Sterling Publishers Pvt.Ltd Sufism and Modern Science
Book SynopsisSufism and Modern Science sheds light on the relationship between science and Sufism in Islamic history and philosophy. Al-Ghazali, Mevlana Rumi, Hasan al-Basri, Akshemseddin and Ahmed Süreyya Emin Bey are some of the names in the long list of Sufis who contributed to the field of science and philosophy. From the process of converting one element into another to the idea of overcoming time and space, Sufis have silently worked on and contributed to several scientific theories and theorems. Although this was not their main duty, they were pioneers in the positive sciences. Some Sufis used symbolic expressions which could be related to the terms developed by scientists only centuries later. From this, it is possible to sense the depth of the scientific foresight of the Sufis who also helped untangle the obstructed horizons of positive sciences. This book enlightens the readers of the lost history of science which was immensely enriched by the Sufis in different periods of time.

Brill Sufism in Central Asia: New Perspectives on Sufi
Book SynopsisSufism in Central Asia: New Perspectives on Sufi Traditions, 15th-21st Centuries brings together ten original studies on historical aspects of Sufism in this region. A central question, of ongoing significance, underlies each contribution: what is the relationship between Sufism as it was manifested in this region prior to the Russian conquest and the Soviet era, on the one hand, and the features of Islamic religious life in the region during the Tsarist, Soviet, and post-Soviet eras on the other? The authors address multiple aspects of Central Asian religious life rooted in Sufism, examining interpretative strategies, realignments in Sufi communities and sources from the Russian to the post-Soviet period, and social, political and economic perspectives on Sufi communities. Contributors include: Shahzad Bashir, Devin DeWeese, Allen Frank, Jo-Ann Gross, Kawahara Yayoi, Robert McChesney, Ashirbek Muminov, Maria Subtelny, Eren Tasar, and Waleed Ziad.Trade Review"The volume is systematic and cross-referential, and therefore fully deserves its place in Brill’s ‘Handbook of Oriental Studies’ series. Each chapter offers extensive bibliographies that also include the newest titles on regions not directly covered here, as for instance Eastern Turkestan (Xinjiang). The volume’s methodological agenda – prioritizing source studies across conventional borders for accentuating the importance of Sufi sources for social history – easily links up with studies on Sufism elsewhere in the world." - Michael Kemper, University of Amsterdam, in: Islam and Christian–Muslim Relations 30/2 (2019)Table of ContentsAcknowledgments Figures and Maps Contributors Note on Transcription and Style Maps Introduction Devin DeWeese and Jo-Ann Gross 1 Re-Envisioning the History of Sufi Communities in Central Asia: Continuity and Adaptation in Sources and Social Frameworks, 16th–20th Centuries Devin DeWeese 2 Naqshband’s Lives: Sufi Hagiography between Manuscripts and Genre Devin DeWeese 3 The Works of Ḥusayn Vāʿiẓ Kāshifī as a Source for the Study of Sufism in Late 15th- and Early 16th-Century Central Asia Maria E. Brill Visualizing Sufism: Studies on Graphic Representations in Sufi Literature (13th to 16th Century)
Book SynopsisVisualizing Sufism approaches the question of the presence of graphic materials in Islamic mystical literature from a broad and comprehensive perspective. To this goal, an international group of specialists in the field worked on largely manuscript and unpublished sources with the aim of analyzing the use of visual elements in the works of some key figures of Islamic mysticism—Ibn al-ʿArabī, Aḥmad al-Būnī, Saʿd al-Dīn Ḥamūyeh, al-Shaʿrānī—, and in intellectual networks—Ḥurūfiyya and Bektashiyya, Shīrīn Maghribī and his connections. The result is the most extensive collection of specimens of Sufi graphic materials ever brought together and discussed in a single volume. By virtue of the object of study investigated in the chapters of this book, in addition to the history of Sufism, questions are raised that touch upon numerous areas in the field of Islamic Studies, including intellectual history, codicology, and art history. Peeters Publishers Light Shining Through Veil: On Saint Clare's
Book SynopsisThe spirituality of Saint Clare of Assisi, the soul mate of Saint Francis, is the object of this book. Her spirituality was inspired by Francis' and she owes much to him, like he to her. This book is meant to be a contribution to the study of Clare and her thoughts. In her four letters, written to Saint Agnes of Prague, Clare expresses herself more openly about her deepest motivations than in any other writing. They concentrate on the heart of her choice of life and as such they reproduce the most beautiful gift which God gave her. Clare's sprituality as it comes to the fore in these leters, can only then be fully understood when we take into account their creative structure. The specific aim of this books is to do justice to her texts in a method which, to our knowledge, was never applied before. It consists in an elaborated analysis of the fine, concentric structure of the letters to Agnes, combined with an ongoing commentary in which historical data are also given attention.

Peeters Publishers The Riddle of Christian Mystical Experience: The
Book SynopsisA distinctive feature of mystical experience is that it is "imageless". Mystics of various traditions witness indeed to their going beyond all intermediaries so as to enjoy immediate union. Understandably, the idea of imageless immediacy is attractive, and it is especially in vogue with those who hope to discover that different (religious) spiritualities converge if only the particularity of, say, the Christian way would be left behind. However, a crucial question arises here. If mystical union consists in simply transcending what is part and parcel of the human condition, where is its relevance? Is the mystic as such in a position to be his or her human self - thinking and loving, enjoying and suffering? Can he or she be active in the world of humankind? Obviously, it is especially in the Christian tradition that this matter comes to the fore as a radical difficulty. For here there is the divine Image and Mediator, so much so that the Humanity of Jesus ought to be integral to a person's union with God. Perhaps the Christian mystic is such an extraordinary figure that the Humanity and all other images and intermediaries are, for him or her, at best a stepping-stone that is bound to disappear? A"The Riddle of Christian Mystical ExperienceA" aims to clarify this issue by analyzing the writings of such visionaries as Julian of Norwich, Teresa of Avila and Maria Petyt; of the ecstasy-minded masters Richard of Saint Victor, Bernard of Clairvaux and Bonaventure (describing Francis of Assisi's experience); of the cream of the Flemish mystics, namely Hadewijch and Jan van Ruusbroec. Nevertheless, the preference for the mystical text does not prevent the A"RiddleA" from drawing on the insights of modern philosophers such as Jean-Paul Sartre and Jean-Luc Marion when treating of images and idols, or Michael Polanyi and Ludwig Wittgenstein when reflecting on intermediaries. The main result of this procedure may come as a surprise. Far from turning into a detached creature who forgets about the Humanity and the human, the full-fledged mystic is, as a Flemish mystic puts it, "wholly in God, where he rests in enjoyment, and wholly in himself, where he loves with works". Experiencing union "with intermediary and without intermediary", the true Christian mystic is "unimaged" as well as "imaged upon the humanity of our Lord through heartfelt affection".

Peeters Publishers A Strange Tongue: Tradition, Language and the
Book SynopsisThis book is the product of both historical and personal interest in the grounds of religious conviction. It deals with the practice and development of the tradition of 'discernment of spirits' in the late fourteenth-century England and sixteenth-century Spain as reflected in the classical texts of the mystics of the periods; Julian of Norwich, the Cloud Author and Walter Hilton in England and Ignatius of Loyola and John of the Cross in Spain. The tradition of 'discernment' came into being at the very beginning of the Church's history and has been appropriated, adapted and developed throughout its history. The book explores how the tradition is expanded and maintains continuity with its origins and suggests that it reaches some apogee in sixteenth-century Spain for Christian lives of apostolic mission and contemplation. It illustrates how the cultural circumstances of the times moulded the manner in which the experiences of the mystics were perceived. 'Discernment of Spirits' is about how Christians reach some conviction that the stirrings within consciousness which seem to originate so strangely, and yet beckon so persistently, are 'real' in the sense of authentically divine. They are stirrings which call for a response in the lives of mystics. Rowan Williams at the beginning of his influential book, The Wound of Knowledge, refers to 'the intractable strangeness of the ground of belief that must constantly be allowed to challenge the fixed assumptions of religiosity; it is a given whose question to each age is fundamentally one and the same'. This book illustrates how the question is addressed in the texts of the mystics. In our own time the strange stirrings which intimate the question tend to be drowned by a multiplicity of competing voices. The suggestion is made that when we listen to the voices of the past we may be encouraged to wonder about the question posed by the stirrings within our own consciousness, hitherto unheard or dismissed as simply 'strange'.

Peeters Publishers A Thirteenth-century Textbook of Mystical
Book SynopsisThe luminaries of late thirteenth-century Europe took great interest in the mysterious fifth-century author known as Dionysius the Areopagite. They typically read Dionysius not in the original Greek, but in a Latin edition prepared sometime in the middle of the thirteenth century. This edition, which appeared first in Paris and later circulated all over Western Europe, was no mere translation. In addition to the famous translation made by Eriugena in the ninth century, it contained translations of scholia on the Dionysian texts made by Anastasius the Librarian, alternative readings provided by Anastasius and other Latin readers, as well as excerpts from Eriugena's own theological masterwork, the A"PeriphyseonA". University scholars such as Albert the Great and Thomas Aquinas thus learned Dionysian mystical theology not only from his text, but from the seven-hundred year interpretive tradition that literally surrounded it on the page.

Book SynopsisAlbert Deblaere, S.J. (1916-1994) was an erudite scholar with an original intellectual and spiritual profile. After having been for a short time a member of the Ruusbroec Society (Antwerp), he taught for many years at the Jesuit Theologicum in Heverlee (Louvain) and at the Gregorian University (Rome). He has had a remarkable impact on his disciples and on the scientific research of mystical literature. This volume offers a selection of his articles, in various languages, dealing with the history of mystical literature and the methodology of the study of those texts, with the specific mystical terminology and some major spiritual writers, such as e.g. John of Ruusbroec, Gerlach Peters, Thomas a Kempis and Maria Petyt. The second part of this volume consists of contributions in memory of Albert Deblaere by a number of scholars who have been inspired by him: Joseph Alaerts, Herwig Arts, Johan Bonny, Alvaro Cacciotti, Rob Faesen, Paul van Geest, Max Huot de Longchamp, Paul Mommaers and Paul Verdeyen.

Peeters Publishers Dit Mateloze Verlangen: Pareltjes Van Nederlandse
Peeters Publishers Mystical Discourse in Wordsworth and Whitman: A
Book SynopsisIn "Mystical Discourse" D.J. Moores builds on the work of current transatlantic scholarship in a lucid analysis of the connections between William Wordsworth and Walt Whitman. As he demonstrates, the "transatlantic bridge" between both poets lies in their privileging of a type of mystical language he calls "cosmic" rhetoric, which served the function of ideological resistance, as it enabled them to rebel against Enlightenment modes of thinking and being. In a thorough engagement with the work of Wordsworth and Whitman, Moores shows that the cosmic rhetoric of both writers involves a subversive reorientation towards self and society, nature and God, and knowledge and religion, as well as a radical revisioning of language and poetics.

Peeters Publishers Embraced by the Father and the Son in the Unity
Book SynopsisReaders, particularly those in the English-speaking world, will be delighted to receive this new study of the thought of the fourteenth century mystic of the Low Countries, Jan van Ruusbroec, one of the titans of the mystical life. For Ruusbroec, renowned master of mystical literature, the mystery of the Trinity constitutes the foundation of the mystical life. In his tractates, trinitarian mysticism meets trinitarian theology to a striking degree. In this most welcome study, Lieve Uyttenhove presents a comprehensive systematic theological exploration of Ruusbroec's trinitarian mysticism and offers new insights into Ruusbroec's thought, arguing that Ruusbroec saw no essential difference between God's inner-trinitarian life of love and God's life of love in relation to humanity and that the source of God's flowing-out (inden uutvloeiene) and drawing-back (inden weder invloeyene) is the unity of the Holy Spirit. In her careful textual study, Uyttenhove also explores the much discussed issue of the relationship of Ruusbroec's thought to that of Plotinus, Augustine, Pseudo-Dionysius, Hadewijch, William of Saint Thierry, Richard of Saint Victor, Thomas Aquinas, Bonaventure, and Meister Eckhart. Here is also a rich and valuable resource for all those interested in reconnecting theology and mysticism.
