  • Killing Shore: The True Story of Hitler’s U-Boats

Casemate Publishers Killing Shore: The True Story of Hitler’s U-Boats

Book SynopsisIt is January 1942. Nazi Germany is about to commence an assault along the US East Coast, but this “Atlantic Pearl Harbor” would prove far more devastating than Japan’s attack on Hawaii five weeks earlier. The wolves are closing in, and few Americans realize their beaches and boardwalks will soon witness the worst naval defeat in US history. The United States is already grappling with its unpreparedness for war as the Japanese Empire annihilates US forces in the Far East and the Nazis stand triumphant over vast swaths of Europe. Britain’s survival, meanwhile, depends on cargoes delivered by civilian-manned merchant ships. America’s economic resources and latent military strength represent a light in the darkness—yet Hitler’s favorite admiral also knows this, and he has set in motion a plan of unprecedented boldness. The ensuing fiery months saw German submarines, or “U-boats,” sink hundreds of ships from Maine to Texas. This gambit, which threatened to cripple the Allies, pitted Germans against Americans in a desperate struggle that stained East Coast waters with blood and oil. Plying the seas amid this deadly game of cat-and-mouse was a motley but stalwart contingent of civilian merchant mariners carrying the fuel, food, weapons, and raw materials the Allies needed to crush the Third Reich.Several American states became battlefronts in 1942, but the events that transpired off the Jersey Shore illustrate the savagery and scope of a campaign waged across the Western Hemisphere. Even in the 21st century, shipwrecks still attest to the countless ways to die which friend and foe faced only miles from the Garden State’s most popular summer destinations. These seafarers’ lives were forfeit, but the battle they fought would decide the fate of millions.Table of ContentsPreface Sources & Methodology Part I 1. Eins Zwei Drei 2. • Rutgers University Press Intervention Narratives: Afghanistan, the United

    10 in stock

Book SynopsisIntervention Narratives examines the contradictory cultural representations of the US intervention in Afghanistan that help to justify an imperial foreign policy. These narratives involve projecting Afghans as brave anti-communist warriors who suffered the consequences of American disengagement with the region following the end of the Cold War, as victimized women who can be empowered through enterprise, as innocent dogs who need to be saved by US soldiers, and as terrorists who deserve punishment for 9/11. Given that much of public political life now involves affect rather than knowledge, feelings rather than facts, familiar recurring tropes of heroism, terrorism, entrepreneurship, and canine love make the war easier to comprehend and elicit sympathy for US military forces. An indictment of US policy, Bose demonstrates that contemporary imperialism operates on an ideologically diverse cultural terrain to enlist support for the war across the political spectrum. Trade Review"At a time when US hegemony is being challenged and redefined, narratives about Afghanistan - combining the threats of terrorism with the attractions of the region's economic resources - are being used to underscore American exceptionalism and perceptions of national identity. Bose's astute book reveals the underbelly of these 'mock narratives' for what they are: stories that the US tells about itself, both internally and externally, to substitute affective relations for political analysis in the narrative that has become 'Afghanistan.'" -- Susan Jeffords * author of Hard Bodies *"Intervention Narratives is like a bright light switched on suddenly in the mind of those uneasy about temporizing in a world of perpetual war. Instead of probing stories about empire, Bose dismantles empire’s own – the narrative “soft weapons” concocted by strategists of U.S. military operations in Afghanistan. In this beautifully factual, honest, and theoretically astute book – roving from canine rescue tales to premature withdrawal fantasies – she upends the usual meaning of posthumanism, affect, and post-truth by inserting them into the dark arenas of contemporary geopolitics." -- Timothy Brennan * author of Borrowed Light *"Campaign for the American Reader: Pg. 99: Purnima Bose's "Intervention Narratives" https://americareads.blogspot.com/2020/01/pg-99-purnima-boses-intervention.html * Campaign for the American Reader *"The Page 99 Test: Purnima Bose's "Intervention Narratives" https://page99test.blogspot.com/2020/01/purnima-boses-intervention-narratives.html * The Page 99 Test *"Intervention Narratives provides theoretical underpinning to explicate the narratives Bose analyzes, and Bose also offers a comprehensive thesis about what makes them persuasive, compulsively repeated, and ultimately harmful." * Time Now *"Bose’s book marks one of the first that actually breaks down the assumptions of the abundance of war literature that has been written about Afghanistan in the wake of 9/11. In effect, Bose takes on the knowledge–industrial complex that exists around Afghanistan, showing us, sometimes line by line, where the discursive violence lies, and how it sets the stage for actual violence." -- Helena Zeweri * Interentions: International Journal of Postcolonial Studies *Table of ContentsContentsAcronyms ixIntroduction:Intervention Narratives and Geopolitical Fetishism1 The Premature-Withdrawal NarrativeHegemonic Masculinities and the Liberal Humanist Subject2 The Capitalist-Rescue NarrativeAfghan Women and Micro-Entrepreneurship3 The Canine-Rescue Narrativeand Post-Humanist Humanitarianism4 The Retributive-Justice NarrativeOsama bin Laden as SimulacraPostscript: Three Presidents, One PolicyAcknowledgmentsNotesIndex

  • Rutgers University Press Unmanning: How Humans, Machines and Media Perform

Book SynopsisUnmanning studies the conditions that create unmanned platforms in the United States through a genealogy of experimental, pilotless planes flown between 1936 and 1992. Characteristics often attributed to the drone—including machine-like control, enmity and remoteness—are achieved by displacements between humans and machines that shape a mediated theater of war. Rather than primarily treating the drone as a result of the war on terror, this book examines contemporary targeted killing through a series of failed experiments to develop unmanned flight in the twentieth century. The human, machine and media parts of drone aircraft are organized to make an ostensibly not human framework for war that disavows its political underpinnings as technological advance. These experiments are tied to histories of global control, cybernetics, racism and colonialism. Drone crashes and failures call attention to the significance of human action in making technopolitics that comes to be opposed to “man” and the paradoxes at their basis. Trade Review"This book makes a much-needed intervention into the popular discourses that surround drone warfare today. Drawing on extensive archival research, Unmanning offers detailed histories that deconstruct the most persistent mythologies of air war in general and automated and distance weaponry in particular to offer completely new perspectives on one of the most significant technological trends in contemporary warfare." -- Caren Kaplan * author of Aerial Aftermaths: Wartime from Above *"In Unmanning, Katherine Chandler offers a compelling history of the drone that complicates and deepens our understanding of what is at stake in the performative rhetoric that fuels the automation of US military air power. This book is an invaluable resource for everyone concerned with the erasures of human agencies that enable claims for technical autonomy in contemporary warfighting." -- Lucy Suchman * author of Human-Machine Reconfigurations *"Drone theory tends to replicate the god’s eye view enjoyed by its object. Katherine Fehr Chandler bucks this trend, grounding her new theory of 'unmanned' aerial vehicles in their wayward and failure-ridden history as human–machine–media assemblages. The effacement of that history, Chandler argues, is what allowed drones to assume their current role: as sleek, agential means for disavowing both the responsibility of their wielders and the humanity of their targets. Unmanning is a timely and fascinating book." -- Paul K. Saint-Amour * author of Tense Future: Modernism, Total War, Encyclopedic Form *"As the iconographic technologies of drone warfare become history and more secretive, varied, and autonomous technologies take their place, critically examining the long history of failure that led to the unmanning of war is an urgent task that Chandler’s book meets head-on and with an accuracy and efficacy that her objects of analysis fell far short of achieving." * Cultural Studies *"While focused primarily on drone warfare, Chandler’s book – in its investigations into failure, human/machine relations, and threat production – points perhaps also to ways of thinking about how politics is denied and disavowed in other techniques of state violence like policing." * Security and Dialogue *"Unmanning makes a useful contribution by dispelling the illusion of unmanned warfare. Central to this illusion are the 'politics of disavowal.' The very term 'unmanned' is a disavowal, or an attempted negation, that separates the human, machine, and media components of drone technology. Moreover, it disconnects machine action from political accountability to create a veneer of deniability and non-attribution." * Technology and Culture *"[I]f there is a lesson to be learnt from Chandler’s brilliant book it is that the arc of the drone bends not toward justice, but failure, and contemporary experiments in drone warfare that fail do not so much crash, go haywire, or plummet into the sea. Instead, they maim, kill, and destroy, and disavow these acts as techno-mechanical progress." * Antipode Online *"Chandler’s book both invites the wider geographical deployment of this approach and reminds us that while contemporary drone development and discourse so often appear future-orientated, much can be learned from the platform’s plural histories." * Law, Culture and the Humanities *"This book makes a much-needed intervention into the popular discourses that surround drone warfare today. • Rutgers University Press Korean Comfort Women : Military Brothels,

Book SynopsisArguably the most brutal crime committed by the Japanese military during the Asia-Pacific war was the forced mobilization of 50,000 to 200,000 Asian women to military brothels to sexually serve Japanese soldiers. The majority of these women died, unable to survive the ordeal. Those survivors who came back home kept silent about their brutal experiences for about fifty years. In the late 1980s, the women’s movement in South Korea helped start the redress movement for the victims, encouraging many survivors to come forward to tell what happened to them. With these testimonies, the redress movement gained strong support from the UN, the United States, and other Western countries. Korean “Comfort Women” synthesizes the previous major findings about Japanese military sexual slavery and legal recommendations, and provides new findings about the issues “comfort women” faced for an English-language audience. It also examines the transnational redress movement, revealing that the Japanese government has tried to conceal the crime of sexual slavery and to resolve the women’s human rights issue with diplomacy and economic power.Trade Review"This book provides the most complete account yet of the historical situation of Korean 'comfort women' and of current efforts to seek redress for the survivors. Drawing upon a vast trove of first-person evidence and displaying a rigorous commitment to factual evidence, the author creates an invaluable record of past war crimes and present-day activism." — Margaret D. Stetz, author of Legacies of the Comfort Women of World War II "Korean “Comfort Women” comprehensively clarifies the role of international movements with historical accuracy and a sincere commitment to holding Japan responsible for its actions. Moreover, this book provides a detailed description of the histories and politics of the past and present as it asks readers how redress of the comfort women issue can be achieved from the perspectives of politics and justice."— MobilizationTable of ContentsAbbreviations Chronology Introduction: Background Information about Japanese Military Sexual Slavery and the Redress Movement for the Victims 1 Theoretical and Conceptual Frameworks 2 Enough Information, but the Issue Was Buried for Half a Century 3 The Emergence of the “Comfort Women” Issue and Victims’ Breaking Silence 4 General Information about the “Comfort Women” System 5 Forced Mobilization of “Comfort Women” 6 Payments of Fees and Affectionate Relationships 7 Sexual Exploitation, Violence, and Threats at “Comfort Stations” 8 The Perils of Korean “Comfort Women’s” Homecoming Trips 9 Korean “Comfort Women’s” Lives in Korea and China 10 Progress of the Redress Movement in Korea 11 Divided Responses to the Redress Movement in Japan 12 Responses to the Redress Movement in the United States Conclusion Acknowledgments Notes References Index

Book SynopsisIn May 1940, during the Battle of France, the British Expeditionary Force in France aiding the French, was cut off from the rest of the French Army by the German advance. Encircled by the Germans they retreated to the area around the port of Dunkirk. The German land forces could have easily destroyed the British Expeditionary Force, especially when many of the British troops, in their haste to withdraw, had left behind their heavy equipment. This lull in the action gave the British a few days to evacuate by sea. Winston Churchill ordered any ship or boat available, large or small, to pick up the stranded soldiers, and 338,226 men (including 123,000 French soldiers) were evacuated– the miracle of Dunkirk, as Churchill called it. It took over 900 vessels to evacuate the Allied forces. More than 40,000 vehicles as well as massive amounts of other military equipment and supplies were left behind; their value being less than that of trained fighting men. After the success of Corridor des Panzers and Zur Kuste, this new volume takes us directly into the Dunkirk arena, and concludes the suite of works on this dramatic period of history. Jean-Yves Mary has also provided modern photos of the battlefields, in comparison with the original images, allowing us to locate the areas where the events took place.Trade Reviewa highly detailed record of the daily events during the German invasion of France in 1940, and illustrated with so many photos from the period which provide an invaluable reference source for modellers and historians alike. * Military Model Scene 02/12/2015 *

Editions Heimdal Histoire SecrèTe De La 101st Airborne Division

Book SynopsisThese are stories that are not openly discussed by combat veterans and are usually only whispered between individuals at military reunions. The tales range from sad to hilarious, from surprising to horrible, but they are real. These are not the creations of a screenwriter or some novelist's pipe dreams, they are actual events, that had a lifelong impact on the soldiers who experienced them. Such a collection could only have resulted from 35 years of researcher on the 101st Airborne Division, which entailed interviews with almost 1000 veterans who wore the "screaming eagle" patch in WW2. This book is widely illustrated with photos of the time, but also places, objects, and equipment of the paratroopers of the 101st.

In June 1940, the Germans installed an important base there, engaged in the Battle of Britain (book includes never before seen photos) and in their confrontation with the invasion of Dieppe. The aerodrome suffered heavy bombardments. In June and July 1944, it became the keystone of the Battle for Caen. The Hitlerjugend put up strong resistance there against the Canadians. After the war, the aerodrome trained hundreds of pilots involved in the conflict with Algeria and became an army base before returning entirely to civil service in 2010. Editions Heimdal Les Marins FrançAis Du Jour J: Fnfl - Normandie

  • Fontenay-Rauray: Autopsie d'Une Bataille

Editions Heimdal Fontenay-Rauray: Autopsie d'Une Bataille

Book SynopsisThis book offers a meticulous study of the fighting at Fontenay-le-Pesnel and at Rauray to the west of Caen, between 25 and 29 June 1944. Both authors, Frédéric Deprun and Baptiste Flotté, wanted to give a precise account of this episode of the Battle of Normandy, starting with Operation Martlet, on the flank of Operation Epsom. Extremely detailed research concentrates on the lynchpin at Rauray and its armour confrontations. A precise chronology has been made of the destruction of the Panther tanks in front of Fontenay by the assaults by the Polar Bears and the 15th (Scottish) Infantry Division until they broke through the German defensive line held by the Panzer-Lehr-Division and the 12.SS Panzer- Division “Hitlerjugend”. By the precise localisation of unpublished photographs and an account of the operation from both sides, this three-part study pays particular attention to the relics of the fighting and the testimonies which go with each of the different acts of the battle.Text in French.

  • The Carentan Heroes

    Editions Heimdal The Carentan Heroes

    20 in stock

Book SynopsisThe liberation of Carentan is not well-known even though it wasn’t just an anecdote in the Battle of Normandy. It was in fact the object of ferocious fighting from 9 to 13 June 1944 with two elite units confronting each other: the American paratroopers from the 101st Airborne and the Fallschirmjäger of the FJR 6. General Maxwell Taylor, commanding the 101st Airborne used the whole of his division with its four airborne regiments but also all the supporting units, its four airborne artillery batteries, its medical units and its logistics to encircle the town and to chase out the German paratroopers under Major Freiherr von der Heydte; they left after fierce fighting during the night of 11-12 June only to return the next day with the 17. SS-Pz-Gren-Div. “Goetz von Berlinchingen”. The German losses as well as those of the Americans were very heavy, as were those of the civilians (the town centre still bears the signs). This book gives a detailed account of the Battle of Carentan. The accounts given by the participants in the battle enable the feats of arms to be recorded; they are always poignant, moving even. Each story is a personal epic in itself. This book modestly gathers together some of these individual adventures, throwing a profoundly human light on the complexity and the violence of the fighting for the liberation of this region in the Cotentin Peninsula. For example, Edward David Shames, one of the last heroes of Carentan still alive. Born 13 June, he thought his last hour had come on… 13 June 1944. For these reasons, Carentan holds a special place in his memories. It was also where he landed at 01h40 on D-Day. Also Don Rich who was wounded in the legs by machine gun fire in G-Company’s charge, during the attack on the town. Let’s mention also the Californian Staff Sergeant Thomas M. Rice (C/501st) who experienced a Dantesque experience in the Barquette Locks sector, his battalion’s objective. An obvious must-have for all Battle of Normandy buffs, or for readers sensitive to the human aspects of the war.

  • Sainte-MèRe-ÉGlise & Merderet

    Editions Heimdal Sainte-MèRe-ÉGlise & Merderet

Book SynopsisAfter his books about the Pointe du Hoc, WN 62 and recently Pegasus Bridge and the Melville Battery, von Keusgen gives us here a lively chronological account of the airborne attacks carried out by the legendary 82nd and 101st Airborne Divisions in the first hours of the Battle of Normandy. Not only is the text accompanied by American eye-witness accounts of the very bitter fighting around Sainte-Mère-Eglise, the flooded zones and the Merderet Bridges, but also by the accounts of Manche civilians and – von Keusgen’s principal contribution – those of German veterans, too. The reader therefore discovers all the details of what the Fallschirmjäger of the FJR 6 went through, like Bruno Hinz and K.-H. Mayer all mixed up in the fighting at Saint-Côme du Mont and the famous “Dead Man’s Corner”, or like several Grenadiere from the 91. Luftlande-Division, among whom Rudi Escher, about whom we learn more, and the telephonist Heinrich Speiles). The author moreover has had access to period documents which up until now have remained in the shadows, about Generalleutnant Wilhelm Falley and his aide de camp, Major Bartuzat, liquidated during the night of 5 to 6 June 1944. The text is accompanied by a lot of photographs. Without any doubt, this book will motivate those interested in paratroopers and the fighting in the Cotentin Peninsula.

  • Sur Les Traces De l'Armée Allemande: Grenoble Et

Editions Heimdal Sur Les Traces De l'Armée Allemande: Grenoble Et

Book SynopsisThe aim of this book is to reconstruct at least in part the image of the German troops present in the Grenoble region in 1940 at the end of the campaign for France, but above all in 1943/44 following the Italian capitulation and during the operations against the Maquis forces in the Vercors region, until the end of summer 1944. It concerns mainly the land troops (Heer), especially the Gebirgsjäger, the air force troops (Luftwaffe mainly paratroopers and bomber aviation), but also the Police (Ordnungspolizei) and incidentally the customs. Although the actions and the heinous crimes these troops committed have been known about for a long time from the accounts and pertinent studies of the Resistance which distinguished itself in the region, the reality on the other hand is not widely known, mainly because of an almost total lack of photo sources for the period. Using soldiers’ personnel documents, German and French archives and also period objects, an attempt is made to reconstruct a part of that reality, going back through the chronology of the events, following the routes taken by the units engaged, the way they were made up, their officers, the soldiers themselves and especially their losses, and where all this happened within the context of the actions carried out in the area.

Editions Heimdal U-Boote En Mediterranee Tome 2: Juin 1943 –

    15 in stock

    20 in stock

Book SynopsisEl Alamein. El Alamein was where Rommel's offensive – which seemed undefeatable – was halted on the road to Alexandria in the summer of 1942. Long weeks of battle ensued in the Egyptian desert. In this account Luftwaffe war correspondent Hans Rechenberg – present in the ranks of the brigade – immerses us in the harsh daily life of the Fallschirmjäger in El Alamein and the retreat towards Libya, with moments of anguish, deprivation, and surprise. Accompanied by numerous photographs of the unit and the battle. Originally intended for Reich propaganda, this book is without pathos, sticking to daily life in the desert. Text in French.

    20 in stock

They came from across France, from all walks of life and all military ranks, but joined together as volunteers as the French fighter group, Normandy-Niemen after France had fallen to the Nazis. This book provides a portrait of fifteen pilots and is illustrated with colour profiles of their planes, the Soviet “Yak” fighters. Becoming operational in 1943 the squadron were a formidable military unit battling alongside the Soviets on the Eastern Front. The author, former president of the Caen flying club, and an organiser of Memorial airshows, knew pilot General Risso personally. Text in French.

Diaries are an important source of the individual's experience of dictatorship, also with reference to the Nazi Volksgemeinschaft (people's community). The analysis of both diaries of young adults evacuated to the countryside during the war (Kinderlandverschickung) and members of Nazi youth organizations shows considerable discrepancies between the ideological principles of the correct presentation of Nazism and real text production. The portrayal of Peter Hofer, concentration camp doctor in Eugen Kogon's SS-Staat (The Theory and Practice of Hell), not only reveals a further perspective of the Nazi era but also the necessity of a source-critical reading, even of reports of former concentration camp prisoners. The previous deconstruction of this publication, which shaped the image of the concentration camps, is continued here, while research desiderata of the concentration camp history become clear. The changing views of former Nazis on the denazification efforts in Austria in the 1950s, between relief strategies, self-victimisation and demands, give insights in Nazi value systems in the Second Republic through the fatal integration into the Austrian victim collective.

Book SynopsisOnce the East African Campaign was concluded, some of the SAAF Fighter Squadrons, operating in Ethiopia and Sudan, moved north to Egypt to partake in the campaign in Palestine and the Desert War. 1 Squadron operated Hawker Hurricanes, while 2 Squadron operated the American built P-40 Tomahawks. 4 Squadron also transisioned to Egypt and soon joined 2 Squadron, flying the Curtiss P-40 Tomahawk. These two units were also joined by 5 Squadron, which had been formed and trained in the Union of South Africa. All three these units would eventually fly different marks of the P-40 Kittyhawk towards the end of the campaign. The ferocity of the aerial campaign over the North African desert and coastal plains can be illustrated by facts such as the numbers of fighter aircraft involved. The three SAAF Squadrons alone operated at least around 275 Tomahawks, that the author had been able to indentify. This was followed by a similar number of Kittyhawk Mk. I and Kittyhawk Mk. II aircraft. The SAAF would also operate more than 160 Kittyhawk Mk. II and Mk. IV fighters in the late stages of this campaign and the follow-up campaign in Italy. The different SAAF squadrons that eventually operated Hurricanes, also operated well in excess of 200 Hurricanes of different models during their time in North Africa. This volume covers the combat history of these fighter squadrons during the campaign, as well as the colors and markings of their aircraft. Primary sources, such as Squadron War Diaries, Pilot Logbooks, Personal Diaries, Aircraft Movement Cards, Medical and Incident Reports, Combat Reports and Supplementary reports, were used in the preparation of the text contained herein. This volume contains 88 pages, 20 full-color plates and 95 b&wphotos, indicating the people and aircraft operated by these squadrons. This volume will be followed by a third volume, tracing the onwards history of these squadrons as well as additional SAAF Fighter Squadrons during the final months of the campaign in North Africa. More volumes will follow, detailing the SAAF Fighter Squadron operations in Malta and the campaign in Sicily, Italy and the Balkans.

Such vehicles were used in the Wehrmacht, Luftwaffe and Waffen-SS, where they served as personnel carriers, tractors, combat engineering vehicles, as well as self-propelled carriage of anti-aircraft and anti-tank guns. One of them was the Sd.Kfz. 6 (Sonderkraftfahrzeug 6) Mittlerer Zugkraftwagen 5 t (middle half-track vehicle 5 tons). It was designed to be used as the main towing vehicle for the 10.5 cm le.FH 18 howitzer. Sd.Kfz. and was manufactured mainly by Büssing-NAG, with about 3,800 units being produced. The book presents a collection of photographs of different versions of the tractor from the private archives of German soldiers.
