefore dedicated to the issue of mysticism and gender. The mystical experience is a radical confrontation with oneself, where one recognizes one’s boundaries and is at the same time called to transgress them; it is a mystical transformation of the self that then will be able to transform unjust structures. Can mysticism today still unfold these capacities of transformation of self and societies, given the problems we are faced with? Using gender as a category of analysis, and adopting a gender-sensitive stand, the articles in this volume explore questions such as: How do issues of gender shape the relationship between mysticism and power? How have women mystics contributed to the field of mysticism? How can mysticism unfold a transformative power, both for individuals and societies? In short, what do we mean by mysticism today?

Peeters Publishers Performing Bodies: Time and Space in Meister
Book SynopsisWhat is time, what is space and how do they relate to each other? Even to pose these questions is to presume their existence, says Meister Eckhart in his Commentary on Exodus, from where he then develops his own view on the subject. Although far from having become mainstream, his definition of time as presentiality and space as non-categorical creativity had an enormous influence throughout history, particularly in the arts. In this thematic volume the contributors explore the concepts of time and space in Eckhart's thought, situating these historically, philosophically, theologically, and culturally, whilst focusing on their interpretation in art works, particularly by the American-Korean performance and video artist Taery Kim (b. 1988) who refers explicitely to Eckhart. Kim advances the questions 'what is time?' and 'what is space?' as embodied questions in her performances and video installations, thus exploring Eckhart and inquiring into the ways we can think about our relationships, as embodied subjects, to the vagrancies and bindings of time and space now. Drawing together artists, art historians, theologians, and philosophers, as well as building on existing scholarship, this volume provides the first lengthy discussion of spatio-temporality in Eckhart's writings, highlighting Eckhart's relationship to performance art, and the works of Kim.

Peeters Publishers Hadewijch. Brieven: Middelnederlandse tekst

Jan van Baarle Tree of Life -- Laminated Folded A4
Book SynopsisThe tree of life is an important element of the Jewish mystical tradition of the Kabbala. This chart gives a clear representation of the tree with its 10 sefirah and 32 paths and presents the different readings associated to this universal structure. The tree of life can indeed be an intelligent representation of many fields: from the cosmos to the body, from the Hebrew alphabet to the tarot, the angels, the worlds of evil, human development... Although this double chart can only be an introduction to this very complex subject, it is extremely rich and will remain a practical guide for further study.

Amsterdam University Press Christian Divination in Late Antiquity
Book SynopsisIn Late Antiquity, people commonly sought to acquire hidden knowledge about the past, the present, and the future, using a variety of methods. While Christians acknowledged that these methods could work effectively, in theory they were not allowed to make use of them. In practice, they behaved in diverse ways. Some probably renounced any hope of learning about the future. Others resorted to old practices regardless of the consequences. A third option was to construct divinatory methods that were effective yet religiously tolerable. This book is devoted to the study of such practices and their practitioners, and provides answers to essential questions concerning Christian divination. How did it develop? How closely were Christian methods related to older, traditional practices? Who used them and in which situations? Who offered oracular services? And how were they perceived by clerics, intellectuals, and common people?Trade Review"I recommend this book not just to scholars of late antique religion, but more widely to students and researchers of medieval Christianity and medieval prognostication. [...] For students of the middle ages the book is a welcome reminder that many of the medieval practices that used to be and sometimes still are discussed as "pagan survivals" were in fact already a part of Christian culture in late antiquity and were the result of active elaboration of Christian ideas to answer the kinds of needs ancient divination had covered."- Jesse Keskiaho, The Medieval Review, 22.01.16 (2021) "Robert Wisniewski has written a beautiful and very interesting book about Christian divination in Late Antiquity (4th-6th century)."- Mark Beumer, Kleio-Historia, 13 (2021) "The volume is a well-organized and detailed treatment of Christian divination in the fourth through the eighth centuries. The evidence is fascinating and compelling. Wisniewski balances examination of the widespread practices themselves with how Christian officials sometimes condemned them." - Jennifer Eyl, Journal of Early Christian Studies, Vol. 29, No. 3 “[...] the book is a wonderful resource for the Christian divinatory practices that clerical authors, if not explicitly recommended, 'neither were...so eager to condemn' (15).” - Yuliya Minets, Church History, Vol. 91, Iss. 1Table of ContentsINTRODUCTION The current state of research The evidence and its intricacies Objectives and plan of the book CHAPTER 1 - ATTITUDES TO DIVINATION Pagan divination Attitudes to non-pagan divination Legal background CHAPTER 2 - PROPHETS The twilight of prophecy in early Christianity A resurgence of prophecy Consultation with prophets Questions and questioners Self-perception of the prophets CHAPTER 3 - TAKE AND READ: READING THE FUTURE FROM THE BIBLE First words heard First words read Examination of biblical prophecies CHAPTER 4 - BOOKS AND BONES Sortes sanctorum Sortes Monacenses The Gospel of the Lots of Mary Sortes Sangallenses Codices with hermeneiai Other divinatory books Experts and clients CHAPTER 5 - DIVINATORY LOTS Oracular tickets Origins Inquirers, attitudes and popularity CHAPTER 6 - INTERROGATING DEMONIACS Saints and energumens A Gallic female seer and spiritus pythonis Pythones, engastrimythoi, ventriloqui, arrepticii Consultations in Constantinople and Egypt CHAPTER 7 - INCUBATION Early developments 'Pagan' and Christian Incubation Incubation sanctuaries Incubation in practice Popularity, resistance and discussions CONCLUSIONS BIBLIOGRAPHY Abbreviations Primary sources Secondary sources INDEX
