NUS Press Playing for Malaya: A Euroasian Family and the

Book SynopsisReggie, according to his niece Wendy, 'only told what Reggie wanted you to know.' Reggie was my father. He had honed the technique of talking with apparent openness and using that talk as a decoy duck: while you were listening to it quack around the pond, you weren't noticing all the others hiding in the reeds. What follows includes tales that Reggie told repeatedly but, on the whole, it's about what Reggie didn't tell me. So begins a stunning personal account of a Eurasian family living in Malaya. Reggie was the author's father, and one of the many gaps in his account of his family was that his mother was Eurasian. When Rebecca Kenneison discovered this omission after his death, she set out to learn more about her extended family on the other side of the world.Playing for Malaya has a much larger purpose. Set in the 1930s and 1940s, it recounts the experiences of an extended Eurasian family during the invasion and occupation of Malaya by the Japanese. Colonial society considered Eurasians insufficiently European to be treated as British, but during the Pacific War they seemed all too European to the Japanese, who subjected the Eurasian community to discrimination and worse. Because many Eurasians, including members of the Kenneison family, supported the Allied cause, their wartime experiences are an extraordinary account of tragedy, heroism and endurance, presented here with great eloquence and clarity.

Book SynopsisThe link between Hitler''s Third Reich and European royalty has gone largely unexplored due to the secrecy surrounding royal families. Now, in Royals and the Reich, Jonathan Petropoulos uses unprecedented access to royal archives to tell the fascinating story of Queen Victoria''s great-grandsons, the Princes of Hesse, and the important role they played in the Nazi regime. Petropolous tells the fascinating tale of how, lured by prominent positions in the Nazi regime and highly susceptible to nationalist appeals, the princes became enthusiastic supporters of Hitler and helped make the Nazis socially acceptable to wealthy, high-society patrons. Permitted access to Hessen family private papers and the Royal Archives at Windsor Castle, Petropoulos follows the story of the House of Hesse through to its tragic denouement - the princes'' betrayal and persecution by an increasingly paranoid Hitler, followed by prosecution after the war.Trade ReviewMeticulously researched, 'Royals and the Reich' is a densly written but completely fascinating account of a family and its fortunes. * Peter Burton, Beige, Vol. 2, Issue 4 *Jonathan Petropoulous's 'Royals and the Reich: The Princes von Hessen in Nazi Germany' is to be welcomed. * Peter Burton, Beige, Vol.2, Issue 4 *Table of ContentsIntroduction ; 1. Book SynopsisIn February 1933, Adolf Hitler had only a tenuous grasp on power. Chancellor of Germany for merely four weeks, he led a fragile coalition government. The Nazis had lost seats in the Reichstag in the recent election, and claimed only three of thirteen cabinet posts. Then on February 27th, arson sent the Reichstag, the home and symbol of German democracy, up in flames. Immediately blaming the Communists, Hitler''s new government approved a decree that tore the heart out of the democratic constitution of the Weimar Republic and cancelled the rule of law. Five thousand people were immediately arrested. The Reichstag fire marked the true beginning of the Third Reich, which ruled for 12 more years. The controversy surrounding the fire''s origins has endured for 80.In Burning the Reichstag, Benjamin Hett offers a gripping account of Hitler''s rise to dictatorship-one that challenges orthodoxy and recovers the true significance of the part the fire played. At the scene the police arrested 23-yTrade ReviewIt is an impressive piece of work that presents fresh evidence ... • Oxford University Press Germany and the Second World War Volume IXII

Book SynopsisThe Second World War affected the lives and shaped the experience of millions of individuals in Germany - soldiers at the front, women, children, and the elderly sheltering in cellars, slave labourers toiling in factories, and concentration-camp prisoners and POWs clearing rubble in the Reich''s devastated cities.Taking a ''history from below'' approach, the volume examines how the minds and behaviour of individuals were moulded by the Party as the Reich took the road to Total War. The ever-increasing numbers of German workers conscripted into the Wehrmacht were replaced with forced foreign workers, slave labourers, and concentration camp prisoners. The interaction in everyday life between German civilian society and these coerced groups is explored, as is that society''s relationship to the Holocaust. From early 1943, the war on the home front was increasingly dominated by attack from the air. The role of the Party, administration, police, and courts in providing for the vast numbers oTrade ReviewThis book maintains the extremely high standards set by previous volumes in the series. Each essay provides both an excellent summing up of the literature (at least until 2005) and some fresh insights based on archival research ... [it] remains an essential starting point for German society during the war. * Jeff Rutherford, German History *this book is worth having and using. * Paul Bookbinder, European History Quarterly *Review from previous edition REVIEW OF OTHER VOLUMES IN SERIESA meticulous, scholarly perspective on the conflict from Germany's side * Max Hastings, Evening Standard *Brilliant analysis of how Germany fought its war * Max Hastings, Evening Standard *authoritative and lavishly produced set of studies, co-authored in the present case by a half-dozen of the Federal Republic's leading military historians...Klink's over two-hundred-page summary of the actual conduct of operations...is a model of its kind. The translation reads flawlessly.' * International History Review *monumental study of Germany and the Second World War * Victor Rothwell, History *It is a monumental work that provides extensive, copiously annotated, and cartographically illustrated coverage of the background, planning, and execution of the German attack and the Soviet response...a volume that almost certainly is the closest thing there ever will be to a definitively authoritative history of the opening phase of the German campaign that represented a turning point in the history of the war and of the world in the twentieth century. * World War Two Studies Association *An indispensable new dimension is added to our understanding of the conflict...describes events in ruthless detail from the view point of the Third Reich * The Evening Standard *I assure you all that it is worth every penny! This one volume seems to be destined to become THE definitive study on the German planning and invasion of the Societ Union for decades to come. The wealth of detail and information included in this work is simply staggering...I wholeheartedly recommend this book.' * Axis Europa *Should leave no doubt that the world's most distinguished company of military historians is to be found in the Militärgeschichtliches Forschungsamt. * American Historical Review *the latest volume of Germany and the Second World War slices open the German war effort and examines the inner workings of war administration, economy, and manpower resources...every page is packed with a dense compilation of information and analysis...a rigorous, academic analysis packed with information impossible to find elsewhere in English, and it also forms an integral part of an exceedingly important series of books about Germany's role in the world conflict. We can't recommend it to the casual reader, but it certainly belongs on the shelf of every serious historian of World War II as part of the ultimate autopsy of the German war effort. * Stone & Stone *By bringing out an English translation, OUP have put all scholars of the war in their debt. If any volume can lay claim to being definitive, this is surely it. The authors have read almost unbelievably widely in the primary and secondary sources...it will endure...an indispensable guide to the latest research on most key aspects of the war...the range and intellectual energy...will make it an invaluable work of reference for undergraduate and researchers...as valuable a commemoration of the war as any. * Mark Mazower, History Today *[Part of] a succession of mighty volumes ... The portrait of German wartime society presented by this book is somber, meticulously documented, cool, reasoned. * The New York Review of Books *Table of ContentsPART ONE: PERCEPTIONS AND ASSIGNED MEANINGS; PART TWO: ALIENS IN WAR-TIME EVERYDAY LIFE

  • Taylor & Francis Ltd The Anarchy of Nazi Memorabilia

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisOut of the numerous books and articles on the Third Reich, few address its material culture, and fewer still discuss the phenomenon of Nazi memorabilia. This is all the more surprising given that Nazi symbols, so central to sustaining Hitler's movement, continue to live long after the collapse of his 12-year Reich. Neither did Nazi ideology die; far-right populists would like to see the swastika flown over the White House or Buckingham Palace. Against a backdrop of right-wing extremism, military re-enactors think nothing of dressing up in Waffen-SS uniforms and romanticising the Third Reich in the name of living history. Auctioneers are prepared to hammer down Nazi artefacts to the highest bidder, but who is buying them, and why do they do so? Should collectors be allowed to decorate their homes with Nazi flags? The Anarchy of Nazi Memorabilia begins by examining the creation and context of Nazi artefacts and symbols during the volatile Weimar Republic to their widTrade Review"This is a corner of the technology of the Third Reich that can still be appropriated, when the larger and more complex technology has for the most part disappeared into museums. Hughes has produced an intelligent and detailed account of a materiality that refuses to become merely a part of the past." - Richard Overy, University of Exeter, Technology and Culture"The book will be of particular interest to scholars following contemporary trends in Nazi-era studies such as the archaeology of everyday sites of genocide, the looting of not only fine arts but an array of objects that constituted the violent transfer of wealth during the war, and the exploration of material culture more broadly. It also complements scholars interested in exploring areas of collecting that are ethically problematic, such as memorabilia from the Confederacy in the American South." - Paul Jaskot, Duke University, Journal of Contemporary Archaeology"Michael Hughes has written a probing, ambitious book that makes plain the quandaries of Nazi memorabilia collections." - Christopher J. McNulty, Northeastern University Boston, Journal of Military History"The Anarchy of Nazi Memorabilia is a well-written and thoroughly researched study offering valuable connections between the present and the past that will appeal to all historians, social scientists, those interested in collecting and in material culture, and likely many more." - Melissa Etzler, Butler University, German Studies Review"An ambitious, engaging, and important work on the origins, histories, and purposes of Nazi medals and badges and their societal contexts during and after World War II." - Robert M. Ehrenreich, United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, Winterthur Portfolio"The material culture of the Third Reich is the subject of The Anarchy of Nazi Memorabilia, a thought-provoking new study by Michael Hughes. For all the scholarly works examining various forms of Nazi propaganda, such as films, art, architecture, radio, and posters, this is the first book of its type, and Hughes deserves praise for his pioneering effort. Without question, this is an expansive subject that warrants further scholarship" - Jeffrey Luppes, Indiana University South Bend, German Politics and SocietyTable of Contents1 Introduction / 2 From Weimar to the Third Reich / 3 The Materiality of the People’s Community / 4 Pre-war Awards: More Than Just Eagles and Swastikas / 5 Medals for Babies: The ‘Honour Cross of the German Mother’ (Ehrenkreuz der Deutschen Mutter) / 6 Wartime Awards: All Ironed Out / 7 Objects as Texts and Trade / 8 Trash or Treasure: How do you solve a problem like Nazi memorabilia? / 9 Collecting Nazi Memorabilia in the 21st Century and Beyond
